- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes with Kyle Gibson and Lancelin. Hey, before we
- 0:15Speaker 1: get started, I did want to point out that since
- 0:17Speaker 1: we started doing this, we've added two thousand subscribers. However,
- 0:23Speaker 1: we're still looking to get more. We'd like to get
- 0:26Speaker 1: to the seven thousand mark. So if you like Cardinal Territory,
- 0:30Speaker 1: who doesn't love Cardinal Territory, hit that subscribe button. We're pushing.
- 0:35Speaker 1: We're pushing towards seven k help us get it, okay,
- 0:39Speaker 1: So just a little background. Before we started this presentation,
- 0:43Speaker 1: Kyle Gibson was in his shop in the middle of
- 0:47Speaker 1: a torrential downpour, had a tin roof and it was
- 0:51Speaker 1: very loud. So I politely asked Kyle Gibson if he
- 0:54Speaker 1: could get to where it was quieter, and he ran
- 0:57Speaker 1: to his car. And he's a hero because he got
- 1:01Speaker 1: soaked as he got into a car. And now his
- 1:04Speaker 1: internet signal isn't that great, but he's here. So Lance,
- 1:08Speaker 1: let's give Kyle a run of a plug please, because Tew,
- 1:13Speaker 1: you look angry. You do look a little angry.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I know exactly what's gonna happen. Here right this is
- 1:21Speaker 2: the old call into the manager's office. Hey, you know
- 1:24Speaker 2: what you've been throwing really good. You've been doing everything
- 1:28Speaker 2: we've asked you to do, but the numbers game just
- 1:31Speaker 2: doesn't work, and we've got to release you.
- 1:35Speaker 3: I've been in that meeting.
- 1:36Speaker 2: It stinks, and I know that's going to happen at
- 1:38Speaker 2: some point today because right now it's just not lining
- 1:41Speaker 2: up for me with the rain, the bad signal. You
- 1:45Speaker 2: had me run through the rain to get better signal
- 1:47Speaker 2: and it didn't work. So the fact I'm surprised I'm
- 1:50Speaker 2: still even on this show right now, I can't believe
- 1:52Speaker 2: you didn't cut me off in the middle of it.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Well, because I wanted to frame the heroic action of
- 1:59Speaker 1: you running through the downpour. Plus you look wet, you
- 2:02Speaker 1: look so you look angry. I thought might as well
- 2:05Speaker 1: put them on. Don't you think that was the right time.
- 2:09Speaker 4: And there's been a big, big, big thing about taking
- 2:12Speaker 4: your shirt off, so which figured you just get a
- 2:14Speaker 4: wet shirt, you can take it off. You'd be a
- 2:16Speaker 4: part of the part of the crew that was at
- 2:17Speaker 4: the games this weekend. Let us know it's too well,
- 2:21Speaker 4: you don't want to doesn't want to show off.
- 2:26Speaker 3: You don't want to show off the Cereal Bowl. Take
- 2:30Speaker 3: the shirt off. Back to the body. You had me
- 2:33Speaker 3: run through prential downpour. I'm sitting in a car. I'm
- 2:36Speaker 3: not in a changing room.
- 2:39Speaker 5: Jim.
- 2:39Speaker 1: It's still I still think you should do it. If
- 2:43Speaker 1: if people need to be caught up on this. We
- 2:46Speaker 1: had a big weekend in Saint Louis. The Royals were
- 2:48Speaker 1: in town. Cards took to a three and Friday night
- 2:52Speaker 1: there was a club team from Steven F. Austin in
- 2:56Speaker 1: town for the Division two up Baseball World Series. They
- 3:02Speaker 1: came to the Cardinals game, and let's face it, the
- 3:05Speaker 1: Cardinals have been drawn as well as they were hoping,
- 3:08Speaker 1: playing good baseball. The crowds are getting better and better.
