- 1:46very apropos, as kind of linking in with
- 1:49the whole master topic, how do we belong?
- 1:51We're talking about belongingness, right?
- 1:53So we're talking about how do we belong,
- 1:55okay, to wrap everything up.
- 1:59So how we focus shapes our daily performance.
- 2:03Hello, everyone, and welcome back to Inspirations for
- 2:06Your Life.
- 2:07Don't forget to check out BelieveMeAchieve.com after
- 2:08the show as well.
- 2:09I am your host, John Seymour.
- 2:12Serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer, podcast
- 2:16host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, passionate lifelong
- 2:21learner, and a very grateful published author recently.
- 2:25So today, I'm diving into something that touches
- 2:28every single one of us, whether we realize
- 2:31it or not.
- 2:33That is the powerful human need to belong,
- 2:37but we're not stopping there.
- 2:39We're also connecting this idea to something that
- 2:42drives your results every single day.
- 2:44What is it?
- 2:45Your focus.
- 2:46Because here is the truth, ladies and gentlemen,
- 2:48are you ready?
- 2:49Where your attention goes determines not just what
- 2:51you achieve, but where you feel you belong.
- 2:55Hmm, we never talked about that before.
- 2:58So let's unpack this together, okay?
- 3:00The first thing is, what is belonging?
- 3:04Belonging definition, belonging is the feeling of being
- 3:07accepted, valued, and included in a group or
- 3:10an environment or a culture.
- 3:12It's not just about being present.
- 3:15It is about feeling seen and understood.
- 3:19Why do we crave belonging so much?
- 3:21Great question.
- 3:23So humans are wired for connection.
- 3:25From a survival standpoint, belonging once is meant
- 3:30for our safety.
- 3:32Today, it still drives our emotional well-being
- 3:34and confidence, and of course, decision-making, right?
- 3:39Belonging versus fitting in.
- 3:41Fitting in is changing who you are to
- 3:44be accepted.
- 3:46Belonging is being accepted for who you truly
- 3:48are.
- 3:49One drains you, the other fuels you.
- 3:52So if you're trying to fit in, you're
- 3:54like having to make changes.
- 3:55That's not the way it should be.
- 3:57You should be the way you are, and
- 3:58people should accept you.
- 3:59So again, one drains you, the other fuels
- 4:01you.
- 4:02Which one drains you?
- 4:03Trying to fit in.
- 4:04So I think that's an important.
- 4:05A lot of people try to fit in
- 4:06because they feel if they don't fit in,
- 4:08they won't be liked, they won't get in.
- 4:09But the truth of the matter is, just
- 4:11be yourself.
- 4:13Core circles of belonging.
- 4:15We've got family.
- 4:16Family is often our first experience of belonging.
- 4:19It shapes our identity, our values, and our
- 4:22emotional foundation that we have.
- 4:25Extended family, this expands our sense of connection
- 4:29and introduces diversity in thought, culture, and also
- 4:35traditions.
- 4:37Friends, yep, friends become the family we choose.
- 4:41They influence habits, mindset, and even success patterns
- 4:45that we'll exhibit.
- 4:47Neighborhoods where we live impacts your sense of
- 4:52safety, your identity, and your daily interactions.
- 4:56That's important to know.
- 4:58Structured groups and identity.
- 5:01Schools.
- 5:02Schools are early ecosystems of belonging where we
- 5:06learn social roles.
- 5:08Comparison and collaboration.
- 5:10How about study groups?
- 5:11These create focused belongingness where we share goals,
- 5:16drive deeper and connection, and become more accountable.
- 5:20Clubs and organizations.
- 5:22Clubs align people with shared passions.
- 5:25Could be a hobby or something else.
- 5:27Giving identity beyond work or family.
- 5:30Now, another one that's been around for a
- 5:33long time, and people don't get why it's
- 5:35so important, that's sports, sports teams.
