- 1:39We're very happy to have him on the first time on job in the
- 1:41mouth. We are now talking to former
- 1:43Expos, Cubs, Padres and Blue Jays catcher Michael Barrett.
- 1:48Michael, what's up, buddy? Hey, nothing much thanks for
- 1:50having me on the show, I appreciate it.
- 1:52Absolutely, Mike. And obviously there's a lot to
- 1:55get into it. And, and with the X Expos, I
- 1:58mean, they're an organization that are no longer here.
- 2:01And the Expos had a chance to possibly win a World Series that
- 2:04year. They had just a tremendously
- 2:07talented team. Vladimir Guerrero senior was
- 2:09there. Pedro Martinez was there.
- 2:11I mean, you guys were absolutely loaded.
- 2:15I I mean, could you remember that time and, and tell us a
- 2:19little bit about that particular team and how sensational that
- 2:22team was? In 1994, the Expos did, in fact,
- 2:26have the best record in baseball, and that's ultimately
- 2:30LED what led me to going in the last, the last pick in the first
- 2:35round. And on that team, Larry Walker,
- 2:39Marquis Grissom, Kenny Hill, I mean, the list goes on.
- 2:44Pedro Martinez, Kurt Reader, Felipe Alou at the helm, his son
- 2:50Moises on the team, arguably one of the best teams in baseball
- 2:55history, all playing together. And, you know, being from
- 3:00Atlanta, you know, the Atlanta Braves were all of the hype for
- 3:04me. And so, you know, I didn't hear
- 3:06much, just saw random, you know, highlights of Braves versus
- 3:11Expos. But you know, when I got drafted
- 3:14and learned very quickly of the history of the Montreal Expos
- 3:19and learned of the talent, top talented team that that, that
- 3:23they had and, and all of the players that came with that, it
- 3:27was a huge, huge honor. And to be able to finally get to
- 3:31the big leagues later on in 1998 and have the opportunity to play
- 3:35for Felipe Alou was just magical.
- 3:37It was just an unbelievable honor and blessing.
- 3:41You look at Netflix and Netflix has this expose documentary.
- 3:45I watched all of it. I didn't know the insurance and
- 3:47the outs of what happened until I got a chance to really
- 3:51understand what was going on in the back end when they were
- 3:53trying to find ownership and they didn't want to bring an
- 3:56American owner. And then it was all about
- 3:58bringing it, making sure that it stayed in Canada.
- 4:01And then as soon as they, they transitioned, there was a fight
- 4:04between who owns what and who's the leader of the, the, the
- 4:07group of ownership. When that was going on, when,
- 4:10when you saw what was going on and the fact that they fired a
- 4:13fleet and, and all the the things that all the things that
- 4:16transition after that, were you, were you surprised that all of
- 4:20this just happened so fast and so quickly where the Expos had
- 4:24to move all the way to Washington?
- 4:25Yeah, all of that was shocking to me.
- 4:28I watched the Netflix documentary and, you know, I had
- 4:32no idea that a lot of that was going on as a player, you know,
- 4:35they did a really good job of keeping that from us.
- 4:38And, you know, I don't know how else we would have been able to
- 4:42perform to know that all of those things were going on.
- 4:47You know, as a player, like I said, we were blessed to have
- 4:51great managers that were able to keep that from us and allow us
- 4:54to play and continue to focus on the field.
- 4:57We, we, we knew as players and being a part of the union that
- 5:02there was there was a chance that there could be contraction,
- 5:07that there was a chance of relocation.
- 5:09We had members of our team that were out on a exploration for
- 5:15our next site in in the event that we were to relocate.
- 5:19But for a while there, there was there was a short window of time
- 5:22where we thought we were not going to have a job as members
- 5:27of the Montreal Expos, that our team was going to be contracted
- 5:30and that we didn't know what we were going to do.
- 5:32We did, we did in fact go through that as players and that
- 5:36was shared with us and, and to put that behind us and to be
- 5:40able to and, and to try to focus was, was difficult at times.
- 5:43You know, when you're thinking about, you know, losing your
- 5:45job, it, it can be tough, you know, as you're playing.
- 5:48But All in all, you know that that documentary that they put
- 5:53on Netflix 90, I'd say 90% of what was being said.
- 5:58We had no idea, sorry. That's right.
- 6:01No idea, Michael. What's up man?
- 6:08What's going on? Another day in paradise in good
- 6:11old Nebraska. You know that goes I I I just
- 6:14got noticed that my son and them are coming over to play cards so
- 6:18nice. No, it was just it's something
- 6:22obviously I I was towards the tail end of your career, but it
- 6:26was funny when I was looking you up and in your career and, and
- 6:30to do what you did at the length of what you did, you faced over
- 6:34700 pitchers in your career. You've had some really good
- 6:37numbers against some really, really good dudes.
- 6:41This happened to be in the Hall of Fame.
- 6:43What was there one dude that you, as I look at your numbers
- 6:47and see the success you had against certain guys and the
- 6:50numbers sometimes speak of themselves, but was there one
- 6:53dude And I always, I always love this question.
- 6:54Was there one dude that you just always felt comfortable in the
- 6:57box? And there was a one dude where
- 6:59you're just like, I can't figure him out.
- 7:00I don't, I don't know what to do here.
- 7:02Like he could throw a water. Missed it?
- 7:05No, that's really cool that you're able to pull those stats
- 7:07up. I'd love to hear more about him.
- 7:09I, I try to look up every once in a while, you know, Greg
- 7:12Maddox will piss me off and I'll be like I owned him.
- 7:15I'm going to look him up. 343 off Greg Maddox.
- 7:18In 13. Thank you yeah, yeah.
- 7:20And I would barely call that owning him because they probably
- 7:23were all little singles. Or he would argue that 343 isn't
- 7:28a lot of damage there, that I probably didn't score more runs
- 7:31and. But also you got to give
- 7:33yourself credit because that was the most at bat you had against
- 7:36one player. Oh really?
- 7:37I had no idea. And, you know, he always gives
- 7:39me a hard time that he had more stolen bases than me.
- 7:42So I can't, I can't really brag about too much against him.
- 7:45He always has something to come back at me with.
- 7:48But yeah, you know, I think I think I was a a good ball
- 7:53hitter. You know, I wasn't a bad ball
- 7:55hitter like Vladimir. If the guy was in the zone, I
- 7:58was going to have a better chance of success.
- 8:02I really struggled with guys that were erratic or were, you
- 8:07know, just kind of wild, you know, but could find the zone
- 8:11occasionally, you know, and those guys gave me fits.
- 8:15There were guys that absolutely owned me and I, Brad Penny, for
- 8:20example, I have no idea why he owned me so bad.
- 8:23I mean, I square balls up, but I mean, they would just go right
- 8:27at people and he's probably sitting at home.
- 8:28I'm hoping that he's listening to this and laughing because,
- 8:32you know, it's one of those things as a player, you know,
- 8:34you know, you know deep down that you know when somebody just
- 8:38has your number. And for the longest time, Tom
- 8:42Glavin. One for 20 off him, by the way.
- 8:45Off Brad Penny. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:48I swear, I, I'm, I, I kid you not, I would hit line drives
- 8:52right at people when I did hit them hard.
- 8:54And I'd be like, it just wasn't meant to be.
- 8:56I just wasn't meant to ever get more than one hit off of Brad
- 8:59Penny, I guess. So you were one of the catchers
- 9:01that actually I found this out play catcher and third base.
- 9:04Let's how soon you see catcher and first base, but catcher
- 9:07third base, a very rare combination.
- 9:08Like what was that kind of adjustment like?
- 9:11Yeah, it was crazy. You know, early on I was told,
- 9:15and I don't know if this is true, I was told that there were
- 9:18only after 1999. Now, I know Brandon Hinge was a
- 9:23great player and he was doing the same thing in Detroit, the
- 9:26same time I was in Montreal doing the third base catcher.
- 9:30But I was told in 1999 that there were only two other
- 9:36players in the history of the game to play third and to catch
- 9:39and their rookie season as much as I did, and that was Joe Torre
- 9:44and Bobby Cox. Now, I don't know if that's true
- 9:47now, that was 1999 when they told me that.
- 9:49But I always thought of myself as among a great set of pass,
- 9:55you know, like a great cast of guys that had done that in the
- 9:58past and thought of myself and somebody that that had had to do
- 10:05whatever he had to do to survive early on.
- 10:08We are talking to former Expos, Cubs, Padres and Blue Jays
- 10:11catcher Michael Barrett. No, Michael, the Blue Jays have
- 10:16never had such an opportunity to win a World Series since.
- 10:20I remember Joe Carter, 93. I think it was 9394.
- 10:24They had a chance this year. They were up.
- 10:26They were against the deferred Dodgers and everybody thought
- 10:30that they were going to pull away.
- 10:31They have some good young pitching and they timely
- 10:34hitting. Vladimir Guerrero junior became
- 10:36a superstar right in front of her eyes in the playoffs.
- 10:39What stood out to you from the 9394 World Series champion Blue
- 10:45Jays to this team? Do you see any comparison
- 10:47between both of them? Yeah, it's a great question.
- 10:50I, you know, I fell in love. I mean, Vladdy Junior was in our
- 10:54clubhouse. I mean, like he was a part of
- 10:57our family, you know, I had a chance to watch him.
- 11:00But as a player, it's different, right?
- 11:02I can look at him as a player and, and separate the difference
- 11:06between him being in our clubhouse as a family member
- 11:08versus a player. And I I agree with you this
- 11:12World Series, his showing and what he did as a player.
- 11:16Well, definitely, I will never forget the the mark he made this
- 11:22series. It's a shame that he didn't come
- 11:24a come out as the winner of that series.
- 11:26But in so many ways he did an amazing job, just an amazing
- 11:31job. He really stood out to me as a
- 11:34player and as a hitter more than anything against some top notch
- 11:38pitchers. That was what was most
- 11:40impressive is that when everybody else had all the
- 11:42excuses in the world to not, you know, be the offensive threat
- 11:46that they are, he showed up and just did a remark and and I'll
- 11:50always stick with me. But I'll tell you this.
- 11:54In addition to that, I I think Snyder did AI think the manager
- 11:58Snyder did an unbelievable job all year long.
- 12:02I love the attention that they they paid, the detail of playing
- 12:07the smaller game throughout the season.
- 12:09I love that they cut down on strikeouts as a team.
- 12:12I love that they made that important.
