Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Marathon for two is the public event in between the
- 0:04Speaker 1: Men's Olympic Marathon and the Women's Olympic Marathon. It's one
- 0:07Speaker 1: of the first times ever the public have been invited
- 0:09Speaker 1: to be on the course, the same course in between
- 0:13Speaker 1: two events. I want to know why on earth people
- 0:16Speaker 1: are traveling from around the world to do this, Like,
- 0:18Speaker 1: what's there? Why for being there? Because I think there's
- 0:20Speaker 1: going to be some really incredible stories.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Hey everyone, Emily Abadi here. You are listening to another
- 0:40Speaker 2: installment of our limited series on Hurdle called Going for It.
- 0:45Speaker 2: It's a monumental time for women in sport, as more
- 0:48Speaker 2: and more eyes are rightfully paying attention to her in
- 0:51Speaker 2: pursuit of what lights her on fire. Leading up to Paris,
- 0:54Speaker 2: I'm ringing conversations to the forefront from women who will
- 0:57Speaker 2: be involved in this year's games, from athletes to journalists
- 1:02Speaker 2: and today's guest, perhaps your favorite Peloton instructor. I am
- 1:07Speaker 2: talking about the one and only Beck's gentry. You know
- 1:10Speaker 2: her from her teaching at Peloton and perhaps her new
- 1:15Speaker 2: gig as a podcaster for New York Roadrunners Set the
- 1:19Speaker 2: Pace podcast presented by Peloton. In today's episode, Bex talks
- 1:24Speaker 2: about what she's getting up to in Paris, her gig
- 1:27Speaker 2: with NBC, and how she feels to be towing the
- 1:31Speaker 2: line for marathon Poor two, which, for those of you
- 1:34Speaker 2: that don't know, an evening start on the exact same
- 1:37Speaker 2: route and on the same day as the men's Olympic event.
- 1:41Speaker 2: In just a few hours before the woman's event, Bex
- 1:44Speaker 2: will be running the Olympic marathon course.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Now.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Because she is a dear friend of mine, we talk
- 1:50Speaker 2: about many other things as well, but I absolutely loved
- 1:53Speaker 2: having her back in the studio and I'm honored to
- 1:57Speaker 2: bring this conversation to the feed. Make sure you're follwing
- 2:00Speaker 2: along with us over on social It's at Hurdle podcast.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I am over at Emily you body and with that,
- 2:05Speaker 2: let's get to it. Let's get to hurdling.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Today.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I'm sitting down with Beck's gentry. You know her and
- 2:19Speaker 2: love her as a peloton instructor. She's also now a
- 2:22Speaker 2: podcaster set the Pace podcast.
- 2:24Speaker 3: How's that going for you?
- 2:26Speaker 1: Phenomenal?
- 2:26Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 2:27Speaker 1: Like you, my girl. You get to sit down and
- 2:29Speaker 1: talk with people who you adore, who inspire you on
- 2:33Speaker 1: a daily basis, who you are starstruck by, Like it's
- 2:37Speaker 1: never ending, and you get to learn and admire. It's great.
- 2:41Speaker 3: I love that.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I love to hear that you're loving that because it
- 2:43Speaker 2: is a new thing, and new things can be a
- 2:45Speaker 2: bit overwhelming as well.
- 2:47Speaker 1: It took some time, I think, to find my flow,
- 2:49Speaker 1: but I'm definitely in it now. Yeah, definitely. Like hold back, brob,
- 2:53Speaker 1: I got this.
- 2:54Speaker 3: She's coming for you. She's coming for you.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Do you feel like getting a quaint with podcasting was
- 3:01Speaker 2: easier or more difficult than getting comfortable being in front
- 3:04Speaker 2: of the camera at peloton?
- 3:06Speaker 1: Oh? Good question. Easier, I think, but because I didn't
- 3:12Speaker 1: have to look in ten different directions whilst running, right,
- 3:14Speaker 1: that's probably was always the hottest thing.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it's helpful that you don't have to run wall podcasting.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you wait, you wait, She's like, just.
- 3:22Speaker 2: You wait till they give me a microphone and you're
- 3:25Speaker 2: training with all of these people for the New York
- 3:27Speaker 2: City Marathon. Yeh, She's like, it's loading. This isn't foreshadowing
- 3:31Speaker 2: now we know. Well, I'm so excited about your new
- 3:34Speaker 2: venture and always I love being able to sit down
- 3:36Speaker 2: with you because you're in my bud and we're here
- 3:39Speaker 2: today to talk about what's going on for you in
- 3:43Speaker 2: this chapter of heading to Paris.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Yeah, wow, wow, I can't believe it's finally here.
- 3:48Speaker 1: It's finally here. It is. We're like two weeks away.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Three weeks away? Where are we? I know it's weeks
- 3:55Speaker 1: two weeks Yeah, oh e they I so kind of
- 3:59Speaker 1: get my head around the fact that I'm going to
- 4:00Speaker 1: be going to Paris for the Games. We'll be able
- 4:04Speaker 1: to see and witness greatness in front of us and
- 4:09Speaker 1: absorb it.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Yeah, like it's absurd.
- 4:11Speaker 1: I lived in London when the Games were on and
- 4:14Speaker 1: I didn't go, and I'm slightly scattered crowds, so yeah,
- 4:19Speaker 1: I'll have to back up a little bit at times.
- 4:21Speaker 1: But the good thing is the main thing I will
- 4:23Speaker 1: be doing by myself will be the marathon Port two,
- 4:27Speaker 1: and I'm moving so that's fine. I'm just moving through
- 4:29Speaker 1: the crowd.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Okay.
- 4:31Speaker 2: So let's kind of break down the different things that
- 4:33Speaker 2: you will be doing while in Paris. You just mentioned
- 4:36Speaker 2: the marathon Port two. Talk to me a little bit
- 4:39Speaker 2: about that. How you're feeling.
- 4:40Speaker 1: So here's the thing my mindset at the beginning of
- 4:43Speaker 1: this year, unbeknownst to most people on the other side,
- 4:47Speaker 1: of my camera world, I Instagram and Peloton was changing
- 4:52Speaker 1: my mindset to just getting it done, to being in
- 4:55Speaker 1: that we're just going for a run. There is not
- 4:58Speaker 1: any pace pressure on me anymore. And I think I
- 5:02Speaker 1: subconsciously accepted that after I had Tallula, because so many
- 5:08Speaker 1: things were complete, like I think I may have run
- 5:10Speaker 1: my fastest marathon at the Olympic Trials, I had my baby,
- 5:14Speaker 1: I put my body through all this other stuff and
- 5:17Speaker 1: everything felt good, and I was just like, you know what,
- 5:19Speaker 1: pace doesn't define me. That's when I came up with
- 5:21Speaker 1: my mantra, forward is a pace. It doesn't matter. As
- 5:23Speaker 1: long as you're moving forward, great, whatever the speed is,
- 5:27Speaker 1: that's your speed. And so I've had to let that
- 5:31Speaker 1: sit with me. This year Tokyo Marathon was the first
- 5:33Speaker 1: time that I had to just be like, you're running,
- 5:36Speaker 1: You're doing the distance, it's not about the time. That
- 5:39Speaker 1: was really beautiful for me. So Marathon Part two is
- 5:44Speaker 1: the public event in between the Men's Olympic Marathon and
- 5:47Speaker 1: the Women's Olympic Marathon. It's one of the first times
- 5:50Speaker 1: ever the public have been invited to be on the
- 5:53Speaker 1: course the same course in between two events. I mean,
- 5:57Speaker 1: if you know much about the Olympics. It's a very
- 6:02Speaker 1: high security, very closed off event. This very much still is.
