- 0:14You are listening to Look Who's Talking. I am
- 0:18Cameron Minter. I am your co -host and the wonderful.
- 0:22Thank you. Head Start Director Jessica Coffey
- 0:25is your host. What's going on, Jessica? Hi, everyone.
- 0:30What you know, what you know, what you know.
- 0:31You just came back from a trip, right? I did.
- 0:34I went to Mardi Gras. Ooh. Yep. So here's the
- 0:39question I have for you. Uh -huh. Did you fly
- 0:41or did you drive? Ooh, I flew, Cam. Ooh, you
- 0:45are brave. So where did you fly? Like what, airline?
- 0:50Yeah. American. Oh, okay. I'm usually a Delta
- 0:53person, but I flew American. And why would you
- 0:57fly American as opposed to Delta? Well, this
- 1:00time, because the flight was cheaper, I went
- 1:02for the cheapest flight. And I must say that
- 1:07I was holding on tight. I know, right? Yeah.
- 1:11I know, right? You take some anointing oil and
- 1:13cover the door. All of it, okay? I was praying
- 1:17without ceasing, okay? I know. Yeah. Hold up.
- 1:22So I didn't tell my parents that I was going.
- 1:27Oh, wow. Because being a 42 -year -old, you still
- 1:30have to tell your parents. You better. So my
- 1:33mom found out. No. Yes, she did. No, not that
- 1:39way. Okay, let me go back to the reason I didn't
- 1:42tell is because, you know, they always, they
- 1:45just worry too much. They're doing the most.
- 1:47And my dad would have been like. You know the
- 1:50plane's going to fall from the sky because all
- 1:53these planes been falling from the sky. So I
- 1:56said, you know what? I want peace for this trip.
- 2:00I'm not going to tell them. So what I'll do is
- 2:02I'll tell my sister. She ratted you out. No,
- 2:06she didn't. It was my aunt, my mom's sister.
- 2:10So I posted a story, right? And my parents are
- 2:14not on Facebook. So my mom. She was over my sisters,
- 2:20and she was like, yeah, we haven't heard from
- 2:24you. Where you been? And then my nephew said
- 2:27anything, so I didn't have to answer, right?
- 2:30So we were talking. I was like, okay, I'll let
- 2:33y 'all go. Bye. She texted me the next morning
- 2:36and said, so where you at? And I said, huh? Then
- 2:43I said, oh, I'm in New Orleans. Who told you?
- 2:45And I said her sister's name. Why is she going
- 2:49to not tell the truth and say, oh, I saw it on
- 2:55the news. Girl, no, you didn't. You saw me on
- 3:01the news in New Orleans. Right. So then my aunt
- 3:03causing was like, I didn't know you didn't tell
- 3:06your mom. Listen. Yeah. Yeah. You're right, though.
- 3:12You're right. I don't tell my mom. I tell my
- 3:15mom after I've landed and back home for a couple
- 3:18of days, I'm like, yeah. Because the whole time,
- 3:20she's going to do things that she doesn't normally
- 3:22do. Like, I call my parents, right? I don't want
- 3:26you calling me because then that will worry me.
- 3:28I'm calling y 'all. And then she'll do stuff
- 3:32when I'm out of town, like text me at 6 in the
- 3:35morning and say, y 'all having fun? Right. Girl,
- 3:40I am asleep. Cam. Your mother is my mother. Yeah.
- 3:45So, but then I said, when she said, where are
- 3:49you? I told her where I was. And then I said,
- 3:51well, I didn't tell you because I didn't want
- 3:53daddy worried. He would have said the plane would
- 3:56have fell out the sky. So then she said. Well,
- 3:59I ain't going to say nothing. I don't know. Right,
- 4:02right. Then I said, thank you, mother. You know,
- 4:05hyped her up. Yeah, yeah. It's clear your parents
- 4:08don't listen to the show, and I don't know how
- 4:10to fix that. I'm going to have to get them on
- 4:12the show. Listen, I don't need them listening
- 4:14to the show. You know what? I'm going to get
- 4:16with Elizabeth, and I'm going to have them call
- 4:18in one show. Oh, my God, yes. That sounds like
- 4:21a perfect show. Elizabeth, we're going to do
- 4:24that. We're going to do that. Okay. No, that
- 4:26wouldn't be a good idea. That would be hilarious.
