- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here with a more high pitched voice
- 0:15than usual. Happy Friday to you.
- 0:17I hope you're going great because it is Friday.
- 0:20It is the 10th of October and as we do every Friday, today we are
- 0:27going to read another handful of proverbs.
- 0:30We are going to get a little bit of God's wisdom packaged up and
- 0:34delivered to us through the ages for us to be able to do life
- 0:38just a little bit more wisely. Ah, how good is that?
- 0:41Don't about you, but I reckon I can do with all the wisdom that
- 0:44I could possibly get my hands on.
- 0:46So Holy Spirit, slow us down. Bring us before your word,
- 0:53inspired by you for this very moment, for us to hear your
- 0:58words, for us to take them on board, and for our lives to just
- 1:04a little bit more closely reflect your Kingdom.
- 1:10How brilliant. All right, friends, let us read
- 1:12together Proverbs 17 one to seven.
- 1:26Better a dry crust eaten in peace than a house filled with
- 1:31feasting and conflict. A wise servant will rule over
- 1:38the master's disgraceful son and will share the inheritance of
- 1:42the master's children. Fire tests the purity of silver
- 1:49and gold, but the Lord tests the heart.
- 1:56Wrongdoers eagerly listen to gossip.
- 1:59Liars pay close attention to slander.
- 2:06Those who mock the poor insult their maker.
- 2:10Those who rejoice at the misfortune of others will be
- 2:13punished. Grandchildren are the crowning
- 2:19glory of the aged. Parents are the pride of their
- 2:23children. Eloquent words are not fitting
- 2:29for a fool. Even less are lies fitting for a
- 2:33ruler. And again, better a dry crust
- 2:40eaten in peace than a house filled with feasting and
- 2:44conflict. A wise servant will rule over
- 2:50the master's disgraceful son and will share the inheritance of
- 2:54the master's children. Fire tests the purity of silver
- 3:01and gold, but the Lord tests the heart.
- 3:08Wrongdoers easily listen to gossip.
- 3:10Liars pay close attention to slander.
- 3:17Those who mock the poor insult their maker.
- 3:20Those who rejoice at the misfortune of others will be
- 3:23punished. Grandchildren are the crowning
- 3:29glory of the aged. Parents are the pride of their
- 3:33children. Eloquent words are not fitting
- 3:39for a fool. Even less are lies fitting for a
- 3:42ruler. Thank you for the way that you
- 3:56have made us and the way that you have claimed us, Jesus, to
- 4:00be your friends, to be your brothers and sisters.
- 4:04And in that claim you have a better way for us to to live and
- 4:09to be. And we here in verse 7, just as
- 4:13eloquent words are not fitting for a fool and even less lies
- 4:16fitting for a ruler, that as your brothers and sisters, as
- 4:22your friends, there is a fitting way for us to be.
- 4:27And that is to speak with words of kindness and to avoid
- 4:32conflict and gossip and slander and mocking.
- 4:41All of these ways, they are not consistent with who you call us
- 4:46to be and what your world needs most.
- 4:52So Jesus, I pray that you would continue this transforming work
- 4:56in us. That we can indeed speak words
- 5:00of kindness. That when we hear gossip and
- 5:03slander around us, that we can continue to be silent or to
- 5:07encourage. That when there is conflict
- 5:10around us, that we can bring your peace.
- 5:12And when we are surrounded by words of mocking that we would
- 5:18speak your words of encouragement because that is
- 5:22fitting and that is who you have made us to be.
- 5:27So here we are, your children, your friends, ready to do Your
- 5:31will shape us, lead us, transform us to be your Kingdom
- 5:36people. We pray this in the
- 5:38transformational name of Jesus, Amen.
