Speaker 1: What's up people, Welcome back to the podcast or welcome today.
• 0:29
Speaker 1: I have my good buddy Darren o'lean. It's his third
• 0:32
Speaker 1: time on the podcast. Darren is the superfood hunter to
• 0:37
Speaker 1: end all superfood hunters. He's the author of a great book.
• 0:40
Speaker 1: It's called super Life. It's an awesome book. And today
• 0:44
Speaker 1: we talk about all kinds of stuff. We talk about superfoods,
• 0:47
Speaker 1: of course, we talk about lifestyle habits to reduce anxiety
• 0:52
Speaker 1: and stress and depression. What else did we talk about?
• 0:56
Speaker 2: Talked about kind of sustainable business, doing things right, how
• 1:02
Speaker 2: to help the planet, to voting with your dollars right.
• 1:07
Speaker 1: So Darren's got this new business called Barukas, which is
• 1:13
Speaker 1: the Beru nut, which is this exotic, super nutritious nut
• 1:17
Speaker 1: that tastes like better than peanuts and it's like insanely nutritious.
• 1:20
Speaker 1: So we talk about that and we have show and
• 1:23
Speaker 1: tell with all these crazy superfoods that he has brought
• 1:27
Speaker 1: us from Peru and Brazil. What is this a Baiobal
• 1:31
Speaker 1: This is yeah, bail Bob sou what is it? What
• 1:40
Speaker 1: is what's the difference?
• 1:41
Speaker 2: This is? This is from a palm in the in Brazil.
• 1:45
Speaker 2: So this is uh, it's got oil similar to that
• 1:48
  Speaker 2: of coconut.
• 1:49
Speaker 1: Oil, right, and here we have different variations of maka right,
• 1:53
Speaker 1: the full ball. It's awesome, it's kind so anyway, thanks
• 1:57
Speaker 1: for dropping by. It's a great episode and without further ado,
• 2:01
Speaker 1: please enjoy my conversation with Darren Oleen right while we're
• 2:06
Speaker 1: rolling Welcome to the studio. Hey, we're talking about this
• 2:11
Speaker 1: maca root bulb that I'm that I have in my
• 2:14
Speaker 1: hand that you know, I've been I've been eating maca
• 2:17
Speaker 1: for a long time. I had no idea that this.
• 2:19
Speaker 2: Is what it looks like and that's black maca. So
• 2:21
Speaker 2: the wow. You know, the people think that the characteristics
• 2:25
Speaker 2: of the black maca have a lot of more aphrodisiac
• 2:28
Speaker 2: kind of potency and there's less of it. So you
• 2:32
Speaker 2: typically have the yellow maca that's kind of the biggest,
• 2:37
Speaker 2: and then there's red maca. So then there's some fertility
• 2:40
Speaker 2: with women and at the end of the day, most
• 2:43
Speaker 2: of what's inside. It's usually what they're trying to get
• 2:48
Speaker 2: into is that on the outside layer, that's where some
• 2:51
Speaker 2: of the differences are. But the evidence isn't that strong.
• 2:56
Speaker 2: I really believe that just taking maca in general is kinny.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: In whatever, in whatever form. H yeah, I didn't even
• 3:03
Speaker 1: know there were different varieties of it. Yeah, that's amazing.
• 3:06
Speaker 1: And these are all from Peru.
• 3:07
  Speaker 2: Yeah yeah. Yeah.
• 3:09
Speaker 1: So for those that are listening, it's going to be
• 3:12
Speaker 1: show and tell day with Darren. He brought a case
• 3:16
Speaker 1: full of his wares, all kinds of exotic superfoods in
• 3:20
Speaker 1: their original states. So if you're used to just listening
• 3:24
Speaker 1: to this podcast, you might want to check out the
• 3:26
Speaker 1: YouTube version so you can see what all this stuff
• 3:28
Speaker 1: looks like. And we're going to get into it today.
• 3:30
Speaker 1: So awesome, man, good to have you.
• 3:32
  Speaker 2: It's good.
• 3:33
Speaker 1: Third time on the podcast.
• 3:34
Speaker 2: Yeah, man, third time's a charmer.
• 3:36
Speaker 1: That's right. And we didn't even talk about what we're
• 3:40
Speaker 1: going to talk about today, but you know, we've gone
• 3:43
Speaker 1: over your you know, for those that are new to
• 3:45
Speaker 1: the show, we have done two podcasts. The first one
• 3:47
Speaker 1: was really kind of about your backstory and sort of
• 3:51
Speaker 1: superfoods in a general sense in your book Super Life,
• 3:55
Speaker 1: and then the second one was kind of water focused,
• 3:58
  Speaker 1: as I recall.
• 3:59
  Speaker 2: Yeah, and so.
• 3:59
Speaker 1: Today we're just gonna take it wherever we want to
• 4:02
Speaker 1: take it. I guess what have you been doing? I
• 4:05
Speaker 1: mean since we last spoke. You've gone on a couple adventures.
• 4:08
Speaker 1: I know you went to Brazil summer the time.
• 4:10
Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you know when you super food hunt, you find,
• 4:14
Speaker 2: you find. You may go with one intention, try to
• 4:18
Speaker 2: find something or try to follow up on something. And
• 4:21
Speaker 2: usually when I come back, I have five or ten
• 4:25
Speaker 2: things that I didn't even know existed, because when you're
• 4:28
Speaker 2: in the middle of nowhere and you're in a new
• 4:30
Speaker 2: country or in a new area or ecosystem, inevitably on
• 4:36
Speaker 2: that trail of sometimes hundreds of hours from hiking to
• 4:41
Speaker 2: bikes to water buffaloes, I've literally been on water buffaloes
• 4:46
Speaker 2: before you come back. And so when I was in
• 4:49
Speaker 2: Brazil years ago, I was there on the Amazonian side,
• 4:56
Speaker 2: which is kind of technically upper Brazil, like northern to
• 5:02
Speaker 2: mid is mostly Amazonian geographical area. And yeah, and so
• 5:08
Speaker 2: I was looking for other things. I was looking at
• 5:13
Speaker 2: certain types of palm asai of course, this and the
• 5:18
Speaker 2: theobroma family. This thing called kapou, which is that it's
• 5:23
Speaker 2: like a it's in the cacao family, but it has
• 5:30
Speaker 2: a higher fat content some other properties that are similar
• 5:37
Speaker 2: but don't have the kind of the same energy, kind
• 5:42
Speaker 2: of producing stimulant but delicious. I've never understood why it
• 5:48
Speaker 2: never really came about, because I've played with formulating with
• 5:53
Speaker 2: cacao and kapa and it's it's utterly mouth wateringly delicious.
• 5:58
Speaker 1: And was that something that you not aware of before
• 6:01
Speaker 1: you went on that first adventure to Brazil that you stumbled.
• 6:04
Speaker 2: Upon or no. I had been aware of that from
• 6:07
Speaker 2: the Peruvian side, so I was aware of the couple
• 6:10
Speaker 2: with who was a Portuguese word, So it's primarily in
• 6:13
Speaker 2: the Brazilian side, So I had heard of it, and
• 6:15
Speaker 2: then I had gotten samples, I had done some research.
• 6:19
Speaker 2: But ultimately during that trip, I had a Brazilian reach
• 6:23
Speaker 2: out to me and tell me about this thing that
• 6:27
Speaker 2: I had never heard of before, in the Sahatu, And
• 6:31
  Speaker 2: I'm like, what's the Sahadu? Right? And like it's a
• 6:34
Speaker 2: tropical savannah which is kind of a cousin or the
• 6:38
Speaker 2: lower half of the Brazil Like it's the southern part
• 6:42
Speaker 2: of Brazil. And I was like, whoa, that's a savannah,
• 6:49
Speaker 2: Like that's fascinating. And he talked to me about this
• 6:54
Speaker 2: this bottlezeta tree that comes from there and this thing
• 6:58
Speaker 2: called buruna it and I was like, you know, I'm
• 7:02
Speaker 2: smiling and humbly smiling, going no, I've never heard.
• 7:06
Speaker 1: Ever heard, like, you're the guy who's supposed to know
• 7:08
Speaker 1: all this course, right.
• 7:10
Speaker 2: But that's the beauty. I can never know it. It's
• 7:12
Speaker 2: like the planet is so big and there's so much diversity,
• 7:16
Speaker 2: Like the humbly I picked a fantastic career that I
• 7:20
Speaker 2: can learn for the rest of my life, and so
• 7:24
Speaker 2: of course then I was completely fascinated, and so he
• 7:30
Speaker 2: ends up sending me samples. I started doing some research
• 7:34
Speaker 2: before they got there, and I was like, whoa, there's
• 7:36
Speaker 2: some high nutrient value to this. You know this nut
• 7:41
Speaker 2: And as soon as I taste it, WHOA I was
• 7:47
Speaker 2: life had altered at that point. Yeah, because of this,
• 7:52
Speaker 2: because my hat of course goes on many different ways
• 7:56
Speaker 2: from just the adventure of finding something new to the curiosity,
• 8:02
Speaker 2: but also you put the hat on of what can
• 8:06
Speaker 2: I do with it and how can I get it
• 8:08
Speaker 2: to people, especially if it's highly nutrient dense.
• 8:13
Speaker 1: Right, and at the same time, supporting the communities that produce.
• 8:17
Speaker 2: It will get into It's a massive part of it. Massive.
• 8:21
Speaker 1: Well, talk to me in general a little bit about
• 8:24
Speaker 1: the sahadu and the differences between Sahadu land and rainforest land.
• 8:29
Speaker 1: Because we hear a lot about the Amazonian rainforest and
• 8:32
Speaker 1: the deforestation that's taking place to provide cattle grazing and
• 8:37
Speaker 1: growing feed for cattle. I think it's like a football
• 8:39
Speaker 1: field a second or something like that that's getting cleared.
• 8:42
Speaker 1: You don't hear much of anything about the Sahadu.
• 8:46
Speaker 2: Yeah, the Amazon's about the The last I heard it
• 8:49
Speaker 2: was about the land mass size of France every year
• 8:53
Speaker 2: is being decimated and that and the Amazon saying, like,
• 8:56
Speaker 2: let's just say that it's got the highest pr right,
• 9:00
Speaker 2: it's they are promoting it and people a lot of
• 9:03
Speaker 2: working groups are trying to protect it, right, But what
• 9:06
Speaker 2: is the Sahadu? And and and so I was very
• 9:11
Speaker 2: much fascinated by that, and and and as soon as
• 9:15
Speaker 2: I ended up there, I saw it. And so now
• 9:19
Speaker 2: you're looking at a land mass that is about three
• 9:26
Speaker 2: states of Texas. Uh, it's over a third of the
• 9:32
Speaker 2: all of Brazil. That's like saying, and Brazil is you know,
• 9:37
Speaker 2: US and Brazil are about the same size. So so
• 9:40
Speaker 2: the Sahadu is like over a third of what the
• 9:45
Speaker 2: United States would be.
• 9:46
  Speaker 1: That's unbelievable.
• 9:47
Speaker 3: It's huge, So it's sort of sub EQUATORI in right
• 9:52
Speaker 3: below the equator. Yeah, the rainforest is more equatorial, right yeah,
• 9:58
Speaker 3: and it's I presume a more air yeah.
• 10:02
  Speaker 2: I mean it changes. It's such a vast area. We've
• 10:06
Speaker 2: been looking at it from Bolivia to Portugal to Brazil,
• 10:12
Speaker 2: and it changes a bit, for sure, and the diversity changes,
• 10:15
Speaker 2: and the population of certain botanicals and trees and birds
• 10:19
Speaker 2: and fruits and all that stuff changes here and there.
• 10:23
Speaker 2: But ultimately think of it as like a little bit
• 10:26
Speaker 2: of a desert ye feeling for the most part, with
• 10:32
Speaker 2: a very interesting biodiversity. And which one of the things
• 10:39
Speaker 2: which was very fascinating, we were you know, this is
• 10:42
Speaker 2: the kind of thing you can't find out until you're there.
• 10:45
Speaker 2: And one of the things was number one. We're driving
• 10:49
Speaker 2: through it and you're you're fascinating and fascinated and also
• 10:54
Speaker 2: holding back tears at the same time because you're literally
• 10:57
  Speaker 2: seeing deforestation.
• 11:00
Speaker 1: So it's impacting the Sahadu similar in a way that's
• 11:03
Speaker 1: similar to the rainforest.
• 11:05
Speaker 2: And think of this so only in the last forty years,
• 11:10
Speaker 2: no one really knew other than the people living in there,
• 11:13
Speaker 2: what the Sahadu was. They didn't really do anything with it.
• 11:18
Speaker 2: That was kind of it. Brasilia resurrected kind of in
• 11:22
Speaker 2: the center of it. Once that happened, it gained this
• 11:28
Speaker 2: attention and then all of a sudden, like, oh, this
• 11:31
Speaker 2: is kind of a poor cousin to the Amazon with
• 11:34
Speaker 2: less vegetation that's above ground, so it seems to be
• 11:39
Speaker 2: a little easier to justify, yeah, to destroy. So here's
• 11:45
Speaker 2: the thing. So in forty years, the land mass that's
• 11:49
Speaker 2: that large, they have destroyed it. And the stats are
• 11:53
Speaker 2: between fifty to seventy nine percent of that whole area
• 11:58
Speaker 2: has been deforested in forty years. Oh my god.
• 12:02
Speaker 1: So that gives you So how does that? Sorry to
• 12:04
Speaker 1: interrupt you, but like, how does that occur? Like what
• 12:08
Speaker 1: is the mechanism behind how it how it goes down?
• 12:12
Speaker 1: I would I would assume, you know, I'm envisioning, you know,
• 12:15
Speaker 1: relatively poor indigenous inhabitants who are then offered a check,
• 12:21
Speaker 1: you know, that they can't refuse because there's no other
• 12:23
Speaker 1: way to better provide for their family, and they just relent.
• 12:26
Speaker 1: I mean, is that how it happens?
• 12:28
Speaker 2: For sure? I mean, so, so think about there's this
• 12:31
Speaker 2: kind of this So from an economic From an ecological
• 12:35
Speaker 2: point of view, the Sahadu is kind of buffering and
• 12:39
Speaker 2: tempering the Amazon. They're their cousins. They need, they need,
• 12:43
Speaker 2: they have a symbiosis, right, and so when that's getting disturbed,
• 12:49
Speaker 2: it causes a lot of instability in the Amazon as well,
• 12:53
Speaker 2: which then further accelerates everything the the deforested part. You
• 13:00
Speaker 2: might be whacking it above ground. But here's the interesting thing.
• 13:05
Speaker 2: Some people, experts in country in Brazil say that the
• 13:09
Speaker 2: vegetation is because of deep tap roots, because of huge
• 13:19
Speaker 2: droughts that the plants and the batrozeta tree and these
• 13:23
Speaker 2: plants have deep, deep tap roots, so they're hitting deep aquifers.
• 13:27
Speaker 2: So they have a vegetation below ground that's equal if
• 13:31
Speaker 2: you flipped it up as to the breadth and the
• 13:34
Speaker 2: width and the height of the Amazon. So you're not
• 13:37
Speaker 2: seeing the biomass that's being destroyed from the root structures.
• 13:46
Speaker 1: Right. So there's this incredible, incredibly robust, beautiful vegetation with
• 13:53
Speaker 1: extraordinary biodiversity, but it doesn't meet the eye, right it's
• 13:57
  Speaker 1: below ground.
• 13:58
Speaker 2: You have ninety million species of insects, you have hundreds
• 14:06
Speaker 2: of species of mammals, you have tens of thousand plant diversities.
• 14:13
Speaker 2: You have a diversity that's comparable to the Amazon.
• 14:17
Speaker 1: And what are the sort of you know, alpha land
• 14:21
Speaker 1: mammals in that area, Like what if you're if you
• 14:23
Speaker 1: were you know, trekking through there, like what are you see?
• 14:26
Speaker 2: Well, the funny thing is we had a we had
• 14:28
Speaker 2: a you know, because of this sad situation where you
• 14:32
Speaker 2: have literally like this line that's drawn between what's d
• 14:36
Speaker 2: d forested and then the forest or whatever is left
• 14:40
Speaker 2: in that. And we had a situation where we were
• 14:43
Speaker 2: going through an area and then out of the forest
• 14:47
Speaker 2: runs this anteater that's the size of a California mountain lion,
• 14:53
Speaker 2: huge like huge like nose, and so we we actually
• 15:00
Speaker 2: our ultimate wisdom we try to kind of like he's
• 15:03
Speaker 2: out in the open, kind of vulnerable. So we kind
• 15:05
Speaker 2: of like got jumped out of the car and kind
• 15:08
Speaker 2: of tried to get them back in the forest. I
• 15:12
Speaker 2: don't know whatever that was doing. It was just our instincts.
