- 0:00Speaker 1: This is a Ryan Kirkery lug them in The Philly Show.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Ryan Kirkering joins the show today, Ruby Tomorrow, Junior, Jim Salisbury, Todds,
- 0:10Speaker 2: the Lucky.
- 0:10Speaker 3: It is the Philly Show.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Beautiful day in clear Oata and we have a lot
- 0:15Speaker 2: of We had a lot of fun today talking with
- 0:17Speaker 2: Ryan Kirkering.
- 0:18Speaker 4: No doubt we were geeking out a little bit on
- 0:20Speaker 4: some of his h pitch grips. He's spent the winter
- 0:24Speaker 4: and spring training here learning a new pitch which he'll
- 0:27Speaker 4: he'll tell us about. And uh, you know, he also
- 0:30Speaker 4: talked about the difficult way last season ended, and uh,
- 0:33Speaker 4: I think this is a really mature guy who's going
- 0:35Speaker 4: to bounce back nicely.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a guy that a lot I mean not
- 0:38Speaker 3: a lot of people.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Everybody in camp is really rooting hard for, always has
- 0:42Speaker 2: been rooting hard for, and I think you will see why.
- 0:45Speaker 2: So here we go our chat with Oryan Kirkering. Ryan,
- 0:50Speaker 2: thanks for coming on the show.
- 0:52Speaker 3: We appreciate it.
- 0:52Speaker 2: We're here Clearwater Wednesday, and you just watched Zach Wheeler
- 0:58Speaker 2: throw a bullpen and it's kind of fun. You've seen
- 1:01Speaker 2: a lot of you guys down there watching our bullpen
- 1:03Speaker 2: a live VP. Yeah, what do you think Zach as
- 1:06Speaker 2: he comes back?
- 1:07Speaker 5: Zach just being Zach. I think just seeing his stuff
- 1:09Speaker 5: come back. You can see the excitement out there. Like
- 1:12Speaker 5: I said last time I was talking together. So I
- 1:14Speaker 5: think it's just always cool to see and just a
- 1:16Speaker 5: great calibard pitcher as much as he is, especially in
- 1:19Speaker 5: the last few years, or what he's done for this game.
- 1:21Speaker 5: I think it's just awesome to get every little ounce
- 1:23Speaker 5: it can.
- 1:23Speaker 4: I always find it interesting how these guys when when
- 1:27Speaker 4: somebody like Zach Wheeler or anybody really throws a bullpen,
- 1:31Speaker 4: everybody comes out and watches, and I think, there's you're
- 1:35Speaker 4: supporting your teammate, but isn't the fan in you coming
- 1:38Speaker 4: out as well?
- 1:39Speaker 1: For sure?
- 1:40Speaker 5: Yeah, I think just seeing just what he like I said,
- 1:42Speaker 5: what he brings to the table every single day he
- 1:44Speaker 5: brings on the mount, especially the many times he pitches,
- 1:48Speaker 5: I mean through the regular season, postseason, it's always great
- 1:50Speaker 5: to see what he does.
- 1:52Speaker 4: How about anything you've learned from a guy like that
- 1:54Speaker 4: having him as a teammate.
- 1:56Speaker 5: I think just his composure every time he goes out
- 1:58Speaker 5: there like it's nothing new, just want to win a ball,
- 2:00Speaker 5: game every single time. It doesn't matter if it's I
- 2:04Speaker 5: I said, regular season, early April, middle dog days of August,
- 2:09Speaker 5: where it can be hot some places, cold some places,
- 2:12Speaker 5: or it's October red October.
- 2:14Speaker 1: So I think it's always cool to see that.
- 2:16Speaker 2: And you've had an interesting spring. Of course you're kind
- 2:18Speaker 2: of coming back from this hamstring strain.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah, unfortunately.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Yeah, but I mean you threw.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Your pitching a game at the Carpenter Complex on Tuesday,
- 2:29Speaker 2: So can you tell everybody how you're doing and how
- 2:31Speaker 2: you think you're progressing, and do you have a chance
- 2:33Speaker 2: do you think to be on the opening day roster.
- 2:36Speaker 5: I think it's still up in the air right now
- 2:37Speaker 5: for opening Day. And I think obviously, as you guys know,
- 2:40Speaker 5: it's just as a relievery never know when you're gonna throw,
- 2:43Speaker 5: whether it's back to back, three or four pitch day,
- 2:46Speaker 5: off pitch, off pitch, you just.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Never know how the game's going to go.
- 2:49Speaker 5: So I think workld wise, I think trying to figure
- 2:52Speaker 5: out here soon next week or so before it break
- 2:55Speaker 5: and then, but it felt really good out there and
- 2:56Speaker 5: felt really good composure wise, stuff wise, I'm just ready
- 3:01Speaker 5: for we've got going on.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Next and new season brings a new pitch, absolutely, Yeah,
- 3:08Speaker 4: and I.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Brought a baseball, so and then that's the camera, so
- 3:13Speaker 2: if you can show so you're throwing a splitter.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, So it's kind of a mix of everything.