- 3:11Speaker 5: But this Steven F.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Austin team didn't just show up. They showed up. They
- 3:16Speaker 1: took their shirts off, they flung them around over their head,
- 3:20Speaker 1: and they fired up the crowd. Now that's not where
- 3:24Speaker 1: it ended, because the Tarps Off Crew, as they called themselves,
- 3:28Speaker 1: created not just twenty guys. Then it was one hundred
- 3:33Speaker 1: kids with their shirts off. Then it was a thousand
- 3:36Speaker 1: and literally thousands and Oli Marmo. After that Friday night
- 3:39Speaker 1: game said, he hopes that those guys come back for
- 3:44Speaker 1: every game because they fired up the crowd. Then once
- 3:46Speaker 1: all the information came in, the Cardinals invited them back.
- 3:50Speaker 1: They came Saturday. Did it the end? They were crazy
- 3:52Speaker 1: shirts off. Ollie invited them in the clubhouse where they
- 3:56Speaker 1: took their shirts off. Some of the Cardinal players took
- 3:59Speaker 1: their shirts off. Ali Marmel did not take his shirt off,
- 4:02Speaker 1: but they got to meet the players. It was a
- 4:04Speaker 1: whole thing. So my question is, gentlemen, this sort of
- 4:09Speaker 1: happened organically. It wasn't set up or anything. But isn't
- 4:14Speaker 1: this the kind of thing that sometimes Kyle can be
- 4:16Speaker 1: a jumping off point for a team when something catches
- 4:19Speaker 1: fire like that. Mason Wins said it was the two
- 4:23Speaker 1: most fun games he's ever been part of, the two
- 4:26Speaker 1: that this tarps off crew showed up. Can't that be
- 4:29Speaker 1: a jumping off point for a ball club?
- 4:33Speaker 3: Yeah? I think it could be.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I mean, I think they've played really well this year,
- 4:38Speaker 2: so I mean, I don't necessarily think they need, you know,
- 4:41Speaker 2: a jumping off point, but I think it could be
- 4:43Speaker 2: something that leaks into celebrations, leaks into something they do
- 4:47Speaker 2: on the on the field. At some point to pay
- 4:50Speaker 2: homage to the people that started it.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Well, that's one of your thoughts. When you see literally
- 4:56Speaker 1: thousands of young men with their shirts off in support
- 5:01Speaker 1: for the home team.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I think you're looking at more of us. Yeah, that.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Was such an old man question that where's his socks?
- 5:12Speaker 4: Like mid Calf too? You know what I'm saying, Khakis
- 5:15Speaker 4: mid sat mid Calf.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Light off the first one after that question.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say this is more of a rallying
- 5:25Speaker 4: for the fans. I think you're gonna start maybe seeing
- 5:28Speaker 4: a different type of atmosphere at Bush because of how
- 5:32Speaker 4: it kind of agdn as the weekend went, and could
- 5:35Speaker 4: be fun and could bring a different element to Bush game.
- 5:38Speaker 4: I mean, we've all played in different ballparks that have
- 5:40Speaker 4: different little skits in there in there in the in
- 5:42Speaker 4: the stands. Oakland comes to mind when they're out there
- 5:45Speaker 4: banging on the drums and doing their stuff like that.
- 5:48Speaker 4: So you know, maybe tarps off is the new rallying
- 5:51Speaker 4: cry for the Cardinals fans when they're trying to get
- 5:53Speaker 4: a rally going or something like that. So it brings
- 5:56Speaker 4: a different element to the ballpark. It's about to be
- 5:58Speaker 4: summer break, kids, are gonna be out of school this week.
- 6:01Speaker 4: You know, maybe that's just something for the you know,
- 6:03Speaker 4: catching some catching some free sun free violumin d with
- 6:07Speaker 4: your tarpsh off at the at the stadium the summer.
- 6:11Speaker 1: So for the record, Kyle and Lance, I'm a reporter,
- 6:15Speaker 1: regional cable journalism done at a very high level.
