Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / This is your money! Former Reps message to Americans as Trump spends big on vanity projects
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Smoil continues for President Trump's vanity projects, specifically for the
- 0:04Speaker 1: now drained of Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool. The president claimed
- 0:08Speaker 1: that a social media post yesterday that the pool quote
- 0:11Speaker 1: so badly damaged by deranged vandals that was capitalized has
- 0:16Speaker 1: been emptied as the massive slash gets repaired. This comes
- 0:20Speaker 1: after his story on the size of the alleged gash
- 0:23Speaker 1: keeps changing, with no evidence to back up his claims,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and to make matters worse, reporters sent to the pool
- 0:30Speaker 1: empty pool say they have seen nothing to match Trump's allegations.
- 0:35Speaker 1: In fact, a Washington Post analysis also finds the peeling
- 0:39Speaker 1: of the lining was probably caused by application flaws. They
- 0:43Speaker 1: used satellite imagery and everything to come up with that.
- 0:46Speaker 2: The resource Susan.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Wild, former Democratic the Congresswomen of Pennsylvania's joining us, as
- 0:52Speaker 1: well as Will Summer, senior reporter at the Bulwark. As
- 0:57Speaker 1: you can tell by the way I read that intro,
- 0:59Speaker 1: this well, this, this story just delights me to know.
- 1:03Speaker 1: And why is the president, of all the things that's happening,
- 1:08Speaker 1: why is he still blaming quote deranged vandals for doing
- 1:15Speaker 1: something that anybody who watched what happened could have told
- 1:20Speaker 1: this is what's going to happen.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I mean, let's go back to the start of this.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I mean, Joe Biden had this planet an expensive plan
- 1:25Speaker 2: to actually repair the reflecting pool, repair it. Trump paint
- 1:28Speaker 2: it blue exactly. Trump comes in and says, we can
- 1:30Speaker 2: do it a lot cheaper. We'll just paint it. Now,
- 1:32Speaker 2: anyone who knows anything knows you can't just paint something
- 1:34Speaker 2: to fix it. But they did it. And I think
- 1:36Speaker 2: this is just a concrete example of Trump failing, you know,
- 1:39Speaker 2: And that's why it's upsetting so much. He's had to
- 1:40Speaker 2: invent this, this whole alternate universe about you know, the
- 1:43Speaker 2: vandals with the giant knives or what have you.
- 1:45Speaker 4: And the thing is is that this is a silly
- 1:51Speaker 4: story that delights, but also there is a serious aspect
- 1:55Speaker 4: to this, which is that the President of the United
- 1:57Speaker 4: States and the lawyers under his tutelage have gone after
- 2:04Speaker 4: people and charged at least one person with an actual crime.
- 2:08Speaker 4: So you have this former Olympian who was walking by,
- 2:11Speaker 4: who apparently pooled at at some of as a lot
- 2:15Speaker 4: of people did because it was floating at the top,
- 2:17Speaker 4: pulled off a piece of it. He is still charged
- 2:20Speaker 4: at this point it does not appear that those charges
- 2:23Speaker 4: have been dropped. But talk about how you have a
- 2:27Speaker 4: president who does focus on silly crap and then uses
- 2:31Speaker 4: that focus and weaponizes it. It gets his own people.
- 2:34Speaker 3: It's really just amazing to that former olympian who was
- 2:38Speaker 3: charged and is still under arrest. It's not a funny
- 2:42Speaker 3: story to him, and it's really affect you know, things
- 2:45Speaker 3: Trump does affect people's lives every single day, and the
- 2:49Speaker 3: story fades and we stopped thinking about it, but the
- 2:51Speaker 3: person is still dealing with the repercussions of it. This
- 2:54Speaker 3: reminds me, you know, every swimming pool owner in America
- 2:57Speaker 3: with a backyard swimming pool is thinking to themselves, oh,
- 3:00Speaker 3: this isn't the end of the story, because you know,
- 3:03Speaker 3: it's just one repair after another with anything like that.
- 3:06Speaker 3: But this is just classic Trump to be focusing on,
- 3:12Speaker 3: first of all, something like an alleged, you know, person
- 3:16Speaker 3: who cut a hole in the in the lining when
- 3:20Speaker 3: we've got this war in Iran that's costing billions of
- 3:24Speaker 3: dollars and lives and so forth, and the trivia he
- 3:29Speaker 3: can't the trivia is important to him is the big picture.
- 3:32Speaker 3: That's the really scary thing. I mean, usually presidents don't
- 3:36Speaker 3: think about trivia. They have people that think about trivia.
- 3:39Speaker 3: He doesn't, but he does.
- 3:40Speaker 2: He loves us.
- 3:42Speaker 4: He seems more obsessed with the trivia stuff than anything else.
- 3:44Speaker 3: It's easier for him to grasp.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Well, like if you.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Read regime change, like there are so many stories Laura
- 3:51Speaker 4: about the President focusing on basically remaking, not just DC
- 3:54Speaker 4: with the White House that Caroline Levitt like caught him
- 3:57Speaker 4: with like super glue, supergloing and applicating things. Then, I mean.
- 4:03Speaker 5: He loves this and he wants to leave his mark.
- 4:05Speaker 5: He wants to be remembered beyond, you know, after he dies.
- 4:10Speaker 5: We also know he's very obsessed with his mortality, and
- 4:12Speaker 5: I think that that's part of why he's obsessed with
- 4:14Speaker 5: these projects. But will, I do want to play this
- 4:18Speaker 5: soft for you. Where the Interior Secretary was asked Secretary
- 4:22Speaker 5: Burgham about their allegations of vandalism, take a listen.
