- 0:03Speaker 1: Hey, look who we have, you know, Sarrus joining us
- 0:05Speaker 1: right now from the Athletic and also Rates and Barrels.
- 0:08Speaker 1: You can hear Trevor on there weekly too, you know.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Great to see you.
- 0:11Speaker 1: And I saw the fresh article out from the Athletic.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Four numbers from MLB's first week of the season that matter,
- 0:18Speaker 1: So I want to start there and then we'll see
- 0:20Speaker 1: that Trevor. May you know cyrus chemistry that we get
- 0:23Speaker 1: every week. But let's start your first in that article.
- 0:27Speaker 1: If I was sitting with you and I was like,
- 0:28Speaker 1: you got one minute, what do you think is the
- 0:30Speaker 1: top trend that you picked out?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Well, I think actually the two things that are really
- 0:35Speaker 2: important early in the season are bat speed and stuff plus.
- 0:40Speaker 2: And I think that this season we're actually seeing a
- 0:42Speaker 2: little bit of trend. I didn't really cover this in
- 0:44Speaker 2: the article, but we're actually seeing a little bit of
- 0:46Speaker 2: a trend in both of those, which is that with
- 0:51Speaker 2: the strikes all, with the abs kind of shrinking the
- 0:53Speaker 2: strikes all a little bit. It's good to be a
- 0:56Speaker 2: high stuff pitcher. You know. The more that you can
- 0:59Speaker 2: just throw nasty stuff into the zone, the better off
- 1:02Speaker 2: you're gonna be. It's gonna be hard to sort of
- 1:04Speaker 2: pick the corners in this abs time, I think. And
- 1:09Speaker 2: the other one is that we're seeing you know, so
- 1:13Speaker 2: you know this the stuff plus surgers here, these are
- 1:15Speaker 2: the guys who are going to do well with it.
- 1:16Speaker 2: And Tod Bradley's the type of guy I'm talking about,
- 1:19Speaker 2: you know, Todd Bradley is his stuff is up, and
- 1:23Speaker 2: he's never been a guy with good command, but he's
- 1:26Speaker 2: throwing this stuff to the middle of the zone and
- 1:29Speaker 2: trusting it. It's he's up in Velo. So he's ninety
- 1:31Speaker 2: seven miles an hour now and he's thriving because of it.
- 1:36Speaker 2: So Bradley was a big a guy who went up.
- 1:40Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Jack Khanowitz is captures another trend, which is changing your
- 1:45Speaker 2: arm angle to get more out of your stuff. One
- 1:48Speaker 2: of the things we found out of stuff research was
- 1:51Speaker 2: that your arm angle, your release point, is hugely important.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Batter see your release point, your arm angle, and they
- 1:58Speaker 2: expect certain types of movement. If you can upset that expectation,
- 2:02Speaker 2: you can do well. Kohanowitz used to have a little
- 2:05Speaker 2: bit of a lower arm slot and throw a sinker
- 2:07Speaker 2: and everyone said, oh, I see the armslot. I think
- 2:10Speaker 2: sinker he throws sinker, everything's normal. He's raised his arm
- 2:14Speaker 2: slot and made that sinker more deceptive, and we're seeing
- 2:18Speaker 2: the best strikeout rate out of Kuwanowitz's career. Now, he
- 2:21Speaker 2: hasn't turned it into on field success completely yet, but
- 2:25Speaker 2: I am more upbeat about this version of Kohanowitz than
- 2:29Speaker 2: I have in the past. The other one that's big
- 2:32Speaker 2: is bat speed. And bat speed can tell you as
- 2:34Speaker 2: much as barrel rate. It's one of the most barrel
- 2:37Speaker 2: it is one of the most predictive stats in terms
- 2:39Speaker 2: of rest of season power. And bat speed can tell
- 2:41Speaker 2: you as much as barrel rate in as much as
- 2:44Speaker 2: ten swings, and it has a tremendous predictive power. What
- 2:50Speaker 2: we're seeing, though, is a little bit like what we're
- 2:52Speaker 2: seeing on the velocity side, which is the bottom bat speed.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Guys are raising up, and I think we're going to
- 2:58Speaker 2: see a lot few. You were sixty six, sixty seven,
- 3:02Speaker 2: sixty eight mile an hour bat speeds than we did
- 3:04Speaker 2: in the past. Guys like Luke Kishel, he was sixty
- 3:07Speaker 2: seven percent last year. He's coming back at sixty nine
- 3:10Speaker 2: miles per hour, seventy miles an hour. You have Matt
- 3:13Speaker 2: McClain who had the shoulder surgery. He was at seventy
- 3:16Speaker 2: miles an hour. He's up to seventy two. So I
- 3:19Speaker 2: think that we're seeing the floor come up, because it's
- 3:23Speaker 2: really hard to homer on a pitch if you don't
- 3:26Speaker 2: swing at least seventy two seventy three miles an hour.
