[upbeat rock music] Good evening, good afternoon, good morning And if I don't see you later, have a pleasant tomorrow [laughs]
• 0:26
Hey, everybody. It's Full Spectrum Cycling. Hey, Dr. Nick. Number 73. Oof. We're old. [laughs] And it's August, and it's kinda hot out still. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. Humid. Little humid. Little humid.
• 0:43
JK did a little rolling around town today. Yeah, more, more so than I was planning on it. Yeah, I know. Not a lot of bars open at 9:00, 9:30 in the morning, I noticed. [laughs] But Sally's was. That's all that counts.
• 0:54
Yeah, Sally's was, but my office was closed. Mm-hmm. And that was kinda my turnaround point. I was like, "No, then I'm really... I'm hurting for it if I'm going all the way to Zad's", which I know will be open.
• 1:06
Yeah, but you- [laughs] And there's no... I don't really- No... I didn't really need to go that far. No. Go see old Ma- But you could go see-... old Ma down there.
• 1:12
Yeah, yeah You probably would've stopped at Dinardo by though, so. True. True. True. Yeah, or see the Marcus making his arrival. Yeah, that too. [laughs] I was just like, "Okay, well, uh..." And then went for...
• 1:26
Then got home, went to lunch, another six miles in there, bing, bing. Nice. And then another pickup, the lady from work, and then come here. And then like on the way here, I'm like, "Jesus, I'm tired.
• 1:39
Why am I so t- Oh, I know why I'm so freaking tired." [laughs] You rode a lot and it's very hot out. I rode a e-bike yesterday. Oh, you didn't break your shit? Like- Is it gone? It's gone. Like, God damn Simon.
• 1:49
Oh, wait, let me look. Ah, thank God, it's gone. Simon was not riding a motherfucking e-bike. Yeah, he was. No, he was not. Why do you say such words? Hey, e-bike. E-bikes are fun. That thing's insane.
• 2:02
Chewy says he's gonna call in and talk about it. Yeah. Oh, okay.
• 2:05
If you, if you read anything about the- All right, well, hold on, you know, I didn't- If you read that article I sent, you know, you couldn't ride it on the streets in Australia.
• 2:13
If you had it in Europe, you'd have to be wearing a helmet and pads, and yet this buffoon gets on it without looking at anything, and it rolls over on top of him. Yeah.
• 2:23
At least he was man enough to admit you should read the manual when you buy a bike this expensive- Mm... which isn't a bike. I didn't read the article. [laughs] I've just been reading headlines.
• 2:34
[laughs] We- welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line? Are you guys talking about my best friend? [laughs] Yeah, is, is your best friend Simon Cowell? Yeah. Yeah, I thought so. You know, it's,
• 2:49
it, it just shows you, once again, the evils of e-bikes, right? [laughs] It's not an e-bike. [laughs] Jesus Christ- Oh, it's right. It was a-... it's not an e-bike.
• 2:56
It's a electric motorcycle- Have you seen the picture of it?... with pedals. A, a moped. To- Tony's getting animated now, and he's getting very animated. Yeah. Okay. That's, that's- And he's yelling...
• 3:05
it's an electric moped. He's yelling a lot. I am yelling a lot. And I forgot the- Yeah... damn pop filter. Hey, Chewy, how are you? [laughs] Oh, how are you guys? Hey. I'm good. I'm, I'm good too. Thanks for calling in.
• 3:15
Chewy's on the line, folks. So- No, that- The o- There's a, there's a whole nother level there, you guys. Come on. People don't go out... Well, some people do.
• 3:24
Don't go out and drop, you know, $8,000 on a electric vehicle that goes 65 miles an hour and then die. The, uh, the, the, um,
• 3:36
the, the one that, you look it up, you look up that company online, the ones they have online is $20,000. [laughs] Holy mackerel. Yeah. So, like one minute's worth of his time. Yeah. Right. As sad as that is. Yeah.
• 3:50
Have you s- uh, Chewy, have you seen the, uh, the Ewan McGregor, um, motorcycle trip going from the, I think it's from the tip of South America- Yeah... to Alaska- Oh, I heard about that... on- I didn't remember that...
• 4:01
on Harley-Davidson's- Is it an e-bike?... e- electric motorcycles? [laughs] Yeah. Oh, Lord. Um- I didn't remember that part. [laughs]...
• 4:07
Tanner sold, oh, oh, I think Tanner sold his first one down in, uh, Austin, Texas this last week. I think that, uh- And-...
• 4:16
Ewan and his buddy had them specially prepared more like adventure bikes than, you know, street bikes, but I think that's kinda interesting, uh, that they could do 11,000 miles.
• 4:26
I don't know how many generators they had to pull on a trailer behind the things to keep them going, but- Right.
• 4:33
I'm sure- I, I- Yeah, I'd like to know what the final dollar value- They're, they're god awful expensive They're 30 grand a piece. They're god awful expensive, I know that. Yeah. They're...
• 4:41
But I, ah, I'd have to ask Tan- I'd have to check with Tanner, but they, when Tanner was re- reading the specs off to me about them, they're a pretty impressive, uh, you know, I would put them in the category of a Tesla.