- 12:14I love that putting the ball in play became something of
- 12:18importance and that people are talking about it again, that
- 12:21gets me fired up as a baseball guy, that people are talking
- 12:25about putting the ball in play and the portents and putting the
- 12:27ball in play with two strikes. And the Blue Jays are a great
- 12:30example of a team that did that. Michael, do you like when, when
- 12:36you look at the state of the game and, and kind of where the
- 12:40direction that it's going in and, and how we've seen it
- 12:43change? And in a lot of ways, I think
- 12:47in, in good, in a lot of ways where I think necessarily wasn't
- 12:51enough or it was maybe too much in, in the way that you see it.
- 12:56What do you think the game's direction is?
- 12:58Do you think it's it's for the positive in more ways than it is
- 13:02in the negative right now? Yeah, another great question.
- 13:06So I have 8:00 kids, blended family, but I have 8:00 kids and
- 13:11I I constantly, yeah, thank you. I'm constantly in the schools
- 13:15helping with different things. And this is a this is a this is
- 13:20a real truth, OK. And baseball fans need to know
- 13:24this. I'm in Atlanta, just outside of
- 13:26Atlanta, Big Braves country, right?
- 13:29Braves country. Acunia couldn't be more popular.
- 13:33It's exciting for me to see that.
- 13:35It's exciting to see kids wearing Acunia like I wore Del
- 13:39Murphy shirts. I love it, Absolutely love it.
- 13:42Here's the thing that you'd be surprised.
- 13:44A lot of people may not be surprised to hear about in my
- 13:48hometown, you go to my local elementary school where my kids
- 13:53go, you will see as many Savannah banana shirts as you
- 13:57see Acuna shirts. OK, we've we've got to stop and
- 14:03think about that for a second as baseball fans.
- 14:05OK, Now as great as that is, because if you're a baseball nut
- 14:10like me, you don't care. You just want kids in a stadium
- 14:14somewhere. Watch and learn a baseball.
- 14:16Yeah, it's just learning how to throw strikes over the plate.
- 14:18I don't care if it's standing on top of your head, just learn to
- 14:22throw the ball over the plate. The Bananas are teaching kids
- 14:24how to do that and do that, having fun at the same time, you
- 14:27know? So like, there's some
- 14:29competition that's happening now with MLB.
- 14:31Some of that's because of some decisions that we've made as
- 14:36players, some decisions that we've made as baseball people,
- 14:40right? So like we have to live with
- 14:43that. And if we're not careful, we're
- 14:44going to lose a lot of fans. I had a one last thing and I'll
- 14:48let you guys take it and run with it how you want.
- 14:51I had a 17 you baseball team that I was the head coach of a
- 14:54few years ago, and one day it hit me.
- 14:57I thought, I thought, I thought to myself, you know what, I'm,
- 15:01I'm just going to see what these guys do.
- 15:02You know, clearly I'm at the elementary schools.
- 15:05The impact that the Savannah bananas they're having, we now
- 15:08have more Savannah banana shirts than we have Acuna shirts, which
- 15:12is unimaginable to me, but at the same time, OK, that's great,
- 15:15whatever. So my 17 new team, I said, OK,
- 15:18guys, we're going to have a Savannah Savannah banana tryout
- 15:22day just for fun. This was like a year and a half
- 15:25ago. We're going to do a Savannah
- 15:26Banana tryout workout. And I kid you not, when I
- 15:31brought that up, kids started getting dirty again.
- 15:34They started laying out, they started diving for balls, doing
- 15:38360, doing things that I never imagined in a million years that
- 15:43they could ever do. And it's because it's because of
- 15:46the culture that we are building, if that makes sense.
- 15:51It's a, it's a cultural thing. And the kids are going to
- 15:54gravitate toward a culture that's more fun.
- 15:58Why wouldn't they? So I want to ask about one of
- 16:00your teammates, that guy that was a fun personality and when
- 16:03he was with the Yankees and the Mets.
- 16:04But you play with him on the Expo.
- 16:05That is Bartolo Cologne. You have a good Bartolo Cologne
- 16:07story. Oh the best Bartolo Cologne
- 16:11story. So Bartolo, he won 10 games in
- 16:14the American League and got traded to us.
- 16:17He was maybe 2 pitchers that have ever done that and I had
- 16:20the opportunity to catch him that year and that was amazing.
- 16:22We are talking to former Expos Cubs, Padres and Blue Jays
- 16:26catcher Michael Barrett. I remember Mike with the Expos.
- 16:32I remember him very, very well. And and it's crazy because I got
- 16:35a chance to check out the Expos documentary on Netflix and it's
- 16:40a great, very well put documentary.
- 16:42And you got a chance to see all the great players that played
- 16:46for those Expos teams and at the Expos.
- 16:50If you look at where the Expos transitioned from Washington,
- 16:54all the players that got traded, I mean Wetland went to the
- 16:57Yankees and won a World Series with the Yankees in in 959696
- 17:03when they won the first World Series title with the young
- 17:05Derek Jeter at Wetland was a part of that expose to Dawson,
- 17:10Pedro Martinez. I remembered all those players
- 17:13and Vladimir Guerrero was the one that really stuck out to me
- 17:15and Bartolo Cologne was a part of that team.
- 17:20Randy Johnson. Was on that squad, that squad.
- 17:22How many Hall of Farmers were a part of that Expose team?
- 17:26I mean, it's it's ridiculous. Could you imagine if those
- 17:29Expose team stayed together and how many championships they
- 17:32would have won with all the players in the Pedro Martinez
- 17:35was a baby when he at the tail end of the Expo's existence.
- 17:39And we saw what he did with the Boston Red Sox and his
- 17:43achievements as one of the best power pitchers, right-handed
- 17:45power pitchers we've ever seen. So by the way, he's back.
- 17:49We are talking to former Expos Cubs, Padres Blue Jays catcher
- 17:53Michael Barrett. Mike you you look at the league
- 17:56now and we're looking at these these stars and you played for
- 18:01the Padres. They've got a bunch of young
- 18:03stars, the Cubs who have a bunch of young stars and then
- 18:06obviously, obviously the Blue Jays.
- 18:07We all know who their young stars are.
- 18:10Is there a particular team that you see up and coming with some
- 18:14of the young talent that they have?
- 18:16We all know the Pirates always have young talent and they trade
- 18:19them away as there's one player that's not very happy over there
- 18:22who wants to be a Yankee. Is there a particular team right
- 18:26now that really stands out to you with the young talent that
- 18:28they have that you could you could see being a dynasty in the
- 18:32future or a multi championship type of team in the future?
- 18:37Yeah, right. Now, I really like what the
- 18:40Orioles, like I said earlier, I love what they're doing, a
- 18:43chance to meet a lot of their minor league staff a few years
- 18:48ago. And and I just just listening to
- 18:50what they're they're doing and watching some of the things and
- 18:53love what the Orioles are doing. I think that they have a chance
- 18:56to really, I know that they kind of, I don't know, it's kind of
- 18:59like a flip the coin or like 180 did a 180 kind of took a few
- 19:03steps back, but I think they'll turn it back around here pretty
- 19:05soon. I think the polar bear is a huge
- 19:08pick up. I think some of that veteran
- 19:09leadership for some of those young players is big.
- 19:13So I think I think watch some of those moves, you know, I think
- 19:16that's going to tell you what what the the experts are
- 19:20thinking. Like, you know, when when Sonny
- 19:22Gray goes to the Red Sox, I believe that was a trade that
- 19:26just went through. You know, it's like they start
- 19:28bringing in some of these veterans that to help some of
- 19:31these younger players. I think I think those are moves
- 19:33that are that are precise, that are done precisely for the
- 19:37reasons that we're talking about building dynasties, you know?
- 19:40Yeah, you. Mentioned and, and you mentioned
- 19:42the polar bear and you look at the Mets and a lot of, a lot of
- 19:45Met fans are really upset about obviously what David Stearns has
- 19:49done and, and the organization look like they were up to win a
- 19:53championship. They, they spent the money for
- 19:55Soto. They made all these moves.
- 19:57Lindor's there. They have all this young or
- 19:59superstar talent over there. And then in the offseason they
- 20:02have Edwin Diaz. They had a chance to extend him.
- 20:05They let him go to the Dodgers if they, I believe, gave him at
- 20:08least maybe 7 or $8 million more, maybe stays a Met.
- 20:12And then they didn't really even give an offer to Pete Alonso.
- 20:15They let Pete Alonso practically go.
- 20:17They had no really no thought in their minds to giving Pete
- 20:21Alonso an extension because there was nothing there.
- 20:24And he goes, everybody thought he was going to get $200
- 20:27million. Instead he takes what, what,
- 20:29five $6 million more than Schwarber and he goes over there
- 20:33to the Orioles, to a team that actually wanted them.
- 20:35Are you surprised that the New York Mets and Steve Cohen, who
- 20:38spent billions already over a billion dollars on players, just
- 20:41let a home grown player like that of that magnitude away and
- 20:45then let Edwin Diaz? The one weakness the Dodgers
- 20:47have had over the last two seasons is relief pitching and
- 20:50they let the best relief pitcher go to the Dodgers and pretty
- 20:53much say here you go, Dodgers win another one.
- 20:55Are are you surprised that the Mets obviously didn't step in
- 20:59and do anything to save or keep these players there?
- 21:02Yeah, I think. You know, they have such a, a, a
- 21:05like closer, you know, closer tabs on every little thing that
- 21:12these players do or like, like, you know, that we did as
- 21:16players. It's like they know every little
- 21:18thing about us. They know what we wake up and
- 21:21what we like to eat, what we don't like to eat.
- 21:23I know it was difficult for Mets fans and rightfully so, but I
- 21:27got to imagine that that the Mets have a plan to fill those
- 21:31gaps. They have to.
- 21:33And if it's not in the next year, it's going to be years to
- 21:37come. You know, I think, and I'm just
- 21:40being honest here, being trans, like completely transparent with
- 21:43you guys. Like the biggest thing for me is
- 21:45like people, they've been talking about a work stoppage.
- 21:48They've been talking about a bunch of stuff, which also may
- 21:52have an effect on why these guys aren't signing.
- 21:55And I don't mean to to scare people, but that's the reality
- 21:57is these are things, these are real conversations.
- 22:01You know, why would any owner of any club want to spend that much
- 22:05money if there's a work stoppage, you know, like that
- 22:09what you know, like that's baseball that's talking.
- 22:12That's not us talking. That's baseball fans in general.
- 22:15That's every hot stove in America is talking right now,
- 22:18work stoppage or not. Well, that that could have an
- 22:20effect on whether or not you spend $150 million, two $100
- 22:24million, I don't know. But I would say this, that it,
- 22:28that it's, it's hard to see those guys leave the New York
- 22:31Mets organization. I'm a big Juan Soto fan.