- 6:07Speaker 1: But I think it's wow that normal people get to
- 6:09Speaker 1: come and experience what the men have just run and
- 6:12Speaker 1: the women will run the next morning. So I'm going
- 6:14Speaker 1: to be doing that with NBC. I will be out
- 6:16Speaker 1: on the course, running, talking, stopping, chatting, experiencing the tiny
- 6:24Speaker 1: six point two at night with people from all over
- 6:29Speaker 1: the world. I mean, I know, for my pearls on
- 6:30Speaker 1: leaderboard there's people from the US who are flocking over
- 6:33Speaker 1: there to see it. There's different distances. I think it's
- 6:35Speaker 1: marathon down to five k that they're doing. So that's
- 6:39Speaker 1: going to be the kind of the big bulk of it.
- 6:42Speaker 1: The rest of it's going to be some social opportunities,
- 6:44Speaker 1: talking to people, collaborating with NBC's other platform on her turf,
- 6:49Speaker 1: and then there will be some commentary from me in
- 6:52Speaker 1: some capacity on the women's marathon event, which is.
- 6:55Speaker 3: My goodness, wow, so much to unpack here.
- 6:58Speaker 2: First and foremost, I am obsessed with this mantra, for
- 7:02Speaker 2: it is a pace I too, am certainly confident that
- 7:06Speaker 2: my fastest marathons are behind me. That is entirely fine
- 7:10Speaker 2: and great with me. And I say that firmly. You
- 7:13Speaker 2: also said it firmly. But talk to me a little
- 7:15Speaker 2: bit about how you got to this place where you
- 7:18Speaker 2: believe it, because I think that there is a hope
- 7:22Speaker 2: or a or a feeling you want to embrace this
- 7:25Speaker 2: knowing that it's like this isn't what I'm meant to
- 7:28Speaker 2: do anymore in terms of I know that running to
- 7:33Speaker 2: run fast isn't what feels good for me anymore. Running
- 7:36Speaker 2: fast in its definition, as it evolves with me as
- 7:39Speaker 2: I progress in my life, is one thing.
- 7:42Speaker 3: But I know that running.
- 7:44Speaker 2: The way that I did five years ago does it
- 7:46Speaker 2: just doesn't feel right for me. Talk to me about
- 7:49Speaker 2: your journey about getting to this place where you feel
- 7:52Speaker 2: confident in that sentence, because I know it wasn't an
- 7:54Speaker 2: easy one.
- 7:55Speaker 1: No, it was humbling. The journey to feel telling it,
- 8:01Speaker 1: going to agreeing with it was huge. And I say
- 8:07Speaker 1: that because I had to learn grace. And I think
- 8:11Speaker 1: that me before Tallula was really mean to myself. I
- 8:16Speaker 1: punished myself in many ways of past things in my life,
- 8:22Speaker 1: and I would use running as such a release of
- 8:24Speaker 1: like you screwed up that in the past. You've got
- 8:27Speaker 1: to keep running. And I think it's not It's probably
- 8:31Speaker 1: not talked about very much, but I think runners, when
- 8:33Speaker 1: we push ourselves, we have some really dark conversations, and
- 8:37Speaker 1: I'm sure people discuss it with their therapists. I certainly do,
- 8:40Speaker 1: and we all unpack those things privately, and they're probably
- 8:43Speaker 1: not things you want to discuss. Like you and I
- 8:45Speaker 1: wouldn't sit down with a glass of wine and I'll
- 8:46Speaker 1: be like, hey, guess what I thought about when I
- 8:48Speaker 1: was running today, and you'd be like, I'm gonna leave.
- 8:52Speaker 3: I would never leave you, never.
- 8:55Speaker 1: But it's that like, we use a lot of and
- 8:58Speaker 1: I'm gonna say this word, please take it in the way.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I mean weapons to push ourselves and challenge ourselves and
- 9:06Speaker 1: get really uncomfortable. And I think, as I referred to
- 9:11Speaker 1: earlier after the trials, after Tallula, there were so many
- 9:14Speaker 1: boxes that were ticked in my mind and I felt
- 9:17Speaker 1: this like this joy, this happiness, and I no longer
- 9:22Speaker 1: felt this need to push myself to that limit anymore,
- 9:26Speaker 1: because when I got that uncomfortable, I just wanted to
- 9:31Speaker 1: get off the tread or finish my runt and come
- 9:33Speaker 1: back and cuddle my baby, or sit down, or I
- 9:36Speaker 1: think about the trials and be like, no, I don't
- 9:38Speaker 1: want to go back to those five am, tears on
- 9:41Speaker 1: the tread, tears afterwards, tears outside. I don't need to
- 9:44Speaker 1: go back there. I am okay with that box being
- 9:48Speaker 1: ticked and that box having been ticked in twenty twenty one,
- 9:51Speaker 1: and it doesn't need to come back. And that filled
- 9:54Speaker 1: me up so much in my post natal journey and
- 9:58Speaker 1: now even my training for Tokyo. In my brain, I
- 10:02Speaker 1: was like, you got to train harder, you got to
- 10:03Speaker 1: train harder. And I didn't and I didn't and I didn't.
- 10:06Speaker 1: I didn't really do speed work. I did distance. And
- 10:10Speaker 1: that was part of the coming to the agreement with
- 10:13Speaker 1: myself of just keep moving, finish twenty six point two,
- 10:20Speaker 1: don't worry about the time, keep going forwards. And I
- 10:24Speaker 1: tell you, when I got to twenty four miles, I
- 10:26Speaker 1: mean you and I were out there and it if
- 10:31Speaker 1: somebody had told me I could leave that race at
- 10:33Speaker 1: twenty four miles and there would be no consequences. I'd
- 10:36Speaker 1: never feel any regret and everything would be sort of deleted.
- 10:40Speaker 3: I would have done it, amen, I would have done it.