- 4:30And I tell you, oh, my God, that would be wonderful.
- 4:35I don't think. We should make that a segment.
- 4:37I do not see that as being funny at all. Oh,
- 4:41God, that's going to be great. The bloopers and
- 4:45everything is just going to be great. Oh, that's
- 4:48just so wrong. I know, I know. Yeah, I'm concerned
- 4:53about getting on the plane right now. I really
- 4:56am. You are? Yeah. You know what? I mean, there
- 5:02was a little turbulence. Well, there was one
- 5:05time we landed, and it was like we bounced pretty
- 5:08high. But other than that, I did feel safe. I
- 5:13did. Okay. Yeah. The mind is a terrible thing,
- 5:18you know. The mind is a terrible thing. I know.
- 5:21It'll send you places you ain't even have an
- 5:23invite for, you know. Yeah. But you know what?
- 5:26When I get on a plane, I just try to go to sleep
- 5:29as quick as possible. I knew somebody who was
- 5:32so bad they tried to get drunk. And it didn't
- 5:35work out. They just needed to do something to
- 5:39cool their nerves. I was like, wow, that's a
- 5:41lot. It's the morning time and you're tripping.
- 5:44Listen, take some Benadryl. Don't get me wrong,
- 5:48you're going to be draggy, but I don't know.
- 5:53I was good. But you are a travel connoisseur.
- 5:59Yeah, I like flying the friendly skies. Yeah,
- 6:01yeah. I do. Okay, what's the word? No, not the
- 6:06word. What is our Coffie Break for today? Okay.
- 6:11I think it's time for a Coffie. It's time. Okay,
- 6:21so guys, for today's Coffie Break, I want to
- 6:24say there is a past version of you that is so
- 6:28proud of how far you have come. What you think
- 6:32about that, Ken? That's good. That's good. I
- 6:35really like those, you know, those movies and
- 6:39shows that have people, you know, running into
- 6:42themselves in the future or in the past. You
- 6:44know, and just the question always is, what would
- 6:48you tell yourself? You know what I'm saying?
- 6:51And to be able to say, you know, I'm proud of
- 6:53you. Yeah, yeah. And to know that. Where my future
- 6:59me is sees things that I still don't understand
- 7:02and haven't walked into. And to be able to know
- 7:06that, hey, it's all a journey. It's not a sprint.
- 7:09It's a marathon. And so, yeah, that's good. I'm
- 7:13proud of it. I think, yeah, looking back on my
- 7:18old self, let's go back to the 20 -year -old
- 7:22self. Don't go too far. I would say, like, continue
- 7:29being you because it works for you. Like, don't
- 7:32get me wrong. I have evolved. But, well, you
- 7:37have experienced my personality. And, you know,
- 7:40at some point, like, people try to say, hey,
- 7:43you need to calm down. And that's not it. It's
- 7:46part of who you are. Yeah. Like, being able to
- 7:49evolve and get to know me and my personality,
- 7:54good and bad. I think is how I became who I am
- 7:59today. Absolutely. There's a part of me, and
- 8:01I'm older than you, but as I get older, I don't
- 8:05care what other people think. I don't care about,
- 8:09you know what I'm saying? I'm so concentrated
- 8:12on what God has in store for me and my family
- 8:17and just doing that. I don't have time. I don't
- 8:21have space to be concerned about. You know, your
- 8:24thoughts of me. Yeah. And that's freeing. And
- 8:27you know what? Like, stepping into this decade
- 8:32of 40s. You're getting there, ain't you? I'm
- 8:3642, Cam. You missed a couple of birthdays. Well,
- 8:39I mean, you're getting there. Yeah. But what
- 8:41I'm saying is you're getting to that point. You
- 8:44know the old lady at your church who would tell
- 8:47you anything that's on their mind? That type
- 8:50of freedom? Yeah. That's coming. I think, yeah,
- 8:54I think I'm just. You show his fat. Girl, you
- 8:58bigger than me. How you going to talk? I think
- 9:01I'm only like an hour away from that. You're
- 9:03an hour away from that? I'm only an hour away
- 9:06from that right there. That's what I'm saying.
- 9:08That freedom, though. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I'm living
- 9:13a free. You're going to fully embrace that part.