- 22:34Would love to see Juan Soto win a World Series with New York
- 22:36Mets very, very soon. Is it going to happen without
- 22:40those guys? I don't.
- 22:41I've seen crazier things. We've seen crazier things.
- 22:45You know, the Mets could pull it off probably without those guys.
- 22:50I don't know. It would be nice.
- 22:51It would have been nice to see those guys in on the action and
- 22:54in on the fun. But, you know, the Mets have
- 22:57something up their sleeve. They got something.
- 22:59But it's at the same time, you know, it's nice to see that the
- 23:02Dodgers are not stopping. They're going to keep rolling.
- 23:05They're going to keep investing. They don't care how many World
- 23:07Series they win. They're going to keep trying to
- 23:09win more. I love that We we, we need that
- 23:12in the game. We need that, that, that that
- 23:14team that's just going to continue to pour into its
- 23:17organization, pour money into. I mean, like, I love that.
- 23:20And then and then the Orioles, how many how many times have the
- 23:23Orioles gone out of their way to sign guys like the polar bear
- 23:28this offseason, like in their history?
- 23:30They're making a move. They're making a move That's
- 23:33awesome. I love to see that.
- 23:34You know, so I don't I I'm kind of a guy that that looks at the
- 23:37glass is half full all the time. I want to switch.
- 23:40Gears you, you as a catcher that took pride in what you did.
- 23:43And my son, now he's he's pitching in college.
- 23:46And what is your stance and what is your thought on this?
- 23:50I feel like it's lazy. I understand with the with the
- 23:52one knee down and why we're seeing more pass balls as
- 23:55catchers in the way that like it.
- 23:58It just for me, you're not in a in a more athletic stance with,
- 24:03with being down on one knee or putting.
- 24:06I mean, we obviously go back. We can go look at the Benito
- 24:08Santiagos and the Penas of of the what they were and how they
- 24:12were different. But now it feels like that's the
- 24:15standard and the old way of just catching and receiving and how
- 24:18how they value receiving in in what it is.
- 24:21But then I feel like there's some pitches getting taken away
- 24:25by just the way they're receiving the baseball being on
- 24:28one leg and not being as mobile left and right.
- 24:31And for me as a pitcher, if I know I can't bury A-12 back foot
- 24:35slider because he can't quite get there, then I'm kind of
- 24:38second guessing myself in that situation when that's my bread
- 24:41and butter. And I know I can go to it, but
- 24:44maybe I give up the guy that still gets on 1st and then
- 24:47extends an inning. And I just, it's it's
- 24:49interesting to me. And somebody of your caliber
- 24:51that's done it at the highest level and now gets to teach it.
- 24:54Do you teach it? If so, why or why not?
- 24:57Yeah, I. Definitely.
- 25:00So what I've kind of come up with is, you know, talking about
- 25:04like traditional stances, because that's, that's what
- 25:07they've become a a secondary stance is now like of 1980 to
- 25:121990s where your butts off the ground, all that stuff, though,
- 25:17that is what I call a traditional stance.
- 25:21Those it's outdated, it's obsolete.
- 25:23And a lot of in the minds of a lot of baseball people and, and
- 25:26it's because they analytics has put such an emphasis on
- 25:29receiving and stealing strikes. And my whole thing was and I,
- 25:33and I agree with you, I think, you know, depending on the age
- 25:37especially, and the, and the range of the catcher and the
- 25:41athleticism of the catcher, we're doing a disservice to kids
- 25:45by putting them on a knee when they're eight years old to let's
- 25:48say 15 to be exact. You know, like just as an
- 25:51example, in terms of player development, we're making a huge
- 25:55mistake saying you're 8 years old, ten years old, you're
- 25:57catching from a knee. That's happening, that's really
- 26:00happening. I'm seeing it happen.
- 26:01It's just disgusting. It's no good for the kids.
- 26:06And the reason why is, and I know this because we did kind of
- 26:09a case study when I was the catching guy with the Washington
- 26:12Nationals. First thing you see is when you
- 26:15see a kid on a knee, if he's on a knee too much, when he goes
- 26:18down to do anything else, he, he goes back to that muscle memory
- 26:22that he just created by catching on a knee.
- 26:26And, and it looks lazy, it looks careless, it looks awful.
- 26:30And that's that. But that's happening.
- 26:32And so we had to fight that. We had to get the kids to
- 26:34believe in these traditional stances and that that was the
- 26:38way to go. Because if there's an automatic
- 26:40ball and strike system coming, it doesn't matter how you catch
- 26:44it. But what's going to come, what
- 26:45what's going to become more important again, is how you're
- 26:49able to throw guys out and how you're able to block.
- 26:51And we proved when I was with the Washington Nationals, and
- 26:54this is a credit to the Washington Nationals, not me,
- 26:57but as a catching coordinator with the Washington Nationals.
- 26:59The Washington Nationals built a system that was able to analyze
- 27:05every ball that was blocked by every catcher in baseball, from
- 27:10in professional baseball, from a ball all the way up to the big
- 27:13leagues and all the way down, back down to the Dominican.
- 27:16They could analyze the range of every ball and we're able to
- 27:20quantify what balls should be blocked and what balls were OK
- 27:24to not block. And all of a sudden when they
- 27:28started to see those, those stats become the important
- 27:32factors that they are, it definitely weighed in on their
- 27:36decision with us, or at least when I was there, on whether or
- 27:39not we caught from one knee. And we fought that and we fought
- 27:43that because we care about the catchers.
- 27:46A lot of a lot of what you're seeing now is just an excuse to
- 27:50me, just an excuse. And it's no good excuse.
- 27:55So I want to ask like the. Impact of analytics in baseball
- 27:57because we've been a lot of guests on our show that have
- 27:59mentioned like the IT takes away from, like you mentioned with
- 28:02the catcher standpoint, but also like when you look at pitching
- 28:04Java, Java brings it up all the time.
- 28:06Like sometimes you do these advanced metrics, some of which
- 28:08you wish he had when he played and others that he didn't.
- 28:11Do you think that's, one, hurt the development of certain young
- 28:13players and two, also rose the injuries, the amount of injuries
- 28:16we've seen in baseball with arms and stuff like that?
- 28:20Yeah, I would go back and say this.
- 28:22If I had a catcher like Cal Raleigh and Cal Raleigh wanted
- 28:26to catch from a knee, it would be a different conversation
- 28:29because he's hitting seventy home runs and we want to keep
- 28:31this guy in the lineup. We're we want him to be super
- 28:34efficient with all of his movements.
- 28:37He's going to score this team. His war is going to be way
- 28:39better. And when he catches from a knee,
- 28:41he's he's recovers and he's able to catch.
- 28:44That's a different story, you know, than a guy that's marginal
- 28:49at the plate. He, he, he, you know, his wars
- 28:51and the two to three range to a -, 2 to 3 range, you know, in
- 28:55there, but he does a good job handling the staff.
- 28:58You know, it's a different, it's a different conversation for me,
- 29:01you know, in terms of especially player development.
- 29:04But I think, you know, along the, along the lines of just
- 29:08analytics in general. I, I am a big fan of a big
- 29:10proponent of it. I think that it goes back though
- 29:14to that, that paralysis by over analysis, the more information
- 29:18you have can be a detriment, especially the player
- 29:21development. I mean, some of the best players
- 29:23in the game and the history of the game were the best players
- 29:26in the game because they were C ball, hit ball.
- 29:29They didn't think about, you know, when a pitcher was
- 29:32pitching that 75% of the time he threw his change up in a one O
- 29:36count. That would have been helpful
- 29:37information. But I promise you there, there
- 29:40were players that had more success thinking less about all
- 29:47of that. We are.
- 29:48Talking to former Expos Cubs, Blue Jays catcher Michael Barry.
- 29:52I don't want to keep you on too long, Michael, because I want
- 29:54you to go and get a chance to check out your son.
- 29:56He's a senior playing basketball.
- 29:58I don't want to take that away from you, but one of our fans
- 30:00have a question for you on and I think it's a really, really good
- 30:03one. And I want to give a shout out
- 30:04to Shy Town for listening to us. He was a big cut.
- 30:09He's a big Cubs fan and he wants to know a little bit about the
- 30:12Cubs and White Sox rivalry. Is his name AJ?
- 30:17No. Yeah, I tell people.
- 30:22I was talking about it the other day.
- 30:24I was talking about we're coming up on the 20th year of that,
- 30:28that fight. And you know, when I talk about
- 30:31it, I feel like it just happened yesterday.
- 30:33It's very vivid in my mind and in my heart, my soul.
- 30:37It became such a part of me and just that rivalry and being a
- 30:42club member and I saw somebody other day, I don't remember, I
- 30:46don't remember. And, and I, I, I kid you not
- 30:49when I say this at, when in, in 2004 to 2007 and the time that I
- 30:55was a member of the Chicago Cubs, especially, especially
- 30:58when we were playing the White Sox at their place.
- 31:02I, I can't remember how many times and, or how many innings
- 31:07there wasn't a fight outside of the, the game.
- 31:11I can't remember how many times there wasn't a fight taking
- 31:14place. And it was, it was the energy,
- 31:16it was the, it was the atmosphere.
- 31:19It was intense. I know I can't imagine playing
- 31:22that game or playing against AJ. And I don't think AJ and I think
- 31:25AJ would say the same thing. I don't think AJ nor I could
- 31:29ever imagine playing in that series or playing in the game
- 31:33where we didn't think of knocking each other's heads off
- 31:37at any point in time because that was just the, that's just
- 31:39what it meant. That's what it meant to
- 31:41everybody. And and if you sat in the stands
- 31:44for one game, you had to have seen four or five fights break
- 31:49out at some point on an average, I will say.
- 31:52This there, there's one fight that really sticks out to me
- 31:55from all the rest, and that was the Alex Rodriguez, Pedro
- 32:01Martinez the the the just thought that the outbreak of Red
- 32:06Sox and Yankee fights that we've seen in from the from the years
- 32:11of 2000 to 2007, there was always something that was going
- 32:16to break with the Red Sox. Pedro Martinez couldn't stand
- 32:19the Yankees. Alex Rodriguez couldn't stand
- 32:21the Red Sox. Even though and I'm watching the
- 32:23Alex Rodriguez documentary right now which is fan friggin tastic
- 32:28if anybody hasn't checked in. It is.
- 32:30Awesome. It is so good.
- 32:32It really is well put by HBO. I, I got to say I, I'm on the
- 32:37second episode. I, I saw the first one today.
