Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome to Is this a great game or what?
- 0:08Speaker 2: And our special guest today is former Major league pitcher
- 0:12Speaker 2: Kent Merker. Played on the championship team with the Braves
- 0:16Speaker 2: in ninety five, pitched a no hitter, played for Bobby Cox,
- 0:20Speaker 2: played for nine different teams.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Kent, this is my son, Jeff Salo.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Hello, Jeff, Hello Tim. Great to be on man, appreciate
- 0:29Speaker 3: you having me.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, Jeff, I have reconnected with Kent over the years here.
- 0:33Speaker 2: He hadn't played a little while, but the other night
- 0:36Speaker 2: he sent me a text because he listens to the
- 0:38Speaker 2: show and he loves the alphabet that we do, so
- 0:42Speaker 2: at the when it came up to the letter M,
- 0:45Speaker 2: he sends me a text saying, Okay, I know there's
- 0:48Speaker 2: a lot of competition for the M pitcher. You got Messina,
- 0:52Speaker 2: you got Mareschal, you got Maddox, you got Christy Bathison.
- 0:56Speaker 1: And you have Kent Murker.
- 0:58Speaker 2: So I picked Maddox over Mercer, I picked I picked
- 1:03Speaker 2: Maddox over Kent Murker.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Kent, are you still want to do the show?
- 1:09Speaker 3: Dude? I want to know why Jeff's laughing so hard
- 1:11Speaker 3: about that. I mean, come on, dude, if hey without me,
- 1:16Speaker 3: Maddox may not be the pitcher he is or was.
- 1:20Speaker 3: I was a very supportive teammate. We worked on his
- 1:23Speaker 3: change up a lot. You know. I'd go over and
- 1:26Speaker 3: we'd throw, you know, in his driveway because Leo didn't
- 1:29Speaker 3: know what he was doing. So we would go over
- 1:31Speaker 3: and I would help him with a change.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Up, literally in his driveway.
- 1:36Speaker 3: No, I'm kidding. I didn't help Greg Maddicks. I got
- 1:41Speaker 3: him coffee if he asked for That's the only thing
- 1:44Speaker 3: I did to help Greg Maddicks.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Wow, But but Kent, You threw a no hitter and
- 1:50Speaker 2: Greg Maddox didn't.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Isn't that one of.
- 1:52Speaker 2: The beauties of baseball. You had a good career, don't
- 1:55Speaker 2: get me wrong. You won seventy four games whatever it was,
- 1:58Speaker 2: pitched for a million teams.
- 1:59Speaker 1: He did really well. But Maddix ever threw a no
- 2:02Speaker 1: hitter and you did. Isn't that great about baseball?
- 2:06Speaker 3: That's what I love about the game. It's it's not
- 2:09Speaker 3: discriminate towards anyone, right like you look at that rotation
- 2:13Speaker 3: with obviously Avery Maddox, smolt Glave, three Hall of famers,
- 2:19Speaker 3: and I was the only one to throw a no hitter,
- 2:21Speaker 3: which it just doesn't make sense, but I'll tell you
- 2:24Speaker 3: a funny story about that if you want to hear it. So, yes,
- 2:27Speaker 3: I throw that Dodger Stadium April eighth, So it was
- 2:31Speaker 3: my first start out of spring training. I ended up
- 2:33Speaker 3: throwing one hundred and thirty one pitches, which would not
- 2:36Speaker 3: even wouldn't happen today because the pitch counts and all that.
- 2:40Speaker 3: But all the hooplaus over I do all my interviews,
- 2:44Speaker 3: Bobby calls me in that little office in Dodger Stadium. Tim,
- 2:47Speaker 3: I'm sure you've seen it. Yeah, he goes, great game, kid.
- 2:53Speaker 3: He goes, listen, we got an off day Monday, right,
- 2:57Speaker 3: He goes, we're going to skip you. We're gonna skip
- 2:59Speaker 3: your next start so we can keep the other four
- 3:01Speaker 3: guys on their normal day. And I'm like, I said, yes, sir,
- 3:06Speaker 3: and I walk out going. Man, I throw a no hitter,
- 3:08Speaker 3: and I'm not even getting to make my next start
- 3:11Speaker 3: because the other guys were that much better, and I'm
- 3:14Speaker 3: probably the only guy to throw a no no and
- 3:16Speaker 3: then not make their next start. I had to wait
- 3:17Speaker 3: like ten days to pitch again. But you know what
- 3:22Speaker 3: I understood.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Why?
- 3:23Speaker 2: Yeah, So Jeff I was at Kent Murker's no hitter.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I was at Sports Illustrated.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I wasn't there for any particular reason, just checking up
- 3:33Speaker 2: on some teams and Kent Murker threw a no hitter
- 3:36Speaker 2: when I was at the game, and I talked to
- 3:39Speaker 2: him the next day and I said, so, how are
- 3:41Speaker 2: you feeling today?
- 3:42Speaker 1: And he told me back when CNN had like headline news,
- 3:46Speaker 1: where the same thing would run, like the same stuff
- 3:49Speaker 1: would run every twenty minutes.
- 3:51Speaker 2: He likes stayed up all night watching the sports. Yeah,
- 3:54Speaker 2: because he was a highlight. Can't you remember that, right? Uh?
- 3:59Speaker 3: Oh absolutely? And it just like you said, it just rolled,
- 4:03Speaker 3: it rolled, And I'm like, you know what, that may
- 4:05Speaker 3: be the best game of my life. I'm going to
- 4:07Speaker 3: watch as much as this as I can. And you
- 4:10Speaker 3: know what was cool too, is is I was always
- 4:12Speaker 3: a get up early guy. And so it was probably
- 4:15Speaker 3: six in the morning, you know, I'm watching the news,
- 4:18Speaker 3: but I go to get a coffee somewhere, and I
- 4:20Speaker 3: remember they had the old paper machines, newspaper machines like
- 4:23Speaker 3: on the yes where you put a corner fifty cents in. Dude,
- 4:26Speaker 3: I'm walking down the street in the front page. There
- 4:29Speaker 3: I am and I'm like, dude, this is cool. I
- 4:31Speaker 3: probably spent forty dollars. I went and got like two
- 4:34Speaker 3: rolls of quarters and bought every newspaper I could find
- 4:37Speaker 3: down And by the way, it's the worst city to
- 4:41Speaker 3: throw a no hitter if you want to go out
- 4:42Speaker 3: and have a beer afterwards, because it's just all clubs
- 4:45Speaker 3: down there. So I just went back to my room
- 4:49Speaker 3: and no one texted me because we didn't have cell
- 4:50Speaker 3: phones yet. Like, it was just it was awesome though.
- 4:54Speaker 3: And what the best part of that for me was
- 4:58Speaker 3: someone sent me a tape and it was obviously TBS's
- 5:03Speaker 3: video and they dubbed it to Vin Scully's audio. And
- 5:09Speaker 3: I'm like, I felt fortunate one to pitch there, but
- 5:12Speaker 3: to have Vin Scully call that game, who I think
- 5:14Speaker 3: is one of the best that ever lived, if not
- 5:17Speaker 3: the best. But it was just kind of cool. Oh
- 5:19Speaker 3: that is but I missed. Yeah, and Bobby bench me.
- 5:23Speaker 3: He benched me because I wasn't.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I don't know now, Ken.
- 5:29Speaker 4: First of all, the Bobby Cox is like one of
- 5:32Speaker 4: our favorites of all time on this podcast. Anytime we
- 5:36Speaker 4: have a chance to get a Bobby Cox story, obviously,
- 5:38Speaker 4: you just opened up with that one.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Do you have any other Bobby.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Cox stories you can share with us because we just
- 5:46Speaker 4: love him so much, his character, legendary manager. What do
- 5:50Speaker 4: you want to share?
- 5:51Speaker 3: You know what? Like Bobby was very simple. He had
- 5:54Speaker 3: three rules, show up early, play the game the right way,
- 5:59Speaker 3: and don't embarrass the team right. It was pretty simple,
- 6:02Speaker 3: and it didn't matter if you were me or if
- 6:04Speaker 3: Maddox or if it was David Justice or Fred McGriff
- 6:07Speaker 3: all had the same rules. But the one time, I'll
- 6:11Speaker 3: never forget it. I was closing at the time. This
- 6:13Speaker 3: was in the early nineties, and we had a one
- 6:16Speaker 3: run lead, two run lead, and I come in and
- 6:19Speaker 3: of course I get in trouble like I did a lot.
- 6:21Speaker 3: And by the way, Bobby called me a top step.
- 6:24Speaker 3: He goes, You're a top step, top flight reliever, and
- 6:29Speaker 3: I'm like, okay, thanks, he goes, because every time I
- 6:31Speaker 3: took you and I was on that top step waiting
- 6:33Speaker 3: to come and get you out, and I'm like Jesus, Bobby.
- 6:38Speaker 3: But I get into I get into a situation where
- 6:42Speaker 3: again two run lead, I come in to pitch the ninth,
- 6:45Speaker 3: I get in a little trouble. I've got second, third,
- 6:49Speaker 3: two outs, ground ball to first. I don't cover first.
- 6:53Speaker 3: I'm late. I'm just like, oh my god, anyway, run scores. Now,
- 6:56Speaker 3: I got first and third. I strike the next guy out.
- 6:59Speaker 3: We win the game, and he goes, hey, when we're
- 7:02Speaker 3: doing the celebrations going through the line into the dugout,
- 7:05Speaker 3: he goes, hey, I want to see in my office
- 7:07Speaker 3: for a minute. And I'm thinking I'm going get the
- 7:09Speaker 3: closers job, like that's what he's getting ready to tell me.
- 7:13Speaker 3: And he calls me in and he takes his glasses
- 7:16Speaker 3: off and he just stares at me. I'm sitting across
- 7:20Speaker 3: his desk. He just stares at me, and it felt
- 7:22Speaker 3: like an hour and it was probably ten seconds, and
- 7:25Speaker 3: he goes, you can't cover first. I'm like, yeah, I know.
- 7:28Speaker 3: He goes, That's not how we play baseball in Atlanta.
- 7:31Speaker 3: I'm like, I'm sorry, skip, like it'll never happen again,
- 7:35Speaker 3: and he's like okay, and then he's like, dude, great
- 7:37Speaker 3: punch out. At the end, that slider was net like
- 7:40Speaker 3: complimenting me. And I covered first on fly balls to
- 7:44Speaker 3: left field after that, anywhere the ball was hit, I
- 7:49Speaker 3: was covering first base on a strikeout, I was like
- 7:53Speaker 3: I'm never gonna just because you know what, Bobby had
- 7:56Speaker 3: this aura about him. He defended his player better than
- 8:01Speaker 3: any manager I've ever played for. And that's not a
- 8:03Speaker 3: slide on any other manager. But you didn't want to
- 8:05Speaker 3: disappoint Bobby. You know. It was like he was your grandfather,
- 8:10Speaker 3: and like you make your dad mad every now and then,
- 8:13Speaker 3: but you don't want to disappoint grandpa. And and he
- 8:16Speaker 3: was simple, but that's why he was so good because
- 8:20Speaker 3: players would do anything for that man. And God rest
- 8:24Speaker 3: his soul, obviously, but you knew what you got. He's
- 8:27Speaker 3: going to give you every opportunity. And that was it.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Do you know the jeff frank Hoor Tiger Woods golf
- 8:37Speaker 2: story that Jeffrey was talking about is does that not
- 8:41Speaker 2: sum up who Bobby Cox was as a manager better
- 8:45Speaker 2: than any story.