- 5:37Sports teach belonging through teamwork, discipline, and shared
- 5:42victories, or the losses that happen.
- 5:46Social and cultural layers.
- 5:48We've got things like religious groups.
- 5:50They provide spiritual connection, shared beliefs, and moral
- 5:54frameworks.
- 5:56We've got political groups.
- 5:58They offer ideological belonging, right?
- 6:03Though they can also create division if it's
- 6:07not balanced, so it's important to keep that
- 6:09in mind.
- 6:10Volunteer organizations help others build a powerful sense
- 6:13of purpose-driven belongingness.
- 6:16Race and cultural identity.
- 6:19Cultural belonging shapes traditions, values, and how we
- 6:22see ourselves in the world that we're in.
- 6:25Our orientation and personal identity.
- 6:27Being accepted for who you are, who you
- 6:30love at your core is one of the
- 6:32deepest forms of belonging, and sometimes it really
- 6:36trips up a lot of people because people
- 6:38think they need to be a certain way
- 6:39to be liked.
- 6:41Personal and lifestyle belonging.
- 6:43Occupation.
- 6:44Your career often becomes a major identity marker.
- 6:49It influences how others perceive you and how
- 6:51you perceive yourself.
- 6:53Financial status.
- 6:55Money can create inclusion or exclusion.
- 6:58Impacting confidence and opportunity.
- 7:01And when one happens and excludes something, and
- 7:05you have lack you focus on, you just
- 7:07get more of that lack.
- 7:10Dating and relationships.
- 7:12Romantic as well as non-romantic connections.
- 7:16Bring emotional belongingness, but also a sense of
- 7:20vulnerability.
- 7:21We've got things like parties and social events.
- 7:25These are short-term belonging environments, and that
- 7:28can either energize us or drain us, depending
- 7:31on the alignment that's present.
- 7:34The missing link.
- 7:35Focus now here is where most people miss.
- 7:43Belonging is not just about where you are.
- 7:46It is about what you focus on and
- 7:47who you are.
- 7:49Focus directs our emotional energy.
- 7:51If you focus on rejection, you'll feel excluded,
- 7:55even in a room full of support.
- 7:58Focus shapes your identity.
- 8:01What you consistently pay attention to becomes your
- 8:03reality and your self-image.
- 8:05Hey, this relates back to something I've said
- 8:07many times before.
- 8:09And wherever our thoughts are going, that's where
- 8:12the energy is going to flow, right?
- 8:14That's important to understand.
- 8:17Focus drives performance.
- 8:20Scattered attention leads to weak results.
- 8:24What we focus on is what we're going
- 8:26to get.
- 8:28May not be what we want, but what
- 8:30we focus on is what we get.
- 8:32Directed focus, guys, creates momentum and mastery.
- 8:37Focus filters relationships.
- 8:39You attract and retain the people you consistently
- 8:44invest attention in.
- 8:47And it becomes this subconscious behavior that we're
- 8:51not even aware that we're doing it at
- 8:53first.
- 8:54Focus builds our confidence.
- 8:56And when you focus on growth, guys, and
- 8:59progress, your sense of belonging strengthens naturally.
- 9:04Yeah, naturally.
- 9:06Practical application.
- 9:08Let's bring this home now, okay?
- 9:10If you feel like you do not belong,
- 9:12ask yourself this question.
- 9:14Where am I placing my focus?
- 9:17Am I focusing on acceptance or rejection?
- 9:21Am I aligning with the groups that reflect
- 9:24who I truly am and are part of
- 9:27my core values or not?
- 9:29Belonging is not something you wait for.
- 9:32It is something you actively create through intention,
- 9:35awareness, focus, and the actions you take.
- 9:39And I think a lot of people today,
- 9:41when you hear the word belonging, they get
- 9:43really stuck, right?
- 9:45The reason they get stuck is they want
- 9:48to do something, but they're not where they
- 9:50want to be.
- 9:52They're not where they want to be.