• 4:55
You know, they've g- they've got their, they've got everything figured out before they went into production with them, so I think it's a, a pretty good bike.
• 5:01
And I really d- I seriously don't have a problem with an e-motorcycle at all. Except for I like noise, so it's- I think it probably has a speaker on it that goes, "Vroom."
• 5:12
I think they actually do have something weird like that. Yeah, you can't have something that makes no noise. Well, that's like- That's silly. Right.
• 5:20
Wasn't that, wasn't that one that, for a while there with, uh, with all the electric cars that they were talking about that they had to make a different tread pattern on the tires so that they actually made some sound so that pedestrians were aware that there's a car around?
• 5:32
It, especially blind pedestrians is what that was all about. Yes. [laughs] Yeah. So have you s- have you- It'd be easy, you know- Have you started playing with your, uh, podcasting gear yet?
• 5:47
Yeah, I feel like kind of a creep.
• 5:48
I just sit out here in the shop by myself and, like, pretend I'm interviewing whoever, and then I listen back and it's like, A, I sound like crap, and B, it's kinda creepy sitting out here talking to yourself.
• 5:59
So- [laughs]... I think- [laughs] You sound pretty good on the phone... but I think Martin- Well, this is not bad.
• 6:07
Um, I think tomorrow night I'm gonna try to, even though he's not in the bike industry anymore, I think I'm gonna try to do my first podcast with Sav. Gonna decor into a Sav just 'cause nothing else.
• 6:17
He's an awesome guy to talk to. Sure, and he was in the bike industry for long enough, so. Yeah. Yep. Uh, although he does ride an e-bike, so, you know. But, uh, um- I'd like him even more... I'll wait.
• 6:27
Um, he has a couple of interest... He's got interesting comments. I'm gonna let him talk. [laughs] So is he... How's Cardboard Robot doing during these COVID times?
• 6:38
Well, um, actually I think they're doing really well because he does those, you know, um, they do mailing and, um, and, and curbside and that's working well.
• 6:47
And with all the kids being stuck at home, um, parents are looking for something to do, so I think he's doing well. Sounds good. Sounds good. It's, uh, it's, it... I think it's just cardboardrobot.com.
• 6:58
Should check it out. He's got a lot of old school crafts and Estes rockets and- Nice... stuff to play with basically- Yeah... and become a kid again- But to learn from... with, with your kids. And learn You know?
• 7:08
To learn from, that's key. Remember that Estes rocket that had the clear top on it and you could put like flies and stuff in there? Yes. [laughs] And then there was the one that had the- Right...
• 7:19
the, you could put an egg in it and the goal was to try and get it to come back without breaking the egg. What? I didn't know about that one. Well, maybe we just made them that way. I don't know. I don't know.
• 7:27
[laughs] Sounds like a cool idea. He, he does, he does shoot... He does do the rockets though and all that. That's one of the things they've got in there. I used to live on a farm- Yeah...
• 7:35
in, in, in Wisconsin and it, we had a, a sod farm adjacent to ours and it was huge, and it was a perfect place to launch rockets. [laughs] Sounds like a perfect place. [laughs] You could never miss.
• 7:44
You could never lose one basically. Yeah. [laughs] Well, yeah. Our, my house was, my, my parent's house was next to the original Rochester Airport.
• 7:54
So when they moved out, that area was just sat there empty, and they would go out and shoot them off on the, uh, on the runways. That was really fun. Wow. That does sound like fun. Chewy, do you know who Matt Hoffman is?
• 8:09
BMX dude. Matt? Big BMX guy. I think I do. Old school. I just, uh- Yeah, I think I know who he is...
• 8:17
so my normal punk rock T-shirt website, Bifocal Media, where you can find all your old school punk rock band T-shirts you might be looking for, has a Matt Hoffman T-shirt now. That's pretty cool. [laughs] Oh, cool.
• 8:30
I gotta take a gander at this later. And also, uh, the FBM guys, uh, Fat Bald Men Bikes. [laughs] Another, another BMX bike company. So kinda interesting that they intermix obviously the punk with the BMX scene.
• 8:44
Oh, that's neat. Especially old school, with a K. [laughs] Well, think about Death to Earl. I mean, that was, Earl was punk rock and, and BMX. He, he even kinda got...
• 8:55
I don't know if he necessarily started it, but up in Minneapolis here they had kind of a retro BMX race series going for a while. And he's... His, his cars are coffins too, right? Yep. Right, his cars are coffins. Yeah.
• 9:08
Nice. Yeah. No, I think he just, I think he just rides around on his bike and takes pictures of his bikes leaning against stuff. He's one of those guys. [laughs] Drive side out, Earl. Drive side out.
• 9:19
[laughs] Oh, hell, I could spend a lot of money on this damn site. Yeah.
• 9:25
[laughs] I got, I, I got a link in the show notes, so if, if you're an old school, uh- As soon as I see that one and then all of a sudden I look down, there's a Steve Caballero, Ian McKay, a JFA. Yep. Fricking aah.