- 6:18Speaker 5: I report.
- 6:19Speaker 1: I don't become the story. Therefore my shirt stayed on.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Now I do want to tell you this too. Listen,
- 6:30Speaker 1: if I if I took my shirt off, there would
- 6:32Speaker 1: be suddenly a ton of reports of a bigfoot sighting. Okay,
- 6:38Speaker 1: I look like a sasquatch. I'm not doing it.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Now.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Let's see if we could guarantee to get to seven
- 6:42Speaker 2: thousand subscribers if you took your shirt off. I think
- 6:45Speaker 2: I think we're going to do it.
- 6:47Speaker 5: You got all right, I'll mak it.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Jim's doen a lot less for a lot less.
- 6:52Speaker 5: I promise you that.
- 6:54Speaker 1: If we suddenly have seven thousand, I don't know what
- 6:58Speaker 1: that meant, but I'll roll with it. If we get
- 7:01Speaker 1: to seven thousand, right, I'm talking about by the next show,
- 7:05Speaker 1: the one after next time we're all together, I will
- 7:09Speaker 1: I will take the shirt off if we get to
- 7:11Speaker 1: seven thousand now on Saturday. On Saturday, I'll do it
- 7:15Speaker 1: because look, we're all on the same team. We all
- 7:18Speaker 1: have a role to play. On Saturday, we're waiting for
- 7:22Speaker 1: the Steven F. Austin Crew Club baseball team to show up,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and everyone's kind of what if these guys had a
- 7:29Speaker 1: game in the morning. They said they were coming, and
- 7:32Speaker 1: everyone was waiting for them to show off. So I
- 7:34Speaker 1: do a hit during the game. Okay, I'm out here
- 7:37Speaker 1: with these guys waiting for them. They're not here yet,
- 7:40Speaker 1: but there's some other young kids. And as I threw
- 7:43Speaker 1: it back the chip, I said to the like ten
- 7:45Speaker 1: young people around me, Hey, if you guys want to
- 7:48Speaker 1: get it started and take the shirts off and get
- 7:51Speaker 1: the crowd going. And I'm not kidding you, Like, within
- 7:55Speaker 1: ten seconds there was one hundred guys waving their shirts
- 7:58Speaker 1: over their head and the loud it was so loud. Anyway,
- 8:03Speaker 1: as I'm done with the hit and I'm going back
- 8:06Speaker 1: to another area in the stadium, an older gentleman older
- 8:10Speaker 1: than me came up to me and said, I was
- 8:12Speaker 1: just trying to watch the game. You started this. He
- 8:15Speaker 1: started yelling at me. So as a regional cable journalist.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Sometimes you're going to be the focal point of playing,
- 8:21Speaker 1: but you can't please everyone. Kyle, loudest stadium you ever
- 8:26Speaker 1: played in, the loudest crowd. I'm talking about individual game
- 8:29Speaker 1: that you were ever in where the crowd was noticeable
- 8:33Speaker 1: and impactful.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Philly in October twenty twenty two.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Not close, Not close. I mean we're talking when when
- 8:45Speaker 2: Hoskins and Harper in the colin nearby had Rick Gale readings,
- 8:56Speaker 2: So Philly, you know what.
- 8:59Speaker 3: I'm out of here. I'm done. I'm gone. You know
- 9:02Speaker 3: what that's messed up? The ring stop? The rain stop?
- 9:07Speaker 3: You guys know what? You wait for.
- 9:11Speaker 5: A reason?
- 9:13Speaker 3: DFA, Oh he's back. He won't go. He won't go
- 9:16Speaker 3: without a fight.
- 9:17Speaker 5: What you got?
