- 0:17[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the Academy of the Cinema Hounds where we award the awards.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's time for our Oscar's 2026 Grand Finale.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: Hi, I'm Alicia, the cinematic vampire, just looking for a party.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm David, and I had no other choice.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_01]: but to join you for annual Oscars wrap up.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we wouldn't snob you.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, that's a bad snub, but we'll talk about it.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to talk about it.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to start with our reactions to the ceremony.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: And then it's time for our traditional ranking of the 10 Best Picture nominees.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: And we've decided this is going to be a full spoiler discussion this year.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: For those 10 Best Picture Films, we'll give you ample warning.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to exit stage left.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll also, I'll put a timestamp in the show notes if you want to jump past the spoiler parts to where we just recap what our rankings are, if you want to know.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: Just don't lower the microphone on me in the middle of my diatrops.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: No, you'll grab at it.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_00]: Fightboard jump up and down, pull on it.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: I saw all kinds of different reactions.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what to do with that.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: And then, at the end, we're going to throw a few extra films into the mix talk about where we would rank them amongst the rest.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: And now, the choice.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: So earlier, one of them may be no other choice, as Neon put it themselves, a snub above the rest.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: Let's start with the ceremony itself.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: General takes on, I mean, we had an earlier start.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: So it was a 3.5 hour runtime, but I have to say during our live chat, everyone was pleasantly surprised by it wrapping up, I think it was by 11 East Coast time.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, 11, 10, 30, they were announcing the final, like 10, 35, 10, 40 East Coast Daylight Time.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, wait, what, like, this seems early.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_01]: Why is this not 11, 30?
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: I was very pleased.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: And my 10 year old was actually able to see the Kpop team in hundreds of the Golden songs.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: Because they should not late.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_01]: they did and there's a lot of people like oh but think of the children but uh i don't know what you ten year old it was fine like she could handle it so.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, my, my thought is they did that one second and so that because they knew it was kind of wind.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: Right exactly.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's interesting the queuing the sequencing was, it was interesting, but I do appreciate the earlier time and I do appreciate, despite the young gentleman from Korea who got actually railroaded by the, by the, the credit of the music.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_01]: Right, otherwise everybody seemed to be on good behavior and you don't, there was no, no Brody, no Brody incidents this year.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Adrian Brody showed up and made a joke about himself.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_00]: That was very funny.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_00]: It was all his notes.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and then he threw it away and just announced they were.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_00]: So at least he had just sent a few more about it.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_00]: Anyone who doesn't remember, he gave like, I don't know, five minutes speech or something last year.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: and went on and on, and I'll be short about this and then you say, yeah, I think it might have actually even said a record if I recall correctly.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure it did.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, this year they were aggressive with people in terms of playing them off.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: They kept getting more and more aggressive as the night went on.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_01]: But I also think people were pretty mindful too.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't feel like anybody was taking a watch.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's why the audience started to turn on them, turning on them.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: You know, word people is because it didn't feel like people were going on, you know, it was just, they would let if they're a group.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: came on stage, you know, they would let one person speak and then immediately start playing the music.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: Like, no, just they only said like a 10 second thing so that they could each have a little bit of time.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_00]: Like give them this moment.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: Come on.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_01]: And it seemed like the folks that were in groups too.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: had all had plans like first used to be seconds right you know and a couple of people forgot their notes and they were scrambling but it was all quite it was nice it was like maybe they did a little bit of front and preparation for the nominees in case you win
- 4:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, please do this and that so that we're on time.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I really appreciated the it just felt tight overall that you like that I didn't like the cutting off of the stuff that one guy's family and and I also am on record is not being a fan of them snubbing three of the best song nominees for performing even if they didn't have a chance to win but I do have to say the two songs they did do I lied to you and golden
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: were great.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: And especially I lied to you that happened earlier in the night and it was really cool the way they brought that scene from sinners to life on stage.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, Misty Copeland, the ballerina was there and did her thing.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: Apparently she had hip replacement surgery in December and she's doing all that.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, there you go.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was a cool.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: I was a little disappointed in the sound.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think there was some production issues.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_01]: There was like a miss, a cute camera at one point.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_01]: And it seemed like they had some audio here there.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: Nothing that broke for me, the experience, or upset any sort of apple cards.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: But I just sort of noticed, like, oh, there's a little slot, a little slot in the room.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the sound did seem a little off during the K-pop performance, too.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: I've noticed a recent trends where like there was also some sound issues at the actor awards and elsewhere like Why are there suddenly sound issues at all the awards ceremony?
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: This is not a new thing.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_01]: Well, maybe it's because they're not filming as much in LA area and the crews are less experienced or they're not paying a well enough, I mean, who knows, maybe it's some sort of inshiftification happening.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_00]: But what was not inshiftified was having Conan back as host, at least according to me.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: What did you think of Conan and I was first?
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think, you know, some of the skits were,
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: You know, a little flat and stuff.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't understand the leaf blower skit at all.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what that was about.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_01]: And I otherwise thought, there's something that Conan can do that a lot of other people can't do.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: which is he's really aware of, I don't know what I can't do.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_01]: There's something he's good at that I enjoy is that he's really connected real time to the audience.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: So if there's unscripted things happening or there are little snafus or whatever, he can roll with it and involve the audience in a way that it doesn't feel like, oh, this is awkward, you know, he just has a way of being present
- 7:22[SPEAKER_01]: psychologically removed and reading the cue cards.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_01]: He's present with the audience, the whole audience, and I really like that.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_01]: And then his bits, the skits, the pre-film skits and stuff, those were all really clever, and I just enjoyed a lot of the creativity that he probably brought to the writing process, and working with his right, with whatever the writing crew was for this one.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I would say the opening where he dresses up as an Atlantis and then chases through a bunch of the nominated films, that was, yeah, that was great, fantastic.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's kind of be one of the best openings.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: And it was, I mean, it was really funny to watch it now that you can see it on YouTube will link it in the show notes that that's good, but when you watch it during the ceremony, you can hear people laughing and it was funny like they'd set up.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like one of the most emotional scene and hamnets and people just start laughing immediately like oh my god You're gonna run the next He shows up animated and K-pop demon hunters which was gloriously horrifying
- 8:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, it was clever.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: It was well thought out and it was well staged into actually have the live action aspect of it, you know, running running up on stage and stuff like that.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I missed it real time because I had one log in stuff where we were watching through.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: And then the, oh man, the red carpet coverage was a need.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, the, when the show was starting to start, it like went to something else and I'm like, hey, what's going on?
- 8:59[SPEAKER_01]: And so I had to go out and to the Hulu app, the standalone app, re-log in, do all the two of a stupid stuff or whatever.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_01]: And then when I finally got in, he had already started the hormonal log.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: And that's the thing.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_01]: So I missed the cold open.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_01]: So.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_01]: But otherwise the Hulu app worked great and not like last year.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: Oh man, it was so nice just to be able to watch the show.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: So you missed it, but you got to see it.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: I also I love the bid during that, where he speaks Norwegian and the kids are just patiently waiting while he does this time.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's good.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: Good.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: So clever and such a beautiful job of editing, stitching all that together.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what they filmed fresh and what they, you know, edited over the top of,
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I guess it was, it was a body double for him running in at the end and the rest was filmed in advance.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: Nice.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_01]: Nice.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_00]: That was good.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: Um, my other favorite Conan sketch was the Casa Blanca for second screen audiences.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: He did was sterling K-Brown, like, he's sterling K-Brown's like, World War II, huh?
- 10:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's the Hitler one, right?
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: when he came out in that white double-breasted uh... touch check and i was like what if with it with his pants i was like wait that's a weird costume change did you get caught short of something that wasn't till the bit started that i was like okay i get it but yeah it was fun to see sterling k-brown and and yeah his little bit so
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, apparently paradise is an nominated for any Oscar for pay.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_01]: Shout out to paradise.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: I was actually checking in with Joan and Nicole today to see if they want to do some like quick reactions to paradise episode since.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: Nice.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's I have to catch up on this new season.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_00]: Now the Oscars are over.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, you got some breathing room finally.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_01]: What did you think of the final skit?
- 10:49[SPEAKER_00]: I was glad that they did a final skit this year because it's so often, you know, like they do the best picture nominee.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: And then it's just like anti-commatic over, you know, and just people shuffling out.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_00]: And so it's nice that they closed out on the final skit that did happen to be related to the best picture winner.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: I guess they predicted that.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_00]: But I do wonder,
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: if people who hadn't seen one battle after another were confused by it, because it's actually massive spoiler for that film.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_00]: Sort of, yes, sort of is.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I wonder how many did they film alternate alternates endings, right?
- 11:26[SPEAKER_01]: You know, if you have different ones.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I could have otherwise it like it's appropriate to make a one battle reference regardless, but yeah.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was it was quite funny.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: I love that the whole I love the the whole host for life and then slapping on the Mr.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: Beast thing, which is YouTube reference and so that was because there was jokes throughout about like, oh, we got to make this younger with, you know, slang six seven, which I take already over.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: It was over before it began.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_00]: What did you think about the other presentations from the various presenters?
- 12:03[SPEAKER_01]: I think for me, for me, for me, the Segorni Weaver get away from her you bitch was the most cringe-inducing.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's an overused line and it's just, I don't know.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm a huge alien fan and aliens
- 12:24[SPEAKER_01]: And I just, I just felt it was a little too cheap.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_01]: It was a little too on the nose.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_01]: I will say that the grogoo puppetry, whoever was, you know, doing the puppetry on-group was really good.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: This whole shrug, like, I don't know.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: And all that kind of stuff that was quite cute.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_01]: But then maybe two of the fact that it was wrapped around with like, we had a lot of tie-ins, a lot of, you know, Disney was very much taking advantage of their position in tying in some stuff.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like, because what we had that, we had double wears Prada.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there was another one.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_01]: There was a but the price made stuff on the on the red carpet pre coverage was horrendous.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: It was I didn't say I was I watched I didn't watch the American feed because I'm not in the US so I was seeing so I was seeing completely different stuff from you guys when we were chatting in the free chat.
- 13:19[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, the, the, the, the bridesmaids tie ends were crazy and it was like they would have 30 seconds of content from the bread carpet and then they would go to two minutes of that and 30 seconds of content and the two minutes of ads and you're just like, I want to see these people and I want to hear them and I'm sure, you know, I don't know what feeds were out there, but the one that we were having to be watching was super, it was pretty rough and it was bridesmaids bridesmaids, bridesmaids, bridesmaids.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_01]: Right, no, or not Bridesmaid.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, sorry.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_01]: I'm mixing up Bridesmaid and Bachelorette.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: I apologize.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_01]: Bachelorette.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: Those are two different things.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: We got, yeah, it wasn't Bridesmaid.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_01]: It was we were getting flooded with Bachelorette ads.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I hate it.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, which is not even a movie.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: No, but it was cut.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: Apparently they were doing an episode right after this was over.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I got it.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: And I guess she was there at the Oscars or
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: But I liked the Bridesmeade's reunion on stage that was, I don't even remember which categories they were presenting, but they had notes from the audience.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: And the great part about, I would say, a number of these sketches, including this one, is how game the people in the audience were to play on, you know, they're like still in Skarsgard wrote this note, and he was like,
- 14:32[SPEAKER_01]: The one that didn't work was the new Leo meme.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: Like trying to create it in a loop.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: No, okay.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_00]: You know, did so.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: No, because, yeah, it felt like he wasn't prepared.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_01]: Or hadn't thought about it, or prepared for it.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_01]: Like you should have done some sort of over-exaggerated, you know, something or another, but he was kind of shrugged and it was good.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: Well, but that was fitting the meme.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yes.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: So that feeling when you didn't agree to this.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: Like, right.
- 15:00[UNKNOWN]: No.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but did you, I mean, you are famously, you call it the Miranda Presley, uh, perfect movie films.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_00]: Because of, uh, the devil wears Prada, where you excited to see Anna Winter giving Anne Hathaway shade when they present a costume this time.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_01]: It was very cute.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_01]: I liked the bit.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_01]: I was nervous because I didn't know what Anna Winter was going to do, but then what you put on her shades and like, you know, and then called her Emily, I was like, okay, this is all.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_01]: It was just off the nose, right?
- 15:33[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't too on it.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: It was just slightly off, and so it was fun.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_01]: And I have to say, I think one of, I think Tiana Taylor's
- 15:42[SPEAKER_01]: dress and I thought in half a way stress.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_01]: I think we're are two of the ones that I remember the most.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I thought her look was great.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_00]: Big thanks to Lisa for every time someone would mention a look in the chat, especially because I was watching a different feed and I probably wasn't the only one watching a different feed.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_00]: Lisa would
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: I guess to, to, we're just really quickly, and we can talk about it a little bit, maybe at the end of the segment is the Discord live chat with everybody, I think for me made the evening much more enjoyable.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, I think, yeah, a few people express that sentiment.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot more fun to share it with other people for sure.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think I would have gotten bored through some of this because there wasn't, you know, it was it was overall it was a pretty it was the Oscars right it was like it was neither high note this one was neither high nor low for me
- 16:41[SPEAKER_01]: In terms of like, oh my god, shock, you know, Jason Priezer or what have you.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_01]: It was just, it was nice.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_01]: There were some really some nice and mental moments.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_01]: There were some nice performances.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: There were some nice speeches.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_01]: In what was fun was, chitchatting with everybody throughout the course of the evening.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I've on the discord.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I definitely glad that we're doing that.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: And I just hope to see that sort of carry forward in years to come in our community.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_00]: And we started with chitchatting about the fashion.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_00]: What did you think about the classic glamour?