- 8:48Speaker 3: It's it's epitomizes who Bobby was. And you know, Bobby
- 8:52Speaker 3: was really good at this too. Like even when I
- 8:55Speaker 3: was a rookie or my second year, like I'm a nobody,
- 8:58Speaker 3: he would come over and make the time to go, Hey,
- 9:00Speaker 3: how's Julie my wife? How's Maddie. Mattie's your oldest right, Yeah,
- 9:03Speaker 3: how's she? Doing like he made everything personal and he
- 9:08Speaker 3: knew everything about everybody and you felt and he also
- 9:13Speaker 3: made you feel like you were the best player on
- 9:14Speaker 3: the planet when you were actually playing. He just had
- 9:17Speaker 3: a way of getting the best and personalizing stuff, and
- 9:22Speaker 3: you felt like you were part of this whole thing, right.
- 9:25Speaker 3: You weren't just someone that if you had two bad
- 9:28Speaker 3: games in a row, he'd come over and show you
- 9:31Speaker 3: more love like. That's what was great about him. And
- 9:34Speaker 3: the Frank Core story is epitomizes him. It really does, Jeff.
- 9:40Speaker 2: We have to tell it real quickly for our listeners
- 9:43Speaker 2: who haven't heard it before.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I'll make it fast here.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Frank Core is twenty two years old, it's spring training.
- 9:49Speaker 2: He's got a chance to play with Tiger. Bobby goes
- 9:51Speaker 2: to him before the game and says, I understand spring
- 9:54Speaker 2: training game. I understand you have a chance to play
- 9:56Speaker 2: with Tiger today, and Frank Corr goes, yes, I do,
- 9:59Speaker 2: but I'm not playing and I'm staying here. Bobby says,
- 10:01Speaker 2: I got a deal. You go playing bradon Ton in
- 10:04Speaker 2: three days. Everyone hates going there. He said, if you
- 10:07Speaker 2: do that, I will get you off the field after
- 10:11Speaker 2: one at bat and get you onto the golf course.
- 10:13Speaker 2: So he said, after you your first at bat, pretend
- 10:17Speaker 2: as you run through first base that you tweaked your
- 10:20Speaker 2: ankle or something, and I'll get you out of the gate.
- 10:23Speaker 2: So that's exactly what Frank Corer did. He plays twenty
- 10:26Speaker 2: seven with Tiger and Frank Korr's wife calls him at
- 10:30Speaker 2: four thirty in the afternoon and says, you're on the
- 10:33Speaker 2: wire that you have.
- 10:34Speaker 1: A high ankle spray when he.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Was never hurt in the first place. Bobby set it up.
- 10:41Speaker 2: But yep, you're right. It personifies who Bobby is because
- 10:46Speaker 2: if he did that for me, I would run through
- 10:48Speaker 2: a wall for him for the rest of my life.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Agreed, Yes, And that's and that's exactly. And by the way,
- 10:54Speaker 3: he wasn't doing that, so Frank Coorr would eventually run
- 10:58Speaker 3: through a wall. It's just who Bobby was, right. You know.
- 11:01Speaker 3: When I got called up, I got called up, he
- 11:03Speaker 3: told me. He goes, listen, I was a starter of
- 11:06Speaker 3: my whole life. I got called up as and they
- 11:08Speaker 3: put me in the bullpen. He goes, listen, you're the
- 11:11Speaker 3: best week option we have, right, and he goes, you're
- 11:14Speaker 3: going to get a chance to fail up here, which
- 11:17Speaker 3: immediately is like what, like, it's not. It made me
- 11:22Speaker 3: feel more comfortable. Like, listen, if you come in tonight
- 11:25Speaker 3: and you don't get the job done, you're going to
- 11:26Speaker 3: get the ball tomorrow. If you do again, you're going
- 11:29Speaker 3: to get the ball the next day. Now, eventually you
- 11:31Speaker 3: got to do your job. But it just put me
- 11:33Speaker 3: at ease, and every player he's played for puts them
- 11:36Speaker 3: at ease. Like it's tough enough to pitch in the
- 11:39Speaker 3: big leagues, but if you know you're allowed to fail
- 11:43Speaker 3: every now and then and you're going to get more opportunities,
- 11:46Speaker 3: you end up pitching better and you fail less. And
- 11:49Speaker 3: it was just his way of doing it. And again
- 11:52Speaker 3: it goes back to like I don't want to disappoint it,
- 11:55Speaker 3: you know. And we talked before we got on that
- 11:58Speaker 3: I was early to this call. I'm like, Bobby, don't
- 12:00Speaker 3: be late. Taught all of us don't be late. You
- 12:04Speaker 3: know the old saying if you're not fifteen minutes earlier
- 12:07Speaker 3: or late. And it's just I've held down. And he
- 12:11Speaker 3: just was such a steward of teaching baseball and the
- 12:14Speaker 3: right way to play it, and as good as he
- 12:17Speaker 3: was and is accomplished. He's in the Hall of Fame.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Obviously it won't. None of that does justices of how
- 12:25Speaker 3: many players he truly affected in a possible way.
- 12:29Speaker 5: People dehydration sucks, Quints electrolyte stick packs to the rescue.
- 12:35Speaker 5: I order them, I use them all of the.
- 12:37Speaker 6: Time, somebody who may or may not have had some
- 12:40Speaker 6: adult beverages in their life. The next day, you know
- 12:42Speaker 6: what flavor? I like watermelon, and I don't like watermelon.
- 12:46Speaker 6: I'll go raspberry and it helps me to get my
- 12:49Speaker 6: citrus salt in. But if I do, it helps me
- 12:52Speaker 6: to get back to normal, feeling good and ready to
- 12:54Speaker 6: go the next day.
- 12:55Speaker 5: Yep, tough workout or dry them out in the morning.
- 12:57Speaker 5: Whatever it is, this is going to help you out.

- 13:28Speaker 5: or prevent any disease.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Back to your no hitter, by the way, you you
- 13:37Speaker 2: had a combined no hitter also September eleventh, nineteen ninety one,
- 13:42Speaker 2: Wohlers and Alejandro.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Pain you followed, tell us what happened on the combined
- 13:47Speaker 1: no hitter.
- 13:49Speaker 3: So I was in the bullpen and all year and
- 13:54Speaker 3: maybe got to forty five fifty pitches is the most
- 13:57Speaker 3: I probably ever threw coming out of the bullpen. And
- 14:00Speaker 3: I show up to the field that day and Leo
- 14:05Speaker 3: Mazzoni comes over and he goes, hey, And I think
- 14:09Speaker 3: it was Mike by Lecky was supposed to start, and
- 14:13Speaker 3: he goes he's got something with his back or his
- 14:15Speaker 3: lat or something. He doesn't know if he's going to
- 14:18Speaker 3: be able to pitch. It might have been Charlie Lee Brandt.
- 14:21Speaker 3: I'm sorry, I'm old and I forget stuff. But anyway,
- 14:24Speaker 3: whoever was supposed to start said he just so I
- 14:29Speaker 3: went down as he warmed up. He threw like ten
- 14:31Speaker 3: pitches and he said, I can't go. So I got
- 14:35Speaker 3: the spot start and I end up it was against
- 14:38Speaker 3: San Diego, and I end up going six innings no hit.
- 14:43Speaker 3: I got to like seventy four or five pitches, and
- 14:47Speaker 3: I come in after the sixth and Bobby just says, hey, listen,
- 14:50Speaker 3: I know you got to no hit or going, but
- 14:52Speaker 3: I don't want to hurt you. You're not built up
- 14:54Speaker 3: to do this arm strength wise. And I'm like, it'sbby, okay,
- 15:00Speaker 3: you got it skip. And then Wohlers comes in pitches too.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Painia gets to save. By the way, Painte had no idea.
- 15:07Speaker 3: He threw the ball from the last out to a
- 15:09Speaker 3: fan and everyone's going, what are you doing, dude, Like
- 15:13Speaker 3: that's a no hitter. It's the first combined no hitter
- 15:16Speaker 3: in National League history. And he's like ed it in
- 15:19Speaker 3: Spanish but he said something like oh me mallow, and
- 15:23Speaker 3: I'm like whatever, but yeah, that's how that's that's how
- 15:27Speaker 3: it happened. And then, as fate would have it, two
- 15:31Speaker 3: years ago or two years later in San Diego, same thing. Hey,
- 15:38Speaker 3: so and so is supposed to start today. I don't
- 15:40Speaker 3: know if he can start, And this was in ninety three,
- 15:44Speaker 3: and I go down waiting to see I was a
- 15:47Speaker 3: caddie for all these guys apparently, and he can't go.
- 15:51Speaker 3: So I start that game and goes six no hitting
- 15:54Speaker 3: and then Wollers comes in gives up a hit in
- 15:56Speaker 3: the seventh, I believe, so he takes me out because
- 16:00Speaker 3: he's the same thing. Dude, you're not built up for this.
- 16:03Speaker 3: So I went six no hit in that game. So
- 16:05Speaker 3: then ninety four I was He told me on a
- 16:09Speaker 3: spring training you're a starter. And in ninety four when
- 16:12Speaker 3: I actually threw my no hitter, obviously went six no hit.
- 16:17Speaker 3: I went in thinking, all right, I'm done again. This
- 16:19Speaker 3: is Bobby's thing. He's going to pull me after six
- 16:21Speaker 3: no hit innings. Every time I go out there. He
- 16:24Speaker 3: didn't say a word. He didn't say a word, and
- 16:27Speaker 3: I ended up finishing it and he was like, dude,
- 16:30Speaker 3: I wasn't going to take you out again. So but yeah,
- 16:33Speaker 3: it was it was just luck can't right.
- 16:35Speaker 4: I was always so curious when when you're in that
- 16:38Speaker 4: position as a reliever, who's getting spot starts, and both
- 16:41Speaker 4: of those seemed extremely last minute. Are you running into
- 16:45Speaker 4: the clubhouse early nineties, different time calling your wife and saying, hey,
- 16:50Speaker 4: I'm about to go start get to the ballpark if
- 16:52Speaker 4: you're not here yet, right like or because with that position,
- 16:55Speaker 4: it's different when you're an everyday starter, which you had
- 16:58Speaker 4: the opportunity to.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Be as well.
