- 2:37The Violent than Pattens the transcribed adventure of George Valentine. Dinister Valentine,
- 2:50I suppose many families had their own special kind of curse, but van Patents
- 2:54had the curse of violence, a sort of violence that's been born of the
- 2:59roaring crash of the sea and the loneliness of fog Horn Island, and laughter
- 3:02that has no mirth in it at all. I know others doesn't make much
- 3:07sense, but you must at least try and understand it if you're going to
- 3:10help me, and I need help. Mister Valentine, Please meet a man
- 3:15named Max at the foot of the eighth Street bridge. He'll have a boat
- 3:19and he'll take you and Miss Brooks to see the Violet van Pattens. Sincerely,
- 3:23Leader van Patten. But man's there must be something you can tell us
- 3:36about Van Pattens. I own their work for the capital. Listen. I
- 3:38don't talk about him or his folks. But that's a very noble attitude that
- 3:43we're not really trying to pry in the family secret Leader van Patten. Is
- 3:47she the captain's wife? Niece? I see? Are there any other ladies
- 3:53on this fog Horn islands? Adjust as a matter of girlish curiosity, let's
- 3:59Rachel, Captain's adopted sister, one of the guests as a lady quite a
- 4:05ways out from the shore, isn't it, George Ya? That's right,
- 4:08proxy violence born of the royal crash of the sea in the lone lands of
- 4:12fog Grn Island used to be a lighthouse. Understand before they've built a new
- 4:15one down the coast. They still love some Fogorns around here, hit'em.
- 4:19No, just Avent Pappens live on Forgron Island, a landin Pattens.
- 4:24And are you You aren't one of the family that I take a nice said
- 4:30me. I'm just a man of all trades. Take care of the Big
- 4:34House, me who used to be a second mate, Captain Lewis by himself
- 4:42the White House. How cousin, mister, I wouldn't be a vent patou
- 4:46for all the money in the world. Why it's quite a squirrel coming up,
- 4:53Mistea, quite a squirrel, a laughter that has no merchant at all.
- 5:11What did you say, my dear, nothing? Nothing was Santian Rachel?
- 5:15Call me Rachel, then patten name was only giving me grudgingly as an
- 5:19act of charity. Here. Yes, no, I'm sorry. I lost
- 5:26my temper. That's a terrible thing to do, isn't it, Mister Valentine,
- 5:31isn't good. The captain lost his temper once and nearly killed. And
- 5:34then I loved and the young men went away. And here I am a
- 5:41spinster who can only play solitaire all day and laugh at jokes I alone can
- 5:47hear. I'm sorry, miss Rachel about Lena. Are you sure she knows
- 5:53we're here? Oh? Yes, Next told her she'll be here with the
- 5:58young man who's vint be led Lloyd and Doris Franken will be here too,
- 6:02ranks Lloyd's leaders. Second cousin. Doris is his wife, a charming girl,
- 6:06but she dreams too much that you knew Leader has some secret. That's
- 6:12why you're here. I leaders always love secrets the once You're right, I
- 6:19do have a secret Leader. You startled me. Hello, mister Valentine,
- 6:26this Brooks Long, This is Loyd and Dorris Franken do you And this is
- 6:30Jim Simmons my husband. Yes, that's our secret. You you married Leader,
- 6:41so somebody the captain didn't choose him. Oh that was brilliant of you.
- 6:46You're jealous, Lloyds, shut up, bed husband, shut up Lloyd
- 6:51Darth. Oh, temper everybody, tempera please broll. Congratulations Frank Patton,
- 6:57or rather missus Simmons. But if I can speak to you alone, I'd
- 7:00like to know why you're here. I would be a help. Mister Valentine.
- 7:04I I want you to break the happy news to my uncle Frankly.