• 9:35
They're all there. All our, all our old heroes. I, I mentally just spent about $400. I'm gonna- [laughs]... go back to the show notes please. That's where I got my Bullzig T-shirt. Right on. [laughs] Yeah, so. Yep.
• 9:48
Hey, a bike shop's moving out of our neighborhood, uh, Chewy. One of our, our local- Oh... our local Fixation Bike Shop, if you're familiar with those guys. Where are they moving to? Oh, yeah, I know Fixation guys. Yeah.
• 9:59
Yeah. Well, they were three blocks from our shop, but now they're gonna be- Oh, back up there... further away, over at the, uh, Pedal... I think it's called Pedal Milwaukee or something. Mm-hmm.
• 10:07
What's the building called? Well, it's, uh, yeah, the, where they were. Yeah. They- Essentially where- I think, I think that they ended up buying a building that's on the Hank Aaron Trail on the south side of town.
• 10:16
Oh, cool. So we'll see what they end up doing over there. I know they had just remodeled over the winter, uh, downsizing because they warehouse stuff at the new joint. And I don't know if it was the COVID thing or...
• 10:29
They just got broken into a couple weeks ago and couple of, uh, carbon fat bikes were stolen and I'm, uh, I'm not sure- Oh, I didn't know that...
• 10:36
if that was a, if that was the final straw or what, but they're, they're- Hm... well, there's less bikes in River West or, uh, bike shops in River West now. Bike shops in River West. So that's kinda cool.
• 10:47
I, speaking of- Spend money here... new bikes in your shop, I, I stepped into, uh, Deke's shop on Saturday. He has three brand new bikes. One Soma and two Surlys, and that's all he has in the shop right now. Over there.
• 11:00
[laughs] Oneota River Cycles? Yes. Yeah. How, how about, uh, Decorah? And, and he's- What do they have at Decorah Bikes? I can't go in there.
• 11:08
You can't get past the front door without tripping over a fucking e-bike, so I didn't even go in that place. [laughs] Well, we got, we sold, uh, one of our Roll GR1s, uh, yesterday. Two days ago Tony sold that puppy.
• 11:20
So we're down to one, two, three, three new bikes in the store. It's, uh, funny you should say that- [laughs] It's rough... 'cause I just messaged, I just messaged Sean. It's- I got a, I got a Surly Lowside.
• 11:30
I've got a large Roll- I'm very-... C1 and a small Roll A1. I'm buying- So that's it... I'm buying- We got no other new bikes in here... the Lowside. [laughs] A lot of new beautiful frames, but- Got a lot of frames.
• 11:42
We could build custom bikes if we could get parts for them, which is a challenge. Well, I was gonna say, and then there's your next problem, right? Which is a challenge, yeah. Yeah.
• 11:48
I've got a, I've got a bike we're, we're doing an upgrade on and trying to find a, you know, a 110 chain ring with a, you know, drop stop teeth on it. Challenge. Yeah, yeah.
• 11:58
It's just like [laughs] everywhere you turn it's, there's nothing available out there. Yeah. At, at any kind of reasonable price, you know? Well, he j- I was just...
• 12:06
I have a, a girl that just brought in an old cruiser and just trying to find- A 26 by 25 old school tires, like nobody has any, at least in stock.
• 12:16
I mean, there might be a shop that's got someplace, but just doing a quick through the wholesalers, I haven't found any.
• 12:21
Well, then you're gonna wanna make them tubeless too, 'cause you can't get tubes for them anymore either. Oh, I never thought about that.
• 12:27
[laughs] So her $50 bike is gonna- her $50 bike is gonna be about 400 when she gets back. [laughs] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 12:33
Well, I, I was making an argument, you know, it, before COVID even started, had started a story on, you know, if you're gonna go to a bike shop and spend five, six, $700 even on a new bike,
• 12:45
you might be better off putting that same basic amount of money into an old school bike that you have at home that's a really nice frame.
• 12:51
Maybe it was a Mazzi or it was a, a good quality Trek frame from the old school days. Mm-hmm. And you're gonna, you're gonna put new parts on it, and you may have a better riding bike than you would have had otherwise.
• 13:02
Totally agree with that. Um- Old school Trek steel bikes- Oh, I agree... make great bikes. Yep. Mine's a one by 10. Any of the old MultiTrack stuff, those are great frames.
• 13:11
I'm running a four, 400 with a one by 10 drive train now with a 52 up front, and it's a fantastic bike to ride around town. Oh. Good stuff. Yep. The Molly and- Oh, I still, I still ride my Hansons-...
• 13:23
the Molly and Colin machine still do-... because that's basically what that is. What's that? I kind of still like riding my Hansons around because th- that's the, that's somewhat what the, what they're like.
• 13:34
They were just, uh, a double frame. Mm-hmm. And a C double frame. Put what you want on them. It's, I really like that bike.
• 13:41
It's, um, I don't wanna say it's a neutral frame geometry, but it's, it's ri- it's the old Bianchi stuff, or not Bianchi, I'm sorry. It's the old, uh, drink some geometry type stuff. Yeah. Good stuff. Right on, dude.
