- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. Like Melville MHA, Keith Russell dropped a
- 0:09Speaker 2: political bombshell this morning as debate on the Churchill Falls
- 0:13Speaker 2: Agreement was about to get started.
- 0:15Speaker 3: After much reflection, I have made the difficult decision to
- 0:18Speaker 3: cross the floor and sit as an independent member.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Russell says his decision to quit the PC caucus was
- 0:25Speaker 2: not one he made lightly.
- 0:27Speaker 3: But there are moments in public life when we must
- 0:29Speaker 3: listen to our conscience and put the people we represent first.
- 0:33Speaker 3: The people of Lake Melville deserve to be heard. They
- 0:36Speaker 3: deserve a strong voice in this Honorable House, and I
- 0:38Speaker 3: will continue to stand up for them, serve them, and
- 0:40Speaker 3: work on their behalf to the very best of my ability.
- 0:44Speaker 3: I make this decision with some sadness, but with a
- 0:46Speaker 3: clear conscience and an unwavering commitment to the people of
- 0:49Speaker 3: my district and the province.
- 0:51Speaker 2: A 43-year-old man from Nova Scotia is dead and a
- 0:54Speaker 2: child is in hospital with serious injuries following a collision
- 0:58Speaker 2: on the TransCanada near St. Jude's on Friday. The driver
- 1:02Speaker 2: of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the
- 1:05Speaker 2: scene while his young passenger suffered serious injuries and was
- 1:08Speaker 2: taken to hospital in Cornerbrook for treatment. The driver of
- 1:12Speaker 2: the second vehicle was taken to hospital for minor injuries.
- 1:16Speaker 2: The cause of the crash is under investigation. RCMP seized
- 1:20Speaker 2: the vehicle of an unlicensed, uninsured driver after he was
- 1:24Speaker 2: stopped for speeding in Harbor Grace last Thursday afternoon. A
- 1:28Speaker 2: patrol officer stopped the 46-year-old's vehicle after it was clocked
- 1:31Speaker 2: at speeds of up to 75 kilometers an hour in
- 1:34Speaker 2: a 30 zone. The Upper Island Cove driver has been
- 1:37Speaker 2: charged with driving with a disqualified license and driving without
- 1:41Speaker 2: valid insurance. A field sobriety test was conducted roadside and
- 1:46Speaker 2: police are waiting on the results of lab testing to
- 1:48Speaker 2: determine if additional charges of impaired driving are appropriate. Stats
- 1:53Speaker 2: Canada says the annual rate of inflation was unchanged at
- 1:58Speaker 2: 3% in August as a slowdown in rising gas prices
- 2:01Speaker 2: was offset by higher rent and travel tour costs. Here's
- 2:05Speaker 2: Michelle Zetikian.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Gasoline continued to increase in August, but at a slower pace,
- 2:11Speaker 1: with prices up 22.8% compared with 25.7% a month earlier,
- 2:17Speaker 1: as the conflict in the Middle East continued to affect prices.
- 2:21Speaker 1: But the agency says consumers paid more for travel, partly
- 2:25Speaker 1: because of a rise in fuel surcharges, while rent prices
- 2:28Speaker 1: also rose compared with July. StatCan says grocery prices increased
- 2:33Speaker 1: at a slower pace than overall inflation for the first
- 2:36Speaker 1: time in more than two years, with prices rising 2.8% year-over-year.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Michelle Zedekian, the Canadian Press.
- 2:46Speaker 2: A new tentative contract agreement has been reached between Jazz
- 2:49Speaker 2: Aviation and the union representing its flight attendants. Details were
- 2:53Speaker 2: not immediately available. The agreement must still be ratified. The
- 2:57Speaker 2: operator of Air Canada Express Flights, Jazz, employs about 1,000
- 3:02Speaker 2: members of the Canadian Flight Attendant Union, which voted earlier
- 3:05Speaker 2: this month to strike if a deal could not be reached.
- 3:09Speaker 2: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