- 9:17Speaker 2: You guys been looking for a reason.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Kick me out of here all day. So I'm out
- 9:21Speaker 3: of here, you know what.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I'm going back into the shed where I don't have
- 9:24Speaker 2: to hear this stuff and to me. In the meantime,
- 9:27Speaker 2: I'm gonna go create a thousand emails and create some
- 9:30Speaker 2: YouTube accounts, and I'm gonna get a subscribers. And then
- 9:33Speaker 2: we got Jim with his carp off on Thursday.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Can't wait?
- 9:37Speaker 2: You guys can go the rest of your show before
- 9:40Speaker 2: you d f A.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Hey, I've done this too. Before you DFA me, I'm
- 9:43Speaker 3: opting out of this show.
- 9:44Speaker 2: You got it?
- 9:49Speaker 5: He does not like to.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Apparently he's had uh interaction with the df A before.
- 9:54Speaker 5: It's never fun. That was half df still.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Fresh, it's still fresh from last year.
- 9:59Speaker 1: What's the the loudest crowd you ever played in front of.
- 10:04Speaker 3: I've had a.
- 10:04Speaker 4: Couple, but the one that makes the most sense that
- 10:07Speaker 4: will resonate with Cardinals fans is twenty eleven in the
- 10:10Speaker 4: World Series in Texas when we couldn't even hear people's
- 10:14Speaker 4: people talking on bullpen phones.
- 10:16Speaker 3: So I would say that's the one that will go
- 10:19Speaker 3: with today.
- 10:20Speaker 4: I've played in some good ones with whether it's playoffs
- 10:22Speaker 4: in New York when you're you know, heck, World Series
- 10:25Speaker 4: in Boston and thirteen was loud. So there's some good
- 10:28Speaker 4: ones out there. But the one where I actually like
- 10:32Speaker 4: where it caused problems. Now, who knows what were the
- 10:37Speaker 4: real reasons for those problems. There's been so many stories
- 10:39Speaker 4: over the years, but the twenty eleven in Texas, we'll
- 10:43Speaker 4: go with that one.
- 10:45Speaker 5: Well, the crowd was loud.
- 10:47Speaker 1: There's no question, And I guess we're leaving his his
- 10:50Speaker 1: slot up there as an homage to Kindle Gibson for
- 10:54Speaker 1: walking in the rain. It but that really wasn't the
- 10:57Speaker 1: reason for the misunderstanding the bullpen. Let's be honest about that.
- 11:02Speaker 5: It wasn't. Which may have been loud, but let's be honest. Lance.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say that that wasn't the reason for
- 11:10Speaker 4: the for the mishap. So uh, you know, I always
- 11:14Speaker 4: get everyone's always asked like what happened? I remember Derek
- 11:17Speaker 4: Lucas always telling me he goes. They said, he said,
- 11:22Speaker 4: Mott or Lynn he goes. I know what I heard.
- 11:25Speaker 4: They're not easy to get confused. I was I did
- 11:28Speaker 4: I got up? Who I thought I was supposed to
- 11:30Speaker 4: get up? Or who I was told to get up?
- 11:32Speaker 4: So I think that you're looking at a time and
- 11:34Speaker 4: the thing or during that time that was my spot.
- 11:37Speaker 3: I got up every game, I think that they got up.
- 11:41Speaker 4: And then once I started getting loose, they realized and
- 11:43Speaker 4: once I came in, they realized I had thrown what
- 11:45Speaker 4: almost sixty pitches of the night before and multiple winnings
- 11:48Speaker 4: of work and realized, oh, this might not be a
- 11:50Speaker 4: good idea, and then they got met up quick and
- 11:52Speaker 4: then so I think that's kind of more what happened
- 11:56Speaker 4: than maybe not being able to hear over the bullpen
- 11:57Speaker 4: phone or the crowd.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Can I ask you to repeat this again? I probably
- 12:03Speaker 1: over the years asked you about this maybe a dozen times.
- 12:07Speaker 1: But you're on the mound and Tony LaRussa came out.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Can you explain what that exchange was all about?