• 15:14
Speaker 2: So but you know, it's it's you know, it's everything
• 15:20
Speaker 2: from different types of foxes and and things like that.
• 15:24
Speaker 2: There's no large like super predators, but you have a
• 15:30
Speaker 2: you know, when you have insects, when you have birds,
• 15:33
Speaker 2: and you have a few hundred different types of mammals
• 15:37
Speaker 2: and ninety million insects. You have a you have the
• 15:42
Speaker 2: inkling of an incredible powerful ecosystem.
• 15:46
Speaker 1: Right, And who are the who are the interests that
• 15:49
Speaker 1: are behind the deforestation? Is it American? You know, big
• 15:54
Speaker 1: cattle raising companies. Is it Brazilian companies? Like, who's who's
• 15:58
Speaker 1: doing this? Who are the perpetrators?
• 16:00
Speaker 2: I tell you Brazil is so I think they make
• 16:04
Speaker 2: us look not as aggressive with meat production. They are
• 16:09
Speaker 2: so aggressive. You What I was hearing is that you
• 16:12
Speaker 2: literally when you buy land, they force you as a
• 16:17
Speaker 2: mandate to to have cattle, like you can't.
• 16:23
Speaker 1: It's a precondition of actually even purchasing.
• 16:27
Speaker 2: The undertow is that is we want economic stability. But
• 16:32
Speaker 2: the subtext of that is that's cattle. Right, So they're
• 16:39
Speaker 2: pushing this on people and the meat consumption in Brazil
• 16:43
Speaker 2: it is just just right.
• 16:45
Speaker 1: So it's staying in country. They're not exports. Oh yeah,
• 16:47
Speaker 1: they're doing a lot or anything like that. And how
• 16:49
Speaker 1: much of it is for cattle grazing proper versus growing
• 16:54
Speaker 1: the feed for the cattle.
• 16:56
Speaker 2: I don't know the exact stats, but it's ton I mean,
• 16:59
Speaker 2: they're there, the soy corn. It's three things there. The
• 17:06
Speaker 2: cattle are either on it, the land the stripped land,
• 17:11
Speaker 2: or you're growing the feed for that cattle and monocrop culture. Yeah,
• 17:18
Speaker 2: I mean, and you when you literally see it, and
• 17:22
Speaker 2: now having eyes of the medicinal plants and the the
• 17:28
Speaker 2: the baruka nuts and all of that stuff, I can see.
• 17:31
Speaker 2: I can see the economic stability in that, right, I
• 17:35
Speaker 2: can see like, oh, that's that's important, right, And and
• 17:41
Speaker 2: you don't have to do this unsustainable thrashing of the
• 17:47
Speaker 2: land and burning of it. You have a gift right
• 17:52
Speaker 2: there in the ecosystem. And so that kind of gets
• 17:55
Speaker 2: down to like, well, you have to have an economic end.
• 18:00
Speaker 2: You have to be able to make a business work
• 18:03
Speaker 2: in order to go back to those people and back
• 18:06
Speaker 2: to what you said before, which I didn't quite get to,
• 18:09
Speaker 2: and that is, without a doubt, in our Baruka project,
• 18:14
Speaker 2: there is no way that we could even have this
• 18:18
Speaker 2: business if it wasn't one hundred percent supported by the
• 18:23
Speaker 2: indigenous people because they're on the land and the land
• 18:28
Speaker 2: mass is massive. So we've spent years meeting the chiefs,
• 18:35
Speaker 2: meeting the head villagers, traveling around the areas, setting up
• 18:40
Speaker 2: the infrastructure because this is a nightmare for a business.
• 18:44
  Speaker 2: It's a nightmare try it's a wild collected It's there's
• 18:48
Speaker 2: no monocropping brewe nuts. There's no, there's no, it's not
• 18:52
Speaker 2: happening any person of you know, an entrepreneurial brain who
• 18:57
Speaker 2: doesn't understand indigenous work and understanding the real fair trade
• 19:04
Speaker 2: of how to make these people very happy and their
• 19:07
Speaker 2: wild collections and support them. It's a if you plant
• 19:14
Speaker 2: a tree, guess what you plan it, It's going to
• 19:17
Speaker 2: take fifteen years for you to even get the fruit
• 19:20
Speaker 2: from it. So it's not like, hey, good idea, let's
• 19:23
Speaker 2: let's jump into the the burrew trade here. And it's
• 19:28
Speaker 2: just and so you have to spend a lot of
• 19:31
Speaker 2: time organizing all of the infrastructure that it takes.
• 19:35
Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, well you're literally inverting the paradigm from one
• 19:39
Speaker 1: that sees the forest for the you know, through the trees,
• 19:45
Speaker 1: and instead flip that to see the tree in the forest,
• 19:49
Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And having to overcome the
• 19:52
Speaker 1: momentum of what has sustained you know, that culture for
• 19:56
Speaker 1: so long to come in and say look there's a
• 19:58
Speaker 1: better way, there's a more sustainable a way that will
• 20:01
Speaker 1: empower you long term and you know, feed your children
• 20:05
Speaker 1: for generations to come. But me, Darren White Eye, coming
• 20:09
Speaker 1: down to Brazil, You're gonna have to trust me, you
• 20:12
Speaker 1: know what I mean. That's that's a huge obstacle to overcome.
• 20:18
Speaker 2: And you know, many times, Rich I've been in that situation,
• 20:21
Speaker 2: Like so many times, someone at some point has offered
• 20:26
Speaker 2: them something for their land or some sort of deal,
• 20:31
Speaker 2: whether it's in country and they want to sell the nuts,
• 20:34
Speaker 2: or or it's some other medicinal plant some other country.
• 20:37
Speaker 2: I've been in that situation so many times. And here's
• 20:39
Speaker 2: the thing that when you show up, it matters a lot.
• 20:44
Speaker 2: When you sit down and be with them and eat
• 20:47
Speaker 2: lunch with them and spend time with them and get
• 20:50
Speaker 2: to understand them and see what they need and really
• 20:54
Speaker 2: come about it from that perspective, and then are super consistent.
• 21:01
Speaker 2: What we say is what we're going to do, and
• 21:03
Speaker 2: we're going to keep doing that. Because they have had
• 21:06
Speaker 2: so many and I'm talking people in general. I'm talking
• 21:09
Speaker 2: about small farmers around the world, small collectors around the world.
• 21:13
Speaker 2: It is the same thing that they have people who've
• 21:18
Speaker 2: promised them the world and then when it actually came,
• 21:22
Speaker 2: they didn't have an economic stability, or they didn't have
• 21:25
Speaker 2: a business. They wanted a business, but they didn't have
• 21:27
Speaker 2: the understanding of how to run it, or whatever the
• 21:31
Speaker 2: case is. They may have had a good intention, but
• 21:35
Speaker 2: ultimately these people go out and do a bunch of
• 21:37
Speaker 2: work and then they don't get paid for it, and
• 21:39
Speaker 2: so then they get you know, they it wears them
• 21:44
Speaker 2: out over time, and so then you're the next guy
• 21:48
Speaker 2: showing up. But for us, now it's been you know,
• 21:52
Speaker 2: in terms of Bruga, you know, it's been two and
• 21:54
Speaker 2: a half years. So we basically said listen, and this,
• 21:59
Speaker 2: by the way, I think all business should be done
• 22:03
Speaker 2: from the foundation in the ground. I think that's that's
• 22:06
Speaker 2: where a Customers are getting smarter because I've always believed like,
• 22:11
Speaker 2: treat people as if they know even if they don't,
• 22:13
Speaker 2: you know, And and that's from a consuct customer point
• 22:18
Speaker 2: of view. So you know, it's it's it's treating these
• 22:22
Speaker 2: people like, what do you need? What do you what's
• 22:27
Speaker 2: fair to pay you? And then we'll pay them a
• 22:30
Speaker 2: little more with some incentives along the way, because you
• 22:33
Speaker 2: cannot it's like the lottery. You can't just give them
• 22:36
Speaker 2: a bunch of money they need to grow into that.
• 22:39
Speaker 2: I know farmers in Peru that I've known for a decade,
• 22:42
Speaker 2: and when the Chinese came in and overpaid one hundred
• 22:48
Speaker 2: times for this stuff because and I'm referring to Maka,
• 22:54
Speaker 2: these farmers, I understand they have to take the money.
• 22:57
Speaker 2: And they these the Chinese are coming in with suitcase
• 23:00
Speaker 2: is full of money and then stealing it through the
• 23:04
Speaker 2: old drug routes because this is technically legal to leave
• 23:09
Speaker 2: the country and its raw state.
• 23:10
Speaker 1: Oh wow, I didn't know that. Yeah, that's interesting. And
• 23:14
Speaker 1: so then it just becomes it doesn't become a long
• 23:18
  Speaker 1: term enterprise.
• 23:19
Speaker 2: It's just a scorched earth situation totally. And then those
• 23:22
Speaker 2: people usually with all of that money that they're being
• 23:25
Speaker 2: paid a hundred times more, what happens. It's the lottery situation.
• 23:29
Speaker 2: So they make a whole bunch of money. They don't
• 23:31
Speaker 2: understand it fully because they're indigenous people and they just
• 23:35
Speaker 2: know how to work and stuff. So when you get
• 23:37
Speaker 2: a ton of money that it's caused family problems and
• 23:41
Speaker 2: the same problems it causes here. Or they're human, so
• 23:45
Speaker 2: when you work with them, you understand what they need,
• 23:49
Speaker 2: what's fair just above that and then incentives along the way,
• 23:53
Speaker 2: like listen, we will pay you a fair amount over
• 23:57
Speaker 2: what you're used to paying for the next twenty years.
• 24:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's the consistency rights. It's creating an infrastructure and
• 24:05
Speaker 1: a long term plan that can weather you know, whether
• 24:08
Speaker 1: it's drought or a crop fails or something like that. Right,
• 24:11
Speaker 1: because we've talked about this, like that's what's sort of
• 24:17
Speaker 1: you know, sidelined a lot of these other plays to
• 24:19
Speaker 1: go down there and develop businesses with these indigenous plants
• 24:23
Speaker 1: that they don't have the infrastructure or you know, the
• 24:26
Speaker 1: kind of human resources and long term view to kind
• 24:31
Speaker 1: of weather those patterns, and so then a crop fails
• 24:34
Speaker 1: and then you can't pay, and then there's you know,
• 24:37
Speaker 1: too much of it or you know whatever, Like how
• 24:39
Speaker 1: do you maintain that level of consistency so that you
• 24:42
Speaker 1: engender that trust totally? Because you know, I'm just envisioning
• 24:45
Speaker 1: the small farmer. It's like, oh, here's Darren. He shows up, Like, well,
• 24:49
Speaker 1: why should I First of all, why should I believe you?
• 24:51
Speaker 1: I've been burned, you know, a million times over and
• 24:53
Speaker 1: the cattle industry is offering me this check, Like you
• 24:57
Speaker 1: have to convince me, why I should say no to that.
• 24:59
Speaker 1: They check, that's guaranteed that all my friends are taking.
• 25:03
  Speaker 1: If I don't and I go your route, perhaps I
• 25:05
Speaker 1: become a pariah in my community, or you know, I'm
• 25:09
Speaker 1: taking Why should I shoulder this risk?
• 25:12
Speaker 2: Right, Ultimately you're going at least what you have on
• 25:16
Speaker 2: your side is common sense and sustainability of the environment. Oftentimes,
• 25:22
Speaker 2: these people live by the land, they live on the land.
• 25:26
Speaker 2: They live very simply, so they're usually in a situation
• 25:30
Speaker 2: that's dire. So therefore they'll take these, you know, situations
• 25:35
Speaker 2: so they can live. They're living kind of day to day.
• 25:39
Speaker 2: So when you show up more than once, and you
• 25:43
Speaker 2: have your teams that come back and show more, show
• 25:46
Speaker 2: up over and over again, and you say, listen, don't
• 25:50
Speaker 2: cut all these down, do as much work as you want,
• 25:53
Speaker 2: and we'll pay. We'll buy this is what we say.
• 25:56
Speaker 2: We'll buy everything you're willing to collect for the next
• 26:00
  Speaker 2: twenty years.
• 26:01
Speaker 1: And the way it works is these villages have like
• 26:05
Speaker 1: receiverships right where so the various farmers collect the buru
• 26:09
Speaker 1: nuts and they get deposited into like one location, and
• 26:12
Speaker 1: then you kind of gather all of those.
• 26:14
Speaker 2: Collections of right, tons of locations and tons of thousands
• 26:18
  Speaker 2: of families.
• 26:19
Speaker 1: So it's not agriculture in the traditional sense of them,
• 26:22
Speaker 1: like clearing a plot of land and growing these trees.
• 26:25
Speaker 1: It's just gathering what is already falling, sort of native.
• 26:28
Speaker 2: To the land. So this is it. So that's a
• 26:31
Speaker 2: brew knut. This is a ba So this.
• 26:34
Speaker 1: Is the thing with these things. They have this incredible,
• 26:36
Speaker 1: incredibly hard shell on them. Right, this is almost like
• 26:40
  Speaker 1: a stone.
• 26:40
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, very much.
• 26:41
Speaker 1: So those are listening. It's about an inch and a
• 26:44
Speaker 1: half long, about a little maybe an inch.
• 26:46
Speaker 2: Wide, yep. So on the outside it's a fruit layer.
• 26:50
Speaker 2: So technically it's a seed. So there's one nut per fruit.
• 26:54
Speaker 2: So you can hear it, right if you shake it.
• 26:56
Speaker 2: If you shake it, you can hear it. One nut
• 26:58
Speaker 2: technically called a drup.
• 26:59
Speaker 1: And the nut is like a centimeter long, right, it's
• 27:03
Speaker 1: smaller than a peanut.
• 27:04
  Speaker 2: Right. Well, yeah, it's about a gram it's a gram
• 27:08
Speaker 2: per about average twenty five grams per fruit, right, right.
• 27:12
Speaker 1: And so the traditional way of extracting the nut from
• 27:16
Speaker 1: the shell is what like a sledgehammer.
• 27:18
Speaker 2: Well yeah. The interesting thing traditional traditional meaning it is
• 27:22
Speaker 2: far back is and again you don't find this out
• 27:26
Speaker 2: until you're actually there and you talk to enough people
• 27:29
Speaker 2: that have been involved in this stuff and villages and stuff,
• 27:32
Speaker 2: and so what they used to do is they so
• 27:34
Speaker 2: the only way you can collect these, you can't is
• 27:37
Speaker 2: a tree. But you can't collect it early it literally
• 27:41
Speaker 2: because the seed is not complete. It has to drop,
• 27:46
Speaker 2: it has to fall on the ground. So this is
• 27:48
Speaker 2: all fallen fruit. So when it falls then they collect it, right,
• 27:55
Speaker 2: So so indigenously thousands of years they used to take it.
• 28:00
Speaker 2: And so at the end of an embered evening of fire,
• 28:05
Speaker 2: they would throw a bunch of these on the fire,
• 28:08
Speaker 2: and when the fire would go out and they'd wake
• 28:11
Speaker 2: up the next morning, all of these were roasted and
• 28:15
Speaker 2: so then they would eat more easily, be able to
• 28:17
Speaker 2: break this very hard shell open and then crack it open.
• 28:21
Speaker 2: It was a roasted nut because the anti nutrients that
• 28:24
Speaker 2: are in here and it's raw state. Because it's like
• 28:27
Speaker 2: a good question. People always ask like, well, I want
• 28:30
Speaker 2: to eat them roll and I'm like, well, but you
• 28:31
Speaker 2: can't because they're not made that way. So like there's
• 28:35
Speaker 2: a group of foods obviously that you can cook that
• 28:40
Speaker 2: bring out the nutrients. So we did all the tests
• 28:42
Speaker 2: after roasting, and that's where the nutrient superiority really just
• 28:47
  Speaker 2: blew us away.
