- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:06podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm our host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:13you by the Great News Podcast because good news should be
- 0:17heard. And the link is in the show
- 0:20notes. Today's quote comes from Robert
- 0:23Frost, four time Pulitzer Prize winner, one of the most beloved
- 0:28poets in American history, and a man whose personal life was
- 0:32marked by a degree of loss and grief that most of us will never
- 0:36be asked to carry. He outlived four of his six
- 0:39children, He watched his wife die of cancer, He committed his
- 0:44sister to a mental institution, and he battled depression his
- 0:48entire life. He wrote from inside all this
- 0:52difficulty, not around it, through it.
- 0:57And from that place he gave us this six word quote, which is
- 1:01paraphrased from his 1914 poem A Servant to Servants.
- 1:08He once wrote. The only way out is through.
- 1:14No comfort, no shortcut, no promise that it won't hurt.
- 1:19Just the plainest, most honest truth about how human beings
- 1:22survive hard things. You go through them, think about
- 1:27what the alternative actually looks like.
- 1:30Avoidance. The refusal to face what needs
- 1:32to be faced. It might work briefly.
- 1:36The grief gets pushed down. The difficult conversation gets
- 1:39postponed. The painful truth gets ignored.
- 1:43The hard season gets numbed, distracted, deferred, and for a
- 1:48while the pressure eases. But avoidance doesn't end the
- 1:52thing. It suspends it.
- 1:55The grief that isn't grieved doesn't disappear.
- 1:58It calcifies. The conversation that isn't had
- 2:03doesn't resolve. It festers.
- 2:05The problem that isn't faced doesn't shrink.
- 2:07It waits and grows. And at some point, often at the
- 2:13worst possible moment, what was avoided comes back heavier,
- 2:17harder and more demanding than it would have been if you'd gone
- 2:20through it when it first arrived.
- 2:23Frost understood this not as a philosophical position, but as a
- 2:27lived reality. He lost his father at 11 years
- 2:31old, leaving the family with almost nothing.
- 2:34He watched his son Carol die by suicide, his daughter Marjorie
- 2:40die after childbirth. His first son, Elliot, died of
- 2:43cholera as a child. He could not go around any of
- 2:47this. The only path forward was
- 2:50through, through the grief, through the Depression, through
- 2:54the loss, through the next morning and the one after that.
- 2:59And he kept writing. He became one of the most highly
- 3:02honored American poets of the 20th century, not in spite of
- 3:07what he went through, because going through it made him who he
- 3:11became. And sometimes it isn't a death
- 3:15or a major life set back that you need to get through.
- 3:18Sometimes it is just the work that needs to be done to achieve
- 3:22what you want. Seth Godin calls this process
- 3:26the dip. When you have a goal or a new
- 3:28business or a new podcast or blog or whatever it is and you
- 3:33are excited at first, but then the work gets harder and the
- 3:37initial motivation starts to fade.
- 3:40This is where a lot of people quit and give up on their dream
- 3:43or their goal. But Seth Godin says push through
- 3:47the dip and it'll be easier on the other side.
- 3:51On the other side, you are stronger and a better version of
- 3:53yourself and the thing you're building might gain momentum.
- 3:58That's not a promise that the going through it won't cost you
- 4:02something. It will.
- 4:04Going through always does, but there is something on the other
- 4:08side of through that staying put or quitting never reaches.
- 4:13You don't get that by staying put, you don't get it by trying
- 4:18to avoid it, only by going through.
- 4:21So here's the question, what are you currently trying to avoid?
- 4:26A tough situation, pain, loss, an identity crisis, or just
- 4:33getting through the hard work at building something.
- 4:38Because Robert Frost is not offering you easy comfort here.
- 4:43He's offering you something better.
- 4:45An honest map on how to get out. The path exists.
- 4:50It goes through the middle of the hard thing, not around the
- 4:55edges of it, and not by camping out in the hard place
- 4:58indefinitely. You don't have to be ready.
- 5:02You don't have to be brave, you just have to keep moving.
- 5:07The only way out is through. That's it for today.
- 5:12I'm Anna McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 5:18tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 5:24with another daily quote.
