- 1:46Speaker 1: All right, once again returning to the airwaves here in
- 1:51Speaker 1: this Memorial Day, A very very happy Memorial Day. Yes
- 1:55Speaker 1: it is. It is Monday. It is Memorial Day, at
- 1:58Speaker 1: least on the calendar. And I was chatting with Ron
- 2:02Speaker 1: Tolman over at the VFW last night and he once
- 2:07Speaker 1: again reminded me that the parade, the Memorial Day parade,
- 2:12Speaker 1: is going to be this coming Friday morning, which is
- 2:17Speaker 1: the apparently the true Memorial Day, which I think is boy,
- 2:25Speaker 1: it's slipping my mind what it's called. But anyway, it
- 2:29Speaker 1: is going to be a Friday morning, and I want
- 2:32Speaker 1: to make sure that you know that and spread the
- 2:34Speaker 1: word on that will be there. We'll be streaming live
- 2:37Speaker 1: and just like we did last year, and I can't wait.
- 2:40Speaker 1: It's going to be a great day. Hopefully mother nature
- 2:43Speaker 1: is going to cooperate. She did a little bit yesterday
- 2:46Speaker 1: for about thirty forty five minutes the sun came out
- 2:50Speaker 1: and then it was right back to the the clouds
- 2:54Speaker 1: and the cold and even some rain. But man, it
- 2:58Speaker 1: is beautiful out this morning. The sun is shining. It
- 3:01Speaker 1: is a gorgeous day, at least here in the Granite City.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And to drive in this morning and see that huge
- 3:08Speaker 1: American flag flying high and pry proud above North Main
- 3:13Speaker 1: Street here and Barry was just awesome. Awesome. So, speaking
- 3:18Speaker 1: of the cold, you have probably heard me on the
- 3:22Speaker 1: air in the past talking about Arctic Bliss and what
- 3:27Speaker 1: they do the ice baths, and you've probably heard me
- 3:35Speaker 1: give testimony to this not only at the Green Mountain
- 3:39Speaker 1: Reggae Festival last summer, but also just recently within the
- 3:44Speaker 1: last couple of weeks. It seems probably a little bit
- 3:47Speaker 1: longer than that over at Washington County Mental Health's Wellness
- 3:51Speaker 1: Wednesday on Summer Street, where Arctic Bliss showed up with
- 3:55Speaker 1: this huge trailer with this portable ice bath set up
- 4:02Speaker 1: and did this right on Summer Street, and myself had
- 4:07Speaker 1: a slaton and a few others partook, and once again
- 4:15Speaker 1: there were new people that I was able to witness
- 4:19Speaker 1: not only get in the ice bath, but also I
- 4:25Speaker 1: got to witness and experience them open their eyes not
- 4:30Speaker 1: just from the shock, but open their eyes to the
- 4:34Speaker 1: medicinal benefits to ice bathing. And I got to see
- 4:40Speaker 1: them see the light and say, oh my god, this
- 4:45Speaker 1: is something that I may need to explore a little
- 4:49Speaker 1: bit further. This is something I may want to consider
- 4:53Speaker 1: incorporating into my life in some way, not necessarily every day,
- 4:59Speaker 1: but it was the wow factor and it was huge.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Our young Van der Slut is my guest this morning.
- 5:08Speaker 1: He is the owner. You're the man behind Arctic Bliss.
- 5:15Speaker 1: You are everything behind Arctic Bliss. Brother. Welcome to aired Out.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Thank you, JD. It's wonderful to be here. It's great
- 5:24Speaker 2: to see you again. It was so nice to meet
- 5:27Speaker 2: you at the at the Reggae festival. It was last summer,
- 5:31Speaker 2: last summer.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Yeah it was last summer, and I.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Don't remember what month it was, but yeah.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know, and Matt does a great job
- 5:38Speaker 1: bringing in some, for lack of a better term, non
- 5:44Speaker 1: traditional type of vendors.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Correct.
- 5:47Speaker 1: And when I saw you, I was first of all,
- 5:50Speaker 1: I didn't know really anything about you or Ice. Or
- 5:56Speaker 1: Ice met we had never met, and I was like,
- 5:59Speaker 1: what is this all about? And I came up to
- 6:02Speaker 1: you and and I think I was watching Bessie do it,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and I'm like, I was intrigued right off.
- 6:12Speaker 2: She did great as well, she did was right. She
- 6:16Speaker 2: went into the zen mode and quickly, yeah, quickly, Yeah,
- 6:19Speaker 2: it was great, But you got there.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I did it great, I did, but it was.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it was fantastic, believe it.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Listen, you know I was not in any in any
- 6:34Speaker 1: way prepared to do something like this. It wasn't anticipating
- 6:40Speaker 1: in any of it. And when I got into that
- 6:45Speaker 1: ice water, it, I mean, it took all of my
- 6:52Speaker 1: breath away. But there was this this hesitation beforehand where
- 6:58Speaker 1: I said, oh my god, I'm not sure if I.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Can do this, and that doesn't really go away. I
- 7:06Speaker 2: still have that, after having gone in hundreds of time.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Every time I stand in front of the ice bath,
- 7:12Speaker 2: I go, eh, maybe i'll do it tomorrow, because you know,
- 7:18Speaker 2: it's an ice bath, not a hot tub, so it's
- 7:21Speaker 2: but then overcoming that thought and saying all right, I'm
- 7:27Speaker 2: just gonna go in and I know it's gonna be fantastic,
- 7:30Speaker 2: And then just going in and that overcoming that voice
- 7:35Speaker 2: in your mind that says I'm not gonna do this,
- 7:38Speaker 2: this is gonna be great, but then saying all right,
- 7:41Speaker 2: it's gonna be fantastic and it's gonna be really good
- 7:44Speaker 2: for me. And just that act of overcoming that initial
- 7:48Speaker 2: inside voice is already so powerful that it's alone is
- 7:52Speaker 2: already worth it.
- 7:53Speaker 1: That's that's you just said it all right there. In
- 7:57Speaker 1: my opinion, that that's the key right there, because look
- 8:00Speaker 1: at how many things in our lives, yes exactly, that
- 8:03Speaker 1: we dread exactly whatever whatever they may be. It could be.
- 8:09Speaker 1: It could be the dread of you know, we got
- 8:11Speaker 1: an impending surgery that's coming up. We have we have
- 8:14Speaker 1: an impending breakup that's that's coming up.
- 8:17Speaker 2: It's a million things.
- 8:18Speaker 1: You know, what's it going to be? What's it going
- 8:20Speaker 1: to be like?
- 8:21Speaker 2: Yep?
- 8:22Speaker 1: On the other side, what's it going to be like.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Yep, it's the it's the well, that's the thing would worry, right,
- 8:28Speaker 2: You worry about things in your head, and it's like
- 8:31Speaker 2: a fraction of the thing that you all worry about
- 8:34Speaker 2: is actually going to come to pass. Sure, And it's
- 8:36Speaker 2: the same here you worry about you know, it's gonna
- 8:38Speaker 2: suck it, it's gonna be cold, and it's gonna be
- 8:40Speaker 2: and then you get in it, right and you know,
- 8:43Speaker 2: like with you I I guided you through it with
- 8:47Speaker 2: with the with the breathing methods. Yes, and then after
- 8:50Speaker 2: twenty thirty seconds you literally calm down in the freezing water. Yes,
- 8:55Speaker 2: you go like, ah, you go, man, this is it's
- 8:58Speaker 2: still cold. But you can you You go like, I
- 9:01Speaker 2: can do this, I can do hard things.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Yeah. The first time I did it. The first time
- 9:06Speaker 1: I did it, I had a smile on my face.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Because I was do we have footage of that we
- 9:12Speaker 2: do somewhere somewhere?
- 9:14Speaker 1: Okay, it's I think it's what. I had to smile
- 9:16Speaker 1: on my face because I was like, because I was thinking,
- 9:21Speaker 1: son of a bitch, this guy is right. I am.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I wasn't in the ice the whole time going No,
- 9:30Speaker 1: it was literally thirty seconds.