- 3:20Speaker 5: So it's kind of I have a hard time pronating sometimes,
- 3:24Speaker 5: but some guys, I'm a good superner.
- 3:25Speaker 1: That's why I think I thoroughly go with the sweeper
- 3:28Speaker 1: all the time.
- 3:28Speaker 5: Just I'm so used to the supernation of it, so
- 3:31Speaker 5: I can never like pronate and be able to have
- 3:34Speaker 5: the how Sanchy and like other guys in the league
- 3:37Speaker 5: have such great change ups because they have the great
- 3:39Speaker 5: supernation of it. So for me, what we've done is
- 3:42Speaker 5: try to kick it a little bit. So try to
- 3:44Speaker 5: like spike the index of it and try to put
- 3:47Speaker 5: my inside middle finger on this.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Scene like the horseshoot here.
- 3:52Speaker 5: That way it kicks down and it has the split
- 3:54Speaker 5: action with it, so I can just throw it like
- 3:56Speaker 5: a fastball and just keep the same velo or at
- 3:58Speaker 5: least try to keep the same arm action and through behind.
- 4:00Speaker 4: It is that the kick change we hear so much
- 4:03Speaker 4: about it.
- 4:03Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly this, so it just gives leeway for it.
- 4:09Speaker 5: So like how it's released with some guys, it just
- 4:11Speaker 5: comes out this way. So the last thing that touches
- 4:14Speaker 5: is the middle finger. Maybe some pitches ring finger, depending
- 4:18Speaker 5: on each guy. But how it comes out, it will
- 4:20Speaker 5: kick over this way. And that's why I have like
- 4:22Speaker 5: the dirty access or the dirty spin to where it
- 4:25Speaker 5: spins and the air resistance behind it will go armside.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Amazing the technology that's going into pitch shaping and then crazy,
- 4:33Speaker 4: it's amazing.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Just here here, here call the day. Now, let's let's
- 4:39Speaker 1: do this, let's do that.
- 4:40Speaker 5: Let's try to help you that we can throw those
- 4:43Speaker 5: pitches that way if you're not Like back in the day,
- 4:45Speaker 5: it was just oh, you're just not that guys, you're
- 4:46Speaker 5: not gonna throw it.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Now it's all right.
- 4:49Speaker 5: We can kind of not force you to throw it,
- 4:50Speaker 5: but we can like help you with how you throw
- 4:53Speaker 5: as a just a different pitcher.
- 4:55Speaker 3: You are so so okay.
- 4:57Speaker 2: So the season ends and you're reflecting ey your season
- 5:01Speaker 2: and you're reflecting, You're you're looking ahead at twenty twenty
- 5:04Speaker 2: six and you're going, all right, how can I get better?
- 5:07Speaker 2: Who first approaches you or who like who had the
- 5:09Speaker 2: idea of the splitter? Like I think that's kind of
- 5:12Speaker 2: interesting how this whole thing develops. Is it like a
- 5:15Speaker 2: text from Caleb mark Lower, the assistant pitching coach, like
- 5:18Speaker 2: a couple weeks after the season, is it you going
- 5:21Speaker 2: to them?
- 5:21Speaker 3: What's how does that? What's the What was the beginning
- 5:23Speaker 3: of that process?
- 5:24Speaker 1: I think it was just at first, kind of joking around.
- 5:28Speaker 5: I think probably even like twenty four, just joking around
- 5:32Speaker 5: of like let me throw a cutter, let me throw
- 5:34Speaker 5: a curveball, just to mess with them and just like
- 5:37Speaker 5: almost like poke a bear at them. But then like
- 5:39Speaker 5: last year, kind of talking with it more, going through
- 5:41Speaker 5: like the slumps and the ups and downs and kind
- 5:44Speaker 5: of seeing like what guys are looking at since last
- 5:47Speaker 5: year they had a full year of video on me.
- 5:49Speaker 5: So now it's okay, now it's going to two full
- 5:51Speaker 5: years of video on me, more experience. I know what
- 5:54Speaker 5: pitch obviously, sweeper is to go to. So now it's like,
- 5:57Speaker 5: what can help lay off the sweeper? I can just
- 6:00Speaker 5: throw that more So we kind of collectively decided like, hey,
- 6:03Speaker 5: let's try to lean on splitter and see where it
- 6:05Speaker 5: goes versus a power cutter. Maybe that which wouldn't make
- 6:09Speaker 5: too much sense because it's just more left or right right.
- 6:11Speaker 5: So we're trying to find something that evens out a
- 6:13Speaker 5: little bit, and we thought split was probably the best
- 6:15Speaker 5: decision for it because it helps with the two seam,
- 6:18Speaker 5: and it helps like differentirate the two and then keep
- 6:21Speaker 5: off the sweeper.
- 6:22Speaker 4: So basically you got one the sweeper going that way, yeah,
- 6:25Speaker 4: and the two are going that way yep. And when
- 6:27Speaker 4: this becomes in your arsenal, it'll go down.
- 6:30Speaker 1: More straight down yeah, and then the four will just
- 6:33Speaker 1: keep riding up top rail.
