- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Friday, it is the 8th of
- 0:16November. Well done making it through to
- 0:19the end of the week. My brain has turned to mush and
- 0:23that is OK because the weekend is just around the corner when
- 0:27it will slowly put itself back together again.
- 0:30Oh I hope you are going well and I hope the weekend ahead is full
- 0:34of promise as we take a moment out of our Friday to read a
- 0:38Psalm together. Oh, and today's Psalm is a
- 0:41genuine crackerjack of a Psalm. I would have to say this is my
- 0:46first favourite Psalm. I've had many favourite psalms,
- 0:50and many psalms are continuing to be my favourite as I come
- 0:53across them and read them at different times in my life, but
- 0:56this was the first one that just struck me.
- 0:59This is a Psalm that was read at my grandfather's funeral and it
- 1:03just hit me as a little kid as the most incredible thing I'd
- 1:08ever heard. And it continues to be a special
- 1:10one for me, telling me just how precious I am to the God of the
- 1:16universe. It's the first time my brain
- 1:18understood the paradox or didn't necessarily understand.
- 1:21I still don't understand it, but was confronted with the paradox
- 1:25of an awesome God of the universe who comes to me
- 1:29intimately with love. How fantastic.
- 1:33Let us read this together, friends.
- 1:35This is a Psalm for the choir director, a Psalm of David.
- 1:39Psalm 139. O Lord, you have examined my
- 1:53heart and know everything about me.
- 1:57You know when I sit down or stand up.
- 2:01You know my thoughts when I'm far away.
- 2:04You see me when I travel and when I rest at home.
- 2:08You know everything I do. You know what I'm going to say
- 2:13even before I say it. Lord, you go before me and
- 2:18follow me. You place Your hand of blessing
- 2:21on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful
- 2:25for me, too great for me to understand.
- 2:29I can never escape from Your spirit.
- 2:31I can never get away from Your presence.
- 2:34If I go up to heaven, you are there.
- 2:38If I go down to the grave, you are there.
- 2:42If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the
- 2:46farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me and your
- 2:52strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide
- 2:56me and the light around me to become night, but even in
- 3:00darkness I cannot hide from you. To you, the night shines as
- 3:07bright as day. Darkness and light are the same
- 3:12to you. You made all the delicate inner
- 3:16parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb.
- 3:22Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex.
- 3:27Your workmanship is marvellous. How well I know it.
- 3:32You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I
- 3:38was woven together in the dark of the womb.
- 3:42You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was
- 3:47recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before
- 3:52a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts
- 3:57about me. O God, I cannot be numbered.
- 4:01I can't even count them. They outnumber the grains of
- 4:04sand. And when I wake up, you are
- 4:08still with me. Oh, God, if only you would
- 4:12destroy the wicked. Get out of my life, you
- 4:15murderers. Ah, they blasphemy you.
- 4:18Your enemies misuse your name. Oh, Lord, shouldn't I hate those
- 4:25who hate you? Shouldn't I despise those who
- 4:28oppose you? Yes, I hate them with total
- 4:31hatred, for your enemies are my enemies.
- 4:36Search me, O God, and know my heart.
- 4:40Test me and know my anxious thoughts.
- 4:45Point out everything in me that offends You and lead me along
- 4:50the path of everlasting life. Ah Lord, here I am before you, a
- 5:07newborn baby being knitted together, You, the architect of
- 5:12every cell in my body and every moment of my life.
- 5:18Doesn't happen by coincidence or chance, but every day is planned
- 5:23out by You before a single one of them has come to pass.
- 5:30Oh Father, you know me so intimately.
- 5:34You know all of us so intimately.
- 5:38Our deepest desires of our hearts, the foibles of our
- 5:44personality and the gifts that you have hidden within us that
- 5:49You slowly nurture to life for Your glory and for the good of
- 5:55the world. Oh Father, thank you for this
- 5:59intimate love that you have for each one of us.
- 6:03It really does boggle our minds that you, the mighty God of all,
- 6:10is the intimate Saviour of us. So we open our hearts before
- 6:17You. We have nothing to hide from
- 6:20you. We are yours and we love you,
- 6:24and we pray all of this in your gentle, intimate, loving name,
- 6:29Jesus, Amen.