- 9:32Speaker 2: You calm down, you come right down. It's then it's
- 9:35Speaker 2: it's a it's That's one of the reasons why it's
- 9:38Speaker 2: so wonderful to do it is why to introducing people
- 9:41Speaker 2: to the ice bath and seeing how they respond that
- 9:45Speaker 2: moment where they go from out of breath and then
- 9:51Speaker 2: listening to me making them breathe in deep and out
- 9:54Speaker 2: long and calming themselves down and that moment where they
- 9:58Speaker 2: go that is that is is really magical. It's really fantastic.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Donna wants to know, is it dangerous to be in
- 10:08Speaker 1: that cold of water? And when we say that cold,
- 10:12Speaker 1: we're talking about a ten air freezing Yeah, right around
- 10:15Speaker 1: a freezing right around thirty degrees.
- 10:17Speaker 2: It's probably it's probably thirty three thirty four. All right,
- 10:19Speaker 2: it's right right around it's freezing.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Is it Dangerous's super cold water?
- 10:24Speaker 2: Bro it is?
- 10:25Speaker 1: You know, it's dangerous. Dangerous.
- 10:27Speaker 2: It's dangerous. If you have let's say, if you already
- 10:31Speaker 2: suffer from really high blood pressure, you shouldn't probably do it.
- 10:36Speaker 2: If you have serious heart issues, you should probably not
- 10:40Speaker 2: do it. Okay, but save those things. It is it
- 10:44Speaker 2: is safe to do, uh, provided you do it under
- 10:48Speaker 2: the guidance of somebody who knows what they're doing for
- 10:51Speaker 2: the first time. Don't go by yourself, because if you
- 10:54Speaker 2: freak out in water, that can be very dangerous.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Good morning, if you're just joining us up. First of all,
- 11:00Speaker 1: Happy Memorial Day, Our young vanderslut is our guest this morning,
- 11:07Speaker 1: our young.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Very young vander Shoot.
- 11:12Speaker 1: All right, yeah, all right. You know, here's the thing.
- 11:19Speaker 1: You know, I want to know what about your name?
- 11:22Speaker 1: Because after I had met you, I had met someone
- 11:29Speaker 1: who said to me, have you met this crazy you
- 11:33Speaker 1: got German bastard just down in Woodstock or White River
- 11:38Speaker 1: or whatever. This guy is freaking batshit crazy?
- 11:42Speaker 2: And I was like, I take that as a compliment.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Yes, when people say that, first of all, you're not German.
- 11:48Speaker 2: No, it ain't much of it, ain't Dutch.
- 11:58Speaker 1: That I love that like, you know. That was the
- 12:04Speaker 1: thing is like, if this ice bath was just sitting there,
- 12:08Speaker 1: there's no way in hell I would have just guided there.
- 12:11Speaker 1: But you saying to me, hey man, I'm gonna be
- 12:15Speaker 1: not only right with you, but I'm gonna be talking
- 12:19Speaker 1: you through every second of it. And to see, you know,
- 12:25Speaker 1: grown men in there and they're like.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Oh yeah, they need to hold your hands. Yes, most
- 12:31Speaker 2: times I hold people's hands, literally hold their hands, it
- 12:35Speaker 2: doesn't matter what. Well, and I got a bunch of
- 12:38Speaker 2: rubber duckies in the bath here you need to which
- 12:41Speaker 2: you know also mentally they help because your your eyes
- 12:46Speaker 2: are looking at the duckies and that's not really scary, right,
- 12:50Speaker 2: So mentally it already sort of puts you more at
- 12:52Speaker 2: ease for the crazy thing you're going to go through.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I when when I first met you and everything, of
- 13:02Speaker 1: course I had followed wim Hoff right, who tell.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Us another crazy Dutch guy, crazy Beard, a Dutch guy.
- 13:11Speaker 1: For folks that you that don't know who wim Hoff is,
- 13:15Speaker 1: please explain and.
- 13:16Speaker 2: So shall I shall I explain how I got into it.
- 13:22Speaker 2: So I was doing obstacle course races, okay, because at
- 13:27Speaker 2: a certain age people start doing obstacle course racist to
- 13:31Speaker 2: sort of prove that they still got it right. So
- 13:35Speaker 2: I was doing that and then one Christmas, uh, my
- 13:39Speaker 2: wonderful wife Charn gave me the book Breath by James Nestor.
- 13:44Speaker 2: In that book, I did a short version of that
- 13:49Speaker 2: book is that you should really breathe through your nose always,
- 13:54Speaker 2: except when you're eating or talking, because that's so much
- 13:58Speaker 2: better for you. But in that book it also mentioned
- 14:01Speaker 2: vim Hoff, who is this crazy bearded Dutch guy who's
- 14:07Speaker 2: pretty famous, and me being from Holland, you would have
- 14:10Speaker 2: thought I would have heard of him as well, which
- 14:13Speaker 2: I hadn't. So then I bought his book The vim
- 14:17Speaker 2: Hoff Method, and he has a method that's part breathing,
- 14:23Speaker 2: part cold exposure, part meditation I would say mindfulness, and
- 14:30Speaker 2: there are three separate components. So I read his book
- 14:36Speaker 2: and I thought I had this this cold exposure thing.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I got to check that out. So I started to
- 14:40Speaker 2: do cold showers and then I started to do ice bath.
- 14:45Speaker 2: I just got a watering troth filled it with water
- 14:50Speaker 2: and ice and hopped in. And then I had friends
- 14:54Speaker 2: and family come over and they hopped in and everybody
- 14:57Speaker 2: liked it. And it was really that got a got
- 15:01Speaker 2: a lot of traction. So I thought, oh, it's just
- 15:03Speaker 2: this is pretty cool pun intended, but I don't want
- 15:07Speaker 2: everybody to come to my house all the time.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Ah.
- 15:11Speaker 2: So I thought, I got to take this show on
- 15:12Speaker 2: the road. And I called a friend of mine, Mike Welch,
- 15:18Speaker 2: who's really great at building pizza trucks and such, and
- 15:22Speaker 2: I see it. I want a trailer. It has to
- 15:25Speaker 2: have a changing room, a big container of water, a
- 15:29Speaker 2: big freezer to keep ice in, and some room to
- 15:32Speaker 2: keep my tubs. He said, yeah, I can do it.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I'll call you back tomorrow. So he called the next day.
- 15:37Speaker 2: We agreed on a price, and he said, yeah, I
- 15:38Speaker 2: haven't done in three weeks. And three weeks four weeks later,
- 15:45Speaker 2: I had a big trailer and I started to go,
- 15:48Speaker 2: you know, to de Green in Woodstock, for instance, and
- 15:51Speaker 2: I would set up and I would have an ice
- 15:53Speaker 2: bath and people would walk by and look at me,
- 15:57Speaker 2: what is this crazy mofo doing right? And I would
- 16:01Speaker 2: talk to them about why I'm doing it. What the
- 16:04Speaker 2: health benefits are, what the mental benefits are, And slowly
- 16:10Speaker 2: I started to convince people to try it, which is
- 16:14Speaker 2: not an easy thing to do. No. I always say,
- 16:17Speaker 2: if I can make money off of people that say
- 16:20Speaker 2: hell no, yes, I'd be all set, be all said.
- 16:25Speaker 2: I don't know the exact number, but ninety five percent
- 16:27Speaker 2: of people will probably never do it. So it's it's
- 16:31Speaker 2: hard to convince people to get in a bucket of
- 16:35Speaker 2: near freezing water.
- 16:36Speaker 1: But then you give them the tools, not not only
- 16:40Speaker 1: the knowledge but through it, yes, but but also an
- 16:45Speaker 1: ice bath yes, that they can take home and and
- 16:50Speaker 1: do on their own schedule.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Yep. And it's and it's so again, it's really hard
- 16:55Speaker 2: to convince people to try it. Yes, but practically everyone
- 17:01Speaker 2: that tries it, yeah, becomes hooked. Yes, because of you know,
- 17:07Speaker 2: it has it has all these health benefits which are numerous. Yes,
- 17:13Speaker 2: But the main thing is is that it instantaneously makes
- 17:17Speaker 2: you feel fantastic. It does like you can conquer the
- 17:20Speaker 2: entire world.