- 6:35Speaker 4: And get the ball moving all those directions.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Would want to be a hitter, I mean, yeah, yeah,
- 6:38Speaker 2: That's why I love those videos where they shows like
- 6:40Speaker 2: the balls and spread apart.
- 6:42Speaker 5: That's what you're trying to, Yeah, just move it like
- 6:45Speaker 5: throw it over like I'm trying to throw it fastball
- 6:46Speaker 5: down the middle and sweeper off of it. Two seam
- 6:49Speaker 5: middle in and then sweeper or splitter down and into
- 6:52Speaker 5: a writing right. And so that those conversations started after
- 6:56Speaker 5: the season. I know you said you were kind of joking, Okay,
- 6:58Speaker 5: So that starts after the season, and and then you
- 7:00Speaker 5: have to find a grip that will work for you.
- 7:02Speaker 5: When I talked to you a couple of weeks ago,
- 7:04Speaker 5: you said, uh, he said, basically, I went on YouTube
- 7:07Speaker 5: and I found, Yeah, Logan Gilbert's like, Logan Gilbert's got.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Maybe one of the best splitters in all Major League Baseball,
- 7:14Speaker 2: So yeah, he has a video on YouTube. Does someone say,
- 7:17Speaker 2: like go watch this or have you done this enough
- 7:22Speaker 2: where you're like, let me look up Logan Gilbert splitter
- 7:25Speaker 2: and see if there's a video out there of it.
- 7:27Speaker 3: A little bit both.
- 7:28Speaker 1: So Lowie sent me a couple pitch grips.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Kale sent me a couple of pitch grips to kind
- 7:31Speaker 5: of try and see, and then I was like, hell,
- 7:33Speaker 5: you guys just said, like what pitching ninja. I'm just
- 7:36Speaker 5: going there and see who's got it pitching ninja splitters.
- 7:39Speaker 5: He was the first video, so just kind of looking
- 7:41Speaker 5: through again, just picking his brain through like the video
- 7:43Speaker 5: of it. So okay, I think what's cool is like,
- 7:46Speaker 5: as much as a fan of what you can see
- 7:48Speaker 5: and like at the insights of big league guys, it's
- 7:50Speaker 5: still like it helps us because that's when we go
- 7:52Speaker 5: on daily day basis of like picking each other's brains
- 7:55Speaker 5: and like try to open that world of it.
- 7:57Speaker 2: So what about that So is that basically your grip
- 8:01Speaker 2: for the split? Is that basically how he throws his?
- 8:04Speaker 2: I wish no, okay, okay, so it's yeah.
- 8:06Speaker 1: It's different.
- 8:08Speaker 5: His is more like almost across the seam, So it's
- 8:11Speaker 5: like he's almost going like fully complete just because he's
- 8:14Speaker 5: that good and got big enough fingers. So for me,
- 8:17Speaker 5: because I'm more sweeper, I don't think I can really
- 8:19Speaker 5: hold that consistently and like be comfortable with that grip.
- 8:22Speaker 5: So I think for me, it was just trying to
- 8:24Speaker 5: find what was comfortable enough to like I can get
- 8:30Speaker 5: my tempo and not get out of my tempo and just.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Be ready underneath. Yeah. Yeah, so it's.
- 8:38Speaker 5: About like right here underneath comes like a four scene
- 8:40Speaker 5: and you're just tucking it and just letting it ride
- 8:42Speaker 5: out of the hands and just hopefully get that dirty
- 8:45Speaker 5: spin top spin and drop down to its amazing.
- 8:47Speaker 4: All these pictures will show their grips on videos and
- 8:51Speaker 4: you feel like they're giving away secrets. But I guess
- 8:54Speaker 4: you guys all learn from each other exactly.
- 8:56Speaker 5: I mean sometimes I know some guys will do it
- 9:00Speaker 5: different pitchcript to mess with people and see what they say.
- 9:02Speaker 5: Like I've heard different stories it's like, oh, this is
- 9:05Speaker 5: how I hold.
- 9:06Speaker 1: My my curveball like this.
- 9:08Speaker 5: But then I've seen guys where it's like, no, this
- 9:10Speaker 5: is actually how I hold it, and then they throw
- 9:11Speaker 5: it this way, and so it's like it's funny. You
- 9:13Speaker 5: just never know what type of guy you see with it,
- 9:16Speaker 5: so it's just different. You never know who you're gonna get.
- 9:20Speaker 5: So sometimes it's like it's a jokester, sometimes not, or
- 9:22Speaker 5: sometimes it is just how they throw it. And then
- 9:24Speaker 5: it's just because I think everyone knows, like with Gilbert,
- 9:28Speaker 5: he's got the gross splitter, so it's like even though
- 9:31Speaker 5: it's coming you can see out of the hand, it's
- 9:32Speaker 5: like it's still hard to hit base a split finger
- 9:35Speaker 5: fastball right right.
- 9:37Speaker 2: And so then do you start, like you start playing
- 9:40Speaker 2: catch with it, you know in the off season, just yeah,
- 9:43Speaker 2: just and then do you get you get immediate feedback,
- 9:46Speaker 2: I suppose right for sure?
- 9:47Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure, and catch away partners see where it goes.
