- 0:07Speaker 1: So we're a good thing today, sitting down here with
- 0:09Speaker 1: Teddy from yours truly. Hello, Hello, how's everything going today?
- 0:13Speaker 1: You must be stoked it's not forty degrees and then Sidney.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, very happy. It's not quite as hot as yesterday.
- 0:19Speaker 3: I do prefer the Queensland heat over the heat anywhere
- 0:24Speaker 3: else in the world. It's nice and sweaty, so you
- 0:26Speaker 3: get a cool breeze on you and you're cool again. Also,
- 0:30Speaker 3: I just I love Queensland. That's where I'm born, so
- 0:33Speaker 3: there's no reason I could ever hate it.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Queensland, Queenslander, Queenslander. Now I've got to ask the question
- 0:40Speaker 1: in the answer of the government.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Are you a theater or no?
- 0:43Speaker 1: My gosh, are you a Teddy?
- 0:45Speaker 2: No?
- 0:46Speaker 4: Do how are you?
- 0:47Speaker 3: What? Are you.
- 0:50Speaker 2: The baty? Whether to tell you no, I keep your secret.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I am I'm an Edward.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yeah, well so here my family and friends from when
- 1:03Speaker 3: I was younger, they still call me Eddie.
- 1:06Speaker 2: If anyone else calls me that, now you're dead to me.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I taken.
- 1:11Speaker 3: But yeah, it kind of started when I was like
- 1:14Speaker 3: like thirteen or something. I think someone just called me
- 1:17Speaker 3: that and then it's stuck and I just preferred it,
- 1:21Speaker 3: I guess, and yeah, now it's taken it and run
- 1:24Speaker 3: with it. So if you met me pre that, it's
- 1:27Speaker 3: absolutely fine. But anything after that, it's like, that is amazing.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I was sitting there this morning and I'm like, surely
- 1:33Speaker 1: he's not a Theatore.
- 1:34Speaker 2: No, well, I'm glad at us.
- 1:36Speaker 1: But we won't mention your real name.
- 1:37Speaker 2: That's fine. No, I don't have a lame, boring name.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I am named after a key.
- 1:42Speaker 1: You could still be king if you wanted to be,
- 1:44Speaker 1: just so you know. Okay, So last time we spoke
- 1:47Speaker 1: was right before you released Toxic. Yeah, so you haven't
- 1:51Speaker 1: slowed down since then. You've been on the go and
- 1:53Speaker 1: pretty much gone four pout. Do you get time to
- 1:55Speaker 1: spend with the family of Christmas.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got a little bit of time.
- 1:58Speaker 3: We're back down Melbourne supporting Thornhill at their Christmas show.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I am so excited for I love those guys.
- 2:06Speaker 3: They're the best to hang with and it's just aways
- 2:08Speaker 3: some to play with them any time as we get.
- 2:11Speaker 2: But yeah, I got some.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Time at Christmas, which is gonna be nice. Ye, spend
- 2:16Speaker 3: some time with the family and my partner and the dogs.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Yeah, the dog I've missed you too.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I've missed them so much.
- 2:23Speaker 3: I haven't seen him for like five days.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Killer and they look at you when you leave and you're, oh, no, buddy.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:31Speaker 2: It's honestly probably the hardest thing in the world. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:34Speaker 2: I can go. I'm sorry. I feel you.
- 2:38Speaker 4: I have kids as well, so they're kind of like pets.
- 2:41Speaker 2: So I love the comparison the other way around.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Your lyrics often explore vulnerability and personal growth.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Has performing those songs live.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Especially at festivals, change your relationship to them.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Over time, Yes, and no, some songs more than others,
- 3:04Speaker 4: like especially as you, because like I know, we kind
- 3:09Speaker 4: of use the studio to really get out a lot
- 3:11Speaker 4: of our.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Feelings and emotions. That almost almost like a therapy session
- 3:14Speaker 2: in some ways.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah, So it's kind of nice to, like, especially after
- 3:20Speaker 3: turing a song for a year that it's like was
- 3:23Speaker 3: talking about, like a really hectic time in your life,
- 3:25Speaker 3: and then seeing how much you've grown and moved on
- 3:27Speaker 3: from there and.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Like still singing those same words.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah, it's definitely it's cool to look back at and
- 3:34Speaker 3: cool to see your own personal growth in that way,
- 3:37Speaker 3: which is Yeah.