• 13:54
Well, thanks for calling in- All right... and telling us all about your- Yep, thank you... uh, your Simon stuff. Yeah. What are you drinking? I, uh, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm glad that he didn't, you know...
• 14:03
[bell rings] Well, he did drink- Here, go ahead and do that. I have to go to hockey practice with little kids, so I don't get that. Ah. Oh. All right. Well, we just went simple with- All right... Hazy Rabbit today, so.
• 14:15
Yeah. Have one when you get home. Next time we talk to you, you'll have one. I will do that. I'll have one when I get back. I'll, I'll be thinking about you guys. Not. [laughs] See you guys. Oh, see you there. Later.
• 14:25
Later, bro. All right. See you guys. See ya. [laughs] All right, bye. Chewy, ladies and gentlemen. I, uh, tried to convince, uh, John Goodman, not the actor, to call in, give us his opinion about his GR1.
• 14:39
And, uh- Well, he's only had it for two days... he said, "I just wanna let you know I've been riding my b- my fat ass has been on this bike every day, and I have no more nut numbness."
• 14:47
[laughs] Which was his problem with his GT something that was the heaviest aluminum bike I ever built for him. I'm like, "Dude, this thing is just a tank." Well, the GR1 has that nice, um, Brooks- Brooks saddle...
• 15:00
saddle on it. Yeah, yeah. The, what is the, what's the model of that thing? I forget what they call it. The CR1 Cadmium something. It's the, it's the rubber one. Yeah. CR17? With the cutout in it- Yeah...
• 15:11
for your nad area, for your- [laughs]... for your perineal gland or whatever's down there. The string. Sweet. [laughs] Holy- Sweet... holy freaking frack, we got another caller, folks. Oh, my God. Ladies and gentlemen.
• 15:25
[laughs] Who do we have on the line? [laughs] Oh, I know that laugh. [laughs] It's Big Sexy, yo. What's going on, y'all? Hey, hey. Just, uh, kind of sweating in the shop, sweating with the oldies here.
• 15:39
[laughs] Wait, wait, y- you lost your AC or something? Oh, we never have AC here yet. [laughs] That c- that costs- Oh... that costs real money. You don't wanna, you don't wanna spend money on that- Oh, oh...
• 15:49
when you can buy a new, you know, chain ring or something. Right. Well, um, there are several things I'd love to talk to you guys about. Um, I just wanna give you multiple choice. [laughs] Okay.
• 16:03
Um, A, A, how much Illinois sucks. [laughs] Well, you already know that. B- [laughs]... how awesome I am, and C, the Katy Trail. The Katy Trail?
• 16:21
Yeah. Oh, my God. Well, did, did, did, did you just choose? C- Sounds like it... C sounds like what we're- C sounds like a good time. Yeah. I mean, we know how awesome you are. We're, we're w- in Wisconsin.
• 16:31
We know all the trees in Wisconsin bend south because Illinois sucks. [laughs] So- Yes... we know that. [laughs] Oh, my God.
• 16:39
Okay, so really quick about Illinois sucks, there's no shoulders, and the, the, the people don't, don't know how to drive in this fucking state. Anyway, the Katy Trail, right?
• 16:51
It starts in a, it starts in a little place like, uh, it's called Sunset Hill or... God, I hope I got that name right. But, um, it's just, just outside of Kansas City, and it goes all the way to St. Louis,
• 17:06
and it goes through Jefferson City and all that, and it's a nice firm but dirt trail, and it's mostly flat, and it goes all the way through to Missouri, all the way from Kansas City to St. Louis. Huh. Wow.
• 17:23
And I was... I, a- and, and some of the views and some of the... Oh, and the... Like, to, to, to your left is a cliff that goes up 350 feet, and you got, like, warning signs saying, "Watch for falling rock."
• 17:40
I'm like, if- [laughs]... I'm watching for fall... If, if, if, if falling rock is any of my concern, it's not, I'm not gonna see it. It's gonna hit me right in the fucking head. [laughs] So does it follow a river?
• 17:51
But, um, but it really i- it's right alongside the Missouri River. Gotcha. And that river is so fat and so huge, but I'm guessing that it is too shallow because I don't, I di- I never saw a single boat on it.
• 18:10
Hmm. Huh. Um, I, I don't, I don't know the facts. I, I mean, I, I probably should have stopped and read those signs along the way.
• 18:19
Um, but, um, but I know that Lewis and Clark, when Lewis and Clark went through- Thank goodness... it's just a Missouri river, and they camped out right alongside the Missouri River, right there on the Katy Trail.
• 18:31
And, uh, it's a big part of Americana and, uh, why we are here today. You betcha. Yeah, I, I spent a bunch of time on it up in, um, South Dakota where they've, they've dammed it up and made really big lakes.
• 18:44
So it's definitely, you know, deep and boatable up there. But that's, uh- Yeah... that, that's somewhat after Lewis and Clark's time. Oh, I'm sorry, a small penis truck is driving around right now.
