- 0:01Speaker 1: I love the competition. I love to win. And I
- 0:04Speaker 1: also love to learn. And that competitive nature, that never
- 0:10Speaker 1: goes away. I'd like to have the same career as
- 0:14Speaker 1: these guys, only bigger and different. And I mean it respectfully.
- 0:18Speaker 1: And they all look at me like I have three heads.
- 0:20Speaker 1: You can't do it. You're not good enough. Don't even try.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Pack your stuff and go home.
- 0:25Speaker 2: How much leverage, power, credibility do you have where they
- 0:29Speaker 2: know they can't screw with you because you're going to
- 0:32Speaker 2: do it no matter what?
- 0:33Speaker 1: Not at this moment, but they felt the passion and
- 0:36Speaker 1: they felt a little bit of momentum. I'm me. And
- 0:40Speaker 1: the most important thing I could be is authentic. Be myself.
- 0:43Speaker 1: And Hollywood then conformed. Hollywood conformed. Conformed. To you. To
- 0:50Speaker 1: me when I became authentic and when I became myself.
- 0:53Speaker 1: And then I went, ah, I got it. How hard
- 0:59Speaker 1: do you actually work? Meaning what the audience doesn't see.
- 1:02Speaker 1: How hard do you actually work, DJ? Hard. You have
- 1:06Speaker 1: to work hard. Everybody in this room knows if it's
- 1:11Speaker 1: worth something to you, you've got to put in the effort. And,
- 1:14Speaker 1: you know, the tricky thing, as we know with social media,
- 1:16Speaker 1: is you let people in a little bit. You let
- 1:18Speaker 1: them in on what you want them to see. But
- 1:21Speaker 1: at the end of the day, I always feel like
- 1:23Speaker 1: social media may be the tip of the iceberg that
- 1:25Speaker 1: you allow people to see, but it's everything underneath the water.
- 1:28Speaker 1: that they don't see. And I always like to say,
- 1:30Speaker 1: it's the work we put in when nobody's watching that
- 1:33Speaker 1: really matters. Got to put in the work. How hard
- 1:36Speaker 1: do I work? I work hard. The person I compete
- 1:40Speaker 1: with most is just me. It's you versus you. When
- 1:44Speaker 1: I wake up in the morning, I have got to
- 1:46Speaker 1: be running towards the thing that I want to do
- 1:49Speaker 1: and not walking towards it. Not, I really don't feel
- 1:51Speaker 1: like doing this. Or why did I agree to do this?
- 1:54Speaker 1: Or why did I get into this business with somebody
- 1:57Speaker 1: at such, I got to be running to it. We're
- 2:00Speaker 1: lucky boys to be able to get to do what
- 2:02Speaker 1: we do. But man, the work ethic, the drive, that
- 2:05Speaker 1: hunger to compete, it never goes away. I've gotten really
- 2:11Speaker 1: lucky and fortunate over the years to have accomplished what
- 2:14Speaker 1: I've been able to accomplish. But again, the hunger doesn't
- 2:16Speaker 1: go away. I like to say I got a full plate,
- 2:18Speaker 1: but I could always make room for the stuff I love.
- 2:21Speaker 1: And I've reached that point in my life, reached this
- 2:23Speaker 1: point in my career where I I started to realize, oh,
- 2:28Speaker 1: you know, I've done pretty good, and we're sitting up
- 2:30Speaker 1: top on this mountain. A few things can happen from here.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I've reached this point in my life. We could either
- 2:36Speaker 1: stay here and enjoy the view and bask in it,
- 2:39Speaker 1: or we could go back down the mountain, ride off
- 2:41Speaker 1: into the sunset. I thought, well, the first two don't
- 2:44Speaker 1: seem like it's in my DNA. I know what we
- 2:46Speaker 1: should do. Let's go build more mountain. So I think...
- 2:52Speaker 1: For me, the drive just comes from wanting to do more.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I can trace back my work ethic to, we were
- 3:07Speaker 1: evicted out of our, we had a little efficiency apartment
- 3:10Speaker 1: in Hawaii. And we were evicted out of there, couldn't
- 3:14Speaker 1: pay the rent. The rent was $ 280 a month. We
- 3:17Speaker 1: eventually got kicked out. When we got kicked out, I
- 3:19Speaker 1: was 15 years old. I'll never forget it. I was
- 3:21Speaker 1: standing there at the door. There was not the padlock,
- 3:24Speaker 1: but the notice. And if any of you have had
- 3:27Speaker 1: this unfortunate experience, you get evicted, they tell you in
- 3:31Speaker 1: a week you got to go. If you don't, then
- 3:33Speaker 1: the Honolulu Police Department will come and they'll escort you out.
- 3:36Speaker 1: In that moment, I saw my mom crying and I just,
- 3:40Speaker 1: so I'm a mama's boy and that kind of pain
- 3:44Speaker 1: really impacted me. And I thought then, I want to
- 3:46Speaker 1: do everything that I can to make sure we never
- 3:48Speaker 1: get evicted like this again and make sure that she
- 3:50Speaker 1: is never this upset again thank you you know and
- 4:00Speaker 1: that then I thought I didn't even know what that
- 4:03Speaker 1: meant at 15 years old it just meant I have
- 4:06Speaker 1: to work I have to work I have to do
- 4:08Speaker 1: something with my own two hands so I have a
- 4:10Speaker 1: philosophy these days that you got to put in the
- 4:13Speaker 1: work with our own two hands because this is the
- 4:16Speaker 1: stuff that you can control we control the controllables as
- 4:18Speaker 1: we say the other part is a competitive nature that
- 4:23Speaker 1: is in my DNA and it's in my blood, just
- 4:25Speaker 1: like it runs in all of our constitution and our
- 4:27Speaker 1: makeup here, where I love the competition. I love to win.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And I also love to, I love to learn. I
- 4:36Speaker 1: don't say lose, I say I love to learn. So
- 4:38Speaker 1: I would say it's a combination of that. For me,
- 4:41Speaker 1: the work ethic comes from, I never want to be
- 4:44Speaker 1: evicted again, which is probably why I need therapy. And
- 4:49Speaker 1: the other side to that is a competitive nature. And
- 4:51Speaker 1: that competitive nature, that never goes away. If I'm able
- 4:56Speaker 1: to do that, get up in the morning and run
- 4:58Speaker 1: to it, then I'm in that place of joy and happiness.
