- 0:11Speaker 1: And what's up, y'all, And welcome to another episode of
- 0:14Speaker 1: this podcast that we still don't exactly have a name
- 0:17Speaker 1: for yet. It's a combination of two of your favorite shows,
- 0:23Speaker 1: combination Comics Are Dope, Comics Are Coped, and we're talking
- 0:28Speaker 1: about our favorite.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Comic books of the month.
- 0:32Speaker 1: In this case, that would be August twenty twenty five.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I hope everybody out there is doing great, living their
- 0:39Speaker 1: lives to the fullest. I know, it's been a crazy time.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I mean, my man BJ has been going through it himself,
- 0:45Speaker 1: you know, straight up and down. But we're here to
- 0:48Speaker 1: talk about some comic books today, for sure.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:51Speaker 4: I didn't even read a ton of comics this month.
- 0:54Speaker 4: I got halfway through the month and like my computers
- 0:56Speaker 4: started acting up. I was like, I just kind of
- 0:58Speaker 4: stopped everything to get this fundraiser thing going so we
- 1:02Speaker 4: can just like replace some equipment around here.
- 1:04Speaker 2: It's overdue, yep. And you've been even selling a lot
- 1:07Speaker 2: of your comics I saw.
- 1:08Speaker 4: So yeah, yeah, so put a bunch of stuff up
- 1:11Speaker 4: for sale because like you know what, it can sit
- 1:14Speaker 4: here and look pretty, or it can buy me a computer.
- 1:16Speaker 2: So there it is.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Well, you know, if you haven't heard already, made sure
- 1:20Speaker 1: you head over to Comics Are Dope, make sure you
- 1:23Speaker 1: hit the follow, the subscribe all that good shit on
- 1:26Speaker 1: that channel over there. Please make sure you do that,
- 1:29Speaker 1: and make sure you support my man's because you know,
- 1:31Speaker 1: like I said, he'd been going through it and he
- 1:33Speaker 1: brings you, you know, really incredible comic book content every
- 1:38Speaker 1: week pretty much, damn there every day. There is too
- 1:41Speaker 1: many videos already up there, so you know, if you
- 1:44Speaker 1: don't know about it now you do, make sure you
- 1:46Speaker 1: hit the follow and subscribe on it, and you know
- 1:49Speaker 1: we'll get back to these comics much appreciate it, of course, brother,
- 1:53Speaker 1: you know how we do. So what do you have
- 1:55Speaker 1: up first for? You know, our top comic books of August?
- 1:59Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 2:00Speaker 4: Yeah, So you know, last month we had a lot
- 2:02Speaker 4: of fun talking about Marvel Knights the World to Come.
- 2:04Speaker 4: So I thought I'd bring back another Christopher Priest's book,
- 2:08Speaker 4: brand new series debut. This is Sonya Reborn is one,
- 2:15Speaker 4: all right, Christopher Priest and Alisandro Miracolo. MM. Now you know,
- 2:21Speaker 4: I generally stay away from Red Sonya, like the the
- 2:25Speaker 4: double Dutch you have to play to get a Red
- 2:27Speaker 4: Sonya cover. That's not just a complete thirst trap. It's crazy.
- 2:32Speaker 4: So it's like I generally avoid that title, but the
- 2:37Speaker 4: premise of this one is this British lady basically wakes
- 2:42Speaker 4: up in the body of Red Sonya during the Hyborian Age,
- 2:47Speaker 4: and you know, she has like her little squire dude
- 2:50Speaker 4: who's like a little sidekick on these missions, and the
- 2:54Speaker 4: whole time she's like she has her consciousness, not Sonya's,
- 2:58Speaker 4: and so she's like trying to like, what are we doing? Uh,
- 3:02Speaker 4: she's she's uh, she finds she wakes up like in
- 3:05Speaker 4: like a pool of bodies and it's like, yo, we
- 3:07Speaker 4: got to get out of here. And the dude's like, no,
- 3:10Speaker 4: you did that, like you know. So it's just it's
- 3:13Speaker 4: a really fun like primer on what sword and sorcery
- 3:17Speaker 4: can be because I've not read a ton of sword
- 3:20Speaker 4: and sorcery.
- 3:21Speaker 3: It was really cool.
- 3:23Speaker 4: But before she even gets into Red Sonya's body, we're
- 3:28Speaker 4: introduced to her as like this sort of I don't
- 3:30Speaker 4: know if she's an accountant, a secretary, something like buttoned
- 3:34Speaker 4: up desk job. English lady's kind of like at her
- 3:38Speaker 4: wits end. Her marriage is failing, her husband like you know,
- 3:42Speaker 4: stepped out on her or whatever, and she's got this
- 3:44Speaker 4: idea she's gonna like go and kill his mistress.
- 3:48Speaker 2: And so wait, as a regular ask clerk, Yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Like she's like like she got off work, and it's
- 3:54Speaker 4: just kind of like all right, blah blah blah by
- 3:57Speaker 4: this lady now, but you could tell she out of
- 4:00Speaker 4: her element. And so I don't know if it was
- 4:03Speaker 4: like she was going to kill the lady that lady
- 4:04Speaker 4: was gonna kill her, but either way, there's like a chase.
- 4:08Speaker 4: It gets out of hand and she like falls in
- 4:11Speaker 4: like a subway like rail or falls on the subway,
- 4:17Speaker 4: and so when she falls onto the tracks, she like
- 4:20Speaker 4: I guess, knocks herself out cold and wakes up as
- 4:22Speaker 4: red Sonya. And so the rest of the issue is
- 4:26Speaker 4: all the high jinks of this proper English lady waking
- 4:29Speaker 4: up in a chain mail bikini and all that. But
- 4:32Speaker 4: I felt like what was just as interesting was everything
- 4:36Speaker 4: that led her to that moment, Like because when you're
- 4:39Speaker 4: reading this synopsis just thinking it's like okay, cool, proper
- 4:41Speaker 4: English lady is read Sonya, and it's like, well, no,
- 4:44Speaker 4: this lady has like a mean streak of her own somehow,
- 4:49Speaker 4: and obviously she's gonna get brought back to it, so
- 4:51Speaker 4: where she didn't necessarily have the guts to go all
- 4:55Speaker 4: the way with her husband's mistress. You know, it's like
- 4:58Speaker 4: you have to find out real quick if she's gonna
- 5:01Speaker 4: survive with lizard people and stuff chasing after her.
- 5:04Speaker 1: So I like, and also the question of what happened
- 5:09Speaker 1: to red Sonya's consciousness.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Right right, and we don't know that as of yet.
- 5:15Speaker 4: There's no mention of red Sonia's consciousness mm hmm.
- 5:19Speaker 1: And by the end of the issue, does the squire
- 5:22Speaker 1: figure it out?
- 5:23Speaker 4: No, the Squire does not know what's going on. The
- 5:27Speaker 4: squire is just like, uh, you know, like the sort
- 5:31Speaker 4: of tone is just like okay, Like every time that
- 5:34Speaker 4: dude talks, just like yo, like what is wrong with you? Like, yes,
- 5:38Speaker 4: we're going into battle, Yes, go pick up your sword,
- 5:41Speaker 4: like screaming these people are gonna kill you. And so
- 5:46Speaker 4: that's kind of his tone the whole time. But he's
- 5:50Speaker 4: the one basically teaching us how this whole sword and
- 5:53Speaker 4: sorcery thing works.
- 5:54Speaker 3: So but in a very like annoyed tone.
- 5:58Speaker 2: M m all right, So it doesn't sound like as
- 6:02Speaker 2: obviously as wild as.
- 6:03Speaker 1: The world to Come was, if you you know, didn't
- 6:05Speaker 1: hear us talking about that last month. Make sure you
- 6:07Speaker 1: go and check that out as well.
- 6:09Speaker 4: But there's no racial hijinks to be had, and I
- 6:14Speaker 4: think you know to that point. You know, Priest has
- 6:18Speaker 4: always talked about how he doesn't want to be like limited,
- 6:21Speaker 4: you know, to like just giving black characters or whatever.
- 6:26Speaker 4: I got stories like just let me tell the stories,
- 6:28Speaker 4: and this is one of those, like there's a controversity.
- 6:31Speaker 3: To be had.
- 6:32Speaker 4: There's no like, oh Man red Song, he's a black
- 6:34Speaker 4: girl now, right, Like it's none of that. It's just
- 6:38Speaker 4: a really fun and funny comic book, right.
- 6:43Speaker 2: All right?
- 6:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I yeah, just like you, I've read like sparingly
- 6:48Speaker 1: Conan and whatnot throughout the ages. I know Titan has
- 6:53Speaker 1: a line of Conan comic trying now looks like Dynamite
- 6:57Speaker 1: as well. But yeah, I'm just I'm a Sword of
- 7:01Speaker 1: Sorcery fan, you know, Dungeons and Dragons, grew up on
- 7:04Speaker 1: all of that. Of course, I don't know. I just
- 7:06Speaker 1: never got that deep into Conan, you know. It's one
- 7:09Speaker 1: of those things I read the Wikipedia of more than
- 7:11Speaker 1: I ever read any comic books or any of that,
- 7:14Speaker 1: or even novels anything from it.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Funny enough, while we are on this call, I am
- 7:18Speaker 4: exporting a deep dive into Conan comics because, like you,
- 7:22Speaker 4: I've not read much of it at all. Titan sent
- 7:25Speaker 4: me a bunch and so I went read the Wikipedia page,
- 7:28Speaker 4: then read a bunch of these comics, and it's just like,
- 7:31Speaker 4: all right, cool, here's all the Conan you missed in
- 7:34Speaker 4: the last almost hundred years. Definitely interesting stuff, but it's
- 7:39Speaker 4: like some of it's so glorious. Yes, I got preschoolers
- 7:43Speaker 4: so again.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I once read a Conan book way back when I
- 7:47Speaker 1: was a kid, and I'm in a comic and this
- 7:50Speaker 1: dude got his tongue cut out, and I was just like,
- 7:53Speaker 1: all right, this is not for.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Me, you know.