- 17:00Speaker 4: The family knows, Okay, it's it's what day we're doing,
- 17:02Speaker 4: unless you get skipped by lobby cocks. But are you
- 17:05Speaker 4: calling in the clubhouse? Hey, hey, make sure you get
- 17:08Speaker 4: to the ballpark because I have starting the dude, I.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Didn't have a quarter for the pay phone because there
- 17:13Speaker 3: were no cell phones, got me body and my wife
- 17:18Speaker 3: at the time probably wouldn't have answered if I did call,
- 17:20Speaker 3: So we're not even gonna have that discussion. But no,
- 17:24Speaker 3: she was there. That's that's I was still early enough
- 17:27Speaker 3: in my career where the family came to every game, right,
- 17:32Speaker 3: whether I got in or I didn't, they were there.
- 17:34Speaker 3: It was it was all part of the excitement of
- 17:36Speaker 3: being in the big league. So yeah, but it was
- 17:39Speaker 3: that was a fun night, It really was. And again
- 17:43Speaker 3: I gave Bobby. I told Leo, like, really, you pulled
- 17:47Speaker 3: me with two no hitters, now, like this is a joke,
- 17:49Speaker 3: like joking with me, So then in ninety four, I
- 17:53Speaker 3: go in and I look at him and he just
- 17:54Speaker 3: turns his head the other way, like I'm not even
- 17:56Speaker 3: gonna say a word to him, and he and he
- 17:59Speaker 3: tells us story. By the way, Leo tells the story,
- 18:02Speaker 3: and I don't believe it, but he said I came
- 18:05Speaker 3: in after six and told him I was tired and
- 18:07Speaker 3: I'm done, which I never would have said in my life.
- 18:11Speaker 3: But he tells that story, and I still to this day,
- 18:14Speaker 3: I'm like, dude, you're making me look bad man like
- 18:17Speaker 3: coming out with a no hitter. And he's like, oh,
- 18:20Speaker 3: I remember you. And I'm like, okay, we'll agree to
- 18:23Speaker 3: disagree on this story. But anyway, it was funny. You know,
- 18:27Speaker 3: the best part of my the best part of my
- 18:30Speaker 3: no hitter when I watched it the replay, is to
- 18:33Speaker 3: see Smolcy and Avery and Maddox how excited they were
- 18:38Speaker 3: for me. They were the first ones out, Like it
- 18:42Speaker 3: was awesome. Man. Bobby created such a great chemistry within
- 18:46Speaker 3: the clubhouse that everyone no one was jealous that I
- 18:50Speaker 3: threw the no hitter. They were couldn't have been more
- 18:52Speaker 3: excited for me. And that's that. That was what was
- 18:56Speaker 3: cool to me. Three eventual Hall of Famers were excited
- 19:00Speaker 3: for me. It was great.
- 19:03Speaker 2: All right, we'll get to the three Hall of Famers
- 19:05Speaker 2: in a minute, Ken, But Jeff, you know how much
- 19:07Speaker 2: I love bizarre, quirky, arcane statistics. Yesterday Kent Merker told
- 19:12Speaker 2: me that he was told he's the only pitcher ever
- 19:16Speaker 2: to throw a no hitter, be a part of a
- 19:18Speaker 2: combined no hitter, and during his career hit a grand slam.
- 19:23Speaker 2: So I checked it out personally this morning at about
- 19:26Speaker 2: four o'clock in the.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Morning, and it's true.
- 19:29Speaker 2: So, Ken, what isn't like to be a part of
- 19:34Speaker 2: that triumphant there no hitter, combined no hitter and you
- 19:38Speaker 2: hit a grand slam.
- 19:40Speaker 3: Dude, I never would have thought about a buddy of mine.
- 19:42Speaker 3: I've still got moronic buddies like me that just come
- 19:46Speaker 3: up and now that AI and all that chat GPT
- 19:49Speaker 3: that you can look up anything. They just randomly sent
- 19:52Speaker 3: me that, and I'm like, ah, no big deal. But
- 19:55Speaker 3: of course I copied it and sent it to all
- 19:57Speaker 3: my girls to say, your dad is way cool, older
- 20:00Speaker 3: than you think he is, Like look at this. But
- 20:04Speaker 3: I had no idea, you know, Like I know, Bob
- 20:06Speaker 3: Gibson probably had a grand slam. I know, he probably
- 20:09Speaker 3: threw a no hitter, right Like. I'm like, I don't
- 20:11Speaker 3: even know if that's the thing. And by the way,
- 20:15Speaker 3: if you add from Dublin, Ohio, I definitely would be
- 20:18Speaker 3: the only pitcher with those other three criteria. But yeah,
- 20:23Speaker 3: he sent me that, and I'm like, dude, you know what,
- 20:25Speaker 3: that's actually kind of cool, right like, And I wasn't
- 20:28Speaker 3: playing the game for myself. It wasn't about individual achievements.
- 20:32Speaker 3: It was about obviously gett into a World series and
- 20:35Speaker 3: winning a World Series, which we did lost to which
- 20:39Speaker 3: God that ninety one World Series, by the way, was awesome.
- 20:41Speaker 3: But yeah, I had no idea. And I'm like, girls,
- 20:46Speaker 3: look at this. You think I'm the old guy with
- 20:48Speaker 3: the gray beard. Look what your dad did fifty eight
- 20:51Speaker 3: years ago, you know what I mean. And they actually
- 20:54Speaker 3: thought it was cool, Like Dad, that's cool. Hey, can
- 20:57Speaker 3: I borrow a hundred bucks? That's the following And I'm like.
- 21:01Speaker 4: You know, my sister, my sister used to call my
- 21:04Speaker 4: dad the ATM with nosehair sneaker.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Oh my god, that's hilarious.
- 21:12Speaker 1: He knows a little bit about that.
- 21:15Speaker 2: It happened, So can you hit one home run in
- 21:18Speaker 2: your career and it was a grand Slam. Tell us
- 21:21Speaker 2: about that. I looked it up, I found it. Tell
- 21:24Speaker 2: us what happened that day.
- 21:27Speaker 3: So I'll send you the video if you want it.
- 21:28Speaker 3: But yes, I so. Here's Jeff and Tim. Here's the
- 21:36Speaker 3: best part of that story. This is just like getting
- 21:38Speaker 3: skipped in the rotation after a no hitter. So we're
- 21:41Speaker 3: in Miami. We're obviously playing the Marlins. So Jesu Sanchez
- 21:46Speaker 3: is a little lefty thrown like ninety five. I closed
- 21:50Speaker 3: my eyes at the right time, it hit the barrel
- 21:53Speaker 3: and hit a home run. And Mark McGuire was on
- 21:57Speaker 3: that team that was in Mark McGuire happened to hit
- 22:03Speaker 3: two that night and beat Hack Wilson's National League record
- 22:09Speaker 3: of fifty eight home runs. That got Big Mac to
- 22:11Speaker 3: fifty nine. I went seven. I think I gave up
- 22:15Speaker 3: one run. Kot Say hit a solo shot off me,
- 22:20Speaker 3: and I hit my grand slam, and Big Mac hits two.
- 22:23Speaker 3: So he's now the all time National League hadn't caught
- 22:27Speaker 3: marriage yet, but he's the all time National League home
- 22:30Speaker 3: run lead single season. So after the game, the kid
- 22:35Speaker 3: that caught my ball comes into the tunnel and they're like, hey,
- 22:41Speaker 3: the kids outside, he's got your ball, you know. And
- 22:43Speaker 3: normally if you do anything like that, like someone wants
- 22:47Speaker 3: to trade off, like you sign a sign a ball
- 22:49Speaker 3: for him, or sign a bat or whatever. So the
- 22:52Speaker 3: kid goes out there is with his dad, and I
- 22:54Speaker 3: go out and I'm like, oh, man, booty, and I
- 22:56Speaker 3: go what can I do for you? And he goes,
- 23:00Speaker 3: can you get me Mark McGuire's autograph? And I was like,
- 23:06Speaker 3: so I'm sitting there. I'm like yeah, So instead of
- 23:09Speaker 3: just going in and getting it, I said, you know what,
- 23:12Speaker 3: come with me. So I bring him and his dad
- 23:14Speaker 3: into the clubhouse. Mark's over there in his locker with
- 23:16Speaker 3: his beastly forearms in his underwear, and I walk him
- 23:21Speaker 3: and his dad over and I said, hey, Mac, I
- 23:23Speaker 3: want my grand Slam ball, but you've got to sign
- 23:27Speaker 3: something because the kid doesn't want my autograph, he wants your.
- 23:29Speaker 3: So Mark signed a bat for him. Mark signed a
- 23:33Speaker 3: bat for him, and but the paper the next day
- 23:38Speaker 3: wasn't tent Murker pitched seven to one run Gotta win.
- 23:42Speaker 3: It was Mark McGuire breaks Pack Wilson's National League record.
- 23:47Speaker 3: And then at the very end of the article right
- 23:49Speaker 3: down there at the bottom. Oh, by the way, Kemp
- 23:51Speaker 3: Merker hit his first career home run, Grand Slam and
- 23:54Speaker 3: pitch seven innings. It was like, what do I gotta
- 23:59Speaker 3: do to get any recognition this year? Right, so, Ken,
- 24:03Speaker 3: which which made me think maybe I should streak during
- 24:05Speaker 3: the seventh any one game? That would definitely mean.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Ken, Uh, Derek Jeter hit one Grand Slam in his career.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Pete Rose hit one Grand Slam. You have as many
- 24:19Speaker 2: career Grand Slams as Pete Rose and Derek Jeter. Does
- 24:24Speaker 2: that make you feel a little better?
- 24:27Speaker 3: That's why I should have moved up on your end list,
- 24:29Speaker 3: tim as the best pitchers. It's a pitching just isn't
- 24:33Speaker 3: It's also includes offense. Matis doesn't have a great Christy.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Doesn't have a no hitter. He doesn't have a no
- 24:42Speaker 2: hitter either, or a Grand Slam or a goodbye no hitter.
- 24:46Speaker 2: But no, all right, let's let's get to him for
- 24:49Speaker 2: reels here.
- 24:50Speaker 3: But but but but Maddix has two hundred and eighty
- 24:52Speaker 3: more wins than I do, so that probably figured into
- 24:55Speaker 3: your calculus, right.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, so, Ken, Seriously, we'll get to Maddox, the crazy,
- 25:07Speaker 2: bad in a minute, But tell me what it was
- 25:10Speaker 2: like to watch him pitch in his prime.
- 25:15Speaker 3: It was amazing, Like, and you know this guy's nowadays
- 25:20Speaker 3: like velocity is just it's the Holy Grail, right, Like
- 25:24Speaker 3: if you throw hard, you're gonna get opportunities. I would
- 25:27Speaker 3: watch Greg Maddox dominate for nine innings and nothing flashy, right,
- 25:36Speaker 3: There was no ooh ah like there were no nothing
- 25:39Speaker 3: that you look up and see a radar gun and
- 25:41Speaker 3: go wow. I remember charting a game when but when,
- 25:46Speaker 3: back when we were with Atlanta, if you were starting
- 25:48Speaker 3: the night after you went in, Bobby, let us stay
- 25:51Speaker 3: in the clubhouse to watch it on television so we
- 25:53Speaker 3: could chart the game. You know, you kept ball strikes,
- 25:57Speaker 3: foul balls, like you kept everything what the pitch was.
