- 0:23the Craigman and Lyndahl's show on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five. Our pal
- 0:27Jeff Flangwaald of ESPN joins us on the ramos Law Hotline car accident You need
- 0:32ramos Law medical doctor and attorney Ramoslaw dot com. Jefflangwald, how are you,
- 0:37my friend? I'm good. We're doing great, Leggie. Let's start
- 0:41with our buddy Tim Patrick. Your colleague Field Yates reporting a few minutes ago
- 0:47some details on the restructuring of Tim Patrick's contract. We knew there was an
- 0:53opportunity, opportunity for some savings there with Tim Patrick, but he will be
- 0:57retained and will be on the roster. How did the Broncos make this all
- 1:02work? Well? I mean we talked earlier that Tim Patrick's contract was going
- 1:08to be one of the target points and Mike mcglinchy's contract as well, and
- 1:14they both have been just that as we talked about a week ago. Uh,
- 1:19and I think it's kind to call Tim Patrick a restructuring. It was
- 1:23a severe haircut. I mean he went from you know, and and you
- 1:29know, I mean imploding a building is a form of restructuring it. Yeah,
- 1:34no, I mean you feel for Tim because two years he never caught
- 1:38a pass from Russell Wilson. Wrap your head around that for a second.
- 1:41But uh uh. He took a he took a reduction to the league minimum
- 1:46for a veteran, which is, you know, just over a million million
- 1:49two and then you know, some per game bonuses and so he will you
- 1:55know, they saved about eight million there, They saved about they got eleven
- 1:59about a I have a million cap space for kicking the can and mcglinchy's contract
- 2:04a little bit so that bill will come doe later and then you know,
- 2:07man Hurts his release created about two more million, just over two million more
- 2:13rooms. So that's like twenty one or so million, depending on that.
- 2:16You know, the exact numbers are probably a little different than that, but
- 2:21roughly twenty one million in cap space, and they were roughly fifteen over after
- 2:25they released, justin Zimmons, So that's where you put them. They're they're
- 2:30under to start free agency. How much they can participate, They're still pretty
- 2:35limited. Yeah, how more extreme could they get in? And do we
- 2:39know for sure yet which year they'll take the bigger hit on Russ's dead dead
- 2:46dead cap hit. Yeah, my understanding is they're still leaning toward the big
- 2:50hit this year. But as of the last time I checked today with people,
- 2:57no one was willing to say and decision has been made. But they
- 3:00know they have a few days yet. I do know they are. They're
- 3:04shopping around for defensive tackles. I think they want to participate there in the
- 3:08middle tier. You know, whether that means in the legal tampering period,
- 3:14you know, usually not. But the defensive tackle market got reset today with
- 3:21the Ravens. Yeah, side of their amazing defensive tackle that sets the bar.
- 3:29But so I know, I do know they do want to participate a
- 3:32little bit with some very specific spots leading the way defensive tackles and you know,
- 3:42maybe a defensive end. What about a veteran quarterback? Yeah, well
- 3:46that's that. Quarterback is like a whole other conversation here. I mean,
- 3:51yeah, they're shopping for quarterback. But you know, just do the math.
- 3:54They were fifteen over. They're roughly twenty one under Now they're nowhere near
- 4:00enough room to go shop at even for a middle tier quarterback. And you
- 4:05know, I think they will like one or two of the quarterbacks enough to
- 4:12think about trading down and taking one. Developmentally, maybe not for twenty twenty
- 4:16four, but somebody they like. Moving forward, I think they might be
- 4:20getting to that place. You know, it's just a matter of how the
- 4:25board falls and what they think they can do at that point. But I
- 4:29do still think they're going to sign a veteran or would like to, or
- 4:31it will at least kick the tires on a few just to see what the
- 4:34price is, all right, Legy, As we continue to try to talk
- 4:41about saving money, and I know that any of the guys from last year,
- 4:45I suppose they could try to still restructure. When it comes to Ben
- 4:46Powers and Zach Allen. What do you think happens with Bulls and Sutton?
- 4:50Though, I mean, again, it just is kind of it feels like
- 4:55those are two of the guys mentioned by Russ. I'm still waiting to find
- 4:59out if we're gonna have a rough side the Peyton side what's all said done?