- 9:15I am living a free life right now. You know,
- 9:18in a peaceful life now, I really understand when
- 9:22people say it's all about peace for me. We're
- 9:26just talking about that, right? When we get home,
- 9:28some of our best times is in our bedroom. In
- 9:33the house. In the house. Doing nothing. Nathan.
- 9:38Maybe watching a little TV. Satisfied. Satisfied.
- 9:41I know. I just didn't think that would be. Why
- 9:46didn't anybody give me an adult manual that said,
- 9:49hey, when you get to this age, this is what you're
- 9:54going to like. Right, right. Coming home, getting
- 9:56comfortable, and doing nothing. And call it a
- 9:59day. Call it a day. What time did you lay down?
- 10:03About 8. Right, right. Listen, those are the
- 10:07best days. Those are my favorite days. Yeah,
- 10:09but you get up way too early. Exercising. I know,
- 10:13and I went to the gym this morning at 5 .30.
- 10:16Proud of you. I know. Did I tell you I'm down?
- 10:20Come on. 15 pounds. Look at that. Look at that.
- 10:23You had me walking around looking like the Pillsbury
- 10:26Doughman on this show. Don't put it on me. Anyway.
- 10:28You did. We should have talked about that, Cam.
- 10:31It might have had something to do with what you
- 10:32was eating, but. Who's on the show today? I stopped
- 10:38working out for like two or three months. Yeah,
- 10:40yeah. When it comes to the holiday time, like
- 10:45October, November, December, that is. It's over.
- 10:49I just, you know, try to gain weight to see if
- 10:52I could lose it. Oh, okay. At least this was.
- 10:56But guess what? Matter of fact, talking about
- 10:59eating and nutrition. Let's talk about it. Today
- 11:01on the show, we have Jen Robertson with UK Cooperative
- 11:06Extinction. Hi, Jen. Welcome to the show, Jen.
- 11:10Thank you all for having me today. Can you get
- 11:12us back on track? I mean, because, you know,
- 11:14we done went. I don't know. Y 'all talking food
- 11:17and exercise and flying. I'm here for all of
- 11:20that. Sounds like a good vacation. Yes. So, Jen.
- 11:24I don't know if they told you, but my background
- 11:26is nutrition and I love everything nutrition,
- 11:29food and all of it. So tell us a little bit about
- 11:31yourself and how you got into Cooperative Extension.
- 11:35OK, so also love food and nutrition. And I originally
- 11:39got into nutrition and dietetics because I was
- 11:42like, hey, I love eating. Let's figure out how
- 11:45this. can benefit our bodies and um also the
- 11:50point of exercise as well as you all mentioned
- 11:53i also went and did a degree in exercise and
- 11:56wellness so i was like let's just marry all of
- 11:58those and Proud graduate of Eastern Kentucky
- 12:01University. And then this opportunity came open
- 12:06with the University of Kentucky with Cooperative
- 12:09Extension in the Nutrition Education Program.
- 12:11And I was like, let's jump on it. Let's do it.
- 12:13I had worked in the realm of employee wellness
- 12:17in the past for Goodwill Industries of Kentucky
- 12:20and a company called Wellness Coaches USA. And
- 12:23that was great and good, but I was ready to focus
- 12:26on just the nutrition aspect of it. Here we are
- 12:29almost six years later. So y 'all love food for
- 12:32a different reason than I do. I just love it
- 12:35purely for the fun. For the fun of it. Yeah.
- 12:37And that's good too. Yes. Totally. So tell us
- 12:42and some of our listeners, what is Cooperative
- 12:45Extension? What do you all do? Such a good question.
- 12:48And that we get asked a lot. And people are like,
- 12:50wait, I didn't know y 'all did all of that. And
- 12:53so with Cooperative Extension, it is a branch
- 12:56of the USDA. or I should say a partnership between
- 12:59the USDA in Kentucky, USDA, the University of
- 13:03Kentucky, and Kentucky State University, as well
- 13:06as, as y 'all know, we have 120 counties in Kentucky.
- 13:08Free state? Yes, the whole state. We cover it
- 13:12all. And what we do is we go out and we have
- 13:15an office in every county. And again, we have
- 13:17that partnership with K -State. And we have agents,
- 13:21county extension agents in every county that
- 13:24provide research -based education to businesses,
- 13:28families within the community, other partners
- 13:31in the community to where we can just really
- 13:33help to... better Kentucky as a whole and Kentuckians
- 13:37and provide them with access to nutrition education.
