- 0:56Speaker 6: Dave Allen, Well, good morning everybody, and welcome to the
- 1:03Speaker 6: Dave Allen Show. You're on biy BADYWHS. I'm Amanda Baron
- 1:06Speaker 6: from WOWK thirteen News. Glad to be with you this morning.
- 1:10Speaker 6: Dave is off and not a bad morning to be off.
- 1:13Speaker 6: Dale Cooper is with me. Your babysitting this morning, and
- 1:16Speaker 6: I certainly appreciate it.
- 1:17Speaker 7: I'm just pushing buttons from the captain's chair, but you
- 1:20Speaker 7: have control of the shows well, lots.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Of fun time.
- 1:22Speaker 6: I'm very honored. It's nice to be alongside you. Of course,
- 1:24Speaker 6: it's a tough morning for so many people. A couple
- 1:27Speaker 6: of benches of snow in the Canaw Valley this morning.
- 1:29Speaker 6: It's very pretty, but if you're the person that has
- 1:32Speaker 6: to scrape the driveway or scrape the cars off, not
- 1:34Speaker 6: so pretty. Lots of kids home today, lots of parent's
- 1:37Speaker 6: probably scrambling trying to figure out what to do. We
- 1:39Speaker 6: hope you're warm and safe wherever you may be. It's
- 1:42Speaker 6: been a tough week weatherwise for so many folks, and
- 1:46Speaker 6: all of this snow is just compounding the issue of
- 1:48Speaker 6: flooding all across the region. So we're going to check
- 1:50Speaker 6: in first with my colleague from WWK, meteorologist Brian Hughes
- 1:55Speaker 6: and the storm Tracker thirteen forecasts. Brian, thanks so much
- 1:59Speaker 6: for getting up with You're always awake at this time.
- 2:02Speaker 8: I'm grateful that you're here.
- 2:04Speaker 5: I've been awake since one o'clock this morning. Everything's good, Oh.
- 2:07Speaker 6: Well, We are so happy that you're here. Thank you
- 2:10Speaker 6: for doing that. You gave me the wake up call
- 2:12Speaker 6: this morning to you and Koop just to be sure.
- 2:15Speaker 6: It's a late night after the eleven o'clock news. Hey,
- 2:17Speaker 6: so we got a couple of inches of snow. Exactly
- 2:19Speaker 6: what you guys said happened? Did happen? What's the day
- 2:22Speaker 6: gonna end up like today?
- 2:24Speaker 5: Well, we're still dealing with some of the snow bands.
- 2:27Speaker 5: A matter of fact, we've got a significant band so
- 2:29Speaker 5: that it's running across the running across northwest and southeast,
- 2:32Speaker 5: across Kinnawk County, especially up around Tupper's Creek back up
- 2:37Speaker 5: to Cissonville, and you know, actually coming out of the
- 2:41Speaker 5: John Davis power Plant, we've got some power plant effect
- 2:44Speaker 5: snow that's happening. That's enhancing a bit of that band
- 2:48Speaker 5: as well. I mean, it's incredible to see. We see
- 2:50Speaker 5: this all the time around the country, but with around
- 2:54Speaker 5: power plants that can enhance a band of snow.
- 2:56Speaker 4: But so we got that going for us.
- 2:58Speaker 5: But at the moment, just you know, just up there
- 3:01Speaker 5: at the Cistonville exit on I sixty four northbound, we
- 3:06Speaker 5: have real time traffic showing us that thirteen years World
- 3:10Speaker 5: Time Traffic showing us that right now the road is
- 3:12Speaker 5: shut down northbound Cissonville Walk or Drive. We have a
- 3:16Speaker 5: vehicle rollover. It's pretty bad scene up there with severe injuries.
- 3:20Speaker 5: So that's an alert. If you're going I seventy seven northbound,
- 3:24Speaker 5: it is shut down up there around the Cistanville exit.
- 3:26Speaker 5: But for the rest of this morning, we're still gonna
- 3:29Speaker 5: deal with some of the flurries, some of these light
- 3:30Speaker 5: bands of snow that are slowly starting to wrap up
- 3:34Speaker 5: across the area, and then we're going to be left
- 3:36Speaker 5: with flurries for the rest of the day. But over
- 3:40Speaker 5: the next probably one to two hours, still a couple
- 3:44Speaker 5: of these bands of snow are going to show up,
- 3:45Speaker 5: and they are going to produce some wide aut conditions
- 3:47Speaker 5: briefly and also some extra slick spots where road crews
- 3:51Speaker 5: have already attacked a lot of these roads. A good
- 3:53Speaker 5: part about it for this morning was that road crews
- 3:56Speaker 5: were able to attack everything at the overnight hours. Compared
- 3:59Speaker 5: to yesterday when it took you know, three four o'clock
- 4:02Speaker 5: in the morning for the snow to start. A lot
- 4:04Speaker 5: of it started about you know, anywhere from midnight to
- 4:06Speaker 5: one o'clock in the morning, so they were able to
- 4:09Speaker 5: get a better handle. But still, this is that snow
- 4:11Speaker 5: that's very fine. It's obviously extra cold with temperature to
- 4:15Speaker 5: the mid upper teens, and that allows for it to
- 4:18Speaker 5: not be very plowable. You can runt a plow across it,
- 4:21Speaker 5: but it doesn't do it doesn't do a lot of good.
- 4:23Speaker 8: So it comes right back.
- 4:24Speaker 5: So yeah, exactly, so you're really looking at so those
- 4:28Speaker 5: intersections really slick right now, and it's just you know,
- 4:32Speaker 5: and you can't bite this with all the salt because
- 4:34Speaker 5: when you look at the amount of salt you'd have
- 4:36Speaker 5: to use, it's just absurd. Speaking of that, speaking that
- 4:40Speaker 5: yesterday evening, I was able to sit down chat with
- 4:44Speaker 5: the mayor for a little bit, Mayor Amy Goodwood and Charleston,
- 4:47Speaker 5: and she said they have in the entire the previous
- 4:51Speaker 5: six years. You can add up all the salt purchase
- 4:53Speaker 5: of the previous six years. They've bought more salt this
- 4:57Speaker 5: year than the previous six years combined.
- 5:00Speaker 6: Goodness, gracious, well, we've needed it this year. I mean, really,
- 5:03Speaker 6: if you like four seasons, this is the year for it.
