- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. A Feria of the sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost, September 17 in the year of our Lord, 2026. Of today's feast Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, two years before his death, Saint Francis retired to Mount Alvernia where he began a fast of forty days in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel. And lo, in the midst of his meditation, he saw a figure like a Seraphim with six wings dazzling and burning whose feet and hands were nailed to a cross. Aware that suffering is incompatible with the immortality of a Seraphic spirit he then understood that he would become more like Jesus and bear his cross after him.
- 1:04Not by physical martyrdom but by a mystical kindling of divine love. And in order that this crucified love might become an example to us all, five wounds resembling those of Jesus on the cross appeared on his feet, hands, and side. From the latter blood flowed abundantly. The facts were so fully authenticated later that Benedict XI ordered them to be commemorated every year And Paul the fifth to kindle in the faithful the love of Jesus crucified extended the feast to the whole church. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost.
- 2:01Amen. The introit. Have mercy, o lord. For mercy, I plead continually. Who is so kind and forgiving, Lord, as thou art?
- 2:18So rich in mercy to all who invoke thee. Turn thy ear, Lord, and listen to me in my helplessness and my need. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Have mercy, oh Lord.
- 2:50For mercy I plead continually. Who is so kind and forgiving Lord as thou art. So rich in mercy to all who invoke thee. The Collect, let us pray. Lord, we pray thee that thy grace may always go with us before and after making us continually zealous in good works through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 3:37Amen. A commemoration of the Stigmata of Saint Francis. O Lord Jesus Christ, who didst reproduce in the flesh of the most blessed Francis the sacred marks of thy own sufferings so that in a world grown cold our hearts might be filled with burning love of thee, Graciously enable us by his merits and prayers to bear the cross without faltering, and to bring forth worthy fruits of penitence. Thou, who art God, living and reigning with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 4:27A lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians. Brethren, let there be no discouragement then over the affliction I undergo on your behalf. It is an honor done to you. With this in mind then, I fall on my knees to the father of our Lord Jesus Christ, that father from whom all fatherhood in heaven and on earth takes its title, may he, out of the rich treasury of his glory, strengthen you through his spirit with a power that reaches your innermost being. May Christ find a dwelling place through faith in your hearts.
- 5:22May your lives be rooted in love founded on love. May you and all the saints be enabled to measure in all its breadth and length and height and depth the love of Christ to know what passes knowledge. May you be filled with all the fullness God has to give. He whose power is at work in us is powerful enough and more than powerful enough to carry out his purpose beyond all our hopes and dreams. May he be glorified in the church and in Christ Jesus to the last generation of eternity.
- 6:21Amen. The gradual. Will not the heathen learn reverence, O Lord, for thy glorious name and all those monarchs of the earth when they hear that the Lord has built Scion anew ready to be revealed there in glory. Alleluia. Alleluia.
- 6:51Sing the Lord a new song. A song of wonder at his doings. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Luke. At that time, there was a Sabbath day on which Jesus was asked to take a meal with one of the chief pharisees.
- 7:16And as he went into the house, they were watching him. Here his eye was met by the sight of a man who had the dropsy. Jesus asked the lawyers and the Pharisees openly, Is healing allowed on the Sabbath day? Then as they did not answer, he took the man by the hand and sent him away healed. And he turned on them and said, is there any one of you who will not pull out his ass or his ox immediately if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath?
- 7:58To this, they could make no answer. He also had a parable for the guests who were invited as he observed how they chose the chief places for themselves. He said to them, when any man invites thee to a wedding, do not sit down in the chief place. He may have invited some guest whose rank is greater than thine. If so, his host in thine will come and say to thee, make room for this man.
- 8:35And so thou wilt find thyself taking with a blush the lowest place of all. Rather, when thou art summoned, go straight to the lowest place and sit down there. So when he who invited thee comes in, he will say, my friend, go higher than this, and then honor shall be thine before all that sit down in thy company. Everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he that humbles himself shall be exalted. The Offeratory.
- 9:22Lord, give heed and help me. Confusion and dread be theirs who lay plots against my life. Lord, give heed and help me. The secret. Cleanse us, we pray thee, O Lord, by the working of this day's sacrifice, and in mercy so deal with us that we may become worthy to take part in it.
- 9:54A commemoration of the Stigmata of Saint Francis. Hallow the gifts we are dedicating to thee, O Lord, and at the intercession of blessed Francis, cleanse us from all stain of sin through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Common Preface Just it is indeed and fitting, right in for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty. The dominions worship it.
- 10:50The power stand in awe. The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory.
- 11:23Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Oh Lord, I will commemorate the faithfulness that belongs only to thee.
- 11:46It is thou, O Lord, that hast inspired me ever since the days of my youth. O God, do not fail me even now when I am old and gray headed. The post communion. Let us pray. Graciously purify our souls, we pray thee, and by means of this heavenly sacrament renew them in such fashion that our bodies too may find new strength both now and in the time to come.
- 12:31A commemoration of the Stigmata of Saint Francis. O God, who didst by manifold revelation show forth in thy blessed confessor Francis the wondrous mysteries of the cross, we pray thee grant that we may ever follow the example of his self sacrifice and find strength in constant meditation upon that cross through our Lord Jesus Christ thy son who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
- 13:31Let us bless the Lord. Saint Francis, pray for us.