- 7:09It's a job which has its dangers and one for which someone deserves to be
- 7:13paid. Well, this is a twist, Valentine will sort of carry you
- 7:18across the threshold. Jim might be quiet, Jim, Jim Darling, I
- 7:24know I lied to you. I told you. Mister Valentine and miss Brooks
- 7:27were dear friends of mine, and I just had to have them near me
- 7:30when I announced our marriage. But believe me, Jim, I know what
- 7:33I'm doing. I know my uncle. Stop that at Rachel, Oh,
- 7:38go on a good laugh, husband, I needs a paid strong man to
- 7:43speak for him as something to laugh about. Jimmy, Oh, I'll speak
- 7:46to the old girl myself, and then I've taken you off this out.
- 7:50Please please go after mister Valentine. I need your help more than ever now.
- 8:05Okay, Simmons, Okay, I understand your pride is here it Frankly,
- 8:09I don't blame you for feeling the way you do. I didn't know
- 8:13Lita has all this money coming from her uncle. If he doesn't like the
- 8:16guy she married, let him cut off a lot of set. Relax,
- 8:18friends, Relax. He probably will let me finish packing. Sure. Yeah,
- 8:24that's quite a fancy knife Japanese. Huh. Here, I'll put it
- 8:31in that drawer and I'll listen to me. What did you, jim put
- 8:35all those things back when they belong? Sure? Sure, Lita has known
- 8:39her uncle a lot longer than either you and I, and she feels I
- 8:41should be the one to break their happy tidings to him. Well, let's
- 8:43play it her. Yeah, but maybe coming from a stranger, the news
- 8:46will be easier to take anyway. My shoulders are pretty broad. Let's give
- 8:52it a try. And so my dear ly Scott merry nay, mister Valentine.
- 9:05Yeah, that's that's right. Yeah, I just got merry here she
- 9:09is. The deed is done taking a leader, dear uncle. Huh.
- 9:13Hey, you've had nothing to say about it, dear uncle, And if
- 9:16you don't like it, you can keep your precious fortune. That's about the
- 9:20signe. Good for her. Yeah, good for you, young man,
- 9:28for bringing me such good news. Yeah. Sure here shake shake, come
- 9:33on, come on, shake hands with a big bad tyrant before corn Island.
- 9:39Sure leader has done the first brave thing any of the man patterns have
- 9:45done in twenty years. Yeah, and I'm just a big enough bully to
- 9:48appreciate it. Shoot, well that's really I have always taken anything I wanted
- 9:54from life, and our leader did too. Hello, hang around on this
- 9:58evening, young fello. We'll all have a pepper the celebration. Eh.
- 10:03Yeah, thank you, thank you very much. Can't you persuade him to
- 10:18stay in? Mister Valentine makes the decisions for this out set, mister Simmons.
- 10:22Just there's no point in hanging around leading the job pulled, no job
- 10:26at all. I'm very happy for you. Oh and I'm happy too and
- 10:28so grateful. So all's well? That ends Well, Oh there's Max.
- 10:33Yeah, I tell him to get the send things around. What's ax?
- 10:41Somebody's been mucking around with what do you mean? Luke engine's all busted up?
- 10:46Yeah you can say that again. But why who'd want to do that?
- 10:50Those are interesting questions that the answers would be even more interesting. Okay,
- 10:54we'll use another boat, Max, So this was the only one the
- 10:58roofs we'll see no telephone in one boat. That's how Uncle's always kept fog
- 11:05Horn Island his own private empire. And how old this boat ever bequicks We're
- 11:09gonna have to put a message in a bottle and hope somebody in Australia will
- 11:11pick it up. Well, it's not quite bad, right. It looks
- 11:15as though you'll have to stay at least until this evening, mister Valentine.
- 11:18And then well then Uncle will turn on the big light on top of his
- 11:22beloved tower. In the dark it can be still on the mainland and then
- 11:24people will know that something's wrong here. It's sort of a tradition, not
- 11:30charming. Well, Broosee, it looks as though we'll have to stay on
- 11:33fog Horn Island, whether we want to or not. George, I wish
- 11:52you would get dark. Getting me nervous, Yeah, I know it.