- 7:54Speaker 1: As a kid, it was like nope, nope, you know,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and that image just haunted me all my life ever
- 7:59Speaker 1: since then. And that's one of those things. So I
- 8:01Speaker 1: was like, nah, I'm not reading this. So I never
- 8:03Speaker 1: read that much.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Ponin got you, all right, So what'd you read? First? Up?
- 8:08Speaker 1: I read this series just recently finished its fourth issue.
- 8:14Speaker 1: It's Los Monstros Monstros, Lost Monstros, Los Monsters not sure
- 8:20Speaker 1: how you pronounced it, The monsters basically and it's a
- 8:24Speaker 1: nineteen fifties I think I would compare it to if
- 8:30Speaker 1: you've seen Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Right, remember how Roger
- 8:33Speaker 1: Rabbit had Tunetown. This is like Monstertown and a Monstertown.
- 8:37Speaker 1: It's filled with all the classic basically, the universal monsters,
- 8:41Speaker 1: the draculas, the vampires, the werewolves, the creature from the
- 8:46Speaker 1: Black Lagoons, the mummies, all those type of you know,
- 8:50Speaker 1: creatures and monsters live in this monster town. And the
- 8:54Speaker 1: story follows a detective because it's a classic noir, you know,
- 8:58Speaker 1: nineteen fifties detective shoe story where this dude is out
- 9:03Speaker 1: trying to find what happened to you know, a damnseul
- 9:07Speaker 1: in distress basically. And I really enjoyed the first four
- 9:11Speaker 1: issues because, you know, set up this world very well.
- 9:13Speaker 1: The art is really dope, and it just that classic,
- 9:18Speaker 1: you know, like I said, Who Framed Roger Rabbit type tale.
- 9:22Speaker 1: And it all wraps up by the fourth issue. It
- 9:24Speaker 1: seems like there's going to be more from the story.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I hope there's more from it, but I just really
- 9:29Speaker 1: enjoyed it as a real kind of a throwback type story.
- 9:32Speaker 2: But I got to just really shout out the art man.
- 9:36Speaker 1: The art by Jesus Marino was just really beautiful, really
- 9:41Speaker 1: detailed line art, and really expressive in all the characters.
- 9:45Speaker 1: It just gives you that nineteen fifties feel but also
- 9:50Speaker 1: gets the look and feel of all those.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Classic Universal Monsters. So really enjoyed it.
- 9:57Speaker 1: I've read all four issues to catch up, actually, because
- 10:00Speaker 1: I read the first issue in the first drop, and
- 10:02Speaker 1: then I kind of missed the last two, and then
- 10:05Speaker 1: four came out in August, so I caught up on
- 10:07Speaker 1: that and really enjoyed it.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Really dope serious, gotcha?
- 10:11Speaker 4: So are you a big Universal Monsters fan, because I
- 10:13Speaker 4: know they've got like the is it? I think it's
- 10:16Speaker 4: Boom has been printing a bunch of like Universal Monsters
- 10:19Speaker 4: short stories as of late.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Nah, not especially that it's just like way before my time.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I remember what was it, the Invisible Man reboot from
- 10:34Speaker 1: a few years ago, because they've been trying to get
- 10:36Speaker 1: that Dark Universe joint off the ground from forever and
- 10:41Speaker 1: that Invisible Man reboot that was horrifye that was definitely horrifying.
- 10:46Speaker 1: I stipped that Wolfman joint that this came out. I'm
- 10:49Speaker 1: usually a big werewolf fan in general. That's like more
- 10:52Speaker 1: of my joints where wolves, but like my vampire stuff
- 10:55Speaker 1: is Lost Boys, you know what I mean. That's like
- 10:57Speaker 1: my Pinnacle of Vampire and now Centers Centers and Lost
- 11:01Speaker 1: Boys on my two peak vampire experiences in life. And
- 11:05Speaker 1: now all that Bella you know, Laguzzy or I don't
- 11:09Speaker 1: even mispronounced my name man's name, but yeah, now that's
- 11:12Speaker 1: way before me, no gotcha?
- 11:15Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, Well that that's low monstrous. Yeah, first story
- 11:20Speaker 3: arc just wrapped up. That's dope.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Yeah James Robinson. Oh, I didn't even realize it was
- 11:24Speaker 1: about James Robinson. Honestly, I was more loving the art
- 11:27Speaker 1: than even peeping up who wrote it. But yeah, James
- 11:29Speaker 1: Robinson wrote it. Very dope, So yes, they get more.
- 11:32Speaker 1: You know that man sells books, so right, yeah dope. Okay,
- 11:37Speaker 1: So my next one series been on going for a minute.
- 11:41Speaker 1: This is Joshua Williamson's Superman Issue twenty nine came out
- 11:46Speaker 1: last month and josh Williamson and Dan Mora. The colorist
- 11:52Speaker 1: is Alejandro Sanchez.
- 11:53Speaker 4: So if you read Absolute Power, it's that same art team.
- 11:59Speaker 4: Absolute Power was the big event last summer where Amanda
- 12:03Speaker 4: Waller tried to steal everybody's powers.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Oh okay, I did read a couple of issues that yeah.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Yeah, that basically kind of led us to the All
- 12:13Speaker 4: In Special.
- 12:15Speaker 3: You know, where dark Side tried to come back.
- 12:17Speaker 4: They kind of like knocked him back for the time being,
- 12:20Speaker 4: and they're kind of in a holding pattern, like they
- 12:22Speaker 4: set up a new Justice League watch Tower and all
- 12:24Speaker 4: this stuff.
- 12:25Speaker 3: So that's kind of the state of the DC universe
- 12:27Speaker 3: right now.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Yea.
- 12:28Speaker 4: And so in the publishing initiative, it's been called all
- 12:30Speaker 4: in since what October last year, so or just about
- 12:34Speaker 4: a year into that status quo.
- 12:37Speaker 3: And to be honest, it's felt like you could kind
- 12:39Speaker 3: of read.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Whatever you want or none of it and be okay,
- 12:43Speaker 4: because they did Absolute Universe stuff as well. So for me,
- 12:47Speaker 4: the DC universe has kind of been like Men, depending
- 12:50Speaker 4: on who you're a fan of, and but in Superman,
- 12:55Speaker 4: Superman is like they're gearing up to tell whatever the
- 12:58Speaker 4: next chapter of this absolute universe story is. Because if
- 13:01Speaker 4: you read the All In Special, basically it's teased that well,
- 13:07Speaker 4: it's established that there are these two universes. There's the
- 13:10Speaker 4: regular DC universe that's powered by Hope, and then there's
- 13:14Speaker 4: this alternate DC universe that is ruled by dark Side
- 13:18Speaker 4: and sort of driven by like that sort of fear.
- 13:21Speaker 4: So that's where Absolute Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, all of them,
- 13:24Speaker 4: they live in that universe. And you get this idea
- 13:29Speaker 4: that eventually those two universes are going to collide, I
- 13:32Speaker 4: mean course, right, and so now it seems like in
- 13:36Speaker 4: the pages of Superman, we're gearing up for that collision.
- 13:40Speaker 1: So all right, I'll just have one question there, because
- 13:43Speaker 1: DC has always had the multiverse, right, yeah, and so
- 13:47Speaker 1: what happened to Like isn't there a metal universe or something?
- 13:50Speaker 4: And yeah, so that part I'm I'm a little bit
- 13:53Speaker 4: lost on. Yeah, I think, like the comic bookie explanation is,
- 13:58Speaker 4: somehow when dark Side came back this last time and
- 14:02Speaker 4: they however they dealt with him, it basically collapsed the
- 14:07Speaker 4: multiverse exception of this.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Good one and bad one.
- 14:11Speaker 1: And that's okay, yeah, because this is a bit side.
- 14:15Speaker 1: But I've been reading the DC History, the New I'm
- 14:20Speaker 1: not sure the name of it, but it's a new
- 14:21Speaker 1: series of DC's putting out. I think Darwin Cook is
- 14:25Speaker 1: doing it where it's like the New History of the
- 14:28Speaker 1: DC universe and it basically is saying that because there's
- 14:31Speaker 1: no more Earth too or any.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Of that type stuff.
- 14:33Speaker 1: It's like the Justice Society was on the same Earth
- 14:35Speaker 1: or right, yeah, et cetera.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Okay, cool, So yeah, so all of that.
- 14:41Speaker 4: There's been so much happening in the DC universe, but
- 14:43Speaker 4: it's like, I feel like there hasn't been a unifying
- 14:46Speaker 4: book to stay on top of just the universe as
- 14:49Speaker 4: a whole.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:50Speaker 4: But in Superman, basically at the end of the All
- 14:54Speaker 4: In Special, we got this tease of the other side
- 14:58Speaker 4: of the universe and Booster Gold our link between the
- 15:01Speaker 4: two universes, so why not and right, and so he
- 15:06Speaker 4: gets stuck in the dark absolute universe no, with a
- 15:12Speaker 4: legion of superheroes that has been influenced.
- 15:15Speaker 3: By Dark Side.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Okay, so like in this absolute universe, it's Dark Sides Legion,
- 15:23Speaker 4: and now Dark sized Legion has just popped up in
- 15:26Speaker 4: our universe in the pages of Superman.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Oh okay, okay, so.
- 15:31Speaker 4: An issue twenty eight, which it has been. If you've
- 15:33Speaker 4: been reading the whole summer of Superman stuff, it's been
- 15:36Speaker 4: really good. That's probably what I'd say you need to
- 15:39Speaker 4: read to understand the DC universe right now. Yeah, since let's.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Say issue twenty five.