• 28:49
Speaker 1: Right, So let's take a step back. Like you, you're
• 28:52
Speaker 1: the super food hunter, even spending you know, I don't know,
• 28:56
Speaker 1: twenty years going down into these exotic locals and forest
• 29:01
Speaker 1: foraging for you know, crazy exotics superfoods. And you got
• 29:05
Speaker 1: a whole bunch in front of you right here, you know,
• 29:08
Speaker 1: everything from macca. What is this huge?
• 29:11
Speaker 2: This is beao bob right there, baobob. This is so,
• 29:14
Speaker 2: this is beao bob from Africa and Madagascar from a
• 29:19
Speaker 2: baobob tree, which is a sacred tree.
• 29:21
Speaker 1: It looks like the size of a small coconut.
• 29:23
Speaker 2: Yes, it's a little ornamental, right, It hangs and it drops.
• 29:27
Speaker 2: And the funny thing is that's it's already dried powder.
• 29:31
Speaker 2: You know. Some people ask, well, how do you get
• 29:32
Speaker 2: dried powder? It's actually already dried. So you break it
• 29:36
Speaker 2: and this is what it's like inside, and there's a
• 29:39
Speaker 2: seed and then you just you separate the seed in
• 29:43
Speaker 2: the powder and literally put it in a bag and
• 29:46
  Speaker 2: you're getting tons of vitamin C. Yeah, there's a seed
• 29:51
Speaker 2: in there, so don't crunch on it. But you can. Yeah,
• 29:53
Speaker 2: all right, I'll eat it after Yeah. So it's a
• 29:57
Speaker 2: very important food in Africa, and Madagascar never really took
• 30:05
Speaker 2: an off. I think it's because it's, you know, again,
• 30:11
Speaker 2: you're talking with villagers. You're talking with you gotta. I
• 30:15
Speaker 2: sat down with presidents of the village in the middle
• 30:19
Speaker 2: of nowhere, and you have to organize these things. So
• 30:24
Speaker 2: it's you know, I'm one person, so some of these
• 30:28
Speaker 2: things I have to just you know, manage my time
• 30:31
Speaker 2: and my resources to figure that out.
• 30:34
Speaker 1: But you know what I'm getting at is, you know,
• 30:36
Speaker 1: as somebody who has created this encyclopedia of these foods
• 30:40
Speaker 1: and there are nutritional benefits, you've made this decision to
• 30:44
Speaker 1: like zero in on the burunot and like really pioneer
• 30:48
Speaker 1: the introduction of this nutritious superfood into the you know,
• 30:53
Speaker 1: Western world, that developed world marketplace. So why the buruna?
• 30:59
Speaker 1: Like what is it about this not that made you
• 31:00
Speaker 1: go all right, I'm just going to put all my
• 31:02
Speaker 1: energy into this one thing, as opposed to you know,
• 31:05
Speaker 1: the Bao bob or one of these other.
• 31:07
Speaker 2: Ones, Baba sous or maringa, and the Maringa's got an
• 31:10
Speaker 2: whole other story. But you know, It was several things.
• 31:15
Speaker 2: It was the nutritional profile compared to anyon other nut
• 31:20
  Speaker 2: is far superior.
• 31:22
Speaker 1: So what is the profile.
• 31:23
Speaker 2: So it's got three times a fiber of any nut,
• 31:27
Speaker 2: which is just ridiculous, right, and we're all lacking fiber.
• 31:32
Speaker 2: The protein is superior than any nut. It's close to
• 31:36
Speaker 2: a peanut with protein. But it's got all the amino acids,
• 31:40
Speaker 2: which also is not heard of in a nut.
• 31:44
Speaker 1: So complete amino acid amino.
• 31:46
Speaker 2: Acid profile, the antioxidants which is incredible three hundred and
• 31:53
Speaker 2: seventy plus percent more than almonds. So it is just this,
• 32:00
Speaker 2: and then the micro nutrients copper, zinc, calcium, magnesium, just
• 32:07
Speaker 2: wickedly high end. And then you have a third less
• 32:13
Speaker 2: calories from fat than any other nun So you have
• 32:18
Speaker 2: this and then on top of the just the wow
• 32:22
Speaker 2: of the nutrients, which was hitting me as soon as
• 32:25
Speaker 2: I tasted it. I was like, oh, oh my god,
• 32:29
Speaker 2: there's no American barrier to entry because it tastes like
• 32:34
Speaker 2: a peanut. Some people say it tastes like up, you know,
• 32:37
Speaker 2: popcorn went to bed with a cashew. Like it's just
• 32:41
Speaker 2: this incredible, incredible taste profile on top of the nutrients,
• 32:49
Speaker 2: on top of the taste. And then you know why
• 32:52
Speaker 2: we're talking so much about the environment is because it's
• 32:55
Speaker 2: so intimately connected to preserving this huge land mass. And
• 33:01
Speaker 2: for me rich when I've spin out so much in
• 33:06
Speaker 2: the world, I am under no delusion that if we
• 33:11
Speaker 2: want to do sustainable things, it's not going to be
• 33:15
Speaker 2: necessarily from the government. It's not going to be from
• 33:18
Speaker 2: some great organization that's going to solve all of our
• 33:23
Speaker 2: worldly problems. It's literally I see deforestation from village to village.
• 33:30
Speaker 2: Deforestation doesn't necessarily just happen by some person coming in
• 33:35
Speaker 2: wiping out the land mass of France. It's small things
• 33:39
Speaker 2: added up over time. And so I really believe that
• 33:44
Speaker 2: the and we know this by creating value back to
• 33:48
Speaker 2: the Bouto Zeta tree and proving to the indigenous people
• 33:54
Speaker 2: that we stand for you, we stand for the environment,
• 33:59
Speaker 2: and we say what we we are going to do
• 34:03
Speaker 2: and follow that up. That to me is an actionable
• 34:07
Speaker 2: thing that we can do to prevent economic environmental destruction.
• 34:17
Speaker 1: Yeah, if you want to combat a negative market force,
• 34:20
Speaker 1: you have to create and produce a counter veiling sustainable
• 34:26
Speaker 1: market force with with equal heft and power. Right, So
• 34:32
Speaker 1: this is the seed literally the seed of doing that
• 34:35
Speaker 1: and how do you I have a bunch of observations,
• 34:38
Speaker 1: but first of all, like, how do you ensure that
• 34:43
Speaker 1: that you that this endeavor will continue to protect these people,
• 34:49
Speaker 1: preserve the land and and sort of empower them to
• 34:53
Speaker 1: uh to preserve their indigenous lifestyle and to the extent
• 34:59
Speaker 1: that they can, you know, put up a stop sign
• 35:02
Speaker 1: to the countervailing market force that wants to clear the
• 35:04
  Speaker 1: land for grazing.
• 35:05
Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, I think it's everything we've talked about in
• 35:08
Speaker 2: terms of the only way that that can start is
• 35:14
Speaker 2: by going and talking to them and seeing who they are,
• 35:19
Speaker 2: what they are, what are their problems.
• 35:21
Speaker 1: And are they like what is the organizational structure? Is
• 35:24
Speaker 1: it just a loose affiliation of villages and farmers? Is
• 35:27
Speaker 1: there like elders that you have to go to, Like
• 35:29
Speaker 1: what is it? What is it Like when you go in,
• 35:31
Speaker 1: you're like, all right, who's the guy I gotta talk
• 35:33
  Speaker 1: to you?
• 35:33
Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean the amount of quote unquote meetings and
• 35:38
Speaker 2: interviews we've had from the head researchers to the we
• 35:43
Speaker 2: go to the universities, who's studying this, who's doing their
• 35:47
Speaker 2: doctoral thesis? Like, we've had meetings with all these people,
• 35:51
Speaker 2: and then we're like, Okay, who's the guy that's done
• 35:54
Speaker 2: the organization, who's also all of the all the processors
• 35:59
Speaker 2: that have been trying trying to make this work in country.
• 36:01
Speaker 2: Who are all they who's the head organized organizers? And
• 36:06
Speaker 2: now who's the head chiefs Because ultimately, yeah, it's these
• 36:10
Speaker 2: chiefs that are having some sort of political understanding of
• 36:19
Speaker 2: what's going on. So you have to get from as
• 36:23
Speaker 2: many angles as possible. You got to get exposed. You
• 36:27
Speaker 2: got to have conversations exhaustive over and over and over
• 36:34
Speaker 2: and say the same thing, we are here. And then
• 36:37
Speaker 2: over time you find those people that have the same values.
• 36:43
Speaker 2: You find people that have not done things well because
• 36:47
Speaker 2: everyone's human. You have failed NGO reforestation projects. You have
• 36:55
Speaker 2: all kinds of stories that you're seeing, and so you're
• 36:58
Speaker 2: at the end of trips. You just got downloaded in
• 37:03
Speaker 2: a PhD of what this real situation is. And so
• 37:09
Speaker 2: now kind of the aftermath of that is, oh, that
• 37:14
Speaker 2: guy does this. So if we're going to plant trees,
• 37:17
Speaker 2: which we are, right, he's the head of the nursery.
• 37:24
Speaker 2: He understands graphing, he understands the strength of the tree,
• 37:27
Speaker 2: he knows the numbers. He knows how to distribute them.
• 37:30
Speaker 2: He knows all of that. So that's the guy. And
• 37:32
Speaker 2: then okay, that chief, she's completely on board. It was
• 37:36
Speaker 2: a woman too, badass. One of the chiefs is a
• 37:39
Speaker 2: badass woman, which is so cool. She was like in
• 37:42
Speaker 2: her thirties. Wow, just completely I was just stunned. Very smart,
• 37:47
Speaker 2: very articulate, And how do you.
• 37:51
Speaker 1: Prevent them from pulling them off the trees before they're
• 37:55
Speaker 1: fully ripe and then delivering you, you know, a batch
• 37:59
  Speaker 1: that's not work.
• 38:00
Speaker 2: Well, that's our quality control, our standards, which is all
• 38:05
Speaker 2: you know, the Brazilian standard won't work. And so we've
• 38:09
Speaker 2: had horrible situations where you're seeing and this happens a
• 38:14
Speaker 2: lot indigenously. They're just processing this stuff and cracking it
• 38:19
Speaker 2: and throwing it in bags that were once you know,
• 38:22
Speaker 2: fertilizer and like you know, you're going, oh yeah, this
• 38:26
  Speaker 2: won't work for.
• 38:27
Speaker 1: The Well, this is endemic in the superfood industry in general.
• 38:30
Speaker 1: And we talked about this a little bit before. You know,
• 38:33
Speaker 1: the maringa, the nutritional benefit that you think you're getting
• 38:36
Speaker 1: from the maringa that you're buying at your natural food
• 38:38
Speaker 1: market probably isn't delivering on the promise. That's the case
• 38:43
Speaker 1: of most of them, because there isn't this kind of
• 38:45
Speaker 1: quality control. There isn't enough regulation to ensure that the
• 38:50
Speaker 1: processing methods are are what they should be, and there's
• 38:54
Speaker 1: an uneducated or under educated public to be able to
• 38:57
Speaker 1: differentiate so so much so that I mean, I think
• 39:01
Speaker 1: your your estimates were like basically it's all garbage, like
• 39:04
Speaker 1: with a very few exceptions. When you go to you know,
• 39:07
Speaker 1: spend your hard earned dollars, and these things are expensive
• 39:10
Speaker 1: for sure, you know, to make sure that you're actually
• 39:12
Speaker 1: getting what you think you're getting.
• 39:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I mean rich My I never The
• 39:19
Speaker 2: only reason I started superfood hunting is because and that
• 39:23
Speaker 2: wasn't even a term I gave myself for sure. It
• 39:26
Speaker 2: was because my father was an agricultural professor from in Minnesota.
• 39:32
Speaker 2: I grew up around farmers, I grew up around some
• 39:35
Speaker 2: sense of the business around it. And by playing with
• 39:42
Speaker 2: these things and formulating with them and looking at them,
• 39:45
Speaker 2: how would you not have the morality and ethics of
• 39:50
Speaker 2: showing up and seeing where they're from, how they're handled, how, what,
• 39:57
Speaker 2: what's the real history, what's the real usage, and how
• 40:03
Speaker 2: do you process things? To do what My goal is
• 40:09
Speaker 2: a catalyst to let these things, all of these things
• 40:13
Speaker 2: in front of me, all of these said superfoods are
• 40:16
Speaker 2: just a catalyst for these nutrients to get to people
• 40:21
Speaker 2: so that those people can thrive. Period that my why
• 40:28
Speaker 2: is way beyond superfood hunting. Because I suffered as a kid.
• 40:32
Speaker 2: I was having issues and challenges as a kid. I
• 40:37
Speaker 2: realized finally that what I was putting in my mouth
• 40:42
Speaker 2: made a difference in my brain, made a difference in
• 40:44
Speaker 2: my body, made a difference in my outlook. So that
• 40:48
Speaker 2: was in my DNA. So to be able to go
• 40:51
Speaker 2: out is it to me and find these things and
• 40:55
Speaker 2: preserve the quality, and preserve these things that I've been
• 41:00
Speaker 2: used for thousands and thousands of years for really good reason.
• 41:06
Speaker 2: It is my mission to make sure that when people
• 41:10
Speaker 2: are they're hard earned money and they're not getting quality,
• 41:16
Speaker 2: they're not even getting active compounds that they were meant
• 41:19
Speaker 2: to get by by buying these that's a shame because
• 41:24
  Speaker 2: they're they're then walking around going, well, I didn't do
• 41:27
Speaker 2: anything for me, right.
• 41:28
  Speaker 1: It's it's downright fraudulent. And you're entering a marketplace like
• 41:31
Speaker 1: standing on the shoulders of an industry that for decades
• 41:35
Speaker 1: and generations has thrived in an environment of non transparency, right,
• 41:43
Speaker 1: and we're now entering this new.
• 41:47
  Speaker 4: Era.
• 41:48
Speaker 1: You know, a generation of people who grew up on
• 41:51
Speaker 1: the Internet and expect a certain level of transparency, demand
• 41:55
Speaker 1: it from the corporations and the you know, the companies
• 42:00
Speaker 1: that they choose to choose to you know, purchase their
• 42:05
Speaker 1: products from. And there is I'm seeing like a renewed
• 42:10
Speaker 1: sense of responsibility from business owners, startups, you know, not
• 42:15
Speaker 1: just in food but across the board to provide that
• 42:18
Speaker 1: level of transparency and to connect the consumer with the
• 42:23
Speaker 1: not just the processes, but the people that are on
• 42:26
Speaker 1: the ground who are creating the products that they're patronizing.
• 42:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, and drop the transparency, like drop the wall, and
• 42:35
Speaker 2: here they are. These are the real things. Guess where
• 42:38
Speaker 2: I had to go? You know, how to get now,
• 42:40
  Speaker 2: you guys.
• 42:40
Speaker 1: So it's like we have this joke, Derek and I like,
• 42:43
Speaker 1: I'll go to like the fancy Arawon market, which is
• 42:46
Speaker 1: like the natural foods market out here where everything's super expensive,
• 42:50
Speaker 1: and I'll peruse the superfoods aisle. You know, there's this
• 42:53
Speaker 1: aisles and aisles of like, you know, every product you
• 42:56
Speaker 1: can imagine and plenty of things that I've never heard of,
• 42:59
Speaker 1: and I'll take pictures of Like I'm like, this happened
• 43:02
Speaker 1: with Maringo. I was like, okay, I need to get
• 43:04
Speaker 1: I want to get the kind Marin Maringo like. And
• 43:07
Speaker 1: so I'm taking pictures of all the different options at Aaron,
• 43:09
Speaker 1: I'm sending to you, what about this one? When you're like, no,
• 43:12
Speaker 1: don't get down, what about this one? What about this one?
• 43:15
  Speaker 2: It's probably okay.
• 43:16
Speaker 1: Yeah, And I feel like there there needs to be
• 43:18
Speaker 1: some oversight and standards because I'm more educated about this
• 43:23
Speaker 1: stuff than the average consumer. So what if you're just like, hey,
• 43:26
Speaker 1: I heard Darren. He told me I should get this.
• 43:28
Speaker 1: It's cool. You go to whatever is available to you
• 43:32
Speaker 1: and you're either overwhelmed with the options or there's only
• 43:35
Speaker 1: one on the shelf if that and you're like, well,
• 43:38
Speaker 1: I'll take that. And you showed me the difference between
• 43:41
Speaker 1: like a pure Maringa which has this deep green. Oh,
• 43:44
Speaker 1: there you have it. You have it, Like, look at
• 43:46
Speaker 1: how beautiful that green is a little smell that so.