- 3:29Speaker 2: And you know most of the baseball is about homery now,
- 3:33Speaker 2: I mean to be honest, it's the best thing a
- 3:35Speaker 2: hitter can do. So I think we're seeing the bottom
- 3:38Speaker 2: come up. We're also seeing at the top more guys
- 3:41Speaker 2: swinging at eighty. It used to be Stanton was the
- 3:43Speaker 2: only guy swinging the bat eighty miles an hour. Now
- 3:46Speaker 2: Junior Camignaro's up there, Nick Kurtz is up there, Jack
- 3:49Speaker 2: Kaglianoon is up there. A bunch of guys swinging nearly
- 3:52Speaker 2: eighty miles an hour. So I think, now that we're
- 3:55Speaker 2: measuring bat speed, we're going to see an increase in
- 3:57Speaker 2: bat speed, the same way that when we started measuring
- 4:00Speaker 2: velocity pitch velocity, we saw an increase in pitch velocity
- 4:03Speaker 2: over time.
- 4:05Speaker 4: You know, you mentioned about stuff plus being a big
- 4:11Speaker 4: indicator and the guys improving. I noticed a thing on
- 4:13Speaker 4: TAJ also, and that's going to be great to get
- 4:17Speaker 4: into and raids and barrels. But what I want to
- 4:19Speaker 4: do is actually maybe introduce to people at home to
- 4:22Speaker 4: another stat that I think is being used a lot
- 4:25Speaker 4: more at csw percent, So I want your opinion on it.
- 4:29Speaker 4: That's called strikes plus fifth percent. So it's just like
- 4:32Speaker 4: total strikes, how much are you in the zone and
- 4:35Speaker 4: then also getting whiffs? How important? How does that correlate
- 4:38Speaker 4: with stuff plus like those higher numbers the ability to
- 4:42Speaker 4: get swings and misses or get strikes in the zone.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Just throwing a lot of a lot of strikes in
- 4:46Speaker 4: the box and also getting lots of swings of misses.
- 4:48Speaker 4: How does that correlate to guys with higher stuff.
- 4:51Speaker 2: No, it's a complicated relationship there because obviously being in
- 4:54Speaker 2: the zone is command and stuff, right, Like you can
- 4:56Speaker 2: have the confidence to throw stuff into the zone, or
- 4:59Speaker 2: you can be you can have that pinpoint command. So
- 5:01Speaker 2: that's that's a complicating factor. What I would say is
- 5:04Speaker 2: that called strikes swift is a really good stat because
- 5:08Speaker 2: it gets to are you getting strikes. One of the
- 5:11Speaker 2: other most popular predictive stats is strikeouts minus walks. So
- 5:15Speaker 2: with csw you're getting it. Are you getting the strikes?
- 5:17Speaker 2: You're focusing on getting strikes, and it's really powerful. One
- 5:21Speaker 2: thing that is interesting is that in the early going,
- 5:23Speaker 2: in you know, the first few games of a season,
- 5:25Speaker 2: in a smaller sample called strikes, are you know, less
- 5:31Speaker 2: predictive than swinging strikes. And so you're putting the two together,
- 5:35Speaker 2: and that's fine. It's it's still a really powerful thing.
