- 0:00Chapter 8 from the book of Ezekiel.
- 0:03Dear Lord, please open our eyes to what you have to say to us.
- 0:08We ask this in the name of Jesus.
- 0:11Idolatry in the Temple in the sixth year.
- 0:14In the sixth month, on the 5th day, while I was sitting in my
- 0:18house and the elders of Judah were sitting before me, the hand
- 0:22of the Sovereign Lord came on me.
- 0:24There I looked and I saw a figure like that of a man.
- 0:30From what appeared to be his waist down he was like fire, and
- 0:35from there up his appearance was as bright as glowing metal.
- 0:41He stretched out what looked like a hand and took me by the
- 0:45hair of my head. The Spirit lifted me up between
- 0:51earth and heaven in and in visions of God.
- 0:56He took me to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate at
- 1:01the inner court where the idol that provokes to jealousy stood.
- 1:06And there before me was the glory of the God of Israel, as
- 1:11in the vision I had seen in the plain.
- 1:16Then he said to me, Son of Man, look toward the north.
- 1:21So I looked, and in the entrance north of the gate of the altar,
- 1:25I saw the idol of jealousy. And he said to me, Son of Man,
- 1:30do you see what they are doing? The utterly detestable things
- 1:35the Israelites are doing here, things that will drive me far
- 1:39from my sanctuary, but you will see things that are even more
- 1:44detestable. Then he brought me to the
- 1:46entrance to the court. I looked and saw a hole in the
- 1:50wall. He said to me, Son of Man, now
- 1:53dig into the wall. So I dug into the wall and saw a
- 1:57doorway there. And he said, go in and see the
- 2:01wicked and detestable things they are doing here.
- 2:04So I went in and looked and I and I saw portrayed all over the
- 2:09walls all kinds of crawling things and unclean animals, and
- 2:14all the idols of Israel. In front of them stood 70 elders
- 2:20of Israel, and Jayzanaya son of Shafan was standing among them.
- 2:28Each had a censer in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense
- 2:33was rising. He said to me, son of man, have
- 2:37you seen what the elders of Israel are doing in the
- 2:39darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol?
- 2:44They say the Lord does not see us.
- 2:47The Lord has forsaken the land again.
- 2:50He said. You will see them doing things
- 2:52that are even more detestable. Then he brought me to the
- 2:56entrance of the Northgate of the House of the Lord, and I saw
- 3:01women sitting there mourning the God Tammuz.
- 3:05He said to me, Do you see this son of man?
- 3:08You will see things that are even more detestable than this.
- 3:12Then he brought me into the inner court of the House of the
- 3:15Lord, and there at the entrance to the temple, between the
- 3:19portico and the altar, there were about 25 men with their
- 3:23backs toward the temple of the Lord and their faces toward the
- 3:28east. They were bowing down to the sun
- 3:31in the east. He said to me, Have you seen
- 3:34this, Son of Man? Is it a trivial matter for the
- 3:38people of Judah to do the detestable things they are doing
- 3:41here? Must they also fill the land
- 3:44with violence and continually arouse my anger?
- 3:48Look at them, putting the branch to their nose.
- 3:52Therefore, I will deal with them in anger.
- 3:55I will not look on them with pity or spare them.
- 3:58Although they shout in my ears, I will not listen to them.
- 4:03And that's the end of chapter 8. I will read what the study Bible
- 4:07says, the commentary on that, and then I'll I'll go to Amir
- 4:12Sarfati's book exploring Ezekiel and talk about that too.
- 4:17So how did God's hand come on Ezekiel?
- 4:19This expression describes God's Commission of Ezekiel as a
- 4:23prophet, one who speaks for God. It may have also indicated the
- 4:29presence of God's Spirit on Ezekiel.
- 4:32What idol had been allowed in the temple?
- 4:35This may have been the Ashira pole that was installed during
- 4:40the decadent days of King Manasseh.
- 4:43Any idol, whether in the temple or not, undermined their the
- 4:47loyalty God's people were to have for the Lord and provoked
- 4:51God to righteous jealousy. What detestable things were done
- 4:56in the temple? They had placed pictures of
- 4:59crawling things and detestable animals on the temple walls
- 5:03along with various idols. How repugnant to allow into the
- 5:07temple pictures of animals designated as unclean and off
- 5:12limits to God's people. Serpent deities associated with
- 5:16neighboring Egyptian, Canaanite, and Babylonian religions had
- 5:21corrupted the sanctuary of the Lord.
- 5:24Who was Jayaznaya son of Shafan? He was from a prominent
- 5:31Jerusalem family and presided over the idolatrous worship.
- 5:36He is not the same person as the Jayasna mentioned in Ezekiel
- 5:4111/1. Why were the women mourning for
- 5:45Tammuz? Tammuz was the Hebrew name for
- 5:48the Sumerian Babylonian God of plant life.
- 5:51Every fall, when the crops died and the trees shed their leaves,
- 5:55women would ceremonially mourn his death.
- 5:59Every spring, when the plants began to sprout, they would
- 6:03celebrate his coming back to life.
- 6:06What does putting the branch to their nose mean?
- 6:09This obscure phrase is not found elsewhere in the Bible.
- 6:12It could perhaps be rendered as a stench to my nose,
- 6:16illustrating how offensive the people's idolatry was to God.
- 6:20Or it may be a part of a Pagan ceremony involving the worship
- 6:25of nature. That's the end of the commentary
- 6:28for chapter 8. And now I will go to Amir's book
- 6:32and what he says about he, he brings this like, you know,
- 6:37sometimes it might be kind of hard for us to understand this
- 6:41or empathize maybe with what's written in the Bible.