- 11:56John violent vent peppers, and the only one who's not violent at all is
- 12:01the big bed ogre himself. No reason I can think of for the broken
- 12:05boat is to keep us here. But why no, Maybe somebody's desperate for
- 12:11a fourth and bridget seem the captain trips from that friend, I would not
- 12:22the lighthouse to thank him for being so swell about leading me. He was
- 12:28moaning. Then he died in front of him. He died, I mean
- 12:35died. Come on, snamp out of it. It wasn't knife in his
- 12:41back mine. All right, everybody, all right, please listen to me
- 12:54and listen, can't please. There's nothing we can do until it gets dark,
- 12:58and when he comes out here for the mainland, somebody we can send
- 13:01back for the police. Fellow's life. He must have had an argument with
- 13:05the captain and killed. He didn't. Jim would hurt anybody, of course,
- 13:09he wouldn't. He's not a van Patton. Only a Van Patton would
- 13:16hurt. Sorry, my dear, you must admit there's something too Max's logic.
- 13:24You stay out of it. Lloyd, thinking is something you don't do
- 13:28very well. Thank you, my dear wife. Of course, it was
- 13:33my knife. But don't you see it. Somebody's trying to frame me,
- 13:37or it could be you, James, pulling a fast one, hoping that
- 13:41we would think you were being framed. You're wrong, so wrong. I'm
- 13:46not the police. It doesn't matter whether I'm right or wrong. I was
- 13:48simply saying that everybody should stick pretty close to his own wrong, let's say,
- 13:52just for safety's sakes. Safety. See. Yeah, there's one thing
- 13:58about Murdie. It sends to become a habit. Going back into the house
- 14:09pros poor nod Eat. It gave me a coat. I want to go
- 14:13to the lighthouse with you. Okay. Getting set up like this, almost
- 14:18anybody could have killed the captain. I just got through talking to them.
- 14:22Nobody has an alibi except Rachel and Lloyd Rankin. They were playing double solitary.
- 14:28I suppose the police will think that either leader who has them the best
- 14:31motive for the murder. Yeah, Ledo is the only beneficiary in the captain's
- 14:35will, and of course Jim Simmons shares whatever leader gets. This would'll get
- 14:41off the silence the leader's right. It just seems to breathe violence and hire
- 14:46angel. Let me get over here and over the door. This key,
- 14:54Oh, I just listed you by inches Atlanta. I saw it before in
- 15:00the sill of the Captain's room. That's where it came from Broussel. The
- 15:05question is that they think you Alita or was it meant for us? We
- 15:22will return to tonight's adventure of George Valentine in just a moment. Summertime is
- 15:26vacation time and no time to have your vacation trips spoiled by battery trouble.
- 15:33And yet American motorists have to call for emergency service because of battery failure over
- 15:37ten million times a year. Most of these failures need never happen. You
- 15:41can escape this annoying trouble by having your battery service regularly by the car savers
- 15:48at independent Chevron gas stations and standard stations. Car savers make it their business
- 15:54to take regular care of your battery. They give it a periodic cell by
- 15:58cell check to see that it's kept filled with water. Car savers clean the
- 16:00terminals and coat them with a corrosion resistance and of course they test your battery
- 16:06to be sure it's capable of dependable starting. Car savers have a safety meter
- 16:10that gives a quick accurate report on your battery's condition if it needs a charge.