- 17:15[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you brought up a couple of the best dressed Tiana Taylor was one of the many wearing feathers.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: Was a big thing this year for women.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_00]: Jewel tones for men and women.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_00]: lots of old Hollywood glamour with the skirts and stuff, but also a very noticeable trend that almost every man there was wearing some kind of showy broach.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like they all decided this year, all of the stylists were like, we're gonna promote broaches across the board.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_01]: and was it Adrian Brody's was like some sort of I called it like a look like he took the fascinator off of I was that was that was Pedro Pascal's the feathery one and a other brody had like had this like twisted was to get diamondy okay yeah yeah it to me I was like it looked like he stole the queen's fascinator or something you know like it should be on somebody's head not on his broach it was bizarre
- 18:07[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, no, it's just going to say that I like that the the men were stepping out a little bit more.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_01]: We were seeing a lot of calmer variations in the tuxedo, we're seeing the broaches.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, yeah, glamouring up a little bit right don't just come in the.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_01]: and the standard Tuxedo is not just Tuesday.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_01]: What about a farmer?
- 18:30[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, I didn't earn a Tuxedo.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that's a 30 rock line or.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_01]: Pervert.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_00]: Could be down to Nabby line as well as well as well.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, respect to Javier Bardem who made a political statement with his approach.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_00]: And I have to say in general, like there were
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: I found a pleasant number balance of political acknowledgments and jokes, and I liked that nobody got bleeped for any of it.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_00]: I liked that Jimmy Kimmel showed up and you know, called CBS out.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_01]: And he had a little joke about Melania as well and about her movie, so I thought that was quite funny.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: There was a lot I liked about the ceremony.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: I liked how they showed clips.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_00]: When announcing the nominees, I don't know why they don't do that every year, but it's so appreciated, even though I've seen all the movies, I still like to see the clips.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_00]: And for the people who haven't seen all the movies, which is probably the majority of the audience,
- 19:38[SPEAKER_01]: I just think, yeah, with that on the flow, it all flowed really well.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_01]: I loved the way that they woven the best picture clip.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_01]: So when you come back from commercial, they do that.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_01]: I think the only thing it was kind of missing was the more of the musical numbers.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_01]: I know that would have pushed at the runtime, but I didn't think it was a little odd.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_01]: And then, yeah, I think you would have done everybody a favor if you'd thrown in golden.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_01]: earlier on in the evening.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_01]: And put the, I apologize.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_01]: What's the name of the one from sinners?
- 20:10[SPEAKER_00]: I like to you.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_01]: I like to you later in the evening.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: I felt that would have been more age-appropriate.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if flowy in some ways, but maybe they knew Golden was going to win.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's do that closer to the announcement.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_00]: But I don't know otherwise.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, wow, that was such a great center's performance.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_01]: And no, no, it goes to golden.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_01]: I suppose that's true.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_01]: That does kind of make sense.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_01]: Like, there's this weird game that we're playing.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_01]: Which is who knows how many people know and how they structure the show relative to that because they they they changed up the order of director and actor was yeah yeah well we'll save the two big films to talk about for last but on my
- 20:54[SPEAKER_00]: My supposition there was like, I was wondering, did they know that, um, or did they just assume that one battle was going to get director and picture and sinners was going to get actor.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_00]: So they're like, let's put actor later to keep the sinners crowd.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I can I get curating the flow a little bit to some degree.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's it's kind of like if you ever playing a role playing game right and you kind of pull back and and not kill all of your players right you or the bounce going a little too easy or so you kind of you know you you roll behind the screen and you nudge up the numbers a little bit.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_01]: Right, I get that you want to have a good experience and you want some dramatic tension, but at the same time.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_01]: how much knowing like how engineered do you want it?
- 21:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I think I would object if it was too over engineered.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_01]: If they knew who the winners were and then they staged the music and the things like that in that way.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean for sure, but there was this one year where they seemed to have made an assumption that totally backfired where they thought,
- 22:06[SPEAKER_00]: Chadwick Boseman was going to win post humorously, the best actor Oscar for Maury Denise Blackbottom, but into they saved that, but they actually put that award last after best picture, like it seemed like maybe they're going to have some tribute or something like that, but instead know Anthony Hopkins won for the father, which
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: was a very worthy performance and but then it just it was like he wasn't even there to collect his award and they just ended and I come back to play and yeah I think they that's a mistake they don't want to make again because I was really like right right right right
- 22:42[SPEAKER_01]: And I think there's always going to be that inherent tension of how much do we engineer this and how much do we allow natural drama to occur.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I get it.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, speaking of post-humus, what did you think of the by far, the longest sketch this year was a 15-minute in memor, in memoriam.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_00]: And so they had special tribute with, yeah, it was the longest.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_00]: They had Billy Crystal presenting a special tribute for Rob Reiner, Rachel McAdams, for Katherine Herron, Diane Keaton, and Barbara Streisen for Robert Redford.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_00]: And then obviously, you know, they put together the rest with, you know, other standouts like Val Kilmer getting a line in there.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_00]: That sort of thing.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's a tough thing to stitch together and who you include and don't include and who gets, you know, like, you know, Robert DeVal, like, didn't he deserve, you know, some bigger mentioned something.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_00]: Also got a line.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: I think that several lines.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_00]: He got a line more more than Malkoma.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_00]: I know interesting.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so you, I don't know, you could you could play that for for a while.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_01]: And I did find
- 23:54[SPEAKER_01]: the overall design and flow of it.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_01]: I appreciated the mixture of the photo montage, the clips and the live action.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I felt that it flowed.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_01]: I guess, like, well, I mean, evidence of my surprise, I didn't feel
- 24:14[SPEAKER_01]: that it was the longest.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_01]: So when you said that stat, I was like, oh, it was because it didn't, I didn't have the experience of like, oh my god, this is just dragging on and on.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: I was quite in live and via, I guess.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, no, I thought it was very tasteful this year.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of people appreciate that they weren't singing over it.
- 24:36[SPEAKER_00]: It did feel I know there were people upset about some snubs.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_00]: Well first of all, Brigitte Bardot was snubbed, but I think that was probably because She did not end her life in favor of the Academy do right some political choices
- 24:54[SPEAKER_01]: where she's still a member of the academy at the end.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I don't know, but she made some political choices that really upset people.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_00]: But then there were like, um, other people, uh, like Eric Dane, uh, and James Vanderbeek.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_00]: We're not included, but I because I suppose they were primarily known as TV stars, but they were also in movies, so then, yeah.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_01]: I suppose that kind of goes to the question of, are you a member of the academy?
- 25:19[SPEAKER_01]: And if you're not a member of the academy, how do you handle that?
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's tough when I would hate to be the vice president and charge of the end memory.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry, wherever they delegate that out.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_00]: It does feel like a high pressure segment for sure.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_01]: And it was a little surprised when
- 25:40[SPEAKER_01]: When, um, uh, Babs.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_01]: I just got her Babs then when I know she doesn't understand what she's trying to say when she's saying.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, when she's saying I was like, oh, it was this plan.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: It was this weird or is this impromptu or, like, I wasn't expecting it.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_01]: But it was, I think it was, I seem like a lot of people were.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was good.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_00]: That was good.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, who was someone was saying she's 86 now?
- 26:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like, wow.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_01]: So, is this a good time to plug R into the West podcast?
- 26:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think so.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_01]: So, we had been doing this thing for our 11Z podcast, which is a subscriber exclusive where we do our monthly movies, where subscribers get the vote on on movie, and we have a theme, and all this stuff.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_01]: And we keep doing.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_01]: I think yours, your Rob Riner is going to be the final one.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_01]: Where, well, I'm not final, but like sort of like we feel obligated to do an in memoriam for somebody who's passed.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I did a thing with Lisa and Brian, a couple of times, couple of our subscribers and big community, you know, people active in our community.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_01]: Lisa, who is a stage background and and Brian, who's a, they're both film buffs and Brian's story.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_01]: and where we did this sort of thing of just doing a filmography review before we do one of these you know film retrospectives for somebody who's passed away and we've spun that now into its own podcast called Into the West and we're still evolving the format but at one level it'll
- 27:29[SPEAKER_01]: uh... listener participation picking a final movie and then we watch and then review that movie and then we record that that review
- 27:36[SPEAKER_01]: And we've already did a Gene Hackman last year, but Lisa and Brian wanted to go back to Gene Hackman so that we're starting off with that.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_01]: They're kind of running the show.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just gonna, you know, I'm gonna be the host in the engineer and get all produced and everything like that.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_01]: But they're kind of setting the direction on this.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_01]: We have a channel on the Discord for it.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_01]: I think we're recording this Thursday night for the Gene Hackman one.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, so there'll be kind of two podcasts per, and I'm sure as other,
- 28:03[SPEAKER_01]: Unfortunately, we have a generation of directors and actors who are moving off into the west, and so we want to, yeah, I don't know, from a cinema standpoint, we wanted to acknowledge that, because for a lot of us, all of us have grown up with their movies and they've affected our, we know, the things that we've watched and that we've fallen in love with, and I don't know, it seems kind of like a
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: a creative way to process rather than just like oh bummer that person died let's like okay let's talk about it let's talk about their films let's talk about their legacy let's talk about the impact on the industry so yeah so it'll be fun and this is going to be a public podcast yeah so that's yeah because before we were doing it on eleven z's which is a subscriber only thing but now that frees up also eleven z's so we can do more exactly other themes
- 28:56[SPEAKER_01]: Right, so yeah, and Lisa and Brian are both passionate about film and are really into it and so they're digging into the research and watching movies and so yeah, it's I think it's a fun creative project especially one that in roles our community and that you know, we we do with our community as opposed to sort of at our community.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so we definitely want to hear if people have requests or if thoughts or feedback or they want to say something about any of these people to be included.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_00]: Please send your thoughts to lorhounds at the lorhounds.com.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_00]: I guess you haven't set up a new into the web.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_01]: I can't remember if I was going to set up an email or not, I should do that, but we do have a channel on the discord called into the west under the affiliate section, where you can do that, but yeah, I should set up, I should figure out we should figure out a clever thing for the email address.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_00]: We're just into the west.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I suppose the, sometimes you don't have to be clever.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's the best of people can just remember it.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_01]: Cool.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'm going to remember to take a quick break right now, and when we come back, we're going to talk about who actually wants them awards starting with the biggest surprises.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: Sounds like fun.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_00]: Be right back.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: Right, so just to set the stage, I found this in the figures interesting, that according to the most recent Academy figures, there are 11,126 members of the Academy of which 10,136 are active voters.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_00]: The body is still majority white in American, though demographics vary by branch.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_00]: It is 35% women, so still majority male, 22% from underrepresented communities in 21% international.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_00]: And the actor's branch remains the largest branch with 1,311 members.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_00]: And the actor's branch has been known as one of the biggest
- 31:12[SPEAKER_00]: voting brand block and that that affects things but I have to say in recent years other branches have been growing and the actor's branch has been diversifying but relatively it's not as large proportionately it's not as overpowering over the other branches anymore in terms of size.
- 31:32[SPEAKER_01]: I'm actually looking at their website right now and sort of looking at their leadership and such
- 31:41[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and just seeing who's who's guiding the organization these days.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_01]: Because I think she spoke a little bit and it was kind of interesting.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_01]: Like I was like, oh, I didn't know these things, all right.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it was just nice to hear.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_01]: from somebody from the academy that it wasn't just, like, I don't know if you watch the Olympics or FIFA or something like that, that the president's speeches are always just like, oh, dry and boring and uninteresting.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_01]: At least Howard Taylor's stuff was like, like, factual.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_01]: Like, oh, that's interesting.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't know about this about this organization.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_01]: So that was cool.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_01]: So I enjoyed that.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_00]: And the big studio winner I have to point out was Warner Brothers.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_00]: They matched the all-time record with the Levians.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_00]: And for no reason whatsoever, I feel the need to point out that Paramount slash guidance got zero nominations in the zero wins.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: Thought I'd bring that up.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: What a mess.
- 32:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be a mess.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, like how quickly is this merger going to go through and and we'll it ultimately be successful.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_01]: There's so many classes.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you're a peon regulator, states attorneys general and like all kinds of stuff.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_01]: So.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I fear for the industry in so ways because when we had that, when things were regulated because then we've gone through a period of two major deregulations that I don't remember the law is, but there was one about, I can't remember which the two were, anyway.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_01]: There's an allowance now of more consolidation and conglomeration where it's before, they kept it quite broken apart.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_01]: So that studios and producers and theaters all were separate.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_01]: So there was like a really vibrant marketplace as opposed to several singular, near singular, hyper-object companies that can
- 33:41[SPEAKER_01]: just dominate.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, that's a, you know, in the last rant over.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, but this is the thing that people have been talking about is that this year, I think this year was a particularly good year for movies.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of people seem to agree.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_00]: And it feels like a lot of, you know, the two biggest movies this year from an awards perspective were sinners in one battle.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_00]: both Warner Bros. movies and both movies that were controversial on release quote-unquote because the directors got too good of deals like how dare we let the people actually create the thing have rights and so that was you know and then you know they both got to thumb their nose at all the naysayers because they did well in the box office and they got the awards wrecked.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_00]: So a lot of people were seeing this as sort of a golden age that was kind of fueled by Warner Brothers and now people are like, well, is that golden age over?
- 34:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_01]: And we don't know what it's begun.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_01]: And we don't know what the elephants are going to.
- 34:42[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, we're going to leave HBO alone.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to leave CNN alone.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, come on.
- 34:45[SPEAKER_00]: That's, you know, corporate as far as I can throw them.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_01]: Boy, you know, corporate executives are going to incorporate executive, right?
- 34:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know, who knows what, who knows what we're in stake for.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, that's interesting that Warner Brothers
- 34:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's a good job.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so 11 wins.