- 4:28Speaker 6: It didn't peel off. There was there was there is vandalism.
- 4:31Speaker 6: There was box cutters. There have been seven arrests. There
- 4:35Speaker 6: was people literally trying to destroy part of a monument.
- 4:38Speaker 6: The reflecting pool is not just a pool on the wall.
- 4:41Speaker 6: It is part of the Lincoln Memorial And if anybody
- 4:44Speaker 6: says that they're going to go and vandalize that, it's
- 4:46Speaker 6: no different than if someone was throwing.
- 4:48Speaker 3: You're one hundred percent sure that what happened with the
- 4:51Speaker 3: liner was vandalism.
- 4:52Speaker 2: You can prove it?
- 4:53Speaker 5: Well, yeah, absolutely so, Burgham there is saying yes, we
- 4:58Speaker 5: can prove it. But this administration has a track record
- 5:02Speaker 5: that once they go into court, their cases often fall apart.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Well, I mean that they couldn't even get the story
- 5:07Speaker 2: about the guy throwing the sandwich at the National Guards.
- 5:10Speaker 2: They couldn't get that in dieted for a while.
- 5:13Speaker 1: You know.
- 5:13Speaker 2: One thing that's worth mentioning here is they've had the
- 5:15Speaker 2: FBI response team out looking at the pool. Now, could
- 5:18Speaker 2: the FBI do they have a better use of their time?
- 5:20Speaker 2: I would say so. And I think you're right that
- 5:22Speaker 2: ultimately this thing is gonna have a lot of trouble
- 5:24Speaker 2: in court. I mean, this former olympian is going to say,
- 5:27Speaker 2: you know, my hand was dry or something along those lines.
- 5:29Speaker 2: I mean, I think there's a lot of arguments that
- 5:31Speaker 2: he could make.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Or he could say, do y'all see a hole on
- 5:34Speaker 4: the ground, like we're all looking at the ground.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I'm still there's no hole.
- 5:38Speaker 1: I can't go get over. Secretary Bergham saying there weren't
- 5:41Speaker 1: box cutters, but you know how you have to dig
- 5:44Speaker 1: go down deep anyway, congress Woman, he's not only messing
- 5:48Speaker 1: He the president is not only messing with the reflecting
- 5:51Speaker 1: pool and super gluing gold applicat is all over the
- 5:55Speaker 1: Oval Office, turning into his Siegfried and Roy National Museum.
- 6:00Speaker 1: But he's putting his face on a commemorative passport that
- 6:05Speaker 1: you can get here at the passport. I'm getting to
- 6:08Speaker 1: the coin in a minute. Go to the passport because
- 6:10Speaker 1: people need to see this. It's a real thing where
- 6:14Speaker 1: people His face is there on there. It is based
- 6:19Speaker 1: on the on the passport. Now let's show the gold
- 6:23Speaker 1: coin he's putting his face on. And now just listen
- 6:28Speaker 1: to the President talking about sharing his thoughts. I'm being
- 6:32Speaker 1: on the gold coin. This is from an interview on
- 6:35Speaker 1: Fox News on Wednesday.
- 6:38Speaker 6: Your face is now gonna be on a coin.
- 6:40Speaker 2: It looks like from the Treasury Department. Yes, what do
- 6:42Speaker 2: you think about that?
- 6:43Speaker 5: There's very honored. It's cute.
- 6:44Speaker 1: It's not a bit picture, but it's very cute.
- 6:47Speaker 5: They gave me a coin that's very unusual from what
- 6:49Speaker 5: I ad.
- 6:51Speaker 4: I love the fake shock who me.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I'm so honored.
- 6:54Speaker 4: I can't believe they would do.
- 6:55Speaker 3: This for someone like me.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Not a bad picture. Lord, have mercy, congresswomen, just hold forth.
- 7:03Speaker 3: All I can say is, does he not understand how
- 7:07Speaker 3: unpopular dollar coins are that everybody thinks are quarters And
- 7:13Speaker 3: you know, it's just going to be one of those
- 7:15Speaker 3: relics of our past and no time at all. And
- 7:19Speaker 3: he takes all this. It says a lot about his
- 7:23Speaker 3: his narcissism, I don't know, or his level of insecurity.
- 7:27Speaker 3: You know. I mean, maybe to go together, but I
- 7:32Speaker 3: can't even imagine. And then as we were just saying,
- 7:34Speaker 3: to pretend to be honored by something that he's literally
- 7:37Speaker 3: put into play himself. You know, it's just it's it's ludicrous.
- 7:41Speaker 3: And I have one thing to say to the taxpayers.
- 7:44Speaker 3: This is your money. This is your money, not just
- 7:47Speaker 3: the commemorative coin, but the nonsense with the reflecting pool,
- 7:51Speaker 3: the ballroom, everything else, the super glue we used to
- 7:54Speaker 3: put something up in the White House. You know, it's
- 7:57Speaker 3: just it's crazy, and people are struggling, and here we've
- 8:01Speaker 3: got a president that's focused on this kind of thing,
- 8:04Speaker 3: and it's just mind boggling.
- 8:06Speaker 1: And I argue he's doing it because he knows history
- 8:09Speaker 1: will not be kind to him, so he wants to
- 8:11Speaker 1: make sure that he is not forgotten
- 8:12Speaker 5: Before right, A coin, a passport, a triumphal arch, his
- 8:18Speaker 5: name on airport,