- 17:21Speaker 1: I was just having a conversation before we went hot
- 17:25Speaker 1: this morning, telling you about the very Heritage festival, and
- 17:28Speaker 1: we already have a comment this morning that says this
- 17:31Speaker 1: could be a big hit at the Berry Heritage Festival.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Well, we got to see if we can if we
- 17:36Speaker 2: can get a spot there at the Bury Heritage Festival
- 17:39Speaker 2: in July, right.
- 17:40Speaker 1: In July, the end of July. You roll this trailer in.
- 17:44Speaker 1: You've got everything in there, You've got a changing room,
- 17:46Speaker 1: you even have you have eliminated every excuse.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Yes, well and now I've eliminated I've eliminated another excuse
- 17:54Speaker 2: because people say, oh, I hate the cold. So now oh, yeah,
- 17:57Speaker 2: there's the trailer. Look at that. Ye now I have
- 18:02Speaker 2: my friend Mike again has converted the changing room into
- 18:07Speaker 2: a sauna. Come yes, sir, so.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Wait a minute so you can freeze your ass off.
- 18:14Speaker 2: And then you can warm up afterwards.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Dude, that's crazy.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Well, I feel that it's it's easier to convince people
- 18:24Speaker 2: to get into freezing water if they know afterwards they
- 18:28Speaker 2: can warm up again.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Aha. And when people say to you, oh, I would
- 18:34Speaker 1: love to try this, and I don't have any I
- 18:38Speaker 1: don't have any shorts or a baby, I don't have
- 18:41Speaker 1: any dry clothes.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Everything they can get changed. I have shorts, I have
- 18:46Speaker 2: towels there there, it's all self sufficient.
- 18:50Speaker 1: It's crazy. You you walked me through it. When I
- 18:54Speaker 1: got into the ice bath with you, you walked me
- 18:58Speaker 1: through it. You explained everything that's happening to me, which
- 19:02Speaker 1: I found fascinating and comforting. I'm assuming and very comforting.
- 19:08Speaker 1: But I joke around all the time on the air
- 19:12Speaker 1: about all of my orthopedic issues. I've got a body
- 19:18Speaker 1: that's full of arthritis in every joint. I have inflammation
- 19:24Speaker 1: problems up the wazoo. I was working out in the
- 19:30Speaker 1: yard yesterday and I wanted to tell you this. I
- 19:34Speaker 1: have been waiting to tell you this on the air
- 19:37Speaker 1: working out in the yard yesterday. Afterward, bending over the wheelbarrow,
- 19:43Speaker 1: the whole thing. Afterwards, I can feel the lactic acid
- 19:50Speaker 1: building up in my joints if I sit down on
- 19:53Speaker 1: the couch, even twenty minutes getting up off that couch,
- 20:01Speaker 1: you should hear.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Me creaking everywhere.
- 20:07Speaker 1: It's Charlyn's looking at me like, really, dude, seriously.
- 20:17Speaker 2: The ice bathist the solution. Well, it's not a fix all,
- 20:21Speaker 2: but it's a it's a it's a fixed a lot
- 20:23Speaker 2: without drugs.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Yeah, you're using your natural drugs that you already have
- 20:27Speaker 1: in your body, which a lot of the time are
- 20:30Speaker 1: kind of just sitting there on reserved.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Well, I have a I have a good story about.
- 20:35Speaker 2: So we're in the in the Woodstock area, Wide River Junction.
- 20:39Speaker 2: So there's one time we were having lunch in White
- 20:41Speaker 2: River Junction and Charn says, you should get a haircut.
- 20:46Speaker 2: There's a barber shop right up there. Go check that out.
- 20:49Speaker 2: It's all right. So I went to the barber shop
- 20:51Speaker 2: in White River Junction, Bouchard's barber Shop, and Denise Bouchard,
- 20:56Speaker 2: whom I had never met, h was cutting to cut
- 21:00Speaker 2: my hair and we started talking and you know, naturally
- 21:03Speaker 2: we get the ice bath and everything, and she goes, well,
- 21:06Speaker 2: I've always been kind of curious, but I've never never
- 21:09Speaker 2: done that, and I want to do a polar plunge.
- 21:12Speaker 2: I said, well, is it happened to me? I'm gonna
- 21:14Speaker 2: be And this was in December, So December two years
- 21:16Speaker 2: ago now or a year and a half ago, let's
- 21:18Speaker 2: call a year and a half ago. And I said,
- 21:22Speaker 2: I'm going to be in White River Junction tomorrow with
- 21:26Speaker 2: my trailer and an ice bath, so you can just
- 21:28Speaker 2: come by and give it a try. So she said, okay.
- 21:32Speaker 2: The next day I went to White River Junction. We
- 21:34Speaker 2: set up and the niece came by and her business
- 21:38Speaker 2: partner there, Sandy, and they're both in their sixties. I
- 21:42Speaker 2: would say they went in and they loved it. A
- 21:47Speaker 2: couple of days later was January. First, we had a
- 21:50Speaker 2: polar dip at the Moscoma Lake. They went in there
- 21:54Speaker 2: and the niece was hooked. She got a tub, put
- 21:58Speaker 2: it on her porch and it was so it was December, January,
- 22:02Speaker 2: so it got cold, the water got cold naturally. She
- 22:07Speaker 2: started to go in every single morning, and she has
- 22:12Speaker 2: arthritis in both her knees, and she said after a
- 22:15Speaker 2: couple of months of going in consistent, consistently, she used
- 22:20Speaker 2: to go to the hospital every three months to get
- 22:23Speaker 2: shots for her knees, right Cortizon shots or whatever you
- 22:26Speaker 2: get for that. She said. After doing ice bath regularly,
- 22:30Speaker 2: she canceled her appointments. She's not doing him anymore, she says,
- 22:33Speaker 2: he doesn't need him anymore.
- 22:36Speaker 1: It is so amazing, it's fantastic, so amazing. You know,
- 22:40Speaker 1: you said to me, I don't know if you remember,
- 22:45Speaker 1: you said to me, gd wh when you hurt something,
- 22:51Speaker 1: you fall, you hurt. There's the injury, but it's the
- 22:56Speaker 1: inflammation around that injury that causes the pain. So we're
- 23:02Speaker 1: all taught since whenever an ice pack, you've got to
- 23:09Speaker 1: ice it. If it's if it's a burn, if it's
- 23:12Speaker 1: a sprain, ankle, whatever it is, get ice on it
- 23:14Speaker 1: right away because that reduces the inflammation, which symptom right,
- 23:20Speaker 1: which symptomatically reduces the pain. So you get ice on it,
- 23:25Speaker 1: and then you got to get the injury fixed whatever,
- 23:28Speaker 1: or it needs to heal. But the ice is what
- 23:33Speaker 1: reduces the inflammation. And then you said, imagine your whole
- 23:37Speaker 1: body being on an ice pack, literally every millimeter of
- 23:42Speaker 1: your body being covered by thirty something degree water.
- 23:48Speaker 2: And it's a it's it isn't. It isn't. But it's
- 23:52Speaker 2: a relative simple thing to do, right, Just sit in
- 23:55Speaker 2: a bucket sure of really really cold water. You know.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Actually it's a simple thing to do, but mentally it's
- 24:04Speaker 2: not right. Mentally it's a hard thing to do, which
- 24:07Speaker 2: is oftentimes when you ask people, right, they would rather
- 24:10Speaker 2: take a pill than do something that will make him
- 24:15Speaker 2: better or feel better. And the ice pat is the
- 24:17Speaker 2: same thing. It's a simple thing to do, but it's
- 24:19Speaker 2: you know, it's a nice path. It's not super easy.
- 24:23Speaker 1: You said to me, it's and I found this to
- 24:26Speaker 1: be striking. You said to me, it's actually more difficult
- 24:33Speaker 1: to be in a nice, comfortable, warm shower and then
- 24:36Speaker 1: all of a sudden it changes to cold.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Well, yeah, so the cold shower, there's always a debate
- 24:44Speaker 2: because a cold shower is easier to do, right, because
- 24:48Speaker 2: you take a shower in the morning anyway, just got
- 24:50Speaker 2: to turn it all the way to cold. And here
- 24:52Speaker 2: in Vermont, clearly the water gets really cold when you
- 24:57Speaker 2: turn it to cold. Sure, but like we said before, right,
- 25:00Speaker 2: it's the initial shock that's the hardest part, right, and
- 25:03Speaker 2: then after in the ice bath, and then after twenty
- 25:05Speaker 2: thirty seconds you get past that and you calm down
- 25:09Speaker 2: and you're okay with the shower. It hits your front,
- 25:14Speaker 2: you have the initial shock. Then you turn around, hit
- 25:16Speaker 2: your back, you get the initial shock again. You turn around,
- 25:19Speaker 2: it's initial shock again. So you you get that initial
- 25:22Speaker 2: shock over and over again. So a lot of people
- 25:27Speaker 2: tell me that they find that hopping in an ice
- 25:31Speaker 2: bath is easier than doing a cold shower.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Isn't that something else?