• 43:50
Speaker 2: It's a sag of like that's yours, by the way.
• 43:53
Speaker 1: Wow, that's amazing. So did you did you hand harvest this.
• 43:56
Speaker 2: That was yeah, that was done in conjunction with the
• 43:59
Speaker 2: Navajo Nation in Arizona. I have a friend who does
• 44:04
Speaker 2: operations and that the Nappy as they call them, the
• 44:07
Speaker 2: Nab Nation, are doing a big push to move from
• 44:13
Speaker 2: mono you know, straight up mono pesticide agriculture to organic
• 44:19
Speaker 2: and stuff. So that was like a pet project. But
• 44:22
Speaker 2: it was one of those, you know, things that I
• 44:25
Speaker 2: had to kind of buy my time, and I didn't
• 44:28
Speaker 2: have enough time to to fully get into the production
• 44:33
Speaker 2: of meringue at the moment.
• 44:34
Speaker 1: But you have kind of you do. You're kind of
• 44:36
Speaker 1: doing this on the side, right, Like you got a
• 44:38
Speaker 1: plot of land out in the desert where.
• 44:39
Speaker 2: You're yeah, yeah, but proving. So I wanted to prove,
• 44:43
Speaker 2: like listen, here in the United States, I can grow
• 44:47
Speaker 2: and find an area that maringa will thrive, right. So
• 44:50
Speaker 2: we did, and I got a bunch of really really
• 44:55
Speaker 2: competent harvesters or a lot of experience in the in
• 45:00
Speaker 2: the organic world, and we did this little pilot project
• 45:04
Speaker 2: and once we harvested it, it's friends of mine who
• 45:09
Speaker 2: owned some companies we did a little I convinced them
• 45:12
Speaker 2: to let me, you know, use their processing line, and
• 45:16
Speaker 2: we did it, and the nutritional value blew me away.
• 45:21
Speaker 2: Like I pulled this top whole like wholesale one that
• 45:27
Speaker 2: they sell to most of the companies out there, and
• 45:30
Speaker 2: then I pulled the top retail one. I'm not going
• 45:33
Speaker 2: to name these names, but and I did the nutritional
• 45:38
Speaker 2: value of this and it was two to three times
• 45:43
Speaker 2: most of the micro nutrients. And so that that goes
• 45:46
Speaker 2: back to what I'm saying, like and part of what
• 45:49
Speaker 2: I want people to get the nutrients so that they
• 45:55
Speaker 2: can combat this modern day stressful world. That's a whole
• 45:58
Speaker 2: other conversation in this underwhelming nutrient food that we have,
• 46:08
Speaker 2: so that you're not pulling around this suffering. You know,
• 46:12
Speaker 2: I want people to freaking live. That's why I'm doing
• 46:16
Speaker 2: this stuff, Like I'm fascinated by it. But ultimately, I
• 46:20
Speaker 2: want people to consume the greatest foods in the world
• 46:23
Speaker 2: so they can not just exist, but they can actually
• 46:27
Speaker 2: you know, thrive and have enough energy to kick some
• 46:31
Speaker 2: ass and live the kind of dream life they want.
• 46:34
Speaker 1: That. Yeah, I think that's that's something that gets lost
• 46:38
Speaker 1: in the conversation about nutrition. It's not just about like
• 46:41
Speaker 1: losing weight or you know, promoting longevity. These are great things,
• 46:46
Speaker 1: but you know, if you can rejuvenate yourself to a
• 46:50
Speaker 1: point where you truly are thriving in an optimal state,
• 46:55
Speaker 1: then the conversation needs to be about what you're going
• 46:58
Speaker 1: to do with that, right, And I think something that
• 47:02
Speaker 1: gets underserved in the conversation about Darren is that I
• 47:07
Speaker 1: think you know, like you're very clear, and you said
• 47:10
Speaker 1: this to me many times, like I know what I'm
• 47:11
Speaker 1: here on earth to do, Like I'm very clear about that.
• 47:15
Speaker 1: But this is really like a spiritual odyssey for you,
• 47:19
Speaker 1: you know, and you're coming from like this profound spiritual place.
• 47:23
Speaker 1: I know you've done a lot of work in that arena,
• 47:26
Speaker 1: and so it's much more than just like, hey, healthy food.
• 47:30
Speaker 2: Well he's you know, talking about addiction hitting my life.
• 47:35
Speaker 2: You know when my dad I've said the story, so
• 47:37
Speaker 2: I don't need to get into it. But in two
• 47:39
Speaker 2: thousand and five, when my dad passed away from thirty
• 47:42
Speaker 2: years of sobriety and started drinking again, it was when
• 47:45
Speaker 2: you when I lost my father, there was something that
• 47:49
Speaker 2: hit me so bloody deeply through that pain that I
• 47:54
Speaker 2: was like Darren, sorry, audience, cook fucking around. You know,
• 48:00
Speaker 2: I mean, it's like you quit dabbling in this stuff.
• 48:05
Speaker 2: You've been to these things, you've seen things, take that
• 48:08
Speaker 2: knowledge and do something with it. And that and that
• 48:12
Speaker 2: to me has never left me. It never will. And
• 48:16
Speaker 2: so it expresses itself in super foods, it expresses itself
• 48:20
Speaker 2: on other projects, it expresses itself in You know why
• 48:25
Speaker 2: I called my book super Life is because ultimately underneath
• 48:29
Speaker 2: all of it rich I do want people. I want myself,
• 48:34
Speaker 2: I want you, I want the camera guys. I want
• 48:37
Speaker 2: people to live a super life like I really do.
• 48:40
Speaker 2: Like because the ladder is just pain, suffering and existing
• 48:47
Speaker 2: and we're all gonna hit that. But getting and cultivating
• 48:51
Speaker 2: the skills and getting the nutrient value so that you
• 48:55
Speaker 2: don't you have the you have more tools to deal
• 48:59
Speaker 2: with it. Think straight, and then figure out the other
• 49:02
Speaker 2: things that you need to support yourself. If that's finding
• 49:06
  Speaker 2: a guru, if it's finding a practitioner, if it's listening.
• 49:11
Speaker 2: I mean, here's the thing about purpose. It's so easy
• 49:15
Speaker 2: to blow it off because it's a whisper, and that
• 49:18
Speaker 2: whisper is often taken over by a megaphone of all
• 49:23
Speaker 2: the other crap the world tells us we should do.
• 49:27
Speaker 2: You know that, right, your freaking story is right down
• 49:31
  Speaker 2: the center of that. You're this, You're a lawyer. You're
• 49:35
Speaker 2: studying this like saying, oh, like, who is that?
• 49:40
  Speaker 1: Right?
• 49:41
Speaker 2: So I get that and I listened. I listened to
• 49:47
Speaker 2: my father say this. When I was nine years old,
• 49:51
Speaker 2: I could barely see over the dashboard of the car,
• 49:55
Speaker 2: and I asked, my dad, don't know ask me how
• 49:57
Speaker 2: I did? I said, what do you want in your life? Life?
• 50:01
Speaker 2: And my dad said, I want to sail because I
• 50:04
Speaker 2: was in the Navy and I always want to have
• 50:05
Speaker 2: a boat. I want to be in the sunshine, and
• 50:08
Speaker 2: here we are in Minnesota. I want a motorcycle again,
• 50:12
Speaker 2: and feel the window on my face. And so he
• 50:14
Speaker 2: had a few other things. I heard that, and then
• 50:18
Speaker 2: I spent the next thirty years with that man and
• 50:25
Speaker 2: him not fulfilling that stuff. Do you think that his
• 50:28
Speaker 2: addiction and his sadness and his pain, his anger of
• 50:34
Speaker 2: a all this things that that came from from his childhood,
• 50:37
Speaker 2: but also not fulfilling his purpose that he revealed to me,
• 50:43
Speaker 2: and the gift that he gave me was I heard it,
• 50:48
Speaker 2: but I am going to actually do it. And somewhere
• 50:51
Speaker 2: in the I heard that and I felt that, right.
• 50:54
Speaker 1: Well, a couple things. First of all, highly abnormal for
• 50:57
Speaker 1: a nine year old kid to ask his dad this
• 51:00
Speaker 1: profound question about his life. So there's something about you
• 51:04
Speaker 1: that is unique in that regard and the fact that
• 51:07
Speaker 1: you remember it, like it was such a memorable event
• 51:11
Speaker 1: in your life that created like a compass and a
• 51:14
Speaker 1: sense of direction. And then second to that is the
• 51:17
Speaker 1: simplicity of his responses to that question, Like I like
• 51:22
Speaker 1: being on the water.
• 51:23
Speaker 2: I like the sun.
• 51:24
  Speaker 1: It's like it's not like, oh, I need a mansion
• 51:26
Speaker 1: and a jet or like, it's like very basic things
• 51:29
Speaker 1: that really I mean, the boat, you know, we can
• 51:33
Speaker 1: talk about that, but beyond that, like what he really
• 51:35
Speaker 1: wants is like that sense of freedom and what he
• 51:38
Speaker 1: feels like on the water, right, And those are not
• 51:40
Speaker 1: necessarily tied to socioeconomic status. They're achievable goals, you know
• 51:46
Speaker 1: what I mean. And the fact that for whatever reason
• 51:49
Speaker 1: he became a prisoner of his conditions and was never
• 51:52
Speaker 1: able to you know, access those very basic you know,
• 51:57
  Speaker 1: human needs. I mean, that's what I like. It's one
• 52:00
Speaker 1: of the reasons I moved. I like the sun, I
• 52:02
Speaker 1: like the water, like the mountains here we are, yeah,
• 52:05
Speaker 1: you know, and it's there's there's tragedy in that. In
• 52:09
Speaker 1: some regards, it's sad.
• 52:11
Speaker 2: You know. The cool thing about our relationship my dad
• 52:14
Speaker 2: was you know, angry, drunk, you know, sober. The scar
• 52:21
Speaker 2: on my chin that maybe the audience can see was
• 52:24
Speaker 2: when my dad got sober for the first time after
• 52:29
Speaker 2: he accidentally catapulted me in the garage from slamming the door.
• 52:35
Speaker 2: He didn't know I was there in a drunk, drunken stupor,
• 52:40
Speaker 2: and it catapulted me into the sea of beer bottles
• 52:44
Speaker 2: on a concrete floor and like a bowling ball, I
• 52:49
Speaker 2: slammed into them, broke them open. My chin nearly got
• 52:53
Speaker 2: cut off, and this was you know four Yeah.
• 52:57
Speaker 1: So the symbolic nature of of you crashing into beer
• 53:01
Speaker 1: bottles too, like empty ones are full ones.
• 53:06
Speaker 2: They must have been empty, yeah, right.
• 53:08
Speaker 1: Gotta gotta save those, gotta collect those. Yeah, a trophy
• 53:11
Speaker 1: to the to the extent to which he imbibed.
• 53:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, and then that that's when he got sober for
• 53:17
Speaker 2: the first time. Scared him. But uh, you know, he
• 53:20
Speaker 2: got scared again and his demons came back. But the
• 53:24
Speaker 2: cool thing about our relationship was there was nothing that
• 53:28
Speaker 2: was on the left on the table the as we
• 53:32
Speaker 2: were adults, and we bonded incredibly, like he did get
• 53:36
Speaker 2: a motorcycle at one point and ultimately got rid of
• 53:39
Speaker 2: it for some other weird ass reasons that ultimately he
• 53:45
Speaker 2: kind of didn't feel he deserved it and all this stuff.
• 53:49
Speaker 2: But before he died, there was nothing that I wasn't
• 53:54
Speaker 2: honest with him about nothing. He wasn't honest that I
• 53:57
Speaker 2: know of that he wasn't honest with me. And so
• 53:59
Speaker 2: you guys good, We were good.
• 54:01
Speaker 1: And what do you think triggered the relapse after that
• 54:05
Speaker 1: many years in sobriety.
• 54:07
Speaker 2: Well, I think it was it was an un dealt
• 54:13
Speaker 2: with pain. So keep in mind in nineteen forty one
• 54:20
Speaker 2: or two when he was born, he was the youngest
• 54:25
Speaker 2: of three and his oldest brother, who was twenty years old,
• 54:34
Speaker 2: he was one, he was twenty, and he got killed
• 54:38
Speaker 2: in World War Two, So their golden child. I think
• 54:45
Speaker 2: he was like, he was dating an actress, he was
• 54:49
Speaker 2: doing really well, he was charismatic, he was all this stuff.
• 54:53
Speaker 2: And then the grief of that was the petri dish
• 54:58
Speaker 2: of how my dad grew up. So there was this
• 55:01
Speaker 2: and then he you know, he he grew up with
• 55:04
Speaker 2: two engineer brothers, very linear. One worked at Boulder at
• 55:08
Speaker 2: the Atmospheric Research Center and the other one worked was
• 55:12
Speaker 2: Ahead one Ahead engineers for the Alaska Pipeline. These guys
• 55:16
Speaker 2: were smart, like I felt stupid around them, like like
• 55:20
Speaker 2: like they can go read off photographic memories and like
• 55:25
Speaker 2: all this stuff. And my dad's got two parts, very
• 55:29
Speaker 2: smart but also very empathic. Right, so he's just like,
• 55:33
Speaker 2: who am I, I'll be a professor. So he was
• 55:36
  Speaker 2: a professor for a while. He's like, wait a minute,
• 55:38
Speaker 2: I want to connect with people, so he became a
• 55:40
Speaker 2: counselor wait a minute, I don't want to live in Minnesota.
• 55:43
Speaker 2: And so he was just kind of a you know,
• 55:46
Speaker 2: a tennis match inside of himself, and ultimately, you know
• 55:50
Speaker 2: it just he wasn't fulfilled, right and he felt trapped.
• 55:54
Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, and that's heavy for you, you know, to
• 55:58
Speaker 1: carry that around, but to be able to process that
• 56:01
Speaker 1: and use it as you know, an example of mistakes
• 56:07
Speaker 1: you don't want to make in your own life. And
• 56:08
Speaker 1: the kind of like I said earlier, Gauge that you know.
• 56:14
Speaker 2: Compass to forge your path under your son.
• 56:18
Speaker 1: So, uh, let's get back to the Baruka stuff Buruna.
• 56:22
Speaker 1: So you've got like so you make this decision like
• 56:25
Speaker 1: I'm going to make a business out of this, Like
• 56:26
Speaker 1: I'm going to empower these people, and I'm going to
• 56:28
Speaker 1: bring this thing that no one, you know, in America
• 56:31
Speaker 1: or North America, the western developed world has ever even
• 56:34
Speaker 1: really heard of. I mean from a marketing perspective.
• 56:38
  Speaker 2: That's a challenge.
• 56:40
  Speaker 1: And I can't imagine the infrastructure. I know you've been
• 56:42
Speaker 1: laying like the infrastructure for the past couple of years
• 56:45
Speaker 1: down there, so like you've got like boots on the
• 56:47
Speaker 1: ground and trucks and like processing you figured out how
• 56:50
Speaker 1: to like crack these things open, right, you have to
• 56:53
Speaker 1: like make your own machine to do that. Like how
• 56:56
Speaker 1: is it like some kind of what is it like
• 56:59
  Speaker 1: a press?
• 57:00
  Speaker 2: There's several there's several different cracking mechanisms. There's a hydraulic
• 57:05
Speaker 2: one that's just mimicking a blade coming down and cracking it,
• 57:10
Speaker 2: like cracking it right here and just breaking in and
• 57:13
Speaker 2: you can increase that speed, but indigenously, like I said,
• 57:17
Speaker 2: way back then, they were thrown on the fire, but
• 57:19
Speaker 2: as of recently, they'll just take a machete and try
• 57:22
Speaker 2: to break that open. You imagine how repetitive and inefficient.
• 57:27
Speaker 2: That is not to mention ex scale. Yeah, and it's
• 57:31
Speaker 2: exposing it to all kinds of you know, pathogens and stuff.
• 57:34
Speaker 2: So we have employed engineers around the world who are
• 57:40
Speaker 2: constantly still we want to get it up to a
• 57:44
Speaker 2: very high efficiency, but we've collapsed it down into being
• 57:48
Speaker 2: pretty efficient. But we're also now with the fruit. Right,
• 57:53
Speaker 2: So I had this idea when we're out there. So
• 57:56
Speaker 2: this fruit layer right.