- 10:42Speaker 3: It's a hard day, yeah, I want it out.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I was. I couldn't have given a teeny tiny rats
- 10:47Speaker 1: bum that there was only two miles left to go.
- 10:50Speaker 1: I want it out, And at that point I was
- 10:53Speaker 1: just like, I don't care about the time anymore. This
- 10:56Speaker 1: is great and it was so Yeah, it just it's
- 10:59Speaker 1: taken a while, but now I know, like going to
- 11:02Speaker 1: Paris running that race, I'm not going to look at
- 11:05Speaker 1: my watch training for my next challenge. I can't look
- 11:09Speaker 1: at my watch because we all know to run a
- 11:12Speaker 1: fast marathon, To run any marathon is depleting on the body.
- 11:17Speaker 1: To train really hard, to run faster and faster and
- 11:19Speaker 1: faster consecutively is very very challenging on the body. And
- 11:25Speaker 1: some people do it. I've done it, like most of
- 11:27Speaker 1: my marathons work consecutive PR after PR. I'm not. I'm
- 11:31Speaker 1: not game for that any Yeah.
- 11:32Speaker 2: I love I love looking at your smile as you
- 11:35Speaker 2: talk about this because it has been a journey, yes,
- 11:38Speaker 2: but also you seem so at peace with it now
- 11:41Speaker 2: and that makes me so genuinely happy for you. And
- 11:45Speaker 2: it's definitely something that's so relatable because I'm sure a
- 11:47Speaker 2: lot of people listening to this, whether or not it
- 11:50Speaker 2: has to do with running, right, we are always competing
- 11:53Speaker 2: with ourselves. We're always dealing with the way that we
- 11:56Speaker 2: speak to ourselves, and so it is up to each
- 11:59Speaker 2: of us in individually to not only be mindful of
- 12:02Speaker 2: what that conversation looks like, but then own up to
- 12:05Speaker 2: it when you realize that maybe we should be shifting
- 12:09Speaker 2: the tone here.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 12:11Speaker 2: I also am really excited about you talked about stopping
- 12:15Speaker 2: and talking to people and doing all these social things.
- 12:18Speaker 3: So really, like, looking at the watch is a non option.
- 12:20Speaker 1: It's a non option because the old me would have
- 12:23Speaker 1: got incredibly frustrated about seeing a pace that I wasn't
- 12:26Speaker 1: familiar with. And I think, I obviously I want to
- 12:31Speaker 1: have the watch on because I want the GPS.
- 12:33Speaker 3: And I was going to say, so.
- 12:34Speaker 2: You want the watch on because Strabo didn't happen. Yeah,
- 12:38Speaker 2: pretty much totally.
- 12:40Speaker 1: But I also want to remember of like the course.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I want to look at that picture and be like, whoa,
- 12:45Speaker 1: I ran the Olympic marathon. Course didn't make the Olympics
- 12:48Speaker 1: a couple of years ago, irony, And here I am
- 12:50Speaker 1: out on the course. But no, I'm not going to
- 12:53Speaker 1: be trying to like steam between conversations to make up
- 12:57Speaker 1: time now at all, because I really want to have
- 13:01Speaker 1: good conversations with people. I want, genuinely I want to
- 13:05Speaker 1: know why on Earth people are traveling from around the
- 13:07Speaker 1: world to do this, Like what's their why for being there?
- 13:10Speaker 1: Because I think there's going to be some really incredible stories.
- 13:13Speaker 2: I am also interested in the mindset of running on
- 13:17Speaker 2: the Olympic Marathon course as someone who has run the
- 13:20Speaker 2: Olympic Marathon trials with the goal to ultimately run the
- 13:24Speaker 2: Olympic Marathon. We've already unpacked a little bit about the
- 13:28Speaker 2: feelings that go hand in hand with shifting the way
- 13:30Speaker 2: you think about your running journey right now, But do
- 13:32Speaker 2: you expect there to be emotion about the fact that
- 13:35Speaker 2: you have this opportunity and it's so different than you
- 13:38Speaker 2: ever expected.
- 13:39Speaker 1: It's funny. I sat down to start watching the new
- 13:43Speaker 1: Netflix series Sprint, which is phenomenal by the way, and
- 13:48Speaker 1: there was a lot of the footage is from Tokyo,
- 13:51Speaker 1: and that would have been sort of my race in
- 13:56Speaker 1: midst of COVID. You know, nobody around as per the trials,
- 14:00Speaker 1: So I think there will be like this, this moment
- 14:04Speaker 1: where I will allow my imagination to just probably as
- 14:09Speaker 1: I come over the finish line, you know, just to
- 14:11Speaker 1: look up and be like, this is what I could
- 14:14Speaker 1: have been like. But yeah, I'm still here, and I'm
- 14:17Speaker 1: still grateful. I'm still running, you know, three years later
- 14:20Speaker 1: after having a baby and I'm doing it. I'm still
- 14:23Speaker 1: out here. But now I'm gonna let my little fency
- 14:25Speaker 1: well just wander up for quick moments.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Hey, I think that it's so beautiful when you take
- 14:31Speaker 2: this step back and realize that this is the capacity
- 14:35Speaker 2: that it was supposed to happen for you. Yeah, and
- 14:37Speaker 2: how awesome is it that you have this opportunity to
- 14:42Speaker 2: not only run the course with so many others, but
- 14:45Speaker 2: think about that you're running this marathon course as a
- 14:48Speaker 2: representative for nb C.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Yeah, how does that feel when I say that back
- 14:54Speaker 3: to you?
- 14:55Speaker 1: Not real it's a dream come true. Ever since I
- 14:58Speaker 1: started doing come aryan broadcast for this sport that we love,
- 15:03Speaker 1: nothing feels real until I get that microphone in my hand,
- 15:06Speaker 1: until I'm sitting there actually talking. So I keep getting
- 15:11Speaker 1: my emails and credentials and all of these really exciting
- 15:15Speaker 1: things from NBC part of the team, and I'm like,
- 15:18Speaker 1: this is really happening. I'm sure you have that with
- 15:21Speaker 1: big events where you until you're in it, or even
- 15:23Speaker 1: like a vacation you've planned forever. I am the worst
- 15:27Speaker 1: person to holiday with because I'm like, it's not gonna happen.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Something's getting wrong all the way until I am landed
- 15:33Speaker 1: and at the destination. Yes, then I'm like, aed who
- 15:36Speaker 1: we are? It's fine, But I just, you know, I
- 15:40Speaker 1: just maybe that's the doubter in me, the catastrophized or
- 15:43Speaker 1: as lost and calls. It just comes out when it's
- 15:45Speaker 1: something that I really care passionately about and something that
- 15:48Speaker 1: I desperately want to happen. I'm like, know something someone,
- 15:51Speaker 1: I'm just I'm used to something getting in my way,
- 15:53Speaker 1: so I'm just going to expect that.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's tough.