- 16:15They also have a fast charger to bring it back up to full power
- 16:18fast. So stop in soon for a complete car Saver battery checkout. Make
- 16:23sure you're not one of those who will have to call for emergency service this
- 16:27year. If you'd rather be safe and sorry, see your neighborhood car savers
- 16:32soon at any standard station or independent Chevron gas station where they say and mean
- 16:37we take better care of your car. You come to lonely Foghorn Island as
- 16:56well a sort of Cupid. To be more exact, Your job is to
- 17:00tell a man with a legendary temper that his only niece had gotten married without
- 17:03his knowledge or consent. You do that, and the violent Captain Van Patton
- 17:07turns out to be surprisingly genial. Then only a short while later he found
- 17:12murdered. Even if your name weren't George Valentine, you'd know that in this
- 17:18case, one murder was only the beginning, because now a heavy lantern just
- 17:22crashes at your feet, missing you by inches. On come on, come
- 17:29on, oh now the key would stake, doesn't Now? Where are the
- 17:37stairs? I could save myself a climb wherever it was up there? When
- 17:44out that bag, John, I could have been anybody. Hey, hey,
- 17:47you up there, sir? Wait? I told you to song?
- 17:56What are you doing telling? Come on, lanks, get up and I'm
- 18:00fast talking about what I'll give you three guesses. Come on, nah,
- 18:06how are you doing in that lighthouse? Just now you'll hurt me? Come
- 18:10on, I would just going in there, make sure that light was okay,
- 18:15for when it got dark you heard someone shoufoot know who it was?
- 18:18So I got scared? And right? You think fast, don't your Max?
- 18:23I don't know what you're talking about. Huh? You you didn't see
- 18:26anybody else around the lighthouse as you are about to go in, did you?
- 18:30No? Not a soul? See anything else? You want to me,
- 18:34mister? No? No? Then and a grim and chucking that light?
- 18:38Yeah I do that. I'll be seeing your max. Yeah, oh
- 18:53miss ranking? Yeah, it was ranked for you, I, miss teen,
- 18:57you sure we can go through here into Lead's room. She's not yet.
- 19:04Okay, Now what's on your mind? No? I means chup the
- 19:07door first. Oh, not very fun in a chair and sit down.
- 19:15Yeah, you better do that. I've been drinking more than I should.
- 19:22But she mis believe me, only perason making me say this. Say what
- 19:26I yeah, Lloyd could have killed Captain Van Patton say it's naturely killed.
- 19:34Do you realize what you're saying, missus Ranken? Yes, I've been saying,
- 19:37and my husband is no good. It's cruel, heartless. But miss
- 19:42Rachel told me she was playing corns with mister Rankin at the time the captain
- 19:45was killed. No, I can understand that, but I want to be
- 19:51sure you understand something. Yeah, what's that? Well, I'd always wanted
- 19:56to marry Leader. That's the only reason he married me, because he thought
- 20:00I had more money and he wouldn't have to wait for a captain than Pattent
- 20:04to die. Why the surprise he got was a beautiful surprise. A wife
- 20:11with no money, wife who had no love, and so I needed to
- 20:18drink. I think we'd better go back and join the others. Yeah,
- 20:22no, reason why I should burden you with my trouble. I just wanted
- 20:27to tell you about Lloyd. But really there's no real hurts. Oh,
- 20:41no, dirty more gone. Of course he's gone. Nothing out here but
- 20:52rain and falk. But why why would anyone want to kill Doris, have
- 21:06to harm anyone? No, don't please, won't do anybody any good,
- 21:10that's right, right? So will you stop that? I'm sorry. I
- 21:15don't know why I laughed. I don't see anything funny. There isn't anything
- 21:21funny. I just can't kill myself. Let's stop raining, so somebody on
- 21:26the main land to see it. Somebody comes out here soon. And until
- 21:30they do, Miss Brooks, what are we doing until they come out?
- 21:33But there's a murderer here. One of us is a murderer. How many
- 21:37more is he going to kill? That leader? Why? If every right
- 21:41to want to know? Maybe the murder didn't want to kill Doris at all.
- 21:47Maybe it was a mistake. What are you talking about, Well,
- 21:51come on answer me. Doris was sitting in my chair, her back to
- 21:53the window. Maybe the murderer thought he was shooting a knee, that's right,
- 21:57and later maybe it was meant for me too. Mistake. That would
- 22:06be funny. Okay, okay, cut that out, all of you.