- 13:41Or if it's, you know, they need information about
- 13:44beekeeping. We provide that as well with an extension.
- 13:47And so within extension, there are four main
- 13:51program areas, which are agriculture and natural
- 13:55resources, horticulture. Then we have family
- 13:58and consumer sciences extension and then 4 -H
- 14:01youth development. And, yeah, we just marry all
- 14:05of those programs together to really bring a
- 14:08holistic approach to the state. So where we can
- 14:12provide that education and, like I said, just
- 14:14hopefully make families and people and businesses
- 14:16and everybody's lives a little bit better. Yeah.
- 14:19I love that. I love that aspect. With everything
- 14:23that's going on with our eggs and stuff like
- 14:28that, we need to get as much. It's funny you
- 14:32brought that up because I was going to say, do
- 14:35you teach people how to raise chickens and eggs?
- 14:41But the agriculture, we definitely need to be
- 14:45planting our food. Being able to do something
- 14:49with that. But we're going to talk more with
- 14:52Jen right after this break. You are listening
- 14:54to Look Who's Talking. This past year has highlighted
- 15:09the strength of Community Action Council. Every
- 15:12day, our staff works together to help families
- 15:14recover from this crisis. We're educating children
- 15:17at home and in person, helping parents who lost

- 15:26been more important than it is right now. So
- 15:28why not join us? We have employment opportunities

- 16:08That's c -o -m -m -action .org. Look who's talking.
- 16:39And we're here with Jen Robertson with the Cooperative
- 16:42Extinction. So, Jen, I have some questions about
- 16:46some questions about just what kind of nutrition
- 16:52programming do you all offer? Great question.
- 16:55So our program, which is called the Nutrition
- 16:59Education Program for Kentucky, is administered
- 17:02through the University of Kentucky under the
- 17:04Family and Consumer Sciences Branch of Extension.
- 17:07And the programs that we offer are pretty vast
- 17:11between all the way from pre -K youth all the
- 17:14way up to senior citizens, maybe grandparents
- 17:16raising their grandchildren. We also offer programming
- 17:20to people that are in recovery as well. And it
- 17:24is. It's nutrition education where we go in.
- 17:26We have approximately 60 program assistants throughout
- 17:30the state that go in and teach nutrition education.
- 17:34We don't have a program assistant in all 120
- 17:36counties, but we do some cross -county programming
- 17:39when the need is there. And those program assistants,
- 17:43they really go out and they teach. Whether it's
- 17:46eating better on a budget, how to read a nutrition
- 17:49label, food safety in the kitchen. So whenever
- 17:52you are going in and cooking those eggs or you're
- 17:54storing those eggs, are we doing it properly?
- 17:56Yeah. Because, you know, those things are expensive
- 17:59right now, so we can't be wasting no eggs. Don't
- 18:01talk about it. Don't talk about it. So we go
- 18:05in and we really teach just how can we prepare
- 18:08nutritious, healthy meals on a budget and it
- 18:11be affordable? And then also, how are we going
- 18:14to store those meals? after you've cooked them.
- 18:16And just a huge aspect as well is just stretching
- 18:20those food dollars. We all can do that these
- 18:23days. Right, absolutely. Yeah, so we really focus
- 18:26on that and teach our audience. So I should say
- 18:28our target audience is those low -income, limited
- 18:32-resource families that really need that help
- 18:35and could utilize these tools that we have that
- 18:38we can bring to them as far as the nutrition
- 18:40education aspect of it. Right, so is there a
- 18:43fee? that you will have to pay in order to participate?
- 18:47Good news, there's no fee. Oh, free. Yeah, we
- 18:50love free. Not many things are these days. So
- 18:53if you're a participant in our program, you can
- 18:56come in free of charge. And we actually like
- 19:00to give away what we call our reinforcement items,
- 19:03that they are incentive items that actually...
- 19:05They're kitchen tools and kitchen gadgets that
- 19:07go along with the skills we're teaching in our
- 19:10nutrition education. And so that's why we call
- 19:12them our reinforcements. They reinforce the lesson.