- 5:03Speaker 1: It doesn't mean that the work goes away, the work
- 5:05Speaker 1: ethic goes away. You work even harder. For a long time,
- 5:09Speaker 1: what I used to do is think audience first. That
- 5:13Speaker 1: was important. And it served me very well. I started
- 5:16Speaker 1: to realize, oh, but I'm not running towards this particular thing.
- 5:21Speaker 1: So what I realized is now it has to be
- 5:24Speaker 1: the thing that I do has to be the thing
- 5:26Speaker 1: that I love to do. And therefore, almost like Hollywood
- 5:29Speaker 1: conformed years ago, I found that if it's the thing
- 5:32Speaker 1: I'm running to and I love to do, then everybody
- 5:34Speaker 1: comes with me.
- 5:39Speaker 2: What do you think that comes from? Like, is it
- 5:41Speaker 2: duplicatable or is it you either have it in your
- 5:43Speaker 2: DNA or you don't?
- 5:45Speaker 1: I think there's versions of it that are duplicatable, but
- 5:48Speaker 1: we all go through our own journey and process. So
- 5:51Speaker 1: there's something I think that we all can tap into
- 5:54Speaker 1: that becomes our juice and our wiring. For me, you
- 5:57Speaker 1: bring up my old man. My dad was a professional
- 6:01Speaker 1: wrestler at a time when professional wrestling, I think, wasn't
- 6:04Speaker 1: as globally renowned as it is today. When I decided
- 6:11Speaker 1: to get into professional wrestling, We had the biggest fight
- 6:15Speaker 1: about it. And ultimately he said, look, I'm not too
- 6:19Speaker 1: sure if you have anything to offer. I mean, it
- 6:21Speaker 1: got to that level. I understand what he meant in
- 6:25Speaker 1: his limited capacity to love. He meant, look, I live
- 6:29Speaker 1: in this little apartment in Tampa. I don't want this
- 6:31Speaker 1: life for you. I think there's more for you out there.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And I said, yeah, but I got to follow my
- 6:35Speaker 1: gut and my instinct. So I bring that up to say,
- 6:38Speaker 1: Along the road of life, we always have these moments
- 6:41Speaker 1: that are seminal moments where somebody, sometimes it's a loved
- 6:44Speaker 1: one like my old man, sometimes it's a friend, sometimes
- 6:47Speaker 1: it's a boss, sometimes it's a stranger who says, you
- 6:51Speaker 1: can't do it, you're not good enough, don't even try,
- 6:53Speaker 1: pack your stuff and go home. What I realized at
- 6:58Speaker 1: that time was there was a lot of naysayers and
- 7:01Speaker 1: there was a lot of cynicism as I was getting
- 7:03Speaker 1: into Hollywood, and I get it because You were successful
- 7:06Speaker 1: in another place, and now Hollywood comes knocking, and now
- 7:08Speaker 1: you want to try and come in and make a
- 7:10Speaker 1: name for yourself in Hollywood. They said, if you really
- 7:13Speaker 1: want to make it in Hollywood, then you can't call
- 7:15Speaker 1: yourself The Rock. You've got to lose weight. Don't talk
- 7:18Speaker 1: about wrestling. And you have to look and walk and
- 7:22Speaker 1: talk and act like these guys, and these guys are
- 7:25Speaker 1: the biggest stars in the world at that time. Johnny Depp,
- 7:28Speaker 1: Will Smith, et cetera. If you don't know any better,
- 7:32Speaker 1: You buy into that stuff like I bought into that
- 7:34Speaker 1: back then. But then you start to realize something starts
- 7:38Speaker 1: to eat at your gut about, well, this just doesn't
- 7:40Speaker 1: feel right because I'm not being authentic. I'm not being myself.
- 7:43Speaker 1: So finally, I said, a few years later, I said,
- 7:47Speaker 1: I can't do this anymore. I have to be myself.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Had a big meeting at the agency. I said, I'd
- 7:52Speaker 1: like to have the same career as these guys, only
- 7:55Speaker 1: bigger and different. And I mean it respectfully. They all
- 7:59Speaker 1: looked at me like I had three heads. And I
- 8:00Speaker 1: have a big enough head as it is. So they
- 8:03Speaker 1: looked at me like I had three heads. And I said, listen,
- 8:05Speaker 1: The Rock is a pretty cool name. And I love wrestling.
- 8:08Speaker 1: And I'm also proud of where I came from, from
- 8:10Speaker 1: this world of pro wrestling, where it's my dad and
- 8:12Speaker 1: my grandfather. And I have a lot of family in
- 8:14Speaker 1: pro wrestling. Just because it's never been done doesn't mean
- 8:18Speaker 1: it can't be done. Just means we've got to figure
- 8:20Speaker 1: out a different path.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Thank you.
