- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37If God said thou shalt not fornicate, you can't just go
- 0:39move in with somebody because you say, well, when women we're
- 0:42in love and we're going to get married, but then get married
- 0:45and then move in and listen, I'm not standing here acting like I
- 0:48haven't committed that sin. That was me.
- 0:54When you know better, you do better.
- 0:56You can repent, you can turn around, you can change.
- 1:01When you know the Holy Spirit prompts you and lets you know
- 1:04that what you're doing is wrong, you can turn from that sin and
- 1:08play by the rules. Wow, that's pretty rare.
- 1:11Pastor Lewis was just very vulnerable in sharing his own
- 1:15struggles and living in obedience to God's Word.
- 1:18And Pastor Lewis also said when you know better, you do better.
- 1:23Would to God that this would actually be the case for each of
- 1:27us as followers of Jesus when we come into a better awareness of
- 1:31what God's Word teaches. May each of us be people who
- 1:35obey what we learn. And honestly, that's the risk of
- 1:40listening to teachings like this.
- 1:42Once you've heard, you're accountable.
- 1:44Now here's Pastor Lewis in second Timothy chapter one.
- 1:48We have today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:52Therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ
- 1:59Jesus. Be strong in the grace that is
- 2:01in Christ Jesus. So once again, Paul makes it
- 2:04clear to Timothy. Timothy, I know that you've been
- 2:08a little timid, sometimes a little fearful.
- 2:11We talked about that earlier in chapter 1.
- 2:13He's been a little fearful, a little timid.
- 2:15We also know that Timothy, his health wasn't all that great.
- 2:19You know, Paul had told him a while back, look, I know your
- 2:22stomach's a little, you know, a little bad.
- 2:24So take some wine for your stomach.
- 2:25His health is not that great. And then on top of that, he's
- 2:28young. So Timothy really needed a lot
- 2:31of encouragement. And he had a church that was
- 2:34right in one of the most Pagan cities in the world in Ephesus.
- 2:40And he was the pastor of that church.
- 2:43So he had to let Timothy know. Timothy, you're not going to be
- 2:45able to lean on your own strength, brother.
- 2:48So be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
- 2:55Be strong in the grace that is in him.
- 2:58That grace is not only unmerited favor for Timothy that he would
- 3:02be able to be in a place to be able to do this ministry or it's
- 3:07not just the fact that he's saved that we're all saved by
- 3:09grace. It's not even just that, but to
- 3:13be in the grace, to be strong in the grace that is in Christ
- 3:18Jesus. That grace is also the
- 3:20enablement for Timothy to be able to do all that the Lord has
- 3:25called him and assigned him to do your ministries.
- 3:29Whatever it is that God has given you to do your ministry,
- 3:33you'll never be able to fulfill it.
- 3:35If you try to depend on your own strength and your own power,
- 3:39you'll never be able to do it. You're going to get out, you're
- 3:42going to give out, you're going to get frustrated.
- 3:44We've all done it. We've all done it.
- 3:46You get frustrated, you know you have to deal with some
- 3:49opposition that can wear you out.
- 3:54We have tons of pastors all the time that's giving up the
- 3:57churches because they can't deal with it anymore.
- 4:00And if you're trying to do this in your own strength, I don't
- 4:03care what your ministry is, you will not be able to do it if
- 4:07you're dependent on your own strength, your own wisdom, your
- 4:11own logic, your own knowledge. You need the grace that is in
- 4:16Christ Jesus. You need the grace that's in
- 4:20Christ Jesus. Pray for that grace, that
- 4:22enablement that gives us what we need to do the ministry.
- 4:27So he's saying to Timothy and these things, verse 2 and the
- 4:31things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit
- 4:35these to faithful men. And you know what?
- 4:38I love that because when you go back and really look at what
- 4:41Paul is talking about, these things that you heard from me.
- 4:44Well, let's look at first of all, who did Paul get it from,
- 4:48right? Who did Paul get it from?
- 4:50If you go to the book of Galatians, because you see one
- 4:54of the things that we have to learn is that the source of what
- 4:59is given to you or what is said to you is just as important as
- 5:03what is said to you. Kids got that down already.
- 5:07Kids got that down. If you have more than one kid, I
- 5:10guarantee you, you've heard this before.
- 5:13Johnny, cut off the TV and do your homework.
- 5:16Who said Everybody can relate to that, right?
- 5:21You got kids you can relate to that.
- 5:23Who said It's time to come in now It's time for The Who said?
- 5:29It's always Who said? Because kids understand that the
- 5:33authority is not in what's being said.
- 5:35The authority is in who's saying it.
