- 0:04This is living. Waters of Grace, the teaching
- 0:07ministry of Lewis Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary
- 0:10Chapel of Westmoreland County in Greensburg, PA.
- 0:15Now here's Pastor Lewis as he continues teaching through God's
- 0:18Word. Is this in line with what the
- 0:38apostles of Jesus Christ taught? That was their test and it
- 0:43should be our test. When we open the Scriptures, we
- 0:47should know what the apostles are teaching.
- 0:49So when someone comes in our company and they want to teach
- 0:53something or try to get you to consider something that is
- 0:56contrary to what the Word of God says, we should know what the
- 1:01apostles talk. What do the apostles teach?
- 1:05How does it line up with that? That should be our test as well.
- 1:09Have you ever read a passage from the Bible with a friend or
- 1:11a family member and noticed that you both interpreted it
- 1:14differently? In today's message, Pastor Lewis
- 1:18encourages you to study the Bible diligently, but also to
- 1:22learn about the apostles who wrote the passages under the
- 1:25guidance of the Holy Spirit. While spending time with God in
- 1:29the Bible is essential, it is equally important to know
- 1:32doctrine, to understand the intended message and the
- 1:36audience for whom it was written.
- 1:38Now here's Pastor Lewis in the book of Jude chapter 1 as he
- 1:42begins his message Building up yourselves and Others.
- 1:47So we're looking at verse 16 and I'm just going to read through
- 1:50and then we're going to go back and we will comment and it just
- 1:53says this. These are grumblers,
- 1:57complainers, walking according to their own lusts, and they
- 2:02mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain
- 2:06advantage. And we'll stop there.
- 2:09So one of the things that was really laid heavy upon my heart
- 2:13as I was preparing for this is I just sensed that there is a need
- 2:19for unity in the church. Unity, not unity in Word, but
- 2:29unity indeed, that we truly, truly love each other in these
- 2:35times. Because this is the time when
- 2:37the enemy is roaring the most. This is the time that he's
- 2:43attacking the most. This is the time that the enemy
- 2:46is the most active. Because I believe he knows his
- 2:48time is short. And one of the ways, the only
- 2:52real hope of this world is Jesus Christ and his church.
- 2:58And if he's going to destroy any hope of righteousness, it would
- 3:03have to be him trying to destroy the church.
- 3:07So I believe he's attacking the unity of the church.
- 3:12And I believe that he's doing that in a number of ways, but
- 3:16he's attacking the small areas. Remember we talked last week
- 3:19about how the, the boats would go over these hidden reefs and
- 3:25it, and, and, and it would get destroyed not by what they see
- 3:29on top of the water, but what they can't see under the water.
- 3:35It would be destroyed by these hidden reefs, these hidden rocks
- 3:39that tear up a boat from beneath, underneath.
- 3:43And there are things that can happen in the church that can
- 3:45cause a church to become divided from within the church.
- 3:52And Jude talks about that here in this verse when he mentions
- 3:56these are grumblers, complainers walking according to their own
- 4:02lusts. Now he's talking about the false
- 4:05teachers is what he's talking about.
- 4:08But this also applies to false Christians, you know, those
- 4:12tears that grow up with us and sit with us and we think that
- 4:17they believe what we believe because they profess that they
- 4:19believe it, but in truth do not. And these false teachers that
- 4:24he's talking about here, he says that they, they, they, you know,
- 4:27they're grumblers and they're complainers.
- 4:30And that is one of the first ways that the enemy would try to
- 4:32come in and cause a divide is to get people grumbling and
- 4:37complaining. If the Lord can get us grumbling
- 4:39and complaining instead of praying and praising that he can
- 4:43tear this place apart. But because we understand that
- 4:47it's it's these things that can cause these small holes to to
- 4:52take place in the undercurrent or the under body of our church,
- 4:58we want to be aware of it. And Judas said, I want the
- 5:00church to be aware of the grumbling and complainers.
- 5:04Even way back when the children of Israel first came out of
- 5:08Egypt, one of the first things that Moses had to deal with was
- 5:12the murmuring and complaining of the people.