- 5:38Speaker 2: But early season calt strikes depends on the umpire to
- 5:42Speaker 2: some extent, so there's noise there from the umpire. Swinging
- 5:46Speaker 2: strikes is a little bit more. That's stuff, right, So
- 5:51Speaker 2: calt strikes is going to take a cult strikes a
- 5:53Speaker 2: little bit more command, and swing strikes a little bit
- 5:55Speaker 2: more stuff. Putting them together gives you a little bit
- 5:57Speaker 2: of command and stuff. That's great. But early season and
- 6:00Speaker 2: swing strikes are more predictive because that's just the pitcher
- 6:03Speaker 2: versus the batter. The batter swung and he missed.
- 6:07Speaker 1: With over thirty five million downloads, what is the number
- 6:11Speaker 1: one ratted ticketing app?
- 6:12Speaker 4: Todd Father, it's simple Man seek geek.
- 6:14Speaker 5: As we know, man. They have a lot of things
- 6:17Speaker 5: that helps you out along the way. They have green
- 6:19Speaker 5: dots meaning good and red dots meaning bad. And it's
- 6:22Speaker 5: on a scale of one to ten, showing you, Scott,
- 6:24Speaker 5: how good the seats are. And sometimes you want to
- 6:27Speaker 5: sit in the nosebleed theer's sometimes you want to sit
- 6:28Speaker 5: in really good seats and Scott, you know the code, right, yeah,
- 6:31Speaker 5: I do.
- 6:31Speaker 1: And also I know that you always like a good deal.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Oh so seekk helps you out all the time with that.
- 6:36Speaker 1: They also help you out with the exclusive FT code,
- 6:40Speaker 1: which is Territory ten for ten percent off your next
- 6:42Speaker 1: set of tickets at sea Geek. That's ten percent off
- 6:46Speaker 1: any tickets with promo code t er r it r
- 6:49Speaker 1: Y one zero. Make sure you click the link in
- 6:52Speaker 1: the description to download the app and you can have
- 6:54Speaker 1: that code automatically added to your account so that you
- 6:56Speaker 1: can use it later. There are regular season MLB games
- 6:59Speaker 1: going on right now. There are hot tickets across the country,
- 7:03Speaker 1: so it make sure you go to seat Geek. They
- 7:05Speaker 1: will take care of you.
- 7:07Speaker 2: All right.
- 7:08Speaker 3: We're at the beginning of the year and this is
- 7:10Speaker 3: pretty new stuff stuff. Plus even casual fans might not
- 7:14Speaker 3: have heard about it before, like a year or two ago.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Of the data that you found in the first ten
- 7:20Speaker 3: games month of the season. How many people have spikes
- 7:24Speaker 3: of stuff plus early on because people rarely, I mean
- 7:28Speaker 3: normally people just be like, oh's velocity's up or oh no,
- 7:32Speaker 3: his velocities down. This is bad. Like that's the like,
- 7:35Speaker 3: really minute, junior, look at everything, and now is stuff
- 7:39Speaker 3: plus compared to other years? Do we have spikes in
- 7:43Speaker 3: the first month that then that stuff plus goes down
- 7:47Speaker 3: for whatever reason?
- 7:50Speaker 2: Well know, you have guys who just have a better
- 7:53Speaker 2: VIEWO at the beginning of season, maybe peter out. You know,
- 7:55Speaker 2: guys who used to be relievers, that'll that'll be something.