- 5:38If it's just my brother that's saying it, I'm ignore that.
- 5:43But if they tell me mom or dad said it, OK, I'll do it.
- 5:47Who said, and that's exactly what we need to understand when
- 5:52it comes to doctrine, when it comes to the word of God, when
- 5:56we're being preached something. Who said, who said?
- 6:00Look at what he says here in Galatians.
- 6:04This is what he says here. Paul is letting Timothy know,
- 6:08just like he's letting us know that what Paul is giving to
- 6:11Timothy, he didn't just get it from man.
- 6:13See, when Paul got saved, he didn't just go right to the men
- 6:16and ask them to teach him the gospel.
- 6:18That's not what happened. Paul was taught the gospel
- 6:21directly from the revelation of Jesus Christ himself.
- 6:24Look at what it says here in Galatians chapter one, verse 11.
- 6:27But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which
- 6:31was preached by me is not according to man, verse 12 For I
- 6:36neither received it from man nor was taught it, but it came
- 6:40through the revelation of Jesus Christ.
- 6:43So Paul's saying what I'm giving to you, Timothy.
- 6:47I got it from Jesus Christ. This is legit.
- 6:50This is legit, this is for real. You don't have to worry about
- 6:54questioning it. So this is what I want you to
- 6:57share with other people. So now we go back here to Second
- 7:00Timothy chapter 2 right there in verse 2.
- 7:03And he says, and the things that you heard from me among many
- 7:07witnesses, commit these things to faithful men who will be able
- 7:13to teach others also, not just to men.
- 7:16Don't just commit them to men, but commit them to faithful men.
- 7:20Commit them to other men who will handle this word faithfully
- 7:24and who will handle it reverently.
- 7:27Other men who were faithful men who were seeking the Lord,
- 7:31faithfully seeking the Lord themselves, men who were sitting
- 7:35under the Word, men who are receiving and being fed the Word
- 7:39just as much as they're being taught the Word.
- 7:42It is so important to be in ministry and to continue to sit
- 7:46under and be fed the Word of God and be fed the Word of God.
- 7:52You know there's times when your hunger needs to be fulfilled and
- 7:55your thirst needs to be quenched for the Word.
- 7:57So this is a faithful man. This is a faithful man or
- 8:01faithful woman and we have great teachers here.
- 8:04We have great teachers that we have men who come here and teach
- 8:07on Wednesday nights that that are just spirit filled women who
- 8:10are teaching on Sundays, Spirit filled.
- 8:14So many opportunities where the Word of God is being given out
- 8:18in the same form and the right keep in the form of it and
- 8:22keeping the pattern of it is being given out and that word is
- 8:25also being given to others. Others are being taught.
- 8:28Others are being taught because there's faithful men that are
- 8:31receiving the word. If I am not ministering one
- 8:37Sunday, or if I'm not ministering on a Wednesday
- 8:40night, man, that is such an opportunity for me to come and
- 8:43sit and receive because God still wants to speak to me.
- 8:50I can't teach kids. I can't teach anybody if I'm not
- 8:53being fed myself. I have to be fed.
- 8:56So he says give it to faithful men who will be able to teach
- 8:58others also. And that's able to teach doesn't
- 9:01just mean able to communicate it able to teach also means able to
- 9:04learn, able to learn or willing to learn, even more important,
- 9:09willing to continue to learn. Then he goes on verse three.
- 9:14You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier.
- 9:18So he's saying here, if you look at it and we put it all in
- 9:21sequence, we're saying here he says be strong in the grace that
- 9:25is in Christ Jesus and the things that you have heard among
- 9:29many witnesses, commit thou to faithful men.
- 9:33So now from this point in the next couple verses, he is going
- 9:37to explain to us what are some of the characteristics of a
- 9:41faithful man, a faithful pastor, a faithful servant, a faithful
- 9:46Christian. What are some of the
- 9:47characteristics? And the first one, it's going to
- 9:50give you 3 back-to-back. And the first one is here, right
- 9:54here in verse three. He says you therefore must
- 9:57endure hardship as a good soldier.
- 10:02As a good soldier, you must endure hardship as a good
- 10:05soldier. What is a good soldier?
- 10:07A good soldier is someone, a soldier that is committed to his
- 10:12mission. He's committed to his mission.
- 10:15He is somebody who understands what he's called to do and will
- 10:19fulfill that mission at all costs.