• 57:58
Speaker 1: Right, the actual seat the seed that encases the nut.
• 58:03
Speaker 2: Yeah, So it's the Yeah, so it's this fruit which
• 58:05
Speaker 2: is a droup. So the fruit layer is actually if
• 58:09
Speaker 2: you you can actually taste on so that little he's.
• 58:12
Speaker 1: Got like a mason jar. This is so it's like
• 58:14
  Speaker 1: a trail mix.
• 58:15
Speaker 2: So this is the ultimate alchemy of trail mix.
• 58:18
Speaker 1: So I've had the brew nut, but I haven't had
• 58:20
  Speaker 1: the fruit, so.
• 58:22
Speaker 2: Have it with it. How amazing is that? So when
• 58:27
Speaker 2: I was out there, I saw.
• 58:30
Speaker 1: That's crazy that the the the fruit almost tastes like
• 58:34
  Speaker 1: gram crackers.
• 58:35
Speaker 2: It's crazy, isn't it. It's super high fiber again with
• 58:44
Speaker 2: tons of antioxidants and very low sugar. So so when
• 58:52
Speaker 2: I saw this, and and when I saw this in
• 58:55
Speaker 2: the in we saw a five year old breof and
• 59:00
Speaker 2: I looked at it as if it was a day old,
• 59:03
Speaker 2: and I was like, how is it that that fruit
• 59:07
Speaker 2: does not break down at all? And I, you know,
• 59:10
Speaker 2: I ate it, and I was like, it tastes like
• 59:13
Speaker 2: a fresh one. How is that possible? What's going on
• 59:16
Speaker 2: in the preservation and the resiliency of that fruit? So
• 59:21
Speaker 2: in the car in the nine hour drive through the Sahata,
• 59:25
Speaker 2: at one point, I grabbed a bunch of these, took
• 59:27
Speaker 2: a pocket knife, and I started peeling all these and
• 59:30
Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm bringing this back to the States. I'm
• 59:32
Speaker 2: gonna test this stuff. And that's when the micronutrients and
• 59:35
Speaker 2: the antioxidants and the fiber I was like. And then
• 59:38
Speaker 2: I got back and I did some dehydration and all
• 59:41
Speaker 2: this stuff, and we're like, holy cow, a perfect synergy
• 59:46
Speaker 2: of a Trai miix.
• 59:47
Speaker 1: What is the nutritional profile of the fruit?
• 59:50
Speaker 2: Yeah? So it's like, like I said, a ton of
• 59:53
Speaker 2: the antioxidants, a lot more fiber, Vitamin E which is great, calcium, magnesium,
• 1:00:02
Speaker 2: vitamin C, like credible, and then this is just discarded.
• 1:00:07
Speaker 2: So again you're looking at a sustainable structure. Here is
• 1:00:11
Speaker 2: like why would we throw that away when it's got
• 1:00:14
Speaker 2: such a high and nutrient value. And so that's you know,
• 1:00:18
Speaker 2: when we're going to launch the kickstarter, we're launching it
• 1:00:21
Speaker 2: with the idea of introducing the fruit, the ultimate the
• 1:00:26
Speaker 2: super trail mix right together. Because there's I'm always I'm
• 1:00:32
Speaker 2: always blown away at alchemy, alchemy in nature when you
• 1:00:38
Speaker 2: see it with medicinal plants and you see the synergy.
• 1:00:42
Speaker 2: Another great example of that is coffee fruit, coffee bean
• 1:00:46
Speaker 2: and the fruit, and if you do that, if you
• 1:00:49
Speaker 2: dry those correctly together, the benefit of the bean with
• 1:00:55
Speaker 2: the fruit is exponentially greater than any one on their own.
• 1:01:00
Speaker 2: So for example, the antioxidant level is through the room
• 1:01:05
Speaker 2: like the fruits discard. That's another thing, like it's the
• 1:01:08
  Speaker 2: cast why are.
• 1:01:09
Speaker 1: We doing that? How come we're not eating the coffee.
• 1:01:11
Speaker 2: Because it's the cause, it's the call. And as soon
• 1:01:14
Speaker 2: as it's harvested, it goes, it ferments right away.
• 1:01:18
Speaker 1: Right, So that's the difference between this because this doesn't stay.
• 1:01:21
Speaker 2: It stays. There's a preservation. And when you start looking
• 1:01:25
Speaker 2: at nature, nature will tell you like adaptogens too, like
• 1:01:29
Speaker 2: adaptagens being in severe environmental stressors. The beautiful alchemy of
• 1:01:36
Speaker 2: that is. Wow, if we consume them, it helps us
• 1:01:40
Speaker 2: deal with stress. How crazy is that? Right? From from
• 1:01:46
Speaker 2: uh Chaga to cordyce EPs to Oshuaganda to a stragglus
• 1:01:51
Speaker 2: to Rodeola to Shazandra, all of these different types of adaptagens.
• 1:01:56
Speaker 2: So when I look, I'm looking through the lens of
• 1:01:59
Speaker 2: the experience, and so I'm like, going, there's an alchemy here.
• 1:02:04
Speaker 2: There's not only your you just experienced the taste alchemy, right,
• 1:02:09
Speaker 2: but now there's a nutritional superiority of consuming both together
• 1:02:12
Speaker 2: and you're getting that much more of a complete again,
• 1:02:16
Speaker 2: fulfilling my deepest desire of Now I just got rich
• 1:02:19
Speaker 2: more nutrients than he had before.
• 1:02:22
Speaker 1: Very direct, one on one way for sure. Yeah.
• 1:02:25
  Speaker 2: Sure.
• 1:02:26
Speaker 1: The mental health piece is so important, you know. I mean,
• 1:02:29
Speaker 1: here we are, we're in the we're in the wake
• 1:02:31
Speaker 1: of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, you know, both making
• 1:02:36
Speaker 1: the choice to and their lives. And I think it's
• 1:02:40
Speaker 1: it's kind of created uh an interest in having a
• 1:02:46
Speaker 1: conversation that we really need to have about the importance
• 1:02:49
Speaker 1: of mental health. And you know, I set this on
• 1:02:52
Speaker 1: social media recently, like mental health isn't everything, but it's
• 1:02:56
Speaker 1: pretty fucking close, right, And and my experience, you know,
• 1:03:02
Speaker 1: I experienced this at our retreat recently. You get a
• 1:03:04
Speaker 1: bunch of people together who are seemingly very high functioning
• 1:03:09
Speaker 1: or are very high functioning, and it looks like life
• 1:03:12
Speaker 1: is good, and you create a safe container where they
• 1:03:16
Speaker 1: feel like they can be vulnerable and all you have
• 1:03:20
Speaker 1: to do is poke them. And then you realize, like,
• 1:03:23
Speaker 1: we're all struggling in various ways and we're not really
• 1:03:27
Speaker 1: dealing with these issues to the extent that they demand.
• 1:03:33
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 1:03:34
Speaker 1: So, what in your experience is the relationship between some
• 1:03:38
Speaker 1: of these foods and these other practices that you're adept
• 1:03:42
Speaker 1: at and have been exploring on the mental health equation.
• 1:03:47
Speaker 2: It's a great question, Rich and something that you know,
• 1:03:51
Speaker 2: again with my dad being unstable, is intimate in my life.
• 1:03:56
Speaker 2: And I you know, here's the thing. I think that
• 1:04:04
Speaker 2: my dream would be to have people have better knowledge of,
• 1:04:11
Speaker 2: access to and the ability to take care of the
• 1:04:15
Speaker 2: foundational bases, and that is sleep well, get out in
• 1:04:23
Speaker 2: the sun, drink good water, eat a bunch of plants,
• 1:04:30
Speaker 2: move your body, eliminate modern day stressors, toxic loads, EMFs.
• 1:04:38
Speaker 2: Stuff that's real, It's not hokey. Pokey. It's real stuff
• 1:04:42
Speaker 2: affecting us in the worse condition. Take medication from a
• 1:04:49
Speaker 2: qualified I would say, functional medicine doctor who understands nutritionally
• 1:04:54
Speaker 2: and biochemically, and and then put yourself into positive, stressful
• 1:05:04
Speaker 2: situations that evoke the body turning on kind of its
• 1:05:12
Speaker 2: natural instinct of accomplishment, of overcoming. So I think in
• 1:05:23
Speaker 2: all of those situations, if you do not have a
• 1:05:28
Speaker 2: foundation of those things, it's like trying to push a
• 1:05:34
Speaker 2: boulder uphill if I'm running around. It's very clear on
• 1:05:37
Speaker 2: the evidence and water alone. If kids don't drink water
• 1:05:41
Speaker 2: and they go to school, their test results are in
• 1:05:47
Speaker 2: the toilet. I forget the exact step, but it's like
• 1:05:50
Speaker 2: a thirty person actually studied that.
• 1:05:52
Speaker 1: Yeah, impact of water on yeah, scholastic performance, oh.
• 1:05:56
Speaker 2: Huge, And I have some of my book. I forget
• 1:05:59
Speaker 2: the exact but it was like a few hours, like
• 1:06:02
Speaker 2: a glass of water increase their performance by twenty or
• 1:06:06
Speaker 2: thirty percent. Really, Yeah, dehydration bro is like so destructive
• 1:06:14
Speaker 2: that in the reptilian brain won't even allow you to
• 1:06:17
Speaker 2: think of the thirst. Because you have seven to ten
• 1:06:20
Speaker 2: percent of Americans not even drinking an ounce of water
• 1:06:23
Speaker 2: a day. Or just going to their coffee and existing
• 1:06:27
Speaker 2: and living on adrenaline. That is their up and go
• 1:06:32
Speaker 2: molecule in their body that was only meant to get
• 1:06:35
Speaker 2: away from a lion, but they're living on it. Twenty
• 1:06:37
Speaker 2: four to seven. You are frying your hormonal system, You're
• 1:06:44
Speaker 2: frying your central nervous system i e. Brain, and we
• 1:06:49
Speaker 2: expect to then respond to this modern day overachieving situation
• 1:06:56
Speaker 2: when you're basic and also the other thing I said
• 1:07:00
Speaker 2: is proper breathing. Right, what I didn't say is your
• 1:07:04
Speaker 2: basic needs. You're going against your basic physiological need. So
• 1:07:13
Speaker 2: when at the root of autism, they've found dehydration, lack
• 1:07:19
Speaker 2: of nutrition, these kinds of situations. So I always look
• 1:07:25
Speaker 2: at which is why I didn't write a superfood book.
• 1:07:28
Speaker 2: I wrote a super life book about foundational stuff because
• 1:07:34
Speaker 2: I told the publisher I don't want to write it
• 1:07:36
Speaker 2: on superfoods, because I don't want to be put in
• 1:07:38
Speaker 2: a thing like this is going to cure you or
• 1:07:41
Speaker 2: take you away. No, I want you to understand that
• 1:07:44
Speaker 2: there's foundational things that you can do that ninety nine
• 1:07:47
Speaker 2: percent of the people on the planet are going to
• 1:07:50
Speaker 2: thrive in if you take care of that. So all
• 1:07:54
Speaker 2: of these other things and even medications are like showing
• 1:07:58
Speaker 2: up to a forest fire with a little scort gun.
• 1:08:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, if you're you could be you know, look, here's
• 1:08:04
Speaker 1: this beautiful maringa. Like you could be eating this and
• 1:08:07
Speaker 1: brew nuts all day and like you know, the maka
• 1:08:10
Speaker 1: and whatever. But if you're you know, an asshole, and
• 1:08:13
Speaker 1: you're not sleeping well, and you hate your boss and
• 1:08:16
Speaker 1: and you know you're you're just not being mindful about
• 1:08:20
Speaker 1: these other or intentional about these other areas of your life,
• 1:08:23
Speaker 1: like you're not going to be healthy. You have to
• 1:08:25
Speaker 1: understand and appreciate the delicate balance of all of these
• 1:08:29
Speaker 1: systems and addressing them holistically. And I think it starts
• 1:08:32
Speaker 1: with this realization that most of us, the vast majority
• 1:08:38
Speaker 1: of us, are living our lives reactively when we have
• 1:08:41
Speaker 1: a choice to live intentionally. And don't misunderstand that doesn't
• 1:08:46
Speaker 1: mean you up and quit your job the next day.
• 1:08:49
Speaker 1: But you know, how do you approach your sleep every night?
• 1:08:53
Speaker 1: Are you just you know, dozing off to television shows
• 1:08:56
Speaker 1: at two in the morning and waking up at five
• 1:08:58
Speaker 1: or six because you know, you weren't conscious about how
• 1:09:01
Speaker 1: you're managing your time or what's the first thing that
• 1:09:04
Speaker 1: you're grabbing in the morning, Like, are you reacting and
• 1:09:07
Speaker 1: just in a pattern or a habit that you've always practiced,
• 1:09:12
Speaker 1: or are you making conscious decisions about how to improve
• 1:09:16
Speaker 1: those little things that don't cost money but require some
• 1:09:20
  Speaker 1: conscious energy.
• 1:09:21
Speaker 2: Totally? Yeah, I think. I think. One thing I became
• 1:09:26
Speaker 2: aware of is if you don't intend your life, if
• 1:09:30
Speaker 2: you don't set in motion what it is that you want,
• 1:09:35
Speaker 2: guess what that choice is going to be made for you.
• 1:09:38
Speaker 1: Yeah, I know what that's like.
• 1:09:40
Speaker 2: Yeah, you'll be reacting to your life. And so many
• 1:09:43
Speaker 2: people are like I just got through the day. Oh man, Like, oh,
• 1:09:50
Speaker 2: but you're doing nothing to grow the part of you
• 1:09:58
Speaker 2: that wants to cultivate the life that will give you joy.
• 1:10:02
Speaker 2: It's not easy, but if you don't give your energy
• 1:10:05
Speaker 2: to it, then that wolf inside of you goes hungry.
• 1:10:12
Speaker 2: And then the other wolf who is just reacting all
• 1:10:16
Speaker 2: the time, it's hungry. So now you're just addicted to
• 1:10:19
Speaker 2: that weird ass life getting by. Next thing, you know,
• 1:10:22
Speaker 2: you blink a year, five years, ten years, and you're like,
• 1:10:25
Speaker 2: what am I doing? What is the life that I want?
• 1:10:29
  Speaker 2: I mean, I spend every morning I have to it's
• 1:10:35
Speaker 2: almost like I'm dysfunctioned.
• 1:10:37
Speaker 1: Now, let's walk through the daily routine of Darren, because
• 1:10:41
Speaker 1: it's something to behold. Like, what do you get up
• 1:10:44
Speaker 1: at like three p thirty every day?
• 1:10:45
Speaker 2: I did today, did you? Yeah, it's usually it's usually four.
• 1:10:49
Speaker 2: What time you go to bed? Eight? Eight? Yeah, it's
• 1:10:52
Speaker 2: usually pretty much a this is the melotone and drip
• 1:10:55
Speaker 2: in my brain I can feel and like. But so yeah,
• 1:11:00
Speaker 2: you know, sleep again, it's a foundational thing. You mess
• 1:11:02
Speaker 2: with that, there's no amount of superfood that's going to
• 1:11:05
Speaker 2: get you over the the recovery and the rest and
• 1:11:10
Speaker 2: the what your body needs to restore yourself. So so
• 1:11:17
Speaker 2: that is for sure, without a doubt. I don't compromise
• 1:11:21
Speaker 2: on that. It takes me a lot to break the
• 1:11:23
  Speaker 2: eight o'clock world.
• 1:11:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, no, social dinners, No.
• 1:11:27
Speaker 2: I mean, listen, of course I will, but I also like,
• 1:11:31
Speaker 2: I will hedge my bet. Okay, let's go earlier. But
• 1:11:36
Speaker 2: so you know that, and then I wake up and
• 1:11:41
Speaker 2: go for the water. You know, I got my apparatus
• 1:11:44
Speaker 2: is making my water. We won't get into that right now.
• 1:11:47
Speaker 1: But yeah, we talked about that at length on the
• 1:11:49
Speaker 1: last one, right and we were talking before the podcast
• 1:11:53
Speaker 1: with Julie, because we got to sort out our water situation.
• 1:11:55
Speaker 2: Here at the house, get a whole house system, to
• 1:12:00
Speaker 2: get a house system, and then get our water with
• 1:12:02
Speaker 2: some hydrogen action. So that and then I make some
• 1:12:07
Speaker 2: sort of super elixir with several medicinal plants, tons of adaptogens.
