- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27Hello everyone, my name is Clayton O'Callaghan.
- 0:30I'm a track and field and cross country coach at the University
- 0:33of New Orleans. That's a small mid major D1
- 0:39institution that's part of the Southland Conference.
- 0:43Wanted to do a topic that I don't think is necessarily
- 0:48covered enough and that is the recruiting process for people.
- 0:55So this podcast is going to be kind of focused on primarily for
- 1:00high school coaches. If you have any parents or any
- 1:05high school athletes that are interested in understanding a
- 1:08little bit more of how the recruiting process works in
- 1:13general. And then to also talk about how
- 1:17the recruiting process has been affected due to the recent house
- 1:22settlements. So try to do a broad overview
- 1:26and hopefully you can answer some questions for you along the
- 1:30way. So first, I want to establish
- 1:34the recruiting timeline for track and field and cross
- 1:37country prospective student athletes.
- 1:41We as college coaches, particularly at the Vision One
- 1:46level, we are not allowed to begin communicating with
- 1:51athletes until after June 1st of them going into their junior
- 1:57year. So right now, class of 2027,
- 2:02we're able to start communicating with them.
- 2:05Obviously Class 2026, we're able to communicate with that being
- 2:10said, so if you're a coach or a parent of an athlete that's
- 2:16really interested, you know, and they're incoming freshmen or
- 2:20sophomores and they're reaching out or, or you're reaching out
- 2:24to us, I love that. But also understand that you may
- 2:29not get an answer. And most likely the answer that
- 2:32you're going to receive is, hey, we have to wait until June 1st
- 2:38going into your junior year to begin conversations.
- 2:41So if you send out emails and you're not necessarily getting a
- 2:44response, it's not that a coach is ignoring you, it's more that
- 2:49they are trying to follow the guidelines.
- 2:53Now, if you're a high school coach and you have an athlete or
- 2:58a group of athletes that have expressed interest in competing
- 3:02collegiately or that you see, hey, there's, they definitely
- 3:07have a chance to, to do this. What I would recommend starting
- 3:13to do with them is sit them down and walk them through creating
- 3:19the NCAA eligibility account. And to do that, it's very
- 3:24simple. Get on the Internet, go to NCAA
- 3:28eligibility Center search and you can register and create your
- 3:33account. What that account does, you'll
- 3:35essentially go in, fill out a questionnaire.
- 3:38The student will get their transcripts submitted by their
- 3:42school's counseling office. Any of their test scores,
- 3:46ACTSAT, anything like that will also get submitted there.
- 3:52Once they create this account, they will receive an ID number.
- 3:56Tell them, make sure that they keep that someplace handy as
- 4:00they're going through the recruiting process.
- 4:03Universities will ask for that ID number and it really just
- 4:08helps everything run a lot smoother.
- 4:11It's kind of becomes a one stop shop where a program's able to
- 4:16go through the recruits profile, make sure everything is good on
- 4:20the academic side and able to go forward from there.
- 4:25The best thing about this account is it is free to create.
- 4:29So even if you have some student athletes that aren't sure if
- 4:34they want to compete or are still on the fence, have them
- 4:40create the account. It it's free it, it's better to
- 4:45have it then be scrambling at the last minute to go ahead and
- 4:49create. And then as they're going
- 4:52through the recruiting process and they're ready to start doing
- 4:56official visit scholarship offers, all of that fun stuff,
- 5:01then they can go ahead and pay the $100 activation fee.
- 5:06But like I said, it's free to create to set up that account.
- 5:11And I would highly recommend for any students that you see that
- 5:16potentially would want to continue competing past their
- 5:19high school days, like help them with creating that account.
- 5:26If you as a coach are going to help any of your athletes going
- 5:30through the recruiting process, I would make sure to emphasize
- 5:36to them that just because your recruiting window opens June 1st
- 5:42going into junior year, that does not mean that programs are
- 5:47immediately going to be calling you.
- 5:50Especially now with the house settlement and as things are
- 5:54getting adjusted, I think recruiting is going to run a
- 5:59little bit slower in terms of just getting the process started
- 6:03as everyone is trying to figure out exactly what is the move
- 6:08going forward. And even on top of that, a lot
- 6:13of programs use a cross country and beginning of track season of
- 6:19a prospect junior year to kind of do their own self evaluation
- 6:24of the prospect. And then they'll begin reaching
- 6:29out towards the end of outdoor or during the summer time going
- 6:32into that prospects senior year. So again, I would just reiterate
- 6:37that too. If you have any athletes that
- 6:40are worried that they're not getting anyone to reach out to
- 6:44them, hey, it's fine, you're good.
- 6:48Just keep doing your thing. This is just kind of how the
- 6:51process is is going to work for the time being.
- 6:57As I've mentioned before, the house settlement that was just
- 7:00passed is definitely changing the landscape of college
- 7:05athletics and obviously track and field in in those ways.
- 7:10So just a a brief overview of what the house settlement is.
- 7:17Universities are now able to share revenue with athletes up
- 7:23to about 20% of the department's revenue or I think the hard cap
- 7:27for this year's is 20 million. Majority of those funds are
- 7:35going to be going to football and men's and women's
- 7:41basketball. Unfortunately, not a lot of
- 7:43revenue sharing seems to be going towards the track side of
- 7:49things. Also included in the house
- 7:52settlement was increased roster sizes and scholarships allotted
- 8:01per per team. Track and field can now have a
- 8:05roster limit of 45 athletes per gender.