- 32:39It's really well put together, but you could see that a rod,
- 32:43the fact is, is a rod always wanted to be a Yankee.
- 32:45He was surprised that the Red Sox were going to make a move
- 32:48for him and then everything fell apart.
- 32:49He becomes a Yankee and we all know what happened after that.
- 32:53I mean, when you look at when you think of teams that couldn't
- 32:56stand each other, the Red Sox and the Yankees, the Chicago
- 32:59Cubs and the White Sox couldn't stand each other.
- 33:03I mean, I, I mean, you could go back on some of the teams that
- 33:05the fights that we seen the Dodgers, I think who was the
- 33:08Dodgers that couldn't stand and we saw the fights all the time.
- 33:11Is it the Dodgers and the Angels?
- 33:12Something I, I, I, I don't remember exactly, but it over
- 33:15the years, Valenzuela who, who did, who's the team that
- 33:19Valenzuela went? Oh man, the.
- 33:21Giants. The Giants.
- 33:22The Giants. Yes, the Dodgers.
- 33:25And San Francisco Giants couldn't stand each other.
- 33:27That's a bad one. I mean, that one goes way back I
- 33:30would say. I would say, you know, the the
- 33:32great thing, I shouldn't say the great thing.
- 33:33I mean, I don't condone fighting, OK, But I I think that
- 33:37like if anybody thought that that wasn't in a rod, he proved
- 33:42they were wrong. He proved he one of the greatest
- 33:45players. I don't care whatever anybody
- 33:47says, he is one of the greatest players ever play the game and
- 33:51he was one of the most cool elected players to ever play the
- 33:55game and that series got to him anytime anytime you you you
- 33:59throw down your back, you look at the picture, you stare at
- 34:01him, you point at him, you go to fight him and then Veritech gets
- 34:04in your face. That's a that that means that
- 34:08some element of the game got to you, right?
- 34:11And he was one of the best players of all time to me.
- 34:16And proof right there that anything at any point in time in
- 34:22those series can bring the worst out of some of the best in US.
- 34:26Michael before, but Michael. Before we let you go, I want to
- 34:29say something. There is a particular player
- 34:31that Jabba Chamberlain couldn't stand.
- 34:33He played with Jabba Chamberlain.
- 34:35He played with the Red Sox. Could you guess that player that
- 34:39Jabba couldn't stand? Well, I know.
- 34:41AJ was a member of the Red Sox. I don't know if that's the one.
- 34:44Is that the one? Does that count?
- 34:45No, no, I'm going. To give you I'm going to give
- 34:46you a hint. His first name starts.
- 34:48You need a hint? Let me get.
- 34:49You going to give me this chance?
- 34:50Yeah. So I'm going to give you a.
- 34:51Chance. OK, here I'm going to give you a
- 34:53hint. OK, All right, here's it.
- 34:56His brother-in-law is a famous player in the NFL.
- 34:59Was a famous player in the NFL. Wow.
- 35:02I'll give you a hint. Again, I'll give you another
- 35:04one, I feel. Like I'm letting Java down right
- 35:06now, I'll give you another. Hint.
- 35:08I'll give you another hint. He's one of the greatest players
- 35:11at his position in NFL history. Oh my gosh.
- 35:14Why am I drawing a blank right now?
- 35:16I'll give you another. Hint.
- 35:17He also played in Boston. Oh man.
- 35:22I'll give you one that might help.
- 35:25OK, go ahead. He had a.
- 35:26Weird batting scan. Oh man, that.
- 35:28That narrows it down. Oh, man.
- 35:32You're gonna have to tell me who it is.
- 35:33All right, hold on. He.
- 35:34Likes to play with himself. Oh my gosh, there's a lot of
- 35:40those guys like that, all right. OK, his first name starts with
- 35:46AK and his last name starts with AY.
- 35:51Is that Euclid? That's right.
- 35:53Oh my. Gosh, I can't believe I I, I was
- 35:57thinking Bevin Euclid, but I was like, I honestly didn't know he
- 36:00had a brother-in-law in the NFL. Yes, Tom.
- 36:03Brady Tom Brady. Tom Brady is his brother-in-law.
- 36:05Oh my gosh, I. Had no idea.
- 36:07Like that's how stupid I am. No, you're not stupid.
- 36:09Michael, But I got basketball. In the brain all day today I got
- 36:12an excuse. I've watched 3 high school
- 36:14basketball games. I'm done.
- 36:16Go take care of. Your go take care of your son.
- 36:19I don't want to keep you for from that and let's get you on
- 36:22now. He's good.
- 36:22You got told about his problems coming on the line.
- 36:24I was like, we're going to give you a shout out.
- 36:26He was so excited. I I want to say something.
- 36:30We're good. I want to.
- 36:31I want. To get you on the show again,
- 36:34let's get you stationed and I would love to get you on the
- 36:37show. You have tremendous, You have a
- 36:38bunch of tremendous stories and Jabba's an ex pitcher and you're
- 36:43an ex catcher. I'm sure you guys have, you
- 36:46know, back and forth banter when it comes to, you know, pitching
- 36:49styles and catching styles and, and, and, and I'm sure we can
- 36:53get into stories that you have from all the years that you
- 36:55played. And by the way, I, I've looked
- 36:57at your numbers against some of the best pitchers in baseball.
- 37:00They are pretty ridiculous. Shabba is right.
- 37:02You, you are pretty good against some good pitchers.
- 37:06So I, I'm not going to lie, I'm looking, I've been looking at
- 37:09some of the guys that you've hit very well against.
- 37:11It's it's pretty amazing, man, but well, I appreciate.
- 37:15It that's very flattering and I definitely would love to come
- 37:18back home, especially when you guys can see me and I'm not like
- 37:21the kid from 6th Sense, like I see dead people.
- 37:27But you're great. And by the way, we we really
- 37:32appreciate you joining us because sometimes, you know, you
- 37:35have all this stuff to do. You have family and all that
- 37:38other stuff. The fact that you came and you
- 37:40you did it in your car, because we we're known for interviewing
- 37:44people in their cars. Jabba made a joke about it.
- 37:46We're known on a show that it seems like we get guys and
- 37:51they're they're either at a family, you know, family thing,
- 37:56or they're at a basketball game, football game or something and
- 37:59they come on the show. But we, the fact that you came
- 38:02on the show and you gave us a really good interview.
- 38:04He told us a load of stories that we can use and cut up and
- 38:07chop up. We really appreciate it.
- 38:09And I'm going to have Nathan reach out to you and I'll have
- 38:13Nathan give the information to Speedy and Speedy will work out
- 38:16another date to get you on and we'll talk a little bit more
- 38:19ball with you. And yeah, let's do it.
- 38:21Have a lot of fun with. You man, how's that?
- 38:24Appreciate you guys, thanks for having me on the show y'all.
- 38:26Have a wonderful night and happy holidays and happy New Year.
- 38:31If I don't see you, same to you, same to you.
- 38:33Man and happy Hanukkah to all the fans out there.
- 38:36Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Hanukkah, Yes.
- 38:38Merry Christmas. Happy Kwanzaa.
- 38:40Yes and Merry Christmas. Everything and and make sure.
- 38:43That you keep some of that money in your pocket, if you know what
- 38:47I mean. So.
- 38:50Mike, tell your son I hope he balls out today from us.
- 38:53Oh yeah. Appreciate it.
- 38:55You got it. Thanks, Mike.
- 38:57Michael, All right. Barrett Ladies.
- 38:59And gentlemen, he was sensational.
- 39:01Let's go to our Savior Tears Week 15 recap.
- 39:05Mom, what's one thing? That you can't talk to me about
- 39:09my sexual fantasies? No, say your sorry.
- 39:14It is not ideal, but if it's what it is, not ideal, but if
- 39:16it's. This is not ideal.
- 39:18But if it is what we you can't. Treble stamp a double stamp.
- 39:21You can't treble stamp a double stamp.
- 39:22Lloyd you can't treble stamp a double stamp.
- 39:24Lloyd, you guys, now it's time for save your tears.
- 39:33All. Right, Save your tears.
- 39:35Recap for Week 15. Another great game.
- 39:40Let's take a look at who we were picking from on the board.
- 39:45Again, it was a loaded quarterback class, but Joe
- 39:48Burrow scored no points in the Bengal land.
- 39:53What a disaster for anyone who picked him.
- 39:55A couple of people did. I'm on Ross St.
- 39:56Brown had one of the best weeks of anyone ever this year, so
- 40:01Congrats to Pearson to pick. I'm on Rod Jamar, Chase, the
- 40:05Puka, Nakua, all stand out performances.
- 40:07Gibbs was taken by a bunch of guys, didn't do much.
- 40:10Same thing with Derrick Henry, Tyrone Tracy.
- 40:13Big game for the Giants. Colby Parkinson was the standout
- 40:17tight end this week. Mark Andrews kind of
- 40:19disappearing even though $5 player Devante Adams got hurt.
- 40:23T Higgins. Did not.
- 40:25Play in this game. So if you took Higgins, you got
- 40:30bupkis. I actually decided to give you
- 40:32the other Higgins. I gave Jaden.
- 40:34I saw Jaden Higgins was out there, so I just said we'll give
- 40:37you some Higgins points. Yeah, that he only.
- 40:39Got 1.4 points to help you win fish.
- 40:42Fish one. Well, it's me in the.
- 40:44Playoffs. I'm talking.
- 40:46About that, what are you talking about?
- 40:49Speedy is just. Jealous that I'm moving on to
- 40:51the next round in our show league playoffs to face Errol,
- 40:55by the way, in a square in a rematch of early season that
- 40:58went over like a drubbing that I took.
- 41:00All right, who's see who the winner was this time?
- 41:03And the winner is yes, once again, speedy PD is our
- 41:06champion. One O 8.2, the highest point
- 41:10total, I believe this season or close to it.
- 41:14Big games from Parkinson, Jameson Williams had a monster
- 41:17game. Everyone did in that game.
- 41:19Pokémon Nakua. Not much out of Lamar, but you
- 41:23know, there really wasn't much to compete with at the
- 41:25quarterback position. Jackson Dart had a good game
- 41:28fantasy wise. Seems to always do that.
- 41:31That's something to think about going into next year's drafts,
- 41:33everybody. Jared Goff was the leading point
- 41:35getter there. I don't know, but Nathan, let me
- 41:37know you. You, you mentioned, you
- 41:39mentioned Jackson Dart, but I, I'm going to tell you guys, all
- 41:42the fans out there, Nathan, shut off whatever's behind you
- 41:45because there's a big sound in the back.