- 25:36Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's but a cold shower is easier accessible.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Yeah, right, So I also do.
- 25:44Speaker 2: It sometimes if I if I know I'm not going
- 25:46Speaker 2: in the ice bath and I'm taking a shower. Then
- 25:49Speaker 2: I turn it to cold at the end and it
- 25:51Speaker 2: still gives you.
- 25:52Speaker 1: That cold and then back to the warm.
- 25:55Speaker 2: No, the best thing is cold and on cold. That's
- 26:04Speaker 2: the best thing to do.
- 26:05Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you guys something right now. If
- 26:08Speaker 1: you're if you're joining us, this is our young vander
- 26:13Speaker 1: shoot yes, from Arctic Arctic Bliss, which is out of woodstock. Okay,
- 26:23Speaker 1: you travel all over the place with your your trailer.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I'm going to show it again. You've you've probably seen
- 26:29Speaker 1: it on the interstate.
- 26:30Speaker 2: We can go. We can go anywhere. I've been to
- 26:32Speaker 2: New Jersey. Uh, we can go anywhere as long as
- 26:35Speaker 2: I can drive there.
- 26:37Speaker 1: It is you. You said something, and you you make
- 26:41Speaker 1: this very well known. What happens to your body when
- 26:49Speaker 1: you get into the ice bath. And it's not just
- 26:54Speaker 1: this guy is different from that guy. If you have
- 26:58Speaker 1: a human body, correct, and you get into an ice bath,
- 27:06Speaker 1: something profound happens chemically, physically, yes, to your your brain
- 27:16Speaker 1: and your body. And I'm telling you wait until you
- 27:19Speaker 1: hear this.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Please you explain, Well, when you get cold, when you
- 27:25Speaker 2: get really cold, like an ice bath, your brain goes
- 27:30Speaker 2: into survival mode, right, fight or flight, Yeah, it goes
- 27:35Speaker 2: we're gonna die. We need to stay warm. We got
- 27:38Speaker 2: to do something. And there's two ways that you can
- 27:41Speaker 2: stay warm. One is brown fat. Brown fat is different
- 27:47Speaker 2: from a white fat. White fat is you know at
- 27:49Speaker 2: your belly that you don't really want. White fat is
- 27:52Speaker 2: energy storage. Right, if we eat more than we consume,
- 27:57Speaker 2: we get white fat because it's energy storage for later.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Brown fat is fat that's more inside of us. It's
- 28:08Speaker 2: around our organs, I think, and in the back of
- 28:10Speaker 2: the neck. Brown fat gets activated when we get into
- 28:15Speaker 2: the cold, and brown fat burns energy. It's an energy burner.
- 28:22Speaker 2: So when we get in the cold, your brown fat
- 28:25Speaker 2: gets activated and it starts burning glucose and fats from
- 28:29Speaker 2: your bloodstream, which keeps you warm. The brown fat is
- 28:35Speaker 2: your internal stove. When we're little, we have percentage wise,
- 28:40Speaker 2: way more brown fat than when we get older. As
- 28:43Speaker 2: we get older, we lose it unless you start doing
- 28:49Speaker 2: ice bath or cold showers, cold exposure, then it starts
- 28:53Speaker 2: building back again. If the brown fat cannot keep up
- 28:58Speaker 2: anymore and you get colder, then you start shivering and
- 29:03Speaker 2: your muscles. Right, if you if you exercise, you use
- 29:07Speaker 2: your muscles and you get warm, right. Shivering is an
- 29:11Speaker 2: involuntary muscle twitching to create heat. So you know, if
- 29:17Speaker 2: you're in an ice bath and you start shivering uncontrollably,
- 29:20Speaker 2: then you have to get out because then you're getting
- 29:22Speaker 2: too cold. But unless that is happening, which I've never
- 29:27Speaker 2: had anybody that I had to take out before a
- 29:30Speaker 2: couple of minutes, so it's wo and that that keeps
- 29:36Speaker 2: you warm for a certain amount of time. What your
- 29:40Speaker 2: body also does it releases a lot of adrenaline and dopamine,
- 29:45Speaker 2: like two hundred and fifty percent, which are the feel
- 29:49Speaker 2: good chemicals, and there's you can't have your body not
- 29:55Speaker 2: do that. When you get in an ice bath, your
- 29:58Speaker 2: body automatically goes, we gotta survive its flight or fight.
- 30:02Speaker 2: We gotta we gotta do this, so it dumbs all
- 30:05Speaker 2: the adrenaline dopamine, and when you get out, you feel
- 30:08Speaker 2: fantastic because of that increase in the dopamine and the adrenaline,
- 30:13Speaker 2: and that stays with you for like four or five hours.
- 30:17Speaker 2: They say, So if you do an ice bath in
- 30:19Speaker 2: the morning, it really sets you up to have a
- 30:22Speaker 2: great day because you're you're just feeling great because and
- 30:26Speaker 2: it's impossible not to do that. So that's that's the
- 30:29Speaker 2: beauty of doing ice bath events. It makes everybody feel great.
- 30:34Speaker 2: It's not a friend of mine says it always delivers.
- 30:38Speaker 2: There's not. You know, when you have a massage, you
- 30:40Speaker 2: can say, ah, that was okay. That's with the icebath.
- 30:43Speaker 2: That's not the case. It's always wow. Yeah because of that,
- 30:48Speaker 2: because of that big dump of adrenaline and dopamine.
- 30:50Speaker 1: And I remember when I had my first ice bath
- 30:54Speaker 1: right at the Green Mountain Reggie Fest. Right, Uh you
- 30:59Speaker 1: you said to me, you're gonna feel You're gonna feel
- 31:01Speaker 1: great for like four hours, right, And son of a bitch,
- 31:09Speaker 1: it was four hours almost to the minute before. And
- 31:13Speaker 1: I even looked at my watch and I'm like, I'm
- 31:16Speaker 1: starting to feel a little stiff again, and I look
- 31:19Speaker 1: at my watch exactly four hours. Oh my god.
- 31:26Speaker 2: We had a We had a White River Jian White
- 31:29Speaker 2: River Junction. We set up on a sidewalk fairly often
- 31:33Speaker 2: and we try to convince passerbys to try an icebath.
- 31:38Speaker 2: And we had this, uh, this this wonderful woman, a
- 31:43Speaker 2: larger woman, and she was walking with a cane and
- 31:47Speaker 2: she went in and it was that was spectacular. It
- 31:52Speaker 2: was like a gospel moment. And she got out and
- 31:55Speaker 2: she said her legs always always.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Her her always Yeah, and they weren't hurting.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Said, it's fantastic. And I saw her like a couple
- 32:04Speaker 2: of months later and she had indeed incorporated cold exposure
- 32:09Speaker 2: into her health regime.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Is amazing.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Yeah, it's fantastic.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Comment here, the best sleep that I've ever had.
- 32:18Speaker 2: There, you go, yep, exactly, that's exactly right. I hear
- 32:21Speaker 2: that a lot.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Why is that.
- 32:24Speaker 2: So? It It greatly boosts your metabolism, and I think
- 32:28Speaker 2: it just it just takes so much energy too, that
- 32:32Speaker 2: you just leap really well. Okay, I'm just I've heard
- 32:38Speaker 2: this more often. I had somebody trying icebath who said
- 32:43Speaker 2: she had she notoriously slept really really bad, and she
- 32:49Speaker 2: also said afterwards that she had the best night sleep
- 32:52Speaker 2: she'd had in years.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Yeah. Reducing inflammation is something, my god, we all need. Man.