- 9:56And I think that hurts some people, okay?
- 10:02That's important.
- 10:07And if you don't understand that, guys, today,
- 10:10your life can be hard because you're always
- 10:15chasing your tail.
- 10:17Not because you want to, but because you
- 10:21do because of the situation or because of
- 10:24where you're currently aligned.
- 10:25What you're focusing on is saying, hey, chase
- 10:28my tail, chase my tail, chase my tail.
- 10:32But chasing your tail is not the answer.
- 10:37I want to talk about belonging in a
- 10:39sense of something called Maslow.
- 10:40It's called Maslow's Triangle.
- 10:42I'm not sure if you've heard of it
- 10:44before.
- 10:45So Maslow's Triangle is really pretty cool.
- 10:49So it basically has the different levels of
- 10:52actualization, all right?
- 10:54And so Maslow's Triangle, by the way, it's
- 10:59been around for quite a while.
- 11:03And I think a lot of people don't
- 11:05really get it at first, okay?
- 11:09But there are basically seven, think of it
- 11:15like this.
- 11:16There's seven, it's a seven level pyramid.
- 11:20And it categorizes basically human motivation into deficiency
- 11:26and growth needs.
- 11:30So everyone always asks me, John, what are
- 11:34all the seven levels?
- 11:35And so when we think about this, they're
- 11:39not hard, but they happen whether we want
- 11:43them or not.
- 11:44So what are the seven levels of Maslow's
- 11:49Triangle?
- 11:51Oh, let's go into them one by one,
- 11:52okay?
- 11:53So the very first level of the Maslow's
- 11:57Triangle is psychological needs, okay?
- 12:02And we start at basically at the bottom,
- 12:07okay?
- 12:08We start at the bottom and we work
- 12:09our way up to the top.
- 12:14So psychological needs, essential for human survival, including
- 12:17food, water, warmth, rest, and breathing, okay?
- 12:24Including other types of bodily habits, using the
- 12:29restroom and things like that.
- 12:30Those are all part of our psychological, our
- 12:34needs, part of our survival needs, part of
- 12:37what we need to do every single day,
- 12:39right?
- 12:40And so once we have, let's say, mastered
- 12:44our psychological needs, which again is the human
- 12:48survival things, water, warmth, et cetera, rest, breathing,
- 12:51et cetera, then we move on to the
- 12:53next level of Maslow's Triangle, and that's called
- 12:56safety needs.
- 12:57And that's things like protection, protection from elements,
- 13:02security, order, law, stability, and freedom, guys, from
- 13:09fear, freedom from fear.
- 13:13Everyone has the right to have freedom from
- 13:16fear, okay?
- 13:18All right, the next layer up is three,
- 13:22and that is more on the psychological needs,
- 13:26but this is now the love and the
- 13:28belongingness needs, which is what we've been talking
- 13:32about a lot here today.
- 13:33Social needs involving friendships, intimacy, first platonic and
- 13:38non-platonic, trust, acceptance, and being part of
- 13:42a group or a family.
- 13:45That's something everyone yearns for, okay?
- 13:49And when you get that, you're now ready
- 13:53to move on to the next level, which
- 13:55is esteem, the need for self-respect, achievement,
- 13:59mastery, independence, and the desire for reputation or
- 14:03respect from others.
- 14:06You can't skip the pyramid, okay?
- 14:09You have to go from the bottom and
- 14:11you have to go on your way up.
- 14:12If you don't do that, guys, what happens
- 14:15is you'll find that your pyramid is not
- 14:18going in the right direction and you're gonna
- 14:20be jumping over and you're gonna be missing
- 14:22things.
- 14:23So I think those are very important things
- 14:25that we need to focus on, okay?
- 14:27We need to focus on those things.
- 14:29And when we focus on them, we can
- 14:30understand why and how something is actually a
- 14:34certain way.