- 5:01Maybe not, but those are two big cap numbers that they could do
- 5:05something with. Do you think they look there to trade those guys? Are
- 5:10they just gonna leave it alone? You know? And I think everything is
- 5:14on the table. I don't think if anyone's saying definitively they are are not
- 5:18going to do something right now, I think that's misspeaking to the I don't
- 5:24think there's anything not on the table right now. I mean, look what
- 5:27they've done already. I mean, Judy's going to be in play simply because
- 5:31he doesn't have any any weird bonus money left on his deal. He's going
- 5:35to be playing out a fifth year option that is guaranteed. But that's a
- 5:42relatively in the in the today's world of the NFL, that number is not
- 5:46horrible. Uh. You know, for a team to take on for for
- 5:50a wive or say, and there will be some interest. There will just
- 5:53be a matter of Broncos Lebroncos think the pick is worth it that they would.
- 5:59I do think they will get offered something for Jerry Judy, either before
- 6:03the draft or you know, as free agency gets rolling. But I think
- 6:09that's one to watch just because of the structure of the contract and you know,
- 6:14Bulls and Sutton. You know they've already done McGlinchey. You know,
- 6:18to create a problem later that's too big is not something they want to do
- 6:24either. They don't want to do all this and then kick these cans,
- 6:29multiple cans down the road, and two years from now they're doing all this
- 6:32again. I don't think, at least from speaking to people, do it.
- 6:39Yeah. No, I don't think that's what they want to do.
- 6:42And I think they would have a hard time, Unlike New Orleans, I
- 6:46think they would have a hard time selling Greg Penner on that As a long
- 6:48term strategy. I think they would dearly love to take as much pain as
- 6:55possible this year and hang in and see what they can do with a young
- 6:59team team and then get move it forward. Jeff Legwell to ESPN with us
- 7:04on the Ramos Law hotline. Uh, Jeff, want to way you to
- 7:09weigh in on our conversation from last hour talking about Justin Simmons in the bigger
- 7:13picture of the way the NFL is valuing the safety position, the the amount
- 7:18of safeties out on the market right now that have been cut loose. You
- 7:23know, we were having the discussion is safety play being devalued? Andy posited
- 7:30that point. I pushed back a little because so many of these guys are
- 7:33north of thirty, which teams just don't want to spend big money on guys
- 7:39in their thirties. That maybe the safety position isn't in as much payroll at
- 7:44least, you know, payroll wise as it would look. Where do you
- 7:46come down on this right now, LEGGI are our team starting to look at
- 7:51safeties like the running backs of the defense. I don't think anything that extrain
- 7:58Nate. I think what you're seeing is a shortening of the window overall at
- 8:05every position to what general managers and personnel people think is a good run with
- 8:11your team. You know, it used to be if you've got two contracts,
- 8:15two full contracts, that was a great run with a player with your
- 8:20team. I think everyone is shortening that window now to rookie contract and change.
- 8:26And you know, Justin's run here was eight years and that's very good.
- 8:31But I think that's sort of the max window for a lot of guys
- 8:35now. When I talk to personnel people, you know they're thinking more in
- 8:39terms of how productive will the guy be on his first contract? And then
- 8:43you know, where do you go from there? You know, and I
- 8:46think it's more that I think that just happened this year that a lot of
- 8:50safeties got paid, had the same number of birthdays, you know, And
- 8:56you know, I just think it that group was an outlier. I don't
- 9:01I don't think that's a trend yet that we can speak to, because every
- 9:05defensive coordinator I know doesn't believe you can play defense in any fashion in today's
- 9:11NFL without a mobile safety who can play down in the box and then still
- 9:16have enough athleticism to get deep when he has to. And Justin Simmons will
- 9:22have a demand. I've talked to guys already who think who've already said he's
- 9:26an upgrade for who we have on our team. So I think he will
- 9:31have interest. And it would shock me if Justin just doesn't go for as
- 9:37good a winning situation as he can possibly get, even if it costs him
- 9:41a little money. I think he's I think he's at that point where he
- 9:45just wants to get to the big game and you know, take whatever contract
- 9:50that takes to do it. All right, what do you think about Russ?
- 9:54Russ all of a sudden, he's got to visit to Pittsburgh, which
- 9:56who of course, Vegas was saying that was going to be the spot all
- 9:58along. According to your colleague Adam Schefter, you had to stop off and
- 10:03talked with the Giants real quick, and allegedly the Raiders wouldn't mind a conversation.