• 18:57
[laughs] I heard the p-p-p-p-p-p-p. My God, you know, th- these, these trucks that are so goddamn loud, and it's like, oh, y- you need, you... Oh, maybe you could make your truck a little bit louder. Nah.
• 19:13
Jesus Christ, man. I mean, I, I know you got a small dick, but come on, don't take it out on the rest of us. [laughs] All right, dude, we got another caller we're gonna get to. Um, where are you headed next? Oh,
• 19:27
well, I'm, I'm, I'm on my way to Indianapolis. Um, I'm not, um, I'm not holding out high hopes for Indiana, but at least it's part of the mission. Illinois right now is... I, I mean, I already did Springfield.
• 19:40
Illinois is just in the fucking way right now. Isn't your, isn't your buddy Mike Pence from, uh, Indiana? Mm-hmm. Mike Pence? Yeah. You could, you could say, "Hey, Mike." Well, uh, he, he, he's not my buddy.
• 19:52
But, um, but you know what? Uh, Trump just signed a little something, something that might fund my trip for the rest of the way so I don't have to beg for y'all from, for PayPal or anything like that, so- Wait.
• 20:03
I was looking for that thing- I-... the other day. I was gonna put it on your birthday show, but I couldn't find the, uh, what's the, uh, PayPal link. Uh. I'll put it in again.
• 20:11
The, the PayPal, the, the PayPal link is paypal.me/beckhouse504. Oh, okay. Gotcha. Or y- you, you can go to, you can go to Heather, Heather the Tricycle on Facebook.
• 20:26
And, uh, you can go to Heather the Tricycle on Facebook and there's a link to my PayPal right away. Now, is that other caller, uh, Dave Luntz, because I told him that it'd be cool if we called in at the same time.
• 20:38
[laughs] It just might be. Welcome to the radio program. Dave, Dave, do you- Second caller. Who do we have on the line? [laughs] Well, it just might be Dave Luntz. Ah. Ah.
• 20:50
[laughs] So, so you guys can reminisce for a few minutes- Let's, let's-... while we just, uh, sit back and, uh- Drink beer... listen and drink beer. Let, let's, let's, let's have a virtual beer together, brother.
• 21:02
Oh, I'm on that right now, dude. I'm living the high life, man. How you doing? I'm drinking, uh, PBR. Thank God I found a Casey's, uh, General Store, uh, in Illinois that sells PBR. Nice.
• 21:16
Yeah, they got PBR everywhere now. Kinda hard to find- No, they don't. No, they don't. They don't, they don't know what PBR is in St. Louis. Well, that's- No. Yeah.... for obvious reasons. It's, uh- Yeah...
• 21:28
I, I think, I think it was the, the Anheuser-Busch people said, "No, there, there's no such thing as PBR." Yeah. I, I'm, I'm almost out, man. I can't... Does that podcast start so that I can keep these guys alive?
• 21:41
So- I thought, I thought PBR stood for Possibly- So-... Busch Beer.
• 21:45
Oh, th- Bu- I can't, I can't drink Busch beer 'cause when I was tripping on acid, I, I, I drank the ashtray which was in a can of Busch Light and I, I just taste ashes every time I have Busch Light now. [laughs] Oh. Oh.
• 22:00
No, but, um, uh, podcast, podcast guys, are, are you aware of the, of the Facebook, uh, page, uh, My Bike Leaning Against Stuff/, uh, yeah you are? [laughs] Yep, we sure are.
• 22:13
[laughs] Be- because I, uh, because I, I, I, I mean, like, every once in a while I, I'm like, "Oh shit, I should've taken a picture of that," but I didn't. But then every once in a while I do. Yeah, you are.
• 22:25
And I'm like, I'm like, man, that, that's a, My Bike Leaning Against Stuff is a, is an awesome little Facebook page and, uh, everybody should know about it. Yeah. Sometimes.
• 22:34
That, that, that actually started as a joke from the other My Bike Leaning Against Stuff, um, and, uh- Dave, uh, Dave, everything, everything you start as a joke. Come on, man. [laughs] Yeah.
• 22:48
That's probably true, but yeah. [laughs] Nice. Ivan wanna say hi? Say hi, Ivan. Ivan. But yeah. Here. We're just, uh, sitting out back at Dino's house just as a lovely dinner and knocking down some beers here. And, um,
• 23:03
Ivan's out here running around, still begging for- Well, I w- I've been, I've been sitting out of this Ca- uh, outside of this Casey's General Store in Greenville, Illinois, just waiting for somebody to run me off, but they're not running me off, so I'm gonna suck up the, as much battery power as I can get.
• 23:18
Nice. [laughs] Yeah. Fucking do it till they tell you to stop. You know? What the hell? Right. Right. Well, you know, and, and- You know, you got a, you got a place, uh, plotted out to camp out in? Yeah, yeah.
• 23:33
They, they got a place, uh, they, they call the fairgrounds. I'm like, "Well, I guess there's no County Fair this year, so I'm gonna go camp out over there." [laughs] Nice. There's gonna be plenty of room for you.