• 1:12:13
Speaker 2: And that's kind of my the start of the ritual, right.
• 1:12:17
Speaker 2: So then I'll go in and my dog Chaga, kind
• 1:12:21
Speaker 2: of gives an indication of where you're it's at where
• 1:12:24
Speaker 2: my head, my favorite super hood is. So Chaga comes in,
• 1:12:27
Speaker 2: he lays down, get a second sleep. I come in
• 1:12:30
  Speaker 2: and I then I do a meditation. I use some
• 1:12:35
Speaker 2: sometimes I use some brain devices, some helping the right
• 1:12:39
Speaker 2: and left brain communicate through some some light and some
• 1:12:47
Speaker 2: frequency technology. And then so I'll meditate for about thirty
• 1:12:51
Speaker 2: minutes and then I'll just move right into kind of
• 1:12:55
Speaker 2: a stream of consciousness writing that that is just really
• 1:12:58
Speaker 2: centered in the metation. And then I will you know,
• 1:13:03
Speaker 2: sometimes that is working out a problem. If I have
• 1:13:06
Speaker 2: one or something is on my mind and the other
• 1:13:10
Speaker 2: it will always end in where it I'm going and
• 1:13:13
Speaker 2: what I'm doing. And I may have said the same
• 1:13:15
Speaker 2: thing a thousand times this project, that project, Like I
• 1:13:19
Speaker 2: am always starting my day with that in my consciousness.
• 1:13:25
  Speaker 2: I believe it.
• 1:13:25
Speaker 1: Will you journal until you arrive at that level of
• 1:13:29
Speaker 1: clarity or do you stop at a certain page limit
• 1:13:32
  Speaker 1: or time?
• 1:13:33
Speaker 2: No, I mean it's it could be five minutes, it
• 1:13:36
Speaker 2: could be another thirty. You know, it's usually in that zone.
• 1:13:39
Speaker 2: But I'll get there pretty quick. I mean, I've honed
• 1:13:42
Speaker 2: my this is what this is about, and my tuning
• 1:13:46
Speaker 2: fork of ultimately where I'm going is pretty sharp now.
• 1:13:53
Speaker 2: But it feels good. It feels good to tune into
• 1:13:58
Speaker 2: that which I want to create. Eight. So I always
• 1:14:03
Speaker 2: love you know, I start with gratitude. I still a
• 1:14:05
Speaker 2: lot of things I'm grateful for, and I kind of
• 1:14:08
Speaker 2: warm up in the writing with all that because I
• 1:14:11
Speaker 2: don't want to come out of I need to do
• 1:14:13
Speaker 2: that and therefore all arrive and like all that stuff,
• 1:14:16
Speaker 2: I want to do it because I'm excited to put
• 1:14:18
Speaker 2: it in the world and generate.
• 1:14:20
Speaker 1: Right, It's more about like what is the headspace I
• 1:14:23
Speaker 1: want to be in and what is the energy I
• 1:14:25
Speaker 1: want to cultivate that will propel me in that direction.
• 1:14:28
Speaker 1: So it's not about a specific goal necessarily, but kind
• 1:14:31
Speaker 1: of a wavelength where you want to live.
• 1:14:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, and then very concretely, because I have some very
• 1:14:37
Speaker 2: concrete new projects that I've been cultivating for years now
• 1:14:40
Speaker 2: that are very concrete like this guy, and I'll employ
• 1:14:47
Speaker 2: the universe. Man, I have no qualms about universe. Get
• 1:14:52
Speaker 2: that agreement signed, and anything that doesn't allow that to sign,
• 1:14:56
Speaker 2: just destroy that. Like I will be that. I will
• 1:15:00
Speaker 2: employ the universe as my assistant to just go and
• 1:15:05
Speaker 2: listen for the highest good. Right, So.
• 1:15:09
Speaker 1: You put a little of that energy to work to
• 1:15:12
Speaker 1: land this incredible abode, you know, this branch where you
• 1:15:16
Speaker 1: now live on and hidden in the woods of the
• 1:15:18
  Speaker 1: Malibu Mountains.
• 1:15:19
Speaker 2: Totally hidden around the mountain lions, bobcats, hawks, owls.
• 1:15:25
Speaker 1: Is that bobcats still coming by?
• 1:15:27
Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, man, really in your yard?
• 1:15:30
  Speaker 4: No?
• 1:15:30
Speaker 2: Oh the bobcat? Yeah, the bobcat hasn't for the last
• 1:15:33
Speaker 2: six months. But the mountain lion showed up a couple
• 1:15:36
Speaker 2: of weeks ago, big, big male mountain lion.
• 1:15:39
Speaker 1: What does chaga do?
• 1:15:42
Speaker 2: He didn't see that one. He saw the female mountain lion.
• 1:15:46
Speaker 2: I've got an active place, and he wanted to go
• 1:15:49
Speaker 2: after her, and I pulled him off. But that was
• 1:15:52
Speaker 2: good it's good for him to not be afraid, but
• 1:15:57
Speaker 2: not good for him if he's actually gonna fight.
• 1:15:59
Speaker 1: Yeah time and well for him, no.
• 1:16:01
Speaker 2: But it's humbling because I live in the forest and
• 1:16:07
Speaker 2: I live in nature, and I am not about to
• 1:16:09
Speaker 2: change that. I'm not about to make a footprint to
• 1:16:12
Speaker 2: scare these things away. I am a part of them
• 1:16:14
Speaker 2: and they're a part of me, and we live here together.
• 1:16:17
Speaker 2: I'm just walking around with a ninety pound German Shepherd
• 1:16:21
Speaker 2: and a machete in case.
• 1:16:22
Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I want to follow this thread through of
• 1:16:27
Speaker 4: your morning routine and your day routine, but I want
• 1:16:29
Speaker 4: to pause and reflect a little bit on this idea
• 1:16:32
Speaker 4: of living intentionally and with like a focused purpose, to
• 1:16:37
Speaker 4: make the point that it's not like a one time thing,
• 1:16:41
Speaker 4: like this is a this is an evolving journey, right,
• 1:16:44
Speaker 4: And you've recently gone through kind of a renaissance.
• 1:16:47
Speaker 1: In your own perspective about how you're directing your career,
• 1:16:51
Speaker 1: Like you're a very enthusiastic guy, Like you get super
• 1:16:55
Speaker 1: excited about these projects, and you have this kind of
• 1:16:58
Speaker 1: moment of reckoning not too long go where you realize,
• 1:17:01
Speaker 1: like that enthusiasm left, you've spread too thin and committed
• 1:17:05
Speaker 1: to too many different projects and you had to kind
• 1:17:07
Speaker 1: of like pause and go, what am I doing? And
• 1:17:11
Speaker 1: you ended up kind of cleaning house in order to
• 1:17:14
Speaker 1: get focused on the things that are most important. And
• 1:17:17
Speaker 1: this is somebody who I mean, how long have you
• 1:17:19
Speaker 1: been practicing the meditation and the journaling? Right, So it's
• 1:17:22
Speaker 1: not like, oh, I'm clear, like this is always changing
• 1:17:26
Speaker 1: and evolving and there's you know, there are still blind spots.
• 1:17:30
Speaker 2: Yeah, right, every step you take in the world opens
• 1:17:34
Speaker 2: up a different door. So it's not like I can
• 1:17:37
Speaker 2: journal about the same thing because a different door open
• 1:17:39
Speaker 2: maybe that week, that month. And I didn't know. I
• 1:17:42
Speaker 2: didn't see that the universe has got this more than me,
• 1:17:45
Speaker 2: And so yeah, I it is humbling rich. You know,
• 1:17:49
Speaker 2: like there's a zillion things I want to put in
• 1:17:51
Speaker 2: the world, and I get super excited about it and
• 1:17:54
Speaker 2: I have every intention that I'm going to do it.
• 1:17:57
Speaker 2: And when I kind of sat with this reality that
• 1:18:01
Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, I'm not moving this forward. I'm actually
• 1:18:05
Speaker 2: suffering and bleeding a little bit financially and my time
• 1:18:11
Speaker 2: and emotionally. And I had to get rid of an
• 1:18:14
Speaker 2: incredible team. I had some incredible women that were championing
• 1:18:20
Speaker 2: my you know what I was doing. And it was
• 1:18:23
Speaker 2: the hardest, It was the heart one of the hardest
• 1:18:27
Speaker 2: things to kind of go, I have to do this.
• 1:18:30
Speaker 2: I have to take a time out, and I that
• 1:18:33
Speaker 2: that reassessment to then refocus on the things that ultimately mattered.
• 1:18:39
Speaker 2: I was losing a little bit, going oh I should
• 1:18:42
Speaker 2: do this, Oh I should do well because other people
• 1:18:45
Speaker 2: are doing that, and I'm like that that was hurting me,
• 1:18:50
Speaker 2: and that was humbling. So I had to Yeah, I
• 1:18:53
Speaker 2: had to switch and and and you know, taking a
• 1:18:58
Speaker 2: break from the instagrams and all of that stuff and
• 1:19:01
Speaker 2: just going you know what, I am really clear. My
• 1:19:05
Speaker 2: big cultivation here is so all this little stuff that
• 1:19:10
Speaker 2: will come come what may right now, and I'm putting
• 1:19:17
Speaker 2: some energy into massive projects right now, and I'm so
• 1:19:20
Speaker 2: fired up, but also now grounded because it's a lot
• 1:19:24
Speaker 2: of work to put something in motion and to put
• 1:19:27
Speaker 2: teams together and to you know, ultimately, some of these
• 1:19:31
Speaker 2: things are going to ruffle some feathers when they get
• 1:19:34
Speaker 2: out there in a really good way. But I'm really excited.
• 1:19:40
Speaker 1: Yeah. So, how many people do you have involved in
• 1:19:43
Speaker 1: the in the Burun project, Barucas?
• 1:19:45
Speaker 2: Yeah, so Barucas. It's I have a really really good
• 1:19:49
  Speaker 2: badass kind of I mean, he won't say he's he's
• 1:19:54
Speaker 2: the COO, but he is. And so Seth is just incredible,
• 1:20:00
Speaker 2: and that he's traveled with me in a lot of countries,
• 1:20:03
Speaker 2: so he understands so much of what's going on, and
• 1:20:07
Speaker 2: he's in a place in his career where he doesn't
• 1:20:09
Speaker 2: need money. He just wants to do it right. It's awesome.
• 1:20:13
Speaker 2: And then yah, I met him.
• 1:20:14
Speaker 1: He's super cool. Like he said, he's retired like four
• 1:20:16
Speaker 1: times or something like that.
• 1:20:18
Speaker 2: And I threw this at him and he couldn't stop himself.
• 1:20:22
Speaker 2: And then Rodrigo, the Brazilian who ultimately introduced me, was
• 1:20:27
Speaker 2: and was questionings like could we do this, Like I'm Brazilian,
• 1:20:33
Speaker 2: I want to help with this thing. And then and
• 1:20:35
Speaker 2: then he's turned out.
• 1:20:36
Speaker 1: He's the guy who tried to do it on his own.
• 1:20:38
Speaker 2: Well, yeah, they they they had seen this thing and
• 1:20:42
Speaker 2: they were thinking that it was possible, but they didn't
• 1:20:46
Speaker 2: really know. I think that's why he reached out to me.
• 1:20:49
Speaker 2: He goes, well, if anyone's going to know, if anyone's
• 1:20:52
Speaker 2: gonna help, it's this guy. So and then so he's
• 1:20:59
Speaker 2: turned out to be a badass, just works hard and cares.
• 1:21:04
Speaker 2: And then and then Justin who who I've worked with,
• 1:21:07
Speaker 2: and several well Seth has worked with a few times.
• 1:21:10
Speaker 2: Everyone's just in the right spot, you know, and we're
• 1:21:14
Speaker 2: just all about, uh, doing it right. Let's plant trees,
• 1:21:20
Speaker 2: let's make this sustainable for the people, and let's get
• 1:21:23
Speaker 2: get out the greatest nut on the planet.
• 1:21:27
Speaker 1: Why are you doing a kickstarter?
• 1:21:30
Speaker 2: Well, because you know we're we're uh again, we're in
• 1:21:35
Speaker 2: this engineering thing where the nut, the nut's one thing
• 1:21:40
Speaker 2: to crack, which we're spending time, resources and money to
• 1:21:43
Speaker 2: do that. But it's also now how to shave this
• 1:21:46
Speaker 2: efficiently the fruit off of the nut? This doesn't exist,
• 1:21:53
Speaker 2: So we really want to raise the awareness and if
• 1:21:58
Speaker 2: there's any capital, let's do that. But it's ultimately the
• 1:22:03
Speaker 2: biggest personally, the biggest reason we want to raise money
• 1:22:08
Speaker 2: so we can plant trees like right now, because fifteen
• 1:22:11
Speaker 2: years giving these trees out to the indigenous people so
• 1:22:16
Speaker 2: that they replant them in the wild, we want to
• 1:22:21
Speaker 2: get millions of trees. And that is ultimately why we're
• 1:22:27
  Speaker 2: creating this kickstarter.
• 1:22:28
Speaker 1: So how much are you trying to raise through that?
• 1:22:30
  Speaker 2: I don't know what we're going to set, but we're
• 1:22:33
Speaker 2: going to get some eyeballs on this thing. And I
• 1:22:36
Speaker 2: urge everyone to like go out and tell your friends
• 1:22:40
Speaker 2: and family because this is really rubber meets the road.
• 1:22:43
Speaker 2: Voting with your dollars, by you ordering some of the
• 1:22:48
Speaker 2: trail mix, you'll get, you know, an incredible experience with
• 1:22:52
Speaker 2: great nutrition. But you're literally helping an environment and you're
• 1:22:58
Speaker 2: helping the indigenous people directly, because, like I said, if
• 1:23:01
Speaker 2: we're not in the symbiosis with the people and the planet,
• 1:23:06
Speaker 2: this project wouldn't even exist. So that's ultimately our biggest goal.
• 1:23:13
Speaker 1: Yeah, every consumer is empowered with the ability to shift
• 1:23:19
Speaker 1: and change culture by voting with your dollar, right, so
• 1:23:22
Speaker 1: you can go and buy what you've always bought, and
• 1:23:24
Speaker 1: that ultimately is supporting you know, you are voting for
• 1:23:28
Speaker 1: those companies to succeed. So who are you voting for?
• 1:23:32
Speaker 1: Are you voting for somebody who is you know, damaging
• 1:23:35
Speaker 1: the planet and poisoning children, or are you, you know,
• 1:23:39
Speaker 1: investing in the future really and investing in true sustainable
• 1:23:43
Speaker 1: agriculture that's empowering indigenous people and also at the same
• 1:23:48
Speaker 1: time nourishing your body in a profound way. So you
• 1:23:53
Speaker 1: rolled this thing out? And when did these first become available,
• 1:23:56
Speaker 1: because they've been they're at Airwan, like you can buy
• 1:24:00
Speaker 1: either at Sunlife, you know, Khalil's shop, friend of the podcast.
• 1:24:04
Speaker 1: So I'm seeing them around and what's great? I mean,
• 1:24:06
Speaker 1: first of all, I haven't even said it. They're like
• 1:24:07
Speaker 1: incredibly delicious, dude. They're like they're so tasty that they're addictive.
• 1:24:13
Speaker 1: And even like my daughter Mathis, she goes to Sunlife
• 1:24:17
Speaker 1: and she buys them. She's like, oh my god, She's like,
• 1:24:19
  Speaker 1: that's your friend Darren's company. I can't like, if I
• 1:24:22
Speaker 1: eat them, I have to eat like the whole bag,
• 1:24:24
Speaker 1: Like I can't stop eating them. They're so good. And
• 1:24:26
Speaker 1: she's finicky, you know, like she's not easy to please.
• 1:24:30
Speaker 1: So you know, for an adolescent, you know, teenager to
• 1:24:35
Speaker 1: enjoy a food that's super good for you, that's like
• 1:24:38
  Speaker 1: a that's such a win. You know.
• 1:24:40
Speaker 2: That's what we found the kids. Would you know our
• 1:24:44
Speaker 2: friend Neil Strauss, right, yeah, so he sent me a
• 1:24:48
Speaker 2: video of his son ten two years old crying on
• 1:24:53
Speaker 2: video day. Gimme bo because I want I'm like I
• 1:25:00
Speaker 2: died laughing. So the thing is again the no barrier
• 1:25:04
Speaker 2: to taste entry for Americans, plus the nutrients plus good
• 1:25:10
Speaker 2: for the environment. That's why I did it. That's why
• 1:25:14
Speaker 2: I focused on brukas to like this. This called me.