- 7:59Speaker 2: But generally stuff plus the reason that it's so effective
- 8:03Speaker 2: in being predictive is that it stabilizes really quickly. Whatever
- 8:08Speaker 2: your stuff is early on, that's generally what you have
- 8:11Speaker 2: the rest of the season. What I like about it,
- 8:13Speaker 2: in case anybody listening doesn't know that much about it,
- 8:17Speaker 2: is that it's not just VILO. So Todds Bradley is
- 8:20Speaker 2: a stuff plus surger. He did it with some the
- 8:22Speaker 2: low ninety seven miles an hour, but his splitter also
- 8:25Speaker 2: has a different shape, and so you know that splitter
- 8:28Speaker 2: is upsetting hitter expectations. Another stuffless surger Will Warren a
- 8:33Speaker 2: little bit of v low. But really what he did
- 8:35Speaker 2: was he changed where he is on the mound, and
- 8:39Speaker 2: you know that might not You're like, why does that
- 8:40Speaker 2: change of stuff? Well, it changes release point and it
- 8:43Speaker 2: changes the way his pitches look, and especially to left
- 8:46Speaker 2: handed hitters. So Will Warren's spot on the mound has
- 8:49Speaker 2: made his four seamer and his and his curveball play up,
- 8:52Speaker 2: and his change up play up. So you know, he's
- 8:55Speaker 2: a better pitcher now because of it. You have somebody
- 8:58Speaker 2: like Jansen Junk who not only he upped his v loo,
- 9:01Speaker 2: you know, but also change shapes. He has three inches
- 9:04Speaker 2: more ride on his fastball and he's kind of a
- 9:07Speaker 2: lower slot guy, so that's going to be really effective
- 9:09Speaker 2: to add that movement. So what I like about stuff
- 9:12Speaker 2: plus is it adds movement and velo and generally speaking,
- 9:17Speaker 2: I could I bet you Trevor can speak to this. Yes,
- 9:20Speaker 2: your your shapes and your velo go up and down
- 9:22Speaker 2: a little bit, but generally speaking, if you can shape
- 9:25Speaker 2: a ball to do a certain thing, you pretty much
- 9:28Speaker 2: do that the rest of the season. Am I getting
- 9:30Speaker 2: it right? Yeah?
- 9:33Speaker 4: About right? I mean yeah, yeah, once you figure it out,
- 9:37Speaker 4: usually it's kind of hard to lose it in any
- 9:40Speaker 4: meaningfully way that's gonna hurt your stuff. Plush clicking. It's
- 9:43Speaker 4: funny something clicking is once you get it, it's actually
- 9:47Speaker 4: harder to lose it than actually find it. So uh
- 9:50Speaker 4: that that is a that is a a common thing.
- 9:52Speaker 4: And I that's why I love looking at suppluts or
- 9:55Speaker 4: at least it's a great indicator to point you in
- 9:57Speaker 4: a direction. Uh to say, like you said earlier, when
- 10:01Speaker 4: you find something that's interesting with for wil Warren, moving
- 10:06Speaker 4: on the on the mound, you find that because you
- 10:08Speaker 4: see a increase in stuff plus you're like, okay, so
- 10:10Speaker 4: where's this coming from? And then you get to find
- 10:12Speaker 4: those interesting major changes that you probably wouldn't have found
- 10:16Speaker 4: any other way because who's looking at where they are
- 10:18Speaker 4: on the rubber? Like, no one just looks at that
- 10:20Speaker 4: by itself. So it's it's that's what I love it for.
- 10:23Speaker 4: I think that's what what SAT's like. Stuff plus are
- 10:26Speaker 4: great at is is finding these major adjustments that guys
- 10:29Speaker 4: are making before they tell a you know, a reporter
- 10:32Speaker 4: or something. After a game.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Yeah, Joe, Joe, Ryan's got a new curveball and Kyle
- 10:38Speaker 2: Harrison's got a new kick change. I mean those things
- 10:40Speaker 2: they will tell a reporter and you can see them
- 10:42Speaker 2: pretty quickly, but they those are all big stuff plus
- 10:45Speaker 2: surgers as well.
- 10:46Speaker 3: I actually have a question for both Ino and Trevor
- 10:49Speaker 3: because you might have a different opinion on this question.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Stuff plus wise regardless of velocity, because everybody says with
- 10:58Speaker 3: every you know, mile per hour or whatever, adding average
- 11:00Speaker 3: and sloting go down regardless of velocity. What is the
- 11:04Speaker 3: one superpower the best stuff plus increase that you could have.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Is it vert is it sink? Is it the splitter?
- 11:15Speaker 3: Is it the is it the rotational the splitter, whether
- 11:18Speaker 3: it's rokies. If you could increase something, what would be
- 11:21Speaker 3: the greatest superpower you could increase that would show up
- 11:24Speaker 3: in stuff plus.
- 11:27Speaker 2: I'll say vertical movement. And then I just want to
- 11:30Speaker 2: add in that arm angle expectation. So you know, some
- 11:33Speaker 2: guy it's not raw. So like some guy who's like
- 11:36Speaker 2: at a lower arm slot, he might only be throwing fourteen.