- 35:02[SPEAKER_00]: Like I said, we'll talk about one battle on sinners at the end, but the 11th win was for kind of a surprise.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_00]: You seem surprised by it.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_00]: I was less so because of because she won the actors award, but Amy Madigan won to the supporting actress race, a very competitive supporting actress for playing ant Gladys in weapons.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_00]: which it's been pointed out that the supporting actor winners are often villains and I never really thought about that before.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that would be an interesting dive into going back and looking.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_01]: That would be a fun pod.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so that was, I mean, I think the Amy Madigan win was also in parts, you know, a career win, but yeah, she also she played one of the most memorable characters of this year and she played it in a unique way.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think anyone else could have done.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_01]: And a horror film, right?
- 36:02[SPEAKER_01]: And a horror film.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, kind of.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's where I was surprised is because I wasn't thinking of weapons as an Oscar nominee film, because my frame has been narrow of what is an Oscar nominee in film.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_01]: And so yeah, so they widened my frame a little bit.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I think you're right that there is a, sometimes the Academy is going to acknowledge a body of work in a single award.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm, because when I was looking at the other supporting actresses, I was like, oh, man, this isn't the tough one.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_00]: No, it was and at the precursors at every award show, someone else was winning the award.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_00]: It was like that with a lot of speaking of horror.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_00]: The documentary category was also like that.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_00]: Just, yeah, and everyone was predicting that there was the odds were overwhelmingly in the perfect neighbor's favor.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I'll say, I did badly of my prediction games here because I hope, I hope, dictated sinners throughout.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_00]: That didn't pan out for me.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_01]: You were putting it into the universe.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_00]: But one category I did get right is that I guessed that Mr. Nobody against Putin would win over the perfect neighbor because the perfect neighbor is more of a prestige true crime
- 37:23[SPEAKER_00]: And Mr. Nobody against Putin is sort of a quirky take on, you know, just like, this is what propaganda and indoctrination looks like, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta
- 37:38[SPEAKER_01]: They give end speech, that film has a little bit of a spin around it too.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_01]: I heard some other podcast talking, they were kind of scratching their heads at that movie.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_01]: So really, yeah, I don't have a, I don't have a good read on it, so I can, I shouldn't say too much more because I'm really uneducated, but I was just listening to some people talk about it.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, huh, I didn't, I didn't catch that, but I didn't track those categories.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_01]: So I shouldn't speak.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I don't know.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I know there.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_00]: There's another one.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_00]: There's a five and a half hour documentary called my undesirable friends that part one last era in Moscow.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_00]: And that is about the same.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_00]: set of it's it covers about the same period in Russia, you know, that's leading through the start of the Ukraine war and how that changed.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_00]: Everything things were already changing and then that really changed things.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_00]: And a lot of people wanted my undesirable friends to be the nominee here and I feel like Mr. Nobody against Putin got some backlash for that.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_00]: But Mr. Nobody against Putin is from a completely
- 38:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's, I think it's a much more accessible documentary because it's shorter for one.
- 38:50[SPEAKER_00]: But it's also, yeah, like I said, it has that, that more playful quality and maybe some people rubbed up against that.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_00]: But when Rebecca June Lane and I were talking about it in the documentaries episode, we both agreed that we liked that.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 39:04[UNKNOWN]: Mm.
- 39:04[UNKNOWN]: Okay.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_00]: But it does mean that Gita Gambier, she is a documentary director who was nominated twice this year.
- 39:12[SPEAKER_00]: One was for the perfect neighbor, which everyone assumed she was going to win and obviously she didn't.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_00]: And then the other one was for a dark short, the devil is busy.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_00]: which would have been my pick to win the Doc shorts, perhaps, other than that, or the Brett Renault one.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_00]: But all the empty rooms was, indeed, the favorite in that category, which is about filming the rooms of children who have been killed in school shooting incidents.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, just a bundle of joy, the Doc categories.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_00]: But so it means get again, beer, double nominated,
- 39:51[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of people like me have her name now tattooed in their brains.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll be watching out for her next documentary.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's so good.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think though probably the biggest funnest surprise was the tie.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_01]: So that was not interesting.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_00]: We had it in the live action category where I loved Kumail Nonjiani was the presenter.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_00]: I love the way he handled it.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_00]: He's just, you know, with these presenters, they're up there not because they are improv comedians, but because they're like in movies and famous for that.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_01]: Right, they're a famous face.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but sometimes you get lucky with someone like Camille Nangiani, who can do both, who is actually is like quick on his feet and witty.
- 40:36[SPEAKER_00]: And so the way he handled the whole thing was really funny and I like it's ironic that the short film Oscar is going to take twice as long as they both had to give speeches.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_01]: I was funny.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_01]: and they wonder how much they prepared him to say, hey, like, this is in our eyes.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he was surprised with his instructions.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the thing there was instructions in there.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_00]: There was like, yeah, name one and then let them speak and then the rest had to be in.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_00]: But as soon as they named the two favorites to win were the singers and two people exchanging saliva.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_00]: So as soon as they said it's a time like it's going to be that was still.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_00]: which I'm glad that they both got to win, because anyone who's been listening to my short film episodes knows that I've been championing both of those since December.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_01]: Nice.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_00]: and the two people exchanging saliva crew has been especially lovely, just in general.
- 41:32[SPEAKER_00]: So it's just really happy to...
- 41:35[SPEAKER_01]: I just put two people exchanging saliva into a certain, particularly well-used search engine.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_01]: And a little when the page opened up, a little statue of the Oscars like rolled up.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_01]: So you know, go to that one big search engine and put it in a winner's name as you would happens.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so yeah, if you, you can watch both of those quite easily, the singers is on Netflix now and two people exchanging saliva is on the New Yorker YouTube channel, so I will link to the latter in the show notes, but I definitely, there's short films.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_00]: I definitely recommend watching them both and two people exchanging saliva.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's probably being me, I know.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's a memorable title.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_00]: But it's probably being made into a feature.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, interesting.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_00]: Alex Anderson and Natalie Mustietta, the ones who made it, they have been suggesting that there have been conversations about that.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_00]: Cool.
- 42:38[SPEAKER_01]: How often does that happen?
- 42:39[SPEAKER_01]: Not as often as a tie.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, no, the shorts are made into features.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_00]: It happens.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, does it?
- 42:47[SPEAKER_00]: OK. Yeah, because a lot of the shorts are proof of concept.
- 42:49[SPEAKER_00]: That wasn't the case in this.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_00]: It was kind of they were actually approached by the gallery of Aetit in Paris.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_00]: OK. Can you make a film in this space?
- 42:58[SPEAKER_00]: And then so they, yeah, that this is what they came up with.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_00]: Cool.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I do wish that they could have had a tie on the animation side.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_00]: The girl who cried Pearls was also one that I was championing in the, you know, top short episodes, but I do wish you could have tied with retirement plan.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_00]: I know my mom was bummed about that when I showed her retirement plan over the holidays and she loved it.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_00]: Got it.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_01]: Well, all of this is starting to make me think maybe next year.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that I can do a full death race, but I was like, I should try to watch a few more of these next year.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I take that one.
- 43:33[SPEAKER_01]: Especially short, especially yes.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the live action shorts category is especially a good one too, because yeah, they're all short and they all.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, this year was especially good year for it.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_00]: But this is the seventh tie in Oscar history.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_01]: rights.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody was surprised.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_01]: What a tie.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_00]: I should remember the last one was in 2013.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_00]: And once it was mentioned, I was like, oh, I do kind of remember if I wasn't like, okay.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_00]: So let's go through the from the beginning.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_00]: The first one was in 1932 at the fifth ceremony.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_00]: Best actor tie between Frederick March for Dr. Jackal Mr. Hyde and Wallace Beary for the champ.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_00]: But apparently, at the time, the rule was if the votes were within three votes of each other, they would be declared a tie just because, you know, okay, for counting out.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_00]: But now that that happened, they're like actually never again.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_00]: Now you have to have an exact same count of votes.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 44:37[SPEAKER_00]: So the next time that happened was 1950, with best documentary shorts, and then it happened again in 1969 when this is a famous one, it was a best actress tie between Catherine Hepburn for the Lion and Winter.
- 44:50[SPEAKER_00]: So she's nearing the underwear career and
- 44:53[SPEAKER_00]: Barbara Streisand for speaking of for funny girl.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_00]: So this is she was at the time she was a newcomer to to the movies And this was her first feature film and it was controversial that she was already made a member of the Academy And so was able to cast a vote which presumably tied it But that's the moment that the famous hello gorgeous her talking to her statue.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_00]: That's the moment that came from okay
- 45:22[SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah, 1987 was a tie-in-best documentary feature, 1995 was in best live-action short, so same, same categories this year.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_00]: And this one is notable because the tie was between two films called Trevor, and Franz Kafka's, it's a wonderful life.
- 45:43[SPEAKER_00]: I have watched the latter one because it was made by Peter Capaldi, whom some might better know as the doctor.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and yeah, that's was like how he kind of got started and and you can find all the interviews of him saying like we didn't even have money to get to California to attend the awards and so Oscar's history and then yeah 2013 was the last one sound editing between zero dark 30 and skyfall.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: Interesting.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of except for that one actress one I spoke or and best actor that very first one.
- 46:14[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, it's all kind of, what do you call them?
- 46:18[SPEAKER_01]: Not to the level of the elements below.
- 46:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 46:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 46:22[SPEAKER_01]: So interesting.
- 46:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it was, it was a, yeah, just a feel good moment, you know, you can feel good.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_00]: The twice as many people get to be happy in that category.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, unlike a, yeah, RIP, all the rest of the film.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_00]: So there were 15 nominated movies, 14 of them won awards.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_00]: So that means, across 24 categories.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_00]: So that means 36 different didn't, 36 didn't.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_00]: So RIP to the 19 non-winning docs, shorts, and animated films to the 10,
- 46:56[SPEAKER_00]: single category nominees.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_00]: I still thank you make up category for nominating the ugly step-sister and cocoo.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_00]: They shall always be Oscar-nominated films and they deserve it a lot more than just that.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I should say another single nominee film was Diane Warren's relentless, which means that Diane Warren now holds the record for 17 nominations, the most nominations with
- 47:22[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and then yeah, there, there is seven multi nominees that blanked Marty Supreme, Bugonia, the secret agent, train dreams.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_00]: It was just an accident, blue moon and surat.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_01]: And it's, that's what's going to happen when you've got to get your films.
- 47:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you know, sucking up all of the, the oxygen, so to speak.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I mean, I guess the biggest surprise there, well, who wasn't even a surprise by the time people thought Marty Supreme might get one for Timothy Sheldon made by the time of the ceremony.
- 47:55[SPEAKER_00]: We were like, nah, that's not happening.
- 47:59[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, tomorrow day.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, or people hoped maybe train dreams would take cinematography, but I'm glad we'll get to that.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_00]: Right, we'll get there.
- 48:08[SPEAKER_00]: I got the went the way it did.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_00]: And we also had some expected wins, confirmed Frankenstein won.
- 48:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's three production design categories that were predicted.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_00]: K-pop, demon hunters took home both of its nominations for animated feature and song.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_00]: Jesse Buckley won for Hamlet for Best Actress, and she's apparently the first Irish winner in that category.
- 48:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was interesting.
- 48:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I saw a headline in an Irish newspaper about that.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_00]: Sentimental value took home international film, but nothing else, but at least it took home that, because there was worry that the secret agent might get that one.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_00]: Avatar Fire and Ash, of course, took VFX, but, as expected, not costumes, which Frank ensigned it, and F1 did indeed get sound.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_00]: It would have blanked without that if that had gone to say Serat, but didn't get the editing nomination it had, with that it was thought it might be likely for.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_00]: But that brings us to who's eaten up all those awards.
- 49:10[SPEAKER_00]: We're 10 of them went to the two biggest films, one battle after another, and sinners.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_00]: One battle, of course, the big winner of the night winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn, Best Film Editing, and Best Casting.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_00]: That one was a surprise.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I guess the only one that was
- 49:36[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to root against Sean Penn and I know like we found out he was actually in Ukraine talking to Zelensky, but you know what he could have been on stage talking about Ukraine and maybe that would actually make an impact.
- 49:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I felt that that that was the was it the little point of the evening it was the most kind of like really dude, you know, all of these people.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: voted for you and I get you're doing what you want to do and that's who you are right here you're always sort of challenging convention that's been your life's you know that's how we know you through your life but you could have sent a message like hey I know the Oscars are on this night
- 50:23[SPEAKER_01]: In case I do win because there's a good chance that I will, hey everybody, sorry, I can't be there tonight, you know, Karen could have read it.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, I mean you crane and don't forget that you crating people and have a great night.
- 50:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like something like something very, very simple and tasteful.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_01]: But otherwise it was just everybody was just kind of like,
- 50:43[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, fuck you then, right?
- 50:45[SPEAKER_01]: He's kind of hard for the exploitive.
- 50:46[SPEAKER_00]: No, I mean, to be honest, I wanted anyone else in the category to win.
- 50:50[SPEAKER_00]: Also because I liked the other performances a lot, but I don't know if you're going to win.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_01]: Be gracious about it.
- 50:57[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry.
- 50:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it's his third Oscar.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_00]: And I liked Cure and Coke and his response.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_00]: You can count on him to just be like, he just shrugs and be like, he's like, couldn't be here this evening or didn't want to.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_01]: Or didn't want to.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_01]: And that's fine, dude.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want to be there.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_01]: I get it.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_01]: I go to things where I'm like, boy, I don't really don't want to be here, but you be gracious, right?
- 51:20[SPEAKER_01]: And people people voted for you.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_01]: Right, you know, you could at least acknowledge that aspect.
- 51:29[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, and I'm sad for Delroy Lindo.