- 41:47I, I will say this and I, I went back and I said it again.
- 41:50I'll say it again, like the beginning of the show, don't be
- 41:53surprised if the Giants are sitting there.
- 41:55Errol, we're going to literally do a segment all about that
- 41:58next. Let's go.
- 41:59So all right, let's just keep that.
- 42:02Stay away from that. Let's listen, Dart.
- 42:04Dart's having a good one. I got third place because I took
- 42:07Dart and I got second. Wonderful.
- 42:09And you got. 2nd place with Amman Ross, St.
- 42:12Brown and Jamar Chase leading the way.
- 42:14So this is how it goes. Let's get the compliments out,
- 42:17starting with Tommy. Oops.
- 42:20Wow. I I.
- 42:22Did pathetic wow, just straight up 50, but I had to take a shit
- 42:26all right, Basically speedy. Men, you know, I, I remember I'm
- 42:30not giving him any compliments today because he knows why I I'm
- 42:34not giving him any compliments today.
- 42:36So, all right, Speedy I, I was in somewhat of a pedestal being
- 42:41back top three back-to-back weeks.
- 42:44Pretty. Often, honestly, but Speedy, you
- 42:46were the man and you were the one that does not.
- 42:48You were the constant, does not the tier from the top three or
- 42:52either one or two, mostly one as of recent weeks.
- 42:56So, yeah, good job, Speedy. All right, Nith.
- 43:01You're up next. All right, what's up?
- 43:03Everyone but speedy Congrats on another.
- 43:05OK, jobless, but speedy. Congrats on another win.
- 43:11As always. You're a great producer.
- 43:14You do a great job on everything.
- 43:16What you do, maybe you make some mistakes, but you're so good.
- 43:20You're amazing. You're the best.
- 43:22Keep it up, sweetie. Great working with you.
- 43:25So that's it. All right, Jabba.
- 43:29Really, like I said, you are, you are the epitome of what we
- 43:33try to follow and the way you do things and it does never fail
- 43:38you. You sometimes fall off the
- 43:39horse, but you always get back on and, and as we've seen, you
- 43:42did it again with the highest point total.
- 43:44So we shouldn't be surprised and we should all follow lead.
- 43:47That's why if we had somebody else ever wins, they make sure
- 43:50you go 1st and piggyback off you because your your picks are
- 43:55always very quick and you already have them and then it
- 43:58usually ends up working out. And so we need to follow your
- 44:01lead a little bit more. All right, I am next on this one
- 44:08Speedy. You know, professionally, I work
- 44:12with special needs students in high school setting and very
- 44:17often through no fault of effort, we make mistakes.
- 44:24You don't make mistakes on Save Your Tears.
- 44:25You're going to, I think you're all but clinching it this week.
- 44:29If you can get one more point, I think you have it clinched
- 44:32unless Nathan can make a comeback in the last couple of
- 44:35weeks. But you do a great job with all
- 44:38the stuff on the show. It's just sometimes we make
- 44:40mistakes. We just got to.
- 44:42Move forwards, fix them, make sure we don't make the same
- 44:45mistakes over and over and over again and just get better.
- 44:49And I know you can do that. And that's what really the
- 44:51message is just try to get better every day.
- 44:54You're already the top of your game on savior to your stuff on.
- 44:57Saturday night, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza won
- 45:01the 2025 Heisman Trophy, which by the way, I was there the
- 45:05first Indiana player to ever win the nation's top prize in
- 45:10college football. Mendoza also became the first
- 45:13Cuban American to win the Heisman and just the third
- 45:16player of Latin American descent to win after Jim Plunkett and
- 45:22Bryce Young. Oh, what a what a couple over
- 45:25there. Mendoza won in a blowout with
- 45:292362 total points and 643 first place votes, almost 1000 more
- 45:37points and and over 400 more first place votes than the
- 45:41second place finisher, Vanderbilt quarterback Diego
- 45:45Pavia, who by the way, was bitching and moaning.
- 45:47Pavia finished in second with Notre Dame running back Jeremiah
- 45:52Love in 3rd and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin in
- 45:57fourth. Pavia had now deleted Instagram
- 46:01his Instagram story that said F all the voters but then
- 46:05apologize the next day saying he didn't handle his emotions well
- 46:11and he should be honored being named as a finalist.
- 46:16Mendoza has also won the Davey O'Brien most outstanding
- 46:22quarterback award, the Maxwell Award for most outstanding
- 46:26player and the Associate Press player of the year.
- 46:29Mendoza had 2980 passing yards and a college football best 33
- 46:35passing touchdowns while also adding 240 rushing yards and six
- 46:42rushing touchdowns. Who by the way, everybody says
- 46:44he's a pocket present quarterback.
- 46:46He is not even a mobile quarterback.
- 46:48But when you look at those numbers, I, I, I don't think you
- 46:50could really attack that He has some mobility.
- 46:55I was there and I put out a story on the Worldwide Sports
- 46:58Radio Network. It's I, I put it very well put
- 47:01together. I mean, Fish reached out to me
- 47:04and said this is one of my best stories because I, I was there
- 47:07and I can kind of give you the feedback on everything that
- 47:10happened during the media session and the award show.
- 47:15So it was fun being a part of that.
- 47:18And it's also fun to be a part of it because Mendoza, a lot of
- 47:22the media people that were there really believe that Mendoza
- 47:26could be a Giant or a Jet. Now, I know a lot of Giant fans
- 47:32sitting there saying, we got Jackson Thart, what do we need?
- 47:35Fernando Mendoza? Well, there's a lot of reasons
- 47:38why I think Fernando Mendoza would be a great fit for the
- 47:41Giants as well as an outstanding fit for the New York, NY Jets.
- 47:46He's very good when it comes to the media.
- 47:49He understands how to speak. He understands the type of
- 47:52player he can be here in New York, even winning the award,
- 47:57ladies and gentlemen, he went out and celebrated it in in
- 48:00front of all the New York fans at Times Square.
- 48:03I've never and I've been to this is the second award, but I've
- 48:07never heard a player go out with the trophy and go into Times
- 48:12Square and celebrate it with all the fans out there where listen
- 48:16it. It's dangerous.
- 48:18And all the players surrounding him and all the fans surrounding
- 48:22taking pictures and screaming JETS, jets, jets, Jets.
- 48:26I mean, it was a remarkable time to just see such a legitimate
- 48:31superstar here in New York and might be an as a fan be the
- 48:39opportunity to land a player of this magnitude would really
- 48:43change the New York Jets organization and maybe even the
- 48:46New York Giants organization. The blow out, you know, and I I
- 48:50got the numbers, I got the after the announcement.
- 48:54If you're in the media room, they give you all the numbers
- 48:57where and how many votes and I can get you the numbers on
- 49:01Southwest, northeast on where the votes were coming from and
- 49:05how bad he dominated when he came to the voting.
- 49:08And he just absolutely dominated when he was Vegas said it was a
- 49:14-, 2000 or 2100 when before the award show, I there was no doubt
- 49:20in my mind Mendoza was going to win.
- 49:24The fact that and I'm I'm Diego, I I'm surprised that you
- 49:27actually thought you had a chance.
- 49:29And Pavia had a great season. There's no question what he did
- 49:32with Vanderbilt is outstanding. Vanderbilt has never been ranked
- 49:35so high. Vanderbilt has not ever looked
- 49:38as good. He is sensational.
- 49:40He looked so good and so and it remember this guy is he's not a
- 49:44big quarterback. He doesn't have that the arm
- 49:48strength like you know, Mendoza does or the accuracy like
- 49:51Mendoza does or even Sayin and Julian.
- 49:54Sayin is going to be here at least two more times.
- 49:57Sayin is going to win a Heisman Trophy.
- 49:58I promise you guys that or you Ohio State Buckeye fans, this
- 50:02man is going to win a Heisman Trophy.
- 50:04He's a pretty boy. I I think anybody, any of the
- 50:08women that were there, all the media women that were there,
- 50:11they flocked to this guy. They flocked to say it.
- 50:15There's no question. And Jeremiah love, I love his
- 50:17speech. I, I wouldn't be surprised The
- 50:19Jets sitting at 13, Jeremiah love if The Jets move up to get
- 50:24Mendoza and then draft Jeremiah love.
- 50:27These guys love each other. They were sitting right next to
- 50:30each other, giving all the compliments back and forth with
- 50:32one another. And, and I felt bad for Jeremiah
- 50:35Love because this man should be in the Football Playoff.
- 50:40I didn't ask him that question because I didn't want to.
- 50:42This is supposed to be a fun time and an exciting time.
- 50:45I didn't want to piss the man off, but I would be pissed off
- 50:49knowing that. Besides, you know, Pavia
- 50:52Vanderpol missed, missed the playoffs by a little bit.
- 50:55But Ohio State and Indiana going into the playoffs and Notre Dame
- 50:59was, I would think, just as good as both those teams all season
- 51:04long. They should be there.
- 51:06They should be challenging Ohio State or Indiana in this big,
- 51:11this Football Playoff, but it didn't happen.
- 51:14But I, I love the fact that a lot of the media people didn't
- 51:20just look at the New York Jets as a spot, a landing spot for a
- 51:25guy like Mendoza. A lot of the giant media people
- 51:28think that depending on if Joe Shane's there or he's not, If
- 51:31Joe Shane's not there and there's a new GM there and
- 51:34there's going to be a new coach, they might think that Jackson
- 51:37Dart is an injury prone player or he's going to put himself in
- 51:40harm's way. And they feel that Mendoza is a
- 51:42better fit for their future and, and and really a quarterback
- 51:47that they could build their roster around.
- 51:49Because to me, he was, is everything you want in a New
- 51:53York quarterback Now, I don't know how it's going to work
- 51:55here. I don't know if he's going to
- 51:57handle the New York the New York crowds.
- 51:59And, and we've seen quarterback after quarterback for the New
- 52:02York Jets get drafted and they fall apart.
- 52:05Sam Donald, he didn't work here, but he's in Seattle doing well.
- 52:08In Minnesota, he did well. I mean, Geno Smith, he leaves
- 52:11here, he goes, he backs up Eli Manning, takes over Eli
- 52:14Manning's job with Ben McAdoo. And then he goes over there to
- 52:19Seattle and and he was up for an MVP one year.
- 52:22So I mean, Geno Smith developed after the fact.
- 52:25Mark Sanchez, he had two years, 2 good years with The Jets and
- 52:29then he's the butt fumble is what everybody remembers him
- 52:32from. Christian Hackenberg, a boss,
- 52:34Brownie Nagle, a bust. I could go on and on and on.