- 26:00Speaker 3: And it was supposed to help us like game plan
- 26:03Speaker 3: for when we were going to pitch against that team
- 26:05Speaker 3: the next day. So I watched and this was in
- 26:08Speaker 3: ninety man might have been ninety four, ninety five, and
- 26:13Speaker 3: it was the Giants. Maddox was pitching in Atlanta August hot,
- 26:19Speaker 3: you know, Atlanta and August, and I'm up there charting
- 26:23Speaker 3: and the game's over and this is the Barry Bonds JT.
- 26:27Speaker 3: Snow Rich Aurelia, Jeff Kent, like, this is a really
- 26:31Speaker 3: good Giants lineup. He throws a shut out. I think
- 26:36Speaker 3: he gave up three hits, maybe four, walk none like always,
- 26:40Speaker 3: and struck out like maybe five. So I'm total in
- 26:43Speaker 3: the pitches and you know, that's what I gotta do.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Eighty four total pitches. And I'm like, oh, man, I
- 26:51Speaker 3: missed an Innie right, Like I must have got up
- 26:54Speaker 3: to get a hot dog or I had to miss
- 26:57Speaker 3: an Anie. There's no way. And I look back and
- 27:00Speaker 3: I'm panicking, going, oh my god, Leo is going to
- 27:02Speaker 3: be pissed because I didn't get this right. No, I
- 27:05Speaker 3: got it right. And the craziest thing about it, guys,
- 27:09Speaker 3: he threw eighty four pitches in a complete game and
- 27:12Speaker 3: threw seventy two strikes. He threw twelve ball in a
- 27:17Speaker 3: nine inning game against a really, really, really good lineup.
- 27:22Speaker 3: And the best part of the story I'm going to
- 27:24Speaker 3: add to it. I see him after the game. He's
- 27:26Speaker 3: over in his locker doing his interviews and I'm in
- 27:29Speaker 3: my locker and he gets done. He takes his uniform off,
- 27:34Speaker 3: throws it in the bin, and immediately puts his dress
- 27:37Speaker 3: clothes on, or his clothes he wore of the park
- 27:39Speaker 3: didn't shower, and I'm like, okay, I got to give
- 27:43Speaker 3: him some crap about this. I go, bro, like, really,
- 27:46Speaker 3: you're not going to shower. He goes, dude, I didn't
- 27:48Speaker 3: even sweat tonight. And he goes and I'm playing and
- 27:51Speaker 3: he goes and I'm playing golf in the morning, so
- 27:53Speaker 3: why would I shower? Now, go golf and sweat and
- 27:56Speaker 3: then shower again. So he literally just put his street
- 27:59Speaker 3: clothes on and left, and I just looked at him, like, dude,
- 28:03Speaker 3: I am never going to be one as cool as
- 28:06Speaker 3: Greg Mannix and I have no chance playing this game
- 28:08Speaker 3: if that's how. But it was hilarious. He literally did.
- 28:11Speaker 3: He did like a sniff test. He was like, I'm
- 28:15Speaker 3: good and just put his golf shirt on and he's like,
- 28:18Speaker 3: I'm playing golf in the morning, dude, I'll shower after golf.
- 28:21Speaker 3: And I'm like, all right. He was dead. He's I
- 28:26Speaker 3: could tell you a thousand Mattocks stories. That just why
- 28:29Speaker 3: you knew he was the best at his job, because
- 28:34Speaker 3: he I know you've seen the Chipper story. I was
- 28:37Speaker 3: there when he told Bobby he was going to get
- 28:40Speaker 3: the guy to pop up in foul territory at third
- 28:43Speaker 3: base or the base open. You've heard all those, but yes,
- 28:47Speaker 3: he told me one time we were sitting in the dugout.
- 28:49Speaker 3: He wasn't glad was pitching. And this was back when
- 28:53Speaker 3: sometimes you had back to back starts against the same team.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Just based on the schedule. We're facing the Cubs. He
- 29:00Speaker 3: just taps me. When this hitter comes up. He goes
- 29:02Speaker 3: watch this, and I'm like what. He goes Their first
- 29:05Speaker 3: base coach may go to the hospital after this a battle,
- 29:09Speaker 3: and I'm like, what, I'm not on my kids' lives.
- 29:14Speaker 3: The third or fourth pitch, this hitter hits a foul
- 29:17Speaker 3: ball and it hits whoever. The first base coach was
- 29:20Speaker 3: right in the chest. He goes down but gets back up.
- 29:25Speaker 3: He was fine, and I just looked at him and
- 29:27Speaker 3: I walked away. I'm like, I didn't even want to
- 29:29Speaker 3: be around you. You're like, you scare me now. So
- 29:32Speaker 3: then he explains to me the game. He's like, listen,
- 29:35Speaker 3: this is how we approached this guy. We pitched him
- 29:38Speaker 3: in the whole last series. That was the book on him.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Fastballs in fastballs in fastballs in glave. Obviously, had a
- 29:45Speaker 3: really good change up. He goes, he's going to be
- 29:47Speaker 3: looking for the fastball in he's going to open early.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Glad's going to throw the change up away. The only
- 29:54Speaker 3: place he can hit it is foul towards first base,
- 29:58Speaker 3: and sure enough he did it. And I was like, dude,
- 30:01Speaker 3: how do you how do you even see these things?
- 30:04Speaker 3: And it was just I always tell people I was
- 30:09Speaker 3: never the smartest guy in the clubhouse, but I made
- 30:11Speaker 3: sure to sit next to Greg Maddis and just listen
- 30:14Speaker 3: to him because that's how much he knew about pitching. Dad,
- 30:17Speaker 3: you know how you're.
- 30:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I was gonna say, if I may can pitch
- 30:22Speaker 4: seventeen years in the majors and he's sitting next to
- 30:26Speaker 4: somebody and you just said.
- 30:29Speaker 1: I can't even be a part of this game.
- 30:32Speaker 4: So if a major league pitcher is sitting next to
- 30:35Speaker 4: another pitcher saying, I don't even I can't even understand
- 30:38Speaker 4: what he's thinking, what do you think, Dad, even though
- 30:40Speaker 4: you've covered this game your whole life and I love
- 30:42Speaker 4: this game, we don't.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Even know anything about it. If that's what Maddox is.
- 30:47Speaker 4: Doing, it's incredible.
- 30:49Speaker 1: It's incredible testament.
- 30:51Speaker 2: This is why when it comes to career value, he
- 30:55Speaker 2: might be the greatest pitcher that we've seen in our
- 30:59Speaker 2: lifetime career value given and Kent. As you may know,
- 31:03Speaker 2: Maddox had nine hundred and ninety nine career walks with
- 31:08Speaker 2: three starts to go because he knew he was retiring
- 31:11Speaker 2: at the end of the season that season and he
- 31:14Speaker 2: didn't walk anyone his last three starts because there's no
- 31:18Speaker 2: way in the world that he was going to have
- 31:20Speaker 2: a thousand walks in his group, even though he pitched
- 31:24Speaker 2: well over five thousand innings.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Does that sound like him one hundred percent? I mean,
- 31:31Speaker 3: the guy was off the charts. Another thing about mad Dog,
- 31:35Speaker 3: which I think is really cool, like if you look
- 31:37Speaker 3: at his you know this was I work with players
- 31:40Speaker 3: now as an agent, and you know this was three
- 31:43Speaker 3: or four years ago. There were two guys in all
- 31:46Speaker 3: Major League Baseball that had two hundred innings, right, and
- 31:50Speaker 3: they're like, oh, these guys are workhorses at which they
- 31:53Speaker 3: are in today's game, right, Like it's not their fault
- 31:56Speaker 3: they're being taken out. But Maddox had a streak of
- 32:00Speaker 3: get how many years in a row where he threw
- 32:03Speaker 3: at least two hundred innings it was like eighteen years
- 32:07Speaker 3: or seventeen years in a row, and then one year
- 32:11Speaker 3: he pitched like one hundred and ninety nine and a
- 32:14Speaker 3: third And it was late in the year. Obviously, Bobby
- 32:19Speaker 3: was trying to set up the rotation and get bullpen
- 32:21Speaker 3: work before the playoffs. So he goes to Maddox after
- 32:25Speaker 3: five scoreless and he goes, hey, I'm gonna get I
- 32:28Speaker 3: need the bullpen. So and so needs an inning, and
- 32:31Speaker 3: so and so needs and inning. He's like, yeah, fine,
- 32:34Speaker 3: but it would have been like twenty basically every year
- 32:36Speaker 3: he pitched where he got to two hundred innings. But
- 32:40Speaker 3: mad Dog didn't care about that stuff. He could care less.
- 32:44Speaker 3: But he's, dude, I can't. I could you know how
- 32:48Speaker 3: you have your hat that has the little holes in
- 32:50Speaker 3: the top, but those little islets. He would sit there
- 32:54Speaker 3: and he would put, dude, how much better do I look? Now?
- 32:58Speaker 3: By the way, this is better for your audience. But
- 33:03Speaker 3: he would sit there in the dugout during a game
- 33:05Speaker 3: and he would be doing that and I'm like, what
- 33:07Speaker 3: are you doing? And he's like he was just watching
- 33:10Speaker 3: the picture only through that little people or whatever you
- 33:14Speaker 3: call it islet ag lit. But I don't know aglit's
- 33:17Speaker 3: a shoestream. But anyway, he would sit there and he goes,
- 33:21Speaker 3: all right, tell me what's going on. So he would
- 33:23Speaker 3: look and he would watch the picture and he'd go,
- 33:25Speaker 3: that's a fastball down in a way and I'm like yeah,
- 33:30Speaker 3: And then the next one slider in the dirt inside. Yeah.
- 33:35Speaker 3: He could tell. That's how much he studied this game
- 33:39Speaker 3: where he's and again that's when I walked away. I'm like, bro,
- 33:43Speaker 3: i am going to be horrible at this game if
- 33:45Speaker 3: I'm not doing the things he's doing. But he just
- 33:49Speaker 3: he just And when we would go back to the hotel,
- 33:53Speaker 3: like after games and there were late games on, we
- 33:56Speaker 3: would go to the hotel, we'd play cards or whatever,
- 33:58Speaker 3: and he would put the game on someone else's game
- 34:02Speaker 3: and put it on. He goes, put it on mute,
- 34:05Speaker 3: and I'm like, okay, he goes, I don't want to
- 34:06Speaker 3: hear what they're telling me about the game. I want
- 34:08Speaker 3: to watch and see what they're doing in this game,
- 34:10Speaker 3: like the third baseman's playing in or they're you know,
- 34:13Speaker 3: all these little things. He paid attention to all that,
- 34:17Speaker 3: and it was, it was, it was. I was very
- 34:20Speaker 3: fortunate to play with him, along with a lot of
- 34:24Speaker 3: the other guys. But he was the guy by the way.