- 5:15The Bible says back in Numbers 11 one that they were just out
- 5:20of they were just out of Egypt three days when they started
- 5:23complaining. The Lord showed his hand many
- 5:28times against Pharaoh caused them to be able to be let go
- 5:33after the after all of the the the miracles that he did there
- 5:39and he calls them to be let go. They came through the Red Sea
- 5:44that divided. They watched this Red Sea
- 5:46divide. They came through it on dry
- 5:49land. Three days later they're
- 5:52complaining and grumbling and murmuring.
- 5:58And that can also happen with the church.
- 6:00We can start complaining, we can start murmuring.
- 6:04All after all the things that God has done for us, rather
- 6:08individually or corporately. We can get to a point where the
- 6:12devil can put a light on something we don't like or
- 6:16something that goes against our flesh, because it is the flesh
- 6:21that does the murmuring and complaining.
- 6:23That's not of the Spirit that is the flesh calls us not to like
- 6:28something and we just start complaining.
- 6:31And unfortunately, when the people start complaining, just
- 6:34like these grumblers, they don't just complain amongst
- 6:37themselves. They go and complain to other
- 6:39people. It's not like they find these
- 6:42things that they don't like and they go to the source or go to
- 6:44the leader or go to the person that they have this issue with.
- 6:48But what they end up doing is complaining to other people and
- 6:52to try to get them complaining and murmuring and grumbling and
- 6:57it's all out of flesh. So we know back in #16 that Cora
- 7:04complained that he grumbled and he and he and he murmured
- 7:08against Moses. Moses, who are you that you
- 7:11should be the one to to make the call?
- 7:13God doesn't only talk to you. He talked to other people too.
- 7:17Who are you that you should be the ministry leader?
- 7:19You know, God talks to other people too.
- 7:21He can give me direction to run that ministry too.
- 7:24Why are you the pastor? God can speak to any of us.
- 7:28This is what the enemy would do. And he did that back in the book
- 7:31of Numbers and he and, and it caused the people to, to, to
- 7:35grumble and to and to complain. And Moses dropped to his knees
- 7:40and said, look, tomorrow we're going to settle this.
- 7:42The Lord is going to tell who is going to who he called for this
- 7:46position. And unfortunately, many of them
- 7:49lost their lives because they continue to murmur and complain
- 7:54and to rebel against the authority that the Lord put in
- 7:59place. Jude is telling us here, Mump,
- 8:02these grumblers and, and, and complainers, these false
- 8:05teachers, they complain against the, the, the pastors who were
- 8:08teaching the truth. They complain against the, the
- 8:12teachers who were teaching the apostles doctrine.
- 8:15And they're trying to get people to question it.
- 8:18They're trying to get people to doubt it.
- 8:22And he's already told him that because of that, God bless you.
- 8:24And he already told him that because of that they are going
- 8:28to be judged. Philippians tells us that we're
- 8:32not to do anything but complaining and grumbling or
- 8:36murmuring anything. Peter tells us that your
- 8:41hospitality, when we offer hospitality, we're to do it
- 8:44without grumbling. We do it without grumbling.
- 8:48So then he says, these grummers and complainers, they're walking
- 8:50according to their own lust. That is what motivates the
- 8:53complaining and the murmuring is because they're looking at,
- 8:57they're being driven by their lust.
- 8:59They want things to be done and whether they want to do it, not
- 9:02according to the word of God, but according to the way that
- 9:05they want to do what fits them, what will benefit them.
- 9:11And if the decision that's made doesn't benefit, then then they
- 9:14grumble when they complain about it because it's out of their
- 9:17flesh that these false teachers are complaining out of their
- 9:22flesh. So they're, they're, they're
- 9:25living according to the desires of their own flesh.
- 9:31And the thing about a complainer and a grumbler, they're never
- 9:34satisfied. So even if they did complain and
- 9:36grumble, and if you did address that, there would be something
- 9:39else that they would complain and grumble about because
- 9:41they're never satisfied, never satisfied.
- 9:47And, and, and it's because it's out of their own.
- 9:49It's out of selfishness, wrong motives and, and, and, and wrong
- 9:54way of dealing with things. It's evil they're just doing
- 9:57with their evil instincts or their flesh prompts them to do.
- 10:03And then the Bible says over here in the the bottom of verse
- 10:0616, it says in they mouth, great swelling words, flattering to
- 10:11gain advantage. Now these great swelling words,
- 10:15these are just like, you know, the, the, these men who will
- 10:17stand up and and and speak these long these vocabularies.