- 12:16Speaker 4: Uh So when I first came in, I came in
- 12:18Speaker 4: and he gave me the ball, and he kind of
- 12:20Speaker 4: gave me a side eye like like, and then nothing
- 12:25Speaker 4: was really said. And then Yachty I started warming up.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Next week, I know, balls were coming out of the
- 12:30Speaker 4: dugout at Yadi rolling across some plate and they were
- 12:33Speaker 4: like hey, like stop warming up or something like that,
- 12:37Speaker 4: and I was like what. And then YACHTI comes out
- 12:39Speaker 4: and they're like, hey they I don't know what's going on.
- 12:42Speaker 4: They told me that pretty much. They told me to
- 12:44Speaker 4: come out here. Then Tony comes out of the dugout
- 12:48Speaker 4: or he goes hey, we're gonna intention Yatti comes out
- 12:49Speaker 4: and goes, hey, I don't know what's going on here
- 12:50Speaker 4: intentionally walked this guy. I was like, okay, because that
- 12:53Speaker 4: was never said why when Tony was out there. So
- 12:56Speaker 4: then he comes out and tells me that we intentionally
- 12:58Speaker 4: walk him. He comes back out and goes, I don't
- 13:00Speaker 4: know what's going on. And then here comes Tony and
- 13:03Speaker 4: then Tony goes, hey, you weren't supposed to be in,
- 13:05Speaker 4: and I was said, all right, well, here he goes
- 13:08Speaker 4: and he took the ball from me.
- 13:09Speaker 3: That was it. That was all all I recall.
- 13:13Speaker 4: And so I came in to intentionally walk someone in
- 13:15Speaker 4: the World Series and then Mott came in and got
- 13:18Speaker 4: the next guy out, so you know, no harm was
- 13:20Speaker 4: done on our end, but except you know, maybe they
- 13:23Speaker 4: want to give more time to warm up, so they
- 13:25Speaker 4: had me come in and throw eight warm up pitches
- 13:27Speaker 4: and four intentionally, you know, an intentional walk.
- 13:31Speaker 3: I don't know. It was a wild little experiment experience for.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Me, reliving a World Series full paw and having Kyle
- 13:39Speaker 1: Gibson walk in the rain and then get defaded. This
- 13:42Speaker 1: show has gotten off the tracks, but it's the favorite
- 13:45Speaker 1: show that we've ever done, in my opinion. You are
- 13:48Speaker 1: watching Cardinal Territory on the Foul Territory Network.

- 14:53Speaker 1: Okay, the cards starting rotation has really come together era
- 14:58Speaker 1: right around three. Over their last twenty games, the bullpen
- 15:03Speaker 1: has been solid as well. The offense has slowed down
- 15:08Speaker 1: a little bit It is time for our Daily Dinger segment,
- 15:12Speaker 1: brought to you by Fan Duel. See how I see
- 15:19Speaker 1: how I waited for the for the graphics to pop in.
- 15:22Speaker 1: That's card production values. Yeah, so yvon Herrera, we both
- 15:26Speaker 1: agree it is an excellent hitter. This guy hasn't homeward
- 15:30Speaker 1: in like nineteen games or so I'm gonna pick him
- 15:33Speaker 1: as my daily dinger. The Pirates are coming to town.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Off day for the Cardinals today, but the Pirates are
- 15:39Speaker 1: coming to down I'm gonna say, we are gonna see
- 15:43Speaker 1: Yvonne Herrera go deep for the Cardinals.
- 15:46Speaker 3: What do you say, Lance, who's the starter? And do
- 15:49Speaker 3: we know the starters on Tuesday?
- 15:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll look at that.
- 15:53Speaker 4: I'm gonna go with I think he is a good pick, obviously,
- 15:56Speaker 4: because when you get in that long of a street
- 15:58Speaker 4: for a guy who's definitely okay, Bull, he's due.