- 5:05Speaker 6: That's for sure.
- 5:06Speaker 8: We haven't had it in our latest in a long time.
- 5:09Speaker 4: No, we haven't. And you know, she and I were joking.
- 5:13Speaker 5: She goes, I thought, usually you like to have fun
- 5:16Speaker 5: doing your forecast stuff like this. I was like, girl,
- 5:18Speaker 5: I have fun all the time.
- 5:19Speaker 4: This year, I'm tired.
- 5:20Speaker 8: I bet you are. I bet you are. I'm trd well.
- 5:25Speaker 8: That means you are exhausted.
- 5:27Speaker 6: And we certainly appreciate all the work you guys have
- 5:29Speaker 6: been doing because it's it's kept us all safe, and
- 5:31Speaker 6: it's kept us all informed, and it's important.
- 5:34Speaker 8: It's just been so tough.
- 5:35Speaker 6: And then you think about those flood damaged areas and
- 5:38Speaker 6: the destruction that we're seeing there, and I just can't
- 5:40Speaker 6: help but think about mcdell County right now, especially and
- 5:43Speaker 6: just what they're dealing with.
- 5:44Speaker 8: It's like a skiing rink in some places.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Yeah, it is.
- 5:48Speaker 5: Listen, you add the snow on top of the flooding
- 5:50Speaker 5: and add insult to injury.
- 5:52Speaker 9: Litt War.
- 5:54Speaker 5: War, West Virginia and McDowell County hit the all time
- 5:57Speaker 5: record for the tug fork and in those records state
- 6:00Speaker 5: back to the eighteen hundreds, to to like the eighteen
- 6:03Speaker 5: eighteen seventies, eighteen sixties, eighteen seventies, and when you hit
- 6:07Speaker 5: the all time record on a river flood, you know,
- 6:09Speaker 5: there's just you have no comprehension of where it's going,
- 6:12Speaker 5: what it's doing. And then you look at you know,
- 6:15Speaker 5: the rest of the tug fork, and then you get
- 6:17Speaker 5: to the levisa a tug fork specifically, I mean these
- 6:20Speaker 5: this is the highest river spens in seventy seven and
- 6:22Speaker 5: it's the second highest crest they've ever had when you
- 6:26Speaker 5: go back to the eighteen hundreds. So you've got a lot,
- 6:29Speaker 5: you know, So you've got that big you know, the coal,
- 6:32Speaker 5: big coal, little coal, the you know, the guide dot,
- 6:35Speaker 5: all those rivers that went up, and then you also
- 6:37Speaker 5: look at the canal. I mean, it's the highest it
- 6:39Speaker 5: was it had been in four years. So you add
- 6:42Speaker 5: all that flooding push you had the snow on top
- 6:44Speaker 5: of it for recovery. Ever since, it's just difficult to
- 6:46Speaker 5: deal with. But the good news is for this weekend,
- 6:50Speaker 5: it's the first weekend out of the last four, you know,
- 6:53Speaker 5: cutting this weekend that we've not had flooding ongoing, and
- 6:58Speaker 5: we're going to have sunshine mixing in. Well it's not
- 7:01Speaker 5: going to be the warmest, still, we're going to be
- 7:03Speaker 5: in the forties. It's warm, and it's been all week,
- 7:05Speaker 5: and then as we head in next week, we're going
- 7:07Speaker 5: to be in the fifties. So there is good news. Unfortunately,
- 7:09Speaker 5: a little bit of shower activity on Tuesday and then
- 7:12Speaker 5: rain on Thursday. But still we'll take fifties dry skies
- 7:17Speaker 5: for at least four days so we can get some
- 7:19Speaker 5: work done.
- 7:20Speaker 6: Absolutely, it'll be a nice break for everybody too. That
- 7:22Speaker 6: sun goes a long way too, you know, a little
- 7:24Speaker 6: vitamin indeed is a body good.
- 7:26Speaker 5: It does. And we've got listen, we've got cracks of
- 7:28Speaker 5: sunshine back to our north and west. We're going to
- 7:30Speaker 5: see a little bit of that this afternoon, so that's
- 7:32Speaker 5: good news. But still another cold night. I mean, temperatures
- 7:35Speaker 5: may five degrees.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Below normal for today.
- 7:37Speaker 5: Goodness, and then yeah, and tonight temperatures fifteen degrees below normal.
- 7:42Speaker 5: We you know, we're gonna get others polar bart Tex
- 7:44Speaker 5: for a bit.
- 7:45Speaker 10: We do have an.
- 7:46Speaker 5: Opportunity to see the polar bar text one more time
- 7:48Speaker 5: next month, so we're going to keep our eyes on that.
- 7:51Speaker 5: But for now, let's the eye on the frize. Is
- 7:53Speaker 5: the sunshine of the weekend that's dry and no flooding.
- 7:56Speaker 6: Yeah, it's definite. We're not out of the woods just yet.
- 7:58Speaker 6: Meteorologist Brian Hughes with Storm Trackers thirteen. We are so
- 8:00Speaker 6: grateful that you're here this morning. Thank you go get
- 8:02Speaker 6: some rest as you were.
- 8:04Speaker 8: Talking to something like that, all right, something like that.
- 8:06Speaker 8: I see it today at noon, Brian, Thank you so much.
- 8:08Speaker 8: We appreciate it.
- 8:09Speaker 6: As we continue to talk about the weather this morning,
- 8:11Speaker 6: we should definitely go to our website and check out
- 8:15Speaker 6: some of the stories that Jeff Jenkins have posted there.
- 8:18Speaker 6: The devastation is great in so many places, Coop, and
- 8:22Speaker 6: it's just nice to see so many people coming together.
- 8:26Speaker 6: We're going to talk with somebody here in just a
- 8:27Speaker 6: little bit, Kevin Clendennon, the chief with the Clendon and
- 8:30Speaker 6: Volunteer Fire Department. They were out doing swift water rescues
- 8:33Speaker 6: over the weekend. So nice to see people who've been
- 8:35Speaker 6: there in Clendena and they know all too well the
- 8:38Speaker 6: struggles that come with flooding. So they're going to talk
- 8:40Speaker 6: about how they helped out this weekend, and that's coming up.
