- 0:00Speaker 1: The Book of Mormon, translated by Joseph Smith. First Nephi,
- 0:05Speaker 1: Chapter one. I Nephi, having been born of goodly parents,
- 0:10Speaker 1: Therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of
- 0:13Speaker 1: my father, and having seen many afflictions in the course
- 0:16Speaker 1: of my days. Nevertheless, having been highly favored of the
- 0:20Speaker 1: Lord in all my days, Yea, having had a great
- 0:23Speaker 1: knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God. Therefore
- 0:27Speaker 1: I make a record of my proceedings in my days. Yea,
- 0:31Speaker 1: I make a record in the language of my father,
- 0:34Speaker 1: which consists of the learning of the Jews and the
- 0:37Speaker 1: language of the Egyptians. And I know that the record
- 0:40Speaker 1: which I make is true, and I make it with
- 0:43Speaker 1: mine own hand, and I make it according to my knowledge.
- 0:47Speaker 1: For it came to pass in the commencement of the
- 0:49Speaker 1: first year of the reign of Zedekiah, King of Judah,
- 0:53Speaker 1: my father Lehi, having dwelt at Jerusalem in all his days,
- 0:58Speaker 1: and in that same year there came many prophets prophesying
- 1:02Speaker 1: unto the people that they must repent or the great
- 1:06Speaker 1: city Jerusalem must be destroyed. Wherefore he came to pass
- 1:09Speaker 1: that my father Lehi, as he went forth prayed unto
- 1:13Speaker 1: the Lord Yea even with all his heart in behalf
- 1:16Speaker 1: of his people. And he came to pass as he
- 1:19Speaker 1: prayed unto the Lord, there came a pillar of fire,
- 1:22Speaker 1: and dwelt upon a rock before him, and he saw
- 1:26Speaker 1: and heard much. And because of the things which he
- 1:28Speaker 1: saw and heard, he did quake and tremble exceedingly. And
- 1:33Speaker 1: he came to pass that he returned to his own
- 1:35Speaker 1: house at Jerusalem, and he cast himself upon his bed,
- 1:39Speaker 1: being overcome with the spirit and the things which he
- 1:42Speaker 1: had seen. And being thus overcome with the spirit, he
- 1:46Speaker 1: was carried away in a vision, even that he saw
- 1:48Speaker 1: the heavens open, and he thought he saw God sitting
- 1:52Speaker 1: upon his throne, surrounded with numberless concourses of angels in
- 1:56Speaker 1: the attitude of singing and praising their God. And came
- 2:00Speaker 1: to pass that he saw one descending out of the
- 2:02Speaker 1: midst of heaven, and he beheld that his luster was
- 2:06Speaker 1: above that of the sun at noonday. And he also
- 2:09Speaker 1: saw twelve others following him, and their brightness did exceed
- 2:13Speaker 1: that of the stars in the firmament. And they came
- 2:16Speaker 1: down and went forth upon the face of the earth.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And the first came and stood before my father and
- 2:22Speaker 1: gave unto him a book, and bade him that he
- 2:25Speaker 1: should read. And he came to pass that as he read,
- 2:28Speaker 1: he was filled with the spirit of the Lord. And
- 2:31Speaker 1: he read saying, woe well unto Jerusalem, for I have
- 2:35Speaker 1: seen thine abominations. Yea. And many things did my father
- 2:39Speaker 1: read concerning Jerusalem, that it should be destroyed, and the
- 2:43Speaker 1: inhabitants thereof many should perish by the sword, and many
- 2:47Speaker 1: should be carried away captive into Babylon. And he came
- 2:50Speaker 1: to pass that when my father had read and seen
- 2:53Speaker 1: many great and marvelous things, he did exclaim many things
- 2:57Speaker 1: unto the Lord, such as great and marvelous are thy works, O, Lord,
- 3:02Speaker 1: God Almighty, Thy throne is high in the heavens, and
- 3:06Speaker 1: thy power and goodness and mercy are over all the
- 3:09Speaker 1: inhabitants of the earth. And because thou art merciful, thou
- 3:13Speaker 1: wilt not suffer those who come unto thee that they
- 3:16Speaker 1: shall perish. And after this manner was the language of
- 3:19Speaker 1: my father in the praising of his God. For his
- 3:23Speaker 1: soul did rejoice, and his whole heart was filled because
- 3:27Speaker 1: of the things which he had seen Yea, which the
- 3:29Speaker 1: Lord had shown unto him. And now I, Nephi, do
- 3:34Speaker 1: not make a full account of the things which my
- 3:36Speaker 1: father hath written. For he hath written many things which
- 3:40Speaker 1: he saw in visions and in dreams. And he also
- 3:43Speaker 1: hath written many things which he prophesied and spake unto
- 3:47Speaker 1: his children, of which I shall not make a full account.