- 14:36But again, the Maslow triangle is not something
- 14:38you master overnight, just to be quite honest
- 14:41with you.
- 14:42Let's move on to the next one, okay?
- 14:44The next one is this, all right?
- 14:48We're now gonna get into the growth.
- 14:50So if you notice the first set of
- 14:52needs was basic needs, psychological needs and safety
- 14:55needs, okay?
- 14:57Then we're into psychological needs, okay?
- 15:00Which is the love and belongingness needs and
- 15:02the esteem needs, that's psychological.
- 15:04Now we move into the growth, self-fulfillment
- 15:07needs, cognitive needs, the desire for knowledge, curiosity,
- 15:13exploration, meaning, and predictability.
- 15:20We have to move through these levels of
- 15:22the triangle.
- 15:22If we don't, we will just not be
- 15:25happy in our lives, okay?
- 15:28So that's a very important thing that I
- 15:31wanna share with you, cognitive needs.
- 15:35Number six, aesthetic needs.
- 15:38The appreciation, search for beauty, balance, form, and
- 15:40art, that's number six.
- 15:43Now, once you've gotten all the way past
- 15:46this, up to the sixth level, there is
- 15:48one final level of Maslow's triangle, okay?
- 15:54Are you ready for it?
- 15:56Self-actualization.
- 16:00Now in self-actualization, there's a few different
- 16:04things in that level.
- 16:06So it's not like, you know, you're gonna
- 16:08understand overnight.
- 16:10You are not gonna understand overnight.
- 16:11The first one is realizing your personal potential.
- 16:17Some people go their entire life and don't
- 16:18realize the potential that they have within them.
- 16:21Okay, so that is very important.
- 16:24The next one is self-fulfillment, okay?
- 16:29So actually fulfilling what you can do.
- 16:32The next one is seeking personal growth.
- 16:35So not just fulfilling your desires, but growing
- 16:39and learning, okay?
- 16:45And the last one is peak experiences.
- 16:49So while originally a five-tier model, Maslow
- 16:52later expanded the hierarchy to include cognitive and
- 16:55aesthetic levels, bringing it to seven.
- 16:58So if you were all wondering like, oh,
- 16:59I don't get this, I don't understand it.
- 17:00And so a lot of people now that
- 17:02I explain it still don't understand what Maslow's
- 17:04triangle is, okay?
- 17:07Let's try to break it down again.
- 17:09Number one, survival, building stability, okay?
- 17:14Physical, mental health, and guess what guys in
- 17:17there?
- 17:17It's also financial wellbeing.
- 17:19That's number one.
- 17:21Number two is a sense of belonging.
- 17:24Your relationships, your family, your friendships, your safety.
- 17:29Listening, open communication.
- 17:31Then we move up to number three, self
- 17:32-esteem.
- 17:34Focus on achievement, positive self-image, being the
- 17:38best.
- 17:41Basically security, competence, productivity, and efficiency.
- 17:49Security is different than safety.
- 17:52Safety is making sure I'm okay.
- 17:54And security is just keep learning about what
- 17:58you, can share or not.
- 18:02That can be something physically.
- 18:04So there's a lot of parts to security.
- 18:06So that's where that comes from.
- 18:08We get into four of the triangle, consciously
- 18:10evolving, transformation, autonomy, accountability, freedom, courage,
- 18:15responsibility, and innovation.
- 18:17Most people do not get past step four,
- 18:21just to be quite honest with you.
- 18:23Then you move on to step five, which
- 18:26is self-expression.
- 18:27Meaning and purpose, authenticity.
- 18:31A lot of people wrestle with this because
- 18:34they're copying other people.
- 18:35They try to imitate everything.
- 18:36So they don't really exhibit who they really
- 18:40are.
- 18:41Integrity, inner alignment, purpose, creativity, clarity, and transparency.
- 18:48You can't just move through these triangle layers
- 18:50like one, two, three.
- 18:51Number six, connection, community involvement.