- 10:23Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, as all of those, they all had
- 10:29missions, they all had purpose and they had to be faithful to
- 10:33that mission, be faithful to that purpose that helps keep our
- 10:37country safe. And he's saying to Timothy,
- 10:41Timothy, they must be able to endure hardships as a good
- 10:44soldier. That endure hardships mean to be
- 10:46able to share in the hardships, be able to take their place with
- 10:51the hardships, you know, take their share of it, of the
- 10:54hardship as a good soldier. And then he goes on, He says,
- 10:57here no one engaged in warfare and tangles himself with the
- 11:01affairs of this life. And it's interesting because
- 11:06there he's basically looking at, let's separate what it means to
- 11:09be a civilian from what it means, OK, to be in the
- 11:12military. If someone's in the military,
- 11:15they cannot live the way they live in the military like they
- 11:18do in civilian life. Just like you can't live both
- 11:22lives if you're a Christian, you can't live like the world, can't
- 11:25live like the world. You can't be entangled in the
- 11:28things of the world. And that entanglement means to
- 11:32be twisted. It means to be twisted or to be
- 11:35caught up. We can't be caught up or twisted
- 11:38in the things of the world. We can't be involved in things
- 11:41that's going to take our focus or our time away from the
- 11:44gospel. If they do start to take our
- 11:47time away from the gospel, that's a work of the enemy
- 11:50trying to defeat us, trying to cause us to become ineffective.
- 11:55We can't be both in the world and be a soldier for the Lord at
- 11:59the same time. There's too many entanglements.
- 12:02There's a lot of entanglements. Drugs is an entanglement.
- 12:05Alcohol is an entanglement. Being overly involved and get
- 12:08rich schemes are entanglements. Being involved in the cares of
- 12:12the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the lust of other
- 12:15things, as it says in Mark 419, those things are entanglements
- 12:21and it really brings us into perdition and destruction.
- 12:24It destroys us and it destroys our testimony.
- 12:26Paul said, Timothy, you can't be involved in that.
- 12:29Got to be separate from that. And at the end of that same
- 12:32verse it says that he may please him who enlisted him as a
- 12:36soldier. Jesus said at one time that I
- 12:38only do what pleases my father. I only do what pleases my
- 12:42father. I don't waste time on things
- 12:44that don't please my father. I know who sent me, and I'm here
- 12:47to do the will of him who sent me.
- 12:50This is what Jesus says over and over and over again, and that's
- 12:54where we have to be. We have to do what pleases Jesus
- 12:57Christ. The one who called us, the one
- 13:00who saved us, the one who justified us, the one who will
- 13:04glorify us ultimately is Jesus Christ.
- 13:06And we have to do what pleases Him and not what pleases the
- 13:11world. And then in verse 5 here it
- 13:13says, and also now this is the second illustration.
- 13:16And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned
- 13:20unless he competes according to the rules.
- 13:23So he's now talking about comparing the Christian Walker
- 13:26being a pastor to actually being an athlete.
- 13:29There's a lot of disciplines in being an athlete.
- 13:32They're disciplined about their workout.
- 13:34They're disciplined about what they eat.
- 13:35They're disciplined about what they do and how they do it.
- 13:39And they got to play by the rules at this particular time
- 13:42they were in the Olympic Games. You know, and Greeks and Romans
- 13:46are very, very enthusiastic about sports, very enthusiastic.
- 13:51And that's, and Paul uses the athletic or a sports analogy
- 13:55quite a bit because they are, but they're also very stringent
- 14:00about the rules. If you think about how many
- 14:02people get disqualified from the Olympics, from breaking rules,
- 14:07it happens all the time. Sometimes they disqualify before
- 14:10they even get to the event. Sometimes they disqualify while
- 14:12they're in the event because they break the rules.
- 14:16And Paul was saying to Timothy, we got to play by the rules,
- 14:18man. And this is Timothy.
- 14:22This is the rule book. This is the rule book.
- 14:25We play by these rules. I'm sorry, but we can't make up
- 14:28our own rules in ministry. We can't make up our own rules.
- 14:32If God said thou should not commit murder, then we can't
- 14:35think that we can kill babies because we can cover our sins.
- 14:38If God says that marriage is between a man and a woman, then
- 14:42we can't think that we can go grab somebody with the same sex
- 14:44and go live with them because we say we love them.
- 14:47That's not the rules. That's not the rules.
- 14:51If God said thou shalt not fornicate, you can't just go
- 14:54move in with somebody because you say when women, we're in
- 14:57love and we're going to get married, but then get married
- 14:59and then move in and listen, I'm not standing here acting like I
- 15:03haven't committed that sin. That was me.
- 15:09When you know better, you do better.
- 15:11You can repent, you can turn around, you can change.