- 8:44Speaker 6: And just a little bit, we also have some big
- 8:45Speaker 6: news out of eastern Kennell County today.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Yeah, looking forward to this.
- 8:48Speaker 6: Yes, I'm really excited to share this with everybody. Lance
- 8:51Speaker 6: Wheeler is going to be here along with some guys
- 8:53Speaker 6: who definitely have that need for adventure.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Yes, that's nice tea.
- 8:59Speaker 8: The reals unite. This is a great thing. And if
- 9:03Speaker 8: you are into rough roads and I'm not talking potholes,

- 13:35Speaker 7: for Dave Allen this morning and has a very special guest,
- 13:38Speaker 7: we've been looking forward to talking about this and it's
- 13:40Speaker 7: going to get a little adventuresome in here.
- 13:42Speaker 6: It certainly is going to get adventurous because a project
- 13:44Speaker 6: that has the potential to change the face of eastern
- 13:46Speaker 6: Kannak County is underway and the people behind it are
- 13:49Speaker 6: here to tell us about what will be almost heaven
- 13:52Speaker 6: for people who love rough roads.
- 13:53Speaker 8: I think that's a fair assessment.
- 13:55Speaker 6: With a County Commissioner, Lance Wheeler here this morning, along
- 13:58Speaker 6: with it his guests Eric Large and Chris Ingram, thanks
- 14:01Speaker 6: for being here.
- 14:01Speaker 15: Guys, Hey, thanks for having us.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Amanda.
- 14:03Speaker 6: This is really a project that has the potential to
- 14:07Speaker 6: do major things for the Upper Canal Valley, for the
- 14:11Speaker 6: eastern Kana County, and it can bring in tourism. There's
- 14:14Speaker 6: some economic development here, but most importantly, if you're an
- 14:18Speaker 6: adrenaline junkie, this is an announcement you want to hear.
- 14:21Speaker 16: Well, let's back up for one second. You know, in
- 14:23Speaker 16: twenty twenty one, the Knall County Commission announced the project,
- 14:26Speaker 16: the Arc Gateway Plan. What that plan was was looking
- 14:29Speaker 16: at economic development for the Upper Canal Valley in eastern
- 14:32Speaker 16: Conal County and seeing what we can do to rebattalize
- 14:34Speaker 16: that area in that community. One of the things that
- 14:36Speaker 16: we heard multiple times from the people of Kanaal County
- 14:40Speaker 16: in Eastern County is we want an ATV trail. We've
- 14:43Speaker 16: talked to Hatfilm McCoy and we've been working with that,
- 14:47Speaker 16: but they continue to say we want an ATV trail
- 14:50Speaker 16: not only for our people to be able to enjoy riding,
- 14:53Speaker 16: but to have tourism and economic development, bringing businesses that
- 14:57Speaker 16: we've seen in southern West Virginia due to the hat Film,
- 14:59Speaker 16: a Quoit tra else and so this is something that
- 15:01Speaker 16: I've been working on for two years now, doing everything
- 15:04Speaker 16: we possibly can to bring that opportunity to the eastern
- 15:08Speaker 16: part of the county. This has been a big project.
- 15:10Speaker 16: You know, the County Commission has been working on economic
- 15:14Speaker 16: development through tourism and outdoor recreation. I mean, just look
- 15:17Speaker 16: at Shawnee for example. Look at the amount of people
- 15:19Speaker 16: that come in out of state spending their hard end
- 15:22Speaker 16: dollars right here in this county with our local mom
- 15:24Speaker 16: and pop businesses, but also the Tornado Trails dirt bike
- 15:27Speaker 16: trails we have in Tornado. This has been incredible. This
- 15:30Speaker 16: is another piece of that I call it an anchor
- 15:33Speaker 16: to our plan in eastern Connaal County. What this is
- 15:36Speaker 16: is we're looking at a multiple miles of trails for
- 15:40Speaker 16: ATVs jeeps that are going to be built in eastern
- 15:43Speaker 16: Connel County in the Quincy area. That's going to be
- 15:46Speaker 16: able to attract people not just here in our county,
- 15:49Speaker 16: not just in our state, but across state lines. This
- 15:52Speaker 16: is a big project. We're proud to announce Phase one.
- 15:55Speaker 16: We're looking at currently two thousand acres and putting in
- 15:58Speaker 16: those trails, but potential, we're hopeful down the road. It's
- 16:01Speaker 16: going to take time, but potentially having over one hundred
- 16:05Speaker 16: thousand miles of trails in eastern Kennall County. This is
- 16:09Speaker 16: going to be potentially one of the largest parks in
- 16:13Speaker 16: the nation. And so here with us is Chris and
- 16:17Speaker 16: Eric who are part of the Outlaw Appalachian Outlaw Trails
- 16:21Speaker 16: and they are local guys, local business owners who are
- 16:26Speaker 16: enthusiasts as you said, and they saw this project that
- 16:29Speaker 16: we had in the Gateway Plan. They've been working with
- 16:32Speaker 16: me in my office for two years now and we're
- 16:34Speaker 16: proud to have this announcement. I think it's going to
- 16:36Speaker 16: be a great opportunity, and I'm looking forward to them
- 16:38Speaker 16: being able to share their story of how they got
- 16:40Speaker 16: to where they are today on your show and talk
- 16:42Speaker 16: about it.
- 16:42Speaker 6: Yeah, this is so cool you guys, thank you so
- 16:44Speaker 6: much for being here. And I'm sure it's fun to
- 16:46Speaker 6: really get a chance to finally talk about the Appalachian
- 16:49Speaker 6: Outlaw Trails. Twenty five miles is there, It's ready to go.
- 16:54Speaker 6: How many more miles do you think you guys are
- 16:58Speaker 6: going to get accomplished as you were on phase one?
- 17:01Speaker 8: It's so cool.
- 17:02Speaker 3: Into phase one, we're looking to easily double our expansion
- 17:05Speaker 3: within the core project there at phase one, with the
- 17:09Speaker 3: ability to grow that pretty substantially over the next few years.