- 9:50Speaker 5: Some days are better, some days are different. What kind
- 9:52Speaker 5: of tweak because you know how it is. There's some
- 9:56Speaker 5: days that the slider's going really good and there's other
- 9:59Speaker 5: days it's like just going terrible. So you just don't
- 10:01Speaker 5: want like, oh, today's just not a good day, that splitter.
- 10:05Speaker 5: Let me change every single thing. You're just kind of like,
- 10:08Speaker 5: let me take baby steps of like is this consistent?
- 10:10Speaker 5: Is this getting better? Just getting worse? And try to
- 10:13Speaker 5: tweak it from there.
- 10:14Speaker 4: At what point in your catchplay do you say to yourself,
- 10:17Speaker 4: I think I got it.
- 10:20Speaker 1: It can happen quick for some guys.
- 10:22Speaker 5: I think so, yeah, it's like that's how it was,
- 10:24Speaker 5: like me and my sweeper, like in high school learning it.
- 10:27Speaker 5: But I think now, like I think the sinker, I
- 10:30Speaker 5: started to throw it in twenty three coming up, and
- 10:33Speaker 5: then it took me almost like all twenty four to
- 10:36Speaker 5: really get fine tune in a little bit, and then
- 10:39Speaker 5: twenty five I felt like I was able to dot
- 10:41Speaker 5: it up pretty good. Mostly get a lot of ground balls,
- 10:44Speaker 5: get a lot of backdoors varieties for a hip, a
- 10:46Speaker 5: couple lefties. But I think just overall, it takes sometimes
- 10:50Speaker 5: the guys sometimes just that specific pitch to actually feel
- 10:53Speaker 5: comfortable and be able to throw wherever and whenever.
- 10:55Speaker 4: A slider sweeper, they're like cousins.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Right basically, I think they're the same thing.
- 11:00Speaker 5: Though you do yeah because sayang, because now I'm just
- 11:05Speaker 5: kind of like I always called it a slider. Now
- 11:08Speaker 5: with the new game of like, oh no, that was
- 11:10Speaker 5: a slider, this is a sweeper. I'm just kind of
- 11:12Speaker 5: like it's a ball that goes right to left, that's all.
- 11:15Speaker 4: What's the grip in the armstroke like on a sweeper.
- 11:18Speaker 5: So like for me, I know some guys are like
- 11:20Speaker 5: more high on the horseshoe like up here, but mine's
- 11:23Speaker 5: more like almost like a traditional curveball. And then how
- 11:26Speaker 5: I supinated. It's like I think of like a sideways
- 11:29Speaker 5: like curveball. So how it comes out, It comes out
- 11:32Speaker 5: like this that pops out, and like watching video, it
- 11:36Speaker 5: will gyro spin, but then it'll catch about maybe like
- 11:40Speaker 5: fifty feet like right before home plate, and then I'll
- 11:43Speaker 5: get dirty spin. So that's why it takes off so
- 11:45Speaker 5: much like so late. So that's why I like talking
- 11:48Speaker 5: with the hitters. It's like, no, that was a late sweeper,
- 11:50Speaker 5: like that was a late slider, because some guys will
- 11:52Speaker 5: have like more of the gyro spin and then it'll
- 11:55Speaker 5: tilt a little bit last second and that's how it
- 11:57Speaker 5: gets more the air resistance and it'll cut cross.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Now with the with the the kick splitter, uh, huh
- 12:04Speaker 4: Are you looking for differential off your fastball? Are you
- 12:09Speaker 4: more looking for movement.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Movement, move profile just because it'll help if it's the
- 12:13Speaker 5: same velo. I think the other day I think it
- 12:16Speaker 5: was like eighty six eighty eight, so about the same
- 12:19Speaker 5: speed as sweeper, same general profile, at least closer than
- 12:22Speaker 5: the two scene and stuff like that. So I think
- 12:25Speaker 5: seeing a slower speed for lefty going away from you
- 12:29Speaker 5: and then versus a sweeper coming at you, so I
- 12:32Speaker 5: think it opens door a little bit between a backfoot
- 12:35Speaker 5: sweeper or down the way split and just seeing the
- 12:39Speaker 5: difference of like, oh I can cheat to that, it's like,
- 12:41Speaker 5: oh no, that's going away from.
- 12:42Speaker 3: It, okay.
- 12:43Speaker 2: And then one other cool thing I think about learning
- 12:45Speaker 2: a new pitch, which you had mentioned a couple of
- 12:46Speaker 2: weeks ago, which I guess I didn't really consider, is
- 12:49Speaker 2: that not only do you have to find the grip
- 12:53Speaker 2: get comfortable with it, but then you also have to
- 12:55Speaker 2: figure out how you grip the ball or when you
- 12:58Speaker 2: grip it when you gloves so you're not like flaring
- 13:02Speaker 2: your glove out when your splitter, So like, what's that
- 13:05Speaker 2: is that? Is that a difficult process too to figure out?
- 13:07Speaker 2: How you do it, because these guys are so good
- 13:09Speaker 2: at picking tipping pitches. His Zeus got crushed two starts
- 13:13Speaker 2: last summer exactly tipping. So what's how do you kind
- 13:16Speaker 2: of figure out how to grip it when to grip
- 13:19Speaker 2: it so it looks like you're all your other three pitches.