- 52:37So I but I never saw the, the personality this kid holds the
- 52:42crying, the, the, the electrifying personality is with
- 52:48his his fan base and his friends, everybody.
- 52:52I don't know if anybody understands this.
- 52:55Every single one of his team mates showed up to this award
- 53:00show and when they were in it to the media room and and Nathan, I
- 53:04want you to. I don't know who's there's a
- 53:05sound. Oh, it's not nothing, but I when
- 53:09the award show was unique because after that they came in
- 53:13and they came in 10 minutes before Mendoza came in.
- 53:17And I knew that as soon as Mendota Doza walked into that
- 53:20double door, these guys were going to go nuts.
- 53:23And when he walked through the door, they went crazy.
- 53:27They picked him up. Honestly.
- 53:30Anybody seen the movie Rudy? If anybody seen the movie Rudy,
- 53:34he's to me, Joe Montana said this never happened, by the way.
- 53:39And, and if anybody seen the 49 years documentary, Joe Montana
- 53:43said that Rudy was never carried off the field and he was.
- 53:47So I don't know if it's true or not, but Joe Montana said it's
- 53:50not. But if you watch the movie, Rudy
- 53:52Rudiger gets carried off the field and and and that's, that's
- 53:56the way ever all the fans going crazy.
- 53:59This man got practically picked up by his offensive line.
- 54:03And this guy, this guy is not a small man.
- 54:05He's 6364. He's a big man.
- 54:08And these guys had him off the ground and they were going
- 54:11crazy. His offensive line, his two off
- 54:14tackles had him up in the air and they were like lifting him
- 54:17up like he was at a bar mitzvah, OK?
- 54:20It was unbelievable. It was fun to watch.
- 54:23And I'm going to tell you guys this one, one time and one time
- 54:27only. No matter where this guy's go,
- 54:29this guy goes Las Vegas, the Giants, the Saints, anywhere
- 54:36this guy's go, this guy goes. This guy is a superstar.
- 54:40He is the closest thing to me to Joe Burrow.
- 54:43He's got that that ice feeling. You know how they called Maddie
- 54:47ice when the big when, when the big times, when the important
- 54:51times in a game happens, he makes the biggest plays.
- 54:54This guy doesn't have to put up to hundred 300 yards.
- 54:57This guy can throw 150 yards in a game.
- 55:00And at the end of the game, when he needs to make a play, this
- 55:02guy makes the play. He makes the right play.
- 55:04His coach was there. His coach spoke and the media
- 55:07asked him and said, what makes this kid different from all the
- 55:09rest? What do you see in this kid that
- 55:12you don't see in other quarterbacks that you've seen
- 55:15that have won this award? And he says this guy, no matter
- 55:19how big the game is, how, what, how many, how much time is left
- 55:24on the clock when a play needs to happen, this guy finds a way
- 55:27to make the plays. And that's to me is a sign of a
- 55:31superstar and and a franchise quarterback.
- 55:34That's what he said and I believe it.
- 55:36There was nothing I saw in this guy so kind collective.
- 55:40He spoke to the media so very well.
- 55:42I was up in front with him and every question I asked him, I
- 55:47asked him, I said my question, my big question to him, it was
- 55:51if you were recruiting, if if, if somebody, if your coach asked
- 55:54you to help recruit one of the biggest prospects or one of the
- 55:57biggest quarterback prospects in the country for IU, how would
- 56:02you go upon reaching out to this kid and pitching IU and their
- 56:08program to this, this this kid? And he said the proof's in the
- 56:11pudding. Anybody that's seen me play
- 56:14college football, anybody see me when I came from the portal and
- 56:18anybody see me as a development developmental quarterback when I
- 56:23came from where I came to Indiana, you would know that I I
- 56:28am not the same quarterback I was when I came to Indiana.
- 56:31And you look at the look at the player I've become and he says
- 56:34this is a family here. And he says nobody's bigger than
- 56:38the other player. And he said this Heisman Trophy
- 56:41that I won today is not because of me, it's because everybody,
- 56:46my teammates, my coaches, everybody around me helped me
- 56:50get to this spot. And that's why I'm here today.
- 56:53And he started to cry. And I, I felt it, you know, you
- 56:57know, when you feel it from somebody, when you when you feel
- 56:59somebody cry and you felt it, I felt it from him.
- 57:03He's sincere, he's powerful, he's everything you want.
- 57:06I'm telling you, Giant fans, and I'm going to tell you this is
- 57:09from my heart. If the Giants pass up on this
- 57:12kid and trade out of this pick, they're making a big mistake,
- 57:16Big mistake. As much as I like Jackson dart,
- 57:20if the Giants are drafting at one, I trade Jackson Dart and
- 57:23I'm drafting this kid. You can book it.
- 57:25I'm telling you right now, this kid is the real deal.
- 57:27I really do believe it. I was wrong about Zach Wilson,
- 57:30but I've been right about quarterbacks.
- 57:32I've been right about players. I'm right about this.
- 57:35I, I fought with Jeff on the phone the other day and I said,
- 57:38he says this kid, I, I, you don't know what this kids going
- 57:42to be. I don't think this kids going to
- 57:43be any good. I said, you're wrong.
- 57:45This kid is a star. This kid is a star in the making
- 57:48and I believe he's going to be a star in this league.
- 57:50Giant fans. I'm telling you, Speedy, you're
- 57:53a giant fan. You're a giant fan, Fisher, a
- 57:56giant fan. You pass up on this kid, you're
- 57:58making the biggest mistake at your organization in as a giant
- 58:01fan. And and I'm telling you right
- 58:03now, he's the best fit for any of these teams.
- 58:06Anywhere he goes, he will be a star.
- 58:08Yeah, it's interesting. When you look at all the flashy
- 58:10Heisman winners we've had over the years, and Fernando Mendoza,
- 58:13that kind of a breath of fresh air is kind of the opposite.
- 58:15Very humble. Like you said, he came from Cal.
- 58:17He came from Cal Berkeley. That's an academic school that
- 58:20they've really fallen off as a football program.
- 58:22They fired their coach this year when he was actually going to in
- 58:24a bowl game. So just shows you where they're
- 58:26going. But Mendoza LED a team in a very
- 58:29difficult Big 10 E and did it with expectations of, oh, wait,
- 58:34when's this team going to drop off?
- 58:35I haven't even picked up last week that Alabama or Oklahoma
- 58:39would upset them. I still don't know.
- 58:40But they're very new all at once.
- 58:41But that doesn't take away from the adversity that somebody like
- 58:44Mendoza really has brought to a team in Indiana that's been more
- 58:47known as a basketball program, a basketball state for a while.
- 58:50And everyone there really rallied around him and rallied
- 58:54around that kind of just mindset that both he has and Signetti
- 58:58has been coming over for him as a coach of JMU.
- 59:00And now you're seeing a combination of just consistency,
- 59:03great leadership. Yeah, not these amazing traits
- 59:05with everything, but like you're saying, Errol Joe Burrow, like
- 59:08traits that as a leader in the NFL you would want as a
- 59:12franchise quarterback and in the College Football Playoff, you
- 59:14would want as a veteran leader that you're seeing come more
- 59:17often. These guys have been adversity
- 59:19going from other schools and making it work.
- 59:21I got a question for. You.
- 59:22Yeah, the Giants drafting at one Do you draft Fernando Mendoza?
- 59:27Everything that I've told you what I see him as a player.
- 59:31Do you do you trade Jackson dart and do you draft Fernando
- 59:35Mendoza? I see I I it's.
- 59:37Interesting because I think Mendoza is I ask you a question.
- 59:39It's a yes or no question. It's tough.
- 59:41Because Mendoza is not leadership wise, I think ahead
- 59:46of Dart. I don't like the process of
- 59:48draft from back-to-back quarterback.
- 59:49Like bash the Cardinals for that straight Jackson Dart.
- 59:52People think you could get there.
- 59:54Are there are teams like the Rams that I believe might trade
- 59:57a first round? They have two of them.
- 59:59They could trade a late first round draft pick for a Jackson
- 1:00:01Dart. So to sit here and say, hey, no,
- 1:00:04they don't have a future. They don't.
- 1:00:07The Rams do not have a future at at the quarterback position.
- 1:00:10They have Matthew Stafford. How many years does he have
- 1:00:13left? There is no Baker Mayfield there
- 1:00:15anymore. You can make that move.
- 1:00:17They wanted Jackson Dart last year.
- 1:00:19They decided, obviously the Giants decided to move up to get
- 1:00:22him and and really jump the Rams on sneaking up and getting them.
- 1:00:26So why wouldn't you do this? You're wrong, Speedy.
- 1:00:29I'm sorry. I'm telling you, fans.
- 1:00:32I'm telling you, if The Jets move up and steal Jack, they
- 1:00:35steal Fernando, Fernando Mendoza from you guys, you're going to
- 1:00:38regret it. I'm telling you, this guy is the
- 1:00:40real deal. I'm not.
- 1:00:42There is, I've speedy, you know, I've gone out on a limb many,
- 1:00:46many times and I've, I've been wrong here and there, but I,
- 1:00:49I've been right about a lot of players.
- 1:00:51And this guy, I am 100% sure if he comes to New York, he's a
- 1:00:57star. I'm telling you, The Jets are
- 1:01:00looking for a guy they can build their franchise around.
- 1:01:03This is the guy. This is the guy quiet.
- 1:01:07He's an assassin. He knows how to speak to the
- 1:01:09media. He is perfect, perfect.
- 1:01:12And he's got the biggest hands I've ever seen.
- 1:01:15OK, So we're like, can he? Pick a hand speed.
- 1:01:17No, I get. Where Speedy's coming from on
- 1:01:19the, on the back, like the back-to-back of, you know,
- 1:01:23obviously they took Jackson Dart for a reason and in the way they
- 1:01:26did it. And I, I agree kind of with what
- 1:01:28Speedy's saying too, because do do you really know what Jackson
- 1:01:32Dart's going to be? And you do that back-to-back.
- 1:01:34Obviously you've kind of gotten a more, I guess personal feel
- 1:01:38of, of kind of what, you know, Mendoza can do.
- 1:01:42Obviously us in the Big 10, kind of, we kind of knew it because
- 1:01:45we, we see it a little bit different.
- 1:01:47And obviously we didn't play them this year, But I, I think
- 1:01:50it's, it's tough to look at it either way because it's like you
- 1:01:54don't want to pass up on a talent like that.
- 1:01:56But even as, as you say it, the way that he conducts himself in
- 1:02:00in that manner is completely different than when you actually
- 1:02:05put him in and see failure at at that stage, right?