- 34:27Speaker 3: He was very approachable. He wouldn't come to you and
- 34:29Speaker 3: tell you, but if you ask him something about pitching,
- 34:32Speaker 3: he'd talk to you for ten hours about it.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Amazing and he was the greatest prankster ever Kent. So
- 34:38Speaker 2: let you have to tell us one. I mean, I
- 34:41Speaker 2: know there are a million prankster stories from Greg Maddocks.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Just tell us what.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Well, I don't know what what? What is this? Rated?
- 34:51Speaker 3: Is this like a you g rated?
- 34:53Speaker 1: Tell the story you told me the other day. It'll
- 34:56Speaker 1: it'll still fly, don't worry.
- 34:59Speaker 3: So chipp or Ohms is a rookie nineteen ninety five.
- 35:03Speaker 3: He's a rookie and he goes out he's like two
- 35:06Speaker 3: for three or three for four, this and that. So
- 35:09Speaker 3: we're in the shower after the game and Mad Dog's
- 35:14Speaker 3: showering right next to him and he turns and talks
- 35:18Speaker 3: to Chipper. He goes, hey, man, I've played with a
- 35:20Speaker 3: lot of rookies. You know this and that. That's so impressive,
- 35:23Speaker 3: Like I can't believe you know you just you're poise,
- 35:27Speaker 3: your this your approach to you know hitting. He goes
- 35:31Speaker 3: it's really good, You're going to have a great career,
- 35:33Speaker 3: and Chippers like, oh my god, I can't believe Greg
- 35:37Speaker 3: Maddox is talking to me. You know, I'm twenty years
- 35:39Speaker 3: old and I got one of the best pitchers talking
- 35:41Speaker 3: to me. Well, ends up, Maddox didn't care. But he
- 35:47Speaker 3: was peen on him the entire times he was telling
- 35:50Speaker 3: this story and we're all we all see it, we're laughing,
- 35:56Speaker 3: and Chipper's just like, oh my god, this is unlike dude,
- 35:59Speaker 3: he's pissed on you. Like, but that's who Maddox was.
- 36:06Speaker 3: That's that's who it was. And I'll tell you another
- 36:11Speaker 3: and he may be mad for telling us. But in
- 36:13Speaker 3: spring training, like we had our workouts and it was
- 36:16Speaker 3: a little down in West Palm Beach. It was a
- 36:19Speaker 3: little you couldn't even call it a weight room today,
- 36:21Speaker 3: it would be a closet. But he would do the
- 36:24Speaker 3: EFX machine, and for him, he would wipe a booger
- 36:29Speaker 3: on the wall in front of the machine, so he
- 36:34Speaker 3: knew if he worked out that day or not. So
- 36:36Speaker 3: you'd go in there and you're like, dude, you've like, hey,
- 36:39Speaker 3: I've done the FX the last six days and I'm like,
- 36:43Speaker 3: or coach, whatever the strength, coach, how do you know,
- 36:46Speaker 3: look at my boogers, and I'm like, and then you
- 36:51Speaker 3: go out and throw a shut out, you know what
- 36:52Speaker 3: I mean? And then you're like, dude. It got to
- 36:55Speaker 3: the point with Mad Dog in ninety three, ninety four,
- 36:57Speaker 3: ninety five where if we were on the road and
- 37:00Speaker 3: we scored a run in the first we were like,
- 37:03Speaker 3: good game, feel bad for the other team they lost.
- 37:05Speaker 3: He was that good, but he had fun with it.
- 37:08Speaker 3: And if you asked him today, you talk about being humble,
- 37:11Speaker 3: like he wouldn't brag about anything he did personally, nothing
- 37:16Speaker 3: that he wasn't about that.

- 38:17Speaker 3: Thank you to zekeek.
- 38:23Speaker 1: Ken.
- 38:24Speaker 2: You brought up Chipper Jones, one of the greatest players
- 38:27Speaker 2: that I have ever covered. Tell us a Chipper Jones
- 38:30Speaker 2: story about how great he was.
- 38:33Speaker 3: You know what, Chipper, I don't really have any good
- 38:36Speaker 3: Chipper stories because when I was with Chipper, he was
- 38:40Speaker 3: he was a rookie, right, so he wasn't allowed to
- 38:42Speaker 3: be Chipper yet. I went back in OH three for
- 38:45Speaker 3: the playoffs, so I got to obviously revisit with Chipper. Dude.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Chipper was that guy that we saw in spring training,
- 38:53Speaker 3: just he just walked different. He moved different like before
- 38:58Speaker 3: he got a big league get back. You could just
- 39:00Speaker 3: look at him. JD. Drew is similar to this with me,
- 39:03Speaker 3: but you could look at Chipper and go this, this
- 39:07Speaker 3: kid's going to be really, really good, you know. And obviously,
- 39:11Speaker 3: now how many years later, Hall of Famer, Maybe the
- 39:14Speaker 3: best switch hitter, Tim, that's up to you. Maybe the
- 39:16Speaker 3: best switch hitter of all time. I don't know. But
- 39:20Speaker 3: Chipper was the guy that obviously started at third, moved
- 39:23Speaker 3: or left. He was gonna do whatever the team needed
- 39:26Speaker 3: him to do defensively, and obviously his offensive prowess is
- 39:31Speaker 3: as good as anybody. I actually did pretty well against
- 39:36Speaker 3: him once I got traded, which makes no sense, but
- 39:42Speaker 3: Chipper was that guy, dude. And and you know what,
- 39:45Speaker 3: if if anybody that played for Bobby was like Bobby,
- 39:49Speaker 3: it was Chipper, if that makes sense, Like he's I'm
- 39:53Speaker 3: gonna be there early, I'm gonna work hard, I'm not
- 39:55Speaker 3: gonna embarrass the team. I'm gonna help us win a
- 39:58Speaker 3: game tonight. And that's and he did it. And he
- 40:02Speaker 3: had a little arrogance to him, but I think anyone
- 40:05Speaker 3: that's that good will, but dude, great teammate, supported everybody
- 40:11Speaker 3: if I threw a pitch it was stupid, and he'd
- 40:15Speaker 3: tell me, dude, why'd you throw that pitch? Here's as
- 40:18Speaker 3: a hitter. This is what I'm looking for in that situation.
- 40:20Speaker 3: That count like it was a two way street with
- 40:23Speaker 3: him and obviously deserves what he got Hall of Fame
- 40:27Speaker 3: and yeah, great player. And Bobby took him right out
- 40:34Speaker 3: of the gate and made sure he knew how to
- 40:36Speaker 3: play the game. And by the way, did you know this?
- 40:39Speaker 3: Did you know the story that this was back when
- 40:43Speaker 3: the draft that the Braves wonted Van Poppel remember him
- 40:46Speaker 3: from Texas?
- 40:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I know the story, Ken, but you need to
- 40:50Speaker 2: tell it. This is my favorite Chipper Jones story.
- 40:56Speaker 3: Yeah, so the Braves are to pick and they were
- 41:00Speaker 3: going to take Van Poppo and Van Poppole's agent at
- 41:03Speaker 3: the time, we all know who he is. He said,
- 41:05Speaker 3: he's not signing, he's going to school, right and you know,
- 41:10Speaker 3: committed and not knowing that apparently he had a deal
- 41:15Speaker 3: with Oakland down the road. The rules have changed today,
- 41:18Speaker 3: you can't do it. But so they pass on Van
- 41:22Speaker 3: Poppole and they end up drafting Chipper Jones. And then
- 41:26Speaker 3: Bobby tells the stories like you know what, efim, I
- 41:29Speaker 3: got the better player. It ended up working out for
- 41:31Speaker 3: the Braves, obviously, you know, and nothing against Van Poppa
- 41:34Speaker 3: won fifty five games in the big leagues. But they
- 41:37Speaker 3: weren't going to take Chipper. They needed pitching, which the
- 41:40Speaker 3: Braves did back then. They drafted their pitcher. If we
- 41:44Speaker 3: get the best pitchers, we're going to win games. Bobby
- 41:46Speaker 3: always believed that, and they they missed out on Van
- 41:49Speaker 3: Poppel because they didn't think they were going to sign him.
- 41:52Speaker 3: If they drafted him, he was going to go to school.
- 41:54Speaker 3: And there's Chipper just sitting there. And Bobby loved Chipper obviously,
- 41:58Speaker 3: and they took Chipper. And then twenty years later, story
- 42:03Speaker 3: wrote itself, right.
- 42:05Speaker 2: But the kicker to that story is the meeting that
- 42:08Speaker 2: the Braves had with Chipper pre draft. Lasted thirty minutes,
- 42:15Speaker 2: that's it. And he didn't have an agent. His dad
- 42:18Speaker 2: was an agent. And his dad said, Chipper, you can
- 42:20Speaker 2: get more than this, but I'm not interested in making
- 42:24Speaker 2: money here. He said, I am here because I want
- 42:27Speaker 2: to be the number one pick. I want to play
- 42:28Speaker 2: right away. And he said, and I'm going to make
- 42:31Speaker 2: so much money in this game, I don't need to
- 42:33Speaker 2: get it in the first contract. Does that not personify
- 42:37Speaker 2: who Chipper is?
- 42:40Speaker 3: One hundred percent? He knew he was a good player,
- 42:42Speaker 3: He knew that the Braves were the perfect organization, and
- 42:45Speaker 3: that thirty minutes, I'm sure Bobby was involved. And if
- 42:50Speaker 3: you spend thirty minutes in a recruiting meeting with Bobby,
- 42:52Speaker 3: you're going to sign with Bobby, right like, You're going
- 42:55Speaker 3: to leave there going Okay, the Florida kid. Atlanta's kind
- 42:59Speaker 3: of close to home if you can be close. At
- 43:02Speaker 3: the time, there are no teams in Florida, and so
- 43:05Speaker 3: it was just a perfect fit. But and you know what,
- 43:08Speaker 3: Chipper probably could have made a lot more money playing
- 43:11Speaker 3: this game had he gone free agency, but he wasn't
- 43:15Speaker 3: going to leave Bobby right And it again another compliment
- 43:20Speaker 3: to Bobby is that you got the best players in
- 43:22Speaker 3: the world and they don't want to leave you, even
- 43:26Speaker 3: though they could make twice as much money. You know,
- 43:28Speaker 3: he made play money, don't get me wrong, but probably
- 43:31Speaker 3: could have made more. But I'm buying into the everything
- 43:35Speaker 3: that goes on here in Atlanta. And you know, they
- 43:38Speaker 3: end up winning fourteen consecutive divisions, which will I don't
- 43:41Speaker 3: think will ever be done in any sport again. But yeah, Chipper,
- 43:46Speaker 3: Chipper is a great dude man. Like I know he's
- 43:48Speaker 3: had a couple off the field issues with marriages, but
- 43:52Speaker 3: so what he was he was there ready to hit
- 43:54Speaker 3: third every day from the left side to the right side.
- 43:58Speaker 3: And where do you need me to play third left?
- 44:00Speaker 3: I'll play anywhere. I just I just want to be
- 44:02Speaker 3: part of this kent.