- 17:13Speaker 3: But it's an easy double within as in weather breaks here.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Our core focus right now with Phase one was truly
- 17:18Speaker 3: creating the infrastructure to kind of build off of for
- 17:21Speaker 3: the later phases and truly kind of create a resort
- 17:25Speaker 3: experience as we start for the trailhead. We are located
- 17:30Speaker 3: really well for a project like this, with one mile
- 17:32Speaker 3: off of Interstate sixty four. We have a red light
- 17:35Speaker 3: offer Route sixty headed into a two lane blacktop that
- 17:38Speaker 3: brings us up to a few hundred acres of flat
- 17:40Speaker 3: developable area to truly start this as a good off
- 17:45Speaker 3: road park setting, and so our goal has been here
- 17:48Speaker 3: into phase one is naturally to get started as a
- 17:50Speaker 3: trailhead and start building the needed trails from that start location,
- 17:55Speaker 3: but to really host some large events that are coming
- 17:57Speaker 3: to our area that are really exciting for economic growth.
- 18:00Speaker 3: We've been working with Ultra four Racing Series, which is
- 18:02Speaker 3: a large UTV full size kind of trophy truck series.
- 18:07Speaker 3: They're super big out west. They wanted to have an
- 18:09Speaker 3: East East coast kind of footprint, and so we're looking
- 18:12Speaker 3: to bring about fifteen thousand people for our year one event,
- 18:15Speaker 3: which is slated for twenty twenty six. They have went
- 18:18Speaker 3: ahead and kind of put us in the driver's seat
- 18:20Speaker 3: to build them a full track of facility there. We
- 18:23Speaker 3: have a fifteen mile course this built on the property
- 18:26Speaker 3: already that is pro their specs, along with a few
- 18:28Speaker 3: other events like West Virginia Agency gn CC Racing, which
- 18:32Speaker 3: is nationwide that's ATV and dirt bikes. They're looking to
- 18:37Speaker 3: bring a series to us next year as well. So
- 18:38Speaker 3: our true goal here for phase one is to establish
- 18:41Speaker 3: some infrastructure on the mountain to try to bring in
- 18:44Speaker 3: some large events bring in a lot of people to
- 18:46Speaker 3: the county and we're hoping that's going to kickstart us
- 18:48Speaker 3: into our growth into our later phases.
- 18:51Speaker 6: It's an exciting time and exciting project that's Derek larger
- 18:54Speaker 6: with the Appalachian Outlaw Trails. Chris Ingram, what was the
- 18:58Speaker 6: motivation behind this project for you?
- 19:01Speaker 14: I know you're an enthusiast, definitely, So we've I grew
- 19:05Speaker 14: up riding ATVs and dirt bikes and side by sides,
- 19:07Speaker 14: and I'm actually from the Upercannal Valley myself, so it's
- 19:11Speaker 14: always been near and dear to my heart. It's full
- 19:12Speaker 14: of great people, and I wanted to do something big
- 19:16Speaker 14: for our area to bring, you know, jobs and economic
- 19:19Speaker 14: growth to the Perkanal Valley. So I think this will
- 19:21Speaker 14: be a great project and I think we'll definitely achieve that.
- 19:25Speaker 8: Tell people a little more about where exactly.
- 19:28Speaker 14: This is, Yeah, So it's located across from Riverside High School.
- 19:33Speaker 14: There is a two lane blacktop road to the top
- 19:35Speaker 14: of the mountain. It's actually I guess slated as Diamond,
- 19:38Speaker 14: West Virginia, but it's right there near Bell and that
- 19:41Speaker 14: will be the official trailhead due to its great access,
- 19:44Speaker 14: low residential impact, and.
- 19:47Speaker 15: It's located in Quincy.
- 19:49Speaker 6: And no doubt about it the folks that live out
- 19:51Speaker 6: there and beyond. But you know we have there are
- 19:53Speaker 6: a lot of enthusiasts just in that part of Kanaw
- 19:56Speaker 6: County who will love this. I know you want to
- 19:58Speaker 6: make it a destination with some campsites with some hookups,
- 20:01Speaker 6: and then some primitive campsites as well, But we also
- 20:05Speaker 6: are talking about maybe like a little concert venue.
- 20:07Speaker 8: Is that right?
- 20:09Speaker 15: Yeah?
- 20:09Speaker 3: Yeah, So we're talking about in our as we scale
- 20:12Speaker 3: up into our master plan that the Kinon County Commission
- 20:15Speaker 3: and has worked with us along with CEC Engineering, we
- 20:19Speaker 3: are looking to not only create this is just some campsites,
- 20:22Speaker 3: but you know, cabins and amphitheater of some capacity. And
- 20:25Speaker 3: our true goal is, although we are enthusiasts, this is
- 20:28Speaker 3: something that's near and dear to our heart to have
- 20:31Speaker 3: a good expansive off road trail system in the area.
- 20:35Speaker 3: We want to truly create an area for all outdoor
- 20:38Speaker 3: wreck whether that is mountain biking or single track dirt
- 20:42Speaker 3: bike riding, from you know, hiking, horseback riding, having clay
- 20:48Speaker 3: shooting venues, just anything that would bring somebody in that
- 20:52Speaker 3: they would like to enjoy something that is not just
- 20:55Speaker 3: off road access, that's truly an outdoor wreck destination.
- 20:58Speaker 6: Yeah, something for everybody, because you might have someone in
- 21:00Speaker 6: the family who's maybe not so keen on getting in
- 21:03Speaker 6: the big truck and riding along all the rocks and
- 21:05Speaker 6: the great roads that are out there, but they might
- 21:07Speaker 6: enjoy something else or just sitting by a campfire. And
- 21:10Speaker 6: you guys are really working to make that destination happen
- 21:13Speaker 6: and it's exciting. So there's twenty five miles there already
- 21:17Speaker 6: and we can expect to see more here very soon, right.
- 21:19Speaker 3: Yes, yes, as soon as weather breaks. You know, we're
- 21:22Speaker 3: going to continue our excavation portion of separate things. And
- 21:26Speaker 3: as we're expanding our acreage here, we've got a lot
- 21:29Speaker 3: of other trails are already slated to go in to truly
- 21:32Speaker 3: raise that mileage aspect of some stuff that's already existing
- 21:36Speaker 3: and some things that we're going to go ahead and
- 21:38Speaker 3: establish there.