- 51:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_01]: Is that an amazing career and who was there?
- 51:35[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, didn't get the acknowledgement that.
- 51:38[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 51:38[SPEAKER_00]: I would have much rather it went to him or to, um, Stella and Scarlett's guard or Jacob Lord, even, you know.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 51:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, Benicio is like, why is Benicio in this supporting people that don't like that's a lot of people's favorite part of the day and yeah, yeah, I wouldn't It I would prefer that as well, but I I guess I would have if I were to rank of who I wanted to win in that moment I would have liked it to be Delroy Lendo followed by Stella and Skarsgard
- 52:09[SPEAKER_01]: who had significant supporting roles in both of their movies, where we used to use like a kind of an... Well, a lot of people call category fraud for Stelensgarth's garden.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe that kind of... Well, right, that's best actor, right?
- 52:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 52:22[SPEAKER_00]: Well, did he should have been in best actor instead of supporting?
- 52:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:27[SPEAKER_00]: Because he was on screen basically as much for an electric guitarist.
- 52:31[SPEAKER_00]: Not a rent, right?
- 52:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the best actress, nominee.
- 52:35[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, best actor went to, that was one of sinners for awards, Michael B. Jordan.
- 52:41[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, as his first Oscar, but it makes, he's only the six black actor to win this category ever, and he named dropped all the other ones before, plus Halle Berry.
- 52:52[SPEAKER_00]: Sydney, Portie, Denzel, Washington, Jamie Fox, Forest, Whitaker, and Will Smith.
- 52:58[SPEAKER_00]: So I thought there's a lot of classy speeches
- 53:03[SPEAKER_01]: Like, that's prepared, that's thought out.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of know what I want to say and who I want to acknowledge.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_01]: So I appreciated that he did the work.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_01]: He prepared for the eventuality and good on him.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_01]: And that shows a measure of character, right?
- 53:20[SPEAKER_01]: And why he's deserving of the award.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_01]: On so many levels, on so many different levels.
- 53:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I know a lot of people are excited about PTA getting his awards.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_00]: No, he's I got to he's got three now, um, but four did he get for it?
- 53:36[SPEAKER_00]: No, anyway, but Ryan Kougler also got his first academy award.
- 53:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, which is great for screenplay, which is really great.
- 53:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_00]: he would have been the first black director to win just saying uh but he did he's the second filmmaker black filmmaker to win original screenplay so that's because it was uh uh cord uh for a marathon yeah for a marathon fiction yeah yeah a couple years ago i remember that
- 54:02[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, wait, no.
- 54:03[SPEAKER_00]: That was adapted though, right?
- 54:04[SPEAKER_01]: Was that adapted?
- 54:05[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, okay.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_01]: I chose it.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_01]: So much of this just gets in and out my brain.
- 54:11[SPEAKER_00]: So like, I mean, even I pay a tank, I pay really good attention to this, but still, that's a lot of stats.
- 54:18[SPEAKER_00]: I used to have a much more idetic memory, but no longer.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_01]: mean that spice tea.
- 54:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, or I don't know memory chip or spice tea.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_00]: No, yeah, but we did um, but I was really excited about the sinners other two wins were best original score for Ludwig Gordonson.
- 54:35[SPEAKER_00]: This is his third Oscar after winning for Black Panther and Oppenheimer.
- 54:40[SPEAKER_00]: But for me, this is the one that I most wanted him to have.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_00]: I was actually rooting for someone else, the Oppenheimer, but this one, I'm so glad it wasn't anyone else.
- 54:52[SPEAKER_00]: And then cinematography, it was so deserved for autumn-drilled archipel, but it also makes her the first woman in history to win this category, which is insane.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's insane and it's great at the same time.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_01]: Like wait what?
- 55:06[SPEAKER_01]: And okay, cool.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_01]: I know you know.
- 55:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I really, again, talk about classy speeches.
- 55:16[SPEAKER_01]: And I think this is somebody else's trick and some other people have used this a couple of times now where they ask people to stand up that are involved with a show in the production and stuff.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_01]: and having, having all the women stand up, but I just thought that was like that was very cool.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_01]: She was well, you know, you've talked about, like there was just a genuineness of her, like seeing her nervous, but seeing her claim her power and owned the stage in that moment that just seemed very authentic to me.
- 55:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I was just like, oh, I really appreciate what she brought to the stage that night.
- 55:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, everyone was super classy, super classy.
- 56:01[SPEAKER_00]: Did you have any thoughts, more thoughts about the winners and such before we get into our spoiler rankings?
- 56:07[SPEAKER_01]: No, I felt overall, I think, yeah, it wasn't, it felt...
- 56:12[SPEAKER_01]: Not like it didn't feel like a crazy year.
- 56:14[SPEAKER_01]: I guess as was the way I'm trying to say it.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't feel like there was many upsets But it felt like there was enough.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_01]: Ooh drama and the thing here and there that things were kind of fun So yeah, it was and it all like we said when smoothly, so I was was a pretty good year overall I think
- 56:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was, I think it was a year of the most tight races in my memory where, yeah, there were a lot of categories were like, Ooh, which ways are going to go.
- 56:41[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so it was exciting in that regard.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, I'm still like my high was, uh, was it 2022 when everything everywhere all at once, one in the whole bunch of awards?
- 56:54[SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm.
- 56:55[SPEAKER_00]: And that's remains one of my favorite movies ever to have been made, and I was obviously hoping for that this year because sinners is the first movie I felt like that about since everything everywhere all at once.
- 57:10[SPEAKER_00]: So for me, it was at the end of the night, it was a kind of
- 57:13[SPEAKER_00]: But the Paul Thomas Anderson films, fans, they are obviously eaten well after that.
- 57:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's long as they're gracious about it.
- 57:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, exactly.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_01]: And Ryan's got a, you know, this is going to really open even more for his lawyer.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_01]: And he's going to bring a lot of people with him.
- 57:35[SPEAKER_01]: And
- 57:37[SPEAKER_00]: And next time he gets the overdue narrative, okay, but the thing is I just hope the problem with this overdue narrative thing is I just don't think this was Paul Thomas Anderson's best film and this is when keeps happening I felt the same about Oppenheimer like I love Chris for Nolan that's not my favorite film of his, but it's like it keeps getting paid for it and I'm like I don't want Ryan Kugler to win for a film.
- 57:59[SPEAKER_01]: I like less than sinners, you know, right.
- 58:06[SPEAKER_01]: And then a lot of people were saying that about Timothy, like was it his year or not and it's like, no, bro, it wasn't.
- 58:11[SPEAKER_01]: You're just getting started.
- 58:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 58:13[SPEAKER_00]: He's just 30.
- 58:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's fine.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 58:16[SPEAKER_01]: And we could talk about the film, our opinions on the films would get to that next section here.
- 58:21[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I don't know that that was an Oscar-winning performance.
- 58:25[SPEAKER_01]: It was a good performance.
- 58:26[SPEAKER_01]: It was a just sort of nomination, but that was not a winner for me.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Michael B. Jordan literally played two characters, two people in the layman.
- 58:36[SPEAKER_00]: I keep learning new fun facts.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_00]: The latest thing I learned is that apparently he, I didn't notice this, but so stack is the more jovial twin.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_00]: He's the one who's only wearing red and smiling.
- 58:49[SPEAKER_00]: And smoke is the more serious pensive twin who wears blue.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_00]: And there's all these things they did to differentiate between them, like in the way they edited and things like that,
- 58:58[SPEAKER_00]: Apparently, he also held his face differently so that only stack would have dimples and smoke would never have dimples.
- 59:06[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 59:08[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_01]: That's tough.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_01]: That's that's work.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_01]: That's he's doing work.
- 59:12[SPEAKER_01]: He's doing work, right?
- 59:13[SPEAKER_01]: He's literally literally improving his craft at that kind of level.
- 59:18[SPEAKER_01]: And you have to think of long shooting days and complex setups for doing that two person kind of stuff.
- 59:25[SPEAKER_01]: to have that presence of mine to remember which character, that's a lot, I give him a lot of credit for that.
- 59:30[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah.
- 59:31[SPEAKER_01]: Or I should, it's not for me to give him credit.
- 59:34[SPEAKER_01]: I could say as a, I can appreciate his effort that he put into it.
- 59:40[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 59:41[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 59:41[SPEAKER_01]: I thank you.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_00]: Because we'll talk about which of these films spoke to each of us.
- 59:47[SPEAKER_00]: Right, our personal enjoyment, yes, yeah, after a quick break and just a warning when we come back, we are going to be talking spoilers for the 10 best picture nominees, but
- 1:00:02[SPEAKER_00]: If you just want to hear our rankings, I will put a timestamp in the notes so you can jump to that right now and just hear the rankings without the spoilers.
- 1:00:11[SPEAKER_00]: But for those of you who want to hear our full thoughts on the movies, all the details involved, stick around.
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be right back.
- 1:00:32[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so we have each prepared our lists.
- 1:00:35[SPEAKER_00]: We're ranking from 10 up to one.
- 1:00:38[SPEAKER_00]: So we're starting with our least favorite best picture nominee and ending with our favorite best picture nominee.
- 1:00:43[SPEAKER_00]: Again, we are opening the spoiler can of worms right now.
- 1:00:46[SPEAKER_00]: So jump ahead to the timestamp if you're not ready to hear that.
- 1:00:50[SPEAKER_00]: But let's start with David, what is your number 10 ranking?
- 1:00:55[SPEAKER_01]: Frankenstein.
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:00:57[SPEAKER_01]: Do you want to say more?
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_01]: I did not enjoy this movie in the least bed and we should like I just want to echo in preference again personal This is personal enjoyment and this is the movie that I enjoyed the least sure and I I just felt that the I there was nothing new or Interesting in the story for me.
- 1:01:20[SPEAKER_01]: I felt it was over stylized
- 1:01:23[SPEAKER_01]: the I just didn't I didn't vibe with it and I kind of skipped around and as I sort of skipped forward it was like yeah okay okay okay okay like I got it I understand you know and and I just I didn't feel it was a best picture film for me so I if I could have unranked it I might have done that.
- 1:01:45[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's, I mean, that's going to be our question next time.
- 1:01:47[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't have enough other films to, to backfill.
- 1:01:50[SPEAKER_01]: I only have one extra film that I could really backfill into a best picture in all of them.
- 1:01:54[SPEAKER_00]: So fair enough.
- 1:01:55[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:01:55[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:01:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:01:58[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, I'm, I'm surprisingly, I should say I've ranked Frankenstein higher, so I'll hold my thoughts for that.
- 1:02:04[SPEAKER_00]: But I'll say my number 10 ranking, and again, just personal preference.
- 1:02:09[SPEAKER_00]: chill everybody don't ask Brazil sit down it's the secret agent and I should say okay so I
- 1:02:19[SPEAKER_00]: felt so bad for not enjoying Brazil's film this year.
- 1:02:23[SPEAKER_00]: And the reason why, just briefly, the reason why I didn't enjoy it so much, is that for me, it was like this odd mishmash of like, it just felt chaotic, which I suppose is Brazilian in a way, but for example, the whole thing about Wagner Morris' character, being, you know, he's going by the name Marcelo, but his real name is Armando.
- 1:02:49[SPEAKER_00]: And they just brought the entire film to a screeching halt like five times to make sure we understood that.
- 1:02:58[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what I was thinking of when they did that Kassa Blanca Skid about, you know, movies for seconds, readers.
- 1:03:07[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah.
- 1:03:08[SPEAKER_00]: But then at the same time, there were other things that they just didn't explain in the film at all that I saw, you know, in reviews,
- 1:03:18[SPEAKER_01]: That will give my secret agent notes now and then when we get to that section we'll just jump forward if that if you want to do that or did you want to
- 1:03:26[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to say something go ahead.
- 1:03:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I figured I've got a ranked higher I'll but my notes my thoughts on my notes were my wife and I watched it together She really enjoyed it.
- 1:03:38[SPEAKER_01]: I enjoyed it as well.
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_01]: I thought Wagner Moro is great and I'm excited to see him in future It was a beautiful film.
- 1:03:45[SPEAKER_01]: It had so much texture.
- 1:03:46[SPEAKER_01]: You could feel the vibrancy of culture and of heat and all that kind of stuff
- 1:03:53[SPEAKER_01]: And then there was just stuff I was just like huh when spoilers when we find out that he didn't survive right and it's just on a newspaper thing yeah what ride you cut that part out exactly and then the whole thing with the hairy leg You know later I learned what that was about which is that
- 1:04:10[SPEAKER_01]: it was at a joking reference to refer to crimes that had been committed by police officers that we're never going to be proved that those were police officers who committed those crimes.
- 1:04:22[SPEAKER_01]: So there was this whole mythology of very leg.
- 1:04:25[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:04:25[SPEAKER_00]: So they couldn't report about it openly.
- 1:04:28[SPEAKER_00]: No, I mean, they could have, I mean, certainly came around.
- 1:04:32[SPEAKER_01]: Could have popped in and said something.
- 1:04:34[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's the, yeah, that's the part I needed the second screen, but I just, it's not even a second screen explanation.
- 1:04:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's a, it's so you were born outside Brazil.
- 1:04:43[SPEAKER_00]: Let me tell you this thing.
- 1:04:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but I mean, I like the Harry leg was probably my high point, just I like, you know, using that as metaphor, but it did feel out of place with the rest, but okay, I do have to say for the Brazilians out there, I.
- 1:04:59[SPEAKER_00]: Because I felt so bad about not watching this, I mean, I looked up what was it up against to get the nomination and I watched what seemed to be the other two leading contenders.
- 1:05:08[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, okay, we're in the work.
- 1:05:10[SPEAKER_00]: When it's called blue trail in the other is called Manus.