- 13:23Speaker 5: Uh catch play a lot just during bullpens, try to
- 13:26Speaker 5: figure out what's comfortable what's not. Like I think I
- 13:29Speaker 5: think Gilbert does it, but I know like a lot
- 13:30Speaker 5: of other guys do it. They'll like pre grip splitter.
- 13:33Speaker 5: So it's like me talking with Lowe, talking with Klo,
- 13:35Speaker 5: I'm talking with Caesar about like what they think which
- 13:38Speaker 5: which I do, And they're like, just do whatever you
- 13:39Speaker 5: think is comfortable, Like whatever you think you could do
- 13:42Speaker 5: consistent and comfortable and not like it's caesarier said than
- 13:46Speaker 5: done than tip. But just are natural as humans, we
- 13:49Speaker 5: pattern a lot.
- 13:49Speaker 1: So I think it's just.
- 13:52Speaker 5: Not getting that routine of the pattern of it and
- 13:55Speaker 5: just seeing what I can do consistently without tipping.
- 13:58Speaker 4: Was this all good for you this winter, having a project,
- 14:00Speaker 4: having something to focus on after the tough way things
- 14:03Speaker 4: ended last year?
- 14:04Speaker 1: For sure?
- 14:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I think just it's a working progress every single day.
- 14:08Speaker 5: So I think having something to do, having something to
- 14:10Speaker 5: learn a little bit more, finding something cool to do.
- 14:12Speaker 3: I think that's what helped a lot for sure.
- 14:14Speaker 4: What was the key kind of and bouncing back from that.
- 14:18Speaker 5: I think just talking about it, I think more than
- 14:20Speaker 5: anything versus kind of I won't say running away from it,
- 14:22Speaker 5: but just like telling people how you feel about it.
- 14:26Speaker 5: It was like, yeah, it sucks, but you gotta just
- 14:28Speaker 5: keep moving on because it's not baseball is it's mess
- 14:31Speaker 5: up in the first out, there's still twenty six, twenty
- 14:34Speaker 5: seven ounce left of the game, So it's just you
- 14:37Speaker 5: keep moving.
- 14:38Speaker 3: That's how it is.
- 14:39Speaker 4: You're amazingly accountable, amazingly mature, in my opinion. Where does
- 14:43Speaker 4: that come from.
- 14:46Speaker 5: I think just seeing the older guys and the veteran
- 14:49Speaker 5: guys on the team and just being accountable and obviously
- 14:52Speaker 5: just being a fan of sports. You kind of see
- 14:55Speaker 5: where it's like, oh that guy didn't look good, like
- 14:57Speaker 5: not talking to the media whether he wanted to or no,
- 15:00Speaker 5: or whether he liked it or not, or what happens,
- 15:03Speaker 5: and let the emotions get to it.
- 15:05Speaker 1: But I think just.
- 15:07Speaker 5: Even though it's it was a shitty moment, kind of thing.
- 15:11Speaker 5: It was just as long as you're accountable and you
- 15:12Speaker 5: just kind of talk about it and just let it
- 15:14Speaker 5: be and just say, hey, fucked up, then that's what happens.
- 15:18Speaker 5: And I think also just seeing how like Balm did
- 15:20Speaker 5: it too, I guess specifically where it's like I want
- 15:23Speaker 5: to say, it's a similar situation but kind of in
- 15:25Speaker 5: the same way where it's like, you know, you messed up,
- 15:27Speaker 5: but if you just stay accountable, especially in Philly, and
- 15:29Speaker 5: I think that's all they cared about.
- 15:32Speaker 4: I think the fans appreciated. I think you're gonna get
- 15:34Speaker 4: a standing ovation on an opening day.
- 15:36Speaker 5: I really do.
- 15:37Speaker 2: I do.
- 15:38Speaker 3: I do.
- 15:38Speaker 4: I think people and you're a human, the people in
- 15:42Speaker 4: the seats are human and you have that connection.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so.
- 15:46Speaker 5: I think it just shows the little vulnerability and shows like,
- 15:49Speaker 5: hey messed up, like I said, and just I'm here
- 15:51Speaker 5: to keep moving on forward.
- 15:53Speaker 3: I mean, you had like Bradley to reach out to you.
- 15:55Speaker 2: If any of those guys be talking to those guys
- 15:56Speaker 2: since their first conversations or.
- 16:00Speaker 3: You know, you did have a lot of people reach
- 16:02Speaker 3: out to us for sure. That was pretty cool.
- 16:03Speaker 5: Yeah, not a whole lot recently, just kind of letting
- 16:06Speaker 5: season go, but I'm sure he's soon reach out a
- 16:09Speaker 5: little bit and see how everything's going with it.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Yeah, and then I think a lot of people are
- 16:14Speaker 3: excited about this bullpen.
- 16:16Speaker 2: You start this you start this season this year with Doran,
- 16:19Speaker 2: you sign Brad Keller, you got Alvarado back, You're in
- 16:24Speaker 2: there bowling banks. I mean, Kyle Bachiss has looked really good.
