- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37The repentance that Peter's preaching about is a change of
- 0:40mind. You might be here today and
- 0:42God's challenging you to change your thinking, change your mind.
- 0:49He's not telling you you got to be perfect.
- 0:51You got to act perfect because you can't be perfect.
- 0:53Only He's perfect. But He's saying that I will take
- 0:57your hand and show you a new way to live.
- 1:01And I was at that point ready for a new way to live, and he
- 1:05gave me new life. No matter how hard you and I
- 1:08try, we cannot live up to God's standard of perfection.
- 1:12Our hearts are stained by sin and we are unworthy of God's
- 1:16presence. But Pastor Clark reminds us that
- 1:20by the blood of Jesus, we have a new way to gain access to the
- 1:23Father's throne room. When we repent of our sins and
- 1:27commit our lives to Jesus, he calls us to a new way of living.
- 1:32While we will never live up to that perfect standard, Jesus
- 1:35lifts our heads. It reminds us that in him we are
- 1:39made righteous and holy. Now here's Pastor Clark in Acts
- 1:43Chapter 5 with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:47So here we are today, where we're viewed by people in the
- 1:55House and the Congress and in the White House as troublemakers
- 2:05that need to be silenced. Where are you and me in regard
- 2:10to sharing our faith? I met with the evangelist at the
- 2:15campus of Penn State College last week.
- 2:19He's been a friend of mine for years, and he stands in front of
- 2:22the science building. All these bright young brains
- 2:25coming out of Penn State to go into incredible careers and he
- 2:30would just talk and preach and share and give positions on what
- 2:37is truth and students would engage with him.
- 2:41Some would argue, some would listen, some would end up
- 2:43believing and become Christians. Well, Gary told me now, he said,
- 2:48Clark, it's so bad up here that anybody that's a student that
- 2:52hears this will be really apprehensive about engaging me
- 2:56in any kind of dialogue. Because they said what'll happen
- 3:00is, is that the students will get blackballed on Facebook or
- 3:04social media and they'll be held out as being like right wing
- 3:08crazy people because they are interested in the gospel of
- 3:13Christ. And they're concerned that
- 3:15that'll be set up somehow in their resumes and they won't be
- 3:18able to get jobs. And so they're like running
- 3:22silent. Fortunately, he's he's allowed
- 3:27to continually do that. Quite a wealthy man many years
- 3:30ago made an endowment to the college that this would be the
- 3:33deal, that there would be a preacher in front of the science
- 3:36building until Jesus came being funded by some very wealthy
- 3:41person. So they can't throw Gary off
- 3:43campus. They just got to put up with
- 3:44him, which is. Which is pretty cool, you know?
- 3:48Yeah, So you have the situation, though, that in Jerusalem at the
- 3:54time, I mean, it was definitely bad and and I would say worse
- 3:58than what maybe we think we're experiencing right now.
- 4:01The captain went with the officers and brought them
- 4:04without violence. They feared the people would
- 4:06unless they should be stoned. And when they brought them, they
- 4:09set them before the council. And the high priest asked them
- 4:11saying, did not we strictly command you not to teach in his
- 4:15name? Like what?
- 4:17What's up with you guys? We told you you can't do this.
- 4:20And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine and
- 4:24intended to bring this man's blood on us.
- 4:26So what? What's amazing is there was such
- 4:29a a power in the early church that the whole city was aware of
- 4:34the gospel. Unfortunately, the whole city of
- 4:37Greensburg, I'm sure, is not aware of the Gospel, nor the
- 4:41state of Pennsylvania, nor the United States of America, let
- 4:44alone the rest of the world. Why?
- 4:46Because we as Christians have been, I think, apathetic or
- 4:50complacent in regard to sharing our faith when we have
- 4:55opportunities to share it. I'm not talking about pushing
- 4:58people with this stuff. There was a time when people
- 5:01tell me about this before I believed I didn't want to hear
- 5:03them. So I don't want to, I don't want
- 5:05to hear about this stuff. So people would, you know,
- 5:08respect me and my opinion and maybe pray for me, but they
- 5:12wouldn't bug me about this stuff all the time.