- 21:39Speaker 6: Okay, Well, County Commissioner Lance Wheeler is with us along
- 21:43Speaker 6: with Chris Ingram and Eric Large with the Appalache and
- 21:46Speaker 6: Outlaw trails, and I just want to ask you about
- 21:49Speaker 6: the bigger picture when it comes to the Upper canav Valley.
- 21:52Speaker 6: Of course, it's a place that was coal was such
- 21:55Speaker 6: an important part of that and we're seeing some changes
- 21:57Speaker 6: in that industry. We continue to see those changes. This
- 22:00Speaker 6: project is one piece of a bigger plan.
- 22:04Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 22:04Speaker 16: You know, when you talk to people in eastern Knalk County,
- 22:06Speaker 16: the thing that they will say is one of the
- 22:08Speaker 16: things that we have that's best selling us is our mountains,
- 22:12Speaker 16: our beautiful environment. People want to come. You know, when
- 22:15Speaker 16: you come there, you see and you're in awe. And
- 22:17Speaker 16: so this is part of that gateway plan that I mentioned,
- 22:20Speaker 16: and I believe what we're talking about today with these
- 22:23Speaker 16: trails is an anchor to this ability to be able
- 22:26Speaker 16: to improve economic development businesses, restaurants, hotels, gas stations, and
- 22:33Speaker 16: when we talk about this, we don't talk about just
- 22:36Speaker 16: economic development.
- 22:37Speaker 8: We talk about the community.
- 22:38Speaker 16: This is what I'm most proud about is that we
- 22:40Speaker 16: have Eric and Chris who are local guys, local business
- 22:43Speaker 16: owners who understand our area, understand our people, and they're
- 22:46Speaker 16: willing to invest into this project and make something great
- 22:50Speaker 16: because they care about our community. This isn't an outside
- 22:53Speaker 16: investor coming in and putting in the money. These are
- 22:56Speaker 16: people who know us, they understand us, and they're willing
- 22:59Speaker 16: to work work with us, and they know where we
- 23:01Speaker 16: really need a.
- 23:02Speaker 15: Lot of these problems and solutions.
- 23:04Speaker 16: And so that's what has been incredible working for them
- 23:07Speaker 16: for two years now and having them work with the
- 23:10Speaker 16: Kennall County Commission, getting them this planning, this master plan
- 23:13Speaker 16: together and helping them along. And that's what's exciting about
- 23:17Speaker 16: Phase one. Phase one, twenty five miles doesn't seem like
- 23:20Speaker 16: a lot, but there's multiple phases from here, and we're
- 23:23Speaker 16: going to continue to work. We're going to continue to push,
- 23:25Speaker 16: but we can't get to the finish line if we
- 23:28Speaker 16: don't start at the starting line, right Amana. So today
- 23:30Speaker 16: we're starting at the starting line. We're very excited about that.
- 23:33Speaker 16: I'm excited to work with them, and I know they've
- 23:35Speaker 16: had conversations with the state, had conversations with the state Tourism.
- 23:39Speaker 16: We're going to continue to work together as a team
- 23:42Speaker 16: because that's what's given us the most progress in this county.
- 23:45Speaker 16: And I'm excited to see what this is going to foretelled.
- 23:48Speaker 16: At the very end, I think we're going to have
- 23:50Speaker 16: something extremely incredible, not just for tourism, but for the community,
- 23:54Speaker 16: a place that families can bring their kids from Bell,
- 23:57Speaker 16: from Quincy, from Diamond, from Cedar Grove, and from out
- 24:01Speaker 16: of state. But you know, locally, we can have an
- 24:03Speaker 16: area that it's safe for them to go. It's going
- 24:06Speaker 16: to be maintained and they're going to have a lot
- 24:08Speaker 16: of enjoyment. And then that community aspect you mentioned, you know,
- 24:11Speaker 16: the Amphitheater, those things down the road that we can
- 24:14Speaker 16: give into that community and really provide the culture and
- 24:17Speaker 16: the spirit of that area and really show it to
- 24:20Speaker 16: the rest of the world. That's what's incredible to me.
- 24:22Speaker 6: It's a cornerstone for sure. Just to get in the
- 24:24Speaker 6: weeds for a second. You guys, tell me about these
- 24:26Speaker 6: roads that are out there.
- 24:28Speaker 17: Roads.
- 24:28Speaker 6: I put that in quotes here as got your face
- 24:30Speaker 6: is just lit up when I said that, Why are
- 24:33Speaker 6: these spots in eastern Kanak County so awesome to take
- 24:36Speaker 6: your off road vehicles on?
- 24:37Speaker 15: Well, I'll tell you we.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Have always been involved in this space, and I guess
- 24:42Speaker 3: I'll kind of tea back on that. What the real
- 24:44Speaker 3: mission of this was is Chris and I have grown
- 24:45Speaker 3: up enthusiasts. We've been spending most of our time in
- 24:48Speaker 3: the outdoors as kids, we spend the majority of that
- 24:51Speaker 3: time riding ATVs and dirt bikes and later on when
- 24:54Speaker 3: things progress into UTVs, and so this has been our
- 24:56Speaker 3: true passion for anything that we do on the weekends
- 24:59Speaker 3: with our our families, with our kids. And so our
- 25:02Speaker 3: true goal was we grew up riding this area most
- 25:06Speaker 3: of our lives and as everybody knows, it's a lot
- 25:08Speaker 3: of different private properties and over the years there's been
- 25:11Speaker 3: a lot of different encumbrances you run into of some
- 25:13Speaker 3: properties maybe getting shut down and our access being taken
- 25:17Speaker 3: from us in some capacity. And so our true goal
- 25:19Speaker 3: with this is kind of really a personal project that
- 25:22Speaker 3: we wanted to preserve our access to this trail usage
- 25:25Speaker 3: for ourselves, and in tandem with that, you know, we're
- 25:29Speaker 3: essentially creating the ability for everyone to enjoy it in
- 25:32Speaker 3: the future that is local and from out of state.
- 25:34Speaker 3: So you know, the area we have truly is a
- 25:38Speaker 3: gold mine in the capacity that is some of the
- 25:40Speaker 3: best trail systems that we've ever been around. You know,
- 25:43Speaker 3: we've ridden all over the East Coast, We've ridden in
- 25:46Speaker 3: Tennessee and Kentucky and all these different large off road
- 25:49Speaker 3: park areas. These public riding state agency areas. And one
- 25:53Speaker 3: thing we'll find is we always enjoy coming back home
- 25:56Speaker 3: and enjoying our area here. And we've brought a lot
- 25:58Speaker 3: of people over the years from out of state to
- 26:00Speaker 3: hear that continue to come back, and you know, it's
- 26:04Speaker 3: truly something a lot of people don't understand until they
- 26:06Speaker 3: actually step out of Kennall County that we have something
- 26:09Speaker 3: that's wonderful here.