- 15:56Speaker 2: That's a tough thing to befriend and then figure out
- 15:58Speaker 2: how to share out of that mindset, Right, you said
- 16:02Speaker 2: that catastrophizer.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Yes, we don't want bex the catastatizer. Now. Honestly, being
- 16:06Speaker 1: a mom's helped because you have to put on a
- 16:08Speaker 1: braith face to someone else. So like, I'm sidetracked with
- 16:11Speaker 1: Tallula running around the airport, so I'm no longer worried
- 16:14Speaker 1: about getting to where we're going. I'm worried about this
- 16:16Speaker 1: exact moment of her boarding a flight to Chicago by
- 16:19Speaker 1: accident by herself. Yeah, it's very She very much centers
- 16:24Speaker 1: me in the moment of focus.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Just running down the jet bridge heading to wherever she
- 16:29Speaker 2: decides she wants to go in any one day.
- 16:32Speaker 1: It's going to be home on the moment of like,
- 16:33Speaker 1: where's t Lula Chicago?
- 16:37Speaker 3: You need to chip her asa, I.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Said that to Austin. I think I need to put
- 16:40Speaker 1: an attack around her, like as a necklace.
- 16:42Speaker 3: We'll get her a really nice like casing for that.
- 16:45Speaker 1: It will be fine.
- 16:47Speaker 2: So, speaking of NBC, I do want to rewind a
- 16:50Speaker 2: little bit and hear about how you got involved with
- 16:54Speaker 2: working with them in the first place for so many again,
- 16:56Speaker 2: including yourself a dream opportunity. So what was it like
- 17:00Speaker 2: when this first came on your radar?
- 17:02Speaker 1: So I'm very lucky. I was introduced to the amazing
- 17:05Speaker 1: Rebecca Chapman at NBC through a dear, dear friend of mine, Robernette,
- 17:10Speaker 1: who was a writer. He's been in the industry for many,
- 17:14Speaker 1: many years, very hugely celebrated writer, and he and Becky
- 17:19Speaker 1: go back a long, long way, and he introduced us
- 17:23Speaker 1: and we got chatting, and then I went to the
- 17:25Speaker 1: trials and we met and it was a very She
- 17:29Speaker 1: knew me through Peloton, but didn't know really how to
- 17:31Speaker 1: connect with me. Molly Solomon NBC also knew me through Peloton,
- 17:35Speaker 1: and it was just it was serendipitous moment of connection
- 17:38Speaker 1: through and outside, you know, a seeming outside source bringing
- 17:42Speaker 1: us together. And she basically we sat down and she
- 17:47Speaker 1: thought up this role for me. It was like, Okay,
- 17:51Speaker 1: we're going to get you, We're going to have you,
- 17:52Speaker 1: we want you out there, we want to do something
- 17:54Speaker 1: with you. Let me come back to you, and she
- 17:57Speaker 1: did within a couple of days and was like, I've
- 17:58Speaker 1: got an idea. Would you like to do all of this?
- 18:03Speaker 1: I was like, yes, I knew you'd love to because
- 18:06Speaker 1: you're the person who can run a marathon and talk
- 18:09Speaker 1: at the same time. There are so few and far between,
- 18:13Speaker 1: right like, okay, yeah, there we go. So it was
- 18:17Speaker 1: you know, a few a few phone calls of that
- 18:19Speaker 1: disbelief of Wowja're on the floor walking down the middle
- 18:23Speaker 1: of SOHO one day when she called and like gave
- 18:25Speaker 1: me the full offer, and I was just like, there's
- 18:28Speaker 1: no one here. To tell I, like FaceTime, my mom
- 18:31Speaker 1: and dad screamed down the phone. I was like, I'm
- 18:33Speaker 1: going to Paris with NBC, like just lost it, and
- 18:37Speaker 1: it was one of those big moments.
- 18:39Speaker 2: So this isn't your first time being behind the microphone,
- 18:43Speaker 2: of course, with your time with Peloton, but then beyond that,
- 18:45Speaker 2: you've also been doing some things locally with nyr R
- 18:49Speaker 2: and beyond, So shed some insight for us on what
- 18:52Speaker 2: that journey has been like for you.
- 18:53Speaker 1: So I started the conversation came about when I was pregnant,
- 18:57Speaker 1: actually with Tallula about doing commentary for the broadcast of
- 19:02Speaker 1: the New York City Marathon, and it was just too
- 19:06Speaker 1: close to my due date to safely bring me on
- 19:10Speaker 1: as part of the broadcast team. Even though I was
- 19:12Speaker 1: fully I was like, it's fine, she's not due for
- 19:14Speaker 1: like I think it was November third, the race or
- 19:17Speaker 1: something like that, and she wasn't duetil the twelfth. I
- 19:19Speaker 1: was like, I'll be fine, thought, you don't worry about it.
- 19:22Speaker 1: She ends up coming early, so it wouldn't have been fine.
- 19:25Speaker 1: So we kind of put a pin in that conversation
- 19:27Speaker 1: and we recollected our conversation the following summer ahead of
- 19:33Speaker 1: last year twenty twenty three TCS New City Marathon, and
- 19:37Speaker 1: so I came on board with ABC seven at ESPN
- 19:40Speaker 1: to do commentary at the finish line, which was I'm
- 19:44Speaker 1: a crier and like, I'm just you know, I will
- 19:47Speaker 1: bore my eyes out on peloton and I think vaguely
- 19:50Speaker 1: emotional touching said whatever, I just cry. So there was
- 19:54Speaker 1: a lot of moments where I was like, let's got
- 19:57Speaker 1: me because I'm like especially when Alston came over the
- 20:01Speaker 1: finish line, I.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Was like, Okay, we're done.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Wait, don't We're done?
- 20:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 20:04Speaker 1: I can't be cause I'm gonna cry and I'm not
- 20:06Speaker 1: gonna be able to go back on camera. But it
- 20:08Speaker 1: was really a wow moment. And I've never been more
- 20:12Speaker 1: scared than when you know you have the producer in
- 20:17Speaker 1: your ear, you have a pa right there with you,
- 20:20Speaker 1: you have like four screens prompts. I had the big
- 20:22Speaker 1: screen going on. I was literally at the finish line
- 20:25Speaker 1: of my most emotional race and many people's most favorite
- 20:30Speaker 1: race too, and I look up and I was I
- 20:33Speaker 1: was dancing. I was so nervous. I just didn't know
- 20:35Speaker 1: what to do with myself. I was just like, oh
- 20:37Speaker 1: my gosh, I'm about to go live on ESPN. This
- 20:40Speaker 1: is a dream come true. On ABC seven Local. I
- 20:43Speaker 1: was just I was like, no, this is gonna go wrong.