- 3:51Speaker 1: But I shall make an account of my proceedings in
- 3:54Speaker 1: my days. Behold, I make an abridgment of the record
- 3:58Speaker 1: of my father upon plates which I have made with
- 4:01Speaker 1: mine own hands. Wherefore, after I have abridged the record
- 4:05Speaker 1: of my father, then will I make an account of
- 4:08Speaker 1: mine own life. Therefore I would that ye should know
- 4:13Speaker 1: that after the Lord had shown so many marvelous things
- 4:15Speaker 1: unto my father Lehi yea concerning the destruction of Jerusalem. Behold,
- 4:21Speaker 1: he went forth among the people and began to prophesy
- 4:25Speaker 1: and to declare unto them concerning the things which he
- 4:28Speaker 1: had both seen and heard. And it came to pass
- 4:31Speaker 1: that the Jews did mock him because of the things
- 4:34Speaker 1: which he testified of them. For he truly testified of
- 4:37Speaker 1: their wickedness and their abominations, and he testified that the
- 4:41Speaker 1: things which he saw and heard, and also the things
- 4:45Speaker 1: which he read in the book manifested plainly of the
- 4:48Speaker 1: coming of the Messiah, and also the redemption of the world.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And when the Jews heard these things, they were angry
- 4:55Speaker 1: with him, yea, even as with the prophets of old,
- 4:58Speaker 1: whom they had cast out and stoned and slain. And
- 5:02Speaker 1: they also sought his life that they might take it away.
- 5:06Speaker 1: But behold, I Nephi will show unto you that the
- 5:10Speaker 1: tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom
- 5:13Speaker 1: he hath chosen because of their faith, to make them mighty,
- 5:17Speaker 1: even unto the power of deliverance. First Nephi chapter two.
- 5:23Speaker 1: For behold, he came to pass that the Lord spake
- 5:26Speaker 1: unto my father, yea, even in a dream, and said
- 5:29Speaker 1: unto him, blessed art thou Lehi, because of the things
- 5:33Speaker 1: which thou hast done, and because thou hast been faithful
- 5:37Speaker 1: and declared unto this people the things which I commanded
- 5:40Speaker 1: thee Behold, they seek to take away thy life. And
- 5:44Speaker 1: he came to pass that the Lord commanded my father
- 5:47Speaker 1: even in a dream, that he should take his family
- 5:50Speaker 1: and depart into the wilderness. And he came to pass
- 5:53Speaker 1: that he was obedient unto the word of the Lord.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Wherefore he did as the Lord commanded him. And he
- 6:00Speaker 1: came to pass that he departed into the wilderness. And
- 6:03Speaker 1: he left his house and the land of his inheritance,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and his gold and his silver, and his precious things,
- 6:10Speaker 1: and took nothing with him save it were his family,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and provisions and tents, and departed into the wilderness. And
- 6:18Speaker 1: he came down by the borders near the shore of
- 6:20Speaker 1: the Red Sea. And he traveled in the wilderness and
- 6:23Speaker 1: the borders which are nearer the Red Sea. And he
- 6:26Speaker 1: did travel in the wilderness with his family, which consisted
- 6:29Speaker 1: of my mother Soria, and my elder brothers, who were Layman,
- 6:33Speaker 1: Lemuel and Sam. And he came to pass that when
- 6:37Speaker 1: he had traveled three days in the wilderness, he pitched
- 6:40Speaker 1: his tent in a valley by the side of a
- 6:43Speaker 1: river of water. And he came to pass that he
- 6:45Speaker 1: built an altar of stones and made an offering unto
- 6:49Speaker 1: the Lord, and gave thanks unto the Lord our God.
- 6:52Speaker 1: And came to pass that he called the name of
- 6:54Speaker 1: the river Layman, and it emptied into the Red Sea.