- 26:11Speaker 4: It is truly a.
- 26:12Speaker 3: Passion project of Chris and I to conserve the trail
- 26:14Speaker 3: system we have now and be able to allow that
- 26:17Speaker 3: to expand in the future and let everybody that enjoys
- 26:19Speaker 3: it now be able to continue to enjoy it with
- 26:21Speaker 3: their family moving forward.
- 26:22Speaker 6: Yes, families are going to be very excited about this.
- 26:25Speaker 6: And I also just really quickly want to touch on this, Chris,
- 26:27Speaker 6: there's a spin off here because it's not just about
- 26:30Speaker 6: the trails, but there are people who are excited about
- 26:33Speaker 6: this because of the other opportunities it's going to bring
- 26:36Speaker 6: as far as equipment and things like that.
- 26:39Speaker 8: Talk about that.
- 26:40Speaker 14: Yeah, So essentially we're going to have, you know, a
- 26:43Speaker 14: rental fleet and I think that you know, that'll be
- 26:46Speaker 14: good for people who are wanting to fly into the
- 26:47Speaker 14: area and enjoy the park. But then also at a
- 26:49Speaker 14: local level. You know, I think rising water raises all ships.
- 26:54Speaker 14: You're going to have locals who will make investments themselves
- 26:57Speaker 14: and to you know, basically open businesses, businesses. I'll support
- 27:00Speaker 14: the project, and you know that's just our overall overall
- 27:04Speaker 14: goal is to make make you know, economic development as
- 27:09Speaker 14: a whole for the All I know.
- 27:11Speaker 6: Is that's buffet. Better stock up the shones buffet that
- 27:14Speaker 6: is out there at Quincy. You've been put on notice.
- 27:17Speaker 7: That's always the best, right. We did have a question
- 27:18Speaker 7: that we had a flood of questions actually coming in
- 27:20Speaker 7: on the text line. So I'm just going to kind
- 27:21Speaker 7: of sum them all up and once people want dates,
- 27:23Speaker 7: they want to when you've tapped into something, because a
- 27:25Speaker 7: lot of people want to know when are they going
- 27:27Speaker 7: to be able to take advantage of the system.
- 27:29Speaker 3: So, of course we've been working on this project since
- 27:30Speaker 3: twenty twenty one and I want to well, I've got
- 27:33Speaker 3: the moment here.
- 27:33Speaker 15: I want to thank Commissioner Wheeler.
- 27:35Speaker 3: You've been wonderful to help us along as we grow
- 27:38Speaker 3: and we can't thank you guys enough, the County Commission.
- 27:40Speaker 15: But you know, one thing after another.
- 27:42Speaker 3: It's we've been building towards this, right, And that's one
- 27:44Speaker 3: thing we get asked every year, what's the date? And
- 27:46Speaker 3: it's always man, we're hoping for Springing next year. We're
- 27:48Speaker 3: host to Springing next year. We were talking to those
- 27:52Speaker 3: larger event venues about potentially being on their their schedule
- 27:56Speaker 3: for twenty twenty five.
- 27:58Speaker 15: With the lack of infrastructure that.
- 27:59Speaker 3: We were able to really truly provide these events in
- 28:01Speaker 3: a real professional manner, we had to push a lot
- 28:04Speaker 3: of that stuff off till next year. So as of
- 28:06Speaker 3: right now, we're looking at probably spring of twenty six.
- 28:09Speaker 3: You know, we've got a lot of existing things that
- 28:12Speaker 3: are there now we could open today, but to open
- 28:15Speaker 3: a true professional fashion and be able to manage everything
- 28:17Speaker 3: correctly from you know, a safety aspect or just generally
- 28:22Speaker 3: having the needed amenities, we're probably looking at sometime next
- 28:25Speaker 3: year is where we're headed right now.
- 28:27Speaker 7: I have great empathy for that. Ask us when our
- 28:29Speaker 7: new studios are going to be ready? Right, right, have
- 28:31Speaker 7: great empathy where.
- 28:32Speaker 8: You're when it's ready?
- 28:33Speaker 6: Right, As a good contractor would say, when it is ready.
- 28:36Speaker 8: I didn't even know you guys were coming on.
- 28:38Speaker 6: What the topic was going to be, and I know
- 28:39Speaker 6: that there are some people at my house very excited
- 28:42Speaker 6: about this project this morning, so I know that that's
- 28:45Speaker 6: a ripple effect all across our community.
- 28:47Speaker 8: Thanks for coming in, you guys, appreciate it.
- 28:49Speaker 16: Hey man, thanks for having us.
- 28:50Speaker 8: Oh, it's my pleasure and Dave's pleasure as well.
- 28:52Speaker 6: In Coops, we're glad to be here, and we're glad
- 28:56Speaker 6: to know that people are making such an awesome investment
- 28:58Speaker 6: in our natural resource.
- 29:00Speaker 10: Is.
- 29:00Speaker 6: If we don't use the land that we have in
- 29:01Speaker 6: the most productive ways, we're not doing our jobs.
- 29:04Speaker 8: It's great you guys, Thank you so much. Can't wait
- 29:07Speaker 8: to come up. We'll do the show live from Altare.
- 29:09Speaker 7: We'll let us know how well we'll they'll be out
- 29:12Speaker 7: with it. That'll be great, all right.
- 29:13Speaker 6: Thanks guys, We certainly appreciate it. The Appalachian Outlaw Trails.
- 29:17Speaker 6: We'll get you some more information on this throughout the day.
- 29:19Speaker 6: And the phases are amazing. Can you imagine one hundred
- 29:22Speaker 6: thousands eventually let's start though.
- 29:25Speaker 8: And get that Spring twenty twenty six goal. We'll be watching.
- 29:29Speaker 8: Thanks guys, Yeah, we'll.
- 29:30Speaker 4: Be tuned in.