- 16:01Speaker 3: But I'm gonna go with I'm gonna go I'm gonna
- 16:03Speaker 3: go with Burley. I like that one's just because just
- 16:06Speaker 3: because he's my guy.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Now, whoever picked Jordan Walker for our last Daily Demmer
- 16:11Speaker 1: segment was correct, But Walker is most probably you probably,
- 16:17Speaker 1: But we could pick Walker every time. We probably win.
- 16:20Speaker 1: So we're trying to go maybe a little bit off
- 16:22Speaker 1: the menu. So I appreciate it. Burley is a great hitter.
- 16:25Speaker 1: I think her Ara is a great hitter. There are
- 16:27Speaker 1: daily Dinger picks picks.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Head over. JJ is a good one to pick.
- 16:33Speaker 4: He likes he likes hitting against his home state, town team,
- 16:36Speaker 4: or whatever whatever he did when he was in Big
- 16:41Speaker 4: one to go with. Yeah, that might be might be
- 16:44Speaker 4: the one to go. Sometimes you just own a team forever,
- 16:47Speaker 4: you know. Maybe that's he's just gonna own his hometown
- 16:49Speaker 4: team forever.
- 16:50Speaker 5: So what you did was you just picked two. You
- 16:53Speaker 5: just picked two. That's fine, that's fine.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I am.
- 16:57Speaker 4: I find hedging bets are always a great idea.

- 17:30Speaker 8: All right.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Lance, So we talked a little pitching because that's shaping up.
- 17:34Speaker 1: We talked a little bit the offense needs an uptick.
- 17:36Speaker 1: We talked about fans with their shirts.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Aw.
- 17:39Speaker 1: I don't think we talk enough about the Cardinal defense. Now,
- 17:42Speaker 1: if you go by defensive run save, they're near the
- 17:45Speaker 1: top of baseball. There's some other defensive metrics that I
- 17:48Speaker 1: don't necessarily buy in errors things like that. Maybe they're
- 17:53Speaker 1: not at the top of the league, but you watch
- 17:54Speaker 1: the games. The Cardinals almost every game make a play
- 17:58Speaker 1: that could be game changing. I think these guys have ranged.
- 18:02Speaker 1: It's not just when it's right now dealing with a
- 18:04Speaker 1: knee issue. We'll find out more tomorrow. Weather Hole plays
- 18:08Speaker 1: great defense. They're strong up the middle. Pa has when
- 18:11Speaker 1: he's back there pretty solid, and whoever's in center has
- 18:16Speaker 1: been great church It could be Victor Scott the second.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Do we not talk enough about the Cardinal defense.
- 18:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think they get the credit yet because
- 18:25Speaker 4: they're so young, right, I think you're looking at when
- 18:28Speaker 4: you look at great defensive teams, they have three or
- 18:31Speaker 4: four Gold Glovers or multi time gold Glovers. These guys
- 18:36Speaker 4: are too young to even have them yet, except for Mason,
- 18:39Speaker 4: so I think once you look at this group in
- 18:41Speaker 4: two years down the line, three years down the line,
- 18:43Speaker 4: there's gonna be multiple guys with gold gloves. I think
- 18:47Speaker 4: that's when they're going to be like, oh, they really
- 18:48Speaker 4: were a good defensive team. But right now they don't
- 18:51Speaker 4: have any of the hardware, so people don't give them
- 18:53Speaker 4: respect as they should yet because of the lack of hardware.
- 18:57Speaker 4: So it will come with time with this group, I
- 18:59Speaker 4: think all the way around, I don't think there's anywhere
- 19:02Speaker 4: on the field that you can say there's a below
- 19:05Speaker 4: average defensive player.
- 19:07Speaker 3: There might be a number or somewhere.
- 19:11Speaker 4: Along the lines where they're like, oh, this guy grades
- 19:13Speaker 4: below average, but I would say the only only person
- 19:17Speaker 4: you can maybe do that too is uh Walker and Wright,
- 19:20Speaker 4: and I think he's a very very average defensive player,
- 19:25Speaker 4: and maybe with ability to throw the ball and stuff
- 19:27Speaker 4: like that, he diet grade higher than average.