- 6:58Speaker 1: And the valley was in the borders near the mouth thereof.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And when my father saw that the waters of the
- 7:04Speaker 1: river emptied into the fountain of the Red Sea, he
- 7:07Speaker 1: spake unto Layman sang Oh, that thou mightest be like
- 7:11Speaker 1: unto this river, continually running into the fountain of all righteousness.
- 7:16Speaker 1: And he also spake unto Lemuel, Oh, that thou mightest
- 7:19Speaker 1: be like unto this valley, firm and steadfast and immovable
- 7:24Speaker 1: in keeping the commandments of the Lord. Now this he
- 7:27Speaker 1: spake because of the stiff neckedness of Layman and Lemuel.
- 7:31Speaker 1: For behold, they did murmur in many things against their father,
- 7:35Speaker 1: because he was a visionary man, and had led them
- 7:38Speaker 1: out of the land of Jerusalem, to leave the land
- 7:41Speaker 1: of their inheritance, and their gold and their silver, and
- 7:44Speaker 1: their precious things, to perish in the wilderness. And this
- 7:48Speaker 1: they said he had done because of the foolish imaginations
- 7:52Speaker 1: of his heart. And thus Layman and Lemuel, being the eldest,
- 7:56Speaker 1: did murmur against their father. And they did murmur because
- 8:00Speaker 1: because they knew not the dealings of that God who
- 8:02Speaker 1: had created them. Neither did they believe that Jerusalem, that
- 8:07Speaker 1: great city, could be destroyed. According to the words of
- 8:10Speaker 1: the prophets, and they were like unto the Jews who
- 8:13Speaker 1: were at Jerusalem, who sought to take away the life
- 8:16Speaker 1: of my father. And it came to pass that my
- 8:18Speaker 1: father did speak unto them in the valley of Lemuel,
- 8:22Speaker 1: with power being filled with the spirit, until their frames
- 8:26Speaker 1: did shake before him, and he did confound them that
- 8:29Speaker 1: they durst not utter against him. Wherefore they did as
- 8:34Speaker 1: he commanded them, and my father dwelt in a tent.
- 8:38Speaker 1: And it came to pass that I Nephi, being exceedingly young,
- 8:42Speaker 1: nevertheless being large in stature, and also having great desires
- 8:46Speaker 1: to know of the mysteries of God. Wherefore I did
- 8:49Speaker 1: cry unto the Lord, and behold, he did visit me
- 8:53Speaker 1: and did soften my heart that I did believe all
- 8:56Speaker 1: the words which had been spoken by my father. Wherefore
- 9:00Speaker 1: I did not rebel against him, like unto my brothers.
- 9:04Speaker 1: And I spake unto Sam, making known unto him the
- 9:07Speaker 1: things which the Lord had manifested unto me by his
- 9:10Speaker 1: Holy Spirit. And came to pass that he believed in
- 9:14Speaker 1: my words. But behold, Laymen and Lemuel would not hearken
- 9:19Speaker 1: unto my words. And being grieved because of the hardness
- 9:22Speaker 1: of their hearts. I cried unto the Lord for them.
- 9:26Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto me, saying,
- 9:29Speaker 1: blessed art Thou, Nephi, because of thy faith, For thou
- 9:33Speaker 1: hast sought me diligently, with lowliness of heart. And inasmuch
- 9:38Speaker 1: as ye shall keep my commandments, ye shall prosper, and
- 9:42Speaker 1: shall be led to a land of promise, YEA even
- 9:45Speaker 1: a land which I have prepared for you. YEA a
- 9:48Speaker 1: land which is choice above all other lands. And inasmuch
- 9:52Speaker 1: as thy brethren shall rebel against thee, they shall be
- 9:55Speaker 1: cut off from the presence of the Lord. And inasmuch
- 9:58Speaker 1: as thou shalt keep my commandments, thou shalt be made
- 10:02Speaker 1: a ruler and a teacher over thy brethren. For behold,
- 10:06Speaker 1: in that day that they shall rebel against me, I
- 10:09Speaker 1: will curse them even with a sore curse, and they
- 10:12Speaker 1: shall have no power over Thy seed, except they shall
- 10:15Speaker 1: rebel against me also, And if it so be that
- 10:19Speaker 1: they rebel against me, they shall be a scourge unto
- 10:22Speaker 1: Thy seed, to stir them up in the ways of remembrance.