- 33:02Speaker 1: It's like, look at don't don't get me started on
- 33:07Speaker 1: just the foods that we eat here in America and
- 33:12Speaker 1: all of the ship that's in it that contributes to inflammation.
- 33:20Speaker 1: I mean, we're we're eating foods here in the United
- 33:22Speaker 1: States that are Arctic glacier.
- 33:24Speaker 2: The ice company just goes by.
- 33:26Speaker 1: See that.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Wow, how universe works.
- 33:31Speaker 1: You know. I was having a conversation with with some
- 33:33Speaker 1: friends yesterday about the foods that are that we're consuming
- 33:39Speaker 1: here that are banned in Europe, and we're walking around
- 33:49Speaker 1: with a lot of inflammation. You don't, You don't have
- 33:54Speaker 1: to have an injury to have inflammation. All you have
- 33:58Speaker 1: to do is eat a lot of the stuff that right,
- 34:01Speaker 1: that is available to you here in America.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Correct, And all you gotta do is have an ice
- 34:08Speaker 2: bath every day?
- 34:09Speaker 1: Yeah? Right, So are you do you do the ice
- 34:13Speaker 1: bath every day?
- 34:14Speaker 2: Well? I wasn't doing it every day. I was probably
- 34:18Speaker 2: doing it three two, three, four times a week. They say,
- 34:24Speaker 2: they whoever studies these things, say that optimal, whatever optimal means,
- 34:31Speaker 2: is eleven minutes per week, broken up in different sessions.
- 34:35Speaker 2: So we usually go to three minutes. So if you
- 34:40Speaker 2: go like four times three minutes, that should be good.
- 34:45Speaker 2: But it's it's it's the same thing, right, One time
- 34:48Speaker 2: a week is better than none at all. So it's
- 34:51Speaker 2: just it's all very personal how much access you have
- 34:55Speaker 2: to it and.
- 34:56Speaker 1: What about testosterone and what about male issues? So and
- 35:05Speaker 1: some Mark Mark Mark Vandershoot is asking this, Yes.
- 35:10Speaker 2: That's my son. Of course he was. Of course he
- 35:13Speaker 2: was asking about male issues. Yes, Mark, but no, definitely.
- 35:21Speaker 2: But they say that if you have an ice bath
- 35:24Speaker 2: before a workout, So oftentimes the general knowledge is right,
- 35:32Speaker 2: have an ice bath after workout, like after a marathon.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Your muscles are inflamed.
- 35:37Speaker 2: And right, testosterone wise, for males, you should have an
- 35:44Speaker 2: ice bath before a workout. So have an ice bath
- 35:48Speaker 2: then do your workouts, and that is really testosterone boosting.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Really Okay, what about getting intimate.
- 36:00Speaker 2: In the ice path? I see your point there.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Having the ice path before you're getting you're planning on
- 36:12Speaker 1: getting intimate maybe you know, only to find out maybe
- 36:16Speaker 1: like you know, several hours before.
- 36:19Speaker 2: It increases your adrenaline and dopamine, so.
- 36:22Speaker 1: You'll be ready and you're you're what's the word I'm
- 36:26Speaker 1: thinking of it?
- 36:27Speaker 2: And it increases blood flow, blood flow because when you
- 36:30Speaker 2: get into the ice circulation, yes, your blood circulation, So
- 36:34Speaker 2: when you get into the ice, your body goes in
- 36:37Speaker 2: survival mode and it goes we got to make sure
- 36:42Speaker 2: that there's enough blood for our vital organs, So it
- 36:46Speaker 2: shuts down blood circulation to your extremities like your your arms,
- 36:52Speaker 2: your legs and uh, there's another extremity that we males have. Yes,
- 36:59Speaker 2: when you get so it closes your arteries in veins.
- 37:02Speaker 2: That's why you feel cold in your feet, in your
- 37:05Speaker 2: hands first, because it decreases blood circulation there. When you
- 37:10Speaker 2: get out, your arteries in veins open up again, and
- 37:14Speaker 2: that closing in an opening is sort of like exercise
- 37:17Speaker 2: for your arteries in veins, and that increases overall blood circulation.
- 37:23Speaker 2: Is great vascular yep, exactly. So, yes, shrinkage definitely happens
- 37:29Speaker 2: when you're in the ice bath. But when you come
- 37:32Speaker 2: out and blood resumes, you're good to go.
- 37:37Speaker 1: And that's something that's why we say shrinkage.
- 37:39Speaker 2: That's right, shrinkage is real.
- 37:43Speaker 1: I jumped in, I jumped into the into we were
- 37:47Speaker 1: at the beach in Maine, right and I jumped into
- 37:51Speaker 1: the ocean and came out. And my wife had all
- 37:56Speaker 1: kinds of jokes about shrinkage exactly.
- 38:01Speaker 2: But it's a good thing because it increases blood circulation
- 38:04Speaker 2: at a later point.
- 38:07Speaker 1: So is it safe to do this every day? Should
- 38:09Speaker 1: we talk to the doctor first?
- 38:10Speaker 2: You should talk to a doctor first. That is always
- 38:14Speaker 2: the best thing to do, because, like I said, if
- 38:16Speaker 2: you have serious heart issues, you should probably skip an
- 38:20Speaker 2: ice bath. In general, it's it's safe to do, but
- 38:25Speaker 2: I would definitely do it under the guidance of somebody
- 38:29Speaker 2: who knows what they're doing for at least the first
- 38:31Speaker 2: couple of times. Never do it by yourself in case
- 38:35Speaker 2: something does happen. Right, Right, you're in a body of waters.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Right, you'll always be always be with with someone. And
- 38:42Speaker 1: and I say be with be with you, I mean
- 38:47Speaker 1: be with you and learn this, and you'll you're not
- 38:51Speaker 1: gonna you know, you're gonna encourage someone, but you're not
- 38:55Speaker 1: gonna put like a no goodly amount of pressure on them.
- 38:59Speaker 1: You're gonna encourage, You're gonna explain the benefit.
- 39:01Speaker 2: It's a delicate it's a delicate line encouraging people to
- 39:06Speaker 2: go in because everybody has hesitant. Nobody wants to do
- 39:11Speaker 2: it because it's an ice bath.
- 39:13Speaker 1: The last time we were together doing an ice bath,
- 39:16Speaker 1: it was snowing out. It was a very cold day.
- 39:19Speaker 1: We had a guy that was there. This was over
- 39:21Speaker 1: on on Summer Street here and Barry.
- 39:23Speaker 2: At the Washington Mental Health Yes, place.
- 39:28Speaker 1: There was a guy that was there. There were two
- 39:31Speaker 1: guys that were there that were absolutely not planning on
- 39:38Speaker 1: not at all, and they.
- 39:40Speaker 2: Both went in. They both went in and they both
- 39:42Speaker 2: loved it.
- 39:43Speaker 1: But you brought them there and you you, you brought
- 39:46Speaker 1: them over to the edge of the ice bath and
- 39:48Speaker 1: you explain the benefits.
- 39:49Speaker 2: And it's a again, it's a and you know, you
- 39:52Speaker 2: got to put some pressure on the credits. No, they didn't.
- 39:55Speaker 2: They loved it. The one guy, I don't know what
- 39:57Speaker 2: his injury was. Was it his leg? He had something,
- 40:01Speaker 2: but he was also yeah, Mark, that's right, Mark, Mark.
- 40:05Speaker 2: He had some injury. I forgot what it was. But
- 40:07Speaker 2: he came out of the changing room afterwards and he
- 40:09Speaker 2: goes his back, his back, he goes, I feel fantastic. Yeah,
- 40:14Speaker 2: back feels great. Never felt this great.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, And look at heaven. I mean she was
- 40:19Speaker 1: she was hesitating and felt like a million bucks.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean she did great.
- 40:25Speaker 1: Literally feel like you're eighteen years old.
- 40:27Speaker 2: But you got to you gotta push people a little bit. Yeah,
- 40:30Speaker 2: a little bit, because if you don't push them at all, Right,
- 40:33Speaker 2: So I try to do it in a in a
- 40:35Speaker 2: in a I try to push people in a somewhat
- 40:38Speaker 2: comical way. Yeah, you know that, they laugh, but I'm
- 40:42Speaker 2: still saying, sure, you know, you should really do this. Yeah,
- 40:45Speaker 2: I know it's hard, but you should do it. And
- 40:48Speaker 2: it's it's interesting to see them because I've put hundreds
- 40:52Speaker 2: and hundreds of people through this. Yeah, and it's very
- 40:55Speaker 2: interesting to see the different how different people reached ponds.
