- Lucas: Hey there, welcome back to Learn Norwegian with Fexingo. Luna: Oh, I'm so ready for this. Lucas: I love that energy. So today, we're going to do something really fundamental. Luna: Yeah, what's that? Lucas: Introducing yourself. Specifically, telling someone your name, and asking theirs. Luna: Oh, perfect. That's exactly what I need. Lucas: Right. So the first phrase: 'My name is...' In Norwegian, that's 'Jeg heter...' Luna: Jeg heter... Lucas: Exactly. 'Jeg' means 'I', and 'heter' means 'am called' or 'is named'. So together: 'Jeg heter...' Luna: Jeg heter... Lucas: Good. Now say it a bit faster, like normal conversation. Jeg heter. Luna: Jeg heter. Lucas: There you go. Now, let's pretend. I'll say: Jeg heter Lucas. Luna: Okay. Jeg heter Luna. Lucas: Ahh, yes! Nailed it. Luna: That feels good. Lucas: Now the second phrase: 'What is your name?' In Norwegian: 'Hva heter du?' Luna: Hva heter du? Lucas: Right. 'Hva' means 'what', 'heter' is that same 'am called', and 'du' means 'you'. So: Hva heter du? Luna: Hva heter du? Lucas: Perfect. Now let's put them together. Tiny scene. I'll start. Hei, Luna. Luna: Hei, Lucas. Hvordan går det? Lucas: Bra, takk. Jeg heter Lucas. Luna: Oh, and I say: Jeg heter Luna. Lucas: Exactly. Or you could ask me: Hva heter du? Luna: Right. Hva heter du? Lucas: Jeg heter Lucas. See? It works both ways. Luna: That's so good. Lucas: Let's do another one. Imagine we're at a coffee shop. You walk up to me. Luna: Okay. Hei. Lucas: Hei. Hva heter du? Luna: Jeg heter Luna. Hva heter du? Lucas: Jeg heter Lucas. Hyggelig. Luna: Wait, what's 'hyggelig'? Lucas: It means 'nice' or 'pleasure'. Like 'nice to meet you'. But we'll save that for another day. Luna: Oh, okay. So just Jeg heter and Hva heter du for now. Lucas: Totally. Those two phrases are plenty. Luna: Let me try one more time. Jeg heter Luna. Lucas: Yes. And if you want to ask me? Luna: Hva heter du? Lucas: Jeg heter Lucas. You're getting it. Luna: This feels really useful. Lucas: It is. Think about all the times you meet someone new. At work, online, even in a game lobby. Luna: Oh, totally. Like if I'm joining a Norwegian server somewhere. Lucas: Exactly. Hei, alle sammen. Jeg heter Luna. Luna: And then someone might say: Hei, Luna. Jeg heter... whatever their name is. Lucas: Right. Or they might ask: Hva heter du? if you haven't said it yet. Luna: Okay, I want a tiny quiz. Lucas: Sure. I'll say a phrase in English, you give me the Norwegian. Luna: Bring it on. Lucas: Number one: 'My name is.' Luna: Jeg heter. Lucas: Yes. Number two: 'What is your name?' Luna: Hva heter du? Lucas: Perfect. Now, I'll say the Norwegian, you tell me what it means. Luna: Okay. Lucas: Jeg heter. Luna: My name is. Lucas: Right. And Hva heter du? Luna: What is your name? Lucas: Absolutely. You've got these. Luna: I feel like I could actually use these now. Lucas: That's the goal. Tiny, digestible pieces you can actually remember. Luna: So just to recap one more time... Lucas: Jeg heter... means 'My name is...' Luna: Jeg heter. Lucas: And Hva heter du? means 'What is your name?' Luna: Hva heter du? Lucas: There it is. Practice those, maybe with a friend, or just say them out loud to yourself. Luna: I will. This was really fun. Lucas: I'm glad. Thanks for learning with us today on Learn Norwegian with Fexingo. Luna: Yeah, see you next time. Lucas: Ha det, alle sammen.