- 44:04Speaker 4: You in your career seventeen years, played for a number
- 44:08Speaker 4: of teams, including the Braves twice, the Reds a couple times.
- 44:13Speaker 1: And so for you, I mean the Braves.
- 44:16Speaker 4: We've talked a lot about those teams in your years
- 44:19Speaker 4: in Atlanta, But tell us a little bit about you know,
- 44:21Speaker 4: bouncing around, whether it was you know, the then Indians
- 44:24Speaker 4: or the Orioles.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Or the Angels.
- 44:26Speaker 4: I mean, you had quite a career on quite a
- 44:29Speaker 4: few teams. And I always ask players this, especially ones
- 44:31Speaker 4: who bounce around. Do you have a jersey in your
- 44:34Speaker 4: home of every team you played for?
- 44:39Speaker 3: I did. But by the way, if you ask me
- 44:43Speaker 3: people that don't know me, or like who'd you play for,
- 44:46Speaker 3: I'm like, let's save some time. I'll tell you the
- 44:49Speaker 3: teams I didn't play for and we'll start from the right.
- 44:55Speaker 3: But yeah, and you know what, like people ask me,
- 44:59Speaker 3: what's your favorit replace Atlanta will always be my favorite
- 45:02Speaker 3: place to play. That's where I learned the game at
- 45:04Speaker 3: the big league level. Uh, you guys know Ryan Dempster, right,
- 45:08Speaker 3: probably the funniest guy. Of course, he told me. He
- 45:13Speaker 3: told me one time, and I can't do the math
- 45:16Speaker 3: right now, nine times twenty five as what two twenty five?
- 45:19Speaker 3: He goes, Dude, you're you're one. You're somebody's top two
- 45:23Speaker 3: hundred and twenty fifth best teammate ever. You know, like
- 45:29Speaker 3: who's your favorite too, Well, you're definitely in my top
- 45:31Speaker 3: two twenty five March and I'm like, thanks buddy, But
- 45:36Speaker 3: now you know what, Like I got to play for
- 45:38Speaker 3: obviously Bobby, I got to play for Larusa. I played
- 45:42Speaker 3: for some real Dusty Baker. I got to play for
- 45:45Speaker 3: some really good managers with completely as much success but
- 45:50Speaker 3: just completely different styles of managing. And I feel blessed.
- 45:55Speaker 3: And yeah, you'd rather play for one team your whole career.
- 45:59Speaker 3: But a lot of the times when I got traded,
- 46:01Speaker 3: it was you know, the deadline, it was we need
- 46:05Speaker 3: a lefty, you know, So I always upgraded when I
- 46:08Speaker 3: got traded. You know, like the one year I got
- 46:10Speaker 3: traded from Cincinnati three we were like thirty games under
- 46:15Speaker 3: five hundred or twenty five, and the Braves called and
- 46:19Speaker 3: they traded me to the Braves, and I'm like, dude,
- 46:21Speaker 3: I'm going to the playoffs, you know what I mean. Like, so,
- 46:24Speaker 3: I didn't mind moving around. I loved meeting all the
- 46:27Speaker 3: guys I got to meet over the years. Like baseball,
- 46:31Speaker 3: whether it's it's a fraternity, you know, like you'll immediately
- 46:34Speaker 3: fit in, You'll immediately get along with guys. And that's
- 46:38Speaker 3: what I love about that game. It's just you fit in.
- 46:42Speaker 3: So I'm not going to say I wished I played
- 46:45Speaker 3: for nine teams, but I appreciate it looking back that
- 46:48Speaker 3: I got to meet a lot of different guys and
- 46:52Speaker 3: the friendships I've made over the years from playing for
- 46:54Speaker 3: those nine different teams was awesome. It was a little
- 46:58Speaker 3: tough on my wife. You get a call and say, hey,
- 47:02Speaker 3: you need to be in Atlanta tomorrow or you need
- 47:04Speaker 3: to be in Cleveland tomorrow, and you know, I just
- 47:07Speaker 3: had to go. It was my family that was tougher
- 47:10Speaker 3: on that they got to unpack a condo somehow get
- 47:13Speaker 3: back to you know, here in Ohio and then figure
- 47:16Speaker 3: out where they're going to go from there. But for me,
- 47:17Speaker 3: it was great.
- 47:18Speaker 2: So Kent, you played with seventeen Hall of Famers. You
- 47:22Speaker 2: told me that this morning at four am. Off the
- 47:26Speaker 2: top of my head, I went through all the teams
- 47:27Speaker 2: you played, and I tried to come up with all
- 47:30Speaker 2: the Hall of Famers and I think I'm missing.
- 47:33Speaker 1: Somebody or two. Well do you know, do you remember
- 47:37Speaker 1: all the Hall of Famers you played with.
- 47:39Speaker 3: I'm including managers in that.
- 47:42Speaker 1: Oh okay, well, Bobby.
- 47:44Speaker 3: That might be why your list is short. So Bobby
- 47:47Speaker 3: LaRussa dusty like, so I'm including that. And by the way,
- 47:53Speaker 3: if they have if they ever let the steroid era
- 47:56Speaker 3: in which I don't know if they will or not,
- 48:00Speaker 3: obviously that's a debatable topic. But then my list jumps
- 48:04Speaker 3: up like six more guys, and I always say it's
- 48:07Speaker 3: because I was a supportive teammate. They wouldn't have got
- 48:10Speaker 3: there without me. I'm kidding, obviously, but yeah, it seems
- 48:17Speaker 3: like every other year when they do the induction, I'm like,
- 48:19Speaker 3: oh man, I played with him, Yeah, I played with him.
- 48:22Speaker 3: Oh Man, I played with him too, Like It's just weird.
- 48:26Speaker 3: And honestly, that's part of traveling around as much as
- 48:29Speaker 3: I did, from team to team. And I don't know
- 48:32Speaker 3: if anyone can say they played with more. Maybe there is,
- 48:35Speaker 3: but certainly, if you played with one team your whole career,
- 48:38Speaker 3: you're not going to be able to say you played
- 48:40Speaker 3: with seventeen Hall of famers. I mean, even a Yankee.
- 48:46Speaker 1: How about this.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Bobby Cox, Joe Tory, Tony La Russa all went into
- 48:49Speaker 2: the Hall of Fame at the same in the same year,
- 48:53Speaker 2: and Steve Carse played for all three of those guys.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Ken, even you didn't do that? That isn't that pretty cool?
- 49:01Speaker 2: That I played with the three managers who were going
- 49:04Speaker 2: in the same year.
- 49:06Speaker 3: Yep. And didn't Maddix and Glad go in that year
- 49:10Speaker 3: as well or Smolts, I believe yes, which I thought
- 49:16Speaker 3: was cool. And you know what, and because of that,
- 49:20Speaker 3: I didn't make your final end list. I get it,
- 49:24Speaker 3: you went with the k Carse. I get that.
- 49:29Speaker 2: That kid we had John smolt On a couple of
- 49:33Speaker 2: years ago.
- 49:34Speaker 1: Just tell he forget that. He's one of the.
- 49:37Speaker 2: Greatest pictures we've ever seen. Slider fastball Combo was just
- 49:41Speaker 2: breathtaking to watch. But tell us the story about how
- 49:46Speaker 2: competitive John Smoltz was not just in baseball, but in
- 49:51Speaker 2: everything in life.
- 49:54Speaker 3: Dude. It was golf. He was so competitive playing. Remember
- 49:58Speaker 3: the game five hundred where you would if you catch
- 50:01Speaker 3: up all in the air worth one hundred one hop
- 50:03Speaker 3: seventy five. Dude, we were playing for money during batting practice.
- 50:08Speaker 3: Bobby's in there going Jesus, these guys are going to
- 50:10Speaker 3: get hurt because they want to win seventy two dollars. Like,
- 50:15Speaker 3: he was competitive as anything. But I'll tell you one.
- 50:18Speaker 3: I'll tell you one Smulty story that and this is
- 50:23Speaker 3: what I love about John. And he may be mad
- 50:25Speaker 3: if I tell you, but he's anyway. Smolty would come
- 50:28Speaker 3: in his day to pitch, right, and let's say it's
- 50:31Speaker 3: a Monday. He would come in with like a neck
- 50:34Speaker 3: braceon and he'd be like, oh, man, I tweaked my
- 50:37Speaker 3: neck sleeping last night. And we're like, you know, Leo's like,
- 50:40Speaker 3: can you pitch? He's like, I'll give it a shot,
- 50:43Speaker 3: you know, And he'd go out and go eight, strikeout
- 50:46Speaker 3: thirteen and you know, give up one run or no runs.
- 50:50Speaker 3: And then the next day we're playing five hundred, He's
- 50:52Speaker 3: jumping all over trying to rob home runs and VP
- 50:55Speaker 3: and then four days later his day to start again
- 50:58Speaker 3: or five days he'd come in like with a ankle
- 51:02Speaker 3: bray song and he's like, ah, I tweaked it, you know.
- 51:04Speaker 3: But it was almost like it got to the point
- 51:07Speaker 3: where if Smoltzy didn't have one day, it was chiggers,
- 51:12Speaker 3: chigger bites it, my arms swollen, like can you pitch? Yeah?
- 51:15Speaker 3: And then you go eight scoreless. And he got to
- 51:18Speaker 3: the point where I was in the bullpen. If Smoltzy
- 51:22Speaker 3: came in his day to start and said he felt great,
- 51:25Speaker 3: we were like, guys, we better get ready early, get
- 51:28Speaker 3: down there early, because Smoltzy's probably not going to get
- 51:30Speaker 3: out a second in it, you know what I mean.
- 51:32Speaker 3: Like he it was like we always timed it like
- 51:36Speaker 3: it's like he I don't know what it was, but dude,
- 51:41Speaker 3: but you talk about a competitor. Oh my god, Smoltzy
- 51:44Speaker 3: would bet you flip a coin and just bet you
- 51:48Speaker 3: that he wins and you lose. Like he was that guy.
- 51:51Speaker 3: Obviously a great pitcher, I mean, by far had the
- 51:55Speaker 3: best stuff on that staff. And for what he did,
- 51:59Speaker 3: I think what two hundred minimum two hundred wins, one
- 52:01Speaker 3: hundred and fifty saves, like just next level guy and
- 52:06Speaker 3: unbelievable guy. And we would play like in the offseason,
- 52:09Speaker 3: we would go play open. I don't know if you
- 52:12Speaker 3: know this about Smallcy, but he's from Michigan Lancing and
- 52:18Speaker 3: he had a full ride to play basketball under jud
- 52:20Speaker 3: Heathcote up at Michigan State. He was that good of
- 52:23Speaker 3: an athlete. And obviously he chose what he chose and
- 52:28Speaker 3: the rest is history. But he was. He's the one
- 52:32Speaker 3: guy that if you made a game up, like if
- 52:35Speaker 3: the Kirchin family has a game that you guys made
- 52:38Speaker 3: up and you do it during holidays, he would be
- 52:41Speaker 3: better than you. In fifteen minutes. He would figure it
- 52:43Speaker 3: out somebody, he would and it could be like, well, dude,
- 52:47Speaker 3: here's what we do. We take a spoon and throw
- 52:49Speaker 3: it against the wall and then you have to run
- 52:51Speaker 3: around the court. He would beat you within fifteen minutes.