- 10:21You know, they have this great vocabulary and they can stand up
- 10:25and, and just dazzle the people, you know, with their vocabulary
- 10:28and their long, their big words. And you know, these words that
- 10:32sound so impressive and sound, you know, so convincing, but yet
- 10:36there's no substance. There's no substance.
- 10:39You still leave and and we're hungry, we're thirsty for what,
- 10:43what did I learn? What was I taught?
- 10:45What did I get from that? Because it's just like great
- 10:49swelling words but nothing of substance.
- 10:52And he said they flatter the people.
- 10:54And we know that the flattering of of the people, it is
- 10:58something that is also, excuse me, selfish.
- 11:00And it's of the flesh flattering speech.
- 11:04Again, that's due to manipulation for the purpose of
- 11:08manipulation to manipulate people to do what they want them
- 11:12to do. They pay compliments and, you
- 11:14know, in order to try to get advantage.
- 11:17And it's not even compliments that they're planning that are
- 11:18that they're not even being truthful about it.
- 11:21They're just speaking in order to try to gain advantage.
- 11:25But it's deceitful. It's deceitful speech.
- 11:30Now, don't get me wrong. Genuine encouragement is a value
- 11:36in the church. We need to have genuine
- 11:38encouragement and that's one of the reasons why I really love
- 11:42what I see in this body of believers often because I'm
- 11:45always hearing people encourage other people, regardless of what
- 11:49it is that they're doing. It's not just, you know, Clark
- 11:52and myself or people that are that are teaching the word, but
- 11:55but they also encourage the AV. They courage, praise and
- 11:59worship. They courage, you know,
- 12:01encourage the the announcements or encourage the people who are
- 12:05who are teaching youth or teaching the kids.
- 12:07You know, there's always people encouraging one another and
- 12:11helping one another and speaking life to one another and not
- 12:15tearing them down. This is what we are to be about,
- 12:18that unified church. And this is what the enemy
- 12:20doesn't like, which is why he tries to get people to grumble
- 12:24instead of build people up, complain instead of praise and
- 12:29encouraging people. And this is what he's saying
- 12:33about these, these these false teachers.
- 12:35He said they use flattery to try to gain advantage.
- 12:41Look, it's good to exhort one another in ministry, to build
- 12:45one another up, to affirm one another.
- 12:48Good to affirm one another in ministry, to let people know
- 12:51that, listen, the Lord is working through you.
- 12:55I can see the Lord working through you.
- 12:58And sometimes in ministry and in our own Christian walks, it just
- 13:02helps for somebody to just affirm what God is doing in our
- 13:05lives. It just helps, but it's with
- 13:09sincerity that that the affirmation and or that that
- 13:13encouragement, it has to be with sincerity and not just out of
- 13:16flattery, speaking in a deceitful manner, but insincere
- 13:21praise, like the flattery, insincere praise is only used to
- 13:26the to deceive and to the snare ensnare.
- 13:29Rather, you know, people who are unaware, people who are just
- 13:34unsuspecting, and it's not of the Lord.
- 13:38Proverbs 29 and five says a man who flatters his neighbor
- 13:42spreads a net for his feet. You know, he's literally trying
- 13:45to trap someone with a purpose or by means of flattery.
- 13:51Proverbs 27 and six says faithful are the wounds of a
- 13:54friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
- 13:59But sometimes flattery can feel like kisses, but it's actually
- 14:02knives going in the back. It's deceitful.
- 14:05It's deceitful. There's a couple things on me
- 14:07because Paul talks about flattery as well and and he
- 14:11talks about how when he came to teach and he came to preach the
- 14:15gospel, he didn't use flattering words.
- 14:19He was just used the words of the Lord Romans 16, starting at
- 14:25verse 17, he says, Now I urge you, brethren, note those who
- 14:28cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which
- 14:33you learned, and avoid them. For those who are such do not
- 14:38serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly.
- 14:43And by smooth words here we go. And by smooth words and
- 14:48flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple, by smooth
- 14:54words and flattering speech, swelling up, you know, words
- 14:59that swell people up, swell themselves up, bragging about
- 15:02themselves, but flattering you, they deceive the people.