• 1:25:18
  Speaker 2: This wasn't even my this wasn't even a choice. I
• 1:25:22
Speaker 2: had to do it.
• 1:25:22
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not like like maka is an acquired taste,
• 1:25:26
Speaker 1: like maringa is very exotic. But the buru nut meets
• 1:25:31
Speaker 1: the American palette like where it's at because it does
• 1:25:35
Speaker 1: taste very It's like a better tasting version of a peanut.
• 1:25:39
Speaker 1: It's better. I think it's better. And to know that
• 1:25:42
Speaker 1: the nutritional profile like blows a peanut away and is
• 1:25:46
Speaker 1: better than an almond. Like, I love almonds, but the
• 1:25:50
Speaker 1: water input for almonds is insane, you know. So I
• 1:25:54
Speaker 1: feel like I have this weird pang of guilt every
• 1:25:57
Speaker 1: time I'm eating almonds or making my own almond milk.
• 1:26:00
Speaker 2: Yeah, well it's it's the amount of water they use
• 1:26:03
Speaker 2: for one year of cultivation of almonds. Uh is as
• 1:26:08
Speaker 2: much as all of la uses.
• 1:26:11
  Speaker 1: That's crazy, all of l A. Yeah. I mean it's
• 1:26:14
Speaker 1: not as bad as be for dairy, to be clear,
• 1:26:16
Speaker 1: but like in terms of the plant kingdom, it's the
• 1:26:19
Speaker 1: I think it might be the most water intensive plants
• 1:26:23
Speaker 1: to grow, and they grow them like crazy here in
• 1:26:26
Speaker 1: California in an area where you know, drought is a
• 1:26:28
  Speaker 1: very real.
• 1:26:28
Speaker 2: Thing, and this is this is wild, This is no,
• 1:26:33
Speaker 2: there's no outside water. That's what what what it taps
• 1:26:36
Speaker 2: into an agrapher and what rains on it like that's it.
• 1:26:39
Speaker 1: And just to be fair, you know there is a
• 1:26:42
Speaker 1: It's not without its carbon footprint though, because you've got
• 1:26:45
Speaker 1: to import these things from Brazil, so we can't they
• 1:26:48
Speaker 1: can you grow them here or they? Is it something
• 1:26:50
Speaker 1: about the sadu and.
• 1:26:52
Speaker 2: The Yeah, it's a very very particular biome. We haven't
• 1:26:57
Speaker 2: found that it would thrive and you would take you
• 1:27:01
Speaker 2: probably two to three cycles of the tree growing. Let's
• 1:27:07
Speaker 2: say it matured in fifteen years, it may die off
• 1:27:12
Speaker 2: in the next thirty so you don't really know. But
• 1:27:17
Speaker 2: I'm a firm believer that when the planet has chose
• 1:27:22
Speaker 2: a particular area to grow something, then there's a reason
• 1:27:25
Speaker 2: for it. And I like to my view is outweighing
• 1:27:31
Speaker 2: the carbon footprint, is allowing for the indigenous people to thrive,
• 1:27:38
Speaker 2: for the planet to be to the Sahada to be
• 1:27:41
Speaker 2: resurrected and for people to have better nutrients, and.
• 1:27:47
Speaker 1: It's a prophylactic against the encroaching deforestation of the cattle industry.
• 1:27:52
Speaker 2: So our calculation is that there's far far outweighs the
• 1:27:57
Speaker 2: footprint of that. And again we're very very conscious of
• 1:28:03
Speaker 2: utilizing it in the most sustainable way and that's why
• 1:28:06
Speaker 2: we've taken two and a half years to get it
• 1:28:09
Speaker 2: to where it can be talked about and shared.
• 1:28:13
Speaker 1: Now, are you, like you're selling these from the website
• 1:28:16
Speaker 1: right now? Can you get them a nationwide or where
• 1:28:19
Speaker 1: are you shipping worldwide?
• 1:28:20
Speaker 2: Like where we're starting to open up the world, but
• 1:28:24
Speaker 2: we're a little far from that, but certainly nationwide Broucus
• 1:28:28
Speaker 2: dot com or Amazon?
• 1:28:30
Speaker 1: And do you want to maintain the direct to consumer
• 1:28:32
Speaker 1: model or is the intention that you'll have this in
• 1:28:36
Speaker 1: you know, retail grocery stores And.
• 1:28:37
Speaker 2: Yeah, we're we're not opposed to that. I like the
• 1:28:40
Speaker 2: idea of people getting it directly because it just allows
• 1:28:45
Speaker 2: it allows for efficiency, economic efficiencies. But you know a
• 1:28:50
Speaker 2: few retailers want it. We're not going to say no.
• 1:28:53
Speaker 2: We have some big, big distributors, big big and I'm
• 1:28:57
Speaker 2: not going to name it now because we're under agreements
• 1:28:59
Speaker 2: and stuff, but we have some of the biggest that
• 1:29:02
Speaker 2: want them right now. And again, there might be a
• 1:29:05
Speaker 2: lot of people coming into this wanting it, but to
• 1:29:08
Speaker 2: actually have a sustainable supply is very, very, very difficult.
• 1:29:14
Speaker 1: There's no end to like what you can do too.
• 1:29:16
Speaker 1: You could make butters out of this if you tried
• 1:29:19
Speaker 1: to make a milk out of it.
• 1:29:21
Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, milk's insane. Butter is insane. Neil Strauss's wife
• 1:29:27
Speaker 2: may remember those. Do you have those peanut butter cups
• 1:29:31
Speaker 2: with brew like crazy? So we we that's got to
• 1:29:36
Speaker 2: be part of the plant, right And then we have
• 1:29:37
Speaker 2: a Himalayan salt dusted nut that is just out of
• 1:29:43
Speaker 2: your mind delicious. So yeah, we have some plans. It's exciting, man,
• 1:29:48
  Speaker 2: totally exciting. Yeah.
• 1:29:50
Speaker 1: So what do you think like the timeframe is to
• 1:29:53
Speaker 1: like get this into mainstream awareness and everybody's pantries.
• 1:29:59
Speaker 2: I'm hoping in the month man, in the next month. Wow, Yeah,
• 1:30:02
  Speaker 2: I think we were. I mean, I want I want
• 1:30:04
Speaker 2: to get attraction straight away because we're coming into harvest season.
• 1:30:08
Speaker 1: You guys are sitting on a bounty of it. Can
• 1:30:11
  Speaker 1: you fulfill demand?
• 1:30:12
Speaker 2: We can fulfill a lot of demand right now, and
• 1:30:14
Speaker 2: we want to know more of what that demand is
• 1:30:18
Speaker 2: so we can go gather like right now, like an
• 1:30:22
Speaker 2: infinite amount. So uh yeah, we're able to to you know,
• 1:30:30
Speaker 2: what we've been doing is we're sitting on a large
• 1:30:34
Speaker 2: supply for this very reason too. So that's exciting. Yeah, yeah,
• 1:30:39
Speaker 2: it's you know, it's just again I'm in this place
• 1:30:42
Speaker 2: in the career. I'm not doing it for the money
• 1:30:45
Speaker 2: per se. I'm doing it because it's the right thing
• 1:30:47
Speaker 2: to do. And again, I want there's nothing gives me
• 1:30:51
Speaker 2: greater joy than to see you eat those and to
• 1:30:54
Speaker 2: see other people eat them, because I know all of
• 1:30:57
Speaker 2: what we've discussed today is real and it's something that
• 1:31:01
Speaker 2: we've worked very hard, and you're getting something incredible for
• 1:31:05
Speaker 2: your body. And that to me, I knew the moment
• 1:31:09
Speaker 2: I started super food hunting and I started giving my
• 1:31:12
Speaker 2: formulas away to people, that just is like the biggest
• 1:31:15
Speaker 2: puts the biggest smile on my face. It's cool. Man.
• 1:31:18
Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, I want to wind this down, but you
• 1:31:21
Speaker 1: know before we kind of close the book on this
• 1:31:25
Speaker 1: on this subject, this theme of mental health, because it's
• 1:31:28
Speaker 1: it has been I mean, look, it's been weighing on
• 1:31:30
Speaker 1: me heavily, and I haven't spoken about it very directly,
• 1:31:34
Speaker 1: but you know, Anthony Bourdaine represents this kind of person
• 1:31:42
Speaker 1: that was almost magical. Like he he you know, he
• 1:31:47
Speaker 1: transcended the silos in which we now find ourselves, Like
• 1:31:52
Speaker 1: he could communicate with a Trump supporter just as well
• 1:31:57
Speaker 1: as he could communicate with an Obama supporter, Like there
• 1:32:00
Speaker 1: was no political divide when it came to his sort
• 1:32:04
Speaker 1: of fan base. And as a guy, I mean, he
• 1:32:07
Speaker 1: lived a life very similar to yours. Like he was
• 1:32:10
  Speaker 1: a he was a he was a he was a
• 1:32:12
Speaker 1: food hunter, he was he was a uh an explorer
• 1:32:17
Speaker 1: of cultures, you know, and he's he devoted his life
• 1:32:20
Speaker 1: to to visiting these indigenous cultures all over the world
• 1:32:27
Speaker 1: and and took the time to commune with them, to
• 1:32:30
Speaker 1: understand them, to literally break bread with them in an
• 1:32:34
Speaker 1: effort to like make the world a little bit smaller,
• 1:32:37
Speaker 1: you know. And what you've done is I see a
• 1:32:39
Speaker 1: lot of similarities, and I feel like we need more
• 1:32:45
Speaker 1: of that now, We need more of the you know,
• 1:32:48
Speaker 1: the these these people who can bridge the divide and
• 1:32:51
Speaker 1: help us communicate better. And you know, on a personal level,
• 1:32:55
Speaker 1: like he was the expression of like kind of like
• 1:32:59
Speaker 1: every eyes dream like he gets to travel the world
• 1:33:02
Speaker 1: and he eats this amazing food and he gets to
• 1:33:03
Speaker 1: share it and make these amazing TV shows out of it.
• 1:33:06
Speaker 1: And I think that is part and person of why
• 1:33:09
Speaker 1: it was so impactful when he made the choice to
• 1:33:13
Speaker 1: depart the planet in the way that he did. And
• 1:33:17
Speaker 1: if there is a silver lining in that beyond just
• 1:33:21
Speaker 1: celebrating his life, it's that we can have a conversation
• 1:33:25
Speaker 1: about focusing on mental health, trying to invest in our
• 1:33:31
Speaker 1: well being beyond beyond just you know, fitness or weight loss,
• 1:33:37
Speaker 1: to get really real with something that I think ails
• 1:33:40
Speaker 1: most people in our anxiety ridden, overly stressed, you know,
• 1:33:47
Speaker 1: scroll obsessed culture that is leaving us depleted and depressed
• 1:33:54
Speaker 1: and despondent in many cases, so to the extent that
• 1:33:59
Speaker 1: you can like leave us by imparting a little bit
• 1:34:02
Speaker 1: of wisdom about how some of these foods that you've
• 1:34:06
Speaker 1: explored could help benefit people's mental well being, or some
• 1:34:10
Speaker 1: lifestyle practices that people can begin to incorporate into their
• 1:34:15
Speaker 1: own lives that might begin to you know, address, you know,
• 1:34:20
Speaker 1: provide a little bit of comfort and ease. Not and
• 1:34:24
Speaker 1: this is not to say like western medicine doesn't have
• 1:34:27
Speaker 1: its place in the conversation about depression specifically, but more
• 1:34:33
Speaker 1: to the point that we have more control over these
• 1:34:37
Speaker 1: things than I think we've been led to believe.
• 1:34:39
Speaker 2: I agree hundred percent. And just to touch on that,
• 1:34:43
Speaker 2: Anthony Bourdain is We'll be missed because of that spirit
• 1:34:49
Speaker 2: that he had and for what he did, and without
• 1:34:52
Speaker 2: a doubt I was impacted for ten years.
• 1:34:55
Speaker 1: He had to be like a sort of beacon for you.
• 1:34:58
Speaker 2: Yeah, when you have people like him, and you have
• 1:35:00
Speaker 2: like Dan Buttner, and you have people that have hit
• 1:35:03
Speaker 2: the trail, you don't think that I'm like going, you
• 1:35:06
Speaker 2: have Chris kill him, right, medicine hunter, Like all these
• 1:35:10
Speaker 2: people are people that I totally respect because it's almost
• 1:35:17
Speaker 2: like a blue collar rubber reads the road, like, so
• 1:35:20
Speaker 2: you're seeing this truth in what they're finding and then
• 1:35:23
Speaker 2: they're sharing it. So he's he was doing that and
• 1:35:26
Speaker 2: I respect that. And you know someone that you know,
• 1:35:29
Speaker 2: people have been wanting to do a super food hunting
• 1:35:31
Speaker 2: show for ten years. So I've always looked at him
• 1:35:35
Speaker 2: as he was scattered of that he was the guy
• 1:35:38
Speaker 2: doing that. I think back to your you know, I
• 1:35:44
Speaker 2: alluded to it before in the foundational side of it.
• 1:35:46
Speaker 2: I think I think breathing is a very very powerful
• 1:35:52
Speaker 2: thing that you can do. And I'm not just saying
• 1:35:54
Speaker 2: like breathe, I'm saying like, nose breathing, shut your mouth,
• 1:35:59
Speaker 2: breathe through the knows. Do that multiple times a day
• 1:36:02
Speaker 2: if you do it before you eat, which would help.
• 1:36:06
Speaker 2: Once you start breathing through your nose, it turns your
• 1:36:10
Speaker 2: your stress sympathetic nervous system. It turns starts to turn
• 1:36:14
Speaker 2: that off, and it turns exactly so the pair of
• 1:36:17
Speaker 2: sympathetic and then you can get into you know, The
• 1:36:20
Speaker 2: Oxygen Advantage is a great book that talks about that.
• 1:36:24
Speaker 2: You should get that guy on the podcast.
• 1:36:26
Speaker 1: And Brian McKenzie's doing some interesting Brian, who did he
• 1:36:28
Speaker 1: partner with some guy from writing a book or he's
• 1:36:31
Speaker 1: doing some research on this.
• 1:36:32
Speaker 2: He's doing I'm not going to reveal too much, but
• 1:36:35
Speaker 2: he's doing some stuff that will be accessible. Also a
• 1:36:40
Speaker 2: big shout out to him. He just had a severe
• 1:36:42
Speaker 2: neck injury and surgery, so we just wish him well
• 1:36:48
Speaker 2: and thinking about him a lot. So, yeah, he's doing
• 1:36:52
Speaker 2: a lot obviously. Wim hoffstream, yeah, huge, and then Lard
• 1:36:58
Speaker 2: Laird Hamilton gets, I mean their friends of mine, but
• 1:37:03
Speaker 2: realizing how powerful like I've done. I've done DMT, I've
• 1:37:08
Speaker 2: done ayahuasca, I've done things like that. But when I
• 1:37:11
Speaker 2: realize that, oh, it really is the breath, it isn't
• 1:37:15
Speaker 2: the You know, there's a place for psychedelics and all
• 1:37:19
Speaker 2: that stuff in our culture. There always has been. For me.
• 1:37:21
Speaker 2: I'm like, I see that door that's opened just through
• 1:37:24
Speaker 2: breathing exercises every morning. I didn't say that in my
• 1:37:27
Speaker 2: morning thing. I do breathwork, So I do all nose breathing,
• 1:37:30
Speaker 2: and I do some inhale holds, some exhale holds and
• 1:37:35
  Speaker 2: stuff like that.
• 1:37:35
Speaker 1: And that is there a specific protocol that you adhere
• 1:37:38
Speaker 1: to that people who are listening can find somewhere online
• 1:37:42
Speaker 1: or is there a tradition like where can people learn
• 1:37:45
  Speaker 1: more about it?