- 15:15When you know the Holy Spirit prompts you and lets you know
- 15:18that what you're doing is wrong, you can turn from that sin and
- 15:22play by the rules. And Paul's telling Timothy,
- 15:25Timothy, play by the rules, man. Don't disqualify yourself by not
- 15:29playing by the rules. So then the third illustration
- 15:32is here in verse 6. The hard working farmer must be
- 15:35first to partake of the crops. And that's true in a couple
- 15:39sense because you have the ministry of the financial
- 15:42aspect. You know the labor is worthy of
- 15:44his wages. So that's one aspect of it.
- 15:47But the other aspect of it is just in the word itself.
- 15:51As we read and study the Word, we're first partaker of the
- 15:54things that the Lord is saying to us.
- 15:56When we come and we teach here from the sacred destiny, we
- 15:59share the Word of God with you. And when you get convicted,
- 16:03that's because we got convicted first as we were studying it.
- 16:07We were convicted first. We were the first partake of
- 16:10that conviction. The Lord dealt with us in
- 16:14studying it. So we are first partaker of it.
- 16:17And then here he also says here in verse 7.
- 16:20Now consider what I say and the Lord will give you or in some
- 16:24verses may say, may the Lord give you understanding in all
- 16:27things, but it says here that Lord will give you understanding
- 16:30in all things. Meditate on what was said
- 16:33Timothy, think about all those things that I just said and then
- 16:36I love how he finishes up here. That section of it in verse 8
- 16:40when he says remember Jesus Christ, remember Jesus Christ.
- 16:46King James Version says remember that Jesus Christ, but in a
- 16:51number of the other versions says remember Jesus Christ.
- 16:57And that's a spot that you can stay on for quite some time
- 17:01because in ministry, sometimes Jesus Christ gets lost because
- 17:07we get busy. We get busy, we get involved, we
- 17:11get over involved, and then we start thinking the ministry's
- 17:14about us, that the ministry is us.
- 17:16I own the ministry and we're doing this now.
- 17:18We're no longer doing it for Jesus Christ, but I'm doing it
- 17:20now for results. I'm doing it now because I like
- 17:23the way it feels. I'm doing it now because pride
- 17:25is starting to kick in when people say, oh, you're doing
- 17:28such. I mean, we got to remember Jesus
- 17:31Christ. This is about Jesus Christ.
- 17:35Jesus said, if I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto myself.
- 17:39And we all have to be careful with that.
- 17:41We all do. That's just something that the
- 17:44enemy uses to try to get us derailed and try to get us to be
- 17:49deflected from what it is that we're supposed to do.
- 17:53So the Lord is saying that we have to be humble and remember
- 17:55Jesus Christ. Look how he did ministry.
- 17:59But it says here Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised
- 18:03from the dead according to my gospel.
- 18:06Paul said, listen, I'm doing all of this because I am sure that
- 18:10almost goes back there to verse 12 and chapter 1.
- 18:14When he says I am sure, I know, I'm persuaded of the one that
- 18:19I'm doing this for. He is the Messiah.
- 18:22He is the one who is of the seed of David.
- 18:24He's the one who was raised from the dead just like it was
- 18:27prophesied. He's the Messiah.
- 18:30I'm not doing this for somebody that's going to take me to a
- 18:33dead end. He's able to keep my life that
- 18:37I've given to him. He's able to keep it.
- 18:40So he says, remember Jesus Christ.
- 18:43And then he goes on. He says, according to my gospel,
- 18:46verse 9, for which I suffer trouble as an evil doer, even to
- 18:51the point of chains, but the word of God is not chained.
- 18:56Paul said I suffer and I go through all these persecutions,
- 19:00these afflictions, these beatings, being in the deep,
- 19:04almost drowned in, you know, I go through this when I go to
- 19:08cities, They're constantly, you know, men are are taking
- 19:11different oaths to kill me. I go through all that for the
- 19:17gospel because of what I know to be true.
- 19:21And even though they may chain me, they may put me in prison
- 19:25and they may stop me from traveling around.
- 19:28But the word is not chained, It's not constricted, It's not
- 19:33confined over. In Acts 28, around verse 30 or
- 19:38so, it talks about how Paul, he was in jail, but he was given
- 19:42the freedom because he got favor from God.
- 19:45So he was given the freedom to continue to receive and to teach
- 19:48people who were coming to him while he was in Rome.
- 19:52And that word was going out to other people and then from other
- 19:55people, and then to other people and then to other people.
- 19:57The Word of God is not confined. It is not in chains.
- 20:02There are people who are sitting in hospital beds, laying in
- 20:04hospital beds, sick. But when people come in, they're
- 20:08not talking about their condition.
- 20:10They're not talking about how bad they feel.