- 15:07And then over in Second Thessalonians chapter 2, he also
- 15:11speaks about it as well when he was ministering to the that
- 15:14young church over in Thessalonica.
- 15:17And he ministered to them. And he said this to them over in
- 15:20First Thessalonica, chapter 2, verses four and five, he says
- 15:23this. But as we have been approved by
- 15:26God to be entrusted with the gospel, Even so we speak not as
- 15:30pleasing men, but God who test our hearts.
- 15:35For neither at any time did we use flattering words, as you
- 15:39know, nor a cloak for covetousness.
- 15:42God is our witness. We didn't use flattering words
- 15:47when we came to preach the gospel.
- 15:48When we go to minister to somebody, we don't use
- 15:50flattering words. We use the truth of the gospel.
- 15:54We use the word of God. We have to, we don't want to.
- 15:57We don't want to entice people by flattering people.
- 16:01That has a deceitful purpose. The word of God draws the word
- 16:06of God is withdraws. So then also he goes on in verse
- 16:1117 and now he starts to move from talking about these these
- 16:17false teachers so much and he now wants to talk to the body of
- 16:21believers. So he says, But you, they
- 16:25grumble, they complain, they murmur, they walk according to
- 16:30their own lusts, they mouth great smelling words, and they
- 16:34flatter with their tongues. But you, he said, beloved, he
- 16:41speaks to them like children. Beloved, you who I love, he
- 16:49says, remember the words which were spoken before by the
- 16:52apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 16:56Remember the words. Remember we talked about that,
- 16:58being reminded how the Bible was always the gospel was always
- 17:02talking about being reminded of the things that God talks about,
- 17:06the things that God says, being reminded of the word of God,
- 17:10being reminded. We come here every Sunday to be
- 17:13reminded you guys read the word all the time, but you come here
- 17:18because you're being reminded of things that like we said, you
- 17:21maybe have not read in a long time.
- 17:23God reminds you of these things. So he tells them.
- 17:26He says, you know, be remember the words which were spoken by
- 17:30the apostles. So remember what?
- 17:33Remember the word of God and remember who spoke it.
- 17:37Remember who spoke it, the apostles, the apostles who were
- 17:40the eyewitnesses of Jesus Christ ministry.
- 17:44Remember who spoke these words? Who gave you this warning ahead
- 17:48of time? It was the apostles of Jesus
- 17:51Christ. It was Jesus who taught the
- 17:53apostles, who now teaches you and then now sends you out to
- 17:59teach. Same thing where it happens in
- 18:02the church, right? We are learning from the
- 18:04apostles as we go through His word.
- 18:06We're learning through the apostles, the apostles doctrine
- 18:09and he teaches us the Holy Spirit comes into our spirit and
- 18:13teaches us these things and reveals the truth of, of what's
- 18:16going on and what God is teaching us, warning us about in
- 18:20his word. And then we build each other up
- 18:24by sharing it and reminding one another of the word of God.
- 18:30What a blessing that is. What a blessing that is.
- 18:34He uses us all. So he says, remember the words
- 18:39which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus
- 18:43Christ, how they told you. Now He's going to tell them what
- 18:48they need to remember and what they said to him.
- 18:50How they told you that there would be mockers in the last
- 18:54time who would walk according to their own ungodly lust.
- 19:00He told them that this was going to happen just like he's telling
- 19:04us it's going to happen. So we got to be aware of people
- 19:07that we sit down with when we talk about the Word of God.
- 19:10We got to make sure that we're seeing out of eye, that it's not
- 19:14somebody that's preaching one thing and we're believing
- 19:17something different. We got to make sure that we're
- 19:19seeing eye to eye, that it correlates with the teaching of
- 19:24the apostles. When I was studying this, I've
- 19:26learned that when, you know, back in the times that they were
- 19:29having these people who would come to their cities and they
- 19:32want to, you know, sit before the OR stand before the people
- 19:35and teach the word in order for them to find out or to make sure
- 19:39that that word is true and that it is the word of God.
- 19:42The one question that they have, their test that they have is, is
- 19:48this what the apostles taught? Is this in line with what the
- 19:51apostles of Jesus Christ taught? That was their test and it
- 19:56should be our test. When we open the Scriptures, we
- 20:00should know what the apostles are teaching.