- 10:26Speaker 1: First Nephi chapter three. And it came to pass that
- 10:30Speaker 1: I Nephi returned from speaking with the Lord to the
- 10:33Speaker 1: tent of my father, and he came to pass that
- 10:36Speaker 1: he spake unto me, saying, behold, I have dreamed a
- 10:39Speaker 1: dream in which the Lord Hath commanded me that thou
- 10:43Speaker 1: and thy brethren shall return to Jerusalem. For behold, Laban
- 10:48Speaker 1: hath the record of the Jews, and also a genealogy
- 10:51Speaker 1: of my forefathers, and they are engraven upon plates of brass. Wherefore,
- 10:56Speaker 1: the Lord Hath commanded me that thou and thy brothers
- 11:00Speaker 1: should go unto the house of Laban and seek the records,
- 11:03Speaker 1: and bring them down hither into the wilderness. And now
- 11:07Speaker 1: behold thy brother's murmur, saying it is a hard thing
- 11:10Speaker 1: which I have required of them. But behold, I have
- 11:13Speaker 1: not required it of them, but it is a commandment
- 11:17Speaker 1: of the Lord. Therefore, go, my son, and thou shalt
- 11:20Speaker 1: be favored of the Lord, because thou hast not murmured.
- 11:24Speaker 1: And he came to pass that I Nephi said, unto
- 11:27Speaker 1: my father, I will go and do the things which
- 11:30Speaker 1: the Lord Hath commanded, For I know that the Lord
- 11:33Speaker 1: giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he
- 11:36Speaker 1: shall prepare a way for them, that they may accomplish
- 11:39Speaker 1: the thing which he commandeth them. And he came to
- 11:43Speaker 1: pass that when my father had heard these words, he
- 11:45Speaker 1: was exceedingly glad, for he knew that I had been
- 11:49Speaker 1: blessed of the Lord. And I, Nephi and my brethren
- 11:53Speaker 1: took our journey in the wilderness with our tents, to
- 11:56Speaker 1: go up to the land of Jerusalem. And he came
- 11:59Speaker 1: to pass that when we had gone up to the
- 12:01Speaker 1: land of Jerusalem, I and my brethren did consult one
- 12:05Speaker 1: with another, and we cast lots, who of us should
- 12:09Speaker 1: go in unto the house of Laban. And he came
- 12:12Speaker 1: to pass that the lot fell upon Layman, and Layman
- 12:16Speaker 1: went in unto the house of Laban. And he talked
- 12:19Speaker 1: with him as he sat in his house, and he
- 12:22Speaker 1: desired of Laban the records which were engraven upon the
- 12:25Speaker 1: plates of brass, which contained the genealogy of my father.
- 12:29Speaker 1: And behold, it came to pass that Laban was angry
- 12:33Speaker 1: and thrust him out from his presence. And he would
- 12:36Speaker 1: not that he should have the records. Wherefore he set
- 12:40Speaker 1: unto him. Behold, thou art a robber, and I will
- 12:44Speaker 1: slay thee. But layman fled out of his presence and
- 12:48Speaker 1: told the things which Laban had done unto us, And
- 12:51Speaker 1: we began to be exceedingly sorrowful. And my brethren were
- 12:54Speaker 1: about to return unto my father in the wilderness. But behold,
- 12:59Speaker 1: I set on them that as the Lord liveth and
- 13:02Speaker 1: as we live, we will not go down unto our
- 13:05Speaker 1: father and the wilderness until we have accomplished the thing
- 13:09Speaker 1: which the Lord hath commanded us. Wherefore, let us be
- 13:12Speaker 1: faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord. Therefore, let
- 13:16Speaker 1: us go down to the land of our father's inheritance.
- 13:19Speaker 1: For behold, he left gold and silver and all manner
- 13:23Speaker 1: of riches, and all this he hath done because of
- 13:26Speaker 1: the commandments of the Lord. For he knew that Jerusalem
- 13:30Speaker 1: must be destroyed because of the wickedness of the people.