- 1:02:08And I just don't for me, it's like you take the best you can,
- 1:02:12but also what's best for your team.
- 1:02:15And if you haven't really seen what Jackson Dart can be, I
- 1:02:20think it's really it's it's a tough decision to be made.
- 1:02:24I I think. They, they're going to be OK
- 1:02:26either way. It's going to be interesting to
- 1:02:28see how it falls or if they do move up or whoever moves up and,
- 1:02:32and how we've always talked about how the drafts A crapshoot
- 1:02:34anyways, because you don't really know.
- 1:02:37I think from what I've seen watching him and obviously being
- 1:02:40a Big 10 guy myself, I, I, I think he has all the attributes
- 1:02:44to be great. And he went out and proved it.
- 1:02:46And from what we see from afar and, and how he handled himself
- 1:02:51and the way he, he did things, you know, on and off the field,
- 1:02:54I, I think it's, it's a great addition to any team that's
- 1:02:58going to get him. Where will he fall?
- 1:02:59It is going to be the loaded question that everybody's going
- 1:03:02to talk about, I'm going to say. This and I, I, I keep hearing
- 1:03:05about, well, they still have Jackson Dart.
- 1:03:07You bring in a new GM, which they probably are, they don't
- 1:03:12think Jackson Dart might not be the future.
- 1:03:14And Jackson Dart is a mobile quarterback.
- 1:03:17He really hasn't shown enough where you could say, oh, this
- 1:03:20guy could throw. This guy can make every single
- 1:03:22throw. I would worry about Jackson
- 1:03:24Dart. First of all, his first year,
- 1:03:26how many injuries has he had already?
- 1:03:282-3? The guy can't stay healthy.
- 1:03:30He doesn't know how to slide. We've seen this Mark Sanchez
- 1:03:33when he was a Jet. I would worry about Jackson
- 1:03:36Dart. This guy, he is, he's an
- 1:03:38assassin. The way he plays and the way he
- 1:03:42he nitpicks, he's guys. I want to tell you guys funny,
- 1:03:45something funny. So I when you go out when when
- 1:03:49we were there at the Heisman, when the Heisman awards, they
- 1:03:52gave you a book and they give you a Heisman with the Heisman
- 1:03:55Trophy on the book so you can take notes.
- 1:03:58Well, he had one. All the guys had one.
- 1:04:00So he was writing in the book because I guess he was, he was
- 1:04:04taking down notes. He is to me, he's OCD.
- 1:04:09So when he put the book down, when he was sitting, when he was
- 1:04:12doing the interview with the media, so they split up the guys
- 1:04:14in fours. So you could go to either him,
- 1:04:17Jeremiah, you can go to say in you can go to Pavia, you can go
- 1:04:20to any one of them. I choose Mendoza because I knew
- 1:04:22he was going to win and I was, he was set up right behind me
- 1:04:25where I was sitting in the media room.
- 1:04:27So when I was there, when he sat down, the first thing he did was
- 1:04:31put the book right in front of him, placed it and kept moving
- 1:04:35it around. And when you watch somebody do
- 1:04:37something like that, you can see that the guy on every single
- 1:04:42particular thing that he was doing, he was pulling his,
- 1:04:45pulling his pants down from his socks.
- 1:04:47He's a perfectionist. And I'll tell you guys this, has
- 1:04:51anybody seen Joe Burrow? Has anybody watched the Netflix
- 1:04:54Quarterback 5? Whatever what they call that,
- 1:04:57that Netflix show it? It's crazy because Joe Burrow is
- 1:05:01an OCD perfectionist. And when you watch quarterbacks
- 1:05:05do these kind of things and you, you watch how they tally things
- 1:05:09and they look at numbers and, and statistics.
- 1:05:12He's that kind of guy. And I'm, I'm telling you,
- 1:05:14there's just something about him that caught my eye that I think
- 1:05:18I, I'm going all out. If I'm, I'm The Jets right now,
- 1:05:21I'm going all out to get him. I'm making that move.
- 1:05:24I, I, I looked at the numbers. If The Jets are drafting at 5,
- 1:05:27all they have to give up is next year's first to get the 3000
- 1:05:31points, cuz you need to get the 3000 points.
- 1:05:33You can give up a second this year and A and 1/5 next year and
- 1:05:38that'll get the deal done to move up from 5:00 to 5:00 to
- 1:05:411:00 if they want. If they start at two or three,
- 1:05:44they would only have to give up A1 next year and maybe a two
- 1:05:47this year to get to get somebody like to move up and and get
- 1:05:52Mendoza. So I think that's if I'm if I'm
- 1:05:55The Jets, I'm making that move. I know I I wrote a story about
- 1:05:58Joe Burrow that he could be available.
- 1:06:00I'm not taking a chance with Joe Burrow because he's an injury
- 1:06:02prone player. This guy, this guy plays hurt.
- 1:06:05This guy. It goes out there week by week
- 1:06:07and just astounds you on on the way He plays over there in
- 1:06:11Indiana and and and just an absolutely amazing personality.
- 1:06:15I'm telling you right now, slam dunk guys.
- 1:06:17NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Michael Parson
- 1:06:20suffered A torn ACL in the Packers 34 to 26 loss to the
- 1:06:26Broncos. Rappaport added that the Parson
- 1:06:28surgery will require him to miss at least nine months, meaning he
- 1:06:33will miss some or maybe perhaps many regular season games.
- 1:06:38In 2026, Parson suffered a non contact injury to his left knee
- 1:06:44while rushing the quarterback and went down immediately,
- 1:06:47grabbing his knee. At the time of the injury.
- 1:06:50Parson Larson's was third in the NFL with 79 total pressures and
- 1:06:55tied for third in the NFL with 12.5 sacks.
- 1:07:00He was rated as a the second best edge rusher in football
- 1:07:05behind Miles Garrett before the injury.
- 1:07:07With defensive tackle Devante Wyatt also out for the year,
- 1:07:13Rashawn Gary is the only other player who has more than two
- 1:07:18sacks this season. The Packers defense, with the
- 1:07:21addition of Parsons this year, has been a top ten in both yards
- 1:07:26points allowed per game. Parsons new four year $186
- 1:07:31million contract will begin next season.
- 1:07:34Coming off an ACL injury, the Packers are sitting at 9, four
- 1:07:40and one in second place behind the Chicago Bears, holding on to
- 1:07:45the last playoff spot in the NFC ahead of the 8:00 and 6:00
- 1:07:49Detroit Lions and seven and seven Carolina Panthers with
- 1:07:53three games left of the regular season.
- 1:07:56Losing Michael Parsons is absolutely going to be hurt,
- 1:08:01hurtful, and it might affect them sneaking into the playoffs.
- 1:08:06But the way Jordan Love has played over the last couple
- 1:08:09weeks and having Reed come back and the way Christian Watson's
- 1:08:14playing, I think that and Jacobs, I think this team has
- 1:08:18enough offense to drive them into the play offs.
- 1:08:23Now, the defensive side of the ball, you're right.
- 1:08:25Losing a guy like Devante Wyatt and losing a guy like Michael
- 1:08:30Parsons to that defense, which has been an elite defense all
- 1:08:33season long, yes, it hurts you. But this is a defense that
- 1:08:38played very well last year. Wasn't this the defense that
- 1:08:41went to an NFC title game last year?
- 1:08:43Weren't they? Didn't they go to an NFC title
- 1:08:45game? Let's show not the NFC title
- 1:08:47game. They went to the semis where
- 1:08:49they lost against the 49ers, right?
- 1:08:51Eagles. They lost.
- 1:08:52Against Eagles I I'm trying to remember because I over the last
- 1:08:55couple of years, Jordan Love has looked pretty good in the
- 1:08:57playoffs and looked very good in the second-half.
- 1:08:59So I'm trying to remember what year Jordan Love really made
- 1:09:03that run. But Jordan Love in the
- 1:09:06second-half of the season last two years has been pretty good.
- 1:09:10And I think Jordan Love is playing the best football of the
- 1:09:13season right now. Now the question is, are they
- 1:09:17going to be able to stop some of these offensive teams?
- 1:09:19If the Buccaneers sneak in and they're matched up against the
- 1:09:21Buccaneers, are they going to be able to play the Buccaneers,
- 1:09:24especially if the Buccaneers are the home team?
- 1:09:27Now we've seen Jordan Love has played better at home than he's
- 1:09:31played away. And Jordan Love and I, I'll say
- 1:09:35this again, I think the Bears are going to win out the NFC
- 1:09:40North. I think they're going to win.
- 1:09:42So I, I don't think there's any question that.
- 1:09:45And, and the Bears, the Packers already beat the Bears, but the
- 1:09:48Bears have a chance now to beat the Packers.
- 1:09:50Now without Michael Parsons, this could be a different
- 1:09:53defense that they played and Michael Parsons played very well
- 1:09:56against the Bears. So losing a player of this
- 1:09:59magnitude absolutely effects the way they're going to play
- 1:10:03defense. But I think that what we've seen
- 1:10:06over the last couple of years is what this offense could do.
- 1:10:10And the way Christian Watson is playing right now as a #1 and
- 1:10:14Jaden Reed coming back and, and the way they can spread out the
- 1:10:17ball, I I think they can absolutely sneak into the
- 1:10:20playoffs and make noise. I just losing a player that
- 1:10:24you're paying four years, 186 million to and losing them for
- 1:10:27practically the whole season next year, it hurts.
- 1:10:30It hurts and you put a lot of money into this.
- 1:10:32What are you doing you off season?
- 1:10:33Do you have enough money to add some defensive help?
- 1:10:37Hendrickson will be available this offseason.
- 1:10:39I don't they're definitely not going to have enough money
- 1:10:41because they're paying a guy like Michael Parsons $48
- 1:10:44million. So they're going to have to
- 1:10:46really spin the wheel, make the deal and and bring in a veteran
- 1:10:51guy that you hope you hit on. I just, I don't know if there's
- 1:10:54anybody out there that you can bring in in the offseason.
- 1:10:57And, and remember, the coach was on the hot seat a couple of
- 1:11:00weeks ago. People were talking about maybe
- 1:11:04firing, firing the coach in the offseason.
- 1:11:07So I, I don't know if the Packers miss, do they decide to
- 1:11:11move elsewhere when it comes to coaching or maybe the GM?
- 1:11:14So I, I don't know, I, I just, they put a lot of eggs in
- 1:11:18Michael Parsons pot, you know, put a lot of eggs in his basket.