- 10:07What do you think goes on with Russ? How quickly do you think
- 10:09he signs? Well, hey, it's the best deal out there for a
- 10:15quarterback. You're gonna get a quarterback for a million bucks and in the NFL
- 10:18that's like ridiculous. So I think a lot of teams will be There's probably
- 10:24a few more interested behind the scenes. I mean, it's uh, I
- 10:28mean, I put Pittsburgh in my story the day I wrote you know,
- 10:31we wrote that, you know, they announced they were going to release him.
- 10:35I think a lot of people think if he vibes with Tomlin, I
- 10:41think Pittsburgh feels like they have a playoff ready team and just need a little
- 10:46bump in quarterback play. And if he goes to Pittsburgh, that's a play
- 10:50action offense with a run component. Guess what, that's the Seattle Seahawks when
- 10:56he was at his best, So and Mike Tomlin, I don't think a
- 11:01quarterback's going to stray too far with Mike Tomlin as his head coach. So
- 11:07I personally believe that would be a good situation for for Wilson if he,
- 11:13you know, if he's up for it, because that that's gonna be a
- 11:16play action, power based offense that will keep him clean with movement and under
- 11:22center and and some of those things. So I think it's a good fit.
- 11:28But I think there will be other people taking a look because again,
- 11:31you're you're going to get him for vetter minimum because the Broncos are paying the
- 11:35freight. Speaking of quarterbacks, like you what roster is Kirk Cousin's going to
- 11:39be on next year? That's that's a great question, may I mean,
- 11:43I don't you know, I've taught, I've asked people what do you think
- 11:46the market is And a lot of it's just based on the anecdotal evidence that
- 11:52people don't do great coming back from that injury. They do better than they
- 11:56ever have now, but no question, that used to be a almost a
- 12:00career ender in a lot of ways, but not the case anymore, and
- 12:03especially skilled position guys have come back pretty well from it. But the jury's
- 12:11kind of still out on quarterbacks, and you know, he's considered a high
- 12:16priced guy with a lot of a big age and coming off injuries, so
- 12:20I think would have to be the right spot. But people still think he
- 12:24can play if the leg is right. All right, Legy, if you
- 12:30had a choice, Pennicks are Bowers. I put this to Sanford yesterday.
- 12:35Which skill set will be more unique if they're both sitting there at twelve?
- 12:39For me, that Bowers is the grade. For me, I won't have
- 12:43Penix created at twelve, but Powers will be a top eight player on every
- 12:50board in the league, so you know, so for me, the value
- 12:54play is is the tight end. But you know, there are many folks
- 12:58who say quarter back or bust for the Broncos, and I know a lot
- 13:01of them are fans. And I think the guy to watch down the board
- 13:05a little bit is bo Nicks. I think he fits. And it's just
- 13:07a matter of what the Broncos think of them, because we're not going to
- 13:13know for sure until they have to show their hand. You know, they're
- 13:16gonna things will be leaked, things will be thrown out there, things will
- 13:20be lied about, and we won't know what they really think till they show
- 13:26their hand, But from a football perspective and where he could be on the
- 13:30board, I think bow Nicks is the fit of the of the guys.
- 13:35You know that that could be in play if they trade down a smidge.
- 13:39They want picks. If people don't think they want picks, they're mistaken.
- 13:43They want picks in some fashion. They know the trouble they're in, they
- 13:48know how to get out. So unless a quarterback they have graded twelve or
- 13:54above is sitting there looking at him, I think they will likely right down
- 14:00a smidge all right, real quick? Then what will be the ask for
- 14:03mac Jones? What do you think that? What do you think the return
- 14:05of mac Jones will be for New England? Anyway? Again, it's everyone's
- 14:11so quarterback, you know, thirsty part of me thinks justin fields, whatever
- 14:18deal comes out of that or whatever, you know, kind of however,
- 14:24that table is set before the draft is going to sort of set the trade
- 14:28market for for the you know quarterbacks who have been told to move on,
- 14:33you know which is mac Jones is won? You know, justin fields?
- 14:37You know the Jets are they gonna move Zach Wilson who they picked at number
- 14:41two? Uh, you know all those guys are going to be in play,
- 14:46and they're all coming off situations where their teams have said no, thank
- 14:50you, including Russ. You know, maybe maybe Russ is the first domino
- 14:54to fall in some fashion, but I think the trade market, at least
- 15:01people are telling me justin Fields may, whatever the Bears do may may sort
- 15:05of set how that all goes. Guys, you read Jeff Legwald ESPN dot