• 23:42
There, there's probably an electrical outlet or something over there, so. Yeah. All right. I thought we missed you last night when you were going through Wisconsin. All right, boys. Dave, Dave's, uh- Right.
• 23:54
Well, we should prob- we, we should probably let, we, we should probably let the podcast guys take back over, huh? Yeah. Well, Dave's- Yeah. We're gonna dump you...
• 23:59
yeah, Dave, Dave's phone isn't really working all that well right now for some reason, so, uh, we're gonna let you guys go and- All right... finish our- 'Cause he's in Caldonia. [laughs] Hey, hey, man. Hold on.
• 24:09
Love you guys. Uh, I'll probably call you next week from Michigan. Sounds good, big sexy. Okay, dude. All right. Later. All right, y'all. Love you guys. Take it easy. Peace. Yeah. Yeah. Dave, I don't know.
• 24:21
Your phone's kinda going... Is that an iPhone? Oh, probably. I'm talking on a new, uh, on my new Bluetooth speaker. Oh. Well, so yeah. Maybe you should get a new one. Yeah, maybe. [laughs] Yep.
• 24:34
The, the less tech- No difference. No worries, guys... the le- Here's the deal, dude. [laughs] The less technology between our technology and you- Hello?... is better. Hello? Hello? Oh, now you're way better. Hello?
• 24:44
Yeah. You gotta just- Dave Shortt... cut, cut out one more- Oh. Can you guys hear me?... one more piece of technology, sir. Thank you. Right on. All right. Talk. Go drink beer. We'll talk to you soon. How's this? Eh.
• 24:57
This work all right? Better than before. A little better. Yeah, for sure. [laughs] All right. Yeah. Well, my, my earpiece on my... I know it's on the iPhone, um, [laughs] - I have an iPhone...
• 25:07
doesn't work all that well, so. I have an iPhone. It's sitting- Yeah... over on my desk. Ugh. All right, man. You got anything you wanna talk about real quick? And then we gotta get rolling here. No, I don't know.
• 25:20
I only wanna fucking... You know, like Jason said, that, that wonderful new [laughs] Facebook site that started as a joke, looking at my bike when you ain't got stuff. I mean, yeah, you are.
• 25:28
[laughs] We'll, we'll find a link- Okay... and put it in the show notes just so everybody can discover it now. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. Beer. I, so like I said- Drink deep. Drink-...
• 25:39
it started as a joke and just ran with it, so. Most things do. And n- and nobody took it over, so- That's how COVID started... whatever.
• 25:49
[laughs] I know there's a way that I can insert myself as being a part- And that's about it. All right, dude. We'll talk. All right. We'll talk to you later.
• 25:56
[laughs] How about that, how about that ride Bill Harsh put on this weekend? That was pretty cool. Oh, yeah. Oh, that's a legitimate con. Nice little fun impromptu ride around Milwaukee, do the beer gardens and back.
• 26:06
Impromptu? He planned it a month in advance, dude. Yep. Yep. Oh, that's right, it wasn't impromptu, but- [laughs] Well, the old Heidelberg- He probably, he probably- Old Heidelberg being, uh-...
• 26:17
when he sent out the invite, I, I, um, I actually thought when he sent out the invites, I, I thought it was that Saturday, but Tina was like, "No, it's July. Um, that's in August." I'm like, "Oh, okay.
• 26:26
What month is it again? I forget." Um- [laughs] So yeah, it was... I thought it was impromptu at first, but yeah, it was a month in advance. All right. Right on, yeah. Give Ivan- But, uh-... some scratching for me.
• 26:39
What's that? Give Ivan some scratching for me. Oh, I will. And Edgar too. He's, he's scared of the grill now, 'cause I like blew it up when I lit it. Uh-oh. [laughs] Cool. Yeah, you'll have that.
• 26:51
It burnt off a little hair, but, you know, the mohawk's still intact. Excellent. [laughs] All right, man. Late- later for you. All right. You go bye now. Hmm. Well- Well, Black is Beautiful Saturday. Sunday.
• 27:05
Yeah, I was gonna do that. Oh, is it Sunday? Oh, even better. Sunday. Sunday. Yeah. Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. Be there, be there, be there. Beginning, um. Yep.
• 27:14
Saturday- Ki- kind of, uh, kind of, uh, confusing sometimes with folks on the tele ringer there. Hmm. People still use those things? I guess. Calling in to the radio program. What number is that again?
• 27:29
[laughs] 717- 72-... 727-... 27. 2453. That spells bike. Bike. And you can join the mayhem- Right?... right here.
• 27:37
So should, you know, should we digress a little bit and talk about, like- I thought that's what we were doing... Sturges? [laughs] Sturges? Should we talk about the, the- No. And is Smash Mouth really a rock band? No.
• 27:48
There we go. That's enough of that discussion. [laughs] Exactly. That was, that was all we needed to do about that. Oh, that band. Yeah.
• 27:56
There's a- That's just peel- We, we- That's just peeling a late '90s scab back- Yep... you know, for me, and it's like, "Oh, my God. Why?" And- "I thought I, I thought I weathered this storm"- After you listen-...