- 22:12Hey, Max, Max, come in here, Yah, close the door.
- 22:18Okay, now we're all here and we're gonna stay here and wait.
- 22:22That's a good idea, George, But you must have some idea who the
- 22:26murderer is, mister Valentine, you must, as a matter of thank lead
- 22:30your husband would be a very prominent candidate for that honor me. No,
- 22:34it was his knife that killed the captain. His motives are the best,
- 22:38and if Doris was killed by mistake, the motives are even better. Yeah.
- 22:42With you out of the way, Leader, he'd have the entire van
- 22:45patent fortune. He must have done it. He must have taken that knife
- 22:47out of the draw and kill the captain. Just where were you when Doris
- 22:52was shot? Jim? Where were you? What's the matter with all of
- 22:56you? Are? I told you I was. I was looking at the
- 23:00book see if I could fix it? Yeah? Sure, okay, Lloyd,
- 23:03that's enough. I think it's time for me to have a private talk
- 23:07with Jimmy boy, come on, flind on your feet, come on with
- 23:10me. Oh I don't understand any of this though, don't try, Just
- 23:22do what I tell you believe in it? Sure sounds so wrong. So
- 23:27please just start screaming as though you were being beaten to a public. Okay,
- 23:32come on, no, please don't. I'm sorry, Nda. I
- 23:48tried to protect you, protect me. I just couldn't. One made me
- 23:56tell the truth? Was the truth? George, let him tell it.
- 24:00I saw you take the knife, Leader, I saw you go into the
- 24:04lighthouse and that ladder and fill down. Saw you push it down? You
- 24:10what I saw you outside of your room? And doors are shot? You
- 24:15tell such such lives about me to get the money. Oh, Jim,
- 24:23I'm sorry, Leader, very sorry. I had to tell him it's all
- 24:29everybody. You can go wherever you want. It's all over, miss Brooks
- 24:33and I will stay with missus Sins until the police arrive. George, give
- 24:44me at least one here, no time, Angel, I've set the trap.
- 24:47Now I must get up to Jim's room. Come on, murderer,
- 24:55come on, you're not afraid of the duck. Come on in answer,
- 25:00and you come now now. Put some Lloyd on you, don't I believe
- 25:18that gonna be Put it Lloyd in the desk. I said, leave it,
- 25:23good boy, After all, that's where you wanted the police to find
- 25:27a cher. You're crazy open the door, writ am I you know better
- 25:32call it? Oh no, no, I like it nice and cozy like
- 25:34this. If your wrist doesn't hurt anywhere as I watch, A Doors was
- 25:37hurt when you shot her. It hurts, she told me just before she
- 25:41died. Are you talking? You made a bad slip, Lloyd. You
- 25:45were too anxious to build a case against him, and so you said he
- 25:47took the knife out of the door and killed the captain. So what I
- 25:51didn't know what the knife was. I took it out of Jim's volise and
- 25:53put it into the drawer myself. You knew only because that's where you got
- 25:56it from. That's no proof. That's why I had to set this tramp.
- 26:00Having Lida hell for the two murders. Was the last thing you wanted,
- 26:03wasn't It wasn't, Lloyd. You're making up this fairy tale. Go
- 26:07on, keep too all right. You never gave up the idea of trying
- 26:10to get a leader in her money, but she got married and you tried
- 26:12a desperate scheme. Step one, kill the captain so a leader gets the
- 26:15money. Nobody will believe you Step two, kill Doris so you'll be free.
- 26:19Step three, make sure Jim gets caught for the two murders by planning
- 26:23a gun in his room, so a leader will be free. Guess guess
- 26:27wow, Rachel, come in, Come on in. What are you two
- 26:33doing here? I got an alibi? You remember, valentinic at an alibi?
- 26:37Yeah, alibi? Go on, Rachel, tell them again. You
- 26:40and I were playing double solitail when the captain was killed, were we?
- 26:44You'll remember you told it to them before. I don't remember, did I?