- 3:38Speaker 2: It's it's always nice, but then there are.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Some songs that are hard to sing the further away
- 3:44Speaker 3: you get from them, because it's like it can be
- 3:46Speaker 3: a little bit of a reminder of some hectic stuff.
- 3:48Speaker 3: But yeah, at the same time, it is very cathartic
- 3:51Speaker 3: to let that out on stage and just like it
- 3:55Speaker 3: almost gives you a little bit of a boost sometimes.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Yeah, And just like seeing the way that people relate
- 4:00Speaker 3: to it is like it's sad, but it's nice because
- 4:03Speaker 3: it's like you obviously you don't want people to go
- 4:05Speaker 3: through similar things, but it's just nice to know that
- 4:08Speaker 3: there are people out.
- 4:09Speaker 2: There that understand and like we're able.
- 4:11Speaker 3: To give them some kind of recrief for whatever emotional
- 4:15Speaker 3: termol I've been going through. Yeah, definitely, you've really reached
- 4:18Speaker 3: them and it's like you know, we've been there and
- 4:21Speaker 3: you're there with them.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, And like that's the thing, Like I grew
- 4:25Speaker 2: up like that.
- 4:26Speaker 3: I was a kid that was crying to the songs,
- 4:29Speaker 3: the sad songs, going to the shows, bowling my eyes
- 4:32Speaker 3: out when they're singing it as like we've all been there,
- 4:35Speaker 3: and it's just nice to know that, like we're able
- 4:37Speaker 3: to do that for other people, like, it's honestly the
- 4:39Speaker 3: coolest thing in the world.
- 4:40Speaker 4: That's lovely, And is there any bands on the lineup
- 4:44Speaker 4: that you're really vibing with that you have just discovered.
- 4:49Speaker 3: I haven't really just discovered South Arkay, but they are
- 4:53Speaker 3: the Goats.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I love that band so much. We toured with them.
- 4:56Speaker 3: We took them out on a tour in the UK
- 4:59Speaker 3: twenty when he's three.
- 5:01Speaker 2: That could be wrong.
- 5:02Speaker 3: I'm really bad with dates and names, but yeah, they're awesome.
- 5:07Speaker 3: I love them in every sense of the way, Like
- 5:11Speaker 3: they're the coolest people ever, and they've really blown up
- 5:14Speaker 3: and they're still super down to still the same people
- 5:16Speaker 3: that we met with, like when we just met a couple.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Of years ago, which is just so cool. But I'm
- 5:21Speaker 2: really keen to see gooblack on and Weezer.
- 5:24Speaker 3: They're like, they're the two main bands that I need
- 5:28Speaker 3: to go see. So I've never seen both of those bands.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Every time Google I have been in town, I've been
- 5:34Speaker 3: doing something which has been really hard and just never
- 5:37Speaker 3: had a chance to see Wheezer.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Yeah, Kobla is like current's favorite band, just quietly nice gos.
- 5:46Speaker 1: So your sound has changed and morphed over the years
- 5:48Speaker 1: as you guys have grown together. Is it exciting in
- 5:50Speaker 1: the writing phase when you kind of come out with
- 5:52Speaker 1: the new sound or trying something out and you're like,
- 5:54Speaker 1: what do you reckon? Is that one of your favorite parts?
- 5:57Speaker 3: Oh? Yeah, one hundred percent, especially like with guitar stuff,
- 6:01Speaker 3: Like I'm a bit.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Of a nerd with it.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I am like a tech full time outside of the band,
- 6:06Speaker 3: So very nerdy with that stuff. So any time I
- 6:09Speaker 3: find a new piece of gear or just like even
- 6:12Speaker 3: with what I've got, just tweaking and like changing around
- 6:16Speaker 3: the signal chain of stuff to make cooler sounds and
- 6:19Speaker 3: just like showing it's like, hey what about this?
- 6:21Speaker 2: And then like the panda whoa, how do do it?
- 6:25Speaker 2: I love?
- 6:25Speaker 3: I love that kind of stuff, and it's like and
- 6:27Speaker 3: it's sometimes it's just something you don't really notice, but
- 6:31Speaker 3: it's just like those little things that kind of add
- 6:34Speaker 3: together and fill all those gaps in the big master
- 6:38Speaker 3: puzzle of the whole album.