• 28:07
of that band... to this podcast, you should head over to listen to El Rongo- Uh-huh... from the COVID Couch Series. Yeah. That's going on right after you listen to this podcast on Friday. Yeah. That's a thing I- Today.
• 28:18
That's actually a thing I dig. I... That's a thing I dig too, only I- [laughs]... my masks dig more. We need a jingle for the things we dig, uh, section- Things we dig... of the show.
• 28:27
[laughs] These are things that we dig. Do, do-do-do. If you were, uh- Yeah... if you were Paul Shaffer, you could write a, a jingle on the fly. That's right, David. Yeah, for sure. [laughs] Mike's, that's...
• 28:37
So, uh, JK's things we dig is El Rongo. Sounds good. Oh, it's at the Cooperage. That's cool. Yeah. Well, virtually at the Cooperage. Right. But- But it's still there in the- Mm-hmm... in the big space, right? Yeah. Yeah.
• 28:49
And, uh, last night I did the, uh, watch party for, uh, Big Mother gig. We're doing, uh, some outdoor- Were they in Wisconsin, or was- No, in California, I think. Really? Wow. I think it was in California. I don't know.
• 29:03
It, it just popped up when I was, like, looking at it, and I'm like, "Hey, hey, it's a watch party. Why not?" And a good handful of people checked it out. Yes. Yeah, that, some- It sounded good...
• 29:10
some of them live in North Dakota. Yeah, right. Unless he moved. Yeah. I, I... They weren't in Wisconsin. That, that- Our buddy Brady... as far as I know-... drummer extraordinaire... ain't no drum in that one, no.
• 29:22
Hmm, no drum? It was... Nope. It was just two- Oh, then maybe no Brady because- Could be... no drums. Right. Yeah. It was like Los Lobos, but only two of them, so it's Dos Lobos. Gotcha. Nice. Which always was great.
• 29:35
Tony, what's your, uh, things you dig? I- Things you dig... am very excited that
• 29:42
I missed out on the River West 24 face masks during the RW24, but was happy enough to be contacted by a friend of mine who happened to be having a second batch run, and the money gets donated to a very good cause.
• 29:56
Um, we can put a link in the notes. And I happened to purchase us all one for our, uh, for our podcast tonight. We, we may have a photo of said RW24. We will.
• 30:05
And what you'll notice about yours versus mine, as I put mine on... [laughs] What do you notice different? Uh- It's not over your ears. The 24 is on the other side.
• 30:23
[laughs] Oh. That's so when you're doing a selfie it looks the same as ours. There you go. So it's like a mirror. Yep.
• 30:29
But yeah, so I think, and they have a filter liner built into this item, so you can throw a coffee filter or some other sort of protective item. Sure, sure. Um, and you get to represent the People's Holiday. Mm-hmm.
• 30:41
Represent. Well, we're gonna be representing with masks on our face for some time to come, so- Mm-hmm... it's nice to have a selection in the mask drawer. Mm-hmm. Yes. Yes, indeed.
• 30:51
For a guy with glasses, I'd like to suggest that people that make masks include a metal thing that goes around your nose. Yes, so we don't sweat up and steam up our glasses.
• 30:58
That would be a good thing, at least until- Opti-... it starts getting a little cooler out, and then it won't be a big deal at all, but. Opti-Grab. Yeah. Brought to you by Steve Martin.
• 31:06
[laughs] Just thinking about that the other day. [laughs] Can't wait to watch The Jerk again. Oh, shit, I might watch that when I get home. Such a great movie. I got, I got two, uh, two Bill Ho's
• 31:16
egg rolls waiting for me. Oh. Oh, they arrived as I was leaving. I'm like, "Oh, oh." [laughs] I- They're back in business- Okay... as a matter of fact. Well, that's good. So, yeah.
• 31:27
I was jonesing for their egg rolls for a couple goddamn months. You know, our friend Kimberly Pratt used to rent from Bill Ho. Was that when he had the lobster on top of his- Yes, it was... his SUV? [laughs] His BMW X5.
• 31:39
Well, that- [laughs] I think that was the- Was the lobster on the X5, or was that on the Mercedes? 'Cause he did that loophole- Oh... where you could write it off in two years. That's why he had those three SUVs.
• 31:48
That just was killing me. That was killing me. Well, works for me. Yeah. He had a, yeah, he had a lobster on one. He had different- Yeah... things on the top of each one of his big SUVs.
• 31:55
'Cause there was one that was always, I, when I lived over, um, kinda by Vatucci's area, I'd always see it right in that area. And I'm just like, "Why are you da, da, da, da, da?" You know?
• 32:09
Well- It was like he parked down the street and then went to, uh, Hop Shang [laughs] or something like that. Be like, "I gotta test out the competition," you know? Mm-hmm.
• 32:17
So here's something for both, uh, JK and Tony, since- Sorry, that was a Chinese food wormhole [laughs] Send to Swonko [laughs] This is a bike-related thing now. [laughs] Not lobster or BMW-related.