- 52:54Speaker 3: And if he didn't believe it, would go practice and
- 52:57Speaker 3: then he'd say, hey, I'm coming back next Christmas. I
- 52:59Speaker 3: will beat all you guys in this game. So that's
- 53:02Speaker 3: how Smaltzy was. And you know what the practing was,
- 53:11Speaker 3: Guy like we had. Obviously we're facing our opponents, the Giants,
- 53:15Speaker 3: the Yankees, whoever it was, but we built this kind
- 53:19Speaker 3: of competition within our own pitching staff, right, Like you
- 53:23Speaker 3: didn't want to be the guy that didn't have the
- 53:25Speaker 3: good game because Smoltzy goes out throws seven scorels, Glad
- 53:28Speaker 3: goes and throws eight scoreless, Maddix throws a shutout like
- 53:32Speaker 3: you kind of incentivized you and motivated us to not
- 53:38Speaker 3: embarrass ourselves, you know what I mean. It was like
- 53:40Speaker 3: a competition within the team, within the rotation that just
- 53:46Speaker 3: made us all better. And it wasn't personal, like everyone
- 53:50Speaker 3: supported everybody, but it was just a really cool blend
- 53:53Speaker 3: of guys that, hey, let's go out and do this.
- 53:58Speaker 2: Glavin told me what's and that when they when they
- 54:02Speaker 2: would do the you know, the March Madness pools. John
- 54:06Speaker 2: was always in charge of collecting everything for the March
- 54:09Speaker 2: Madness pool and Glavin looked at Smoltz and said, John,
- 54:13Speaker 2: this is just going to be a donation to you.
- 54:16Speaker 2: We already know that you're gonna win the NCAA basketball
- 54:20Speaker 2: pool because you win at everything.
- 54:24Speaker 1: Does that sound right?
- 54:28Speaker 3: And honestly, it was annoying a lot of the times
- 54:32Speaker 3: because you go out and play golf and I'm like,
- 54:35Speaker 3: I'm pretty good at golf, and then you just we
- 54:38Speaker 3: go to the parking lot after golf. It would be
- 54:41Speaker 3: we had a built in four man force theme because
- 54:45Speaker 3: the guy that pitched that night obviously didn't play golf
- 54:48Speaker 3: that day, so the other four of us would go
- 54:49Speaker 3: and play Solso had set all that up, and I
- 54:52Speaker 3: just remember how many times play golf I felt like
- 54:56Speaker 3: I played good. And then we'd be in the parking
- 54:58Speaker 3: lot getting ready to leave, and it it's just us
- 55:00Speaker 3: handing money to Smolts. What murky owemi one twenty? Glad
- 55:05Speaker 3: you owe me two ten if you owe eighty, And
- 55:09Speaker 3: we were just sitting here going like an ATM machine,
- 55:13Speaker 3: and we're like, this is annoying us. But you know what,
- 55:16Speaker 3: we did it the next day. It wasn't that bad.
- 55:18Speaker 3: But there we were again, sweating from playing eighteen holes
- 55:23Speaker 3: flip flops on handing Smoltz money.
- 55:26Speaker 1: That's how you know we had he had.
- 55:29Speaker 2: He has eleven holes in one at least the last
- 55:32Speaker 2: time I talked to him.
- 55:33Speaker 1: Eleven. Yeah, does that sound low to you or high?
- 55:36Speaker 3: Given it's John Smolts, that well, I think eleven's high
- 55:43Speaker 3: for anybody. But he'll get twelve before this podcast airs,
- 55:50Speaker 3: I promise you. But he because listen, he's he's out there.
- 55:55Speaker 3: You know. The funny thing about Smoltzy too, golf lies.
- 55:58Speaker 3: So I don't know how many years this was, maybe
- 56:00Speaker 3: eight or nine years ago. He got an exemption because
- 56:03Speaker 3: he always said, when I turned fifty, I'm going to
- 56:06Speaker 3: play on the senior Tour, and I know some golfers.
- 56:10Speaker 3: He knows golfers, and the PGA guys like rolled their eyes,
- 56:14Speaker 3: like really, he doesn't realize that like the game at
- 56:19Speaker 3: this level. But Smoltcy's winning his club championships every year,
- 56:23Speaker 3: and he got an exemption. It was somewhere Sugarloaf, maybe
- 56:26Speaker 3: down in Georgia. He got an exemption to play in
- 56:30Speaker 3: the at the time was a nationwide tour, which is
- 56:34Speaker 3: kind of like triple A to the PGA. So me
- 56:37Speaker 3: and A have I call I text Dave, I go, dude,
- 56:40Speaker 3: we gotta watch Smolcy. He shoots eighty seven eighty eight,
- 56:44Speaker 3: finishes dead last, misses the cut, So a good teammate
- 56:50Speaker 3: would would just let it go. But me and A
- 56:53Speaker 3: have texted him and said, really, dude, what the heck
- 56:56Speaker 3: just happened to you? Bro? Like that's embarrassing and he's like,
- 57:01Speaker 3: oh well, and he was like, the pace of play
- 57:04Speaker 3: is horrible. I'm used to getting in the cart driving
- 57:06Speaker 3: right up to my ball and it's what we call
- 57:09Speaker 3: it ready golf. Even if someone's ten yards behind you
- 57:12Speaker 3: and they're not ready. If you're up there, you just hit. Well,
- 57:14Speaker 3: He's like, the pace of play was ridiculous, Like he
- 57:18Speaker 3: was sitting there like getting nervous over shots because he
- 57:21Speaker 3: had to wait so long. But we definitely made fun
- 57:25Speaker 3: of him for probably well I still do, like twelve
- 57:29Speaker 3: years later, ten years later, I'll still send him a text, Dude,
- 57:32Speaker 3: remember that time you shot eighty seven eighty eight at
- 57:34Speaker 3: Sugar Old Like that's embarrassing and he's like, yeah, whatever.
- 57:39Speaker 3: But now Smoltzy's dude you talk about and all of
- 57:43Speaker 3: us were competitive, but Smoltzy had to win, you know
- 57:46Speaker 3: what I mean? Uh?
- 57:48Speaker 2: Ken, you know the story about the time that Frank
- 57:50Speaker 2: Korr had a beat right and then something went wrong?
- 57:54Speaker 1: Do you know that story?
- 57:56Speaker 3: No, I haven't heard this.
- 57:57Speaker 1: I can't believe it. I want to tell you a
- 57:58Speaker 1: story that you don't know.
- 58:00Speaker 2: Frank Coorr, who's a really good player, but he's not
- 58:03Speaker 2: Smoltzy great.
- 58:05Speaker 1: He's five shots ahead.
- 58:07Speaker 2: Going into eighteen, five shots ahead of Smoltz and says, finally, John,
- 58:13Speaker 2: I finally beat you. They're going into eighteen, and Smolten says, yep,
- 58:17Speaker 2: you got me, Frenchie, you got me today.
- 58:19Speaker 1: But let's just finish up.
- 58:21Speaker 2: It's a par five, And to make a long story short,
- 58:25Speaker 2: Frenchie is five shots ahead and he loses by five shots.
- 58:31Speaker 1: He lost ten shots.
- 58:34Speaker 2: On the eighteenth hole, he took a fourteen and Smoltzy
- 58:40Speaker 2: birdied eighteen, made a four. Smoltze Frank Corer made a
- 58:45Speaker 2: fourteen on the and a really good player because Smoltzy
- 58:50Speaker 2: got inside his head and absolutely spooked him. When he
- 58:54Speaker 2: hit the first ball like in the water, like he
- 58:57Speaker 2: had an opportunity to go place it down there. Smolty said,
- 59:01Speaker 2: now you should probably hit another one from up here.
- 59:03Speaker 3: So he hit another one in the water.
- 59:05Speaker 1: And ended up making a fourteen.
- 59:07Speaker 2: So when they get to the ballpark, he doesn't tell
- 59:10Speaker 2: a soul exactly what happened, but when he arranged it
- 59:14Speaker 2: with every teammate and you can see Smoltzy doing this,
- 59:17Speaker 2: whatever question Frank Core asked. The answer was fourteen, Like,
- 59:24Speaker 2: what time does the game start today?
- 59:26Speaker 1: It starts at fourteen. He set up the entire team
- 59:30Speaker 1: to do that. Does that sound like Frenchie and Smoltsy
- 59:33Speaker 1: to you?
- 59:34Speaker 3: One percent? One hundred percent? And you know what, guys,
- 59:38Speaker 3: it's those stories and it's it's it's all part of
- 59:43Speaker 3: that is why that team was so good for so long. Right,
- 59:46Speaker 3: No one was better than anybody. Everyone could take it
- 59:50Speaker 3: and dish it out. And that's what made that team
- 59:52Speaker 3: so close. And the years I played there, no one
- 59:56Speaker 3: was off limits, right, Like, I don't know if you
- 59:59Speaker 3: saw a couple of years ago when Chipper and Glave
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: Smoltzy were doing a game in Atlanta in the booth
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: and they showed a video of Smoltzy getting hit. Did
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: you see that where he got hitting the ribs?
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: Yes?
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: And dude, it was the worst go down ever. Like
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: it looked like like a fish in the boat when
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: you try to put him in. He was flopping. He
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: went down, And dude, I listened to that broadcast and
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: Chipper just and Frank Kor was in there as well.
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: He was there too, and they were giving Smoltzy so
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: much crap for that because it did like if you
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: look at it, like part of it is I've been
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: hit when I was hitting, and you kind of don't
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: let him show it hurt, right, Like, don't rub it,
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: don't do any dude. Smoltzy went down like a sniper
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: shot him from the rooftop of the building. And I
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: listened to that broadcast and it didn't just it was like,
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: all right, we're gonna take a break. The inning's over.
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: The next in he started and they were still giving
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: smallti craft for that, and he really couldn't defend himself
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: because it's like once you see it, you can't unsee it,
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: like you're a grown man, dude. And he was like
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: he's like, well, you know, he was throwing ninety whatever
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: and it took the wind out of me. And Chipper's
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: just like, nah, dude, look you flop like a fish.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: Like just look at that. And to hear four three
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: Hall of Famers ragging on each other was just awesome.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: That's what the game, right.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: We can't let you go without telling us a Tom
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: Glavin story.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: We bit over Bobby, We've.
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: Been over Chipper, we've been over Maddex, We've been over Smolts.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: Tom Glavin is a Hall of Famer. Also tell us
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: a Tom Glavin story of any kind, Dude, You.
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: Know, it's hard to tell a glove story, because.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: That's the point Glad was.