- 20:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna mumble. And I look up and on the
- 20:48Speaker 1: screen everyone is starting the TCS New York City Marathon,
- 20:52Speaker 1: and literally as I look up, there is Austin Selena,
- 20:57Speaker 1: Tundae rad for Dennis who was running with them. Who
- 21:02Speaker 1: else was running that day? Oh my god? But missing
- 21:05Speaker 1: I'm sure I'm missing my colleagues. But they were all
- 21:08Speaker 1: starting together, and Austin jumped up and like high five
- 21:12Speaker 1: towards the cameraman, and I like was like, that's my
- 21:15Speaker 1: sign it's going to be okay. And it just settled me.
- 21:18Speaker 1: And it was just no one around me was familiar faces,
- 21:22Speaker 1: like the team I'd worked with, but I couldn't see them.
- 21:24Speaker 1: There was like a new pa. I didn't know this
- 21:27Speaker 1: person other than that morning, and like the New York
- 21:29Speaker 1: Road Run, his team who I knew were nowhere around.
- 21:32Speaker 1: So just that calm of seeing people you care about
- 21:35Speaker 1: love just kind of settle those butterflies. I was like,
- 21:39Speaker 1: and here we are. It couldn't have been like you know,
- 21:43Speaker 1: when you're just like timing sometimes you couldn't write it
- 21:46Speaker 1: in a better way, and it was got I mean
- 21:48Speaker 1: everybody caught that on the on the stream because people
- 21:51Speaker 1: when I got back to my phone, people were like,
- 21:53Speaker 1: oh my gosh, we saw Austin and blah blah blah
- 21:55Speaker 1: blah blah. As you came on screen, I'm like.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Oh, it is such a really beautiful, reassuring moment before
- 22:03Speaker 2: a really scary thing.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:05Speaker 1: It was.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to give some love

- 23:54Speaker 2: not unlike the nerves that come hand in hand with
- 23:57Speaker 2: chowing the starting line at a marathon, your self when
- 24:00Speaker 2: you're running, or perhaps showing up to your first day
- 24:03Speaker 2: of peloton or whatever the case may be. Right, so
- 24:05Speaker 2: many different anxiety inducing moments that you have managed to
- 24:11Speaker 2: conquer in the past. So what do you lean into
- 24:15Speaker 2: when those feelings of anxiety or nervousness naturally occur? How
- 24:21Speaker 2: do you hype yourself up to show up to difficult moments.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Honestly, I don't think I hype myself up. I really
- 24:29Speaker 1: am Like when I hear my other colleagues be like,
- 24:32Speaker 1: and I'm your hype person, I'm like, I'm not. I'm
- 24:35Speaker 1: so not anyone's hype person Like I don't. I'm like, wow,
- 24:39Speaker 1: this is such a stark comparison. But that's why we
- 24:41Speaker 1: are all in our different roles. I my, my, my,
- 24:46Speaker 1: this is my train of thought. I catastrophize first.
- 24:50Speaker 3: We start with catastical.
- 24:51Speaker 1: We start with the absolute worst case situation, and from
- 24:55Speaker 1: there I work up to best case scenario. And then
- 24:59Speaker 1: by the time I've got to best case scenario, I'm
- 25:01Speaker 1: probably started and I'm running and I completely forget because
- 25:04Speaker 1: when I start moving, everything just flashes out of my brain.
- 25:08Speaker 1: It is like that Rolodex just suddenly goes like, Okay,
- 25:13Speaker 1: let's go back and reset and restart, and I kind
- 25:17Speaker 1: of forget the anxiety. But I definitely I definitely start
- 25:21Speaker 1: with I think I think I could testrifize first because
- 25:25Speaker 1: I want to accept what could happen the worst case
- 25:28Speaker 1: that what could happen. I'm like, okay, okay, if that happens, cool,
- 25:33Speaker 1: but I'm not gonna let it happen because this is
- 25:36Speaker 1: gonna happen, and like that's my hype. Yes, that comes up,
- 25:39Speaker 1: But I'm weird and like I say this to my therapist,
- 25:44Speaker 1: they will acknowledge this as well. When I'm overwhelmed and
- 25:48Speaker 1: when I don't, like if i don't want to be somewhere,
- 25:51Speaker 1: or if I'm starting to have like really anxious thoughts,
- 25:55Speaker 1: I have this strange visualization that I do and I
- 25:58Speaker 1: don't have had it since I can remember, and it
- 26:01Speaker 1: is me solo on a US school I'm English US
- 26:08Speaker 1: school indoor basketball court, sitting on the like I don't
- 26:13Speaker 1: even know what they're called the steps where people watch,
- 26:16Speaker 1: by myself, and it's wooden and there's no one around,
- 26:19Speaker 1: there's no basketball, there's nothing, but it's a basketball court.
- 26:22Speaker 1: I know that. And I'm always just by myself and
- 26:24Speaker 1: I'm very calmly just sitting and that's my weird visualization.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I'm like, I think I've ever been in a wooden
- 26:31Speaker 1: indoor basketball court in this life, maybe in my bass life,
- 26:35Speaker 1: but I grew up in England never played basketball. Like
- 26:38Speaker 1: it's such a strange thing, but it's my calm, weird,
- 26:41Speaker 1: calm place.
- 26:42Speaker 3: So I love that for you.
- 26:44Speaker 2: I mean, hey, if you're a weird calm place is
- 26:47Speaker 2: a safe basketball gym sitting on some bleachers. I think
- 26:50Speaker 2: you're okay, right, Like, I love that visualization or that
- 26:55Speaker 2: thought process that you go through asking yourself what's the
- 26:58Speaker 2: worst thing that can happen? Because nine point nine percent
- 27:01Speaker 2: of the time, the worst thing that could happen is
- 27:03Speaker 2: typically that you're just exactly where you started. And we're
- 27:07Speaker 2: so scared about things not going to plan that we
- 27:10Speaker 2: allow that fear to fester and we idate all of
- 27:15Speaker 2: these unrealistic possibilities. But really, most of the time, the
- 27:19Speaker 2: worst thing that's gonna happen is you're exactly where you started.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Yeah, And I always say this when this is referring
- 27:25Speaker 1: to anything you trained for. Again, we're not just talking running.
- 27:28Speaker 1: I know the audience is mainly running, but whatever you
- 27:32Speaker 1: trained for, when we get to race day, we forget
- 27:36Speaker 1: the training. I do. I know you like we've had
- 27:40Speaker 1: I'm sure this conversation of like, huh, I have just
- 27:44Speaker 1: busted my behind for months weeks, and you're on that
- 27:50Speaker 1: start line and it disappears. And even as you say,
- 27:54Speaker 1: even if you get a meta off, that start line
- 27:59Speaker 1: doesn't matter because you have to remember how hard you
- 28:02Speaker 1: worked in the training. The race is a luxury. It's
- 28:07Speaker 1: a blessing that you get to be there. I say
- 28:10Speaker 1: this in my classes. It is the cherry on top
- 28:13Speaker 1: of the sprinkled icing, on top of the thousand tiered
- 28:16Speaker 1: cake with all the cream or whatever in between that
- 28:19Speaker 1: you've created. It is the teeny tiniest part of what
- 28:22Speaker 1: you should be really proud about. It's a bonus.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Yeah, so Paris is kind of the bonus right now.