• 32:28
[laughs] Uh, well, JK still theoretically works on campus. Ah. Tony worked on campus. I did.
• 32:34
Uh, a, a guy sent a note into the shop at, says, "My son's going to be attending UW Milwaukee this fall for his freshman year of college." Hmm. This was just recently, too, so apparently- He's still coming...
• 32:44
that's somehow happening. Yeah. He wants to bring a bike to campus, and we talked about bike security around campus and storage. He wanted to g- get some insight on the bicycling around the UW area.
• 32:54
I said, "Bicycling is great. I mean, you can, there's paths, there's bike lanes." Absolutely. "There's all sorts of ways to get around on a bike."
• 32:59
What I wasn't as sure of is if you can store your bike in dorms or not, or do you just lock them up outside? And obviously, campuses are rife with thievery. I believe that you are not allowed to bring...
• 33:10
I don't know this for sure. I, I don't think you can bring them inside. You'd have to call campus police, but I don't believe you can bring them inside. I don't think the dorms- JK... yeah. Right. No.
• 33:17
But I- I, I don't think so No way... but I will bestow my rule of thumb on bike locking on campus, and that is just park next to a bike that's easier to steal than yours. [laughs] Get, get a better lock than that guy.
• 33:32
Right. The thief will always take the easiest way out. So you get yourself a better lock than the person you're locking next to, maybe a couple of people, you're probably okay.
• 33:43
I suggested also that he get non-quick release wheels. Also a great idea. Yep, yep. Carry a pocket tool.
• 33:50
They're cheap, they're readily available, and have some skewers that you can take off fairly quickly, but not in seconds. Yeah. Yeah. Especially if it's gonna be parked out overnight. Yeah.
• 34:01
Every, yeah, and if he has to be in- Oh... yeah, in the dorms- And let's just keep this going with-... and out there... don't park on the south side of the union, because that's where all the bikes get stolen first.
• 34:13
[laughs] Park either under the library, where there is, first of all, it's covered, so you're protected. Yep, yep. And there's always foot traffic. Oh, for sure.
• 34:23
That side of the union, I, every time I go to campus, there's at least one bike missing at least one wheel. Yep. And by at least, there's usually [laughs] missing both, so don't do that.
• 34:34
Well, and I don't know where- In normal days, I'd say on the north, the top Speights Ch- uh, Plaza part of the union- Yeah, better, better...
• 34:43
probably would be, be fine, but I mean, the, the union's not gonna be the union this academic year. Right, right, 'cause there's gonna be no one there. So there's not gonna be that traffic- Library... as such.
• 34:51
Yeah, library's always the- Plenty of parking under the library. Yeah. It's, it's covered. It's nice. Yeah, I wasn't sure- Yeah... what some of the newer dorms had, whether they had underground- They could...
• 35:01
'cause they have car parking underground. They, that I don't know about. Yeah. You're right. The, the- They really could... the off-campus dorms might have a better- Right... way to store your bike. Anyway.
• 35:08
Or, or lock it up outside. I mean, the, uh, the cop shop is in the, uh, west tower. Yep. So just park it- Also, also a good place... you can just park it right outside the p- campus police, and you should be fine.
• 35:18
'Cause one would hope that there's cameras there, but- Yeah... you never know. One would, one would think, hope, and mm. So there, there you, there you go, Rob. But as an employee, I, I don't know.
• 35:27
And Rob, thanks for letting your kid go to UW Milwaukee. Yeah. It's a fine institution. Well, oh, Mr. Goodman was talking about how if they didn't get on-campus people, that UWM would be in trouble. It's very true.
• 35:39
Versus some of the other schools in the UW system, which would not be as impacted as much. My wife's department is not allowing full-time staff back in yet, and may not this whole entire semester. Yep.
• 35:49
Oddly enough, they let the students work, but like, all right, that's a weird- Yeah. Well, you know- I have to s-... young, young people don't get COVID, so- Yeah, I know... apparently. Yeah.
• 35:57
I have to submit the work, the work plan. And orange is the new tan. That's for sure. So it's kind of like 15% of time on campus I'm forecasting for myself and coworker for the semester, which is- Yeah. That's-...
• 36:14
whatever. That's like six hou-... pretty casual... yeah, six hours in the course of a week if I have to do some shit, which I end up having to do anyways. Right. But so much of it can be done remotely. Right.
• 36:23
And every, all the classes are going, at least most of them, in some way or fashion online, and the face-to-faces have to have an online component, because only half the class can attend at a time. Right.
• 36:37
So, you know- Yeah... it's, it's, it's oh, shit, I thought I was done with work, and now I'm back. [laughs] All right. Well- I'll be ready tomorrow, then. Thanks for- Oh, wait, no. I mean on Monday. On Monday.
• 36:49
There we go. Yeah, there you go. I think we wasted enough of these good folks' time. Yeah. Are you sure? Probably. We got more stuff to talk about next week now. Just one, one- Yeah, yeah...
• 36:56
last final note, though, is Simico's not an e-bike. Sanos? Simico. Oh. Not an e-bike.
• 37:05
  [upbeat music]