- 19:30Speaker 3: So nobody.
- 19:31Speaker 4: As a pitcher, you always look behind you and you're like, man, okay,
- 19:36Speaker 4: I gotta keep the ball on the ground, or I
- 19:38Speaker 4: gotta you know, I gotta keep you know, I don't
- 19:40Speaker 4: want it you kind of you you do those things.
- 19:42Speaker 4: I gotta I gotta pitch a little differently because I
- 19:44Speaker 4: know that I might get myself in trouble here and
- 19:46Speaker 4: there if you're sitting standing on the mount. If I
- 19:48Speaker 4: was standing on the mount and I looked around at
- 19:50Speaker 4: each position, I'm okay, I can just go attack the
- 19:53Speaker 4: hitter the way I want to and do the things
- 19:55Speaker 4: I need to do because I know that everybody's got
- 19:58Speaker 4: their job covered and that's a very comfortable thing. And
- 20:00Speaker 4: I think that's why the pitching is doing what they're doing,
- 20:02Speaker 4: because there's no like, hey, I need I need to
- 20:05Speaker 4: keep them all the air, I need to keep them
- 20:07Speaker 4: all off this side of the field, blah blah blah.
- 20:09Speaker 4: So when you have that, you can go execute a
- 20:11Speaker 4: game plan and just pitch instead of trying to force
- 20:14Speaker 4: things and keep yourself out of trouble because you know
- 20:17Speaker 4: certain plays won't be made. Right now, they make the
- 20:19Speaker 4: plays they're supposed to, and then they also seem to
- 20:22Speaker 4: make that play that matters that to save two or
- 20:24Speaker 4: three run double with two outs or something like that,
- 20:27Speaker 4: right instead of being oh, there's gonna be airs. Every
- 20:29Speaker 4: team's gonna have airs, but they make the play when
- 20:32Speaker 4: they need to to make sure they don't have the
- 20:34Speaker 4: big inning or the you know, the late inning thing
- 20:37Speaker 4: or something like that. So I think that's why they're
- 20:40Speaker 4: not getting what they know, the love they deserve, because
- 20:43Speaker 4: it's not because a couple of airs here and there,
- 20:45Speaker 4: and those are gonna happen it with youth also, so
- 20:48Speaker 4: good defensive team all the way around, you.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Know, doesn't get enough love. In my opinion, I think
- 20:52Speaker 1: he's gonna be a goal glover Burly at first base.
- 20:56Speaker 1: He scoops everything, and you know he's kind of a
- 20:59Speaker 1: bigger so he doesn't always look graceful. That guy scoops everything.
- 21:04Speaker 1: I think he's gonna be a gold glover. Do you
- 21:06Speaker 1: do you see that in the yeah? So yeah, it
- 21:09Speaker 1: takes time.
- 21:10Speaker 4: And at first base it is such a weird one
- 21:12Speaker 4: right if you if you the airs are not there.
- 21:15Speaker 4: And I heard learning this a long time ago. Every
- 21:18Speaker 4: once in a while you make it, you know, you
- 21:20Speaker 4: make a diving play. You know, a picture can get
- 21:23Speaker 4: to first and stuff like that. Instead of that, uh,
- 21:26Speaker 4: you maybe make sure you go down on your knees,
- 21:28Speaker 4: the old uh, the old special you know exactly who
- 21:31Speaker 4: who the guys are that make sure they leave their
- 21:33Speaker 4: feet in the right times to make him diving place
- 21:37Speaker 4: when they don't have to be diving place. But that's
- 21:38Speaker 4: how you win gold gloves at first base and stuff
- 21:41Speaker 4: like that. You range two areas that other people don't
- 21:45Speaker 4: to make sure your range value in your and your
- 21:48Speaker 4: things go up. So U baally smart enough to figure
- 21:52Speaker 4: that out when it comes that time, and I think
- 21:53Speaker 4: he'll do. He'll be very very well equipped to handle
- 21:57Speaker 4: that when he needs to make his range values and
- 22:00Speaker 4: things like that go up. So that's when he's going
- 22:02Speaker 4: to start winning them.