- 29:30Speaker 7: That's Amanda Baron filling in for Dave Allen on date
- 29:33Speaker 7: The Dave Allen Show on five eighty Live, which is

- 29:51Speaker 7: When we come back, we're going to talk to Clinton
- 29:53Speaker 7: and Fire Chief, right Kevin Clinton, and we're going to
- 29:56Speaker 7: get an update about that area near and dear to
- 29:58Speaker 7: my heart, my mom's from the Beaumont area, so that's
- 30:00Speaker 7: right outside of Clinton and across.
- 30:01Speaker 4: The Queen Shultz Bridge.
- 30:02Speaker 7: She was safe this time, but they did a lot
- 30:04Speaker 7: of hard work the last time floods came around.
- 30:06Speaker 4: So I'm looking forward to talk to Chief about this.
- 30:08Speaker 6: Yeah, they always are out there in the community making

- 33:17Speaker 4: It is the fire chief from Clinton and yes Dale.
- 33:20Speaker 6: Thank you so much, Kevin Clinden, and of course is
- 33:23Speaker 6: someone that people known and trusted for so many years
- 33:26Speaker 6: as he helps to keep people safe in Knaw County
- 33:29Speaker 6: and over the weekend he was down south making sure
- 33:33Speaker 6: that people who were in these terrible floodwaters, Kevin were rescued.
- 33:38Speaker 8: Thank you so much for joining us.
- 33:40Speaker 10: Thank you, Amanda.
- 33:41Speaker 6: I know the Clendon and Volunteer Fire Department has a
- 33:43Speaker 6: rich history and that you're so proud to be a
- 33:45Speaker 6: part of it. I do want to let everyone know
- 33:47Speaker 6: that as you and I are talking, Chief Governor Morrisey
- 33:50Speaker 6: just started his news briefing to talk about the flooding
- 33:53Speaker 6: situation as a whole. There were one hundred and thirty
- 33:57Speaker 6: five water rescues that he knows about that you just
- 34:00Speaker 6: mentioned in that news conference, and Kevin, I know you
- 34:04Speaker 6: and your crew were a part of those swift water rescues.
- 34:08Speaker 6: Tell me about the conditions that you experienced.
- 34:11Speaker 10: Well, when we deployed Saturday night, it was about nine
- 34:15Speaker 10: or nine thirty when we got the call and we
- 34:17Speaker 10: got our team on the road by eleven o'clock and
- 34:21Speaker 10: that consisted of the Clinton of Fire Apartment, the Glasgow
- 34:23Speaker 10: Fire Departments, in the West Indian National Guard, and we
- 34:27Speaker 10: linked up with Ripley in South Charleston and then I
- 34:31Speaker 10: know Charleston units down there too. So we didn't get
- 34:35Speaker 10: down into mcdowll and Mingo County till about midnight.
- 34:40Speaker 8: And what did you see when you got there, Chief, Well.
- 34:43Speaker 10: The water was a lot of roads were blocked. You know,
- 34:46Speaker 10: we tried to go to like the town of Oceania,
- 34:49Speaker 10: and we met up with d NR units over there.
- 34:52Speaker 10: The roads were impassable, so we made contacts to check
- 34:57Speaker 10: on some local residents that just need a welfare check,
- 35:00Speaker 10: and then we pulled back to Jesse, West Virginia and
- 35:06Speaker 10: the states the units there until the sun came up
- 35:09Speaker 10: on Sunday morning.
- 35:10Speaker 8: Wow, how grateful were people when you shut up their door?
- 35:14Speaker 10: Oh, they were grateful. They had a heart impacted area.
- 35:17Speaker 10: You know, I've been to a lot of floods in
- 35:19Speaker 10: my career and that were heart impact and a lot
- 35:23Speaker 10: of people were just trying to figure out how to
- 35:25Speaker 10: get around because there were so many roads that were
- 35:27Speaker 10: closed by water and mud slides and just different things.
- 35:32Speaker 10: So there was a lot of rerouting going on. And
- 35:36Speaker 10: we also linked up with the Western State Police in
- 35:38Speaker 10: the area and they guided us on most of our
- 35:42Speaker 10: travels from town to town on how to get there.
- 35:45Speaker 6: Mcdown County had over four inches of rain in twenty
- 35:48Speaker 6: four hours, and when you think about the topography there,
- 35:51Speaker 6: what does that put that in perspective for folks who
- 35:54Speaker 6: may not understand.
- 35:55Speaker 8: What that kind of rain and that amount of time
- 35:57Speaker 8: means there.
- 35:58Speaker 10: Yeah, so the terrain is real steep. You know. We
- 36:01Speaker 10: went to town of Welt and went the first place we
- 36:03Speaker 10: went was over to the hospital and they had taken
- 36:06Speaker 10: a big hit the night before, and actually about one am,
- 36:11Speaker 10: the seventh boat seven crew made a rescue over out
- 36:14Speaker 10: of the hospital's parking lot and they had some a
- 36:17Speaker 10: couple of folks that had been on a car top
- 36:19Speaker 10: across the street. If anybody is familiar where the railroad
- 36:23Speaker 10: tracks was, so they had to put their boat in
- 36:25Speaker 10: go over and do a rescue there. And that was
- 36:30Speaker 10: the first rescue that we did when we got into
- 36:33Speaker 10: the area. So we got them back out and we
- 36:35Speaker 10: went back to the hospital on Sunday morning and it
- 36:38Speaker 10: had washed some animaltons down to the bomber jankare and
- 36:41Speaker 10: people were just trying to get a sight on the damage.
- 36:46Speaker 10: And you know, we linked up with the fire chief
- 36:49Speaker 10: and the Marqui manager there at mcdoale County and they
- 36:52Speaker 10: got us surround by going some back streets and over
- 36:56Speaker 10: the hill because the main thoroughfore was all blocked.
- 36:59Speaker 6: What do you think about the forty nine feet foot
- 37:01Speaker 6: crest of the Tug River. It's the second highest ever,
- 37:05Speaker 6: I believe it's what our meteorologist, Brian Hughes said a
- 37:07Speaker 6: little bit ago, and the governor's talking about this right now.
- 37:10Speaker 6: It's incredible. And the tragedy that we heard about the
- 37:14Speaker 6: family that was driving there was a mud slide. They
- 37:16Speaker 6: were pushed into the Tug River and you know, unfortunately
- 37:21Speaker 6: the grandparents passed away. They were both sixty nine years old.
