- 0:01Welcome to Extra Innings on the sports Card clubhouse with the
- 0:05hit list. I'm Jake.
- 0:07That's Matt from Providence. Matt, how are you?
- 0:11Hello, Jake. It's good to be back here.
- 0:14That's what it's called Clubhouse.
- 0:15I can't believe they keep letting us come.
- 0:17Back Well, how I somehow, somehow they keep letting us
- 0:20come back, you know? What I'm thinking, though, I'm
- 0:23thinking. That's what I'm thinking, Greg
- 0:28and Splendid. Yeah.
- 0:31They're outvoting Mike. They're what?
- 0:34They must be out voting. Mike, you got to think, yeah,
- 0:40when they brought on Jeremy Lee, Mike's got to be thinking,
- 0:43Matt's got to go. I mean, to be third, you want to
- 0:49be third, That's tough. That's tough.
- 0:52That's tough. And we're, I mean, that's tough.
- 0:54But Greg, smart guy. Greg school teacher, smart guy.
- 0:57He knows you don't get rid of talent and Jeremy Lee.
- 1:00Knows with talent. Talent, talent.
- 1:04What you make up for in hair you what you lack in hair, you make
- 1:06up for in talent. Watch yourself.
- 1:13All right, let's talk about a a fun topic.
- 1:17So we got some feedback on the last episode and it was very
- 1:21constructive feedback. I want to shout out commenter AF
- 1:25Raker or a Fraker 1 who said left a comment on the last video
- 1:31saying I'd love the to see the YouTube collector content
- 1:35creator community make an effort to steer the discussion back
- 1:38more to the actual cards themselves rather than more and
- 1:41more talk about condition grading, centering, I appeal,
- 1:43etcetera. And I followed up and had he had
- 1:47some ideas and I wanted to ask this question.
- 1:49There's a couple different ones here.
- 1:51Some of these we've talked about like how you got into collecting
- 1:53that kind of thing. I wanted to ask you this
- 1:55question and I I have a couple of of thoughts on this but.
- 1:59You know, let's talk. About.
- 2:00Some people consider us historians when it comes.
- 2:03To sports. And cards and sports cards.
- 2:07Not Greg, even though I was just speaking so highly of him.
- 2:10He didn't think that of me at least, but at least I'm the
- 2:15talent. Go ahead, just back to where you
- 2:17were, You know, just get the micro.
- 2:19Get the micro. You know, we could talk about
- 2:21it. You are a historian.
- 2:22I give, I give you full credit on that one.
- 2:24What else? Go on.
- 2:25The topic was times you remember being the most excited about a
- 2:31card, so I should have. Read the list this week.
- 2:35You have a card coming. Well, why don't I?
- 2:37I'll start. I'll mention one time for me.
- 2:40I have a couple of ideas, but this story has been repeated a
- 2:42few times by me. Oh, we got to hear it again.
- 2:46The Smokey Joe would that one. No, go ahead.
- 2:49Is that? No, you were going to think of a
- 2:50different. You were thinking of a different
- 2:52one for. Me.
- 2:52No, I was just joking. I was just making fun of you.
- 2:55It's. Another story that I have to
- 2:57hear again, but no. Listen, not everybody.
- 2:59You tell me. About SO not.
- 3:01So not. If they're on your regular.
- 3:03If it's on your regular channel, they don't hear it.
- 3:09I'm going to sail, tell the story, and then maybe that will
- 3:11jar something for you. And no, no, no, yeah.
- 3:13OK, so I wanted a Cracker Jack Smokey Joe Wood for a long time
- 3:17as a kid. I always heard so much about
- 3:19Smokey Joe and his story and how he had, you know, was this had
- 3:23this incredible year in 1912 and, you know, kind of blew out
- 3:27his arm and had a second act as a as a hitter and was had this
- 3:32great reputation. He coached at Yale for many
- 3:34years and kind of stayed affiliated with the Red Sox in
- 3:37certain way until very late in his life.
- 3:39And, and, and then I read I regularly other times and learn
- 3:45more about him. And so I really combed in on the
- 3:49Cracker Jack because God, what an amazing image of, of, of a
- 3:52ballplayer on a card. And the cracker Jacks, I've
- 3:55mentioned this before also that growing up Cracker Jack baseball
- 3:58card shop was the name of my LCS.
- 4:00And you know, and I, I always loved the little replicas, the
- 4:0393 replicas I had the whole set. So, you know, a couple of years
- 4:08ago when I got back into doing this, I really wanted to get a
- 4:11smoke, a Cracker Jack Smokey Joe.
- 4:13And I scoured for one. It was always hard because
- 4:16obviously Cracker Jacks are expensive.