- 11:40Speaker 2: So you hear vertical break or something, right, you hear
- 11:43Speaker 2: fourteen IVB And that's not a great number by itself.
- 11:46Speaker 2: You'd be like, oh, that's not good. But if he's
- 11:49Speaker 2: like a side armor and he's throwing a fourteen IVB.
- 11:51Speaker 2: That's great. So I would just say vertical movement above expectation.
- 11:55Speaker 2: So if you can drop, you could throw something that
- 11:59Speaker 2: jumps above what people expect giving your arm angle, or
- 12:01Speaker 2: you can throw something that drops more than people expect.
- 12:05Speaker 2: That's the death ball or the you know, a big
- 12:09Speaker 2: like a really high spin curveball that just drops off
- 12:11Speaker 2: the table, or you have a four seamer that just
- 12:13Speaker 2: pops a little bit off of your arm angle. Those
- 12:16Speaker 2: are the two ways, those two best ways to get
- 12:18Speaker 2: whiffs I think with your stuff.
- 12:20Speaker 4: I was smiling a little bit when you ask the
- 12:22Speaker 4: question because Ino has told me this many many times
- 12:25Speaker 4: that one of the biggest ways to increase your velocity
- 12:27Speaker 4: is throw it harder or sorry, increase your stuff flus
- 12:30Speaker 4: throw it harder. But if we take that out, yes,
- 12:36Speaker 4: like if you really think about it, just to put
- 12:38Speaker 4: it simply, every you can you can take a stat
- 12:42Speaker 4: like an arm angle, and then you can find, based
- 12:45Speaker 4: on other guys within a range within that arm angle,
- 12:47Speaker 4: what the normal movement on a pitch type is, and
- 12:50Speaker 4: then that's arranged too. And then outside of that one
- 12:53Speaker 4: way or the other is makes it look more different
- 12:56Speaker 4: than others, so like that subverts expectations. Josh Hater is
- 12:59Speaker 4: the guy we talked about last year with the Unicorn fastball.
- 13:01Speaker 4: It's listed as a sinker. He throws kind of way low,
- 13:05Speaker 4: he's way across his body, and he's left handed, and
- 13:07Speaker 4: he throws hard. All those things help, but it spins
- 13:10Speaker 4: like a sinker and rides like a fastball. He throws
- 13:12Speaker 4: a pitch that, as far as we know, no one
- 13:14Speaker 4: else can throw like the spin that hit or see
- 13:17Speaker 4: see something that's going to run away from him as
- 13:19Speaker 4: rieties and then it doesn't. And now he's added his slider,
- 13:23Speaker 4: which is like slower than a lot and kind of
- 13:25Speaker 4: goes down and doesn't break as much as other sliders
- 13:27Speaker 4: that move that way. So it's a different way. But
- 13:29Speaker 4: he's got two really unique pitches and that's what's made
- 13:31Speaker 4: him effective for a long period of time, even if
- 13:33Speaker 4: neither one of them really if you just take it
- 13:36Speaker 4: into a vacum, you're like, this is kind of weird.
- 13:38Speaker 4: I wouldn't teach anyone to do this. Maybe maybe the
- 13:41Speaker 4: fastball I would teach you god to do the fastball.
- 13:43Speaker 4: I coun figure out how to do it, but the slider.
- 13:45Speaker 4: I wouldn't teach anyone to throw the slider. It just
- 13:47Speaker 4: worked for him. So it's like, that's what stuff plus
- 13:50Speaker 4: does well. It does a really good job of pointing
- 13:53Speaker 4: out those things. Even if stuff doesn't traditionally look either
- 13:57Speaker 4: good or bad. It doesn't. There is no really good
- 13:59Speaker 4: or bad. It's just outside of expectations.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Hey, you know, I've got one for you. I'm going
- 14:04Speaker 1: to bring in a fan question. And this is good
- 14:06Speaker 1: because I wanted to mix this pitcher into the show today.
