- 0:00If you're in your first 30 days of sobriety and wondering
- 0:03yourself, is this normal? Am I doing this right?
- 0:06Let's talk about what you can actually do and what you can
- 0:09expect in the next month. My name is Anthony.
- 0:11I'm an addict in recovery, came into recovery at 2310 years ago.
- 0:16I relapsed after eight years sober and now I'm an addictions
- 0:20counselor giving the message that was passed on to me back on
- 0:23to you. If you're just trying to get
- 0:25sober or you're constantly relapsing and you're wondering
- 0:28what the hell am I doing wrong, this video is for you.
- 0:31We're going to break it down week by week.
- 0:33Cravings, sleep, anxiety, what to expect, social stuff, and
- 0:37what you can actually do each day to stay sober.
- 0:40Quick disclaimer, I'm sharing lived experience.
- 0:42Although I am an addiction counselor, I'm not a medical
- 0:45doctor and if you're physically dependent on alcohol or drugs,
- 0:48you need to go to a doctor and get detox properly and safely.
- 0:51Why are the 1st 30 days such a big deal?
- 0:54This is where most people relapse.
- 0:56They start over and over again. They can't figure out why your
- 1:00body and your brain are coming off of something they haven't
- 1:02been without for a long time. The goal of the next 30 days is
- 1:06not to fix your whole life to feel amazing every day.
- 1:10The real goal is to survive those intense cravings without
- 1:12having to pick up, build tiny, simple routines that make the
- 1:16next day easier, and to show your brain that you can live
- 1:19without alcohol. If you've been drinking heavily,
- 1:21you should see a doctor before detoxing on your own.
- 1:24Alcohol withdrawal is dangerous and lethal.
- 1:27So before you quit drinking, you will feel anxiety, you will miss
- 1:31alcohol. This is all totally normal.
- 1:33I want you to shift your mindset from I have to figure out the
- 1:36rest of my life sober to I'm just not going to drink today.
- 1:39I'm learning how to do today without drinking.
- 1:42All right, so days one to seven, this is a typical experience.
- 1:46So from a physical standpoint, restless sleep or weird dreams,
- 1:51sweat, shakiness, low energy, upset stomach, changes in
- 1:54appetite. From an emotional standpoint,
- 1:56there's going to be a lot of anxiety, repetitive thoughts,
- 2:00mood swings, hope you could be hopeful in the morning and then
- 2:03everything is coming to a screaming halt at night.
- 2:07I remember my first night in this third rehab that I was at.
- 2:10I had these crazy, I had these crazy thoughts of my wife dying
- 2:16on the way home from dropping me off because and there was going
- 2:18to be no way for them to tell me because I was in rehab.
- 2:21Just these crazy thought loops in my head and I was convinced I
- 2:24was like, what if she died? Scary stuff.
- 2:26All totally normal. Talk about it, get it out there.
- 2:30It loses power as soon as you get it out and it's not
- 2:33ruminating in your head. So most important thing is to
- 2:35focus on the 24 hours ahead. That's it.
- 2:39Don't think about tomorrow, Don't think about next week.
- 2:41Don't think about staying sober at your cousin's wedding or your
- 2:43wedding. Can I get through today without
- 2:46a drink? Or even better, can I get
- 2:48through the next 15 minutes without a drink?
- 2:51Drink lots of water, electrolyte drinks, try to eat something
- 2:54even though you're definitely not going to be hungry.
- 2:56Blood sugar crashes make cravings way worse.
- 2:59I want you to simplify your life this week.
- 3:01You might have to say no to some optional social event.
- 3:04Keep your schedule basic sleep, food, movement, support, and
- 3:08when a craving hits, pause, breathe and delay.
- 3:11Tell yourself things like I can drink tomorrow if I still want
- 3:14to, I'm not going to drink today.
- 3:16Change your state, get up, go for a walk, take a cold shower,
- 3:19call a friend, do something else.
- 3:21Get your mind off of it. So week two days, 8 to 14, you
- 3:25might think I'm feeling better. Was it really that bad?
- 3:28It wasn't that bad. I was overreacting back.
- 3:30You know, it's not that bad. I was overreacting.
- 3:32Cravings can be more psychological than physical.
- 3:35Now boredom hits extremely hard. You'll find that when you quit
- 3:39drinking, you have a lot more time to do things.
- 3:42Now that you're not going to the liquor store all the time and
- 3:44trying to find ways to fund your escapades, people might now
- 3:48start asking you why aren't you drinking?
- 3:50Fucking weirdo, right? My favorite thing is when
- 3:53someone offers you a drink in recovery.
- 3:55No, I'm good, I'm just not drinking today.
- 3:57Most of the time people will leave you alone, but if they
- 3:59need to know and they just won't leave, it might be good to give
- 4:03them a little bit of a taste of what it's like what happens when
- 4:06you drink. And maybe it's time to be honest
- 4:09for me. If I pick up that drink today,
- 4:11I'll end up smoking meth again on your couch, crashing your
- 4:14wife's car into the garage, then calling you and asking you to
- 4:16bail me out of jail. Usually that shuts people up.