- 1:05:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I've seen Manus, one of the executive producers is Sean Penn, so if you wanted... No, interesting.
- 1:05:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I, the writing for both of those for me, just blue the secret agent out of the water.
- 1:05:26[SPEAKER_00]: And to that means I like both of those films a lot better.
- 1:05:30[SPEAKER_00]: So blue trails like kind of this sort of surreal soft sci-fi thing set in a future where people over the age of actually the age goes down I think to like 75 or something get sent to the colonies and this this woman is just she doesn't want to do that she wants to go like do her bucket list.
- 1:05:52[SPEAKER_00]: And so it's a sort of surreal odyssey through the Amazon.
- 1:05:56[SPEAKER_00]: And Manus also takes place along the Amazon.
- 1:05:58[SPEAKER_00]: That's a much darker one about sexual abuse of young girls.
- 1:06:04[SPEAKER_00]: But both of them, I thought, were just brilliant, good films.
- 1:06:08[SPEAKER_00]: both very indie though, whereas a secret agent had quite high production values and neither of them featured Ragnar Mora.
- 1:06:16[SPEAKER_00]: So as much as I like the other two films better, I have to wonder if it would have done as well in nominations just because I feel like Ragnar Mora was a real driving force behind the secret agent.
- 1:06:26[SPEAKER_01]: Interesting.
- 1:06:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's a movie star, right?
- 1:06:28[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, that makes sense.
- 1:06:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:06:31[SPEAKER_01]: Cool.
- 1:06:31[SPEAKER_01]: What was your number nine?
- 1:06:33[SPEAKER_01]: F1.
- 1:06:34[SPEAKER_01]: Me too.
- 1:06:35[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 1:06:36[SPEAKER_01]: Where are we?
- 1:06:37[SPEAKER_01]: I, and I also don't think that this, if I had watched enough other films that might have also gotten displaced, I thought, from a technical filmmaking standpoint, the editing the sound, all of that was great.
- 1:06:49[SPEAKER_01]: My wife and I went and saw it in the theater, or my in-laws were like, oh, that would be a fun movie for you guys to go, go see it in theater, like, okay, go.
- 1:06:57[SPEAKER_01]: So we enjoyed it and I still, I think it's 20 minutes too long.
- 1:07:02[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of lag in the middle that if it had been a tighter edit and just a very simple heroes journey kind of, you know, he, you know, gets the girl and wins the race that it kept it simple like that.
- 1:07:14[SPEAKER_01]: I think it would have been a more enjoyable film, but I appreciate what they put into it, and it was a fun movie, and it just doesn't, it's just not Oscar quality for me.
- 1:07:29[SPEAKER_01]: I guess in a way.
- 1:07:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I kind of, I predicted that it was going to get the best picture nomination, just because of the wide supports in the technical categories.
- 1:07:39[SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:40[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, technically it was very good and it deserved those technical nominations.
- 1:07:46[SPEAKER_00]: Great cast, no shade to the cast.
- 1:07:49[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 1:07:50[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody did their jobs in general.
- 1:07:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:07:52[SPEAKER_00]: It was just the most formulaic.
- 1:07:54[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, not to quasi-phone.
- 1:07:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:07:58[SPEAKER_00]: It was a very formulaic screenplay.
- 1:08:00[SPEAKER_00]: And that for me was just made it like, okay.
- 1:08:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:08:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's just like, okay.
- 1:08:06[SPEAKER_01]: This is a summer blockbuster, you know, it's fun, it's room room.
- 1:08:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:08:11[SPEAKER_00]: But for what it's worth, I liked it a lot better than Top Gun Maverick, which is from the same director.
- 1:08:16[SPEAKER_00]: So.
- 1:08:17[SPEAKER_01]: Agreed.
- 1:08:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think this is a better movie in a lot of ways.
- 1:08:20[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I might have to do with me also just liking Brad Pitt and Damsan Idris better than Tom Cruise and Glen Powell.
- 1:08:30[SPEAKER_01]: Brad Pitt really is sort of the Robert Redford of yes generation so.
- 1:08:35[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 1:08:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's fun to watch him age and take on different roles and take on different character types.
- 1:08:41[SPEAKER_01]: So oh and then we're getting that once upon a time in Hollywood spin off.
- 1:08:46[SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
- 1:08:47[SPEAKER_01]: Let's, let's, let's not go down that segue.
- 1:08:49[SPEAKER_01]: Moving on.
- 1:08:50[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:08:50[SPEAKER_00]: What's your number eight?
- 1:08:52[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, train dreams.
- 1:08:53[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:08:54[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:08:55[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't work on me.
- 1:08:57[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:08:58[SPEAKER_01]: I liked it.
- 1:08:59[SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was beautiful.
- 1:09:01[SPEAKER_01]: And it was a movie that was trying to be so full and in its effort to apply itself to this moving storyline, it just didn't something was missing in the sauce for me.
- 1:09:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, beautiful soundscape, beautiful cinematography.
- 1:09:21[SPEAKER_01]: Interesting story.
- 1:09:23[SPEAKER_01]: I'm originally from the Pacific Northwest, so it's interesting to understand that aspect of it.
- 1:09:30[SPEAKER_01]: As a parent, this was a tough year for best picture norms because we got a lot of parent games, secret agent, even, you know, train dreams, a lot of dead kids here.
- 1:09:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:09:45[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a lot to appreciate.
- 1:09:47[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, I just kind of was like, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm
- 1:10:11[SPEAKER_01]: And why, you know, like it should be, it should be very hard in their rankings and yet it's not so.
- 1:10:17[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:10:19[SPEAKER_00]: Um, my, yeah, I've trained dreams for me slightly higher, so I'll talk about it in a moment.
- 1:10:23[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but my number eight was one battle after another.
- 1:10:26[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow.
- 1:10:29[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I mean, I think I've already said a lot about this, but in general, like the summary is I would probably like this movie a lot better if people stopped trying to tell me it had something important to say.
- 1:10:43[SPEAKER_00]: Because even Paul Thomas Anderson doesn't pretend it as anything important to me, it reminds me more of Civil War.
- 1:10:51[SPEAKER_00]: which it was blatantly, you know, like in the marketing, this is an apolitical war movie, which I don't like that aspect of it, but there were things about civil war I did like.
- 1:11:02[SPEAKER_00]: And one battle after another, there were aspects of it I did like, but...
- 1:11:06[SPEAKER_00]: just the way people are like, this is the movie we need for the moment, that's me the wrong way.
- 1:11:10[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, see the screenplay and directing episode where Catherine and I did do a full spoiler chat about those films, which included one battle because of course it's almost ever category.
- 1:11:26[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, we talked a bit more about that.
- 1:11:29[SPEAKER_00]: And she actually, it struck her as a conservative
- 1:11:36[SPEAKER_00]: progressive politics.
- 1:11:38[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, so I just, yeah, it just didn't work on me.
- 1:11:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of my least favorite Paul Thomas Anderson movies.
- 1:11:45[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I can see that.
- 1:11:47[SPEAKER_01]: And it did not rank as high.
- 1:11:51[SPEAKER_01]: as I thought it would like when I walked out of the theater and I was like holy smokes and then on retrospect and thinking about the other films in the quality of filmmaking and stuff.
- 1:12:03[SPEAKER_01]: It is definitely not as high on on.
- 1:12:06[SPEAKER_00]: As you initially expect it.
- 1:12:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:09[SPEAKER_00]: So.
- 1:12:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because you were at first, you were like, well, something's got to compete with this.
- 1:12:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I guess there are multiple films that I think are better films that are qualitatively better films and are have more
- 1:12:27[SPEAKER_01]: say coherent story, but there's some comical elements to one battle after another, obviously Sean Penn's character.
- 1:12:35[SPEAKER_01]: And Tiana Taylor, you know, did a great job, but then the sort of, oh, like how do we manage for her character and her characters arc?
- 1:12:45[SPEAKER_01]: And just sort of the ludicrousness of it with the Christmas adventurers club and that kind of stuff and I, you know, and I get to set you.
- 1:12:54[SPEAKER_01]: So he's mixed in a whole bunch of stuff, right?
- 1:12:57[SPEAKER_01]: There's an absurdist quality to the film.
- 1:13:00[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that absurdist, like he oversees in it with absurdity and that sort of ruins the taste of the movie a little bit.
- 1:13:08[SPEAKER_01]: over season.
- 1:13:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's over season.
- 1:13:10[SPEAKER_00]: It would be over season.
- 1:13:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:13:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:13:12[SPEAKER_00]: I found it a bit too meandering, but there were there were set pieces that I really enjoyed there.
- 1:13:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like the the whole beneath the adult horror thing and the chase at the end is we keep bringing up.
- 1:13:24[SPEAKER_00]: I do just think it works better when it's positioned as a father-daughter movie than as any other revolutionary.
- 1:13:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:13:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:13:33[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 1:13:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I think I was taken to walking out of it and thinking about when you have param, when you have literal military being, you know, uh, uh, seconded into law enforcement operations.
- 1:13:50[SPEAKER_01]: and what that does to our sense of justice and creating a civil society that is civil and has redress and that tempers the incredible powers of the state and we definitely saw in our country the blatant violation of those things over the these last few months,
- 1:14:17[SPEAKER_01]: And so it really struck a chord for me in regards to the reality of some of what people have been experiencing in our culture, so that really hit me and so I appreciate it for that.
- 1:14:35[SPEAKER_01]: But also I think that is also a timed and circumstantial thing as well.
- 1:14:38[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know how well this movie is going to a question, how well this movie is going to age relative to Paul Thomas Anderson's other movies, and I am not a devotee, I think I'm five for nine of his movies.
- 1:14:51[SPEAKER_01]: So I've got a good sampling, but I don't have a full picture.
- 1:14:54[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah.
- 1:14:57[SPEAKER_00]: In my brain canon, this Oscar is for Phantom Thread.
- 1:15:01[SPEAKER_00]: That's okay.
- 1:15:03[SPEAKER_01]: There enough.
- 1:15:04[SPEAKER_01]: That was a good movie.
- 1:15:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:15:06[SPEAKER_01]: That was a really good movie.
- 1:15:07[SPEAKER_00]: um okay so train dreams was your number eight what is your number seven uh secret agent okay yeah i really enjoyed it uh my wife and i had a good time watching it and again i thought it was visually sumptuous and i really like Wagner more so okay um yeah from for me this from here on up all of the films are rated at least four stars out of five so i quite like all of these
- 1:15:31[SPEAKER_00]: You're right.
- 1:15:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's tough, right?
- 1:15:33[SPEAKER_01]: As they say on top chef, you're getting sent home for cooking really good food.
- 1:15:37[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:15:37[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:15:38[SPEAKER_00]: But I ended up, and you know, I really changed my mind a lot about the films in the middle, but for this, for the purposes of this exercise, I ended up putting train dreams at number seven.
- 1:15:49[SPEAKER_00]: And it just basically came down to like it's a gobsmackingly gorgeous and I walked away the end of it with the feeling like that was a really special film.
- 1:15:59[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, but it was just kind of relentlessly downerish a lot of the time.
- 1:16:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:16:08[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 1:16:08[SPEAKER_00]: The thing about it is it's built on the back of all these conversations and so some of the conversations worked for me and some of them didn't but then I would like completely disconnect from the film when a conversation wasn't working for me and those conversations could last.
- 1:16:24[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, it was for me, it was a bit hit or miss, but I overall walked away with a very strong opinion of it.
- 1:16:32[SPEAKER_00]: Though I do have to say, I think that the, I know a lot of people want to Joel at Jotin to get the acting nomination, but I, I feel like the side characters, like William H. Maycey kept stealing the show.
- 1:16:42[SPEAKER_01]: right and it was hard when he was there because it's well, you made macy you're like hey, what's going on with William age, crazy.
- 1:16:50[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, yeah, if it was like at the end, it was like can he at least keep his daughter or and I know it's based on a book, but like or at least get together with Carrie Condon like let the man have some things exactly exactly.
- 1:17:03[SPEAKER_00]: all of his friends are dead like the dogs are gone.
- 1:17:06[SPEAKER_00]: What happens to the dogs?
- 1:17:07[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know but they're not there anymore.
- 1:17:09[SPEAKER_01]: Man, there's a little piece for sure.
- 1:17:12[SPEAKER_00]: So what was your number six?
- 1:17:13[SPEAKER_01]: My number six is Marty Supreme.
- 1:17:15[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 1:17:17[SPEAKER_01]: Again, a wife and I watched it.
- 1:17:20[SPEAKER_01]: Had a really good time.
- 1:17:22[SPEAKER_01]: It
- 1:17:27[SPEAKER_01]: uh... it made sense it was coherent that's why secret agent is at seven and not six is because from us from uh... from my point of vantage point of understanding the story i can understand marty supreme
- 1:17:42[SPEAKER_01]: and enjoy it more than I could with secret agent, with secret agent, there was just some cultural history that's embedded in it that I just didn't have awareness of.
- 1:17:50[SPEAKER_01]: So I couldn't appreciate how those things were playing into the film.
- 1:17:55[SPEAKER_01]: Marty's a pretty straightforward and well-tolled.
- 1:18:00[SPEAKER_01]: I thought what's his name to me did a good job.
- 1:18:07[SPEAKER_01]: He was intense, his intensity was intense.
- 1:18:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he really sold it.
- 1:18:14[SPEAKER_01]: And yet, where's the nuance in the performance?
- 1:18:17[SPEAKER_01]: Where is showing me more of what he got, what he has?
- 1:18:22[SPEAKER_01]: He just set a level for the Marty Supreme character and he kept his foot on the gas of that.
- 1:18:29[SPEAKER_01]: And it was loud and it was brash.