- 28:29Speaker 2: If you think about the fact that you have done
- 28:31Speaker 2: so much and you got the opportunity right, And I
- 28:36Speaker 2: think that in itself is such a testament. There's so
- 28:39Speaker 2: much that again we talk about or think about, like, oh,
- 28:42Speaker 2: this could go this could happen, this could go wrong,
- 28:44Speaker 2: et cetera, et cetera.
- 28:45Speaker 3: But the fact that they came to you.
- 28:49Speaker 2: That is so special because there are so many people
- 28:53Speaker 2: they could have come to. Yeah, but they thought Rebecca Gentry,
- 28:58Speaker 2: that woman's got or something.
- 29:00Speaker 1: I don't know. I need to check if I'm Rebecca
- 29:01Speaker 1: or Beck some my credentials. I would think Rebecca because
- 29:03Speaker 1: it was all government stuff.
- 29:05Speaker 2: So yeah, all government stuff. Okay, So but back to
- 29:09Speaker 2: getting behind the microphone. You talked about your experience at
- 29:11Speaker 2: the TCS New York City Marathon, the nerves anxiety that
- 29:14Speaker 2: came with that. As you continued on throughout that day
- 29:18Speaker 2: and did more and more on camera work, you heard
- 29:21Speaker 2: the person in your ear what feelings thoughts were going
- 29:24Speaker 2: through your mind?
- 29:25Speaker 1: How can I do this better? How can I get
- 29:29Speaker 1: this opportunity again? How can I grow here? It was
- 29:33Speaker 1: so exhilarating in the moment, and it flew by, It
- 29:35Speaker 1: went so quickly, and I wanted there to be more.
- 29:38Speaker 1: And anyone who's ever done it you know it soundbites.
- 29:41Speaker 1: It's literally you work for weeks pulling this together and
- 29:45Speaker 1: you're on for less than a minute here and there,
- 29:48Speaker 1: and it's gone. And I just kept thinking, to my
- 29:51Speaker 1: oh my gosh, I cannot wait for the feedback. I
- 29:53Speaker 1: cannot wait to see how I can be better at
- 29:55Speaker 1: this because I love doing it. It sparked something really
- 30:00Speaker 1: really new in me, and I loved that feeling of Okay,
- 30:06Speaker 1: I've got to grow this. This is the seed, it's
- 30:08Speaker 1: been planted, it's being watered, and I need to just
- 30:10Speaker 1: keep watering this.
- 30:11Speaker 2: I think it's really admirable that you are looking forward
- 30:16Speaker 2: to someone telling you what to do differently, because it
- 30:20Speaker 2: shows that you have an openness not only to that feedback,
- 30:25Speaker 2: but also to the potential that could come from someone
- 30:28Speaker 2: saying something that maybe you don't want to hear. So
- 30:32Speaker 2: in that exercise, in getting that feedback, what was the
- 30:37Speaker 2: most useful for you to slow down?
- 30:40Speaker 1: I think from years of being a peloton instructor, of
- 30:45Speaker 1: having time blocks to fit certain things into, I thought
- 30:51Speaker 1: it would be quite an easy transition to be okay,
- 30:56Speaker 1: you have roughly ninety seconds to conduct this interview. It
- 31:00Speaker 1: something like, whatn't it so you the human brain? I
- 31:06Speaker 1: think we are so weird with time, like all of
- 31:09Speaker 1: us are so different. Some of us think time moves
- 31:11Speaker 1: so slowly. But again, it's kind of what excites you.
- 31:15Speaker 1: And I spoke I think too fast because I know
- 31:18Speaker 1: one of my points I had like ten seconds more
- 31:20Speaker 1: and I could have carried on. I could have I
- 31:23Speaker 1: don't know, just brought a little bit more passion or
- 31:27Speaker 1: energy into certain parts of the conversation. So that was
- 31:30Speaker 1: a really great learning of watching it back and slowing
- 31:33Speaker 1: down of I will always be told in your ear
- 31:38Speaker 1: when we're wrapping up, and worst case scenario they just
- 31:40Speaker 1: cast away, but you're always going to be told of like, okay,
- 31:42Speaker 1: we're cutting to Brittany Bell or Sam Ryan, whoever it
- 31:47Speaker 1: was at that point, okay, and a good host can
- 31:53Speaker 1: pull a conversation to an end quite quickly and concisely,
- 31:56Speaker 1: and you move on. So that was really exciting to
- 31:59Speaker 1: hear that feedback and be like, oh cool, Okay, now
- 32:00Speaker 1: I've got to really learn to have that confidence to
- 32:03Speaker 1: be talking to a stranger about something potentially deep and
- 32:06Speaker 1: interesting and just have to go, thank you so much
- 32:09Speaker 1: for your time today, We're moving on.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Yeah, very wildly different than your experience at Peloton. What
- 32:16Speaker 2: else would you say was the biggest shift from what
- 32:19Speaker 2: you're used to doing on camera.
- 32:23Speaker 1: I think having someone in my ear, yeah, because we
- 32:26Speaker 1: don't have anyone in our ears at Peloton. We have
- 32:28Speaker 1: a screen in front of us where the control room
- 32:30Speaker 1: will give us alerts if something, music, sound, something is happening.
- 32:36Speaker 1: We'll get almost safety style alerts, but we're not produced
- 32:41Speaker 1: that way. So in amongst the outside noise, in ear noise,
- 32:46Speaker 1: that in your head noise, there was a lot going on.
- 32:50Speaker 1: So the first like practice in the mornings of that,
- 32:52Speaker 1: I was like, oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa Okay,
- 32:55Speaker 1: and I mean I was. I was at the finish
- 32:57Speaker 1: line as the wheelchair race was and going in for
- 33:02Speaker 1: my second hit, and they were literally directing them on
- 33:05Speaker 1: either side. So it was like dodgems for me. I'm like, okay,
- 33:09Speaker 1: whilst being told to stand here, they're everywhere. I had
- 33:12Speaker 1: the cameraman like directing me here. So that was a lot.
- 33:15Speaker 1: It was really the looking at ten cameras that was
- 33:17Speaker 1: really overwhelming. When I started, Peloton suddenly felt like a breeze.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, very different, super different.
