- 0:00Aloha. Friday morning. I'm Mele with what's happening in Hawaiʻi today.
- 1:49Today feels noticeably drier than the past few days—most of the heavy moisture has moved west. You'll get typical trade wind weather on the leeward sides with low humidity and clear skies. Windward areas will still see light scattered showers, but rain amounts are low. On the Kona coast, watch for spotty heavy afternoon showers—pack an indoor backup if you're heading there this afternoon.
- 2:09South shore Oʻahu is running 4.3 feet—moderate surf with shore break and rip currents, so pick your beach carefully. North shore is smaller at 3.9 feet and comfortable for swimmers, though watch for the occasional larger set. Maui's Kāʻanapali is 3 feet and easy. Big Island's Hapuna is glass-to-small at 1.7 feet, safe for everyone. Kauaʻi's Hanalei is 5.4 feet—moderate and rough.
- 2:28Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is at WATCH status. Kīpukapuaulu Trail is closed due to hazardous trees, and the Sulphur Banks Bridge is closed—but the boardwalk is still open. Kīlauea is actively erupting, so check the park's live cameras before you drive up, and watch out for volcanic ash on downwind sides.
- 2:43If you're heading to the Big Island, our latest piece on Kīlauea Episode 55 covers the precursory lava overflow that started early this week and what to expect before fountaining begins. The park cameras are your best tool—check them before driving, and if you're going up in the next few days, plan around the ash and closures. It's a good reminder to stay current on volcanic activity before you plan your visit.
- 3:04For what's happening this week across the islands, check our this-week page on the site.
- 3:08If you're on the leeward side today, it's a good snorkel and sunset day. Catch you tomorrow.