- 22:04Speaker 5: You know. Jeff Soupon was a really good.
- 22:06Speaker 3: There's a mething to this. You got to you gotta
- 22:08Speaker 3: know the voters in the in what they do.
- 22:10Speaker 4: It's like, hey, this guy's on the mound today, he
- 22:13Speaker 4: can cover first Well, I'm going to go in the
- 22:15Speaker 4: hole a little bit more than I normally would because
- 22:17Speaker 4: my range.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Value is going to go up, and I just everybody's good.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Many years ago, Jeff Supan, who's been on our podcast,
- 22:27Speaker 1: good dude, wonderful guy, actually good pitcher for the Cardinals,
- 22:32Speaker 1: and one year they didn't bring him back, and uh,
- 22:34Speaker 1: he went to Milwaukee and I was talking to someone
- 22:38Speaker 1: in the front office about that and they said, I
- 22:40Speaker 1: don't think he's gonna have the same kind of numbers
- 22:42Speaker 1: because they don't have any defense behind him. And it
- 22:45Speaker 1: dawned on me that sometimes a starting pitcher owes whatever
- 22:51Speaker 1: he's accomplished terms of v r A and wins partly
- 22:54Speaker 1: to the defense. And then I thought, boy, quarterbacks in
- 22:58Speaker 1: the NFL usually go in and buy big gifts for
- 23:02Speaker 1: their offensive line. They buy them cars, golf carts help
- 23:06Speaker 1: come big name, big money starting pitchers. Don't buy golf
- 23:10Speaker 1: carts or other vehicles for the middle infielders that help
- 23:15Speaker 1: them post those kind of numbers.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that you're looking at catchers kind of
- 23:20Speaker 4: get that love, right, more so than you know, they get.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Watches and things like that.
- 23:25Speaker 4: I think that the big money starting pitchers, there's not
- 23:30Speaker 4: there's so many games, right, so many different things we
- 23:33Speaker 4: don't have, like the hey, you need a golf cart
- 23:36Speaker 4: because five days a week you have practice fields.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Right, we're gaming every day, so there's not a whole lot.
- 23:41Speaker 4: But you take care of those guys in other ways.
- 23:44Speaker 4: I like to take them to team dinners, pay for
- 23:46Speaker 4: their meals, you know. You know, there's certain little ways
- 23:49Speaker 4: to go about doing those things. And there's a lot
- 23:52Speaker 4: of guys that do those do those little things as
- 23:55Speaker 4: the course of the year goes on and stuff like that.
- 23:57Speaker 4: So football is a little different, right, you have your
- 24:01Speaker 4: O line would be like catchers to us, and then
- 24:03Speaker 4: you have your receivers and this and that tight ends
- 24:08Speaker 4: and stuff like that.
- 24:09Speaker 3: That would be like more of the position players.
- 24:10Speaker 4: So catchers get taken care of like O line than
- 24:13Speaker 4: the rest of them get taken care of in a
- 24:15Speaker 4: different way.
- 24:16Speaker 1: All it's good to hear, because, let's face it, a
- 24:19Speaker 1: lot of starting pictures have made a lot of money,
- 24:21Speaker 1: and I think they should spread around.
- 24:23Speaker 5: Some of that money.
- 24:24Speaker 1: That's going to do it for this edition of Cardinal Territory,
- 24:27Speaker 1: I hope you enjoyed it. A little rough around the edges.
- 24:30Speaker 1: We'll see it for the next episode. Hopefully that one
- 24:32Speaker 1: won't suck.