- 1:18:30[SPEAKER_01]: It was hyper energetic and it was driven.
- 1:18:33[SPEAKER_01]: And there was no nuance or depth to it, even at the end.
- 1:18:40[SPEAKER_01]: whatever, you're a dick this whole movie and now you're gonna like, you know, take up your fatherly responsibilities, like, okay, after all the damage you run.
- 1:18:49[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, that's a character.
- 1:18:51[SPEAKER_01]: The performance analysis, it was fine.
- 1:18:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know, he did a good job, but we enjoyed it because it had that, that, what's the other side of the movie, um, uncut gems, right, which was like, you know, it's not a movie that I'm going to go back to and watch, uh, I mean, what's her wild, but man, you really felt that you got so with that movie.
- 1:19:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Marty Supreme kept Ronald Braunstein, the editor of Uncut Jams.
- 1:19:15[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like that's the secret sauce, yeah.
- 1:19:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I have a much more positive view.
- 1:19:22[SPEAKER_00]: Like I, that's it's rated higher for me.
- 1:19:24[SPEAKER_00]: And I have a more positive view of timiltays performance.
- 1:19:29[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:19:30[SPEAKER_00]: So Bobo, okay.
- 1:19:31[SPEAKER_00]: We'll get to that.
- 1:19:31[SPEAKER_00]: My number six was Frankenstein.
- 1:19:33[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, this is one that moved around a lot on my list.
- 1:19:38[SPEAKER_00]: as I was saying to Katherine in the writing episode, I almost feel like I'm too close to it to like, judge it, evaluate it fairly.
- 1:19:45[SPEAKER_00]: And now here, I have a lot of voices in my year where just a lot of people feel the way you do.
- 1:19:51[SPEAKER_00]: It seems to be a divisive one.
- 1:19:53[SPEAKER_00]: And I think,
- 1:19:55[SPEAKER_00]: For me, my deep dive into Mary Shelley and the book, which is based on everything really helped me appreciate it more because a lot of things that people don't like about it, but that's from the book.
- 1:20:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a lot of philosophy talk, that is the book.
- 1:20:15[SPEAKER_00]: But it is also at the same time.
- 1:20:17[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, I realized, watching it, I wanted a certain adaptation from it.
- 1:20:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, well, this isn't Alicia's adaptation.
- 1:20:24[SPEAKER_00]: This is Gearmittal Tour's adaptation.
- 1:20:26[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:20:26[SPEAKER_00]: So watch out one day, my adaptation, working title, Justine's Justice, a character who is cut from this version, will be the center of my story.
- 1:20:38[SPEAKER_01]: They're enough.
- 1:20:39[SPEAKER_01]: It's interesting that, yeah, a lot of people.
- 1:20:41[SPEAKER_01]: I was surprised that it won so much, but a lot of people But would you think it won the production design awards?
- 1:20:48[SPEAKER_00]: What did you think of the production design costumes and makeup and hair?
- 1:20:52[SPEAKER_00]: Because the makeup and hair was obviously for the creature design
- 1:20:55[SPEAKER_01]: Right, I thought Begonia had a better, some of that.
- 1:20:59[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if it was nominated, but I was like, not going to, yeah, and I didn't see ugly step sister.
- 1:21:05[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know if you wanted that I should have won, I think.
- 1:21:08[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:21:08[SPEAKER_00]: It was when visitors are being to me.
- 1:21:11[SPEAKER_01]: He just filled over for me the, the, the moody lighting was over stylized and I, I just, I like Gothic, yeah, films.
- 1:21:20[SPEAKER_01]: But it didn't feel Gothic to me.
- 1:21:21[SPEAKER_01]: It felt moody lighting.
- 1:21:23[SPEAKER_01]: And again, you know, this is not a film that that didn't work on me, and so when it's getting so much attention and love, I was like, I can't.
- 1:21:33[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know why, but it's that's the way it is.
- 1:21:37[SPEAKER_00]: I going into this, I had the feeling you wouldn't like that one.
- 1:21:41[SPEAKER_01]: That's not fair enough, all right, you beg me.
- 1:21:43[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't think it was going to be your cup of tea, yeah.
- 1:21:46[SPEAKER_00]: Got it.
- 1:21:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's fair.
- 1:21:47[SPEAKER_00]: A Vosho number five.
- 1:21:50[SPEAKER_01]: My number five is one battle after another.
- 1:21:53[SPEAKER_01]: And I think I've kind of said my piece about that.
- 1:21:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's, I just don't know how well it's going to age.
- 1:22:00[SPEAKER_01]: And I haven't done a second watch.
- 1:22:03[SPEAKER_01]: I've done half of a second watch.
- 1:22:05[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, and I picked up some details.
- 1:22:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, OK, well, that's interesting.
- 1:22:09[SPEAKER_01]: And it's big.
- 1:22:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's loud.
- 1:22:11[SPEAKER_01]: It moves.
- 1:22:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's got some great set pieces.
- 1:22:15[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, what is it doing for us for a movie standpoint?
- 1:22:20[SPEAKER_01]: you know, I think it's about a five for me in terms of social commentary, family story, visually amazing, right, using vista vision, the car chasing stuff.
- 1:22:32[SPEAKER_01]: But that's, is that gimmicky or is that tell us something about the movie?
- 1:22:36[SPEAKER_01]: Is that visual storytelling?
- 1:22:38[SPEAKER_01]: Or is that just like, hey, we got the school camera, let's do some fun stuff with it.
- 1:22:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I'm surprised that I put it down because I, you know, I threw everything up on the on the dry erase board and I was sort of listing things out and again I just really sat in what did I enjoy and there are other ways that I enjoyed way more.
- 1:22:57[SPEAKER_01]: than this on retrospect.
- 1:23:00[SPEAKER_01]: I was more blown away by this than I enjoyed this if that makes sense.
- 1:23:04[SPEAKER_00]: No, that's fair.
- 1:23:05[SPEAKER_00]: And that's how I feel about my number five.
- 1:23:08[SPEAKER_00]: And again, we're in the top half of the list now.
- 1:23:11[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, let's write.
- 1:23:12[SPEAKER_01]: Fine gradations.
- 1:23:13[SPEAKER_00]: All these five movies I find to be masterpieces in their own ways, but my number five is sentimental value, which because at the end of the day, I think I appreciate it more than I personally love it.
- 1:23:27[SPEAKER_00]: But it's really, it's just a hell of a film, and I couldn't justify ranking it any lower.
- 1:23:33[SPEAKER_00]: I'll say for me, the real standout in that movie continues to be Inia, it's Dr. Lilia's who played Nora, the quieter sister.
- 1:23:43[SPEAKER_01]: She was awesome.
- 1:23:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she her performance was profound and I was really sad that she didn't I mean she got nominated Okay fine.
- 1:23:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean yeah, she was not as much in the conversation as the rest of other than L fanning was not in the conversation with all L fannings like really me.
- 1:24:00[SPEAKER_00]: I got an nomination.
- 1:24:01[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks.
- 1:24:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was like no, you shouldn't have gotten nominated for that.
- 1:24:05[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, only because I mean, I think she did a great job, but it's not even my favorite performance of her of the year, but there's no way they were going to nominate her for predator battlands, but I think, yeah, that's she there she played twins and did a really awesome job.
- 1:24:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was more acting, you know, other than just playing a version of herself, right?
- 1:24:27[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:24:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:24:29[SPEAKER_00]: So, but yeah, sentimental value, though, I think it is, as you said, cinema.
- 1:24:34[SPEAKER_00]: So that's why it's, it's in the top half of my list.
- 1:24:38[SPEAKER_00]: with you number four.
- 1:24:39[SPEAKER_01]: So this is again, you know, to preference conflicted feelings about where to rank things and I have been on record as saying sinners didn't work for me.
- 1:24:51[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:24:53[SPEAKER_00]: Do you haven't said it?
- 1:24:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:24:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:24:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:24:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's number four.
- 1:24:56[SPEAKER_01]: And it's kind of like I kind of like how do I really struggled with where do I put it on my list?
- 1:25:03[SPEAKER_01]: Because I cannot ignore the historic, the history of the films, the most nominated films, black performers, giving telling stories of history and culture and music using horror to
- 1:25:20[SPEAKER_01]: you know illuminate issues of racism and philosophy and religion like there's all this stuff in there that really should I remember Anthony from properly Howard one of our affiliates you know it was like hey you know what's going on with sinners or whatever and I was like
- 1:25:37[SPEAKER_01]: Not me, you know, like I don't know why you didn't work on me.
- 1:25:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel awkward about that.
- 1:25:47[SPEAKER_01]: I don't feel bad about it because I can't make myself like a movie that I don't like.
- 1:25:50[SPEAKER_01]: But I also don't want to like ignore its history.
- 1:25:54[SPEAKER_01]: So I have an alternate position for this from an enjoyment factor film.
- 1:26:00[SPEAKER_01]: But I feel like I have to recognize sinners for...
- 1:26:03[SPEAKER_01]: Wait, wait.
- 1:26:04[SPEAKER_01]: The cultural context of the movie.
- 1:26:06[SPEAKER_00]: would be your true ranking from an enjoyment perspective.
- 1:26:09[SPEAKER_01]: No other choice.
- 1:26:11[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, I mean, oh, so you would take it off the list altogether, you mean?
- 1:26:15[SPEAKER_00]: Sinners.
- 1:26:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, where would you go?
- 1:26:16[SPEAKER_01]: I would put, yeah, if I were to set sinners aside.
- 1:26:20[SPEAKER_00]: I'd put no other choice in this but you would take it off the list before F1.
- 1:26:26[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, I probably would push off Frankenstein I guess yeah, I don't know like I said it's like I'm in this weird position because I I respect it But I don't I didn't enjoy it so I don't know how to I don't know how to all right
- 1:26:40[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how to where to put it.
- 1:26:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:26:42[SPEAKER_00]: OK. Yeah.
- 1:26:43[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'm going to hold the audience in suspense.
- 1:26:47[SPEAKER_00]: I can't turn nobody.
- 1:26:48[SPEAKER_00]: OK.
- 1:26:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's no right.
- 1:26:50[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Jason.
- 1:26:52[SPEAKER_00]: Please.
- 1:26:52[SPEAKER_00]: But my number four is Hamlet.
- 1:26:55[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, okay.
- 1:26:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's just I I love the beginning and the end a lot more than most of the middle Right, but it's ranked so high because the ending has stuck with me more than almost any other So I'm yeah, I think I'm gonna ask you at the end of this which your favorite ending is out of all Oh, I don't know boy.
- 1:27:18[SPEAKER_01]: That's a tough one one no, I don't know
- 1:27:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's over.
- 1:27:23[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 1:27:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:27:24[SPEAKER_01]: I checked.
- 1:27:25[SPEAKER_01]: Marty's a bream?
- 1:27:26[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 1:27:26[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 1:27:29[SPEAKER_01]: Cool.
- 1:27:29[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so.
- 1:27:31[SPEAKER_00]: So what's your number three then?
- 1:27:32[SPEAKER_01]: My number three.
- 1:27:33[SPEAKER_01]: And shout out for subscribers.
- 1:27:35[SPEAKER_01]: You and I have a minute for a bunch on which you watch episode.
- 1:27:40[SPEAKER_00]: We have a dedicated episode, yeah.
- 1:27:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:27:43[SPEAKER_01]: I know where three is Bagoña.
- 1:27:44[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:27:45[SPEAKER_01]: I I enjoyed the shit out of that movie.
- 1:27:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was really fun.
- 1:27:48[SPEAKER_01]: I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
- 1:27:50[SPEAKER_01]: Jesse Plyman's was just a freak Show amazing I even wanted him nominated.
- 1:27:57[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, he really should have been nominated.
- 1:27:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's rough and what's her name?
- 1:28:03[SPEAKER_01]: Emma Stone was just in question
- 1:28:05[SPEAKER_01]: incredible she just really leaned into it and I was kind of live posting in the discord when I was watching it and I was like oh man oh man I really hoped that we get a like scene of the spaceship at the end or something and then boom where there it is there we are yeah she didn't know if you knew that when it's coming or something and I had no clue and I was like yes this is awesome and it was just weird and goofy and
- 1:28:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I said to you that I knew there are things about it that you would love and there were things I questioned of how you would react to the things I thought that you would love was the vista vision, the whole cinematography of it.
- 1:28:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it changes some things, but I think the biggest pro that this has versus that one is that it is more of a character study.
- 1:28:59[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought that you would be interested in that part.
- 1:29:02[SPEAKER_00]: But I didn't know how you were going to react to the ending.
- 1:29:04[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm glad to hear it delighted to hear it.
- 1:29:07[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, yay.
- 1:29:09[SPEAKER_01]: You know, because I kept wanting them to really, like, I wanted, that's what I wanted for the film was to blow my expectations by actually making it that, yeah, these, you know, she's an alien.
- 1:29:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because they were just playing it straight all the way up until the very end.
- 1:29:23[SPEAKER_01]: And you're just thinking, wow.
- 1:29:25[SPEAKER_01]: In this closet hiding.
- 1:29:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:29:29[SPEAKER_01]: And you're just thinking, oh, Jesse Plymins, he's just, you know, Yeah, I can see how this like, you know,
- 1:29:35[SPEAKER_01]: The way he grew up, where he grew up, his socioeconomic situation, all of these things like you can see the reality of all of this and the corporate greed and the poisoning and all of these same with his mother.
- 1:29:49[SPEAKER_01]: So it's very real until it's not and then I was delighted.
- 1:29:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:29:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 1:29:58[SPEAKER_00]: Um, my number three was Marty Supreme.
- 1:30:01[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I just, I just thought you would put it.