- 5:16But there has to be this opportunity to have conversation
- 5:20with people that have views that are different than yours and
- 5:24mine, not out of judgment, but out of love.
- 5:27You want lost people to know that there's a God who loves
- 5:32them and cares about them no matter what they've done.
- 5:36He's a forgiving, merciful God that has to be in our hearts as
- 5:42Christians, front and center. And the positions of that come
- 5:48up, you know, nowadays in regard to human sexuality or, you know,
- 5:54issues of when life is truly in the womb and positions of morals
- 6:02and creation and all these things that are obviously very
- 6:09viable truths that need to be communicated right to people
- 6:13that don't know the other side. I mean, I think it's good to
- 6:16have a, a, a conversation with someone who's an evolutionist,
- 6:20you know, ridicule them and make fun of them and call them
- 6:23stupid, whatever you want to find out why they think the way
- 6:26they think and what causes them to have the position they have.
- 6:30And then share some information that you have regarding Genesis
- 6:34and what the Bible teaches about how mankind came into existence
- 6:41in regard to the issue of jobs right now and all the people
- 6:47that or complaining, there's no one that's out there that wants
- 6:50to work well. No one ever asks the question,
- 6:54why is there less people physically able to work?
- 6:59Well, when you think about the number of lives that have been
- 7:01taken over the last 30 years, if they weren't taken, there'd be a
- 7:05lot of people that would be here that could work or do whatever.
- 7:11They're not here. They weren't given a chance.
- 7:12They were taken out before they were born.
- 7:17So these kind of situations are things that have to be
- 7:21communicated. And so are we afraid?
- 7:24Are we different than these people here?
- 7:27Because, well, what if they don't like me anymore?
- 7:29What if they hate me? Or what if they reject me?
- 7:32Or what if they you know, what if what if I got fired from my
- 7:35job because I I have a position of Christian principles.
- 7:41That's something you have to look down deep inside and know
- 7:45that God does expect us to speak out about truth.
- 7:52Let the redeemed of the Lord say so whom he's delivered out of
- 7:56the hands of the enemy. So these guys are being accused
- 8:01of filling the city with the doctrine of the gospel of Jesus
- 8:05with that's that's a good thing, right?
- 8:07And then these guys are complaining, well, you're
- 8:09bringing this man's blood on us. They forget that months ago when
- 8:15they were standing and Pilot was there saying this man is
- 8:18innocent. I refuse to be held culpable for
- 8:21his demise. He's washing his hands as a
- 8:24symbol that he's not guilty. Pilot's saying, you know, I'm
- 8:28not going to be guilty of this man's blood on my hands.
- 8:31And they yelled, yelled out, well, let his blood be on our
- 8:34hands. The masses cried out.
- 8:37So it's already true that the man's blood of the crucifixion
- 8:41of Christ is on everyone who's rejected Christ and who's lived
- 8:46willful, sinful lives to realize they're responsible for the
- 8:50crucifixion. So Peter and the other apostles
- 8:54answered and said we ought to obey God rather than men.
- 8:58Now the Bible tells us that we have authorities in office to
- 9:05keep the Commonwealth safe from the governing officials to the
- 9:12police departments, all these kind of things.
- 9:14We're told to respect these people that have rollover us.
- 9:20That's in the Bible. But there comes a time where you
- 9:24may have to decide that there's certain things you're being told
- 9:28you can or cannot do that are against your constitutional
- 9:33rights and your Christian liberties.
- 9:35Where you can say, well, I respect your opinion, but I have
- 9:38to obey God rather than man to stand up for what the truth is.
- 9:47And this is what Peter said. Now, this guy was a guy that was
- 9:51a wimp, freaking out whenever they asked him.
- 9:54Before Jesus was crucified, you were with him, weren't you one
- 9:57of his followers? No, I never knew him.
- 9:59I never saw him. He's cursing.
- 10:00You know, he's he's he's doing all he can to get out of the
- 10:03issue of being connected with Jesus.
- 10:05How different it is now that he's still with the power of the
- 10:08Holy Spirit and he's able to boldly say we ought to obey God
- 10:14rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up
- 10:18Jesus, whom you murdered by hanging on a tree.