- 4:19Be aware of the brain negotiation.
- 4:21So maybe I'm not an addict. Maybe I'm not an alcoholic.
- 4:24Maybe I can have beer instead of Scotch.
- 4:28Your brain is going to continually try to trick you
- 4:30into drinking again because your addiction wants you dead.
- 4:33Let's be honest, this is where you can start introducing my one
- 4:36of my favorite tools halt hungry, angry, lonely and tired.
- 4:41Do not make decisions when you are in one of these phases or
- 4:45states of mind. Whenever you have a craving, ask
- 4:47yourself, am I hungry, am I lonely?
- 4:49Am I angry? Am I tired?
- 4:51This is where you should start to build a support system.
- 4:53I mean you can really do this from the beginning in my
- 4:55opinion, but something like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics
- 4:58Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, SMART Recovery, right?
- 5:01Doesn't have to be 12 step. I know a lot of you out there
- 5:04are like fuck you 12 step, you old white bastards.
- 5:08It's to each his own. Listen, I'm not going to stand
- 5:10here and tell you there's only one way to recover.
- 5:12Alcoholics Anonymous does not have a monopoly on recovery.
- 5:16Find your way that works for you, that you like, and that
- 5:18keeps you sober. You need a community of like
- 5:21minded people who are sober because they've gone through
- 5:24what you're going and they can better direct you.
- 5:27Not your mom, not your sister, not your cousin.
- 5:29All right, days 15 to 30, some of your energy is going to start
- 5:32to come back. Brain fog may start to slowly
- 5:35lift. You might be able to start
- 5:36seeing things clearer. You might get some random strong
- 5:40cravings out of nowhere. The other day I was, you know,
- 5:43walking outside and I had this idea that I should probably get
- 5:47into drug dealing because I don't have enough money
- 5:50completely out of nowhere. But that was my brain trying to
- 5:53get me to do drugs again to to jump back into addiction, right?
- 5:56It literally can come out of nowhere.
- 5:58You hear a song, you see someone used to party with, and all of a
- 6:02sudden you think about the good old days, right?
- 6:03How fun was that? It wasn't fun, let's be honest,
- 6:06otherwise you wouldn't be watching this video.
- 6:07It's important at this point to start building life routines,
- 6:10simple stuff that we never did in our drinking and using that
- 6:14people all around the world do every single day.
- 6:16Making your bed, going for a walk in the morning, calling a
- 6:19friend, cooking yourself three meals, brushing your teeth.
- 6:23God when I was on when I was on Vyvanse for a long time I went
- 6:27three days sometimes without showering and brushing my teeth
- 6:29and I didn't even notice it. I abused Vyvanse by the way.
- 6:32I don't have ADHD. If you're a spiritual person, I
- 6:35highly recommend introducing prayer meditation in the
- 6:38mornings. I do journaling and meditation.
- 6:41Getting out all my thoughts. I do 3 pages every single
- 6:44morning. I've just whatever is on my
- 6:46mind, doesn't need to make sense, doesn't have to mean
- 6:48anything, doesn't have to be perfect.
- 6:50I just do it every morning and I find that it clears my mind and
- 6:53allows for more positive thoughts to come.
- 6:55Then at night, reflect on your day.
- 6:57What went well today? What helped keep me sober today?
- 7:00Did I do anything that maybe I shouldn't have done?
- 7:02Do I own an apology somewhere and then make the amends?
- 7:05Recovery is all about honest self appraisal, self searching.
- 7:10I need to learn myself in recovery.
- 7:12I need to learn why I do the things that I do and I need to
- 7:15not do them anymore. If I in order to not do those
- 7:19things anymore, like I don't know, yell at my wife or yell at
- 7:22the guy riding the bike on the street, I need to be aware of
- 7:25them. I need to know that I do them.
- 7:27And I do that by journaling, by getting honest with myself and
- 7:30telling people when I do fucked up shit.
- 7:32Another thing that can help you at this time in your sobriety or
- 7:35anytime really, start doing one thing at a time.
- 7:38You know, we all have bills when we come in that pile up.
- 7:41Maybe you haven't paid the bills in a while.
- 7:43Maybe you haven't, I don't know, fed the dog.
- 7:45Maybe you haven't called your mom in a while.
- 7:47Start doing these little things 1 by 1 and keep a checklist to
- 7:50do simple things. And that get that dopamine rush
- 7:54of like, yeah, I did that today. Good job, Anthony.
- 7:56Way to go. This is huge.
- 7:58Give yourself a break, right? This is hard.
- 8:01It's not easy to get sober. Start to notice the conversation
- 8:04you have with yourself, right? Oh, you fucking idiot.