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: If he was an ice cream, he would be vanilla right,
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: Like there's no sparkle to it. He just went out
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: did his job. The thing about Glad that impressed me
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: was and and Leo would always preach this, like he
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: was about your composure on the mound, not only executing,
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: but be composed. You could walk in in the fifth
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: inning of a game with Matt or with Glad. Pitching
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: power went out, so there's no scoreboard and you couldn't
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: tell if Glad was winning three nothing or losing three nothing.
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: He just They always said he had ice pumping through
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: his veins, and he did. And I think his hockey
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: background was was a lot of that. Like he was
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: I think a fourth round overall picking up. I think
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: the LA King's drafting him.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: They had a Brett Hoole.
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: Brett Hoole, Yeah, we had him on the podcast can
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: and he said that kind of makes me a Hall
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: of Fame hockey player as well.
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: Yes, he's If you do a G list for hockey.
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: He's on your list. But it just I wish I
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: had a great story. But Glave was awesome, by the way,
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: unbelievable teammate, willing to help anybody help me with my
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: change up when I was trying to learn the change up.
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: But he was boring in a great way, you know
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: what I mean, Like there's no booger stories or no
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: peeing on the shower stories. He was just he was
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: just stoic and just you knew it was his day.
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: He was going to pitch, and you knew probably what
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: the results were going to be. And I wish I
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: had some good Glove stories, but he was boring in
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: the most complimentary way I could give. But again, great teammate,
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: part of that competition, and I mean it's hard to
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: pick one of the three or four, but you won
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: him on game seven. You know, when he closed it
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: out in Game six against Cleveland, gave up one hit
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: to that lineup, You're like, yeah, that's Glad and you
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: I don't even think he fist pumped after that game.
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: He just kind of went in and said, that's my job, right, Like,
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: why are you so excited that we won that game?
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: That's my job. Like that's how Glad was.
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: He takes He takes me as one of those guys
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: that if you had an Apple Watch on him during
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: that game, his heart rate probably didn't go over like
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: fifty one. He's just no, I'm just here to I'm
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: here to do my job game six or July, Like
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: it doesn't really matter to him, right, he just that's
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: the same job.
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: He probably would have gotten an alert saying your heart
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: rate's low. Are you suffering chest pains right now? Like
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: That's how Glad was. That's how he was, And it
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: just it was fun to learn from him. I mean,
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: he was just as competitive as all the other guys,
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: trust me, Like out there golfing, like when I was
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: paying Smoltz, I wasn't cussing. When Glad was paying Smoltz.
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: He was cussing to him, right because he didn't want
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: to lose. And he's like, I'm doing it again, like
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: blah blah blah dah dah. Like he was every bit
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: as competitive. You just you couldn't see it. And and
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: I took a lot from that, like and and listen,
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: not to be corny about this, but I learned a
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: lot from all those guys and I tried to fashion
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: that into my game. Obviously wasn't as good as maddics,
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: as control, wasn't as all those things, but I tried
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: to emulate them as much as I could, which is
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: probably the only reason I made it seventeen years, because well,
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: if I was right handed after two, they would have
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: called me coach marker because I wouldn't have been playing
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: with my stuff. But no, dude, it's and I'm sitting
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: here trying to rattle my brain. Is there a great
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: Madic or Clavin story? And I can't come up with one.
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: That's That's how even keeled he was. Whether he was
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: pitching that day or not pitching that day, he was
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: the same dude. But I'm fortunate to say I played
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: with him.
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: If keen listeners or watchers saw my my near three
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: year old daughter had interrupted our interview here. She's snuck in,
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: even though Grandma and my wife are upstairs with our
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: newborn as well. She somehow escaped down to the basement
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: into my office to say hi to Kent, Mrker.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: But Kent, I know because you referenced it.
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: You even said that your girls will be watching to
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: see who the alphabet M will be hoping it's a murder.
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: So you are a girl dad. I am a girl dad.
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: My dad is a girl dad as well. Tell us
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: about raising those girls and how much that means to you,
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: because at the end of the day, Kent, we can baseball.
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: Is why we do this podcast. But it's a it's
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: a father son show. It's about our love for you know.
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: We talk about my dad's grandchildren, we talk about my kids,
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: we talk about our relationship, me and my dad.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: This is what the podcast is about. So without yeah,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: that setting you up to get.
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: Too emotional, tell us what these girls mean to you
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: and being a girl dad, for it's such a special thing,
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: you know what.
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: I'm so blessed to have three girls and now, giving
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: my age, they're thirty two, twenty eight, and twenty five,
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: so they're young women now. But you're gonna laugh at this.
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: I raised them like they were boys, like my dad
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: raised me like. I don't think values are how you
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: should be as a human being, matter whether you're a
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: girl or a boy. But I told them at young ages,
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: and this is gonna sound stupid, but if you really
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: think about it, it makes a lot of sense. I
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: told them three rules. Don't whine, don't be a tattletale,
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: and don't chew with your mouth open. That's what I
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: told her. I said, because I hate whiny people. Yes,
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: I hate the kid that tells on you and all that.
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: And if I'm sitting across from you guys and you're
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: smacking your lips while you're eating, I'm getting up. I said,
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: if you can do those three things, And to this day,
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: they're like, Dad the three rules, and they remember them
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: and it's so simple. But it's kind of like the
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: Bobby Cocks way of thinking. It's just simple, don't be
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: an idiot, you know what I mean, and you'll get
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: through life. And they're all doing very well in their
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: own professions now. But dude. Everyone always said, dude, don't
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: you wish you had a boy? Or are you going
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: to try for a boy so he can be a
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: baseball player? And I'm like, no, I'm so excited that
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: I've got one three healthy, which is cliche, but I
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: raised him as I would have raised any boy I had,
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: and I think it's benefited them probably most of the time.
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: Sometimes maybe my oldest is just like me, and I'm like,
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: I don't know if that's a blessing or a curse.
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: But he's she's yeah, And I wouldn't trade it. If
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: you told me I could go back and have three
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: boys instead of girls, I'd say, nope, I'm good. I
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: love my girls. They taught me a lot to be
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: a father, right. But you know, when they're all playing
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: their sports. I remember one day, my oldest daughter, she
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: was playing softball. She was a good softball player, and
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: it was a cloudy, overcast and Ohio, which we get
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: three hundred and forty seven days out of the year.
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: I lived in.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: Cleveland for a long time.
- 1:09:27Speaker 6: I know those days.
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: Okay, So you know, so she's out there. I get
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: to the game. She's out there playing first base, and
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: she's got her Oakley's on her hat, right, and then
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: four or five of the other girls have their Oakley's
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: on their hat, and it's literally, we don't even know
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: if we're going to play because the rain's imminent. Right,
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: So after the first inning, I go down. I was
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: not the dad that yelled and screamed at the umpires
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: or coaches for why, you know, but I went and
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: pulled her aside. I said, take those Oakley's off your hat.
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: You look like an idiot, right, And she's like, what,
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: I go, You're the only reason those are on your
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: hat is because you want to look cool. I go,
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: it's overcast, eighty two percent chance of rain and you're
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: wearing you got ok le's on your hat. I go,
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: take them off, Take them off, put them in your bag.
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: And she did. And then after the game she told me.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: And one time she threw her bat after a strikeout
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: and the bat popped up and almost hit the catcher.
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: I screamed at her from the stands. I said, you
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: did not do that, Like, it's not the catcher's fault.
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: You struck out. If you want to hurt someone, go
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: punch the dugout wall and hurt yourself, but do not
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: put And after the game, my wife was mad at
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: me for yelling at her. And then she goes, I'm
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: riding home with dad and she goes, Dad, I totally
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: get what you mean. And to this day she says
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: the same thing. So I wasn't easy on him. I
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: spoiled him, but I was like for me, when it
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: came to how are you going to be a better
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: person and productive, it was pretty simple and a lot
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: of that. By the way, my mom and Dad were great.
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: But Bobby Cox go back to had I done any
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: of these things and Bobby Cox saw it, he would
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: have been like, like, Bobby had a rule. You couldn't
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: wear your hat backwards. He's like, if you're gonna wear
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: a hat, you wear it the right way, or don't
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: wear one at all. You couldn't wear jewelry like things
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: like that. Was like just basic things that don't be
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: an idiot. And I instilled that in my girls, and
- 1:11:23Speaker 3: I think it worked. I don't know, but Ken, I
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: was a little league gum pipped and then by the
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: way they know I wasn't one of the m's, by
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: the way they knew there were six.
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: Well, we can't wait for the girls to see this
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: episode because genuinely, my dad was just so. He called me, listen, Ken,
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: we do three episodes a week.
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: Okay, he's my dad. We talk constantly, business and you
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: know life.
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: He called me to tell me about the text message
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: you sent.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: And then we did a all thing about.
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: It in the episode and here I am and it's
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: not how's the baby, it's I canna believe what Ken?
- 1:12:01Speaker 3: M dude. I just thought Tim when we were at
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: that molar event, last year, right right, Like i'd been
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: around you, obviously met you. You if not the best,
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: you're obviously when there's a k list for broadcasting and
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: just sports coverage, you're definitely going to be that one guy,
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: uh for sure, And every player across the board would
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: tell you that. But I had so much fun then
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: I was gonna I was actually gonna open, but I
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: didn't want to get personal with you. I was going
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: to open because I spoke and I was going to say, hey,
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: they told me to keep this short, and I was
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: going to say, and Tim does a way better job
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: at being short than me, so but I didn't know.
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: I was like, it's too soon. I don't know him
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: well enough. I don't want him to But anyway, I
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: appreciate this. And by the way, the daughter thing, it's
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: amazing how three girls growing up on the same roof
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: are three completely different persons nowadays and you kind of
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: have to coach him accordingly, right, One needs tough love,
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: one needs a pat on the back. Like it's probably
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: a lot like managing. You know, every player is different.
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: Some you need to yell at, some you need to
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: give a hug to. So it's made me a better
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: person having three daughters.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: That is so perfect.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: And this, of course two days ago was Father's Day.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: This is a perfect way to.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: End just a tremendous episode. Ken.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: We've said that that, you know, telling stories is not
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: easy for Major League Baseball players, and Steve Sparks is
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: one of the best we've ever had.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: But Jeff ken Murcer is right there with Steve Sparks.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: Am I wrong about that?
- 1:13:45Speaker 6: Oh?
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: My gosh.
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: I mean, and the vast knowledge seventeen years in the league.
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: But then the love of your children. I mean, we
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: covered it all and as my dad says very often,
- 1:13:56Speaker 4: we could go another hour with you, Ken, So we'll
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: ask you to come back next season to do another episode.
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: How does that sound, dude? I appreciate you having me on.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: All right, Well, thanks so much. Ki.
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: I'm telling you, I'm telling you t K. You are
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: a Hall of Famer buddy. You know that.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Well, there's my pleasure.
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: There's no if there's a player on this planet that
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: doesn't like you, I need to meet that player, and
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: I'm sure there isn't one. So you've done it the
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: right way and honored to be on the show.
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: Yeah, my dad's gonna ask me to cut that, but
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: I'm not going so we are going to cut that.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: But thank you very much anyway, I appreciate it.