- 10:22Him God has exalted to his right hand to be Prince and savior.
- 10:28That word Prince is translated as pioneer.
- 10:33He was the first and only one that could die and come to life
- 10:40again through resurrection. And because of what he's done,
- 10:44we're all followers of him. We're also going to be
- 10:49resurrected on that final day. We have life everlasting because
- 10:53of what Christ has done for us. And then he continues preaching.
- 10:58He says him, God has exalted to his right hand to be Prince and
- 11:03Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.
- 11:07That's a good news thing, right? It's like repentance is turning
- 11:12direction. Like I know my own life, you
- 11:15know, and you know your life. There came a point in life where
- 11:18I was hell bound. I was going on, I was on that
- 11:21highway to hell, you know, and, and I didn't care.
- 11:24And I that's the way I was. And this is how I rolled.
- 11:27And this is what my life was like.
- 11:29And then by the grace of God, through the prayers of a godly
- 11:32mother and other people, praying for a son that was wayward and
- 11:36lost and clueless and proud and arrogant and self-centered, that
- 11:43my heart would be softened and I would be slightly interested in
- 11:49this message of forgiveness in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 11:54So at 20 years old, I began to think there has to be more to
- 11:58life than what I'm living and how I'm living.
- 12:01And I wasn't happy anymore. I wasn't peaceful, I wasn't
- 12:05satisfied. I, I didn't have any peace in my
- 12:08life, had no joy. And then I'm confronted with
- 12:11this message of the gospel and it began to really get to me and
- 12:17it began to make me realize I needed to change my evil ways.
- 12:23Remember that song by Santana? You've got to change your evil
- 12:26ways. That was a big song back then
- 12:29when I and I was, I was enjoying my evil ways.
- 12:33Well, all of a sudden I wasn't having fun in evil ways anymore
- 12:38and I knew I needed to change. But how do I change?
- 12:43I can't change myself. And then the Lord began to teach
- 12:48me that. I'll change you, Clark.
- 12:50I'll make you new. I'll give you a new heart, a new
- 12:53way of looking at things, a new mind.
- 12:55I'll give you my Bible, the Word.
- 12:57Or you can learn and understand what it means to be a follower
- 13:00of me. That I'm still learning today
- 13:03how to follow Him deeper and closer.
- 13:08It doesn't end just when you become a believer.
- 13:11The first day, it's a constant every day changing my mind about
- 13:16the way I am and things that God wants to do different in my
- 13:20heart or help me to see things in a deeper perspective.
- 13:24The repentance that Peter's preaching about is a change of
- 13:28mind. You might be here today and
- 13:30God's challenging you to change your thinking, change your mind.
- 13:37He's not telling you you've got to be perfect.
- 13:38You've got to act perfect because you can't be perfect.
- 13:41Only He's perfect. But He's saying that I will take
- 13:44your hand and show you a new way to live.
- 13:48And I was at that point ready for a new way to live.
- 13:52And He gave me new life. He said if anyone is in Christ
- 13:56as a new creation, old things pass away.
- 14:00Behold, all things become new. And he said, and we are his
- 14:06witnesses. Peter said, we are the
- 14:07witnesses. That's what we are in this
- 14:09church as Christians, as people, as brothers and sisters.
- 14:13You know, you go to places, you know people I, I don't know and
- 14:16vice versa. You have an opportunity to
- 14:19spread this gospel, this witness to give people an opportunity to
- 14:23understand what the Lord has done for you and what he can do
- 14:27for them. We are witnesses to these
- 14:31things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to
- 14:35those who obey him. I'm so excited studying a book
- 14:39of the Acts right now personally, because I know it's
- 14:41energizing my life as a pastor and the other leaders in the
- 14:45church. But I'm sure it's energizing you
- 14:47too, to share the Lord. And I get more texts and phone
- 14:52calls now than I have in a long time.
- 14:54Pray for this person. I'm sharing the Lord with them.