- 41:01Speaker 2: In general, women do better than men. A lot of
- 41:06Speaker 2: women say that the breathing methods are the same as
- 41:10Speaker 2: giving birth, so it's the same calming down with the breathing. Interestingly,
- 41:18Speaker 2: the really strong, big guys do the worst.
- 41:23Speaker 1: That's so interesting.
- 41:24Speaker 2: Yes, and I figured out why they see it as
- 41:29Speaker 2: a conquering thing. They're going, oh, I'm gonna conquer this.
- 41:32Speaker 2: I'm strong, I'm tough, waw. And it's the exact opposite.
- 41:36Speaker 2: It's a surrendering. It's the exact opposite. Somebody who does
- 41:41Speaker 2: meditation a lot will have no problem with this because
- 41:45Speaker 2: it's all calming yourself down. We had a guy again
- 41:49Speaker 2: in White River Junction. We had a guy go in.
- 41:52Speaker 2: He was a big guy, young guy, but you know, strong,
- 41:55Speaker 2: big guy. He went in, gut outs, went in, gut outs,
- 42:00Speaker 2: went in, got out. It took him five times of
- 42:03Speaker 2: jumping in and jumping out immediately, took him five times
- 42:06Speaker 2: to finally calm himself down and be okay. And then
- 42:10Speaker 2: he lasted a couple of minutes and he did great,
- 42:12Speaker 2: but it took him five times. When he got out
- 42:16Speaker 2: and when he got dressed again, he thanked us and
- 42:19Speaker 2: as he walked away he said, Man, I've been shot
- 42:22Speaker 2: at in Afghanistan, but this is something else. And it was.
- 42:26Speaker 2: And that's that's typical. It's oftentimes the big, strong guys
- 42:31Speaker 2: that see it as a conquering thing that take more
- 42:35Speaker 2: time to calm down, yeah, and surrender to it.
- 42:39Speaker 1: You've also had people that can't get past that first
- 42:46Speaker 1: thirty thirty seconds.
- 42:48Speaker 2: That happens and they bail.
- 42:50Speaker 1: It's fight or flight. It's flight.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that happened. Not that often though it it happens,
- 42:57Speaker 2: but rarely. But the most people, most people do really well.
- 43:03Speaker 1: There's this transport is transformative.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Experience the second and it's beautiful to see on people's faces.
- 43:12Speaker 2: You see mind, yes, you see once they go from
- 43:16Speaker 2: because in the beginning you can't catch your breath. No,
- 43:21Speaker 2: it takes it literally takes your breath away. But then
- 43:23Speaker 2: I talk to you, and I tell you to breathe
- 43:25Speaker 2: in deep as deep as you can, and out long.
- 43:28Speaker 2: And if you just focus on your breathing in deep, outlong,
- 43:33Speaker 2: do not hold your breath. Then after twenty thirty seconds,
- 43:36Speaker 2: you literally go like a and you see people calm
- 43:40Speaker 2: down and you see the realization in their eyes, like, oh,
- 43:44Speaker 2: wait a minute, I can do this. I'm okay, I'm okay,
- 43:47Speaker 2: I can do this. I can do hard things. Yeah,
- 43:51Speaker 2: And that's really that's fantastic.
- 43:53Speaker 1: You know, so many of us when we're gathering around
- 43:59Speaker 1: the ice bath and our friend or our husband or
- 44:02Speaker 1: wife or relative is getting in there, and we see
- 44:06Speaker 1: how much hesitation they have and what it takes them
- 44:13Speaker 1: mental toughness to commit to doing this. I'm talking opening
- 44:20Speaker 1: the door to this trailer and going in and putting
- 44:22Speaker 1: on a bathing suit number one. Number two, coming out
- 44:27Speaker 1: and standing in front of the ice bath and the
- 44:30Speaker 1: crowd of people that are there. Okay, there's that number three.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Listening to your instructions and getting lifting your leg and
- 44:41Speaker 1: getting your first leg in the bath and then the
- 44:45Speaker 1: second leg. These are all stages. And then once you're
- 44:50Speaker 1: standing in that water waist deep, your brain is saying,
- 44:56Speaker 1: there's no way in hell that I can get pass this.
- 45:00Speaker 1: There's no way I can sit down right exactly.
- 45:03Speaker 2: But you can and you can do. And you know
- 45:07Speaker 2: what the beautiful thing is about this is that once
- 45:12Speaker 2: you start doing it, and or or even the first time,
- 45:15Speaker 2: when you do it and you get you sit down,
- 45:19Speaker 2: you calm yourself down and you come out and you
- 45:22Speaker 2: feel great. You realize that you can do things that
- 45:27Speaker 2: you never thought you could do, which is really empowering.
- 45:33Speaker 2: And you know, if you do it in the morning,
- 45:36Speaker 2: and let's say you afterwards, you're driving traffic, somebody cuts
- 45:38Speaker 2: you off, You're going, ah, whatever, I just did an
- 45:41Speaker 2: ice bath, whatever you do is fine. You can you
- 45:44Speaker 2: can handle so much more after you start your day
- 45:49Speaker 2: in freezing water.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a level of reset, Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 45:55Speaker 1: You but when when you as a spectator, when you
- 46:00Speaker 1: or your friend or your loved one comes out and
- 46:03Speaker 1: you can see the hesitation on their face, You see
- 46:07Speaker 1: what happens to their face, in their eyes when they
- 46:09Speaker 1: put that first leg in, You see what happens to
- 46:12Speaker 1: them when they sit down and they lose their breath.
- 46:16Speaker 1: You feel like you need to cheer them on with
- 46:20Speaker 1: as much enthusiasm as possible, but you actually encourage not
- 46:29Speaker 1: to do that so that there can be a sense
- 46:32Speaker 1: of focus that that person has on your voice.
- 46:37Speaker 2: Correct, because it's it's you know, it's it's very duplicitous
- 46:42Speaker 2: because anybody can do it, and it is relatively easy.
- 46:49Speaker 2: But on the other hand, it's also really hard, right,
- 46:52Speaker 2: It's a really hard thing to do, and to get
- 46:56Speaker 2: through it, you really need to focus on your breathing
- 47:01Speaker 2: and you need to listen to me telling you how
- 47:04Speaker 2: to breathe, and you're gonna be okay. And if everybody
- 47:07Speaker 2: around you is yelling and stuff, then you get distracted
- 47:10Speaker 2: and you look more at Freddy or Henrietta or whatever,
- 47:16Speaker 2: and then you then it's going to start to feel
- 47:19Speaker 2: colder again, and it's.
- 47:21Speaker 1: And then it's more it's more of trying to conquer.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Yeah, So I always ask everybody to be quiet while
- 47:28Speaker 2: the person goes in, and then the second they come out,
- 47:32Speaker 2: So I like to have people end with a head dunk,
- 47:35Speaker 2: and then when they come up from the head dunk
- 47:37Speaker 2: and come out, then everybody goes crazy and everybody is cheering,
- 47:41Speaker 2: and the person that comes out is filled with the dope,
- 47:44Speaker 2: meaning adrenaline, and then it's a real it's a real victory.
- 47:50Speaker 1: I saw your latest thing here the Saturday morning commandos.
- 47:54Speaker 1: What in that?
- 47:56Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 47:57Speaker 1: What the hell is going on here? Buddy?
- 47:59Speaker 2: What?
- 48:01Speaker 1: It's fantastic, less thread, more skin, better benefits.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Better benefits. It takes you to another level. If you
- 48:10Speaker 2: go commando, it's fine. However you go in right, A
- 48:18Speaker 2: lot of people wear a T shirt or and that's
- 48:21Speaker 2: all fine because it's still it's still freaking cold. Yeah,
- 48:27Speaker 2: but the less you have on, the more direct contact
- 48:31Speaker 2: the water has with your skin, the more intense the experiences.