- 13:33Speaker 1: For behold, they have rejected the words of the prophets. Wherefore,
- 13:38Speaker 1: if my father should dwell in the land after he
- 13:40Speaker 1: hath been commanded to flee out of the land, behold,
- 13:44Speaker 1: he would also perish. Wherefore it must needs be that
- 13:48Speaker 1: he flee out of the land. And behold, it is
- 13:51Speaker 1: wisdom and God that we should obtain these records that
- 13:55Speaker 1: we may preserve unto our children the language of our fathers,
- 13:59Speaker 1: and also that we may preserve unto them the words
- 14:02Speaker 1: which have been spoken by the mouth of all the
- 14:04Speaker 1: holy prophets which have been delivered unto them by the
- 14:08Speaker 1: spirit and power of God. Since the world began even
- 14:11Speaker 1: down unto this present time. And it came to pass
- 14:14Speaker 1: that after this manner of language, did I persuade my
- 14:17Speaker 1: brethren that they might be faithful in keeping the commandments
- 14:20Speaker 1: of God. And it came to pass that we went
- 14:23Speaker 1: down to the land of our inheritance, and we did
- 14:26Speaker 1: gather together our gold and our silver, and our precious things.
- 14:31Speaker 1: And after we had gathered these things together, we went
- 14:34Speaker 1: up again unto the house of Laban. And he came
- 14:37Speaker 1: to pass that we went in unto Laban and desired
- 14:40Speaker 1: him that he would give unto us the records which
- 14:43Speaker 1: were engraven upon the plates of brass, for which we
- 14:46Speaker 1: would give unto him our gold and our silver, and
- 14:49Speaker 1: all our precious things. And it came to pass that
- 14:52Speaker 1: when Laban saw our property, and that it was exceedingly great,
- 14:56Speaker 1: he did lust after it insomuch that he thrungt us
- 15:00Speaker 1: out and sent his servants to slay us, that he
- 15:03Speaker 1: might obtain our property. And he came to pass that
- 15:06Speaker 1: we did flee before the servants of Laban, and we
- 15:09Speaker 1: were obliged to leave behind our property, and it fell
- 15:13Speaker 1: into the hands of Laban. And it came to pass
- 15:15Speaker 1: that we fled into the wilderness, and the servants of
- 15:18Speaker 1: Laban did not overtake us, and we hid ourselves in
- 15:22Speaker 1: the cavity of a rock. And he came to pass
- 15:24Speaker 1: that Layman was angry with me, and also with my father,
- 15:28Speaker 1: and also was Lemuel, for he hearkened unto the words
- 15:31Speaker 1: of Layman. Wherefore Layman and Lemuel did speak many hard
- 15:36Speaker 1: words unto us their younger brothers, and they did smite us,
- 15:40Speaker 1: even with a rod. And he came to pass, as
- 15:43Speaker 1: they smote us with a rod, Behold, an angel of
- 15:46Speaker 1: the Lord came and stood before them, and he spake
- 15:49Speaker 1: unto them, saying, why do ye smite your younger brother
- 15:53Speaker 1: with a rod? Know ye not that the Lord hath
- 15:56Speaker 1: chosen him to be a ruler over you, and this
- 16:00Speaker 1: because of your iniquities. Behold, ye shall go up to
- 16:03Speaker 1: Jerusalem again, and the Lord will deliver Laban into your hands.
- 16:08Speaker 1: And after the angel had spoken unto us, he departed,
- 16:11Speaker 1: And after the angel had departed, Layman and Lemuel again
- 16:15Speaker 1: began to murmur, saying, how is it possible that the
- 16:18Speaker 1: Lord will deliver Laban into our hands? Behold, he is
- 16:22Speaker 1: a mighty man, and he can command fifty yea, even
- 16:26Speaker 1: he can slay fifty. Then why not us first Nephi
- 16:30Speaker 1: chapter four, And it came to pass that I spake
- 16:33Speaker 1: unto my brethren, saying, let us go up again unto Jerusalem,
- 16:37Speaker 1: and let us be faithful in keeping the commandments of
- 16:40Speaker 1: the Lord. For behold, he is mightier than all the earth.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Then why not mightier than Laban and his fifty yea,
- 16:48Speaker 1: or even than his tens of thousands. Therefore, let us
- 16:51Speaker 1: go up, let us be strong like unto Moses. For
- 16:55Speaker 1: he truly spake unto the waters of the Red Sea.
