- 0:00Hey, it's Sarah. I am so glad that you were here
- 0:04again. Now, whether you stumbled onto
- 0:06this tonight or you came back because something in you needed
- 0:10to, I want you to know that this space is for you.
- 0:14Just you, right here, right now. So imagine that in this moment,
- 0:21I am just a Lantern in the dark, shining a little bit of light so
- 0:25that you can see the next few steps.
- 0:28Because tonight I want to talk to you about fear.
- 0:32And not the kind that makes you jump when a door slams, but like
- 0:35the quieter kind. The kind that lives in your
- 0:39chest and makes decisions on your behalf before you even
- 0:43realize it happened. Now, yesterday morning we talked
- 0:48about being the lighthouse and about cultivating that
- 0:51steadiness inside yourself and those small daily moments that
- 0:56anchor you so that when the storm comes, you become the
- 1:00stillness other people navigate by.
- 1:03You become the stillness for yourself.
- 1:06But tonight I want to sit with the part that doesn't get talked
- 1:10about enough. What happens before you become
- 1:14the lighthouse? And what happens when the storm
- 1:18is inside of you and it's wearing the face of fear.
- 1:22And I'm willing to bet you might be a little bit afraid tonight
- 1:26of something. And if you're really truly
- 1:29honest with yourself, just sit with that.
- 1:32What are you afraid of right now?
- 1:36Because here's what fear does that nobody tells you.
- 1:41It doesn't announce itself. It doesn't walk in and say
- 1:45hello, I'm fear. And I'm about to run your life
- 1:48for a little while. It comes in dressed as logic and
- 1:53as practicality, and I'm just being realistic.
- 2:00It comes in as the reason you don't send the message or the
- 2:05reason that you don't take the leap, that you don't leave, that
- 2:10you don't stay, that you don't ask for what you need, that you
- 2:16don't believe you deserve what you want.
- 2:20And fear is a masterful disguise artist.
- 2:24And when fear is at the wheel, we think we're driving.
- 2:30So I want to ask you something, and I want you to just sit with
- 2:34it. And you don't have to answer out
- 2:36loud. Is there a decision you're
- 2:40carrying right now? Something you've been circling
- 2:44or avoiding or rushing toward that might be coming from fear
- 2:49rather than the truth. And I know that's a tough ask
- 2:54and I know it's, it can be even scarier to have to really sit
- 2:59with that question and own it. But that's why I'm sitting here
- 3:03with you. No judgment, no assumptions, no
- 3:07expectations. Just notice.
- 3:08Is there something that you are carrying right now that you've
- 3:13been circling, avoiding, dodging, that might be coming
- 3:20from fear rather than the truth? And just notice if something
- 3:25comes up, just sit with it for a minute.
- 3:30Because here's what I've come to understand about fear based
- 3:34decisions. They almost always have a
- 3:38particular feeling to them. They feel urgent and contracted
- 3:45and restrictive and like you need to decide right now or
- 3:50something terrible will happen. Kind of like if you slow down,
- 3:55everything might fall apart. But that urgency and that
- 4:00tightness, that's not wisdom talking.
- 4:04That's a nervous system that learned a very, very long time
- 4:08ago that uncertainty equals danger.
- 4:15Just think about that. It feels dangerous when we just
- 4:18don't know. And that makes sense.
- 4:21It makes complete sense because at some point in your life,
- 4:25probably when you were very young, uncertainty was
- 4:29dangerous. And hell, it might have.
- 4:31You might have had moments like that as an adult, and
- 4:35unpredictability might have meant that someone wasn't
- 4:39coming, or that someone was coming and you didn't know what
- 4:45you were getting and it wasn't safe, whether physically,
- 4:50emotionally, mentally, and it may have actually been safe, but
- 4:56you perceived that it wasn't. So your body learned to scan and
- 5:02to brace and to decide fast and to decide preemptively, because
- 5:08waiting felt like a threat. And that was survival then.
- 5:14I want you to hear that it was survival in those moments, and
- 5:20it kept you going. But it might be running the show
- 5:23now in places it was never meant to reach.
- 5:29So what do we do with that? And this is where I want to
- 5:33bring you back right now, gently into your body, because fear
- 5:38lives in the body before it ever becomes a thought.
- 5:43And the lighthouse, your lighthouse is built in your body
- 5:48too. So let's just do one small thing
- 5:52together. Wherever you are right now,
- 5:55sitting lying down in your car, I want you to feel the surface
- 5:59beneath you, the chair, the bed, the seat, Feel it hold you.
- 6:05Literally put your hands on whatever surface is underneath
- 6:09you right now and just feel it. close your eyes so that you can
- 6:15stay in the moment and really notice what you're feeling under
- 6:18your hands. Now I want you to take one
- 6:23breath, just one in through your nose, slow, and then let it out
- 6:28through your mouth. So we're going to do it right
- 6:30now. Now that exhale, that's your
- 6:42nervous system being told you are safe right now in this
- 6:47moment, you are OK. The inhale that is bringing in
- 6:54so much beautiful air, but the exhale that my friends, that is
- 7:00where you calm your system down. And remember, you don't have to
- 7:05make the big decision tonight. You don't have to have it
- 7:08figured out. That's fear that's been rushing
- 7:12you, and it can wait. You are allowed to slow down
- 7:19because the lighthouse doesn't make decisions in the middle of
- 7:22the storm. It holds steady and it stays lit
- 7:26and it waits for the water to settle, and then it shows the
- 7:29way. And you are building that in
- 7:33yourself. And every small moment you
- 7:36choose presence over panic and every breath where you come back
- 7:39to your body instead of disappearing into the spiral
- 7:43that is the work. And you are already doing it
- 7:46because you're here. So tonight, before you sleep, I
- 7:51want to leave you with just one question to sit with.
- 7:55Not to answer, just to hold it. Is this decision coming from the
- 8:00truest part of me, or from the part of me that's still afraid?
- 8:05And you don't have to know the answer yet.
- 8:08Just asking the question is enough.
- 8:11And you're not alone in this. Whatever you're carrying
- 8:13tonight, the uncertainty, the fear, the weight of not knowing
- 8:16what comes next, you are not alone in it.
- 8:21And I'll be back Thursday with another few moments of being
- 8:28present with you and holding up that Lantern so that you can see
- 8:31a little bit further ahead. And until then, I'll leave the
- 8:36Lantern right here next to you so that you can remember there
- 8:41is always a little bit of light and you are never alone.
- 8:44But for tonight, just rest and just breathe.
- 8:48You're OK.