- 1:30:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I just found it entertaining and engrossing throughout just like every scene.
- 1:30:08[SPEAKER_00]: And it's interesting when I look back, um, like sometimes people are referencing some scenes from some of these movies.
- 1:30:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, oh, I only watched it a few months ago, but I already am forgetting details from Marty Supreme.
- 1:30:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think I could probably like reconstruct the entire timeline of the movie.
- 1:30:25[SPEAKER_00]: it was just so memorable to me after watching.
- 1:30:27[SPEAKER_00]: I've only seen it once so far, but I would definitely watch it again.
- 1:30:30[SPEAKER_00]: And versus, I don't like uncut gems.
- 1:30:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I think the difference here is that I feel like this character, he's obnoxious, he's unbelievable.
- 1:30:43[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to punch him in the face regularly, but he does, I was also rooting for him, and he does have a real arc.
- 1:30:50[SPEAKER_00]: like the movie goes somewhere.
- 1:30:52[SPEAKER_00]: It lands somewhere at the end and it's you know you have that big success moment that's not you know it's not like he suddenly gets into the world championship and wins them.
- 1:31:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's like no he's blocked from that.
- 1:31:05[SPEAKER_00]: Of course it is based on a true story and I understand maybe somewhat loosely.
- 1:31:11[SPEAKER_00]: But he has that moment, you know, where it's at least it's it was just enough to feel like he could say, okay, I did the thing and then he goes home and he's like, actually maybe
- 1:31:26[SPEAKER_00]: the this woman who's been through me, like Adessa Azayan also would have been very deserving of a better supporting actress and nomination.
- 1:31:37[SPEAKER_00]: She really stole the show for me a lot of the time.
- 1:31:39[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, I was I was satisfied with that that ending where he sees his son and realizes what matters.
- 1:31:46[SPEAKER_01]: What's important.
- 1:31:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:31:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:31:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:31:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think there are some great supporting characters in there that didn't get domination either.
- 1:31:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:31:56[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was it.
- 1:31:59[SPEAKER_01]: Who's the taxicab driver?
- 1:32:02[SPEAKER_01]: Was that Tyler the creator?
- 1:32:04[SPEAKER_01]: Is that who plays Willie?
- 1:32:05[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, his, you know, his, his buddy that he goes, right, right, right, right, yeah, he was a, that was a great character.
- 1:32:11[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I don't think Kevin O'Leary deserves any kind of Oscar whatsoever, but he played a really good bad rich guy, you know, like, so he did his job really well.
- 1:32:21[SPEAKER_00]: There's a funny meme from the red carpet where Kevin O'Leary is like showing off some ridiculous bling necklace or whatever that he has.
- 1:32:30[SPEAKER_00]: And the camera pans to japharp, not he, the
- 1:32:34[SPEAKER_00]: Um, who's just, I mean, he's kind of, of a serious man.
- 1:32:39[SPEAKER_00]: He's, he's, um, he's someone who is now going back to Iran to serve his sentence for having created this movie that he was not going to work.
- 1:32:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:32:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:32:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:32:50[SPEAKER_00]: He's getting arrested for, he's, it's illegal for him to make films in Iran and he keeps doing it in secret, anyway, in releasing them in Europe.
- 1:32:58[SPEAKER_00]: Um, not a really good, not a good time to, uh,
- 1:33:01[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, but he made this pledge.
- 1:33:05[SPEAKER_00]: She said, you know, he left.
- 1:33:06[SPEAKER_00]: He got the rest warrant was when he left for Khan to premiere the film.
- 1:33:11[SPEAKER_00]: After it's premiere, that's when the new arrest warrant was put out.
- 1:33:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's for a year and then he's not allowed to work for two years.
- 1:33:18[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and he's like, okay, I'm going to stay in Europe in the US and stuff promoting the film and then after the Oscars I'll go back and serve my sentence because he doesn't he says Iran is his home and he's not going to run away from it.
- 1:33:32[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 1:33:32[SPEAKER_01]: That's good.
- 1:33:34[SPEAKER_01]: So incredible.
- 1:33:35[SPEAKER_00]: So you have Kevin O'Leary showing the bling on the carpet and the camera pants to Jafar Pinau, he just giving him this shadiest look ever.
- 1:33:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like who is this buffoon?
- 1:33:47[SPEAKER_01]: Oh man, that's painful.
- 1:33:48[SPEAKER_00]: That's painful.
- 1:33:50[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, but anyway.
- 1:33:53[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, so oh, and Justice, just for Marty Supreme, Justice for Moses, the dog, also.
- 1:33:59[SPEAKER_00]: I was so worried about that dog.
- 1:34:01[SPEAKER_00]: The entire freaking movie.
- 1:34:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:34:06[SPEAKER_01]: Um, okay, so what is your number two then so one and two or tough right yeah real tight real close and I'm like, uh, maybe it's maybe it's Regency bias because of and, um, and the flashiness of it, but sentimental value.
- 1:34:24[SPEAKER_01]: is my number two, which puts Hamlet into number one, sentimental value was, what did I send you, I think you have a message like after I said it.
- 1:34:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's cinema, yeah.
- 1:34:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's cinema, right?
- 1:34:36[SPEAKER_01]: This is a movie, and it's a movie about a movie, and you know, like, wow, is really, really, really, really, yeah.
- 1:34:43[SPEAKER_01]: Well, yeah, it's about a lot of, a fatherhood and being a parent and a child and a house, it's about that story of a house,
- 1:34:53[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I really enjoyed it.
- 1:34:56[SPEAKER_01]: Scar's guards performance, you know, chefs kiss and so should I should I talk about Hamnid a little bit too?
- 1:35:04[SPEAKER_01]: Because they're kind of trying together.
- 1:35:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:35:09[SPEAKER_01]: The performance and the story were just so deep and emotional in Hamnid.
- 1:35:17[SPEAKER_01]: And again, yeah, I could be accused of Regency bias because of the end because I had tears streaming down my face at the end of that.
- 1:35:26[SPEAKER_01]: Not, I knew something was coming the whole time.
- 1:35:28[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like waiting for it and then, you know, wow.
- 1:35:31[SPEAKER_00]: There it is.
- 1:35:32[SPEAKER_01]: There it is.
- 1:35:32[SPEAKER_01]: And then I'm like, oh, I was not expecting this.
- 1:35:34[SPEAKER_01]: And here, here's a whole bunch of an examined grief of unloading itself, you know, out of my body.
- 1:35:40[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so let that flow.
- 1:35:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I just thought her performance, I thought on you know, is an interesting character and this just perspective was so great and yet sentimental value is just so well acted and we had depth of character across multiple characters in this family known as family dynamic.
- 1:36:03[SPEAKER_01]: and the story of the house so yeah these two movies are hard for me to separate they're both about families and in a way and and and parenthood so they both really kind of spoke to me on on those levels and both expertly shot and produced and all of that stuff so yeah it was kind of I knew that they were always going to be up in my top
- 1:36:26[SPEAKER_01]: and just like deciding, oh, I know it is going to say too.
- 1:36:30[SPEAKER_01]: Last year, you know, I was, I forget what was my number one film, but I put Con clay of it like number two.
- 1:36:36[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:36:36[SPEAKER_00]: And you, you were good.
- 1:36:38[SPEAKER_00]: I read a number one, but yeah.
- 1:36:40[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:36:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:36:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, oh, no, but Con clay, like this, I think it will be.
- 1:36:46[SPEAKER_01]: So sometimes it's going to be like that, right?
- 1:36:47[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes you know, you, you, you, these, this is an artificial ranking.
- 1:36:51[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, you go with it and, yeah, so, so hand it and send them in a value.
- 1:36:59[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, yeah, so it might my top two have been pretty rock solid and predictable, I mean, yeah, I famously have a soft spot for your to go slant the most films and even though I like the Save the green planet the film bagonious based on even better and even though there are other lathe most films I like even better than this one
- 1:37:25[SPEAKER_00]: I did really enjoy the go and yeah, and I think, yeah, I think it's a really great film.
- 1:37:29[SPEAKER_00]: I look forward to rewatching it.
- 1:37:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so glad he made it.
- 1:37:32[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so glad that it connected with so many people.
- 1:37:35[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the people were getting into his, you know, he's famously, like the most famous director of the Greek weird wave, but this felt like a very American film.
- 1:37:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it was a very not only set, but like had a lot of themes and elements that were very American for sure.
- 1:37:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was funny to see it turn up at the European film awards.
- 1:37:57[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, really?
- 1:37:58[SPEAKER_00]: Well, yeah, I mean, I guess technically.
- 1:38:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but of course yeah my number one is sinners just you know no notes perfect film up there with everything everywhere all at once for me as like all-time great I don't know it's probably gonna be another few years at least until I love another movie again this much Although I do love 28 years later, but that was not nominated not on the list
- 1:38:23[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so, okay, did you have any final spoilery thoughts you wanted to unload about these ten films?
- 1:38:31[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I don't think so.
- 1:38:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think we've covered it all pretty well.
- 1:38:35[SPEAKER_01]: Um, yeah, no, I think I'm, I think I'm good.
- 1:38:38[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:38:39[SPEAKER_00]: Then this is going to be where I timestamp to welcome people back who didn't want those spoilers.
- 1:38:44[SPEAKER_00]: Stick around.
- 1:38:45[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be right back.
- 1:39:01[SPEAKER_00]: And do you want to recap from 10 to 1?
- 1:39:04[SPEAKER_00]: What are your, how did you rank that picture 10?
- 1:39:09[SPEAKER_01]: Number 10 Frankenstein, number 9 F1, number 8 train dreams, number 7 secret agent, number 6 Marty Supreme, number 5, one battle after another, number 4 sinners, number 3 Bogonia,
- 1:39:26[SPEAKER_01]: Number two, sentimental value, and number one, Hamlet.
- 1:39:30[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, I was over the right to swap.
- 1:39:32[SPEAKER_01]: Number one and two later.
- 1:39:34[SPEAKER_00]: Hi.
- 1:39:35[SPEAKER_00]: Is there any time?
- 1:39:35[SPEAKER_00]: Is there you want?
- 1:39:37[SPEAKER_00]: Is there any time?
- 1:39:38[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, my ranking from 10 to one was number 10, the secret agent.
- 1:39:42[SPEAKER_00]: Number nine, F1, number eight, one battle after another, number seven, train dreams, number six, Frankenstein, number five, sentimental value, number four, Hamlet, number three, Marty Supreme, number two, Bogonia, and number one, declaring all the rest by wide margin centers.
- 1:40:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'm surprised at Bogonia was so hot, because I didn't hear you.
- 1:40:05[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have a recollection
- 1:40:12[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, did I talk about it?
- 1:40:15[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't do a special dedicated episode to it because I didn't think the public at that.
- 1:40:19[SPEAKER_00]: Appetite was there for it?
- 1:40:21[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:40:21[SPEAKER_00]: But we do have a dedicated length most chat in that.
- 1:40:24[SPEAKER_01]: Right, which I'm not always in the discord all over the place.
- 1:40:27[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah.
- 1:40:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, yeah, it's not like I said, it's not the length of most film, my most passionate about, but I do soft spot for him.
- 1:40:36[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, in the cast and yeah, in the genre, it does dip into horror bits, no spoilers, but yeah, it's definitely genre.
- 1:40:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, or it's Katherine put it, it's weird.
- 1:40:50[SPEAKER_00]: I like weird.
- 1:40:53[SPEAKER_00]: So you also watched a couple extras that were in the award season mix so my question is where would these rank on your list?
- 1:41:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think you've finished this matching machine now.
- 1:41:05[SPEAKER_01]: I did.
- 1:41:05[SPEAKER_01]: I would not rank it in a best picture listing.
- 1:41:09[SPEAKER_01]: There's a film in there somewhere.
- 1:41:13[SPEAKER_01]: There's a best picture in there somewhere, but it just was kind of too meandering and a little bit lost in it itself.
- 1:41:20[SPEAKER_01]: And then at the end, when I realize that, oh, this is sort of a biopic.
- 1:41:23[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, you know, like really a biopic, not just a fictional, then I was like, oh, okay.
- 1:41:29[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that changes my kind of perspective on it, because all the while I was waiting for other things to happen, I thought I was waiting for trauma to happen.
- 1:41:36[SPEAKER_01]: That said, best supporting actress for, um, for my gal.
- 1:41:41[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully she gets best actress nominee off of the back of the new Steven Spielberg movie this year.
- 1:41:47[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:41:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 1:41:48[SPEAKER_01]: When she speaks and clicky things.
- 1:41:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:41:52[SPEAKER_00]: What is it disclosure day?
- 1:41:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:41:54[SPEAKER_01]: And she's going to be in, uh, Delaware's proud of two.
- 1:41:56[SPEAKER_01]: Which I'm very nervous about.
- 1:41:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:41:59[SPEAKER_00]: knocking on wood.
- 1:42:02[SPEAKER_00]: For me, this smashing machine is not only dead last on this list, but it's of all of the feature films that I've watched this year, which is about to a little over 200.
- 1:42:12[SPEAKER_00]: It is dead last on that list.
- 1:42:14[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 1:42:15[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 1:42:15[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 1:42:15[UNKNOWN]: Wow.
- 1:42:15[SPEAKER_00]: So I just, this is the one, this is the other Saffty movie, you know, the Saffty Brothers broke up.
- 1:42:21[SPEAKER_00]: One took Ronald Bronstein and made Marty Supreme.
- 1:42:26[SPEAKER_00]: The other did not take Ronald Bronstein and made the smashing machine.
- 1:42:29[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:42:31[SPEAKER_00]: I just, yeah, for me was just like, oh, he's yelling, he's fighting, he's, I don't know, it was just going nowhere and spinning your nose.