- 1:11:21And now that Michael Parsons is out for the rest of the season
- 1:11:24and he's not going to make noise in the playoffs.
- 1:11:25And I, I told you guys, Michael Parsons is a great regular
- 1:11:28season player. He has not been a performing
- 1:11:32player in the playoffs. I wanted to see with this
- 1:11:35defense and this team, can he make noise in the playoffs for
- 1:11:37the first time in his career? And we're not going to see it
- 1:11:39for another year. We might not see it for another
- 1:11:41two years. So it's alarming to me when you
- 1:11:44put a lot of money into a 26 year old now that has torn his
- 1:11:48ACL and it might not be the same player coming back from an
- 1:11:52injury like this, no. And you?
- 1:11:53I worry about the long term more than I do with the short term.
- 1:11:56Like you were mentioning, they were -7 under the cap when they
- 1:11:59first traded for Parsons. So they really had to manipulate
- 1:12:01everything even just to get him there because Michael Parsons
- 1:12:04mentioned they were talking about with the trade.
- 1:12:06He mentioned I would definitely want to go there.
- 1:12:08I definitely want to sign there to be the come the highest paid
- 1:12:10defensive player in NFL history. And that's where, like you said,
- 1:12:12maybe there's some pressure on the GM to try to be creative
- 1:12:15with that kind of thing. If they can't figure out get
- 1:12:17better support and cast around that defense without him.
- 1:12:20That's already pretty injury prone as it is.
- 1:12:22How are they going to base on it long term?
- 1:12:24Now, in the short term, yeah, you might have been hard for
- 1:12:26them to win in the playoffs anyway with the Rams and the
- 1:12:28Seahawks having really good offensive lines.
- 1:12:29Like those are probably the two best teams in the NFC now.
- 1:12:33Again, if they beat the Bears, they still have a shot to win
- 1:12:35the division because they have the head to head tiebreaker.
- 1:12:37But Even so, like, is that really going to be so judging as
- 1:12:41are we're going to be a real Super Bowl threat?
- 1:12:42Everyone was jumping the Packers as being one of the big Super
- 1:12:46Bowl threats last year. I think a lot of people like
- 1:12:48them and the Eagles like second best 2 best teams in the NFC at
- 1:12:51the beginning of the year, that offense.
- 1:12:52Is a Super Bowl threat and and they're going to have to put up
- 1:12:55a lot of points. There's no question they're
- 1:12:57going to have to but to say that they can't win without Michael
- 1:13:00Parsons and even Wyatt that's that's crazy.
- 1:13:03They can they're going to have to dial it up.
- 1:13:05They're going to by the way, dial up.
- 1:13:06I could have used that. You're going to have to dial it
- 1:13:08up and and and put put the right you know what?
- 1:13:11I think the right nickel out there, the right dime play, the
- 1:13:15right percentages out there. Defensively, their secondary is
- 1:13:18still fairly good and they've played very well.
- 1:13:20And, and again, the Legion of Boom, if you remember those
- 1:13:24Seattle defenses, they had a pretty good front 7, but they
- 1:13:27weren't elite. They were good.
- 1:13:29It was their secondary which was elite.
- 1:13:32And right now, if you look at the Packers and where they're
- 1:13:34ranked as far as their secondary is concerned, they're in the top
- 1:13:3710. So to say that they can't win
- 1:13:39with this defense absolutely could.
- 1:13:42And they got a great running game.
- 1:13:43It's all about running the ball, controlling the clock and it.
- 1:13:46Does your quarterback show up in the big game?
- 1:13:48And Jordan Love, for the last two years, has shown up in the
- 1:13:51playoffs like the. The game you were mentioning
- 1:13:53with the 49ers too, his rookie, his first year as a starter,
- 1:13:56Yeah, like he played well in that game up until the third
- 1:13:58quarter. Yeah, just had one bad quarter.
- 1:13:59But yeah, they all played the 49ers.
- 1:14:01They probably. That was two years ago.
- 1:14:02Yeah, yeah, right. They.
- 1:14:03Probably should have won that game because there was that
- 1:14:05really bad call that went the Niners away and then I think it
- 1:14:08was a fourth down or something that the Packers, they beat the
- 1:14:1040. Niners that year, they go to the
- 1:14:12Super Bowl. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:14:13Possible because you also look at the Packers the way they
- 1:14:15played the Lions that year too. The Jordan Love is best game of
- 1:14:18the season on that thing. He was the best quarterback.
- 1:14:20He was the best quarterback in the playoffs that year, so.
- 1:14:23There's definitely possibilities where the offense, he ended up
- 1:14:25taking them and that's where you think you, you wonder, you have
- 1:14:28the dilemma of like trying to be able to run the ball and play
- 1:14:31ball control to give your defense rest or still try to go
- 1:14:33for the big plays. And that's where the coaching is
- 1:14:35going to come into a lot. And especially losing Wyatt too,
- 1:14:38like they're better against the run they've been in previous
- 1:14:40years. But it definitely hurts when you
- 1:14:42trade Clark and you're hoping why.
- 1:14:43I could take a leap, but now he's hurt too.
- 1:14:44But you're right, they have good.
- 1:14:46You're complaining about Kenny Clark?
- 1:14:47No, no, no, I'm saying. It just it's, it's a bad luck
- 1:14:50circumstance where he's also hurt too.
- 1:14:52He's the guy that's replacing Kenny Clark and he played very
- 1:14:55well this year. Probably a Pro Bowl caliber
- 1:14:57defensive tackle and he just he gets hurt too.
- 1:14:59But they're good. Middle of the field offensive
- 1:15:01line is a question, but they're skill players now.
- 1:15:03All being healthy outside of craft is great for them.
- 1:15:06No. I think you got hit the nail on
- 1:15:09that with it. You're not going to replace
- 1:15:12them, but can they still win? But I think Errol, you're right,
- 1:15:15they'll have to get a little bit more creative on on how they go
- 1:15:18about it because obviously having a threat like that and
- 1:15:21having, you know, your 1B player obviously being hurt.
- 1:15:23Well, I think I think it's just they're going to have to move
- 1:15:27and shake a little bit more than they would have to at at the
- 1:15:30point of having those guys. But like you said, they they've
- 1:15:34done it already and then adding him obviously was a huge
- 1:15:36component, but they're just going to have to be more
- 1:15:39creative on how they do it. But I mean, obviously with, with
- 1:15:43what they have, they they've proven that they can do it.
- 1:15:45It's just how are they going to maneuver around it And and what
- 1:15:49packages are they going to put together for them to see how far
- 1:15:53they can get? Are they are they going to get
- 1:15:54to where they want to get? Probably not, But I I think
- 1:15:58they're still going to be competitive.
- 1:16:00Oh, I think they. Can.
- 1:16:01As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the Packers make
- 1:16:03a run. Everybody is quote, quoting what
- 1:16:07the coach has said after Michael Michael Parsons goes down.
- 1:16:10And and I don't know if anybody watched the media in the press
- 1:16:13conference. It was like somebody died in the
- 1:16:15room. It was like, the season's over.
- 1:16:18We're not making the playoffs. Like, come on, guys.
- 1:16:20This is still a quality team. This is still a good
- 1:16:22quarterback. This is still a team that can
- 1:16:24put up points. This is still a team that's
- 1:16:26quite capable, especially the way the Packers have played over
- 1:16:30the last two years in the second-half of the season to
- 1:16:32make a run in the playoffs. Jordan Love has been very good
- 1:16:36in the playoffs really since he started two years ago.
- 1:16:40I absolutely believe with the running game they have with
- 1:16:43Jacobs and the ability they have with Christian Watson,
- 1:16:46Christian, you know who's going to make himself a lot of money
- 1:16:48in the offseason, it's Christian Watson and Beth.
- 1:16:50Guess what? The Packers are not going to be
- 1:16:51able to pay him. So guess where he's going?
- 1:16:54He's going to a team that's going to be willing to spend and
- 1:16:57is looking for a #1 because he's proven this year he can be a
- 1:17:00number 1. So I'm telling you right now, if
- 1:17:03I to me, if, if the Packers have any chance and won a chance to
- 1:17:08win a Super Bowl. Remember in 2010 when the
- 1:17:11Packers won their their first Super Bowl since Brett Favre
- 1:17:15and, and it was the only championship Aaron Rodgers won?
- 1:17:18It was the IT was the they were the first wild card team.
- 1:17:21I think they were they were 16. They were 60.
- 1:17:23They were the first 60 to win a Super Bowl.
- 1:17:26OK, where were the right now? As of right now, where are the
- 1:17:29Packers sitting the last spot? They're in the last.
- 1:17:32Spot and the Packers had that year, they had three major
- 1:17:37injuries on the defensive side of the ball.
- 1:17:39I remember it. And what did the Packers do?
- 1:17:43Young Aaron Rodgers took them all the way to the Super Bowl
- 1:17:45and surprise shocked the world as they win the Super Bowl.
- 1:17:50I wouldn't be surprised if the Packers could do something like
- 1:17:53that where everybody thinks they're call, they're counting
- 1:17:55them out. Michael Parsons down, up,
- 1:17:57season's over and coach could be out of here.
- 1:18:00Because I remember, remember that Mike McCarthy, I remember
- 1:18:04they were talking about maybe firing Mike McCarthy at the end
- 1:18:07of the season. I remember it like it was
- 1:18:09yesterday. And then they sneak into the
- 1:18:11playoffs and they make a run. So I'm just saying I, I go back
- 1:18:15and I look and I kind of try to compare things.
- 1:18:17This is very comparable to that 2010 Aaron Rodgers team that
- 1:18:21went all the way. I mean, we've had players on
- 1:18:23this show that were a part of that team and they remember that
- 1:18:25like it was yesterday where everybody counted them out and
- 1:18:28they went on that run. So yeah, they were guiding a.
- 1:18:30Tiebreaker with the Giants and Bucks were both 10 and six like
- 1:18:33I remember. I remember.
- 1:18:35I remember it like it was yesterday.
- 1:18:36And why do I remember it? Because that was when The Jets
- 1:18:38were actually good. So The Jets could have.
- 1:18:42Lost to their future quarterback and their roster.
- 1:18:44So that was Super Bowl, that was that.
- 1:18:46Was when The Jets actually had a pretty good team, really good
- 1:18:49roster. They had Rex Ryan, not Mark
- 1:18:52Sanchez, Mr. Buffalo himself. But hey it.
- 1:18:54Was a pretty good team. Anyways, I remember Alan Felly
- 1:18:57Feneca, who's a Hall of Fame, I believe is going to be a Hall of
- 1:19:00Fame. Thank you to all the fans that