- 48:38Speaker 1: What do you do afterwards? When you get out of
- 48:42Speaker 1: your ice bath? Do you?
- 48:45Speaker 2: I walk around a little bit.
- 48:47Speaker 1: You don't run for the hot shower.
- 48:48Speaker 2: I do not run for the hot shower. No. Well,
- 48:51Speaker 2: that's also a misconception because when you get out of
- 48:56Speaker 2: an ice bath, it doesn't really matter how cold it
- 48:59Speaker 2: is outside. It can be freezing outside. If you get
- 49:03Speaker 2: out of an ice bath, whatever the air is is
- 49:06Speaker 2: not going to feel cold because water conducts way more
- 49:13Speaker 2: than air. Right, water draws the heat out of you
- 49:17Speaker 2: way more than air can. So if you get out
- 49:20Speaker 2: of an ice bath, unless it's like minus twenty or
- 49:24Speaker 2: zero degrees or something, then yeah, it's going to be
- 49:26Speaker 2: cold out. But unless it's that when you get out
- 49:29Speaker 2: of an ice bath, you're not going to feel.
- 49:31Speaker 1: Cold, especially if you don't have a shirt on. I G.
- 49:38Speaker 2: See that.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Really you're drying faster and you.
- 49:40Speaker 2: Would drive faster without a shirt on. Yes, yes, and
- 49:44Speaker 2: moving if you get out, moving is really good because
- 49:49Speaker 2: moving will get your heart pumping and that will get
- 49:53Speaker 2: your blood circulation back again, which will warm you up again.
- 49:56Speaker 1: You can feel your body warming quickly. You can. It's
- 50:01Speaker 1: really odd, but.
- 50:02Speaker 2: You have to be careful because you know it's also
- 50:06Speaker 2: the longer you stay in, the longer it takes for
- 50:10Speaker 2: you to warm up. And there is so when you
- 50:15Speaker 2: get out, your art reagion veins open up again, right,
- 50:18Speaker 2: your blood starts pumping the blood everywhere. So the blood
- 50:22Speaker 2: goes through your fingers right, which are cold. It cools
- 50:27Speaker 2: the blood down that goes there, and then the cooler
- 50:30Speaker 2: blood goes back to your heart and then warms up
- 50:33Speaker 2: again and goes back again. So it takes a little
- 50:36Speaker 2: bit for you to really warm up. It's not just
- 50:40Speaker 2: when the blood reaches you sure that you're warmed up,
- 50:43Speaker 2: so you should be. You should be cautious when you
- 50:46Speaker 2: get out. You shouldn't really drive a trailer tractor or
- 50:49Speaker 2: something the minute you come out. Okay, wait like a
- 50:52Speaker 2: half an hour or so until you're really warmed up.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Throughout you're doing events, you do weddings, private events, yes,
- 51:03Speaker 1: running races, Yes, you're going to be corporate.
- 51:07Speaker 2: Great for team building. It's great for because if you
- 51:11Speaker 2: go through this together and you see your friends or
- 51:15Speaker 2: your peers or your your you know, your wedding guests
- 51:18Speaker 2: go through it, it is really a very empowering and
- 51:21Speaker 2: team building experience.
- 51:24Speaker 1: What about you're going to be at the Covered Bridges Race, Yes,
- 51:29Speaker 1: next Sunday.
- 51:30Speaker 2: Next Sunday, Yeah, June first, Covered Bridges Half Marathon in Woodstock.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Usually there's about two thousand plus people running that. We
- 51:39Speaker 2: were there. Last year we had almost one hundred and
- 51:41Speaker 2: forty people go in the ice bath, which was the
- 51:45Speaker 2: weather was great. It was fantastic. This year it really
- 51:51Speaker 2: is weather dependent, right, but we're expecting a lot of
- 51:54Speaker 2: people to hop in, especially now that we also have
- 51:57Speaker 2: the sauna available.
- 51:58Speaker 1: Yeah, right, very important, sure.
- 52:01Speaker 2: M Yeah, we're set up to have lots and lots
- 52:05Speaker 2: of people go in. It's great for recovering after a marathon.
- 52:10Speaker 2: And the great thing is with the ice bath, you
- 52:16Speaker 2: have to sort of get past the point of being uncomfortable. Right, Yes,
- 52:22Speaker 2: runners of a marathon or half marathon can only finish
- 52:26Speaker 2: that if they know how to get past the point
- 52:30Speaker 2: of being uncomfortable. Right, they say, you run, You run
- 52:34Speaker 2: ten percent with your legs and ninety percent with your mind.
- 52:39Speaker 2: So all these runners already have the know how how
- 52:47Speaker 2: to be okay with being uncomfortable. So it really fits
- 52:51Speaker 2: them all and they all do spectacularly.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Well, yeah, yeah, you you have. You have a pond
- 52:59Speaker 1: in your backyard.
- 53:00Speaker 2: We do.
- 53:02Speaker 1: And you go into that pond I do in the
- 53:06Speaker 1: middle of the winter.
- 53:08Speaker 2: It's all the same thing. Ice bath, frozen pond, the
- 53:13Speaker 2: water is all the same thing. What makes it the
- 53:16Speaker 2: interesting is like a frozen pond is cold, right, an
- 53:19Speaker 2: ice bath is cold. It's all the water is all
- 53:21Speaker 2: just about freezing. If you go into a stream. I
- 53:24Speaker 2: remember the first time I went into a stream. So
- 53:28Speaker 2: you go into a stream and the water is rushing
- 53:30Speaker 2: past you. That makes it feel so much colder, even
- 53:37Speaker 2: because it's you know, the windchill factor. You when you're
- 53:40Speaker 2: in the cold, you build a tiny layer of warmth
- 53:42Speaker 2: around you, which is also when you have a T
- 53:45Speaker 2: shirt on or something that that helps retain the heat
- 53:48Speaker 2: a little bit. But if you're in a a in
- 53:50Speaker 2: a river or a stream being swept away, it's being
- 53:52Speaker 2: swept away, so it feels really so much colder. I
- 53:55Speaker 2: remember the first time I went into a stream. It
- 53:58Speaker 2: was after I've done our pond for many many times,
- 54:01Speaker 2: and I'm going, it's gonna be the same thing. And
- 54:04Speaker 2: I went and I was going, whoa, this is this
- 54:07Speaker 2: is cold.
- 54:09Speaker 1: There's a video of you with a guy and your
- 54:15Speaker 1: looks like a real tough guy too, and you're bringing
- 54:18Speaker 1: him out to the middle of this.
- 54:20Speaker 2: Oh yes, I think that was Jake.
- 54:22Speaker 1: Yes, and yeah you got him in there, and yeah.
- 54:27Speaker 2: Yeah it was. That was the That was his first time.
- 54:30Speaker 1: And he did the dunk too, he did he did.
- 54:33Speaker 2: So I was gonna have coffee with him in Woodstock
- 54:35Speaker 2: to talk about cold exposure and ice bath and stuff,
- 54:39Speaker 2: and he said, well can I can I try it?
- 54:42Speaker 2: And I go, yeah, sure. So we just did the
- 54:44Speaker 2: stream there near the coffee shop. And that was That
- 54:49Speaker 2: was the hardest way you can be initiated, because first
- 54:52Speaker 2: of all, it was cold outside. Yeah, the water was
- 54:57Speaker 2: streaming fast. It was hard. We didn't have a really
- 55:00Speaker 2: great spot, so he had to not only fight the
- 55:04Speaker 2: cold but also make it so he wouldn't be swept away.
- 55:09Speaker 2: So he did great though, and he loved it as well.
- 55:11Speaker 2: But that that was the hardest part. I wouldn't recommend
- 55:14Speaker 2: that for a first time.
- 55:16Speaker 1: But somebody who's who's not like what you do are young.
- 55:22Speaker 1: Is you're laughing and you're bringing You're bringing joy and
- 55:29Speaker 1: laughter to the experience, not hesitation and a little bit
- 55:34Speaker 1: of fear. But the laughter and the positivity that that
- 55:39Speaker 1: you inject is comforting on so many different levels. I'm
- 55:45Speaker 1: going to be okay.