- 16:28Speaker 2: I don't know who else is gonna be in the bullpen,
- 16:31Speaker 2: But what has you kind of excited about this group?
- 16:34Speaker 5: I think it's just a good group of guys overall,
- 16:36Speaker 5: on and off the field. I think just it's a
- 16:39Speaker 5: fun bullpen, especially with Ali being back. I think just
- 16:42Speaker 5: having the laughter in there. Duran's out there with the
- 16:45Speaker 5: laughter of it, Tanner always just talking his ears off
- 16:48Speaker 5: with everything and how he is, and then just kind
- 16:51Speaker 5: of I think everyone just being a kid out there almost.
- 16:53Speaker 5: I think that's what makes it fun and just kind
- 16:55Speaker 5: of putting each other's like foot out there for each
- 16:58Speaker 5: other and just kind of be on each other's back
- 17:00Speaker 5: and just always be there.
- 17:01Speaker 4: How much did the feel of the bullpen changed last
- 17:04Speaker 4: year when you when you got Duran.
- 17:06Speaker 5: I think it changed a lot in the good ways,
- 17:08Speaker 5: just because I think we're able to settle in a
- 17:12Speaker 5: little bit more.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I would say no one was panicking.
- 17:15Speaker 5: Over like what we were doing or what roles were,
- 17:17Speaker 5: just because roles were kind of I wanna say, up
- 17:20Speaker 5: in the air, but it was we had a closure
- 17:22Speaker 5: by committeees, so we weren't sure what was going to
- 17:24Speaker 5: go on.
- 17:24Speaker 1: So now I think it's sentencedone.
- 17:26Speaker 5: Obviously Duran's got the ninth unless obviously postseason is always different,
- 17:30Speaker 5: so you never know. But I think overall, it's just
- 17:33Speaker 5: you know that there's a group of guys that if
- 17:36Speaker 5: the starter gets hurt on the first pitch of the game,
- 17:39Speaker 5: and all we gotta do is go through one through
- 17:40Speaker 5: eight and just keep it close and then let Durant
- 17:43Speaker 5: get the ninth, or if whatever baseball happens and we
- 17:47Speaker 5: go to the extras for whatever reason, we got each
- 17:49Speaker 5: other's back to keep.
- 17:51Speaker 2: So it's funny you mentioned we know Alvarado is just
- 17:54Speaker 2: loud and gregarious and laughs lot.
- 17:56Speaker 3: He's very funny. Uh here, he was joking around the
- 17:59Speaker 3: other day in the clubhouse.
- 18:00Speaker 2: I had to walk out because I was laughing so hard.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Banks very chatty, great guy. But you said Doron is
- 18:07Speaker 2: actually pretty funny. Yeah, we have not probably seen too
- 18:10Speaker 2: much of that. He was joking the other day about
- 18:12Speaker 2: his secret pitch he's throwing a split change. Yeah, he
- 18:15Speaker 2: was kind of laughing about it. I don't want to
- 18:17Speaker 2: tell you what it is, and you kind of acknowledge it.
- 18:19Speaker 2: But he's describe his personality because that was kind of
- 18:23Speaker 2: I had not really seen him joking around so far,
- 18:26Speaker 2: but he does do.
- 18:27Speaker 1: That a little bit.
- 18:28Speaker 5: Yeah, he's quiet about it, but he's always good. He's
- 18:30Speaker 5: always got a quick laughter here and there. It's never
- 18:33Speaker 5: I wouldn't say, like I said, it's never gonna be
- 18:34Speaker 5: like ALVII, but it's always just a quick, subtle like,
- 18:37Speaker 5: oh that was good.
- 18:37Speaker 1: That was a good joke. And like we always try
- 18:39Speaker 1: to joke around as much as we can.
- 18:40Speaker 5: I think the more we joke around with each other,
- 18:43Speaker 5: I think the more comfortable we get, and the more
- 18:46Speaker 5: comfortable and putting each other behind each other thing helps
- 18:49Speaker 5: and try to build the comb already between each other
- 18:51Speaker 5: and push each other have that tough love moments, and
- 18:54Speaker 5: when you have that tough love moment or have.
- 18:56Speaker 1: The nurturing moment.
- 18:57Speaker 5: When you have the nurturing moment, the learning all on
- 19:00Speaker 5: and off the fields of you know, me and Tanner
- 19:03Speaker 5: always talk all the time about mechanics of what he
- 19:05Speaker 5: can do better, what I can do better, and just
- 19:07Speaker 5: kind of pick each other's brain.
- 19:08Speaker 1: So I think it just builds that back and forth,
- 19:11Speaker 1: like the brotherhood behind it.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Did what did you?
- 19:13Speaker 5: Did you?
- 19:14Speaker 4: What did you think the first time he saw the
- 19:16Speaker 4: light show Durand's Light Show?
- 19:17Speaker 5: Did you?
- 19:18Speaker 4: Could you actually see it or were you talk too
- 19:20Speaker 4: far away?