- 15:45Speaker 4: But basically they've established that, you know, Superman knows that
- 15:49Speaker 4: the world is gonna be okay because he can travel
- 15:53Speaker 4: back and forth to the future and see the Legion
- 15:54Speaker 4: of Superheroes and they've been inspired by him, and their
- 15:57Speaker 4: society is so much better in all this right in
- 15:59Speaker 4: the far future. So when Saturn Girl pops up at
- 16:03Speaker 4: Metropolis and is evil, then it's like, okay, well, at
- 16:07Speaker 4: what point in history did the world become this because
- 16:10Speaker 4: right now everything's bright and cheerful in Metropolis. So last
- 16:15Speaker 4: issue we got a surprise appearance from Superboy Prime. After
- 16:21Speaker 4: we got this dark appearance of the Legion Superheroes, Superboy
- 16:27Speaker 4: Prime shows up and it's like, hey guys, it's me,
- 16:30Speaker 4: DC's Deadpool.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Let's go on an adventure.
- 16:33Speaker 4: And so in issue twenty nine, it's basically like you're
- 16:39Speaker 4: getting the origin of Superboy Prime, well him retelling his
- 16:43Speaker 4: origin and then trying to fight alongside Superman against this
- 16:49Speaker 4: like to prevent whatever this dark future is from happening,
- 16:54Speaker 4: and so all of it is clearly going to lead
- 16:56Speaker 4: up to whatever this new event is. I think they've
- 16:59Speaker 4: got a an absolute villainy one shot something like that.
- 17:03Speaker 4: I can't remember what it's called, but absolutely bad people.
- 17:06Speaker 4: It's coming out. It's on FOC this weekend, right, so
- 17:12Speaker 4: that that's coming, but basically out. The point is just
- 17:16Speaker 4: it's exciting. It feels like an event. When Dan Laura
- 17:20Speaker 4: Dan Morra is, I don't know, they got him like
- 17:22Speaker 4: locked in the basement somewhere because he's drawn like everything
- 17:25Speaker 4: and like doing covers on everything.
- 17:27Speaker 3: But they'll put him.
- 17:29Speaker 4: They'll usually put him with like Tamra band Villain or
- 17:31Speaker 4: like some other colorists who has like really bright palettes.
- 17:35Speaker 4: When they put him with Alejandro Sanchez, it just feels
- 17:38Speaker 4: a lot more epic. It feels grim like there's higher stakes,
- 17:43Speaker 4: and that's that's where we are in this book. So
- 17:45Speaker 4: I'm enjoying Superman right now. And yeah, usually I'm a
- 17:49Speaker 4: Batman fan, but this one's got it.
- 17:52Speaker 2: M Josh, they did Birthright right, that was that was
- 17:57Speaker 2: their first intro.
- 17:58Speaker 1: I interviewed them back then. Oh, I'm Birthright's one of
- 18:01Speaker 1: my favorite comics. Image and I've always loved Josh and
- 18:04Speaker 1: they're writing they did a flash run right now, they
- 18:07Speaker 1: got Superman popping, so all right, you know that's good
- 18:10Speaker 1: to hear that, you know, they got it together. I
- 18:14Speaker 1: myself have not cared about most of the absolute uh DC.
- 18:18Speaker 1: I know Absolute wonder Woman is pretty good. I gotta
- 18:21Speaker 1: get back into that. At some point I did not
- 18:25Speaker 1: like Absolute Superman like that. It was like, all right, cool,
- 18:29Speaker 1: you know, and Batman was even just that shit's just
- 18:31Speaker 1: hilarious to me.
- 18:32Speaker 2: That's like so over the top of ridiculous.
- 18:35Speaker 4: And when I'm still following, yeah Superman and wonder Woman,
- 18:39Speaker 4: Batman I'm enjoying, and the other two I wasn't even
- 18:44Speaker 4: like not enjoying. I just felt so far behind. I
- 18:46Speaker 4: was like, doesn't make sense to keep buying these.
- 18:48Speaker 1: I want to get back into the Martian Manhunter one
- 18:50Speaker 1: because I really enjoyed the first issue of that, and
- 18:52Speaker 1: it was the kind of weirdness that I like Green
- 18:55Speaker 1: Lantern that did nothing for me in the first issue.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Sorry, you know that's my man's but yeah, just didn't hit.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Yeah, but you know, I'll probably check out some of
- 19:05Speaker 1: this crossover whenever it drops. Superboy Prime is one of
- 19:08Speaker 1: those characters like I've read him back when what was
- 19:12Speaker 1: that countdown and all that stuff? You know, that was
- 19:15Speaker 1: like my prime DC riot, I mean reading years and yeah,
- 19:20Speaker 1: Superboy Prime was hilarious to me when he first came
- 19:23Speaker 1: out and how he was just murdering people left him
- 19:25Speaker 1: right and just complaining about everything. So the tracks that
- 19:28Speaker 1: he would want to fight a dark version of the
- 19:31Speaker 1: DC universe.
- 19:32Speaker 2: That definitely tracks because he hates.
- 19:34Speaker 1: All that darkness, even though he simplifies all that darkness,
- 19:38Speaker 1: which is the hilarious part of it.
- 19:40Speaker 4: Right, right, So, I think the first time I read
- 19:43Speaker 4: Superboy Prime it was during death Metal, like this special
- 19:50Speaker 4: one shot where he was basically coping with the fact
- 19:54Speaker 4: that he didn't exist anymore but was forgotten or something.
- 20:00Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 20:00Speaker 4: I remember it like having a way more heart than
- 20:02Speaker 4: it should have, but hit for me the same because
- 20:04Speaker 4: I didn't read all the stuffing that came before.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, no, the stuff that came before was trying
- 20:10Speaker 1: of like really over the top. Like when super Boy
- 20:13Speaker 1: Prime was first introduced, he was like so over the top,
- 20:15Speaker 1: and he had this armor and he was straight I mean,
- 20:18Speaker 1: he straight up flies.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Through this character.
- 20:20Speaker 1: It was a random DC character, but straight of flies
- 20:23Speaker 1: through them, murders people left and right. I mean, all
- 20:27Speaker 1: these people that didn't murder him. You know, it's like
- 20:29Speaker 1: he's tearing one person apart and shooting another person with
- 20:31Speaker 1: this heat beans he was just cleaning out DC's closet.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Basically got you. Yeah, every Rando in the world.
- 20:39Speaker 1: All right, we'll come back to Superman in a second,
- 20:42Speaker 1: but I want to jump ship for a second to
- 20:46Speaker 1: probably what is my favorite book this month, and that
- 20:49Speaker 1: is or Lie O r l A.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Because I honestly thought it was o lie for.
- 20:55Speaker 3: The for the local Hip Hop Lyrics Archives.
- 20:58Speaker 1: No, no, no, this is Orla oh or La from
- 21:05Speaker 1: Mad Cave Studios author John Leees, illustrated by Sally can
- 21:11Speaker 1: Train Can Tarano. I hope I didn't butcher that, but
- 21:14Speaker 1: I probably did. Colors Deborah Kelly and Letterer, Lucas Gattoni,
- 21:20Speaker 1: and I probably butchered all of that. But basically, Oilerbard
- 21:24Speaker 1: is the main character. She's a young woman, an antique restorer,
- 21:29Speaker 1: romance novel enjoyer and keen birder you know what I mean.
- 21:32Speaker 1: She is a straight nerd, you know, just living her life,
- 21:35Speaker 1: but you know, enjoying what she enjoys. And she has
- 21:40Speaker 1: a secret. You know, she's like searching for true love,
- 21:44Speaker 1: you know, going out on dates and all this stuff
- 21:46Speaker 1: can't find it, you know, obviously the romance novelists.
- 21:49Speaker 2: You know, the woman who works and antiques, you know.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Kind of quirky, all that type of stuff and attracts
- 21:56Speaker 1: a lot of bum ass ninja's, you know, basically sadly,
- 22:01Speaker 1: as most women do, because there's a lot of bum.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Ass ninjes in the world.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Yes, sad to say, you know, truth, he told, you know,
- 22:07Speaker 1: one of my favorite sayings.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Men are trash.
- 22:10Speaker 3: So she's the main main character in the Tyler Perry movie,
- 22:12Speaker 3: got it.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Yeah, But this is like the ultimate twist of a
- 22:17Speaker 1: Tyler Perry movie, because you know, Tyler Perry would have
- 22:21Speaker 1: this twist. We flipped because the twist is Orla has
- 22:25Speaker 1: a monster inside her that she calls the Ick, and
- 22:28Speaker 1: the it comes out whenever a bum ass ninja becomes
- 22:32Speaker 1: a bum ass ninja, basically whenever a man goes too far,
- 22:37Speaker 1: out comes the Ick and it is a giant, horrible
- 22:40Speaker 1: monster that easily devours human beings. And so it's usually
- 22:46Speaker 1: the quick end of her dates. As you know, they
- 22:49Speaker 1: don't go too well well, yes, like I said, great
- 22:56Speaker 1: fantastic set up in the first issue. And then the
- 22:59Speaker 1: bid twist is that in the By the end of
- 23:02Speaker 1: the first issue, after we've seen you know, the it
- 23:05Speaker 1: come out and deal with a dude who definitely deserved it,
- 23:08Speaker 1: she meets a young man who she actually starts liking
- 23:11Speaker 1: and really feeling. And he asked her to question, huh
- 23:15Speaker 1: so Boris Kojo No, yes, Boris Cocho asked her to
- 23:21Speaker 1: go out on a date. And that's the end of
- 23:23Speaker 1: the first issue. With the ick lurking in the background.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Will he be Boris or will he be.
- 23:32Speaker 2: The practice the one.