- 55:47Speaker 2: Right, that's the whole thing, right, yeah, exactly, I'm gonna
- 55:51Speaker 2: If I go, oh, be careful, that only freaks him
- 55:56Speaker 2: out more. Sure, so you where And again that's why
- 56:01Speaker 2: in the rubber duckies right right, they seem silly, but
- 56:04Speaker 2: they they really help because your mind goes, oh they're
- 56:08Speaker 2: silly rubber duckies. Here, it can't be that bad, right
- 56:12Speaker 2: do you?
- 56:13Speaker 1: Have you ever been referred to as the wim Hoff
- 56:17Speaker 1: of New England?
- 56:20Speaker 2: I have been. I sometimes say, when you come to
- 56:24Speaker 2: an ice bath with us. It's the the closest thing
- 56:27Speaker 2: to vim Hoff you can get without actually getting vim Hoff.
- 56:32Speaker 1: Have you ever met him?
- 56:33Speaker 2: I have not.
- 56:33Speaker 1: Do you want to?
- 56:34Speaker 2: Sure? Just be great? Fairly? Certainly will at some point.
- 56:39Speaker 2: I don't know, but yeah, yeah.
- 56:42Speaker 1: And he does something that's a little bit next level
- 56:46Speaker 1: where he's and I don't know, is it superhuman? I don't.
- 56:50Speaker 1: I don't know what it is that he's doing. But
- 56:52Speaker 1: he's able to control his breathing and go underwater.
- 56:56Speaker 2: Right. So his method is has three components to it.
- 57:02Speaker 2: One is that a specific breathing method that includes basically
- 57:09Speaker 2: hyperventilating for a little bit and then holding your breath
- 57:11Speaker 2: for a long time and then doing that like two
- 57:14Speaker 2: or three rounds, which is supposed to be really really
- 57:17Speaker 2: great for you. The other component is the ice bath.
- 57:21Speaker 2: The dangerous part is is that people that don't research
- 57:26Speaker 2: it enough they combine the two so they think that
- 57:32Speaker 2: the breathing method that he does is used for the
- 57:36Speaker 2: ice bath, which it is absolutely not. Because his breathing
- 57:41Speaker 2: method you can sort of pass out with, So if
- 57:44Speaker 2: you're sitting in a chair, or if you're laying down
- 57:46Speaker 2: on a couch or something that is Okay, I.
- 57:49Speaker 1: Saw it with Brian Rose and he was explaining exactly that, right.
- 57:53Speaker 2: But if you're doing that in the water, that's very
- 57:57Speaker 2: dangerous because you pass out into and people have passed
- 58:00Speaker 2: away from that. So that is one of the reasons
- 58:03Speaker 2: why we only do the ice bath part of it.
- 58:08Speaker 2: We do not do the the breathing part because it's
- 58:11Speaker 2: it's very easy for people to think that you that
- 58:15Speaker 2: that is the breathing method you should do while going
- 58:17Speaker 2: in the ice bath, which it's absolutely not. They should
- 58:21Speaker 2: be kept completely separate. So that's why I only we
- 58:25Speaker 2: only do the only do the ice bath, and I
- 58:28Speaker 2: guide them through with breathing, but specifically tell people not
- 58:33Speaker 2: to hold their breath.
- 58:35Speaker 1: We're we'll see this this this next Sunday at the
- 58:39Speaker 1: Covered Bridge is half marathon in Woodstock.
- 58:42Speaker 2: Correct, Yes, the finish line is in Quichi.
- 58:45Speaker 1: But where and that's where you'll be.
- 58:47Speaker 2: Yeah, We'll be at the Polo Field in Quicci at
- 58:49Speaker 2: the finish line of the Covered Bridges half Marathon.
- 58:51Speaker 1: Where else can we see you in the coming weeks
- 58:54Speaker 1: and months? Hopefully we'll see.
- 58:57Speaker 2: You at the Yeah, the Heritage Festival, Yes, but but
- 59:02Speaker 2: where where?
- 59:03Speaker 1: When are you going to be in White River Junction next.
- 59:06Speaker 2: Any pop up I do, and I oftentimes so people
- 59:11Speaker 2: can uh follow us on Instagram at the moment at
- 59:16Speaker 2: Arctic Bliss events on Instagram, or they can follow me
- 59:22Speaker 2: on Facebook or on vander Shoot. It's if you see
- 59:26Speaker 2: my picture, you know immediately.
- 59:30Speaker 1: No, there's no confusion there.
- 59:32Speaker 2: Our website is under construction at the moment. A fantastic
- 59:38Speaker 2: team at Haystack Needle is working hard on that, so
- 59:43Speaker 2: that will probably be be up in the in the
- 59:46Speaker 2: next couple of weeks. And usually we on Instagram I
- 59:51Speaker 2: announce where we will be with our next pop up,
- 59:56Speaker 2: but we haven't. I haven't really planned any things yet.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: And people can always book me, right, they can contact
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: me and they can book me for their event, be
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: it bar Mitzwah, graduation, a wedding, corporate event. Like I said,
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: it's it's really great for weddings and corporate events because
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: it's it's so memorable. Once you do it, you'll always
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: remember this specific event. It takes great pictures, right. People
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: always want for their weddings, They always want things to
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: be instagrammable. Sure, everybody going into the ice bath, like
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: the wedding couple going into the ice bath together is unforgettable.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: And then listen, you got some problems with your joints,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: you're going to be on the dance floor for the
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: rest of the damn exactly.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: That's right. Yeah, mental health, it's great for mental health, depression,
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: mental health. I've been two a couple of places that
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: do great things for young adults that deal with anxiety
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: and depression, also great success. Many of them have incorporated
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: cold exposure into their health routine. Yeah, it's really, it's
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: really quite amazing what a simple thing like getting into
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: a bucket of really cold water can do for you.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: And I can talk till I'm blue in the face,
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: pun intended, but you will not get it until you
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: try it once. If you try it once, then it's
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: literally like a light bulb going into your mind, going
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: on in your mind, going, oh, this is what it's like.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: And then and then most everybody that that has tried
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: it sees how fantastic it is and either does incorporate
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: it into their daily, weekly, monthly routine or really wishes
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: they did.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: So many of us want to be able to get
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: off of this medication or that medication. Yeah, we, like
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: you said earlier, we want to find an alternative to
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: an injection of cortison into our joints or whatever it
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: may be. This is this is your answer.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: Yeah. There's a guy on Instagram that we follow. I
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: forgot his name, Camden, Camden something, maybe it's ice cold
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Camden or something. He is he was since he was young.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: He's been on a plethora of mental health medications since
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: he was nine, I think, and ever since he's been
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: going into cold water. He documents his journey of tapering
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: off most of those medications because of the cold exposure
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: that he's doing, which is quite remarkable because you know
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: those mental health medications I don't know their names, but
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: they are they are heavy duty.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: Yeah they are.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: So if you can you can lessen those or somebody
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: eliminate them, it's like spectacular.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: You know, they may provide some benefits in some areas,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: but then they create a whole bunch of problems in
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: other areas.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: Right exactly what quickly? Look, I've been told that I
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: can do this here on this podcast because there are
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: no rules, no rules, it's the best podcast rules.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: We're showing a video of this of this lady that
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: that is is getting in the ice bath right now,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: and it's just shows so many of us in the beginning.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: We we want to we want to hold our breath.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: We want to hold our breath.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and so hang on. I founded this guy, uh
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: cold plunge Cam c am Cold Plunge Cam on Instagram.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: He has like look at this. He has three hundred
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: and sixty thousand followers, and he documents his here using
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: ice bath and cold exports to address mental health. Tapering
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: off antidepressants for the first time in twenty five years.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: I mean, that's that's pretty spectacular twenty.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Five years so for antidepressants. Yeah, yeah, look at this
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: and I'll show him on I'll show him on the monitor.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: There you go, Yeah, there he is. Yeah.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Wow. Man.

- 1:05:02Speaker 2: much he's tapered off all these medications and stuff, and
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: how the cold exposure is really allowing him to do that.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: How many how many times do you hear people say

- 1:06:19Speaker 1: we get the bath, we fill it with ice. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: go let's go, and then we're like we start. But
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: it's natural. It's ok give yourself a break because it's
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: okay to tap the breaks.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: It is okay. But that's why it's good to to
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: do it in a guided environment. Yeah right, contact us,