- 1:42:42[SPEAKER_00]: But Emily Blunt is blameless.
- 1:42:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she's great.
- 1:42:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then at the end when you see him, the real him walking out of the grocery store and all that kind of some of your most is like what is weird and it was all like it just kept like just kept going Just kept going in the middle was just stretched out.
- 1:42:57[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah.
- 1:42:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:42:59[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and what about Jay Kelly that was considered a potential Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:43:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was fine.
- 1:43:08[SPEAKER_00]: I would put it on the list above F1.
- 1:43:11[SPEAKER_00]: So I'll be spoiler alert.
- 1:43:14[SPEAKER_00]: There's two more films we're going to name.
- 1:43:16[SPEAKER_00]: And they would knock F1 and secret agent.
- 1:43:20[SPEAKER_00]: And that's also Jay Kelly off the list.
- 1:43:23[SPEAKER_00]: But I would put it with the 10 there.
- 1:43:26[SPEAKER_00]: I would put it above F1.
- 1:43:28[SPEAKER_00]: Fair enough.
- 1:43:29[SPEAKER_00]: What about weapons?
- 1:43:31[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, I like this a lot more than you.
- 1:43:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it's not that they didn't like it.
- 1:43:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's just, it's not my genre as much.
- 1:43:37[SPEAKER_01]: And we had a whole podcast about it talking about what's the name of the director again of Polygize?
- 1:43:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's a trigger.
- 1:43:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we talked about triggers films, and I enjoyed it, and I don't think I would
- 1:43:55[SPEAKER_00]: um a what this one was considered by many to be very close to getting on here was considered obviously it only got the one nomination for Amy Madigan and one um but a lot of people expected it to show up it was shortlisted for casting for example or could have been a makeup as you mentioned um
- 1:44:13[SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah, so for me, that would be in second place on this list.
- 1:44:19[SPEAKER_00]: So I'd knock everything else down after sinners.
- 1:44:21[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:44:22[SPEAKER_00]: A bit.
- 1:44:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:44:22[SPEAKER_00]: That's one of my top five films of the year, weapons.
- 1:44:26[SPEAKER_01]: Nice.
- 1:44:27[SPEAKER_00]: But the thing is, no other choice would also be number two.
- 1:44:33[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know which one is more number two.
- 1:44:37[SPEAKER_01]: No other choice would have slotted in on number four for me.
- 1:44:41[SPEAKER_01]: In terms of enjoyment, I just enjoyed the hell out of that movie.
- 1:44:44[SPEAKER_01]: I cannot believe that it didn't get nominated for anything at all.
- 1:44:49[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, such an interesting movie and such a fun premise, fun, I don't know.
- 1:44:56[SPEAKER_01]: Weird premise and beautifully shot, well-staged, just an exceptional movie.
- 1:45:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I'll say, I won't say much about weapons.
- 1:45:08[SPEAKER_00]: We do have an entire dedicated episode for that.
- 1:45:11[SPEAKER_00]: Did you'll find linked in the show notes?
- 1:45:13[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, since no other choice, we should do it with you watching about it.
- 1:45:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right.
- 1:45:18[SPEAKER_00]: It is, it is so, it just takes all of the boxes for me.
- 1:45:22[SPEAKER_00]: And welcome to the Park John Woke.
- 1:45:25[SPEAKER_00]: We're mad.
- 1:45:25[SPEAKER_00]: The Oscars ignore him club.
- 1:45:28[SPEAKER_00]: You can be mad with us about the next movie.
- 1:45:31[SPEAKER_00]: because they also, yeah, they've ignored every movie of his so far.
- 1:45:34[SPEAKER_00]: I loved decision to leave.
- 1:45:36[SPEAKER_00]: His last one is like a modern Korean hitchcock, because it's a comedy.
- 1:45:42[SPEAKER_00]: And so this one, it's based on a book.
- 1:45:44[SPEAKER_00]: I have not read the book, but I did watch, there's a French film from...
- 1:45:49[SPEAKER_00]: ten years ago called The Axe, or that's based on the same book.
- 1:45:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I liked that one.
- 1:45:56[SPEAKER_00]: I like that one and gave it four stars.
- 1:45:58[SPEAKER_00]: But this one, you know, like I was saying about Pagonia, that I like the original slightly better in this one.
- 1:46:04[SPEAKER_00]: It's like no, I have no other choice, but to choose no other choice as the better of these two.
- 1:46:09[SPEAKER_00]: It just takes the concept, the story, and elevates it to such a level.
- 1:46:14[SPEAKER_00]: And then you just have Park Chan-Wook is one of the best
- 1:46:19[SPEAKER_00]: directors in terms of directing cinematography that I, you know, it's some of the most, for me, that would be my top choice for cinematography for the year.
- 1:46:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's so inventive.
- 1:46:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it would be probably my top choice for active there because Lee Bionhun, he is
- 1:46:36[SPEAKER_00]: playing, like he has to do everything because he's playing a comedic role that's also hits a lot of dramatic notes.
- 1:46:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 1:46:47[SPEAKER_01]: And he does a lot of internal tension in that character.
- 1:46:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:46:50[SPEAKER_00]: And he communicates it all with all these little micro expressions on his face, just a spectacular performance, I think.
- 1:46:58[SPEAKER_00]: And so socially,
- 1:47:01[SPEAKER_00]: relevant for the moment to like that was depressing watching or maybe the French movies like 20 years old yeah i think that's right and i was like it's so depressing that the this concept is more relevant now than ever being replaced by automation i'd say the French movie and probably the book emphasized more the role that that like boards play in devaluing employees right right
- 1:47:28[SPEAKER_00]: um yeah talk about a movie that has some social commentary built into it that meets the moment I think no other choice does that matter in all the ways so yeah so we all agree it is all agreed everyone if you haven't watched no other choice do that don't watch it go watch it it's a good movie uh it is I mean peculiar rating how would you give it a peculiar rating
- 1:47:49[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I would definitely give it a positive in the whole integer number rating, probably like at three or four.
- 1:47:56[SPEAKER_00]: I was going to say before, I'm just thinking about like a special, the part that especially stands out to me, because he's going around, this was part of the premise.
- 1:48:04[SPEAKER_00]: He's going around murdering people who are his competition.
- 1:48:08[SPEAKER_00]: And I did like that the French film really emphasized like how the corporate overlords are pitting us against each other, but.
- 1:48:15[SPEAKER_00]: This just had a lot more inventive murderers, I'll say, and some of them might be a little difficult to stomach.
- 1:48:26[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, you still had a couple more on your extended list?
- 1:48:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I've got.
- 1:48:30[SPEAKER_01]: If I had legs, it was just an accident in C-Rot on my to watch list.
- 1:48:36[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, all right.
- 1:48:37[SPEAKER_00]: So you'll have to report back at least in a second breakfast or something.
- 1:48:41[SPEAKER_00]: Can you get some answers?
- 1:48:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:48:43[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, if I get so moved by anything, there'll be on a watch you're watching.
- 1:48:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:48:48[SPEAKER_00]: And shout out, since you brought it up and said, we should mention it so that Doug, a very active film-loving member of our discord put together his list of best picture thoughts.
- 1:49:01[SPEAKER_00]: which he didn't rank them like we did, but I read through it and I think he and I don't always see eye to eye, he famously hates everything everywhere all at once, which is just baffling to me.
- 1:49:13[SPEAKER_00]: But I know people feel that way.
- 1:49:15[SPEAKER_00]: There are people who feel that way.
- 1:49:16[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I really liked his thoughts in the film.
- 1:49:19[SPEAKER_00]: So I'll link that in the show notes too.
- 1:49:21[SPEAKER_01]: If anyone wants to give it a
- 1:49:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so yeah, that's our film rankings, then.
- 1:49:32[SPEAKER_01]: And great job on the, the another season.
- 1:49:36[SPEAKER_01]: How many did you total up the total number of minutes of your episodes, your Oscar's episodes?
- 1:49:41[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh, they all went too long this year.
- 1:49:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna really think how I structured them for the next year for sure.
- 1:49:47[SPEAKER_00]: That's good.
- 1:49:49[SPEAKER_01]: You put it in a hell of an effort, I can't see much about the movies.
- 1:49:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it seems I knew and you've brought in a lot of different voices and a lot of different people and I know a lot of people in our community enjoy the work that you do and I'm sure the rest of the other communities appreciated it as well because I think we pick up some different listeners for this because you're connected into the death racers and some other communities.
- 1:50:12[SPEAKER_01]: So
- 1:50:13[SPEAKER_00]: Well, thank you very much.
- 1:50:15[SPEAKER_00]: I appreciate it.
- 1:50:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot of work.
- 1:50:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not going to lie.
- 1:50:18[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a little relieved.
- 1:50:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's done for the year.
- 1:50:20[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm starting on next year.
- 1:50:22[SPEAKER_00]: So if you want to get started on next year's death race.
- 1:50:25[SPEAKER_00]: Project Hail Mary and hoppers or jumpers if you're in the US or if you're in Europe.
- 1:50:32[SPEAKER_00]: They are both in theaters now and I would call them both quite likely nominees because they are, they have all of the secret sauce, you know, made by the right people and all that that they would get attention, but they're also both getting very good reviews.
- 1:50:46[SPEAKER_00]: I've seen them both project Hill Mary.
- 1:50:48[SPEAKER_00]: I am on board with the good reviews.
- 1:50:51[SPEAKER_00]: Hoppers, I'm like, you know, maybe Pixar is no longer just for me, the humor, but.
- 1:50:56[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:50:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:50:57[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone in my theater was dying laughing, not entire movie through Hoppers.
- 1:51:02[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe we need a death watch channel on the on the discord or something.
- 1:51:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I mean, I'll I'll I'll keep sharing tips through the year in the award season channel, which we will shortly after this move back down to seasonal, but I will as things come up because there are like, for example, all of the documentary nominees,
- 1:51:25[SPEAKER_00]: this year, we're at Sundance.
- 1:51:28[SPEAKER_00]: Sundance has already happened.
- 1:51:29[SPEAKER_00]: So we already have a good idea of what the documentary nominees will be.
- 1:51:32[SPEAKER_00]: So I can share things like that as they become available there to watch.
- 1:51:37[SPEAKER_00]: That's good.
- 1:51:38[SPEAKER_01]: And we have to figure out a community place to rank to do because I think folks were using that ESPN list and I think we want to maybe
- 1:51:47[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, do something different next year.
- 1:51:48[SPEAKER_01]: So we got to remember to do that.
- 1:51:50[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:51:50[SPEAKER_00]: Do the Oscar pool thing.
- 1:51:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:51:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:51:52[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of dropped the ball.
- 1:51:53[SPEAKER_00]: And I think maybe it was Doug or someone else would have brought it up.
- 1:51:58[SPEAKER_00]: Like, hey, don't forget about this.
- 1:52:00[SPEAKER_00]: Do the thing.
- 1:52:01[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to for next year.
- 1:52:03[SPEAKER_01]: Don't let us forget.
- 1:52:03[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to for next year.
- 1:52:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:52:05[SPEAKER_00]: And the campaign for rayfines supporting act or nomination for the bone temple starts now.
- 1:52:13[SPEAKER_00]: And speaking of which there will be a bone temple episode coming soon.
- 1:52:18[SPEAKER_00]: What else is going on in the large hounds main feed?
- 1:52:22[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, so I'll just say the bone temple, by the way, it's coming to Netflix apparently.
- 1:52:25[SPEAKER_00]: I just learned March 31st.
- 1:52:26[SPEAKER_00]: So that's exciting.
- 1:52:28[SPEAKER_00]: So I think we'll do the episode to coincide with that.
- 1:52:31[SPEAKER_01]: John and I have got weekly coverage of the pit.
- 1:52:34[SPEAKER_01]: Day is variable on when we can get it together, but we're having a lot of fun.
- 1:52:39[SPEAKER_01]: It's more of a vibe check than a full analysis.
- 1:52:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's hard to do a full analysis of that show.
- 1:52:44[SPEAKER_01]: But we're going to be talking to one of our community members, Sarah, who's actually an emergency department nurse.
- 1:52:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to come on the pod for a little bit of a chat, so that'll be fun.
- 1:52:53[SPEAKER_01]: uh... and i think that's about it right now uh... we're going to we've got some side coverage on uh... paradise going on i mean girls is our eleven z's movies for this month and uh... i know i need to catch up with the in and denay over at the captain's pod because we just they wrapped on uh... starfleet academy which has been a really good season so i want to get there for okay season thought so keep it up for that
- 1:53:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so mean girls that will be for subscribers.
- 1:53:21[SPEAKER_00]: Also for subscribers, you mentioned the ham net what you watch in, but also Lisa and I are going to do a what you watch in a double feature what you watch in for the bride and weathering heights.
- 1:53:31[SPEAKER_00]: Perfect.
- 1:53:32[SPEAKER_00]: That's great.
- 1:53:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:53:33[SPEAKER_00]: The nice trashy costume dramas that we're both into.
- 1:53:37[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, also on the main feed, John and I are going to record this week our first one piece season two episode covering the first three episodes season two of one piece and there's also going to be a project Hail Mary episode coming up soon to put in a plug for Nicole because she said she was reading the book so.
- 1:53:57[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, awesome.
- 1:53:58[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, she's interested in the coverage
- 1:54:02[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, yeah, and check out our affiliates, of course, uh, properly Howard's doing their newlywed season.
- 1:54:07[SPEAKER_00]: They just did the running man of comparing the two running men's movies.
- 1:54:12[SPEAKER_01]: Um, never, uh, last our fighter is out there, that the most recent episode.
- 1:54:16[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:54:17[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:54:17[SPEAKER_00]: I miss that one.
- 1:54:18[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and never mind the music.