- 23:33Speaker 1: The lights dude who cut his dreads, who got them
- 23:35Speaker 1: green eyes? He usually plays a monstrous dude too. Okay, yeah, yep.
- 23:41Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm always down for comics through the Lands of
- 23:50Speaker 4: Tyler Perry.
- 23:52Speaker 1: But like I said, if it was Tyler Perry, the
- 23:54Speaker 1: woman would get eight for doing anything that's true, you
- 23:57Speaker 1: know what I mean.
- 23:57Speaker 3: They would wait till issue five.
- 24:00Speaker 1: They would have made her suffer first, of course, you know,
- 24:03Speaker 1: ten terrible days, and then she gets eight by a dude.
- 24:06Speaker 4: And then just the last page is just and she
- 24:08Speaker 4: died a slow and miserable death.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Yeah, and I should have gone to church, she screams,
- 24:13Speaker 2: and she dies.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Oh God, you only get this here. This is why
- 24:21Speaker 3: you watch us.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Comparison of Oiler to Tier Perry movies is something you're
- 24:26Speaker 1: not going to get anywhere else, that is for sure.
- 24:29Speaker 1: But no, for real, this is one of my favorite
- 24:31Speaker 1: comments of the most. I love a good romance comic.
- 24:33Speaker 1: I famously you know, harped on how damn It? And
- 24:37Speaker 1: I can't remember the name of the book right now.
- 24:39Speaker 1: I'll come back to it in a second, but this
- 24:43Speaker 1: is one of my joints so far. And like I
- 24:45Speaker 1: said last month, if you have a weird title, I'm
- 24:47Speaker 1: gonna check out your number one and Oiler with the
- 24:50Speaker 1: capital exclamation point. I was like, okay, I gotta read this,
- 24:53Speaker 1: and I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed it. So
- 24:57Speaker 1: I'll be back. And you know, I'm not gonna try
- 24:59Speaker 1: and talk about the same book month after month, but
- 25:01Speaker 1: I'm definitely going to at least give this a mention
- 25:04Speaker 1: next month because I want people to read this and
- 25:05Speaker 1: check it out. So Orla from Mad Cave Studios a
- 25:10Speaker 1: boy girl on her hungry.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Monster the same What a sad line, right? Okay?
- 25:18Speaker 4: So should we talk about the book we both read
- 25:20Speaker 4: now or why not? Yeah, let's do it all right?
- 25:24Speaker 4: So I read Ancestral Recall Issue one. This is written
- 25:28Speaker 4: by Jordan Clark with or by Attagoon ilhn mm hm.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Both of these names. These both of these gentlemen were
- 25:37Speaker 4: a member or members of the Milestone Initiative Talent Development
- 25:41Speaker 4: program that uh Is Colon and Reggie Huglin put on.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Nice, So that's where they met.
- 25:49Speaker 4: This is their creator own title from a Hooy Comics,
- 25:53Speaker 4: and it's basically about this dude who is a painter,
- 25:56Speaker 4: like a world renowned painter, and who's he's married to
- 26:00Speaker 4: this older lady who's basically his manager, and long story short,
- 26:05Speaker 4: she goes missing, and so when he's trying and he's
- 26:09Speaker 4: it's the way it's set is like she's he's kind
- 26:11Speaker 4: of displaced through time and so he's waking up just
- 26:15Speaker 4: like where am I?
- 26:16Speaker 3: What is going on?
- 26:17Speaker 4: Trying to figure it out and get back to his wife,
- 26:20Speaker 4: who's clearly like his grounding force in life. And as
- 26:24Speaker 4: he's trying to make his way back or figure out
- 26:26Speaker 4: what's going on, he keeps find himself in these situations
- 26:29Speaker 4: like fighting different people and stuff like that. But his
- 26:32Speaker 4: power is I guess we'll call it ancestral recall. But
- 26:37Speaker 4: he's basically recalling the strengths and abilities of all these
- 26:41Speaker 4: different figures from black history. And you know, as someone
- 26:46Speaker 4: who studied black history, I was really surprised by the
- 26:50Speaker 4: amount of names that come up in this book that
- 26:53Speaker 4: I had not come across prior to reading this book. Yes,
- 26:58Speaker 4: like there was one as like the first like Black
- 27:01Speaker 4: Private Eye that like basically inspired the entire like film
- 27:06Speaker 4: noir genre.
- 27:07Speaker 2: But I was just talking about in Littlest Monstrous, so
- 27:09Speaker 2: straight up that same yeah, Like and it's like I
- 27:13Speaker 2: didn't even know there was it was a black dude
- 27:14Speaker 2: doing that.
- 27:15Speaker 1: I didn't know the inspired the whole film their yeah genre.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it was like in.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Just so this is all this racism is killing me inside. Lord,
- 27:32Speaker 2: this racism is killing me inside.
- 27:36Speaker 4: Usually right, like a book like this, you know, for
- 27:42Speaker 4: all the talk we're gonna get a like wokeness and
- 27:45Speaker 4: all whatever. Right for me, it's so enlightening, Like and
- 27:50Speaker 4: you know, I interviewed Jordan and he was telling me, like,
- 27:51Speaker 4: you know, some of these figures he knew about, he
- 27:53Speaker 4: learned about in classes or whatever, and some of these
- 27:55Speaker 4: he found just doing research for this book. But the
- 28:00Speaker 4: way like again because he's like he has this power
- 28:03Speaker 4: and they'll just do like a little caption on the
- 28:05Speaker 4: screen like, oh, this comes from that dude. So then
- 28:09Speaker 4: you look it up like an editor's note, the same
- 28:11Speaker 4: way you will look up an editor's note, and you're like, wait,
- 28:14Speaker 4: so the dude that inspired the whole film the war genre,
- 28:18Speaker 4: he's a private eye that used to like record his
- 28:21Speaker 4: tapes and like how he's thinking about cases and stuff
- 28:23Speaker 4: like that, or and he would like give these seminars
- 28:27Speaker 4: and stuff and basically like some white lady just like
- 28:29Speaker 4: wrote it all down and then like sold it the
- 28:32Speaker 4: Netflix based like, and that's how the genre was born.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Like I'm looking at it right now.
- 28:40Speaker 1: It's Samuel Marlow, the first black private eye in Los Angeles,
- 28:44Speaker 1: inspiration for Philip Marlow. And I always know about Philip Marlow,
- 28:47Speaker 1: and I think I might even heard of Samuel Marlow
- 28:50Speaker 1: before this, but I've definitely heard of Philip Marlow.
- 28:53Speaker 2: And oh this phrase system is yeah, yeah, killing me
- 29:01Speaker 2: in son Lord, killing me insad.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Yes, And this is also one of my top four
- 29:09Speaker 1: books in the month. You know, we did not distress
- 29:11Speaker 1: this before we met up to do this recording. We
- 29:14Speaker 1: both always you know, read our books and then decide
- 29:17Speaker 1: and we're both like yo, this book. And I'm actually
- 29:19Speaker 1: happy for that because this is one of those books
- 29:22Speaker 1: that I feel like really needs some love and attention
- 29:25Speaker 1: because it's a creator owned book, it's from two brothers.
- 29:30Speaker 1: And then it also it's like that's the greatness of
- 29:34Speaker 1: like once again blackness, we are not exclusive, you know
- 29:40Speaker 1: what I mean? Because one of my favorite things about
- 29:42Speaker 1: this book is the character Myron Bayjun Byron Jung Myra
- 29:49Speaker 1: Myron Jungi probably a sixteen year old Korean Puerto Rican
- 29:54Speaker 1: young woman who helps out the main character and goes
- 29:57Speaker 1: on this adventure with him to help find his It
- 30:00Speaker 1: seemed white, and it's so dope to see.
- 30:02Speaker 2: A Korean Puerto Rican, you know what I mean.
- 30:04Speaker 1: That's such a great combination, right, and to see that
- 30:07Speaker 1: represented in this book. And I know already just from
- 30:11Speaker 1: how the creators are showing black history that they're going
- 30:16Speaker 1: to get into her history their history.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Just as much, and that's just really dope. Man.
- 30:21Speaker 1: And the art, man, I really want to shout out
- 30:23Speaker 1: the art because it's not that anime feel but also
- 30:28Speaker 1: a very you know, the blackness is there, and then
- 30:32Speaker 1: like the switching of tones for the different eras like
- 30:35Speaker 1: when you go to the black and white film noir
- 30:38Speaker 1: of Samuel Marlow that is fire, and then later on
- 30:42Speaker 1: there's other different ones, and I know we're going to
- 30:44Speaker 1: see all this different variation with the art the colors
- 30:47Speaker 1: of the Fantastic Job as well. Definitely, like Oiler was
- 30:52Speaker 1: my favorite book because of its wildness, but this is
- 30:55Speaker 1: probably my second, or you know, tied with it, because
- 30:58Speaker 1: it's just such a oat book, such a dope concept
- 31:02Speaker 1: and I really really want people to read this.
- 31:06Speaker 2: Support this joint. Who's the publisher of it comics.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Yeah, so please check out this book Ancestral recall. It
- 31:15Speaker 1: also has two dope pieces in the back from two
- 31:18Speaker 1: other creators, Ackerman and Garyoso, and they're like, I guess
- 31:24Speaker 1: you would call them experimental comics because there are a
- 31:27Speaker 1: lot of texts with some images, not like more traditional comics.
- 31:32Speaker 1: But that's always dope when you get so much content,
- 31:36Speaker 1: you know, I love comics like that where you get
- 31:38Speaker 1: like different stories in the back or different types of
- 31:40Speaker 1: stories all that.
- 31:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like a straight up illustrated short story.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Yeah. And there's two of them, yeah.
- 31:48Speaker 4: Which is ironically you get a lot of those in
- 31:50Speaker 4: Konam magazines, But yeah.