- 8:09In cross country, can now have 17 athletes per gender on their
- 8:15roster. Obviously if you are a cross
- 8:17country athlete that also is going to participate in track,
- 8:22then you will count on on both rosters.
- 8:25But so now there's a hard limit on there.
- 8:29Now that is the NCAA rule. Conferences have since then put
- 8:34in further rules to kind of level the playing field within
- 8:40the conference. Most notably, the SEC has
- 8:45imposed a 35 man roster limit to all men's track and field
- 8:50programs and a ten man roster limit to all of their cross
- 8:54country programs as well. And with the house settlement,
- 9:00you can have up to the same number of scholarships as your
- 9:06roster limit. So if your roster limit is 45 on
- 9:11the women's side, theoretically you could have 45 scholarships
- 9:16on your women's roster. But like I said, there's a
- 9:21conferences are doing are kind of setting their own parameters
- 9:25to keep things. Some conferences are keeping
- 9:29that the scholarship limits have to be the same as they were
- 9:34before the house settlement was agreed on, which the previous
- 9:38numbers were 12.6 scholarships for the men and 18 scholarships
- 9:45for the women. So why am I saying all this?
- 9:51There's a lot of moving pieces and programs are still trying to
- 9:56figure out what their roster size and how that scholarship
- 10:01breakdown is going to look. I've had friends and colleagues
- 10:08that have talked to throughout the summer and constantly
- 10:12changing, you know, one thing, one day they're told one thing,
- 10:15next day, you know, they had to make an adjustment and things
- 10:19like that. Which is why, again, I said, if
- 10:24you particularly have any juniors and they're not getting
- 10:29a ton of communication or anything right now, tell them
- 10:35not not to worry. Again, there's a lot of moving
- 10:39pieces and programs are are trying to get everything
- 10:42finalized as they go forward in this new landscape for the NCAA.
- 10:49As a coach, I would say, you know, now probably more than
- 10:54ever, make sure that your athletes understand that there
- 10:59are multiple routes that they can go if competing collegiately
- 11:04is their dream. Obviously majority of athletes
- 11:08want to compete at a large school and, and things like
- 11:11that. But the reality is with these
- 11:14roster limits, you know, those are spots that there's not as
- 11:17many spots available now. So, but there are some really
- 11:21good programs and competitions, competition levels at the D1 mid
- 11:29major level, D2D3, NAI, etcetera.
- 11:34So I would definitely make sure to reiterate that to any of my
- 11:40athletes that are looking to compete collegiately.
- 11:42You know, hey, let's also keep an eye on this one thing that
- 11:47whenever I bring recruits in personally, I provide them with
- 11:53kind of a breakdown of what it took within our conference the
- 11:56last couple years to score in in different events.
- 11:59And a lot of times athletes are are really surprised at the
- 12:03marks that are being put down at a mid major conference.
- 12:08So make sure they just kind of help them realize that, hey,
- 12:13it's not it doesn't have to just be a big school.
- 12:15There are some really good levels of competition and you
- 12:18can go have success here, you know, at at various levels.
- 12:24It doesn't have to just be at at the Power 4 level.
- 12:29Again, that's another thing that I talk about with recruits
- 12:32whenever they come on visits, you know, at a smaller program,
- 12:36you know you're going to, I'm going to make be able to get you
- 12:39a lot more opportunities then maybe some of the larger
- 12:42programs to compete and develop and and get better.
- 12:47And you never know what that can lead to down the road for you.
- 12:51So I again, I would just re make sure to reiterate to them
- 12:55throughout the whole process that there are multiple avenues
- 12:59that they could go if if competing in college athletics
- 13:04is really something that they're interested in and want to do.
- 13:08So a quick recap. Like I said, the world is, is
- 13:12constantly changing, especially now in college athletics as
- 13:16everyone is getting adapted to these new rules and, and this
- 13:24life post house settlement. Biggest thing.
- 13:29I, I would again make sure that reiterating patients, you know,
- 13:34as, as programs are, are trying to figure things out and really
- 13:39kind of get stuff going. I would expect that by October,
- 13:44you know, everyone kind of will will know what's what's their
- 13:47plan going for, what's the direction that their program
- 13:52needs to go in terms of moving forward.
- 13:56So have a little bit of patience.
- 13:59Setting up the the eligibility center, I think is going to be
- 14:03is always crucial. But you know, if you have an
- 14:07athlete and you're able to help them get that process set up
- 14:10that once recruiting really starts picking up that kind of
- 14:13can put them ahead of the game, that can really help them out.
- 14:17And it looks, I mean, as a college coach myself, I think
- 14:23having an athlete that has all that stuff that that's a big
- 14:26check box check mark for me just shows that they're on top of
- 14:30their stuff. They understand the process and
- 14:33what's going on from there. But yeah, I just reiterate to
- 14:40them, be patient, ask questions about what's the the plan for
- 14:45the program in, in terms of roster size and and things like
- 14:50that going forward. Because at the end of the day, I
- 14:53think we all want our athletes to go to the best place for them
- 14:58to have success, not just on the on the track, but also
- 15:03academically making sure that they are set up to have success.
- 15:07I hope this answers any questions that that you guys may