- 19:15But in our minds, we think, okay, well, if we're
- 19:18going to teach them how to use a meat thermometer,
- 19:19why not give them one so then they can go and
- 19:22practice what we've taught them. Right. And then,
- 19:25too, just some people don't necessarily have
- 19:28that equipment. If it's a colander that you need
- 19:31to, you know, drain out those can of green beans
- 19:33or your corn to make your recipe. Giving them
- 19:37that, giving them mixing bowls that they then
- 19:39can go use in their kitchen, and hopefully that
- 19:42will help to elicit that positive behavior change
- 19:44for them that we have taught throughout our program.
- 19:47Right. That's great. I like that. Yeah. Did you
- 19:50all do much with recipes and things of that nature?
- 19:52Good question. It was on my mind. It's like you
- 19:55read my mind here. So we actually have, and they're
- 19:58out right now, we do a food and nutrition calendar
- 20:00every year. And in that, we have 12 recipes.
- 20:04So there's a recipe of the month. And there's
- 20:07a cost analysis breakdown of what it'll cost
- 20:09you to buy all the ingredients. Yeah. And then
- 20:12per serving, what it would cost. And then throughout,
- 20:15of course, there's tips from MyPlate and the
- 20:18USDA. as far as just tips and tricks on nutrition
- 20:21and ways to incorporate healthier foods into
- 20:25whatever budget you may have. And then in the
- 20:28back of our calendar, there's also recipe cards
- 20:30that you can tear out and keep. Because a lot
- 20:32of people, they're like, oh, I'm done with this,
- 20:34you know, 2025 calendar. But you can have the
- 20:36recipe cards that you can then keep, which is
- 20:38nice. And we also have, I think we have, gosh,
- 20:42a library of over 400 recipes on our public -facing
- 20:46website, which is planeatmove .com. And there's
- 20:49tons of resources on there that anybody can go
- 20:52and access, whether it's growing your own garden.
- 20:56whether it is you're wanting to, you know, a
- 20:58soup recipe or learning to use a slow cooker.
- 21:02If there's some farmer market or not recipes,
- 21:04but farmer market tips and tricks on there for
- 21:07people that would like to utilize those. So there's
- 21:09again, plan, eat, move .com. I love to plug that
- 21:11always. Plan, eat, move .com. Plan, eat, move
- 21:15.com. So one of the things that I love, and I'm
- 21:19not sure if you all do this, but. like a cost
- 21:22analysis of going out to eat versus cooking at
- 21:25home. Do you all have that type of information?
- 21:27So there is actually a tool, an interactive tool
- 21:30that we utilize whenever we, I believe it. It's
- 21:34within one of our lessons. We have seven lessons
- 21:36that we utilize in our programming, and it's
- 21:39in one of the lessons. I think it's healthy,
- 21:41affordable meals. And there is a breakdown in
- 21:44that, an interactive tool that we go through
- 21:46with our participants where they can put in their
- 21:49family size and then the amount that they already
- 21:53spend on groceries a month, and it will tell
- 21:55the breakdown of, okay, well, these are all of
- 21:57the items that you can purchase going to the
- 21:59grocery store versus going out to eat. This is
- 22:02what it would cost you. So our participants get
- 22:05access to that tool where they can utilize that
- 22:07as well. That was a great question. Yeah, it's
- 22:09funny. You spend the money, and before you know
- 22:13it, if you have something that breaks down how
- 22:16much you've gone out to eat. Oh, my gosh, yes.
- 22:18Yeah, it's quite telling. Oh, most definitely,
- 22:22for sure. But it's important. And the worst part,
- 22:26probably the population of families that you
- 22:30serve will. eat fast food, which is not, you
- 22:35know, helping at all. Right. And you could have
- 22:39had a four -course meal. Yeah. Oh, most certainly.
- 22:43Healthy, yeah. So that's really good information.
- 22:47Definitely so. So what are some of the misconceptions
- 22:51that people might come to you and ask about in
- 22:56regards to nutrition, food safety? Well, I think
- 23:00the biggest one that we often get whenever our
- 23:03program assistants are in teaching is what you
- 23:06had just said. They feel like they can go out
- 23:09to eat and it will be cheaper than buying their
- 23:11groceries and preparing their meals. So that
- 23:14really is just the whole basis of our, well,
- 23:16the biggest basis of our program is to really
- 23:19teach them, hey, you can go afford these things.