- 6:45So he gives a scene for, you know, that humans can relate to
- 6:52about how God may perhaps feel when he's showing Ezekiel these
- 6:57things in his temple, which is the House of the Lord.
- 7:01And here's what Amir says about the image of jealousy.
- 7:06The location of Ezekiel's arrival was the Northgate of the
- 7:10inner Court, One of the three gates to that part of the temple
- 7:14grounds. The others were the South and
- 7:17the East. There in the holy place, stood
- 7:20an idol, what Ezekiel called quote, an image of jealousy.
- 7:25Whose jealousy? Gods?
- 7:28Imagine a woman bringing her boyfriend into the family room,
- 7:33snuggling up to her bow on the couch, flipping on the
- 7:38television, then starting a make out session, all the while her
- 7:43husband is watching the disrespectful display from his
- 7:48easy chair. This very act is designed to
- 7:52affront and stoke jealousy. God's words to Ezekiel.
- 7:56Ezekiel reflected his hurt and anger when he said, Son of Man,
- 8:00do you see what they are doing? The great abominations from the
- 8:03House of of Israel commits here to make me go far away from my
- 8:09sanctuary. Now turn again.
- 8:12You will see even greater abominations in verse 6.
- 8:15According to God's words, the adulterous acts of the House of
- 8:19Israel were intentionally designed to drive him away.
- 8:24That's understandable on Israel's part.
- 8:27It can get awkward trying to carry on an affair while your
- 8:32husband is sitting in the room. Note the last line.
- 8:37You will see greater abominations that will become
- 8:40the unfortunate repeating chorus that closes each scene of this
- 8:45tragic performance. With every succeeding act, the
- 8:48situation will only get worse. And that's those are all that it
- 8:53goes through and describes each one of them.
- 8:55I would I would recommend Amir's book.
- 8:57It's that's just an example of how he writes and it's a really
- 9:03easy book to read and it has some insightful information in
- 9:08it. And I'm going to flip through.
- 9:12You know, the one thing that he talks about in this chapter 8
- 9:18was that all these spiritual leaders needed to do was to turn
- 9:24toward the temple, confess and make supplication before God and
- 9:30the Lord would forgive them and take care of the problem.
- 9:33But instead they were turning towards the sun and what he what
- 9:40Amir also says. As for the elders who turned
- 9:43their faces toward the sun, their timing was off.
- 9:46The Lord promised a coming era when all will turn and worship
- 9:52the sun. To you who fear my name, the Sun
- 9:56of righteousness shall arise with healing in his wings, and
- 10:01you shall go out and grow fat like stall fed calves.
- 10:06That's from Malachi chapter 4 verse 2.
- 10:09Yeshua will come again and all will face him and give him glory
- 10:15and praise. So much hope, so much promise.
- 10:18All of it is to be found in the Lord.
- 10:22Sadly, the Israelites of Ezekiel's day missed it all.
- 10:27So there, there's something that I heard recently, I think it's
- 10:31Lakewood Church. Josh, is it Joshua or I can't
- 10:35remember the lead pastor's name? I do, I watch a lot of his
- 10:39videos on YouTube. I think it's Lakewood church.
- 10:43I might have gotten that wrong wrong too, but he has these
- 10:46interesting facts in the Bible and he talked about this a
- 10:53revelation that he got somewhere regarding.
- 10:56I think it's this actual verse, Malachi 42, which is really
- 11:01interesting. So I'll, you might want to
- 11:04search for it on YouTube and but I'll tell you kind of what he he
- 11:09came away with when he went into the Hebrew words because it does
- 11:13say with healing in his wings. So I'm going to reread this
- 11:16again to you who fear my name. The Sun of Righteousness shall
- 11:20arise with healing in his wings and you shall go out and grow
- 11:26fat like stall fed calves. This healing in his wings.
- 11:34That's a translation but what if you look at the Hebrew word it
- 11:39talks about like the corners are the edge, the edge of the
- 11:42garment and what he drew a conclusion that he drew this
- 11:48other pastor. He drew that when you, if you
- 11:53are aware of the, the woman who I think was like bleeding for 12
- 11:57years and Jesus had on some sort of cloak or robe or whatever.
- 12:04And they had these, you know, on the wings, which could also mean
- 12:08the corners of a garment. And Jesus was wearing this robe.
- 12:14And Jesus suddenly stopped and said, who touched my robe?
- 12:17I felt power go out from it. And it was a woman.
- 12:21And she she did. And So what this pastor of the
- 12:26church recently said that I thought was really interesting
- 12:30and insightful was that this woman had known the what Malachi
- 12:36wrote and she recognized him as the Sun of Righteousness and
- 12:40knew that there was healing in his garment.
- 12:43And that's why she grabbed hold of it.
- 12:46Now, I guess that's maybe speculation, but it is really
- 12:49interesting when you hear it and and it's, it could very well be
- 12:53true, but it's just amazing when you get those little insights
- 12:57like that about Scripture and when you get to the the actual
- 13:00Hebrew words. And I just thought I would share
- 13:03that and you might want to check it out.
- 13:07And I, I guess today I'm just going to stop with that.
- 13:12I don't I don't know if Amir has anything more on Chapter 8 that,
- 13:16you know, he gets into Chapter 9 and there is let's see.
- 13:25Yeah. I'll have more later on for
- 13:28those chapters. But for right now, I think
- 13:31that's that's about all that we will cover for today.
- 13:34And then so I hope you come back and join us for Chapter 9 next
- 13:39time. Thank you.