- 31:55Speaker 2: I did not notice.
- 31:57Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, Ancestral recall.
- 31:59Speaker 2: No, it was.
- 32:00Speaker 4: It was one of my favorites, and it was like
- 32:01Speaker 4: I had to go back because I didn't realize how
- 32:05Speaker 4: long ago it came out. Issue Too just came out
- 32:07Speaker 4: this week as we're filming this. Nice, so go pick
- 32:10Speaker 4: that up. I read this, you know, back when FOC
- 32:15Speaker 4: had come up, so I didn't realize Issue one had
- 32:17Speaker 4: come and gone. Issue Too was already out. It's going
- 32:20Speaker 4: to be a five issue mini series.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Okay, dope, dope. I wasn't sure how long it was
- 32:25Speaker 1: to go for. Yeah, oh man, I want more than that, right, Yeah,
- 32:30Speaker 1: Like this feels like something that could go, you know,
- 32:32Speaker 1: for a bit longer than just five issues.
- 32:34Speaker 2: For real. This is a strong concept.
- 32:38Speaker 3: You know, I did.
- 32:39Speaker 4: I didn't put Bitter Root on my list this month
- 32:42Speaker 4: because it was the finale and okay, you know it's like, well,
- 32:45Speaker 4: you can't go by it, although the trade is on
- 32:48Speaker 4: FOC this week, so you could go pick it up.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Yeah, well, give that dimension, of course I could.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Yeah, So bitter Roote the next Movement Samford Green, David Walker,
- 32:58Speaker 4: Chuck Brown. Uh, Basically, if you read bitter Root, then
- 33:03Speaker 4: you know, it's like this family of monster hunters and
- 33:05Speaker 4: the monsters are people infected by the state of racism.
- 33:10Speaker 4: And so first volume was fifteen issues long. It's set
- 33:14Speaker 4: during the Harlem Renaissance period, and so it's like, you
- 33:16Speaker 4: got this family from New York and they're traveling like
- 33:19Speaker 4: down south in other areas hunting these monsters. Well, the
- 33:23Speaker 4: next movement basically takes the next generation of this family,
- 33:27Speaker 4: sets them in nineteen sixties Mississippi, and you know, of
- 33:31Speaker 4: course you know what ensues.
- 33:33Speaker 3: So rac racial hygiens. Yeah, that's what we'll call it.
- 33:37Speaker 3: That's what we'll call that.
- 33:38Speaker 4: The first issue as a monster showing up on one
- 33:43Speaker 4: of the freedom rides, like wow, yeah, yeah, I've read
- 33:47Speaker 4: the first issue. Yeah it was. It was amazing, amazing
- 33:51Speaker 4: that series. But the whole five issues has wrapped up
- 33:56Speaker 4: and you can get it if you are looking to
- 33:59Speaker 4: pre order it. It's not just listed as bitter Root
- 34:01Speaker 4: the Next Movement. It's listed as Bitter Root Volume four,
- 34:05Speaker 4: which has me rethinking my choice to sell my original
- 34:07Speaker 4: trade paperbacks because now I'm gonna have this big hardcover
- 34:11Speaker 4: and then a book this as volume four, and it's
- 34:13Speaker 4: gonna bug.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Me all right.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Yeah, so bitter Root the next movement, make sure you
- 34:21Speaker 1: order you know, this trade paperback. If you haven't, you know,
- 34:24Speaker 1: got the rest of you won't have the same agonizing
- 34:27Speaker 1: feeling that BJ is going through right now. But you
- 34:31Speaker 1: know you can definitely get that trade. And yeah, Bitter
- 34:34Speaker 1: Root is always one of my favorite series. Definitely worth
- 34:37Speaker 1: going back and picking up the original trades as well.
- 34:40Speaker 1: I think it's an option for a series or something.
- 34:44Speaker 1: So you know, I want to.
- 34:45Speaker 3: Say Regina King is directing the movie or producing it.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Hey, all right, all right, let's go oh, let's go. Okay.
- 34:53Speaker 1: That's good to hear because you know things that option
- 34:56Speaker 1: and then you don't know if they're gonna make it
- 34:58Speaker 1: all the way. So you know that's some that's some
- 35:00Speaker 1: names behind it. So that's good to hear, right, very
- 35:02Speaker 1: good to hear. I brought that up, My bad.
- 35:05Speaker 4: I brought up Bitter Root because if we're fighting monsters
- 35:08Speaker 4: of racism, it's like you could set that book at
- 35:10Speaker 4: any time and there's going to be racist to depict, right,
- 35:14Speaker 4: and so it's like the next movement's over, the original
- 35:16Speaker 4: one is over. I feel like if we're going to
- 35:19Speaker 4: do a volume three, we got to set it in
- 35:20Speaker 4: like twenty sixteen Charleston or something, but.
- 35:24Speaker 3: You know the uh. But with ancestral recall, it's the
- 35:29Speaker 3: same thing, like.
- 35:30Speaker 4: There is an unlimited number of you know, hidden figures
- 35:34Speaker 4: that we can draw powers from.
- 35:35Speaker 3: Like that series could easily go like thirty issues.
- 35:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and then, like I say, when you add into
- 35:40Speaker 1: other characters, like you know, the Korean Shorty, Korean, Puerto Rican,
- 35:45Speaker 1: you know, if she starts an ancestral recall on herself.
- 35:49Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, man, No, it's a great concept.
- 35:53Speaker 1: I hope. I hope that just just the first four
- 35:56Speaker 1: or five issues whatever, and then we get a sequel
- 35:58Speaker 1: out of it, you know, much like we're better route
- 36:00Speaker 1: because I really want to see more from this book
- 36:03Speaker 1: than just five issues.
- 36:04Speaker 3: Agreed.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Yeah, been really all three of these books are some
- 36:09Speaker 1: of my faves. You know, they're all like tied for
- 36:12Speaker 1: favor of the month. And this one is Superman the
- 36:16Speaker 1: Kryptonite Spectrum. I hope this shiny ass proper is even
- 36:20Speaker 1: showing up on the screen right here. It's from DC's
- 36:24Speaker 1: Black Label, which is DC's way of like they used to.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Have Vertigo and else Worlds.
- 36:31Speaker 1: I think, I don't even think they're doing else Worlds anymore. Right,
- 36:33Speaker 1: it's all black label now.
- 36:35Speaker 4: Well somehow black label else Worlds and Vertigo all exists.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Now.
- 36:42Speaker 3: I had no idea black black label.
- 36:46Speaker 4: The way I understand it is like out of continuity
- 36:49Speaker 4: and mature superhero stories, Verto was still going to be
- 36:53Speaker 4: your weird creator own stuff, okay, characters and concepts, and then.
- 36:59Speaker 3: Whatever else world is more like it's going to be
- 37:02Speaker 3: like you know.
- 37:03Speaker 4: The superheroes, you know, but in crazy situations, and then
- 37:06Speaker 4: they're retro fitting a bunch of other titles to be
- 37:09Speaker 4: else Worlds. So like, uh, Dark Knights of Steel is
- 37:12Speaker 4: considered else Worlds and it was basically like the DC
- 37:15Speaker 4: universe with like a game of thrown.
- 37:17Speaker 2: Skin over it. Oh weird, I missed that one.
- 37:20Speaker 4: That was actually really good time wow, same dude that
- 37:23Speaker 4: wrote a deceased Okay, that was really good. I'm trying
- 37:27Speaker 4: to remember there's something else that is just now started
- 37:30Speaker 4: coming out that is has the DC else World's label
- 37:33Speaker 4: on it.
- 37:33Speaker 2: I can't so where it's something to be like Red sun.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Beat that would be an else Worlds.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, all right, cool, all right, Well Superman the
- 37:43Speaker 1: Kryptonite Spectrum issue number one is by w Matxwell, Prince
- 37:48Speaker 1: Martin Razzo, and Chris O'Halleran, and they are the creators
- 37:53Speaker 1: who did Ice Cream Man, which is I think it's
- 37:56Speaker 1: from Image Comics.
- 37:57Speaker 2: It's a horror series. I read like the first issue.
- 38:00Speaker 1: But I'm not a horror person at all, so that
- 38:02Speaker 1: was pretty much my whole exposure to it. I thought
- 38:04Speaker 1: it had some great art and everything, and it was cool,
- 38:07Speaker 1: but I moved on immediately now then not ever go back,
- 38:11Speaker 1: and they had a lot of issues at that joint too,
- 38:13Speaker 1: but now I'm good. Superman The Kryptonite Spectrum is the
- 38:17Speaker 1: complete opposite as people longtime listeners and for all nerds
- 38:21Speaker 1: know Superman. All Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Quietly
- 38:27Speaker 1: Frank Quietly is just It's one of my favorite comic
- 38:30Speaker 1: books ever. It's probably in my top ten comics. It's
- 38:34Speaker 1: definitely my favorite Superman story, as much as I love
- 38:37Speaker 1: things I've read Son and Whatever Happened to the Man
- 38:40Speaker 1: of Tomorrow. All Star Superman is just to meet the
- 38:43Speaker 1: peak of Superman and Superman The Kryptonite Spectrum has that
- 38:49Speaker 1: same feeling, like immediately I was getting that feeling from this,
- 38:53Speaker 1: and I'm just like, oh, this is great, this is
- 38:55Speaker 1: what I'm looking for. And basically the story of the
- 38:58Speaker 1: Kryptonite Spectrum is in the title Superman gets he finds
- 39:04Speaker 1: four different new colors of kryptonite, and he enlists Batman
- 39:09Speaker 1: to help him as he experiments to figure out what
- 39:13Speaker 1: they are, because he's like, I got.