- 20:12They're sharing the gospel. They're sharing the gospel of
- 20:15Jesus Christ. And that word is going out,
- 20:18nurses. And you know our brother Ron,
- 20:20who end up passing of cancer, Ron, you go to visit him, you're
- 20:24getting the gospel, you're getting the gospel.
- 20:27You get a hello, maybe an embrace, but you're getting the
- 20:29gospel. And everybody who comes in that
- 20:32room, every nurse, they come into that room.
- 20:35And there's other people that I've visited from here that when
- 20:38someone walks in that room, I don't care if it's a doctor, a
- 20:40nurse, a receptionist, they are hearing something about the word
- 20:44of God and about the goodness of Jesus Christ.
- 20:47The word is not confined. Paul said it's not confined.
- 20:52And in verse 10, he says, and then he gives the reason why he
- 20:56endures these things. He says therefore I endure all
- 21:00things for the sake of the elect or the chosen, that they also
- 21:07may obtain salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
- 21:15Paul says I do all this, I suffer all these things, I take
- 21:21all these beatings, I take all the persecutions.
- 21:25I'm dragged before council, pro councils, I'm dragged before
- 21:29kings, governors beaten, taking slashes back, totally busted
- 21:37open from being flogged. But Paul said, I do this for
- 21:44those who need to hear the gospel, the ones who will hear
- 21:48the gospel and believe. There are people out there that
- 21:52will hear this gospel and believe.
- 21:55We don't know who they are. We don't know who we are.
- 21:58We walk down the street, we go into a grocery line, we pick up
- 22:01the phone, we walk through our neighborhoods.
- 22:05Lord gives us a passion to share the gospel.
- 22:08We don't know if the people that we're sharing the gospel with is
- 22:11going to be one of those who will believe.
- 22:13We don't know. It's not our place to know that
- 22:17God knows. We're just supposed to forecast
- 22:21it. We're supposed to share it.
- 22:23We put it out there and let the Holy Spirit does its work.
- 22:28Let the Holy Spirit does it work.
- 22:30He takes what we shared and it goes into the heart and the Holy
- 22:34Spirit brings it to fruition. And they believe, Paul said.
- 22:38I'm doing it for them. I'm doing it for them so that
- 22:43they can obtain salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal
- 22:48glory. Remember, the gospel is a
- 22:51promise of life. So this eternal glory that he's
- 22:55talking about is the coming Kingdom in which we will have no
- 22:59more dying, no more sickness, no more crying.
- 23:04He's going to wipe away every tear, not even night, because
- 23:09God Himself is going to be our light.
- 23:12We have it in Christ Jesus, Amen.
- 23:15So Paul is encouraging Timothy as we are encouraging you state,
- 23:22of course, don't give up. Don't give out what you're
- 23:26doing. Regardless of whether you think
- 23:29that you see results or whether you think that nothing's
- 23:32happening at all. Continue to do what God has
- 23:35called you to do. Stay faithful to the Word.
- 23:38Stay faithful to the calling, to the mission, to the Co mission.
- 23:44God is at work and He's using you.
- 23:47He's using you, He's using me, He's using all of us to make a
- 23:52difference according to His purpose.
- 23:57Thank you for tuning in to Living Waters of Grace with
- 24:00Pastor Louis Harrell. We're currently in the books of
- 24:03First and Second Timothy. Some of the things included in
- 24:07these New Testament letters from Paul are that the young and
- 24:11newly established Pastor Timothy was being encouraged to hold
- 24:16fast to what was true. He was challenged to confront
- 24:20and address the false teachers that were rising up.
- 24:23He was also reminded to accept his calling to the ministry with
- 24:27gratefulness and to address the happenings going on in the
- 24:31Ephesian church. Paul was imparting his
- 24:35experience and knowledge to the next generation.
- 24:39Timothy was receptive to learning and gleaning what he
- 24:42could from Paul's wisdom. This is how it should be in
- 24:46ministry across multiple generations.
- 24:49Those who have lived a little more life should be open to
- 24:52sharing their successes and also things they've learned along the
- 24:56way. That we're not a wind.
- 24:59The younger generations coming up can learn and appreciate much
- 25:03from those ahead of them, and perhaps avoid some of the same
- 25:06pitfalls that their mentors work through mentoring.
- 25:11It's a beautiful relationship. When the hearts are in the right
- 25:15place to learn and grow. You trust that you're in a
- 25:18community where this is happening.
- 25:20Older ones providing advice and wisdom, and each side learning
- 25:25and growing from one another. This certainly was the case for
- 25:29Paul and Timothy as they were comrades for the sake of the
- 25:33gospel. For more information on where
- 25:36this teaching came from, go to calvarychapelonline.com.