- 6:40Speaker 2: I guess absolutely. Are you a pedal board guy? Do
- 6:42Speaker 2: you geek out over that?
- 6:44Speaker 3: Yeah? I haven't run a pedal board for a little while,
- 6:47Speaker 3: but like if I have the chance, I kind of
- 6:50Speaker 3: like I'll take it.
- 6:52Speaker 2: I still have one at home that I use, still
- 6:54Speaker 2: a pedal nerd.
- 6:57Speaker 3: But yeah, I'm on the cord cortext moment, which ILD
- 7:00Speaker 3: love still. I've captured all my pedals onto it, and
- 7:04Speaker 3: I still like I'm able to play with that. So
- 7:05Speaker 3: it's like digital pedal board, which is awesome. Now running
- 7:09Speaker 3: that through cabs on stage, I'll get that big wall
- 7:12Speaker 3: of sound running through me. I just love being able
- 7:15Speaker 3: to feel like I just love being on stage, being
- 7:18Speaker 3: able to feel under your feet and I feel like
- 7:19Speaker 3: you're listening to the music through your whole entire body,
- 7:22Speaker 3: just not through your headphones. Like that's that's the thing
- 7:26Speaker 3: for me. I was like, I want to hear it
- 7:28Speaker 3: with every every fiber of my body.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, real music. Is that what made you want
- 7:33Speaker 1: to bust out the macarena on stage today? Or what's
- 7:35Speaker 1: going on there?
- 7:36Speaker 2: Just taking the piss?
- 7:40Speaker 3: I did it at practice one time because I made
- 7:43Speaker 3: that intro and then we'll just playing it a practice.
- 7:47Speaker 3: And I was just like, you know what, because I
- 7:50Speaker 3: have been known to bust out the macarena because you
- 7:52Speaker 3: didn't do it to any song, and I've even tried
- 7:56Speaker 3: it with doing in songs in different times signatures, because
- 7:59Speaker 3: you can still make it work, and you just got
- 8:01Speaker 3: to wait for the right if you know polarrhythms and
- 8:05Speaker 3: how like all of that stuff works, and you can
- 8:07Speaker 3: you can figure out if made it wait, make work
- 8:10Speaker 3: around so you can do the macarena to any song
- 8:12Speaker 3: you like. So I just started doing it to that
- 8:15Speaker 3: and I was like, fuck it, I'm gonna do this
- 8:16Speaker 3: all the time.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Now it's cringe, but you know, I like it.
- 8:20Speaker 1: That's all can hold down a beat ken fucking macarna too.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, it was just great to side.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I'm just going for it.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah, like why not.
- 8:33Speaker 1: So you guys are celebrating ten years coming up? What
- 8:37Speaker 1: you must be really soon?
- 8:38Speaker 3: Actually yeah, it's a it's kind of a gray area
- 8:42Speaker 3: of where we really started.
- 8:44Speaker 2: So we're gonna say.
- 8:48Speaker 3: It's second half of this year, first half and next
- 8:50Speaker 3: year is really like the whole ten years.
- 8:53Speaker 2: It's it's at some point between here and then, so
- 8:56Speaker 2: they will.
- 8:58Speaker 3: I've been talking to the guys about doing something special
- 9:00Speaker 3: for it, so definitely started planning something to do something
- 9:04Speaker 3: special for.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Ten years of being a band together.
- 9:06Speaker 3: But the thing that we've already started looking and planning
- 9:10Speaker 3: is ten years after Glowy Be, because that's the one
- 9:13Speaker 3: that really changed everything from us.
- 9:15Speaker 2: It's not for a couple of.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Years, but we definitely want to get ahead of that
- 9:19Speaker 3: and make sure that we've got to spend a lot
- 9:20Speaker 3: of time and energy to make out something really special
- 9:22Speaker 3: because like that was really where this all started for us.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean ten years is huge, and especially in
- 9:28Speaker 1: this climate, let's be able to sustain it for that long.
- 9:31Speaker 1: It's just massive. So yeah, absolutely, what would you say
- 9:36Speaker 1: the key to a healthy working relationship is like what
- 9:38Speaker 1: advice would you give a band starting out and navigating that.