- 14:08Speaker 1: So here's how we'll do it. Jose Soriano off to
- 14:11Speaker 1: a nasty, nasty start for the Angels and this fan
- 14:15Speaker 1: Tom is specifically bringing up his knuckle curveball. I mean,
- 14:19Speaker 1: we're seeing it upper eighties, he said, why is it
- 14:21Speaker 1: only one oh two? Stuff Plus? And I know I'm
- 14:24Speaker 1: putting you on the spot a little bit here, but
- 14:27Speaker 1: is there anything that can help explain why the pitch
- 14:29Speaker 1: doesn't get even more credit for what it's doing right
- 14:32Speaker 1: now in terms of swinging swinging miss in the zone.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that. I think that it's not crazy
- 14:39Speaker 2: to say that if you watch him, that the sinker
- 14:41Speaker 2: is his nastiest pitch, you know, if you were just
- 14:44Speaker 2: using your eyeball test, like it's a ninety nine mile
- 14:47Speaker 2: an hour bowling ball sinker with great movement, and I think,
- 14:52Speaker 2: you know, stuff loves that pitch. And you know, a
- 14:57Speaker 2: thing that I would do to kind of explain what
- 14:59Speaker 2: I've been trying to talk about with like the arm
- 15:01Speaker 2: angle expectation is if you go to their page on
- 15:06Speaker 2: baseball Savant, so that's the league stat page, they have
- 15:11Speaker 2: like a movement profile thing, and then you can if
- 15:14Speaker 2: you click on their arm angle, it shows their arm
- 15:17Speaker 2: angle and anything that's like on that arm angle is
- 15:23Speaker 2: expected movement to some extent. Right, so his curveball moves
- 15:28Speaker 2: exactly like you would expect if you saw his arm
- 15:31Speaker 2: angle is basically what I'm saying. So when you try
- 15:35Speaker 2: to assess how good that curveball is, you take movement
- 15:38Speaker 2: out to some extent because you say that movement is
- 15:40Speaker 2: exactly what you'd expect. You see that arm angle here
- 15:43Speaker 2: and it goes down like you could see it, right,
- 15:45Speaker 2: You could see it come out of his arm and
- 15:47Speaker 2: it goes right along his arm angle and it goes down.
- 15:50Speaker 2: What it is good for is it's eighty five miles
- 15:52Speaker 2: an hour, So it gets benefit of being eighty five
- 15:56Speaker 2: miles an hour, but it does not get benefit for
- 15:58Speaker 2: having a weird shape. So that's how you end up
- 16:01Speaker 2: with a slightly above average pitch. Good stuff.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Okay, last one for you here on the bat speed front.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Is there anyone in particular that you've seen so far
- 16:12Speaker 1: that makes you really concerned? I know you cover a
- 16:14Speaker 1: lot of fantasy baseball too, so maybe this helps fans
- 16:17Speaker 1: like that, or maybe it scares a fan of a
- 16:19Speaker 1: particular team, But you know, is there one player on
- 16:21Speaker 1: your list? We brought up Peter Anzo yesterday for our
- 16:25Speaker 1: discussion because it was down quite a bit, and you know,
- 16:28Speaker 1: he just has become a highly debated player based on
- 16:32Speaker 1: how the Mets evaluated him and then how the Orioles
- 16:34Speaker 1: picked him up. But feel free to go another route.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Yeah, so I went on this show last year and
- 16:43Speaker 2: you asked me a similar question, but it was about
- 16:45Speaker 2: a specific player and it was Juan Soto, and I
- 16:51Speaker 2: famously on the show set that I thought, you know,
- 16:55Speaker 2: the fact that his bat speed was down might mean
- 16:59Speaker 2: that his up end power was gone, and then he
- 17:02Speaker 2: might not hit forty homers. And of course, when he
- 17:05Speaker 2: did hit forty and forty one and whatever. I got
- 17:09Speaker 2: lots of messages all year, and so what I've tried
- 17:15Speaker 2: to add into my analysis. Because we've only had bat
- 17:19Speaker 2: speed for like three four years, I know it's really predictive.
- 17:23Speaker 2: I but once you have a track record from a
- 17:27Speaker 2: player that's a veteran, it's something that I care about
- 17:31Speaker 2: more With young players, so like Cam Smith, you know,
- 17:35Speaker 2: seventy seven miles an hour, Colts Keith seventy four miles
- 17:38Speaker 2: an hour, Mark Vento's getting back to his old bat speed.