• 1:37:45
Speaker 2: Well, there's certainly a lot of tradition. But again wim
• 1:37:48
Speaker 2: Hoff has some stuff XPT life dot Com with Gabby
• 1:37:51
Speaker 2: and Reese have a lot of stuff on it. I
• 1:37:54
Speaker 2: have a very simple thing that inhale for five count
• 1:38:00
Speaker 2: for five count, exhale for five count, hold for five count,
• 1:38:06
Speaker 2: and then just keep repeating that right and it will
• 1:38:09
Speaker 2: completely shift your brain and your state and do it
• 1:38:14
Speaker 2: all through the nose. These are ancient practices. It's just
• 1:38:18
Speaker 2: it's great how it's now come back around and now
• 1:38:21
Speaker 2: the performance guys and the and the you know, all
• 1:38:25
Speaker 2: of these different types of people are like, oh wow.
• 1:38:27
Speaker 2: The breath stuff. I mean, this is ancient tumo breathing
• 1:38:30
Speaker 2: from the monks that would go out naked and put
• 1:38:34
Speaker 2: sheets of cold wet cloth on there and they generate
• 1:38:39
Speaker 2: so much heat they dry the damn cloth off. So
• 1:38:42
Speaker 2: so breath is huge in changing the brain state. And
• 1:38:46
Speaker 2: then you have you know, obviously food and you and
• 1:38:50
Speaker 2: I both agree, go for plants and eat as many
• 1:38:53
Speaker 2: as you can get the nutrient rich ones. And there's
• 1:38:56
Speaker 2: a place for superfoods right. The place is because or
• 1:39:00
Speaker 2: a modern day stripped out food and overstressed. We need
• 1:39:04
Speaker 2: these damn plants to counteract that stress. Obviously, move exercise,
• 1:39:12
Speaker 2: moved your by these change. I mean, I remember my
• 1:39:14
Speaker 2: master's program in psychology. One lady was kind of freaking out,
• 1:39:19
Speaker 2: like going through a process and blah blah blah, and
• 1:39:22
Speaker 2: the PhD teacher said, I hear you could you just
• 1:39:27
Speaker 2: run around the class. She was like, oh, well, well,
• 1:39:31
Speaker 2: what just take a little jog, because that little jog
• 1:39:36
Speaker 2: that took ten seconds changed their complete state. Right, So
• 1:39:41
Speaker 2: we underestimate how powerful these foundational things are. And then
• 1:39:47
Speaker 2: I would think and then quickly is I would also
• 1:39:50
Speaker 2: eliminate electromagnetic fields as much as possible. Turn off your
• 1:39:54
Speaker 2: damn Wi Fi at night. Don't sleep with that. You
• 1:39:57
Speaker 2: don't need it. You're not looking at your turn off
• 1:40:00
Speaker 2: that state of stress. Get out in the damn sun
• 1:40:04
Speaker 2: with no sunscreen. If you're freaked about the sun, at
• 1:40:09
Speaker 2: least do it in the first few minutes without sunscreen,
• 1:40:13
Speaker 2: because a nine SPF sunscreen cuts down your vitamin deproduction
• 1:40:18
Speaker 2: by ninety nine percent. And your vitamin deproduction is behind uh,
• 1:40:23
Speaker 2: the immune system, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, like all of
• 1:40:28
Speaker 2: that stuff. So these are again, these are found very
• 1:40:33
Speaker 2: very basic foundational things that when you do these things,
• 1:40:37
Speaker 2: it sets your mind straight. And then I would say, yes,
• 1:40:40
Speaker 2: in the superfood world, there's some cool things you can
• 1:40:43
Speaker 2: get into. I don't know what the availability is, but
• 1:40:46
Speaker 2: I do know that it's starting to be out out there.
• 1:40:49
Speaker 2: So the coffee fruit, and that is clear science. Friends
• 1:40:53
Speaker 2: of mine developed that I was down in Veracruz, Mexico,
• 1:40:56
Speaker 2: looking at the process and looking how they figured out
• 1:40:59
Speaker 2: how to use the fruit and the bean. And the
• 1:41:02
Speaker 2: cool thing that they found out and they did clinical
• 1:41:04
Speaker 2: trials on this is that alchemy increased the biogenesis of
• 1:41:08
Speaker 2: the brain, so it increased BED and F brain derived
• 1:41:12
Speaker 2: neurotropic factors just by taking that alchemy alone. This is
• 1:41:16
Speaker 2: not drinking coffee. This is a dried bean with very
• 1:41:21
Speaker 2: little caffeine and the fruit and that alchemy turned on neurogenesis.
• 1:41:27
Speaker 1: Just eat it like a nut or powder.
• 1:41:29
Speaker 2: No, it's a powder. And now there's some companies that
• 1:41:33
Speaker 2: are starting to have it in there and then and
• 1:41:35
Speaker 2: then tumorns and curcumen or with the turmeric are also
• 1:41:40
Speaker 2: showing to have BED and F. So there's zero evidence
• 1:41:45
Speaker 2: to support at any point not taking turmeric, right, So
• 1:41:50
Speaker 2: just consume turmeric and that's something some herbs and.
• 1:41:54
Speaker 1: If you can get the raw turmeric root. Yeah, you
• 1:41:57
Speaker 1: know at the market, don't buy the powder because you
• 1:41:59
Speaker 1: don't know how that was processing.
• 1:42:01
Speaker 2: Unless you know that, you know, unless you know where
• 1:42:04
Speaker 2: it's coming from, a reputable company. You can do that
• 1:42:09
Speaker 2: and then get a higher concentration. And then if you
• 1:42:11
Speaker 2: have some severe inflammatory situations, which a lot of people do.
• 1:42:17
Speaker 2: Then get concentrations of curcumen which will help the inflammatory thing.
• 1:42:23
Speaker 2: But and again then you know, there's several superfoods you
• 1:42:27
Speaker 2: can use for helping the brain. But again water, right,
• 1:42:32
Speaker 2: start with water, get your water in.
• 1:42:34
Speaker 1: Yeah, And intellectually, I think it's important to contextualize superfoods.
• 1:42:38
Speaker 1: Like if you're eating a junk food diet, but you're
• 1:42:42
Speaker 1: you know, then you've finished the day every day with
• 1:42:44
Speaker 1: two more you know, not going to match, but these
• 1:42:47
Speaker 1: are like you know, these are the sprinkles on top
• 1:42:50
Speaker 1: of the cupcake, right, but your foundation.
• 1:42:52
Speaker 2: Has ton solid. Yeah, but you know, I see both.
• 1:42:56
Speaker 2: Some people start with a bunch of superfoods, eating crab,
• 1:42:58
Speaker 2: and then they start to feel better and they start eliminating.
• 1:43:01
Speaker 2: I've seen both sides, right or the other side. Right.
• 1:43:05
Speaker 2: So you're, you know, eating good and doing everything right,
• 1:43:09
Speaker 2: and then you're adding the superfoods in and oftentimes your
• 1:43:13
Speaker 2: your sensitivity, you will be able to feel it. But
• 1:43:15
Speaker 2: I want to get away from feeling because it's like
• 1:43:18
Speaker 2: you know that apple a day keeps a doctor away.
• 1:43:21
Speaker 2: You're not eating an apple going, Yeah, I'm going to
• 1:43:23
Speaker 2: run up a Mountain. No, it's the same thing, like
• 1:43:25
Speaker 2: consistency with superfoods, drinking your you know, shout out to
• 1:43:32
Speaker 2: taro and for sigmatic mushrooms on a daily basis, Like
• 1:43:38
Speaker 2: that's an easy way to incorporate some of these some
• 1:43:42
Speaker 2: of these superfoods and just consistency because we're getting bombarded
• 1:43:46
Speaker 2: with stress and adrenaline and toxins. So let's get as
• 1:43:49
Speaker 2: consistent with healthy eating lots of plants and a bunch
• 1:43:54
  Speaker 2: of superfoods.
• 1:43:55
Speaker 1: What do you say, You know, there's a sort of
• 1:43:57
Speaker 1: countervailing argument out there, like there's no such thing.
• 1:43:59
Speaker 2: As a super food, there's just food, right, Well, yeah,
• 1:44:04
Speaker 2: well of course there is. So you know, let's use
• 1:44:08
Speaker 2: a very extreme example, and so calorie for calorie, you're
• 1:44:11
Speaker 2: getting a difference as opposed to a boloney sandwich as
• 1:44:15
Speaker 2: opposed to you know, leaves a maringa in a salad, Right,
• 1:44:22
Speaker 2: So you're getting so superfood really is per calorie how
• 1:44:27
Speaker 2: many nutrients you're getting per per caloric intake. So when
• 1:44:33
Speaker 2: you look at something like maringa, you're getting thirty five
• 1:44:36
Speaker 2: antioxidants and calcium, magnesium, potassium. And they call it a
• 1:44:41
Speaker 2: vitamin tree. For God's sake, so so an ounce of
• 1:44:44
Speaker 2: that compared to an ounce of a of a donut
• 1:44:49
Speaker 2: is not even remotely the same. So that's where the
• 1:44:54
Speaker 2: you know, get the nutrient density in so that you
• 1:44:57
Speaker 2: can get what your body needs to counteract the.
• 1:45:00
  Speaker 1: I think that's a good reply, you know. I think
• 1:45:02
Speaker 1: sometimes the word superfoods gets bandied about a little too liberally,
• 1:45:07
Speaker 1: but in truth, like these are foods that are incredibly
• 1:45:10
Speaker 1: nutrition you know, their nutritional value exceeds that of the
• 1:45:13
Speaker 1: typical food that you're counting across, and they need not
• 1:45:17
Speaker 1: be super exotic. I mean, you're you know, you're sort
• 1:45:20
Speaker 1: of in that world.
• 1:45:21
Speaker 2: But well, like blueberries, right, you know, try to get
• 1:45:25
Speaker 2: some wild blueberries, eat those every day. They know that
• 1:45:27
Speaker 2: that that is doing some phenomenal things around with the
• 1:45:30
Speaker 2: stem cells and things like that, and we know that
• 1:45:32
Speaker 2: that that is not to mention antioxidant. So it's like,
• 1:45:37
Speaker 2: be consistent like it. It's not rocket science. User, don't
• 1:45:41
Speaker 2: get caught into fads that kind of take you away
• 1:45:43
Speaker 2: from these incredibly nutrient rich foods because you're buying into
• 1:45:49
Speaker 2: this weird ass fad, you know.
• 1:45:51
Speaker 1: Right, So, speaking of fads, I'm going to get cream
• 1:45:54
Speaker 1: for saying this but the final question the the eight
• 1:45:59
Speaker 1: hundred pound gorilla in the room. Yeah, will the baruna
• 1:46:02
Speaker 1: kick you out of ketosis?
• 1:46:05
Speaker 2: That is so funny. That is so funny. Depends on
• 1:46:11
Speaker 2: how many carbs you had that day.
• 1:46:12
  Speaker 1: I guess. You know, there's a there's a uh, there's
• 1:46:15
Speaker 1: this this sort of percolating movement around a plant based
• 1:46:23
Speaker 1: ketogenic right, there might be something interesting there. You know,
• 1:46:27
Speaker 1: the more I hear about it, the less dismissive I
• 1:46:30
  Speaker 1: am of it.
• 1:46:31
Speaker 2: I mean, listen, this could be a whole big conversation,
• 1:46:35
Speaker 2: but there let's just say that there's applications for it.
• 1:46:39
Speaker 2: Where it gets gnarly in terms of true ketosis actually
• 1:46:45
Speaker 2: being in ketosis, and I think Tim Ferriss even mentioned
• 1:46:48
Speaker 2: one day is like, yeah, I think in my looking
• 1:46:51
Speaker 2: at this, ninety eight percent of the people doing ketosis
• 1:46:55
Speaker 2: are actually not in ketosis. So they're kind of living
• 1:46:58
Speaker 2: this kind of ketosis like life and eating this way.
• 1:47:03
Speaker 2: So you're not actually in these ketone burning fat burning zones.
• 1:47:08
Speaker 1: You're just eating a very low carbohydrate diet.
• 1:47:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, And the danger is the low micronutrient thing that
• 1:47:17
Speaker 2: I see. That's that's the crazy side of it. When
• 1:47:22
Speaker 2: you're you know when you can't also eat a high
• 1:47:26
Speaker 2: protein diet because there's insulin that the body needs in
• 1:47:29
Speaker 2: order for the protein to be utilized too. And that's
• 1:47:33
Speaker 2: what people don't understand, Like protein utilization needs insulin, just
• 1:47:37
Speaker 2: like carbohydrates need insulin. So true ketosis you have to
• 1:47:40
Speaker 2: actually peel down protein quite a bit for your body
• 1:47:45
Speaker 2: to actually then go into ketosis. Right. But you know,
• 1:47:50
Speaker 2: so from a sustainable, long term plan, ketosis is a
• 1:47:57
Speaker 2: really bad idea. Again, there's certain and you know, conditions
• 1:48:04
Speaker 2: that ketosis may be able to jump you out of
• 1:48:07
Speaker 2: and help you through, and there's some evidence to that,
• 1:48:11
Speaker 2: but it is by no means meant to be taken
• 1:48:16
Speaker 2: on as a lifestyle.
• 1:48:18
Speaker 1: Yeah. I had Walter Longo on the podcast I Love This,
• 1:48:22
Speaker 1: the leading scientist in the field of longevity, and he
• 1:48:26
Speaker 1: was very clear. I mean, this is a guy who's
• 1:48:28
Speaker 1: probably going to win the Nobel Prize. I think he
• 1:48:31
Speaker 1: was pretty close to already winning it. And he was
• 1:48:34
Speaker 1: unequivocal that, like, eating a ketogenic diet is the worst
• 1:48:38
Speaker 1: thing that you can do for longevity. And we could
• 1:48:40
Speaker 1: do a whole podcast on this. I don't want to
• 1:48:42
Speaker 1: get in the weeds on this. Maybe maybe we should
• 1:48:44
Speaker 1: do that, and we will do that. And we got
• 1:48:47
Speaker 1: through this whole podcast without the word vegan coming up once.
• 1:48:51
Speaker 1: It didn't even well you did say eat plants.
• 1:48:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, because it's like, you know, you know, I think
• 1:48:58
Speaker 2: like you, Like I have my personal reasons for eating
• 1:49:05
Speaker 2: that way and I thrive. And some friends of mine
• 1:49:09
Speaker 2: who are not eating this way say that I'm some
• 1:49:12
Speaker 2: sort of you're the outlier outlier or that, oh, because
• 1:49:16
Speaker 2: you have access to certain superfoods that no one else
• 1:49:19
Speaker 2: would have access to. My thought is like, uh, okay,
• 1:49:24
Speaker 2: that's not entirely true. But if you look at food
• 1:49:28
Speaker 2: from a nutrient density responsibility, then yeah, I think it's
• 1:49:32
Speaker 2: a it's a poor choice to eat meat for the
• 1:49:37
Speaker 2: demand that your body has to go through in order
• 1:49:41
Speaker 2: to break it down and use. Anyway, just from that,
• 1:49:43
Speaker 2: let's just just from that point of view, and you know,
• 1:49:46
Speaker 2: twenty to thirty percent of that said meat, whatever you
• 1:49:50
Speaker 2: eat is undigested and putrefying, so therefore you're having toxins.
• 1:49:55
  Speaker 2: But anyway, it's a Pandora's box. But yeah, it's an
• 1:49:59
Speaker 2: inefficient and see, from my point of view, I wanted
• 1:50:01
Speaker 2: to eliminate the middleman, Like why would I spend so
• 1:50:04
Speaker 2: much energy breaking down flesh of another being when I
• 1:50:07
Speaker 2: can have bruka nuts and Maringo has got tons of
• 1:50:13
Speaker 2: the amino acids and the amino acid cycle and recycle
• 1:50:17
Speaker 2: in the body, which a lot of people don't talk about.
• 1:50:19
Speaker 2: The body is really efficient, doesn't want to get rid
• 1:50:22
Speaker 2: of amino acids, so it wants to save them. Then.
• 1:50:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's something that that Brendan Brazier talks a lot about,
• 1:50:28
Speaker 1: like uh net energy gain. You know, the amount of
• 1:50:31
Speaker 1: energy that the demand that you're placing on your body
• 1:50:34
Speaker 1: to digest. You know, a steak for example, it takes
• 1:50:39
Speaker 1: it takes a toll. So where do you come out?
• 1:50:43
Speaker 1: You know, where do you net out in terms of
• 1:50:45
Speaker 1: what you're gaining versus what you have to expend in
• 1:50:47
Speaker 1: order to metabolize something like that.
• 1:50:50
Speaker 2: For sure, But we can.
• 1:50:51
Speaker 1: Talk more about that again. Come back anytime, my friend.
• 1:50:54