- 33:23Speaker 2: And also you're now speaking to a very different audience, right,
- 33:31Speaker 2: So how was that experience for you? Because when you're
- 33:34Speaker 2: at Peloton, you almost kind of know what to expect
- 33:38Speaker 2: at this point, Like you know that you're going to
- 33:40Speaker 2: have people that are your people that are hanging out
- 33:42Speaker 2: with you. Yeah, you also know that maybe there are
- 33:44Speaker 2: going to be people that don't feel as passionately about
- 33:47Speaker 2: you as your people, and okay, we've learned how to
- 33:50Speaker 2: navigate those people as well. But when you get to okay,
- 33:53Speaker 2: I'm going to be on local TV or okay, I'm
- 33:55Speaker 2: going to be on ESPN, it's a whole new can
- 33:58Speaker 2: of worms.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, it's very I think I kind of had
- 34:03Speaker 1: to almost block it out because the big difference between
- 34:07Speaker 1: the two audiences is the Paladin Peloton audience is allowed
- 34:11Speaker 1: and they will slide into your DMS if they didn't
- 34:14Speaker 1: like something, or didn't agree with something, or thought one
- 34:17Speaker 1: track was not great. And I definitely don't think ESPN
- 34:22Speaker 1: ABC seven they don't care as much. It's again, it's
- 34:27Speaker 1: a small hit amongst a very big, very loved event
- 34:31Speaker 1: in New York City. So I think it was almost
- 34:35Speaker 1: freeing for me in that respect to be like, oh, okay,
- 34:37Speaker 1: I'm not going to have so and so we learn
- 34:39Speaker 1: I'm never gonna take your class again because you played
- 34:41Speaker 1: that music. Well, not today.
- 34:45Speaker 2: I'm probably still going to watch the New York City
- 34:47Speaker 2: Marathon next year, even if BEX is doing this.
- 34:49Speaker 1: And I'm like, eh, yeah, because it's ninety seconds where
- 34:52Speaker 1: you can just go and get a cup of tea
- 34:54Speaker 1: and come back what I'm fine, Oh my god.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Well, obviously people are also tuning in to your ninety
- 35:01Speaker 2: seconds as we gear up for the Olympics. Tell me
- 35:04Speaker 2: what is it that you are most excited about feeling it?
- 35:08Speaker 1: Yeah, the buzz Austin just got back from Paris himself
- 35:12Speaker 1: for fashion Week and he said the feeling, the vibe
- 35:15Speaker 1: in Paris was so different, and he's been going there
- 35:18Speaker 1: for ten years at this time, and he's like, it
- 35:20Speaker 1: was just it was a bit more like edgy, Like
- 35:23Speaker 1: on Edgley, there was a bit more like WHOA, what's
- 35:25Speaker 1: going on? What's going on? So I'm really excited to
- 35:29Speaker 1: have this old city filled with modernity and success of
- 35:36Speaker 1: this current generation of athletes.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Sport you're most excited to watch?
- 35:41Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. Honestly, is the marathon? I really am.
- 35:45Speaker 1: I think it's a it's a somewhat new field. I'm
- 35:49Speaker 1: really excited to see Rose Harvey on the UK team,
- 35:51Speaker 1: see what she does. She's just her story is great her.
- 35:56Speaker 1: I've been following her training closely on Instagram and I
- 35:59Speaker 1: really stoked to see her fly.
- 36:02Speaker 3: See her fly.
- 36:03Speaker 2: If you backs, aside from the marathon, had to participate
- 36:06Speaker 2: in any Olympic sport.
- 36:07Speaker 3: What would it be?
- 36:08Speaker 1: Dressage?
- 36:10Speaker 2: Oh wow, we did not expect that one. Okay, tell
- 36:15Speaker 2: me about your why for dressage.
- 36:17Speaker 1: I really wanted to enjoy riding horses when I was younger.
- 36:20Speaker 1: My sister ride horses. I just never loved it. I
- 36:26Speaker 1: didn't trust them at all, but I would religiously go
- 36:29Speaker 1: and watch the dressage, and I am wowed by the outfits,
- 36:35Speaker 1: the humans where the braiding of the horse is Maine,
- 36:38Speaker 1: and their tail and I just I just the little
- 36:41Speaker 1: heel flakes. Oh my god, I just would love to
- 36:43Speaker 1: be up there in my cute little suit, waking my horse, dance.
- 36:47Speaker 3: In my cute little suit.
- 36:49Speaker 2: You know what I don't want to be doing in
- 36:51Speaker 2: a cute little suit is being in Paris.
- 36:54Speaker 3: No.
- 36:54Speaker 2: The heat, well right now it's cold. So I've been
- 36:57Speaker 2: told that it's been about seventy degrees or something.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yesterday it was sixty four and raining. So if
- 37:03Speaker 1: it stays that way, heavens are happy. Because Paris and
- 37:08Speaker 1: Europe in the summer is I mean, for the Europeans,
- 37:11Speaker 1: they're fine, they understand and deal with it. But for
- 37:14Speaker 1: the one hundred and twenty track and field US team
- 37:18Speaker 1: and all the other athletes, but for sure the outdoor
- 37:21Speaker 1: teams here, they're going to be like ish. I know.
- 37:24Speaker 3: I know.
- 37:24Speaker 2: When I was I was looking for like where I
- 37:26Speaker 2: was going to stay and everything. The first thing was
- 37:28Speaker 2: just making sure it had air conditioning because a lot
- 37:31Speaker 2: of the homes in Paris do not.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Have any air Airbnb is now yeah wow, yeah, yeah,
- 37:36Speaker 1: it's going to be very interesting. But again, like what
- 37:39Speaker 1: Tokyo was really hot, wasn't it as well? And people
- 37:42Speaker 1: were really struggling. So the trials for the marathon this
- 37:45Speaker 1: year super hot day. Yeah, so maybe people are climatized.
- 37:49Speaker 1: We don't know.
- 37:50Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 37:52Speaker 2: Actually part of this series, I had Italian Minsburg, who's
- 37:55Speaker 2: a reporter for the New York Times, come in and
- 37:57Speaker 2: sit down and talk about what her experience has been
- 38:00Speaker 2: like reporting covering over three different Olympic Games.
- 38:04Speaker 3: Now this will be her fourth, I believe, and her.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Most recent article that went live on the Times is
- 38:10Speaker 2: about the fact that this could be one of the
- 38:13Speaker 2: hottest Olympics in recent history.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Oh yikes, here we go, here we.
- 38:17Speaker 3: Go, here we go.
- 38:19Speaker 2: Outside of you yourself running the marathon. When it comes
- 38:21Speaker 2: to the possibility of commentating on the women's marathon the
- 38:26Speaker 2: following day, do you feel as though this would be
- 38:29Speaker 2: different than your previous experience or where are we sitting
- 38:32Speaker 2: with that?