- 16:58Speaker 1: And they divided hither and thither, and our fathers came
- 17:01Speaker 1: through out of captivity on dry ground, and the armies
- 17:05Speaker 1: of Pharaoh did follow and were drowned in the waters
- 17:09Speaker 1: of the red sea. Now behold, ye know that this
- 17:12Speaker 1: is true. And ye also now that an angel hath
- 17:15Speaker 1: spoken unto you. Wherefore can ye doubt let us go up.
- 17:20Speaker 1: The Lord is able to deliver us even as our fathers,
- 17:24Speaker 1: and to destroy Laban, even as the Egyptians. Now, when
- 17:28Speaker 1: I had spoken these words, they were yet wroth, and
- 17:32Speaker 1: did still continue to murmur. Nevertheless, they did follow me
- 17:36Speaker 1: up until we came without the walls of Jerusalem. And
- 17:39Speaker 1: it was by night, and I caused that they should
- 17:42Speaker 1: hide themselves without the walls. And after they had hid themselves,
- 17:47Speaker 1: I Nephi, crept into the city and went forth towards
- 17:52Speaker 1: the house of Laban. And I was led by the spirit,
- 17:55Speaker 1: not knowing beforehand the things which I should do. Nevertheless,
- 17:59Speaker 1: I went forth, And as I came near unto the
- 18:02Speaker 1: house of Laban, I beheld a man, and he had
- 18:06Speaker 1: fallen to the earth before me, for he was drunken
- 18:09Speaker 1: with wine. And when I came to him, I found
- 18:12Speaker 1: that it was Laban. And I beheld his sword, and
- 18:15Speaker 1: I drew it forth from the sheath thereof, And the
- 18:19Speaker 1: hilt thereof was of pure gold, and the workmanship thereof
- 18:23Speaker 1: was exceedingly fine. And I saw that the blade thereof
- 18:27Speaker 1: was of the most precious steel. And he came to
- 18:30Speaker 1: pass that I was constrained by the spirit that I
- 18:33Speaker 1: should kill Laban, But I said in my heart, never
- 18:36Speaker 1: at any time have I shed the blood of man.
- 18:39Speaker 1: And I shrunk and would that I might not slay him.
- 18:42Speaker 1: And the spirit set unto me again. Behold, the Lord
- 18:46Speaker 1: hath delivered him into thy hands. Yea. And I also
- 18:50Speaker 1: knew that he had sought to take away mine own life. Yea.
- 18:54Speaker 1: And he would not hearken unto the commandments of the Lord.
- 18:57Speaker 1: And he also had taken away our property. And he
- 19:00Speaker 1: came to pass that the spirit set unto me again
- 19:03Speaker 1: slay him, for the Lord hath delivered him into thy hands. Behold,
- 19:08Speaker 1: the Lord slayeth the wicked to bring forth his righteous purposes.
- 19:13Speaker 1: It is better that one man should perish than that
- 19:16Speaker 1: a nation should dwindle and perish an unbelief. And now,
- 19:20Speaker 1: when I Nephi had heard these words, I remembered the
- 19:24Speaker 1: words of the Lord, which he spake unto me in
- 19:26Speaker 1: the wilderness, saying that inasmuch as thy seed shall keep
- 19:30Speaker 1: my commandments, they shall prosper in the land of promise. Yea.
- 19:35Speaker 1: And I also thought that they could not keep the
- 19:37Speaker 1: commandments of the Lord according to the Law of Moses,
- 19:40Speaker 1: save they should have the law and I also knew
- 19:44Speaker 1: that the law was engraven upon the plates of brass.
- 19:47Speaker 1: And again I knew that the Lord had delivered Laban
- 19:49Speaker 1: into my hands for this cause, that I might obtain
- 19:53Speaker 1: the records according to his commandments. Therefore I did obey
- 19:57Speaker 1: the voice of the Spirit and took Laban by them
- 20:00Speaker 1: hair of the head, and I smote off his head
- 20:03Speaker 1: with his own sword. And after I had smitten off
- 20:06Speaker 1: his head with his own sword, I took the garments
- 20:09Speaker 1: of Laban and put them upon mine own body, yea
- 20:13Speaker 1: even every whit, and I did gird on his armor
- 20:17Speaker 1: about my loins. And after I had done this, I
- 20:20Speaker 1: went forth unto the treasury of Laban. And as I
- 20:23Speaker 1: went forth towards the treasury of Laban, behold I saw
- 20:27Speaker 1: the servant of Laban who had the keys of the treasury.