- 9:44Speaker 2: It's the same as any relationship that you have.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Compromise is always a big thing, as well as just
- 9:52Speaker 3: being there for each other. Like it's really hard being
- 9:55Speaker 3: on the road sometimes and understanding other people emotions and
- 10:01Speaker 3: like knowing when people are tired and hungry and it's
- 10:04Speaker 3: like they don't necessarily.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Like things will happen and it's.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Like comes across the wrong way, and just understanding what
- 10:12Speaker 3: the people around you I really like and it's like
- 10:14Speaker 3: it's never anything personal. It's just at the end of
- 10:18Speaker 3: the day, I'm tired and grumpy. Sorry, I like I
- 10:21Speaker 3: yelled about the food. Yeah, but and we know each
- 10:26Speaker 3: other and they know they know, like and just tired
- 10:28Speaker 3: and grumpy and that's all it is. And just having
- 10:32Speaker 3: one hundred percent support for the people that you're with.
- 10:35Speaker 3: I think the moment that you lose, even lose one
- 10:39Speaker 3: hundred percent of that support for each other, that's when
- 10:41Speaker 3: things can go pair shaped.
- 10:43Speaker 2: So it's just really.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Having each other's backs and like, yeah, just having each
- 10:47Speaker 3: other's back is the number one thing. Yeah.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Ye, it is a relationship that need'st been nurtured in.
- 10:53Speaker 3: The long run.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah, one hundred percent. Like you've got to really take
- 10:56Speaker 2: care of it, and you've got to put in the effort.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Like it doesn't how easy. You have to really try.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:03Speaker 2: But nothing good that's the same. Yeah, nothing good ever
- 11:08Speaker 2: comes easy. Yeah, I'm glad you had that. What's the
- 11:13Speaker 2: biggest thing you've unlearned or outgrown? Creativity?
- 11:17Speaker 3: Creatively?
- 11:23Speaker 2: Not the memory of being ship? I don't know, No,
- 11:26Speaker 2: I don't know. Yeah, I unlearned how to be shipped.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I'm still still really bad at guitars. No, uh though
- 11:40Speaker 3: the one is like kind of like when you're making
- 11:42Speaker 3: a mistake on stage and you gotta just say it happens,
- 11:46Speaker 3: you're a human, but when you make a deal about it,
- 11:49Speaker 3: everyone knows.
- 11:50Speaker 2: But if you learn.
- 11:52Speaker 3: How to just move on from it and just keep
- 11:54Speaker 3: going like nothing happens, ninety percent of the time, no
- 11:56Speaker 3: one notices.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Because I'll say it to someone.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I was like, oh, man, I like it a note
- 12:00Speaker 3: in this solo somewhere. It was like, dude, I couldn't
- 12:02Speaker 3: tell because he was just like locked in.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I was like, that's it.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:06Speaker 1: That's why I asked artists all the time if they
- 12:08Speaker 1: stuff up and they're like yeah, and I'm like, I
- 12:10Speaker 1: never have a clue.
- 12:11Speaker 2: You just hired it, so well.
- 12:13Speaker 3: That's one thing I encourage is like, especially for like
- 12:17Speaker 3: younger bands starting out or any band starting out or
- 12:20Speaker 3: any level, is make mistakes and learn from them. That's
- 12:24Speaker 3: That's like, that is the number one way to grow
- 12:27Speaker 3: in in any field really, but especially being in a
- 12:31Speaker 3: mand is like, it's okay to make a mistake, but
- 12:34Speaker 3: it's how you move on from that and how you
- 12:36Speaker 3: that's it. How you deal with those mistakes that really
- 12:39Speaker 3: defines who you ucas Like God, we have made a
- 12:42Speaker 3: lot of bad decisions and a lot of mistakes, but
- 12:45Speaker 3: we know how to make up for them and republic
- 12:47Speaker 3: from them, and yeah that's yeah, that's you said exactly.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Well, we better wrap this up. Thank you so much, Teddy.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to celebrating your ten years together. It's
- 12:58Speaker 1: a huge fee and you know, boys have a soft
- 13:00Speaker 1: spot for you guys. In my first ever interview as well,
- 13:02Speaker 1: so I realized, Yeah, Michayla, she was very kind to me,
- 13:06Speaker 1: so I always TopWare.
- 13:08Speaker 2: She's yeah, she's absolutely gorgeous.
- 13:10Speaker 1: So yeah, thank you so much for your time.
- 13:12Speaker 2: It's been a pleasure than today.