- 39:14Speaker 2: To know what these do to me before the other night.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Lets Luthor knows what these are doing to me, And
- 39:20Speaker 1: of course during the time, Luthor knows about these new
- 39:23Speaker 1: forms of kryptonite, so he's sending things to bother and
- 39:26Speaker 1: attack Superman while Superman's trying to do this.
- 39:30Speaker 2: There's also a relationship with Lois Lage going on in
- 39:33Speaker 2: the background.
- 39:33Speaker 1: And it's just a really dope first issue because in
- 39:37Speaker 1: the first issue he gets exposed to I think it's
- 39:39Speaker 1: purple kryptonite, and the purple kryptonite affects his experience with time,
- 39:45Speaker 1: where like how we were talking about ancestral recall, just
- 39:48Speaker 1: like that he's kind of out of time. And so
- 39:51Speaker 1: it uses a lot of ill things about the coma
- 39:53Speaker 1: book format to show how Superman is out of time,
- 39:57Speaker 1: like in certain panels he'll be there and then he won't.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Characters will appear they're talking. You know, captions will be
- 40:04Speaker 1: out of nowhere, and then they'll make sense later on
- 40:06Speaker 1: as you read the comic. And so a really great
- 40:10Speaker 1: first issue. Like I say, if you've ever read All
- 40:13Speaker 1: Star Superman or if you saw Superman twenty twenty five,
- 40:16Speaker 1: the movie that's out right now, I think it'll be
- 40:19Speaker 1: in streaming in a few weeks, if not sooner than that.
- 40:22Speaker 1: This is that type of feeling, like this is what
- 40:25Speaker 1: you're looking for. If you came to move from the
- 40:27Speaker 1: movie and you've never read a Superman comic but you
- 40:30Speaker 1: saw the movie, go pick this up because this will
- 40:33Speaker 1: give you that feeling. It's something where I feel like
- 40:36Speaker 1: you don't need to know too much about Superman to
- 40:38Speaker 1: get into it. It gives you all the basics and
- 40:41Speaker 1: it's pretty much like that Eternal Superman story.
- 40:44Speaker 2: You know, there's.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Superman, there's Batman, there's Lois Lane, and there's Lex Luthor
- 40:49Speaker 1: and it's cracking, gotcha.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't wait for the next issue.
- 40:54Speaker 1: Should be out pretty soon too, because just like this,
- 40:56Speaker 1: this came out towards the beginning of August, so I'm
- 40:59Speaker 1: high for the second issue and yeah, check it out.
- 41:05Speaker 3: This is one that I was anticipating. I was familiar
- 41:08Speaker 3: with ice Cream Man.
- 41:09Speaker 4: So my late podcast co host Skippin tash that w
- 41:16Speaker 4: Maxwell Prince like the ice Cream Man was his favorite
- 41:18Speaker 4: book that was ongoing at the time, and it's actually
- 41:21Speaker 4: still ongoing, and it was known or is known for
- 41:26Speaker 4: just all of these ways where it just kind of
- 41:27Speaker 4: plays with the medium of comics. Oh, every time ice
- 41:32Speaker 4: Cream Man comes out, it can easily be considered like
- 41:35Speaker 4: the best book of the month. Damn for me though,
- 41:40Speaker 4: it's hard because it's a horror book and it's not
- 41:43Speaker 4: a horror book and like that there's jump scares and
- 41:45Speaker 4: stuff like that. It's one of those books that just
- 41:47Speaker 4: like examines like all the ills of society minds you
- 41:52Speaker 4: that it's right there in a book, and it's just
- 41:54Speaker 4: like you you read ice Cream Man and you kind
- 41:56Speaker 4: of come away from it like dang, that was messed up,
- 41:59Speaker 4: or oh that was kind of spooky, or like, man,
- 42:02Speaker 4: people really are thinking like that, and so it's like
- 42:04Speaker 4: that there's all these ways where it messes with you.
- 42:07Speaker 4: And so it was a book that I wasn't picking
- 42:09Speaker 4: up in singles. I decided to read, like I think
- 42:12Speaker 4: the first seven issues back to back and I was like,
- 42:14Speaker 4: that is not a book that you can binge like.
- 42:18Speaker 4: There was there's one issue where it's like a little
- 42:21Speaker 4: girl's I think her sister died and she was like
- 42:24Speaker 4: blaming herself and like being haunted by the sister. There
- 42:27Speaker 4: was another one where this dude like decides to jump
- 42:31Speaker 4: out of a window and like on his way down,
- 42:34Speaker 4: his whole life is flashing before his eyes, but it's
- 42:36Speaker 4: like all the bad things he did in life, and
- 42:38Speaker 4: like just there. There was an Eisner winning if I'm
- 42:42Speaker 4: not mistaken two partern called Decompression in a Wreck and
- 42:47Speaker 4: it literally like takes place over two issues and it's
- 42:51Speaker 4: like the whole I don't know twelve seconds that it
- 42:54Speaker 4: takes for you for two cars to have a head
- 42:56Speaker 4: on collision, and it's like all these people's thoughts during
- 43:00Speaker 4: the accident and stuff. So it's like there's all these
- 43:03Speaker 4: like again like sort of mind bending. The stuff that
- 43:06Speaker 4: you like about absolute Martian Manhunter is present there in spades.
- 43:12Speaker 4: But again, you don't come away from it feeling great
- 43:16Speaker 4: about anything you just read, and so it's.
- 43:19Speaker 3: A hard it's a hard sell to me.
- 43:21Speaker 1: Yeah, now I'm a past because as much as I
- 43:24Speaker 1: love all those things you're saying right there. It's I
- 43:27Speaker 1: might check out that Decompression two part or just to
- 43:29Speaker 1: see how that's done. But yeah, that's like I'm a
- 43:35Speaker 1: huge Stephen King fan, and I'm also a person who
- 43:37Speaker 1: regredded pretty much ninety percent of the Stephen King books
- 43:41Speaker 1: that I've read over my time other than The Dark Tower.
- 43:45Speaker 1: I always tell people that's the one series that didn't
- 43:47Speaker 1: ruin my life, but a lot of his other stuff,
- 43:50Speaker 1: like Running Man, which like that movie, I'm it looks
- 43:54Speaker 1: like it's troming too close to the book. So I'm
- 43:57Speaker 1: really not anticipating that. My podcast partner Tatiana went and
- 44:01Speaker 1: saw The Long Walk because I was not going to
- 44:03Speaker 1: ruin myself again because I've read it and it's.
- 44:06Speaker 2: That type of creepy, spooky stuff.
- 44:09Speaker 1: The message with me jump stairs, don't do anything to me, yeah,
- 44:12Speaker 1: you know, other than made me jump, of course, But
- 44:15Speaker 1: it's that type of stuff. Like I can watch those
- 44:16Speaker 1: type of movies all day, but if you give me
- 44:19Speaker 1: a movie or a book or a comic that makes
- 44:21Speaker 1: you think or it's about like regular people doing horrible
- 44:24Speaker 1: stuff to other people, I can't do it.
- 44:27Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, I feel so I was afraid coming into this.
- 44:30Speaker 4: I was like, not even so much afraid of it,
- 44:33Speaker 4: but it was just like, okay, what does this team
- 44:35Speaker 4: have to offer? Super and you and everyone else I
- 44:41Speaker 4: know who has read it so far.
- 44:42Speaker 2: It's just like, yo, this is amazing, amazing.
- 44:44Speaker 3: I think that's just a testament to how good this
- 44:46Speaker 3: creative team is.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Straight up, it's exact opposite. And you know, I know
- 44:51Speaker 1: that any great you know writer and artists can do,
- 44:54Speaker 1: you know, all types of genres. You know, I like
- 44:56Speaker 1: to explore all types of things and stuff I've written,
- 44:58Speaker 1: and I'm like, well, I'll never read that, you know,
- 45:01Speaker 1: but I wrote it, but it's just things like that.
- 45:03Speaker 2: So I didn't. I had no idea about it.
- 45:07Speaker 1: I went into Anyone Comic shout out to my brother
- 45:09Speaker 1: Dmitri in there, and you know, I was like, okay,
- 45:11Speaker 1: what's dope this month? And he handed me this and
- 45:14Speaker 1: I was like, oh, okay, all right, you know need
- 45:16Speaker 1: that to.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Name everything just and boom read it. Loved it.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Superman, the Kryptonite spectrum, beautiful art, beautiful colors, and like
- 45:26Speaker 1: I say, if you've never read a Superman comic, if
- 45:29Speaker 1: you're new to comics, I feel like this is one
- 45:31Speaker 1: of those ones. And that was actually a debate that
- 45:34Speaker 1: I've been having or I saw people talk about. They
- 45:36Speaker 1: said that All Star Superman might be one of those
- 45:38Speaker 1: comics that people reckon mend to people and it's too deep,
- 45:42Speaker 1: you know.
- 45:43Speaker 2: But I just dave it to.
- 45:44Speaker 1: Someone and they're enjoying it so far, so I don't know,
- 45:47Speaker 1: and they haven't read many Superman comics at all. I
- 45:49Speaker 1: think both All Star and there's actually a new edition
- 45:54Speaker 1: of All Star. If you're going into your store to
- 45:56Speaker 1: pick up Superman, you can also pick up the All
- 45:59Speaker 1: Star Edition. It's a new manga sawzed edition of the
- 46:03Speaker 1: book that's right now. Ye yeah, and you know that,
- 46:06Speaker 1: Like I say, if you need two great Superman stories,
- 46:10Speaker 1: you really can't do much better than Superman the Kryptonite
- 46:14Speaker 1: Spectrum and All Star Superman, which is the new manga edition.
- 46:17Speaker 1: So go check it out.
- 46:19Speaker 4: All Star is really good, real good. And I'm trying
- 46:22Speaker 4: to remember, like if it's super new reader friendly.