- 14:56Pray for that person that doesn't know Jesus or, you know,
- 14:59this person's closed or this person became a believer,
- 15:02whatever. I mean, it's, it's exciting
- 15:04because the witness is what gets the gospel out.
- 15:09And so the culture, as I said, can change based upon us talking
- 15:13more about the good news, right? Talking about the good news,
- 15:16telling people the good news. So there's this guy Gamaliel
- 15:20here, and we're gonna read this and then we'll finish up in this
- 15:23section. Gamaliel was a a leader in the
- 15:27Jewish sect of the Pharisees, a very bright guy.
- 15:32The Apostle Paul, before he got saved, sat at the feet of
- 15:35Gamaliel. He was a very, very bright guy.
- 15:38As a matter of fact, when he died, he was such a strict Jew
- 15:41that they said when he died, the Jewish people weren't that on
- 15:44fire about their faith anymore and they began to become laxed
- 15:48in their following of the law and all that kind of stuff.
- 15:50But anyway, he's going to give some advice here.
- 15:54When they heard what Peter said this, they were furious and
- 15:59plotted to kill them. I mean, this is the first time
- 16:01in accident. They're just not mad and put him
- 16:03in prison. We're gonna kill these guys and
- 16:05get rid of him. Then one in the council stood
- 16:09up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, held in
- 16:12respect by all the people. He was respected by everyone and
- 16:17commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little
- 16:20while. Calm down, guys, Quiet down.
- 16:23Put these guys out. I want to give you some other
- 16:25perspective here. And he said that the men of
- 16:27Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding
- 16:31these men. Think about it.
- 16:33He's speaking some sanity to him.
- 16:35For some time ago, Thaddeus rose up claiming to be somebody.
- 16:40This was a cult leader. A number of men, about 400,
- 16:43joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed
- 16:46him were scattered and came to nothing.
- 16:48So in other words, this, this leader, at this time, this guy
- 16:52Thaddeus, wasn't really effective when he died.
- 16:55His movement, his, his plan, whatever it was, ended up coming
- 16:59to nothing. Verse 37 After this man, there's
- 17:03another guy they mentioned in their history.
- 17:05Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census and drew away
- 17:10many people after him. He also perished, and all who
- 17:14obeyed him were dispersed. And now I say to you, keep away
- 17:20from these men and let them alone.
- 17:22For if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing.
- 17:28But if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it, lest you even be
- 17:33found to fight against God. Isn't that fascinating?
- 17:37Over 2000 years ago, this thing has not ended being nothing, has
- 17:44it? We're all here today, recipients
- 17:47of the power of the gospel. Every one of these men, these
- 17:52apostles except for one, the apostle John, were martyred,
- 17:56Very serious ways of dying, being speared to death, being
- 18:00hung, being put upside down on a cross, on and on and on.
- 18:04Horrific deaths every apostle had except for John, They tried
- 18:07to destroy him in boiling water, didn't work.
- 18:10And he ended up this time of old age after down the road, after
- 18:14he wrote the Book of Revelation. So he speaks truth to these guys
- 18:20to think about what they're doing, and they agreed with him.
- 18:25And this Gamaliel isn't even a Christian and he's not really
- 18:29fascinated or interested in, even though he knows about the
- 18:32miracles that have occurred. You know, there's a lot of
- 18:35people that that believe historically that Jesus is real,
- 18:39that he died, that he rose again, that he did miracles, but
- 18:43they still don't believe. That's ironic.
- 18:47It's just the pride in the heart that keeps us from humbling
- 18:52ourselves and surrendering our lives to the will of God.
- 18:56I fought that for years. I, I didn't, I turned my back on
- 19:00this stuff. I'm so thankful that God and His
- 19:04grace turned my life around so that I could commit my life to
- 19:09following Jesus and wanting to be a witness, wanting to be a
- 19:14better witness. So they agreed with him.
- 19:19And when they had called the apostles and beaten them, they
- 19:22commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus and
- 19:25they let them go. This wasn't a calm beating.
- 19:28It was 39 lashes so bad that it ripped their skin apart.