- 19:20Speaker 1: In the bull play, No, we could see it. We
- 19:22Speaker 1: can see it. Pretty cool. It was awesome.
- 19:24Speaker 5: Saw some pregame of it when they were trying to
- 19:26Speaker 5: test it out and stuff like that. So we're able
- 19:28Speaker 5: to see like the spider walking right field. So obviously
- 19:30Speaker 5: we couldn't see that unless we poked our heads all
- 19:32Speaker 5: the way out there. But it was cool to see
- 19:34Speaker 5: with all the fans interacting and then seeing the big
- 19:37Speaker 5: scoreboard and left field and just how everyone just interacted
- 19:41Speaker 5: him going out there.
- 19:41Speaker 1: It was pretty cool.
- 19:42Speaker 3: I guess in that moment you kind of become a
- 19:44Speaker 3: fan a little bit. I would think, right hundred percent, yeah.
- 19:47Speaker 5: Because you just know, like in joking, when it's like
- 19:50Speaker 5: eighth inning happens and we got like a three run lead, especially,
- 19:55Speaker 5: it's like you almost want to take your cleats off
- 19:56Speaker 5: at that point, right, it's like, oh, this game's don
- 20:00Speaker 5: over with Durant's gonna come in and close the door
- 20:02Speaker 5: and nine pitches, three strikeouts and y's it.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Well, I also know fans.
- 20:05Speaker 2: I mean seriously, though, fans, if the Phillies are up
- 20:09Speaker 2: three runs are less going into the ninth inning or
- 20:11Speaker 2: in the eighth inning, they legitimately don't want you guys
- 20:14Speaker 2: to score another run if they stayed that late in
- 20:16Speaker 2: the game, because they get they're like.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Oh no, now he might not come in and pat yea,
- 20:21Speaker 3: you know what I mean.
- 20:22Speaker 5: It almost gets us Like I say that in my head,
- 20:24Speaker 5: it's like, are gonna get a boo die if we
- 20:26Speaker 5: go out there if it's like a.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Five run and it's like, hey, you've been thrown a
- 20:29Speaker 1: couple of days, Like go through out there.
- 20:31Speaker 5: I'm like, I'm gonna get a bude because I'm not
- 20:32Speaker 5: Duran coming out with the light show.
- 20:35Speaker 1: But no, it's always cool.
- 20:36Speaker 4: We talk about fans. Who was your favorite player as
- 20:39Speaker 4: a kid.
- 20:39Speaker 5: When you were young fans, Oh, there's a lot it
- 20:45Speaker 5: was raised fan growing up as kids. So I always
- 20:47Speaker 5: grew up like ben Zobris ev Longoria. That's why it's
- 20:52Speaker 5: fun to see, like when Ceas is here, you can
- 20:54Speaker 5: go through his glory days of stuff, and like through
- 20:57Speaker 5: the first couple of years, there'd be a few days
- 20:59Speaker 5: where we're just whole ship with each other. I mean like,
- 21:01Speaker 5: oh remember this guy, Remember that guy, and like see
- 21:03Speaker 5: how his personality.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Was through the team and stuff like that. So it
- 21:06Speaker 1: was always cool to see.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Did you remember do you remember the World Series against
- 21:09Speaker 4: Tampa Bay?
- 21:10Speaker 5: Oh?
- 21:10Speaker 1: Yeah, that was cool. I liked it.
- 21:12Speaker 5: Went to the trying to think it was game one
- 21:15Speaker 5: or Game two when they're in Tampa. Yeah, So it
- 21:19Speaker 5: was pretty cool to see that way and just kind
- 21:20Speaker 5: of full circle of things.
- 21:22Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 21:22Speaker 4: How many games and years you go to over there
- 21:24Speaker 4: as a kid.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Like five.
- 21:28Speaker 5: So it wasn't like season ticket or anything, but it's
- 21:30Speaker 5: like if it was cool enough to go, oh, they're
- 21:32Speaker 5: playing Yankees, let's go watch the Yankees, because that's when
- 21:35Speaker 5: they had a ra Jeter Pasada canoe and they were
- 21:39Speaker 5: like when it was Boston, it was like big Poppy
- 21:42Speaker 5: Pad trying to think, gosh, Johnny Damon, think Coco Cris.
- 21:47Speaker 5: Towards the end of his career and stuff like that.
- 21:49Speaker 5: So it's kind of cool to see like those guys
- 21:50Speaker 5: and like grew up watching and you've pitched there.
- 21:53Speaker 1: I haven't pitched there yet.
- 21:54Speaker 4: You haven't pitched there yet.
- 21:57Speaker 5: No next year, next year? Wow, So I got a
- 21:59Speaker 5: little ways to check off that bucket list.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Did you pitch over at Steinburner Field last Yeah? Yeah,
- 22:06Speaker 2: that does not count.
- 22:06Speaker 1: It doesn't count at all.
- 22:07Speaker 3: That does not count.
- 22:08Speaker 1: So I'm just hoping we get back here.