- 4:18The Smokey Joe's expensive. You got to pay just as much for
- 4:21a Smokey Joe as you would for like any Hall of Famer basically
- 4:24in that set doesn't have a doesn't have a lot of cards and
- 4:27he especially doesn't have a lot of cards with the Red Sox.
- 4:29So because he has more cards later on with the Indians, but
- 4:33not with not with the Red Sox so much.
- 4:36What the Guardians? Were they not called the No?
- 4:40Were they not? What were they called in 1915,
- 4:42Matt? Well, they the Indians, I think
- 4:44they were just Cleveland. The Nats.
- 4:46They were the Nats. You're right.
- 4:48You know what? You're right.
- 4:49Actually, they were the naps. So there you go.
- 4:51Greg Cleveland. Greg, are you?
- 4:52Look, Greg, God doesn't know nothing.
- 4:55Historians right here, buddy. Historians right here.
- 4:58Cleveland he went to go play for anyway, so I was scouring for
- 5:02one trying to find the Redskins. Copy the poor Redskins of
- 5:05Washington. I'm talking about the.
- 5:06Red the wash. No, no, that road, they stink.
- 5:10Go ahead. The so trying to find the right
- 5:14one and obviously for me, I was going to need it was going to
- 5:16need to be a 1950 and most likely it was going to need to
- 5:18probably be a A1 or an authentic.
- 5:20So Stanlock vintage dealer Ohio based.
- 5:27He was set up at a show in Chicago.
- 5:29He posted on Instagram that he and he posted a picture that I
- 5:33didn't really get it couldn't see a clear picture of.
- 5:35But he had just gotten a bunch of Cracker Jacks back from PSA
- 5:39and I had talked to him at the previous Shriner show asking him
- 5:44if he had a a Cracker Jack Smokey Joe.
- 5:46He said no, but I should be getting one pretty soon.
- 5:48So a few months later he's got he set up at a show in Chicago,
- 5:51posted on Instagram, he's got the card there.
- 5:53I emailed him and I couldn't make out what the grade was or
- 5:56what the year was on the card from the picture.
- 5:58So I emailed him. He didn't get back to me and he
- 6:01was doing a show in White Plains the next weekend.
- 6:05Well, I decided to, it was a Friday and I was between jobs
- 6:10and I decided I'll just go. I definitely want to get this
- 6:14card if I can. And if I get it, I get, if I
- 6:20don't, I don't. Well, I, I get to the show, I, I
- 6:25pay the extra money to get in early.
- 6:27I go right to Stan's table. And I asked him about the I'd
- 6:31done deals with Stan before, so he knew me.
- 6:32And he was like, yeah, I got it right here.
- 6:34And so I look at it and, you know, as we know with Stan, he
- 6:39puts, he puts the prices on the back of his cards.
- 6:40That was another reason why I, I didn't really know what the
- 6:42price was going in. But so I, so I go, I look, he's
- 6:46got a price on the back. Is it?
- 6:47A 14 or a 15 by. The way it's a 15.
- 6:50So, so that's the thing. I get there and I finally see
- 6:52what the card is. It's a 15 and it's APSA one on
- 6:55the front. And I'm like perfect 'cause if
- 6:56it 'cause if I got there. And I saw that it was like a by
- 6:59the way. When you say you mean price
- 7:01point, like that's the cheapest way to get into a Joe Wood
- 7:03Cracker Jack. Exactly.
- 7:05Some people understand exactly what you mean by that.
- 7:06Perfect. Like, yeah, yeah, it's the
- 7:08lowest for like I get in as long as it looks good, but this is
- 7:11going to be great. Yeah, exactly.
- 7:13So he's got a price on the back and it's reasonable, but it's
- 7:15more than the cash that I had with me.
- 7:18And I didn't want to go to the ATM and take more money out
- 7:21again. I was between jobs and I said to
- 7:23him, you know, can you come down a little bit?
- 7:24He's like, yeah, this is as far as I can go down.
- 7:26I had a bunch of cards to sell. He wasn't interested in doing a
- 7:31trade 'cause he Stan usually kind of just goes if he buys
- 7:34stuff, it's usually pre war. He doesn't like he'll he'll get
- 7:37like collections of like golden age stuff, but that's not really
- 7:40what he buys at at a show. And it that's my experience with
- 7:45him. So, so I was like, all right,
- 7:48well. He doesn't trade.
- 7:50What's that? I was under the impression he
- 7:52doesn't trade. You're you're probably right
- 7:54with that, but. I yeah.
- 7:55So how I think is like, yeah, yeah, we can do this all.
- 7:58But like those cards, I'm going to give you this much money.
- 8:01Yeah. And then you can use that money
- 8:03to buy this card from this at this price.
- 8:05Like, yeah, he doesn't. Yeah, old school.
- 8:08Yeah, that is old school, but keep it up.