- 23:21Here we've equipped you to read a nutrition label
- 23:24to show you we can get this much protein or this
- 23:27many, you know, vitamins and minerals from it.
- 23:29whether you're trying to limit carbohydrates
- 23:31or whatever it may be, we try to equip them with
- 23:35those tools because we hear that a lot, that
- 23:38they feel like they can just go out and eat and
- 23:40buy the whatever junk food that they want. It's
- 23:43much cheaper than going and buying a bag of grapes
- 23:45or something. And then with children, when I've
- 23:48gone with my program assistants and watched them
- 23:51teach to a youth group, Head Start being one
- 23:53of them in many cases, you'll see those kids
- 23:56are like, I've tried that before and I don't.
- 23:58like it it's gross i'm not doing it and so we
- 24:01always have them do what we call a hello bite
- 24:04to see if um just to say we you know at least
- 24:08try it put it in your mouth see what it feels
- 24:10like see what it tastes like and then if you
- 24:12don't like it here's a napkin you can spit it
- 24:14out and so there's been so and it's so rewarding
- 24:17to hear those kids say oh my gosh i've never
- 24:19tried kiwi before and i love this i'm gonna see
- 24:23if my mom will buy it for me and it's just it's
- 24:26just amazing to see those just revelations that
- 24:29they almost have. It's like, oh my gosh, this
- 24:31is tasty. I would much rather have this than,
- 24:34you know, whether it might be that bag of Skittles
- 24:37or licorice. Now, listen, we all like that stuff.
- 24:39Don't say it. Don't go too far. But there's always
- 24:42a good balance, right? So I think it's just,
- 24:46it's great to be able to see those improvements.
- 24:48I love seeing like our kids in the classroom
- 24:51and parents say, well, they don't eat that at
- 24:54home. And then in our classroom, they're trying
- 24:56everything. I think it's important for the environment
- 25:00to be conducive to, you know, children on their
- 25:04level where their friends and their teachers
- 25:07are eating and talking about the foods they're
- 25:10eating. And at least I love the Hello Bite. That's
- 25:14cute. I think one other thing is, too, like there
- 25:18are times when my body speaks to me and I'm not
- 25:21listening to what it's saying. uh like i'm thirsty
- 25:25and i'll drink and i'll drink and i'll drink
- 25:27and i'm still thirsty and as soon as i get that
- 25:30water then my body is like that's what i wanted
- 25:34you know yeah yeah so i think being able to is
- 25:37is there some some help in in listening to what
- 25:42our bodies is saying that we absolutely need.
- 25:45Most certainly, yeah. And you brought up the
- 25:48point. So we have in our core lessons for our
- 25:51adults, we have a choosing better beverages lesson.
- 25:54So I'm glad you brought that up. And then. One
- 25:57of our favorite curriculum that we just implemented
- 26:01is called Cook Together, Eat Together, Families
- 26:03in the Kitchen. Oh, yeah. And the whole concept,
- 26:07as you can imagine, is to bring families together,
- 26:09to get them cooking, to get the parents and the
- 26:11children involved in the kitchen to where, hey,
- 26:14you all can make this meal together, and it's
- 26:16easy, it's fun to do it, and also it's that bonding
- 26:19time, right? We always talk about, hey, let's
- 26:22come together for the family meal, sit down at
- 26:23the table. Right. Growing up. If we weren't doing
- 26:26that and the TV wasn't off, then my dad was going
- 26:28to have us. But, you know, now it's like, no,
- 26:32let's actually get everybody in the kitchen and
- 26:34show them like how to prepare that meal. And
- 26:36so I think that's one of my favorite parts about
- 26:38our program is just not only having that aspect,
- 26:42but then equipping those families as well as
- 26:45their children to know, hey, you can do this.
- 26:48We're going to give you all those skills to get
- 26:50in the kitchen and make it happen so you can
- 26:52be a little bit more independent later on in
- 26:54life. And I love that that's family bonding time.