- 37:25Speaker 6: The grandfather was trying to take that two year old
- 37:27Speaker 6: get them to safety. Fortunately, the younger girls that were
- 37:29Speaker 6: in the car, they were able to.
- 37:31Speaker 8: Make it to safety. Your heart's just really got an
- 37:35Speaker 8: ache in so many ways when you come back and
- 37:38Speaker 8: start thinking about what you've experienced.
- 37:41Speaker 10: Yeah. So so our team works some of that, and
- 37:44Speaker 10: we did some interviews of some of my witnesses and
- 37:47Speaker 10: it just it just breaks your heart to listen to
- 37:50Speaker 10: the stories. And you know, so we're doing a wide
- 37:53Speaker 10: area of searches in the town of Wales to try
- 37:56Speaker 10: to next door the p and the terrain is like
- 37:59Speaker 10: it is, and then by the water coming up, it
- 38:04Speaker 10: cuts off the normal path of travel that people are
- 38:08Speaker 10: used to taking and it is awful.
- 38:11Speaker 8: Yeah, there's forty five sorry to interrupt you, Yeah, there's
- 38:14Speaker 8: forty five road closures right there. The governor just said
- 38:17Speaker 8: three of them are major roads achieve. When the flooding
- 38:20Speaker 8: happened back in twenty sixteen, you were on the front
- 38:23Speaker 8: lines of that, so you know what it means when
- 38:26Speaker 8: someone like yourself and your team comes into another community
- 38:29Speaker 8: in the dead of night in adverse conditions. To help.
- 38:34Speaker 6: Put that in perspective for us about well, you didn't
- 38:38Speaker 6: hesitate to go.
- 38:40Speaker 10: No, no, we don't hesitate to go because we've been there,
- 38:42Speaker 10: but most first responders don't hesitate to thing that the
- 38:46Speaker 10: people will have to understand is you hear of all
- 38:49Speaker 10: these teams traveling. Well, we're just forced multipliers to that
- 38:53Speaker 10: local agency. So like the Welsh fire departments, you know,
- 38:56Speaker 10: we link up with them that emergency managers in well
- 38:59Speaker 10: to mcdell County and Mingo County and even Raleigh County.
- 39:04Speaker 10: We're there to help them. So when we go in,
- 39:07Speaker 10: we're not to take over or to do anything but
- 39:11Speaker 10: multiply their capabilities. So to give you put things in perspective,
- 39:16Speaker 10: we were traveling with about thirty five train firefighter, paramedics,
- 39:22Speaker 10: swift water boat operators, and rope technicians. So when we
- 39:26Speaker 10: roll in, we've got eight boats, thirty five folks that
- 39:31Speaker 10: can go to work that are trained and we can
- 39:33Speaker 10: implement their MS system. If they need paramedics, we have
- 39:37Speaker 10: paramedics in the caduat. We also have communications folks from
- 39:40Speaker 10: the National Guard that has radio link communications back to
- 39:44Speaker 10: Tarston to the Joint Operations Center, so we can offer
- 39:49Speaker 10: things that they already have or maybe compromised because of
- 39:52Speaker 10: the storm or the flooding. You know, if they're nine
- 39:56Speaker 10: one one center goes down and that's one of the
- 39:58Speaker 10: first things you ask, center still operational? You know, what's calls?
- 40:03Speaker 10: What bikelogal calls do you have on the nine on
- 40:06Speaker 10: one side that we need to help you clear. So
- 40:09Speaker 10: it could be one of the big questions we always ask.
- 40:12Speaker 10: Are they just inconvenience? Are the people or are they
- 40:16Speaker 10: truly in Paeril Like folks on the cars, they've got
- 40:18Speaker 10: to be rescued, you know, you've got to go to
- 40:20Speaker 10: work on those. But maybe there's an other area that
- 40:23Speaker 10: we just need to check to make sure where people
- 40:25Speaker 10: is not trapped in a house or somebody doesn't have
- 40:27Speaker 10: a medical problem, you know. And the other thing that
- 40:30Speaker 10: we bring to the table is we can link up
- 40:32Speaker 10: with the aircraft and the National Guard or even the
- 40:36Speaker 10: medical helicopters. You know, if you have the weather, the
- 40:39Speaker 10: weather with the challenge down there, I'll tell you on Sunday,
- 40:43Speaker 10: we tried to get some some aircraft support and we
- 40:46Speaker 10: couldn't get a Sunday to the front moved out. And
- 40:49Speaker 10: that's typical with any flood, when the flood, you know,
- 40:53Speaker 10: when the front moves in, the weather moves in, your
- 40:55Speaker 10: aircraft are ground. That's for the first operational period, which
- 40:58Speaker 10: is only about twelve hours. I've seen that time and
- 41:01Speaker 10: time again. So you're left up to what you got
- 41:03Speaker 10: on the ground to make it until we can get
- 41:06Speaker 10: aircraft in the air and get all these established and
- 41:08Speaker 10: start moving people that.
- 41:10Speaker 8: Need moves well on the ground and in the air.
- 41:12Speaker 6: We're just so grateful for people like you who step
- 41:14Speaker 6: up and your teams and all the people that you mentioned.
- 41:17Speaker 6: Chief Kevin Clindennon with the Clendennon Volunteer Fire Department, thank
- 41:20Speaker 6: you for your time and thank you for what you do.
- 41:22Speaker 8: We appreciate it.
- 41:23Speaker 10: Okay, thank you man.
- 41:24Speaker 8: Have a great day.
- 41:26Speaker 7: We appreciate that from Chief Lindon. And what a heart
- 41:30Speaker 7: tugging story and what courage that these folks have to
- 41:33Speaker 7: have to put up through every day to these saving
- 41:36Speaker 7: lives and everything else.
- 41:37Speaker 6: It's just an incredible story and processing that the days
- 41:39Speaker 6: later is not easy.
- 41:40Speaker 4: Yeah, it's very hard.
- 41:41Speaker 7: That we appreciate the chief coming when the Air with

- 47:24Speaker 23: Tell me about it exactly if you remember the old
- 47:28Speaker 23: what was it called the city had the taste of Charleston,