- 8:10So he said he. I said he's doing it forever,
- 8:13just like that. Yeah, he he said to me, go
- 8:16around with these cards because it was it was Hall of Fame
- 8:18rookie cards. It was like Brooks Robinson
- 8:19rookie, like a few other cards. He was like all around, you'll
- 8:22buy, you'll find somebody to buy the cards.
- 8:24So I go to right across the hall, right across the aisle to
- 8:28Brian Roth. I made a deal with him.
- 8:31I sold him a bunch of a bunch of those cards.
- 8:33I had just enough money cash to go back over to Stan's table.
- 8:36And I'm like, all right, Stan, we got a deal.
- 8:37And I'm like shaking as I'm putting the bills out just cause
- 8:41like this car, like it was this journey.
- 8:43Like I drove 3 hours to go to go to the show and the the card
- 8:47happened to still be in Stan's case and 'cause that thing
- 8:50wasn't going to last. You may not not even lasted that
- 8:52show and I got my card and Stan every time I see him, he always
- 8:58brings that that up. But that was that was like on
- 9:00the short list of the most excited I've been to buy a card
- 9:02was. Just that's cool.
- 9:04It was just this journey that like ended with me getting the
- 9:07actually getting the card It's. Called an adventure.
- 9:10It was an adventure, not a journey.
- 9:11All right? So, so what's, what's the
- 9:13experience that you've had where you were so super excited to get
- 9:16a card? So you told that story did
- 9:19nothing for me, triggered nothing for me.
- 9:22I can't think of anything. No, I don't think.
- 9:28I can't think of anything. Oh yeah, The Jack Johnson.
- 9:31The Jack Johnson. OK.
- 9:33Yeah, the Jack Johnson. So, yeah, Shriners, this the
- 9:36last Shriners we've been talking.
- 9:38I had just been talking about that card, the T 227 and the
- 9:42first table that I stop at while I had five minutes to walk, I
- 9:47walk into that card. Yeah, pumped to get that card
- 9:52and the other guy gave me a decent enough deal where like
- 9:56I'd buy, I don't remember. I I bought another car.
- 9:59I bought the Joe Wood. No, I bought the No, I can't
- 10:03remember. What it?
- 10:04Was it's a Caribou Hooper 16 Hooper.
- 10:07Somebody bought that this weekend, by the way.
- 10:10Yeah, big card, nice card that knocked out the price for the me
- 10:15to get to Johnson really pumped. Yeah, that was a great one.
- 10:18I wasn't shaking or anything or something like that.
- 10:21No. And I'm not against it like I I
- 10:23hope I have. I have that experience.
- 10:25But yeah, no, yeah, really cool card.
- 10:27That was and I was. I was equally as mad that I
- 10:30couldn't. I wasn't there that morning to
- 10:32that you could. Drop the card from me.
- 10:35The problem is with the how we have to buy big cards nowadays.
- 10:38If you don't buy them at a show, you know, you, you'll win your
- 10:40bid and then the card has to go to authenticity guarantee and
- 10:45then into your vault and then to me.
- 10:47And before I come, I get it, it's two months later, you know.
- 10:49But you know, even if you're in the auction house, you know, you
- 10:52wait a few days. But like at shows, I don't get
- 10:54to buy a lot of cars at shows for the PC.
- 10:56They just kind of stumble up. So like, yeah, good.
- 11:00You got a good story. That's a good story.
- 11:03Yeah, and I'll say like a couple other small ones, this, you
- 11:07know, recently I bought Wilson, Fred Wilson, Frank, Ted
- 11:09Williams. That was a huge moment when I, I
- 11:12refreshed the, the eBay because it was like and it said I had
- 11:16one and I, I, there was quite a, quite a bit of fist pumping and
- 11:21yelling and screaming when that. Happened LFG?
- 11:23Did you say LFG? I don't think so, no.
- 11:29I, I, I, you know, but it was, it was.
- 11:31More I'm a I'm a Westco guy. Yeah, OK.
- 11:34And then? When I was a kid, I'll I'll
- 11:37mention one other one. When I was a kid, I, you know,
- 11:41I, I would, we had two local card shops in town, which was
- 11:43great. We could go to card shows
- 11:45occasionally. But I remember when we bought a
- 11:50playing days Willie Mays, which was a 7272 tops.
- 11:54I think this is the last card with the Giants, I'm pretty
- 11:57sure. And that was really special.
- 12:01I mean, it's a beautiful card. It's got like the yellow border
- 12:04around it and he's wearing the Giant's uniform and that was
- 12:08really special. I was always, you know, such a
- 12:09big fan of I was AII was a historian at a young age and I
- 12:16loved Willy. Willy, you know, I think he's, I
- 12:20would still say probably the greatest all around baseball
- 12:22player ever. And, and getting up and I
- 12:27remember, you know, we didn't have a lot of money to spend on
- 12:30cards. You know, I would say the most
- 12:31expensive card we ever bought when I was a kid growing up was
- 12:35maybe like 30 bucks on an individual card.