- 20:30Speaker 1: And I commanded him in the voice of Laban, that
- 20:33Speaker 1: he should go with me into the treasury. And he
- 20:35Speaker 1: supposed me to be his master Laban, for he beheld
- 20:39Speaker 1: the garments and also the sword girded about my loins.
- 20:43Speaker 1: And he spake unto me concerning the elders of the Jews.
- 20:47Speaker 1: He knowing that his master Laban had been out by
- 20:51Speaker 1: night among them, and I spake unto him as if
- 20:54Speaker 1: it had been Laban. And I also spake unto him
- 20:57Speaker 1: that I should carry the engravings which were upon the
- 21:00Speaker 1: plates of brass, to my elder brethren, who were without
- 21:03Speaker 1: the walls. And I also bade him that he should
- 21:06Speaker 1: follow me. And he supposing that I spake of the
- 21:10Speaker 1: brethren of the church, and that I was truly that
- 21:12Speaker 1: Laban whom I had slain, wherefore he did follow me.
- 21:16Speaker 1: And he spake unto me many times concerning the elders
- 21:19Speaker 1: of the Jews. As I went forth unto my brethren
- 21:23Speaker 1: who were without the walls. And he came to pass
- 21:25Speaker 1: that when Layman saw me, he was exceedingly frightened, and
- 21:29Speaker 1: also Lemuel and Sam, and they fled from before my presence,
- 21:33Speaker 1: for they supposed it was Laban and that he had
- 21:36Speaker 1: slain me and had sought to take away their lives also.
- 21:40Speaker 1: And he came to pass that I called after them,
- 21:43Speaker 1: and they did hear me. Wherefore they did cease to
- 21:46Speaker 1: flee from my presence. And he came to pass that
- 21:49Speaker 1: when the servant of Laban beheld my brethren, he began
- 21:53Speaker 1: to tremble and was about to flee from before me
- 21:56Speaker 1: and return to the city of Jerusalem. And now I Nephi,
- 22:01Speaker 1: being a man large in stature, and also having received
- 22:04Speaker 1: much strength of the Lord. Therefore I did seize upon
- 22:08Speaker 1: the servant of Laban and held him that he should
- 22:11Speaker 1: not flee. And he came to pass that I spake
- 22:14Speaker 1: with him that if he would hearken unto my words,
- 22:16Speaker 1: as the Lord liveth and as I live, even so
- 22:20Speaker 1: that if he would hearken unto our words, we would
- 22:23Speaker 1: spare his life. And I spake unto him, even with
- 22:26Speaker 1: an oath, that he need not fear that he should
- 22:29Speaker 1: be a free man like unto us, if he would
- 22:32Speaker 1: go down in the wilderness with us. And I also
- 22:35Speaker 1: spake unto him, saying, surely the Lord hath commanded us
- 22:38Speaker 1: to do this thing, and shall we not be diligent
- 22:41Speaker 1: in keeping the commandments of the Lord. Therefore, if thou
- 22:45Speaker 1: wilt go down into the wilderness to my father, thou
- 22:48Speaker 1: shalt have place with us. And he came to pass
- 22:51Speaker 1: that Zaram did take courage at the words which I spake. Now,
- 22:55Speaker 1: Zorim was the name of the servant, and he promised
- 22:57Speaker 1: that he would go down unto the wilderness, unto all
- 23:00Speaker 1: father Yea. And he also made an oath unto us
- 23:03Speaker 1: that he would tarry with us from that time forth.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Now we were desirous that he should tarry with us
- 23:09Speaker 1: for this cause, that the Jews might not know concerning
- 23:13Speaker 1: our flight into the wilderness, lest they should pursue us
- 23:16Speaker 1: and destroy us. And he came to pass that when
- 23:19Speaker 1: Zaram had made an oath unto us, our fears did
- 23:22Speaker 1: cease concerning him. And he came to pass that we
- 23:25Speaker 1: took the plates of brass and the servant of Laban,
- 23:28Speaker 1: and departed into the wilderness, and journeyed unto the tent
- 23:32Speaker 1: of our father. End of First Nephi, Chapters one through four.