- 22:10Speaker 5: Hopefully it doesn't mess up with the lockout next year
- 22:13Speaker 5: and stuff like that, and that would just mess up
- 22:14Speaker 5: our schedule of whatever. The hundred and sixty two we'll
- 22:17Speaker 5: play everyone, So hopefully just be able to play it
- 22:20Speaker 5: drop at some point and be cool to check off
- 22:22Speaker 5: that bucket list.
- 22:23Speaker 4: It's actually I think it's a great place to watch
- 22:25Speaker 4: a game. It's not the most attractive stadium from outside,
- 22:28Speaker 4: but the sight lines are very good and the press
- 22:31Speaker 4: box is excellent, great vantage point. I don't play.
- 22:36Speaker 3: That's right, that's right. Well, Ryan Man, thanks a lot
- 22:39Speaker 3: for joining us. It was fun. Thanks for showing us
- 22:41Speaker 3: how you're gonna throw your splitty and yeah, and.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Showing people one more time the diving.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Can you describe what seems shifted? Wake is?
- 22:51Speaker 2: I remember talking to that's that's the word throwing around
- 22:54Speaker 2: a lot. Yeah, And I only asked that because I asked.
- 22:56Speaker 2: I had Mark Lloyd try to explain it to me
- 22:58Speaker 2: once in San Francisco. I couldn't and he went through
- 23:01Speaker 2: this great explanation. And then if somebody put a gun
- 23:04Speaker 2: in my head said what is it, I don't think
- 23:07Speaker 2: I could do it.
- 23:07Speaker 5: So I mean it's think it's similar to like the kickness,
- 23:10Speaker 5: like the kick change of it, Like it seems shifting,
- 23:12Speaker 5: so how it rotates out of the ball, Okay, and
- 23:14Speaker 5: so like we'll have diagrams too, where it'll be like
- 23:19Speaker 5: it looks like a baseball like this, and then it's
- 23:22Speaker 5: how you like you put pressure on it or like
- 23:24Speaker 5: how much pressure the ball comes out because you want
- 23:26Speaker 5: it like as center mass as you can.
- 23:29Speaker 1: That way, it's like true spin, true efficiency, like true
- 23:31Speaker 1: Rye kind of like.
- 23:34Speaker 5: Zax ball just because he has great extension, yeah, great
- 23:37Speaker 5: force behind it obviously throws hard, so like his center
- 23:40Speaker 5: mass is like pretty dialed in. Now some guys like
- 23:43Speaker 5: me just because my finger's a little wider, like I'm
- 23:46Speaker 5: not inconsistent because instead of throwing it like here with it,
- 23:50Speaker 5: I maybe throwing like that with it on the like
- 23:53Speaker 5: just the slightest movement of like me whatever coming up,
- 23:57Speaker 5: and then like the hand shifts a little bit. I
- 23:59Speaker 5: clipped my leve a little bit, so the ball moves
- 24:02Speaker 5: just even by one scene, it changes the whole ball.
- 24:05Speaker 1: So I think it's just crazy how that one little
- 24:07Speaker 1: instance of.
- 24:08Speaker 3: It or like the I don't know.
- 24:11Speaker 5: For me, I'm like a texture guy, So like if
- 24:13Speaker 5: the ball was like too slick, I don't like it
- 24:15Speaker 5: at used to like the leather of it, because then
- 24:17Speaker 5: my my thumb can't push off on the scenes well,
- 24:20Speaker 5: or I can't like flick the baseball well, and it
- 24:22Speaker 5: has this weird like seam shifted and it moves differently
- 24:26Speaker 5: or like doesn't have the same movement profile or like
- 24:28Speaker 5: the same good feel behind the baseball.
- 24:31Speaker 4: In your mind when you seek all this movement. And
- 24:33Speaker 4: you guys are like scientists, but are you Is your
- 24:36Speaker 4: ball a swinging miss or weak contact?
- 24:40Speaker 1: Depends on the situation. Okay, there's some situations where.
- 24:48Speaker 5: Like Kyk when I walked to him in the last game,
- 24:50Speaker 5: I was like second and third obviously it's key k
- 24:53Speaker 5: during the postseason.
- 24:54Speaker 1: But it's like I got free base Pius on deck.
- 24:57Speaker 1: He wasn't doing well all the time.
- 24:58Speaker 5: But I think just in those situations like okay, guy,
- 25:01Speaker 5: free base, I'm gona try. We can miss here and
- 25:03Speaker 5: see what happens. And there's those situations where it's like
- 25:08Speaker 5: I'm trying to think like Colorado, it's very hard to
- 25:10Speaker 5: get strike out there, just because the irresistance on the ball,
- 25:13Speaker 5: the spin axis on the ball and stuff like that.
- 25:15Speaker 1: It's hard to get good, depthy pitches there.
- 25:18Speaker 5: It's like there, I'm just going in trying to get
- 25:20Speaker 5: weak contact ground balls and just let them get out
- 25:23Speaker 5: of themselves.
- 25:24Speaker 4: It's great stuff.
- 25:25Speaker 3: That's great stuff.
- 25:26Speaker 5: Man.
- 25:26Speaker 3: Yeah, Ryans again, I appreciate it.
- 25:28Speaker 1: I appreciate it.
- 25:30Speaker 3: That's awesome. The Philly Show is brought to you by