- 38:33Speaker 1: Yeah? I do. I think it will be very different.
- 38:38Speaker 1: I feel well this year, I know on track and field,
- 38:41Speaker 1: the US women's have completely outshone the men. Yeah, and
- 38:49Speaker 1: I think going into the I'm going to talk about
- 38:52Speaker 1: the marathon because that's my speciality. Going into this race specifically,
- 38:57Speaker 1: there is high hopes we have a really strong roster
- 39:02Speaker 1: of women up there, so I think it's going to
- 39:05Speaker 1: be very interesting to follow them because they don't have
- 39:10Speaker 1: a huge career behind them. There's a lot of the
- 39:12Speaker 1: time at TCS New York City Marathon, for example, you
- 39:16Speaker 1: are talking about the leaders with their decade plus of
- 39:20Speaker 1: running history behind them and their accolades, and like, oh,
- 39:23Speaker 1: someone is just on the you know, ten thousand meters
- 39:26Speaker 1: cross country, but you know, right now we're not looking
- 39:30Speaker 1: at people who have a huge like list of medals
- 39:34Speaker 1: behind them, which is really thrilling to think, Wow, this
- 39:38Speaker 1: is a whole new realm of athletes coming through the works.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Like I remember when it was the Nadal Federer, Djokovic
- 39:48Speaker 1: always at the top of the game. Then you rewind
- 39:51Speaker 1: and you're like, oh, yeah, it was sampress agacy, and
- 39:54Speaker 1: you just think about these waves of athletes coming through,
- 39:57Speaker 1: and the goat goes through. You've got like Lewis Hamilton,
- 40:00Speaker 1: Max Mustappen in Formula one, who's the new ones? Coming
- 40:04Speaker 1: rising up right now? Is it Lando or is it Charles?
- 40:06Speaker 1: Like is it? So that's what thrills me of. Where
- 40:10Speaker 1: are they the trials? We're just a wow moment to
- 40:13Speaker 1: see like Dakota coming through. I was standing right next
- 40:16Speaker 1: to her coach and he was like gripping the air
- 40:20Speaker 1: of like She's gonna do it, and just this this
- 40:24Speaker 1: moment was so huge for them. So I can't even
- 40:27Speaker 1: imagine this next level. And so I hope getting to
- 40:31Speaker 1: speak to them, their coaches, their teams, whoever we can
- 40:34Speaker 1: talk to, and then watch them do it on the
- 40:36Speaker 1: day in amongst athletes from all over the world, athletes
- 40:40Speaker 1: who I have not watched in the trials, like obviously
- 40:44Speaker 1: the UK team have paid very close attention to, but
- 40:47Speaker 1: I haven't seen. I don't know much about the other athletes.
- 40:51Speaker 1: And all of these women are so FIUs and you know,
- 40:55Speaker 1: big shout out to Alison Felix for making the moms
- 40:58Speaker 1: out there more comfortable at the Olympic village this year.
- 41:01Speaker 1: And there's so much change that's happening for women in
- 41:04Speaker 1: sport that's working towards making the experience for them smoother,
- 41:09Speaker 1: therefore allowing them to perform to their fullest potential and
- 41:13Speaker 1: this could be the first year we really see that shine.
- 41:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Oh, I'm so excited not only to watch that event,
- 41:19Speaker 2: but just all of these women that are truly breaking
- 41:23Speaker 2: barriers and doing things in ways that we've really never seen.
- 41:27Speaker 3: Yeah, we're seeing.
- 41:28Speaker 2: I mean, every other day at the trials was personal
- 41:33Speaker 2: best to make the team, personal best to make the team.
- 41:35Speaker 2: And that is truly remarkable and definitely gives you some
- 41:40Speaker 2: goosebumps thinking about what's going to happen when we really
- 41:42Speaker 2: get on that big stage.
- 41:44Speaker 3: Oh yeah, oh my gosh. I am also really amped
- 41:47Speaker 3: for the marathon.
- 41:48Speaker 2: I think the thing that is so interesting about that
- 41:52Speaker 2: race specifically is the trials are so quote unquote early
- 41:56Speaker 2: comparatively so far, so it's almost as these athletes get
- 42:01Speaker 2: to go into their own little hidden cocoon for a
- 42:04Speaker 2: while and then emerge and show what they've been doing
- 42:07Speaker 2: over the last handful of months, whereas within track and field,
- 42:11Speaker 2: all of those athletes were just on display and it's like, okay,
- 42:14Speaker 2: three weeks, time to turn it around again.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, they are like peak, They're peaking right now
- 42:19Speaker 1: and peaking again in a few weeks. But the Olympic
- 42:23Speaker 1: marathon trials. We're back in February. It's so long and
- 42:26Speaker 1: we've seen the girls came down to do the mini
- 42:29Speaker 1: ten k, the Masteracar Mini ten k here in New York,
- 42:32Speaker 1: so there was a great you know, we got to
- 42:35Speaker 1: see them. That's it. It's really like oh wow, as
- 42:41Speaker 1: you say, they've got into this like recovery from the
- 42:43Speaker 1: trials and then back into a training block.
- 42:45Speaker 3: Yeah, stopped training.
- 42:49Speaker 2: They are not yet on the side of the coin
- 42:50Speaker 2: that we talked about, which we're graduating. No, yeah, are graduating.
- 42:55Speaker 3: We're moving on. Well, I'm so excited not only for
- 42:58Speaker 3: you and.
- 42:59Speaker 2: This major opportunity, but also selfishly that we get to
- 43:02Speaker 2: be there together.
- 43:03Speaker 3: It's going to be great.
- 43:05Speaker 2: What would you say right now outside of the working
- 43:08Speaker 2: aspect of being in Paris?
- 43:10Speaker 3: Is there anything you have to do while you're there?
- 43:12Speaker 1: I want to have a glass of red wine a
- 43:14Speaker 1: cute Well, last time I went, I was pregnant.
- 43:16Speaker 3: Oh my goodness.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Yeah, And it was the first time Austin and I
- 43:19Speaker 1: went together.
- 43:20Speaker 4: Oh so the City of Love and we had a
- 43:24Speaker 4: beautifully romantic dinner in one of his favorite restaurants, teeny
- 43:29Speaker 4: tiny restaurant, and we'd talked since we met about going
- 43:33Speaker 4: to Paris and sipping on a nice glass of wine together,
- 43:36Speaker 4: and we didn't get so not that he's coming on
- 43:37Speaker 4: this trip, So you and I have with lots of
- 43:40Speaker 4: friends and send him a picture.
- 43:42Speaker 2: I'm like secretly like yes, oh my god, Well I'm
- 43:46Speaker 2: so amped.
- 43:47Speaker 3: I can't wait to drink red wine with you.
- 43:49Speaker 2: I know that most everyone listening to this probably already