- 46:26Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't.
- 46:28Speaker 1: It wasn't that story I read. Yeah, it's definitely not mine,
- 46:33Speaker 1: so it's but.
- 46:36Speaker 3: It has all the hallmarks of like this classic Superman.
- 46:39Speaker 2: So it's hard.
- 46:40Speaker 3: It's hard to say.
- 46:40Speaker 4: I wouldn't recommend it to new people, Like if you have,
- 46:43Speaker 4: if you've seen any Superman movie ever, like you know
- 46:47Speaker 4: enough to read on.
- 46:47Speaker 2: Yeah, that's how I feel too. And I feel like
- 46:49Speaker 2: it's so.
- 46:50Speaker 1: Well done and all the individual little stories like or
- 46:55Speaker 1: even the weirdness of Superman is pretty well explained, you know,
- 46:59Speaker 1: like you know, Bottle City of Candor. And I think
- 47:03Speaker 1: the Bizarro issues are some of the ones that might
- 47:05Speaker 1: throw new readers off because those are pretty weird and
- 47:09Speaker 1: pretty like, Okay, what if you don't know some of
- 47:11Speaker 1: the stuff it's reference and it might seem a little strange,
- 47:13Speaker 1: But overall, I think, you know, just pick up that
- 47:17Speaker 1: manga edition and check it out, because if you haven't,
- 47:20Speaker 1: it's just one of the best books ever.
- 47:23Speaker 2: And some of those moments aurech as, oh my god.
- 47:26Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's only like ten dollars.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's like grab that joint. It's twelve issues
- 47:32Speaker 2: for ten bucks. It's like fire, Like, come on, man.
- 47:35Speaker 3: Now, if you want to splurge, to spend a little
- 47:37Speaker 3: bit more.
- 47:38Speaker 4: They've got a Superman box set that was supposed to
- 47:41Speaker 4: come out alongside the movie, but it's a box set
- 47:44Speaker 4: of like I think four or five trade paperbacks.
- 47:46Speaker 2: All Stars in there for All Seasons? Is in there?
- 47:53Speaker 3: Trying to remember the other two?
- 47:54Speaker 4: I think Kingdom Come Okay, and there's one more so
- 47:59Speaker 4: it's got all He's sort of classic Superman stories in
- 48:02Speaker 4: a box set with the cool little Superman logo.
- 48:05Speaker 3: I would buy it, but I own those stories. I
- 48:08Speaker 3: just still want the box.
- 48:10Speaker 1: I don't have them all, so I might have to
- 48:11Speaker 1: hit up anyone for that. Yeah, and I would like
- 48:14Speaker 1: a bigger version of All Star cause I used to have.
- 48:16Speaker 2: The hardcover, of course, but I don't. I don't think
- 48:18Speaker 2: I do anymore. Yeah, sadly, Yeah, it's worth it.
- 48:22Speaker 4: Yeah or okay, So well, I guess I get to
- 48:26Speaker 4: close it out this month. So the last book I'm
- 48:29Speaker 4: gonna spotlight is Captain America issue number two. Captain America
- 48:34Speaker 4: written by Chips A dar Ski ur by Ski Team. Okay,
- 48:38Speaker 4: and let's see who did the colors. Just since we're
- 48:43Speaker 4: shouting out whole creative teams and whatnot, try to right
- 48:50Speaker 4: is the first of the month. Oh yeah, came out
- 48:52Speaker 4: the beginning of the month as well.
- 48:54Speaker 2: So.
- 48:56Speaker 3: Oh shout out to black editors, Shout out to Sydney Stubbs,
- 48:59Speaker 3: assistant editor on this one. Nice Frank Martin does to colors.
- 49:03Speaker 3: Frank Martin also the colorist on Absolute Batman. It is
- 49:08Speaker 3: a it is a similar color palette now that I'm
- 49:10Speaker 3: thinking of it. But Captain America in issue one, it's
- 49:14Speaker 3: basically like a brand new origin story for Captin America.
- 49:17Speaker 4: They kind of shifted his origin. So it's not that
- 49:20Speaker 4: like he still was frozen during World War Two, okay,
- 49:24Speaker 4: but he's woken up. He comes out of the ice. Later,
- 49:27Speaker 4: he comes out of the ice basically in the aftermath
- 49:31Speaker 4: of nine to eleven. Oh, and so it's he comes
- 49:36Speaker 4: out of the ice and basically joins back up with
- 49:39Speaker 4: the Army as opposed to directly being recruited to the Avengers.
- 49:42Speaker 4: It's like that's all he knows is Army life. And
- 49:45Speaker 4: in the intervening years, they had created another super soldier,
- 49:50Speaker 4: of course, and so we've got Steve Rogers Cap, and
- 49:54Speaker 4: we've got this super soldier. I think it's David Wolf
- 49:58Speaker 4: or something like that. So we got a new Cap
- 50:02Speaker 4: and old Cap. New Cap is a redhead. So in
- 50:05Speaker 4: the first.
- 50:05Speaker 3: Issue we are learning like we're seeing.
- 50:09Speaker 4: Cap come out of the ice and all that, and
- 50:11Speaker 4: then we're getting this other origin narrated.
- 50:15Speaker 3: I thought what we were reading was.
- 50:19Speaker 4: A book that Steve Rogers wrote that is spiring this
- 50:22Speaker 4: new Cap. It could have been that what we were
- 50:26Speaker 4: reading an Issue one was the New Caps Journals, because
- 50:32Speaker 4: he's got a very similar origin. He's a runt. There's
- 50:35Speaker 4: a thing that kind of forces him into action. He
- 50:37Speaker 4: sees the towers come down as a kid, so then
- 50:41Speaker 4: he's old.
- 50:41Speaker 3: Enough to join up in the army. He does.
- 50:44Speaker 4: So an Issue one, we basically get sent to the
- 50:48Speaker 4: this there's a conflict in Labia and so there is
- 50:53Speaker 4: this strike team that is assembled that has both Caps
- 50:59Speaker 4: on it, Steve.
- 51:01Speaker 3: Rogers, New Captain America.
- 51:03Speaker 4: They're both on this strike team and so they're going
- 51:05Speaker 4: to Latviia to just kind of help out or whatever.
- 51:09Speaker 4: And what we're seeing is like a conflict between two
- 51:11Speaker 4: different ideals. Steve Rogers is still like kind of you know,
- 51:16Speaker 4: we got to do what's right. It doesn't really matter
- 51:18Speaker 4: what the orders are or whatever. And you know, the
- 51:21Speaker 4: New Captain America is basically like yo, like that's not
- 51:25Speaker 4: how war works. And so it's really interesting, like this
- 51:28Speaker 4: idea of someone from you know what we would call
- 51:31Speaker 4: the greatest generation. Like, you know, I live in a
- 51:35Speaker 4: super conservative area, and it's like when white people get
- 51:38Speaker 4: to talking about their grandparents, they're served in World War Two,
- 51:41Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying, It's like they were the
- 51:43Speaker 4: best people ever. They served their country purely to fight
- 51:48Speaker 4: a fight of good versus evil, right, And I guess
- 51:52Speaker 4: that's fair because it's like World War Two is pretty
- 51:55Speaker 4: clear cut, like you had straight up dictators trying to
- 51:59Speaker 4: take over the world, and so America and the Allied
- 52:01Speaker 4: forces are like, now, we can't have that. We're gonna
- 52:03Speaker 4: fight for democracy for freedom.
- 52:05Speaker 3: Cool.
- 52:05Speaker 4: Right, So somebody who has those ideals coming up against
- 52:11Speaker 4: someone who fought in Afghanistan and then just kind of
- 52:16Speaker 4: got dragged into Iraq just that on the whom of
- 52:20Speaker 4: the president, not because there's anything that warranted us being
- 52:23Speaker 4: in Iraq. And so you've got this grizzled war veteran
- 52:28Speaker 4: that's like, no, we're not doing that, Like this ain't
- 52:31Speaker 4: how life works. Like I love that you're an idealist,
- 52:34Speaker 4: Steve Rodgers, but this is what war really is. And
- 52:39Speaker 4: so it's a really interesting conflict that I normally wouldn't
- 52:42Speaker 4: care about, but I like it.
- 52:45Speaker 1: Definitely got to check this out. I notice, so is
- 52:48Speaker 1: this like with this new version, where are the Avengers
- 52:52Speaker 1: and everything right now?
- 52:54Speaker 4: So the Avengers they still exist. What's not clear to
- 52:58Speaker 4: me is exactly this is happening. So like, yeah, still
- 53:02Speaker 4: this is this is post Iraq War, but it's not
- 53:08Speaker 4: in the present day Marvel universe because we're seeing the
- 53:13Speaker 4: Iraq stuff in flashbacks. We're seeing like when they toppled
- 53:18Speaker 4: Saddam Hussein's tau A statue and all this stuff, and
- 53:22Speaker 4: we're seeing those glimpses of like real life American wars
- 53:25Speaker 4: just paint the picture of who you know, David is
- 53:30Speaker 4: new characters.
- 53:30Speaker 3: Let me look up this man's name. I'm gonna keep
- 53:32Speaker 3: saying the wrong thing. Yeah, David Colton.
- 53:36Speaker 4: I was getting confused with another character whose last name
- 53:38Speaker 4: is Wolf. But David Colton was formed in like all
- 53:42Speaker 4: the modern wars that we grew up on and right right,
- 53:48Speaker 4: foreign interests and all that, like the oil Wars. So yeah,
- 53:54Speaker 4: it's interesting, like this doesn't take place during all the
- 53:57Speaker 4: one World underdoing stuff that's happening right now. They'll doom
- 54:00Speaker 4: is the villain an issue too. Kind of ends with
- 54:04Speaker 4: Steve Rodgers being invited into like Doom's chambers for whatever reason.