- 20:02So when someone comes in our company and they want to teach
- 20:06something or try to get you to consider something that is
- 20:09contrary to what the Word of God says, we should know what the
- 20:14apostles talk. What do the apostles teach?
- 20:18How does it line up with that? That should be our test as well.
- 20:22Glory to God. So then he goes on and he says
- 20:25here how they told you that there would be mockers who were
- 20:28coming according to their own ungodly lust.
- 20:32He told us that there's going to be mockers.
- 20:35These people are going to come and they're going to mock what
- 20:39you believe. They're going to make you doubt
- 20:42what you believe. They want to make you turn from
- 20:46what you believe, turn away from God and turn toward them, their
- 20:51Antichrist. And as we said, Antichrist,
- 20:54meaning they want you to follow them instead of Jesus Christ.
- 20:59But you were told that you were told that in many places that
- 21:02there would be mockers who would come and that would talk about
- 21:07things that were other than Jesus Christ.
- 21:11You know, I just want to go back here real quick.
- 21:13The second Peter 2, second Peter 2.
- 21:16And this is what Peter spoke. And it's just kind of gives you
- 21:19that, that correlation between what the apostles teach.
- 21:23They, you know, they're they're all teaching from the same
- 21:27thing. They're teaching the word of
- 21:29God. And this is what Peter says back
- 21:31in second Peter chapter 2 verse 1, he says, but there were also
- 21:35false prophets among the people, even as there will be false
- 21:40teachers among you who will secretly bring in destructive
- 21:45heresies and even denying the Lord who brought them, denying
- 21:51Jesus Christ, denying him. This is what they're teaching.
- 21:55And then just go over 1 chapter over to chapter 3, same book,
- 22:00second Peter over in chapter 3 verse 3 says this, knowing this
- 22:05first, that scoffers will come in the last days.
- 22:09Scoffers, mockers, same thing people who will come and they're
- 22:14going to make you doubt the word of God.
- 22:17They want to try to convince you to turn away from your faith
- 22:22that Jude is now telling you to contend for.
- 22:24He said they're going to come in the last days walking how
- 22:27according to their own lusts. I'll even read the next verse.
- 22:31It says insane. Where is the promise of his
- 22:33coming for since the fathers fell asleep.
- 22:36All these things continue as they were from the beginning of
- 22:40creation, something to make them doubt.
- 22:43So we got to be strong in what we believe.
- 22:45And first of all, know what we believe, Be strong in it, strong
- 22:50in what we believe. And then I want to go down here
- 22:53to verse 19. I'm, you know, because verse 19
- 22:55is very important in reference to everything we just talked
- 22:59about because it gives you the sum, total balance of who these
- 23:05men are. And he says this.
- 23:08These are sensual persons. These are spiritual people.
- 23:12They're sensual people. That means they're soulish, that
- 23:15means they're worldly, that means they're carnal, no spirit,
- 23:20no spirit. They're not teaching by the
- 23:23spirit, they're teaching according to their flesh.
- 23:26So these are sensual persons who cause the visions.
- 23:30And that's one of the things that will cause the visions
- 23:32whenever someone begins to speak or teach or do anything out of
- 23:37their flesh, it will cause divisions.
- 23:40It will go against what the Word of God teaches, and it will
- 23:45cause divisions among the people.
- 23:48And then the last four words says this, not having the
- 23:52Spirit. And that's what tells us these
- 23:54people aren't saved. This has been Living Waters of
- 23:59Grace, a ministry of Calvary Chapel Westmoreland in
- 24:02Greensburg, PA Pastor Lewis Harrell has been teaching
- 24:07through the book of Jude. This is a book of warning as the
- 24:10audience that Jude was writing to was coming under attack from
- 24:14false teachers. Even in the early days of the
- 24:17church, there were teachers who claimed to have a unique
- 24:20revelation from God that superseded Scripture.
- 24:24Pastor Lewis wants you to be sure to be on your guard against
- 24:28those teachers today, as they will try to distract you from
- 24:32following the way of Jesus. By focusing on what God's Word
- 24:36says, you can call out false teachers for what they are and
- 24:41stay on the good path. Do you want to hear more