- 12:38It was probably the most. And I remember going into, I
- 12:42think we probably went into one of the shops and saw that card
- 12:45and it's beautifully centered. And I have to imagine that we
- 12:49probably, we must have paid only maybe 2025 bucks for it.
- 12:52And I just, I cherish that thing.
- 12:54And I sent it to PSA. It got APSA 6.
- 12:58That's still, that's still probably my favorite card that
- 13:01I've that I've ever owned. You still have it.
- 13:03Oh yeah, yeah, it's yeah. Oh, I've never, I have no plans.
- 13:06I don't think I'll ever sell anything out of my childhood PC.
- 13:11Like I can't, I couldn't bring myself to do that.
- 13:15The only thing from my childhood collecting wise that I've sold
- 13:19was I sold you that Patriots ticket from the 9/11 the game
- 13:24after 911 and I used the money from that to buy my 50 Bowman
- 13:29Jackie at that same show that I sold you the sold you that
- 13:32ticket at. Oh, nice.
- 13:35Probably nice. I remember when I was a kid, I
- 13:38went, I would, I rode my bike to this card shop.
- 13:42It was across the Newport Creamery.
- 13:43That's gone now and the card shop's gone too.
- 13:47But so I went to the card shop and they had the guy had a
- 13:51Curtis Martin rookie auto like in like pulled pack auto.
- 13:58So that's like 19596. So I don't have the money.
- 14:03I think it's like $15.00 for this car.
- 14:05And that's like that's a lot of money.
- 14:08I remember riding my bike back to the house, taking my father's
- 14:12save change, putting it in something, logging it with my
- 14:18bicycle back to the card shop and walking in with this bucket
- 14:22of change. Oh, mostly pennies.
- 14:25I'm not getting mostly pennies. And the guys, the guy said,
- 14:29well, I guess you're lucky. I have a a change counter.
- 14:33And looking back, what? You were lucky.
- 14:35But anyways, yeah. So yeah, I paid all, all, all
- 14:42change. Wow.
- 14:43I was so excited to get that, that Curtis Martin rookie card.
- 14:47And then he went to The Jets and yeah, that.
- 14:49Was. That was the end of that that
- 14:51sent to that. Do you still have that?
- 14:55No, I hope some Jets fan has it piece of no no IO but that was a
- 15:00good story it. Was a Curtis Martin.
- 15:03I love that guy. It was such a bummer when he
- 15:05left to go to The Jets Hall of Famer.
- 15:07Great, great guy. Like just, yeah, big smile.
- 15:11Like just. I loved watching Curtis Martin
- 15:13running. Yeah, it was.
- 15:14That was tough when he went to The Jets.
- 15:15He was so good, man. He was so good.
- 15:17Had some great. I want to give a shout out on
- 15:20this platform to the young man that came up to us at
- 15:25yesterday's card show. Theo showed us our image on the
- 15:30What was it like Spotify or whatever?
- 15:32Yeah, it was Spotify. Is this you?
- 15:35That was so awesome. What a nice kid, Theo.
- 15:39Yeah, it was great. I can't believe we have a we
- 15:41have a fan. We have a fan, we have one fan,
- 15:45we have one fan between the two of us, I.
- 15:47Don't know he listens to the show during his homework.
- 15:50He will listen, does his homework and listens.
- 15:52To doesn't collect vintage cards, but likes our show.
- 15:55That was really cool. That was really cool.
- 15:57I know we just talked about it on the hit list on your net on
- 16:00your platform, but I wanted to share this on what's this thing
- 16:05called? Sports card clubhouse.
- 16:08I think there's no sports cards live with Jeremy Lee.
- 16:11What I get that was by the way #2 ball guy sports cards,
- 16:15clubhouse sports cards, nonsense sports cards.
- 16:18There's all kinds of sports cards there's.
- 16:20Sports cards, Professors. There's this, there's.

- 16:43he could be the best others the other guy.
- 16:46But like, it's like, no, it's just like I really, I'm really
- 16:48competing at that number one spot for both.
- 16:50You know, like it's, you know, you know, it's a tough, it's a
- 16:52tough one. It's tough.
- 16:54Yeah. All right.
- 16:56Is that how far are we into this?
- 16:57117 minutes. Oh, I.
- 16:59Think that's. Good.
- 17:00Yeah, perfect. All right, I hope he doesn't
- 17:02have a lot of homework this week.
- 17:03Yeah, yeah. But yeah, thanks for listening
- 17:06everybody. Like, comment, subscribe and
- 17:09collect.