- 26:57You know, a lot of parents might not think, but
- 27:00children will remember things like that. So that's
- 27:04what I love. I only remember my mama saying,
- 27:06get out the kitchen. Get out. But when I was
- 27:11coming up, there was like a home ec and there
- 27:13were programs designed to help get them in the
- 27:17kitchen. But I can imagine today that. there
- 27:22are children that go through our life without
- 27:23being in the kitchen period and so when once
- 27:27they're at an age of accountability and you know
- 27:30taking care of themselves they don't they don't
- 27:31have a clue they got to take all these courses
- 27:34and things just to figure out how to cook but
- 27:36to start at a young age and and encouraging that
- 27:39that's that's powerful it is it is and and we
- 27:43also you know we start teaching kids with our
- 27:46programs generally around fourth or fifth grade
- 27:49and then on up of course but knife skills and
- 27:52getting them in you know we have adaptive tools
- 27:54for kids so we know nobody's taken off any ends
- 27:57of their fingers but to help them learn you know
- 28:00how to chop and how to prepare and cut meats
- 28:03or whatever it may be and utilize laundry yeah
- 28:06and utilizing the different cutting boards you
- 28:09know so there's no cross -contamination and the
- 28:11whole food safety aspect so I feel like we really
- 28:15do try to bring it all together and make it an
- 28:17all encompassing program. And it's just, it's
- 28:20really exciting whenever you can get in and witness
- 28:22it in person and live in action. I love it because
- 28:25I, I, well, I love food. I love cooking, but
- 28:29I also like, I feel like food is a way for me
- 28:33to be innovative. Yeah. Like no recipe. I don't
- 28:37cook by recipes because I like want to throw
- 28:40my own razzle dazzle in it, you know? Oh yeah.
- 28:43are some of the things that extension has coming
- 28:46up that maybe our families should know about
- 28:49and may be able to participate in so the best
- 28:53way to know about this and in your in in anybody's
- 28:58particular county is to contact their local uh
- 29:00extension office um and If you want to contact
- 29:05them, give them a call. But then also most of
- 29:07them have their own Facebook page. And everybody's
- 29:09on social media these days. Oh, really? I didn't
- 29:11know that. Yeah. Even us with the Kentucky Nutrition
- 29:15Education Program, we have a Facebook page as
- 29:17well as an Instagram. And so if you just look
- 29:20up UKKYNEP, you can find us. But then again,
- 29:24whichever county you may reside in. Each county
- 29:27has an extension office, so feel free to reach
- 29:29out. You never know if there's a Master Gardener
- 29:32group going on, if there is a community garden
- 29:36that's happening at the extension office. I mentioned
- 29:38beekeeping. That's also a possibility at the
- 29:41extension office to get involved. And then we
- 29:44had talked about sewing. There's also Master
- 29:46and Junior Sewing Club. So there's all sorts
- 29:48of things to get involved in at the extension
- 29:51office. But then specifically for nutrition education.
- 29:56feel free to, like I said, call or. Get on the
- 29:59Facebook page. But then also we have our extension
- 30:02website to where if somebody wanted to get online
- 30:05and just go to our general extension page and
- 30:07find their county, they can do that as well at
- 30:09University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension.
- 30:12Now you keep saying beekeeping. What you talking
- 30:14about? You're talking about keeping bees on your
- 30:16property? I am talking about that. But then several
- 30:19of our extension offices have beehives there
- 30:23and they'll have a beehive club. And it's just
- 30:26it's really fascinating. Yeah. It's fascinating.
- 30:31I would love. Oh, we'll do a field trip and put
- 30:35you in the suit. Yeah. So you get to be. Yes,
- 30:39for sure. Yeah. Yes. I want to see it on film.
- 30:48Well, we might have to come record. So we're
- 30:51here for it. Yeah. Well, it's been a joy having
- 30:54you on the show. I appreciate it. Give us that.
- 30:58You said reach your your extension office in
- 31:02your county. Yes. So any of your local county
- 31:05extension offices, whether you're in Fayette
- 31:07County, if you're in Harrison County, whichever
- 31:09Lincoln County, whichever one you may be in.
- 31:12They have an extension office and you can reach
- 31:14out, give them a phone call to see what's going
- 31:15on or stop by if you're able to and just see
- 31:18what programs are going on. They usually have
- 31:20all sorts of pamphlets and free giveaways up
- 31:22front that you can take with you. Can they find
- 31:25the information on UK extension? Yes. Okay. Yes.
- 31:29Perfect. Yes. Most certainly. Well, Jen, thank
- 31:32you so, so much for coming and sharing with us.
- 31:36I appreciate it. Thank you. You have been listening