- 18:55Making a difference, collaboration, empathy, environmental awareness.
- 18:58These are things like charity, volunteering, helping people.
- 19:03I think that's a very important thing to
- 19:06understand.
- 19:07When we help others, we feel good, okay?
- 19:12It's a boomerang effect.
- 19:14That's probably the best thing I can tell
- 19:18you, is that it's about the fact that
- 19:22when you do something good, it comes back.
- 19:25Even if you did something bad, it would
- 19:26come back.
- 19:26So you wanna do good, right?
- 19:28The more you can do good, the more
- 19:30that little boomerang, if you don't know what
- 19:31a boomerang is, so a boomerang has been
- 19:33around for many years, but just to help
- 19:36you, if you said, John, what is a
- 19:37boomerang?
- 19:39A boomerang is a curved, flat, wooden piece.
- 19:44Them people call it a tool.
- 19:46It was used by the indigenous Australians for
- 19:49hunting.
- 19:50When thrown correctly, it spins and returns to
- 19:53the thrower.
- 19:56Figuratively, it means an action or a statement
- 19:59that unexpectedly could be backfired, but it also
- 20:02could come back in a good light, okay?
- 20:07And so when we hear that, oh my
- 20:09gosh, watch what you're doing, because it's gonna
- 20:10boomerang.
- 20:11People think about it in the negative sense,
- 20:12but I think we need to look about
- 20:13it in the positive sense.
- 20:14Do something good, and then somebody is gonna
- 20:16boomerang back to help you.
- 20:18I think those are important things that a
- 20:20lot of people don't really understand or realize.
- 20:24Boomerangs can be good, right?
- 20:29And so boomerangs help you reclaim your time
- 20:34with powerful things like emails, meeting schedule tools,
- 20:39okay?
- 20:41A boomerang, again, has been around for a
- 20:46very, very long time.
- 20:49An Egyptian boomerang from the archeological museum is
- 20:56still around to see.
- 20:57And a boomerang is not small.
- 21:01It's pretty big.
- 21:04In some cases, it's about basically the one
- 21:08part, the smallest part of the boomerang, maybe
- 21:10less than 3.9 inches, okay?
- 21:13From the tip to tip.
- 21:15And the largest over it would be about
- 21:2171 inches in length.
- 21:24That's a lot, right?
- 21:31Over six feet.
- 21:35And so boomerangs have been used, they were
- 21:38thrown at animals such as kangaroos, some of
- 21:41the oldest rock art in the world.
- 21:44We learned from the indigenous Australian rock art.
- 21:47And so the thing about a boomerang is
- 21:50that whenever you throw it properly, it always
- 21:52comes back to you.
- 21:56And so a lot of people don't really
- 21:59understand it.
- 21:59But when I say something's gonna boomerang back,
- 22:02people always assume it's gonna be negative, but
- 22:04I'm here to tell you, it's not always
- 22:05negative.
- 22:06If you put out good energy, good energy
- 22:09is gonna come back out and it's going
- 22:12to find you.
- 22:13So do something nice to somebody else and
- 22:16you're gonna feel the positive wrath of that,
- 22:19okay?
- 22:19What we focus on is what happens, guys.
- 22:22I think that's important to understand.
- 22:24So here, ladies and gentlemen, is your takeaway
- 22:27if you didn't know what it was, okay?
- 22:30You do not need to fit into every
- 22:34room.
- 22:36You don't.
- 22:37If you think you do, you're gonna be,
- 22:40first of all, disillusioned and you're gonna be
- 22:43very unhappy with life.
- 22:52I think that's an important thing to note
- 22:55about that, okay?
- 22:59Important to know what could happen and why
- 23:02things could happen a very certain way.
- 23:05And that certain way is something that a
- 23:08lot of people, I feel, I feel they
- 23:10just, they get lost with that concept.
- 23:16And that's something that many people here don't
- 23:20understand.