- 54:09Speaker 2: But you know, I think I kind of like that.
- 54:13Speaker 2: I know people some people like like this.
- 54:15Speaker 1: Unified Marvel universe for everything connects and every story connects
- 54:21Speaker 1: to each other. But I kind of like this version
- 54:23Speaker 1: where it's like certain stories are in whatever, you know,
- 54:27Speaker 1: the main timeline and they're all connecting, and in certain
- 54:30Speaker 1: stories are just kind of off on their own and
- 54:33Speaker 1: telling their own story and maybe they do connect, maybe
- 54:35Speaker 1: they not. You know, we'll see how all plays out.
- 54:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:38Speaker 3: I enjoyed that aspect of it too.
- 54:40Speaker 4: This is my first Captain America series coming off stands.
- 54:44Speaker 4: I've read like other stuff and collected editions, but for
- 54:47Speaker 4: me to have just picked up my first America number
- 54:50Speaker 4: one and they're like, oh wait, he just woke up in.
- 54:53Speaker 3: Two thousand and two. Yeah what, I'm confused.
- 54:56Speaker 4: But somehow it's going to line up then, I'm not
- 55:01Speaker 4: really worried about that.
- 55:02Speaker 1: No, No, that's how it should be, honestly, because one
- 55:05Speaker 1: world on the Doom has been dragging, to be honest,
- 55:08Speaker 1: I mean, many know BJ What messed me up was
- 55:11Speaker 1: like two issues in I went and.
- 55:14Speaker 2: Read the Old Emperor.
- 55:16Speaker 1: Doom from the eighties, the graphic novel that I'd never
- 55:19Speaker 1: read before, and I'm like, this is the same series,
- 55:22Speaker 1: but it wrapped up in one graphic novel and it
- 55:25Speaker 1: was such an ill ending Emperor Doom. I do not
- 55:28Speaker 1: want to spoil it for anyone, but it's basically the
- 55:31Speaker 1: same story as being told in One World Underdom right now,
- 55:35Speaker 1: and it's a graphic novel from the nineteen eighties, so
- 55:37Speaker 1: it's just one graphic novel and the ending is one
- 55:41Speaker 1: of them indies where you're like, it's kind of fucked up,
- 55:44Speaker 1: ain't it?
- 55:44Speaker 2: You know?
- 55:44Speaker 1: I mean, it's like, damn, so I don't know how
- 55:48Speaker 1: One World on the Doom is going to wrap up,
- 55:50Speaker 1: but having read the story before, you know, I hadn't
- 55:54Speaker 1: read it before. But then I read it an issue too,
- 55:56Speaker 1: and now we're still dragging all months later with One
- 55:58Speaker 1: World on the Doom.
- 55:59Speaker 2: It's like, I'm like, y'all could have been wrapped us up.
- 56:02Speaker 4: So yeah, the I don't know, modern marvel has been interesting. Yeah,
- 56:12Speaker 4: I feel like I picked the wrong time to be
- 56:14Speaker 4: a comic reviewer because you say great stuff about things
- 56:17Speaker 4: and it's like I'm getting these trades and I'm like,
- 56:21Speaker 4: this is better This is better than what's coming out right.
- 56:24Speaker 2: Now, bro you Yeah.
- 56:27Speaker 1: In fact, I'm gonna do this now on air so
- 56:29Speaker 1: we can give a shout out to it for I
- 56:32Speaker 1: talked about this site a lot. It's a very random site,
- 56:35Speaker 1: but it is one of my favorite sites of all time.
- 56:37Speaker 2: Super megamonkey dot net.
- 56:40Speaker 1: If you are a Marvel fan, check it out super
- 56:43Speaker 1: mega monkey dot net. It has a timeline of Marvel
- 56:47Speaker 1: comics where the person behind this site reviewed every Marvel
- 56:51Speaker 1: comic and to the best of their ability, placed every
- 56:55Speaker 1: Marvel comic in chronological order, starting with Fantastic four number one,
- 57:00Speaker 1: and then it goes from like everything that happens after that.
- 57:03Speaker 1: So it's like this what happened in Fantastic four number
- 57:05Speaker 1: one kicking off the Marvel universe, and then this happened next,
- 57:08Speaker 1: and this happened next, and this happened next, and they
- 57:10Speaker 1: got all the way into the nineties. It is an
- 57:13Speaker 1: incredible endeavor and it will just show you how ill
- 57:18Speaker 1: Marvel used to be. I mean, way before my time.
- 57:21Speaker 1: I'm talking seventies, you know, eighties, like even nineties.
- 57:26Speaker 2: Started really falling apart.
- 57:27Speaker 1: Yeah, but the seventies, early eighties, it was just so connected.
- 57:31Speaker 1: You know, you would see Spider Man in one issue
- 57:34Speaker 1: and then he'd turn up in X Men that issue,
- 57:36Speaker 1: and he you know, the X Men would go off
- 57:38Speaker 1: planet for five issues, so they wouldn't be seen in
- 57:40Speaker 1: any other Marvel comics for five issues. It was just
- 57:44Speaker 1: more of a unified universe. But at the same time,
- 57:48Speaker 1: I don't think it was better. I don't know it.
- 57:51Speaker 2: It is weird because I think it's like Emperor Doomed
- 57:54Speaker 2: to me are just better than One World Underdom. Sorry,
- 57:56Speaker 2: you know, but.
- 57:57Speaker 1: I do love the Fantastic Four the out right now
- 58:01Speaker 1: under Ryan North as much as I love old Fantastic
- 58:04Speaker 1: Four from like John Byrne or you know, even Stan
- 58:06Speaker 1: Leed and I've.
- 58:07Speaker 2: Read in trade. So yeah, yeah, it's interesting. Yeah.
- 58:10Speaker 4: I don't have issues with like, well generally, I don't
- 58:13Speaker 4: have issues with the month to month comics for me.
- 58:16Speaker 4: Events that are kind of out of control.
- 58:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the problem.
- 58:19Speaker 4: Like we got One World Underdoom going on, it is
- 58:21Speaker 4: still ongoing. Ever, Meanwhile, Jonathan Hickman's got Imperial going and
- 58:28Speaker 4: it's like, you know, that's his own thing. I don't
- 58:30Speaker 4: really do a bunch of cosmic stuff. I'm literally only
- 58:33Speaker 4: reading Imperial because it seems to be leading somehow to
- 58:38Speaker 4: Child getting back on the throne of Wakanda. Did you
- 58:41Speaker 4: see they announced the new Black Panther series an so
- 58:45Speaker 4: I didn't know they have a series common called Black
- 58:48Speaker 4: Panther Intergalactic. It's gonna be four issues. Yeah, they're still
- 58:53Speaker 4: Black Panther is still in space. Yeah, it's and it's
- 58:57Speaker 4: going to be dealing with the aftermath of whatever happens
- 58:59Speaker 4: in this Imperial is an imperial or imperial war. Ever
- 59:03Speaker 4: happens in Imperial, it's going to have consequences for Wakanda,
- 59:08Speaker 4: and there are some sort of strange forces trying to
- 59:12Speaker 4: keep To'challa from reclaiming the throne, which says to me,
- 59:16Speaker 4: by the end of the four issues, to Chila is
- 59:18Speaker 4: going to be on the throne, and maybe we'll finally
- 59:20Speaker 4: get a Black Panther what volume six a new new
- 59:24Speaker 4: number one mm because we haven't had a Black Panther
- 59:28Speaker 4: ongoing since Eve you and dropped off the title over
- 59:32Speaker 4: a year ago.
- 59:34Speaker 1: I mean, that's a little bit of time, but not
- 59:37Speaker 1: as long as I thought. Really, I thought it was
- 59:39Speaker 1: more than that, but.
- 59:40Speaker 3: Yeah, probably been more than I need to look it.
- 59:42Speaker 2: Up, but yeah, no, I mean I could always deal
- 59:45Speaker 2: with it.
- 59:45Speaker 1: But man, like you said, these crossovers and I'm like,
- 59:49Speaker 1: the biggest hickmen stand in the world, but they've been.
- 59:53Speaker 2: Missing you because that that magic was that.
- 59:58Speaker 3: Oh God's.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: And then this, like I asked a metriate anyone the
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: other day, I'm like, yo, is it because you know
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: they got kicked so hard after X Men and out
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: it's like, fuck it, I'm just being this check and
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: just give them Marvel whatever because and that's like you said, like,
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: that's why so hard for me to take Marvel seriously,
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: like when you had something so amazing and incredible and
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: so forward thinking like Coacoa, to just wipe it off
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: the map and go with this nonsense that Breathwort and
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: the rest of the X Men crew, you know, shout
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: out to anyone I love over there.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: But I'm sorry, that's hot mess right now. So yeah, no,
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: but you.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: Know that's why we're here to talk about other books
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: and talk about things that we love and you know,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: you know, maybe X Men will get it back together
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: one day. We always have coca because those are some
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: great times man that you know, like you know, you
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: you're at the perfect time man, because shit, you was
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: reviewing during Cocoa era, like you know, that's some of
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: the best X me and ever.
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: No, I very much enjoyed that. And now they're bringing
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: that back and collected editions. Uh. And the next few
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: months we get the X Men red and listens coming,
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: the Jerry Duggan Arros coming to getting a big oversized hardcover,
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: and I think they're doing a Ker and Gillen like
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: the Immortal X Men and all that very soon.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: Which that was all great stuff, so all great stuff.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: So all right, well that's been another month of this podcast.

- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Titans don't do, so it might be a semi legal type.
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: Sequel, unlicensed, unofficial sequel.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: Yeah, there we go.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, underground, it's the bootleg.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: It's cool, hey man.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: You know, it's how we gotta make it work, you know,
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: fake it till you make it