- 17:42Speaker 2: I care about that. I care about it in a
- 17:44Speaker 2: positive way. But when I go to the minus side
- 17:47Speaker 2: and I see Rando Rosarina down four, or you know,
- 17:52Speaker 2: Pete Alonso down three miles an hour or Brandon lou
- 17:55Speaker 2: down three, what I've decided to do is not worry
- 17:59Speaker 2: as much about that. With veterans, what you'll see is
- 18:04Speaker 2: that they can figure out how to succeed with a
- 18:08Speaker 2: little bit lower batspeed. They've added plate discipline, contact anticipation.
- 18:14Speaker 2: I think Wan Soto is the smartest player in baseball, right,
- 18:16Speaker 2: so could his batspeed go down a little bit, and
- 18:18Speaker 2: yet he still knows the exact pitches to swing out
- 18:21Speaker 2: to Helmer on yes. And the last thing I would
- 18:25Speaker 2: I'll say is bat speed is not only a process metric,
- 18:28Speaker 2: but it is an outcome metric as well. So what
- 18:30Speaker 2: I'm saying is the pitcher has an effect on your
- 18:33Speaker 2: bat speed, and if the pitch is down the pipe,
- 18:36Speaker 2: you're going to have a better batspeed on it than
- 18:38Speaker 2: if it's a breaking ball that fooled you, or pitch
- 18:42Speaker 2: outside the zone or whatever. And so I would say,
- 18:46Speaker 2: preach patients with Pete Alonzo. It might still come around.
- 18:50Speaker 2: I'm not as worried about the minuses as I am
- 18:53Speaker 2: more excited about the pluses, especially when it comes to
- 18:57Speaker 2: older players with a track record.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Okay, so for the record, I just wanted to be
- 19:01Speaker 1: known I did actually did not remember that. You know,
- 19:04Speaker 1: I'm glad you brought it up. I did not remember that.
- 19:07Speaker 1: I'm sure Pierzinski did because he takes receive mentally on
- 19:11Speaker 1: everything and probably brought it up five more times.
- 19:14Speaker 6: You know, story said that soda has never been forty again.
- 19:17Speaker 6: But I'm glad he brought it up because part of
- 19:20Speaker 6: learning these new stats is evolving with the stats in
- 19:23Speaker 6: terms of how you can predict what's going to look
- 19:25Speaker 6: forward and also sometimes there's outliers.
- 19:29Speaker 2: And by the way, it's actually similar with stuff plus.
- 19:32Speaker 2: I care more about stuff Plus with young pitchers i've
- 19:35Speaker 2: never seen before coming up the first time in a
- 19:37Speaker 2: small sample than I care about if like Chris Sales,
- 19:40Speaker 2: stuff plus is down, you know, like you're you're like,
- 19:43Speaker 2: I think Krisale will figure it out, Like is this
- 19:45Speaker 2: stuff down a little bit? Maybe, but like do you
- 19:47Speaker 2: think he'll still strike out thirty percent? Probably? Yeah, So yeah,
- 19:50Speaker 2: it's the same way, like these tools are best used
- 19:53Speaker 2: for younger players without a track record early on in
- 19:55Speaker 2: their careers than they are. To tell you that Pete A. Lance,
- 19:59Speaker 2: I'm not going to say. I'm not saying. I am
- 20:00Speaker 2: not saying that petere A Lonzo won't hit forty homers
- 20:03Speaker 2: this year. No, don't cut that up to say that
- 20:05Speaker 2: I said it clip.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Our social team was like ready for the endpoint and
- 20:10Speaker 1: they can't find it.
- 20:12Speaker 2: I'm not doing it. Won't hit.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Mute to you again.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Sorry, you know, piece together together?
- 20:23Speaker 3: Well, I loved it.
- 20:24Speaker 4: I loved it.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Great segment. You know, thanks for popping on much more
- 20:27Speaker 1: for you know in the Athletic with these articles and
- 20:29Speaker 1: on rates and virals. His show that also includes Trevor
- 20:32Speaker 1: every week. Appreciate you, you know, great catching up ma'am.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Thanks guys,