- 26:52Honey? Sometimes I remembered things, other times I don't remember it.
- 26:57All you have gotta remember I told pay price not bustling. He used a
- 27:07half crazy woman who hated her brother alive for you. Now she can't even
- 27:11remember the lie, which is gonna remember. I don't know why I laughed.
- 27:15He really isn't anything funny, mister Valentine. No, no, Rachel.
- 27:22Funny isn't the right word. Ironic is a much better one. Listen
- 27:36to the results of this performance test using heavy duty RPM motor oil. A
- 27:41fleet of taxicabs operated by Tennor Motor Tours of Las Vegas, Nevada used to
- 27:45average only thirty five thousand miles between overhauls. Today, using heavy duty RPM,
- 27:52these same cabs travel one hundred thousand miles before overhauling. Heavy duty RPM
- 27:57actually more than doubled engine life time between major overhauls due to lubrication. Remember
- 28:03these facts the next time you buy oil for top protection and top economy of
- 28:08operations. Switch over now to heavy duty RPM motor oil for your car at
- 28:14any independent Chevron gas station or standard station where they say and mean we take
- 28:19better care of your car. Will be right with him as oh boy this,
- 28:34Valentine, Kim, and I'll never be able to thank you. I
- 28:40don't know what you were trying to do. And when I had to say
- 28:41all those terrible things about leader, choose are those murders never really believed Amentum?
- 28:47Did your leader? Well? I didn't and I didn't. It was
- 28:52horrible. I still can't get over Boyd's cock eyed plan, even after I
- 28:56heard him admit everything you've been wrecking the boat so you to stay here,
- 29:00Valentine and helped the police put the blame on me when I was a desperate
- 29:03plan all right, there was so much money at Steak he must have fellow
- 29:06is worth taking a Claire fierce leader. We're going to spend a honeymoon here
- 29:11on fog Horn Island. Oh Good, When you need a paste for your
- 29:15honeymoon, you will let me know, won't you. I certainly will if
- 29:19you'll just take those fog horns away from me, Unless you like fog horns,
- 29:23George Ali Max, don't be some patient, after all, A honeymoonist
- 29:27for two. We're coming man. The Knight's Transcribed Adventure of George Valentine has

- 30:30has heard overseas through the worldwide facilities of the Armed Forces Radio serv This is
- 30:36the mutual broadcasting system. Welcome back. Well, after all of the intrigue
- 30:53of the past few weeks, Scotti, I used to get back to an
- 30:56old fashioned murder mystery with a interesting resolution and a few good twists. And
- 31:07of course I note the return to Jackson Gillis doing the writing. I think
- 31:14makes a world of difference in terms of the type of stories. The title
- 31:18of the two episodes that were missing, I should mention were The Churches,
- 31:23La Frame Up and Red Smoke. So that's that for that episode. I
- 31:30did receive an email from a listener or actually it's a comment. Kind of
- 31:37these come to me by email. Fred comments regarding episode eight three three the
- 31:41Iron Hat. Surprised you didn't make a comment about the motor oil Atomic research
- 31:47improved it. Well, I've talked about that. It's been a few months,
- 31:53maybe a year or so. But the long and short of it is
- 31:57that it was actually a pretty scientifically sound process. What they did is they
- 32:06measured used the radiation to measure the amount of engine wear, and in some
- 32:15earlier shows they kind of illustrated this by use of a Geiger Counter compare their
- 32:22motor oil and the amount of engine war it caused versus that of a leading
- 32:27brand in interesting. Like I said, interesting supposition did not make for good
- 32:32radio. You know, you're sitting there and you're gonna you know, it's
- 32:37kind of like just getting static. So they haven't done that in a while.
- 32:40But that's kind of the basis of that's kind of the basis of that.
- 32:45So all right, well, that'll do it for today. We'll see
- 32:49you back here tomorrow for Sherlock Holmes. In the meanwhile, send your commons