- 8:06Replace that with I'm just doing the best I can and I make
- 8:09mistakes. I'm a human being and I make
- 8:11mistakes from time to time. Get that vocabulary of I'm a bad
- 8:14person out of your head. It's not going to help you at
- 8:16any point in this journey. All right, Common traps that you
- 8:19will encounter in the first day, 30 days.
- 8:21I feel better now. I'm going to drink normally.
- 8:24I can just have one. Oh my God, I hear that all the
- 8:26time. Let's be honest.
- 8:28When was the last time you just had one of anything?
- 8:30Don't fall back. Try your best not to fall back
- 8:33into that cycle of drinking consequences, swearing you'll
- 8:37never do it again, a few good days or weeks, forgetting all
- 8:41that pain you just cause yourself and then back to maybe
- 8:44I can just have one. You're probably feeling better
- 8:46now because you've removed the substance, not because you can
- 8:50drink normally again. Another trap you might fall into
- 8:53is cross addiction replacing alcohol with sugar or gambling
- 8:58or I don't know zins watch out for this stuff.
- 9:02Shopping is another one. You know at one point my Amazon
- 9:05guy replaced my drug dealer. I'm being dead serious.
- 9:07I'm a lot better now. But hey, if buying sneakers on
- 9:10the Internet is going to keep you sober another day, go for it
- 9:13man. Your brain is looking for
- 9:15dopamine right now so you might be so scrolling on social media
- 9:18more. You might be gambling.
- 9:20Just be aware of that stuff shopping included.
- 9:22You just removed an important, the main really source of
- 9:26dopamine that you were getting for all this time.
- 9:28Beware of that trap 4 all or nothing, right?
- 9:31We are very black and white thinkers.
- 9:33I missed the meeting. I suck at this.
- 9:35What's the point? I ate terribly last night, might
- 9:38as well go drink. You can mess up your day without
- 9:40throwing away your sobriety. Just get to tonight.
- 9:43It's progress, not perfection. All right, I'm going to walk you
- 9:46through a quick template of a day, if you will, in recovery.
- 9:49That's going to be beneficial for you.
- 9:51Wake up, drink water, hygiene routine, make your coffee reads
- 9:56recovery literature journal, pray, meditate, say something
- 10:00out loud like today's going to be a great day or I'm choosing
- 10:04not to drink today, I will reassess tomorrow.
- 10:07If that sounds stupid and I don't know hoaxy to you right
- 10:11now, just try it. What do you have to lose?
- 10:13Maybe you're wrong about getting sober.
- 10:15I know I was. I needed help.
- 10:17Next, move your body. So go to the gym, go for a walk,
- 10:20something simple doesn't need to be a 2 hour thing at the gym
- 10:23where you're lifting with all the Bros, 5/10/15 minutes on the
- 10:27treadmill, anything, bike, whatever.
- 10:29Move your body. Eat something real every three
- 10:31to four hours. If a craving hits, go back to
- 10:34the halt. Hungry, angry, lonely, tired.
- 10:37What am I actually feeling right now?
- 10:38Do I really want alcohol or am I hungry, angry, lonely and tired?
- 10:42Text or call someone or listen to a recovery podcast to get
- 10:44through it. It'll always pass.
- 10:46I promise you, this too shall pass.
- 10:48Every craving will pass eventually.
- 10:51You have to do something about it.
- 10:51You can't just sit in it and will your way through it.
- 10:55You've done that long enough. Time for something new.
- 10:58Start a gratitude list. One to three things you're
- 11:00grateful for, even if it's as simple and seemingly
- 11:03insignificant as I'm grateful for coffee, I'm grateful for my
- 11:06legs, I'm grateful for my family.
- 11:09Write it down, get it out. You don't need to feel confident
- 11:13to be sober. Just keep making one good
- 11:16decision at a time, and if you can't do the next right thing,
- 11:20do the next thing right. I'm just not drinking today.
- 11:24Just don't drink today. Get those bed sober, get to
- 11:26midnight sober. I'll reassess tomorrow.
- 11:29And if you're like me and you've relapsed 1000 times, you're not
- 11:33alone though. As long as you're still alive,
- 11:35you still have. There is still hope.
- 11:37As long as you're still alive, there is still hope for you.
- 11:41Keep trying, don't give up if you keep relapsing, maybe you
- 11:44need a new plan, maybe you need to ask somebody else for help
- 11:47and then follow the direction I want you to.
- 11:49Drop your sobriety date in the comments.
- 11:51How long you been going for? Tell me how your day is going.
- 11:55Check in with me. Recovery is simple, not easy.
- 11:58I've been doing this for 10 years and I'm anything but
- 12:01perfect. I fuck up all the time, but what
- 12:03I don't do today is pick up a drink or a drug and I pick up
- 12:07the phone before I take that drink or drug.
- 12:10Most important thing. Hardest thing.
- 12:12Most important thing.