- 19:33People died from a blood hemorrhage from these kind of
- 19:37beatings. So it wasn't a light discipline,
- 19:43but they told them you guys should not speak in the name of
- 19:48Jesus and let them go. It's interesting how it's
- 19:52translated here. You should not speak in a
- 19:54they're not saying you, you will not speak in the name of Jesus.
- 19:58They're trying to like convince them because of the beating and
- 20:01all this other stuff, you, you know, you really shouldn't be
- 20:03doing this anymore. You're just creating more
- 20:05problems for yourselves and pain and suffering.
- 20:09So they departed from the presence of the Council,
- 20:12rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his
- 20:17name, Remarkable men that they were actually proud that they
- 20:27went through this beating and the suffering and they were
- 20:30associated with Jesus Christ. And I pray that would be the
- 20:35case for us. Whenever we get pushed back or
- 20:38people don't like us anymore, they, you know, condemn us or
- 20:42accuse us or slander us or whatever about whatever in life
- 20:46that we don't really focus on what people say or think.
- 20:50We're just glad that we're affiliated with the Holy
- 20:55Trinity, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, that we are
- 20:58representatives of the Creator God, and that we have the
- 21:02privilege to live for Him and speak on behalf of Him and share
- 21:09the Gospel with whoever will listen.
- 21:13They were, they counted it worthy to suffer shame for His
- 21:17name. Whenever you feel embarrassed or
- 21:22shame because you're a follower of Jesus, read this chapter
- 21:27again and be encouraged that you don't have to hold your head
- 21:32down in shame. You can hold your head up high
- 21:35knowing that one day, whenever you stand before the Lord and
- 21:41give an account of how you lived your life, the things that'll
- 21:46matter at that time is what you did for Jesus.
- 21:50How you spoke up for Him, how you lived for Him, how you cared
- 21:55for people. You're not responsible for the
- 21:58results of who believes or who doesn't believe.
- 22:00We can't make anybody believe that God uses your life and mine
- 22:05to be a bridge between lost people in the Kingdom of God.
- 22:11Then it finishes in verse 42. It says in daily, in the temple
- 22:15and in every house. They did not cease teaching and
- 22:19preaching Jesus as the Christ. Isn't that a wonderful way of
- 22:23ending this chapter daily in the temple and in every house.
- 22:30They did not cease. In other words, the directions
- 22:34they were given by the governing authorities to not speak in the
- 22:36name of Jesus was not followed. They did not stop teaching and
- 22:42preaching Jesus as the Christ and I believe that's what we're
- 22:47to do. We, you know, we don't stop
- 22:48teaching or preaching the gospel because of what people say or
- 22:56what they threaten us with. We just keep on doing what we're
- 23:00called to do, right? To be witnesses of the Lord.
- 23:06I pray this week He would give you opportunity to love on
- 23:10people, love on your neighbors, love on your enemy, love on your
- 23:13family, your friends, and share humbly the good news with
- 23:19someone. Ask the Lord to give you one
- 23:23person this week just to say something about God, what He's
- 23:28done for you, how He's blessed you, how He's loved you, how
- 23:35He's forgiven you, and that He wants to do that with every
- 23:41human being, doesn't he? He wants to do that for every
- 23:45human being. And the only way they'll know is
- 23:49by us telling them, May God give you strength and me strength to
- 23:54do that. We're so glad you joined us
- 23:58today on this edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 24:01Pastor Clark is teaching through the Book of Acts, which is the
- 24:04only book that chronicles the history of the early church
- 24:08immediately after Jesus's ascension.
- 24:11It gives us a front row seat to how the Gospel began to move
- 24:14outwards, starting in Jerusalem and reaching into the heart of
- 24:18the Roman Empire. In just three decades, a small
- 24:22group of frightened ordinary believers became a bold, spirit
- 24:26empowered movement that transformed the known world.
- 24:30Acts is not just a history lesson.
- 24:32It's a reminder of what God can do when His people are
- 24:35surrendered, obedient and filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 24:40Their perseverance still inspires us today.
- 24:43May we follow their example and live faithfully for Christ in
- 24:47our own time. We hope today's message
- 24:50encouraged you. Living Waters of Grace is a