- 23:22What you focus on attracts more into your
- 23:26life.
- 23:26So again, you don't need to fit in
- 23:27every room.
- 23:28You need to find or create the room
- 23:32where you truly belong.
- 23:34A lot of times I help groups and
- 23:36they say, oh, I gotta attract everybody.
- 23:37No, you don't.
- 23:38You need to attract the right people into
- 23:40your group that align with your mission, your
- 23:43core values and what you stand for.
- 23:45And the fastest way to do that is
- 23:49by mastering what, guys?
- 23:50Your focus, your focus.
- 23:54I think that's an important thing to understand.
- 23:58And maybe you don't realize that.
- 24:01You don't realize why that's happening, okay?
- 24:04But it's important to understand what that's about
- 24:09and maybe what pathway you're going down.
- 24:12So the fastest way to do that is
- 24:14by mastering your focus.
- 24:15What you focus on is what you become,
- 24:18really simple.
- 24:19Because ladies and gentlemen, when your focus is
- 24:22clear, your actions align, right?
- 24:29You come into your groove.
- 24:31You come into your own space.
- 24:33When your actions align, your confidence grows.
- 24:39I bet that was a shock.
- 24:41And if your confidence grows, things are gonna
- 24:43change for you.
- 24:46Things are going to change for you.
- 24:49I think that's a very important thing to
- 24:52actually understand.
- 24:58And when your confidence grows, belonging follows.
- 25:08So I focus, right?
- 25:15I then get confidence.
- 25:18And once I get confidence, I feel as
- 25:22though I belong.
- 25:25Many people I know, all different ages, they
- 25:30knock themselves out to try to fit in.
- 25:33We don't need to fit in.
- 25:36We need to belong.
- 25:38And if you're not belonging, well, you're not
- 25:40with the right group.
- 25:41You're not with the right crowd.
- 25:43I mean, that's just the easiest thing to
- 25:44me to tell you.
- 25:46Maybe you wanna be in that group because
- 25:48you think it's the way to be.
- 25:49But I gotta tell you guys, that may
- 25:51not be the best thing for you.
- 25:53It might not.
- 25:56When we push into the door and the
- 25:59door doesn't open on its own, I don't
- 26:02think that's supposed to be.
- 26:04Ladies and gentlemen, I take this opportunity right
- 26:07now on this Friday to thank you personally
- 26:10for joining me here on Inspirations For Your
- 26:13Life.
- 26:13You can, of course, view this show again
- 26:17and other episodes as well as more of
- 26:19my short form and long form content by
- 26:21visiting, what is it guys?
- 26:23Believemeachieve.com.
- 26:25Who am I in case you forgot?
- 26:26Sure.
- 26:27I'm John Seymour, a serial entrepreneur, author, and
- 26:30a plethora of other things.
- 26:31And I am reminding you right now that
- 26:34your life is shaped by what you choose
- 26:36to focus on.
- 26:39So let's be mindful of what we're choosing
- 26:43to focus on because when we're mindful, the
- 26:48things that we want to show up in
- 26:49our life will start showing up.
- 26:54That's a very interesting thing, guys.
- 26:58When we're mindful, a lot of people rush
- 27:02to mindfulness because they're like, oh my gosh,
- 27:03I have to do this, I have to
- 27:04do this, I have to do that.
- 27:13I think that's an important thing to note,
- 27:20okay?
- 27:23An important thing to note.
- 27:25If we don't note that, we might get
- 27:26a little bit lost and that can harm
- 27:34some people, right?
- 27:38It can harm some people because they don't
- 27:39necessarily know why something is a certain way.
- 27:43But I'm here to tell you guys that
- 27:46it is possible when you focus on the
- 27:54right thing, okay?
- 27:59So I hope you guys have a great
- 28:00rest of your evening or day and I'll
- 28:01catch you guys real soon.
- 28:03And start belonging.
- 28:06Belong, don't try to fit in.
