- 0:05Speaker 1: Cardinal Territory is presented by Fox One.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Hi, what's up. I'm your host, Katie Wu. Welcome back,
- 0:11Speaker 2: indeed to Cardinal Territory. I am fresh off the NLCS,
- 0:16Speaker 2: in which I saw probably the greatest thing ever Shoho Tani.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Three homers, six shutty, ten punch outs to clinch the
- 0:24Speaker 2: National League pennant was absurd, even for Otani standards. And look,
- 0:30Speaker 2: I'm sure Cardinals fans have some maybe a little Dodger's fatigue.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I think that's probably actually true for all twenty nine
- 0:36Speaker 2: fan bases, not in LA, but from a baseball perspective,
- 0:41Speaker 2: just a fan of the game, that performance from Shoho
- 0:44Speaker 2: Tani in Game four was absurd.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I don't really think I still have the words for it.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I just am so thankful to have been there in
- 0:51Speaker 2: the stadium for what is arguably, I actually don't really
- 0:55Speaker 2: think it's an argument probably the greatest postseason performance we
- 0:58Speaker 2: will see of all time.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I mean, just insane.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Anyway, very thankful to have been a small part of
- 1:04Speaker 2: the coverage there for the athletic But let's get back
- 1:07Speaker 2: to reality.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Not much going on.
- 1:10Speaker 2: In Cardinals land here as we sit in the middle
- 1:13Speaker 2: of October, which is to be accepted. But we'll do
- 1:15Speaker 2: a quick recap as to where things currently stand anyway,
- 1:18Speaker 2: starting with number four. Not a lot of traction on
- 1:22Speaker 2: the bring Yachty or Molina front back to Saint Louis.
- 1:26Speaker 2: In case you missed it, Yachti announced earlier in the
- 1:28Speaker 2: week via Instagram stories that he is opened to MLB
- 1:32Speaker 2: managerial and coaching jobs. This comes perhaps a little earlier
- 1:36Speaker 2: than he first projected.
- 1:37Speaker 1: When we last talked to Yachty.
- 1:38Speaker 2: In Saint Louis, he was thinking maybe another year or
- 1:41Speaker 2: so before he'd be ready. But you know who here
- 1:44Speaker 2: hasn't changed their mind, so he has said that he's ready.
- 1:46Speaker 2: He's opened to any jobs they don't necessarily have to
- 1:48Speaker 2: be in Saint Louis. Yes, as we talked about on
- 1:51Speaker 2: the last episode, the Cardinals have had at least some
- 1:53Speaker 2: preliminary conversations about Yachti potentially keyword potentially joining the Cardinals
- 1:59Speaker 2: coaching staff, but again, no major traction on that front
- 2:02Speaker 2: right now. The Cardinals are still finalizing their Major League
- 2:06Speaker 2: coaching staff under manager Ali Marmal, but I personally would
- 2:10Speaker 2: not expect too many, if any changes at all there.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I think the Cardinals are well equipped to run it
- 2:15Speaker 2: back with the same coaching staff from twenty twenty five.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Hein Bloom has said that.
- 2:19Speaker 2: He looks to be adding more than subtracting, so maybe
- 2:22Speaker 2: that's something there. Other than that, though, I haven't heard
- 2:26Speaker 2: too much about any real coaching changes that could change again.
- 2:29Speaker 2: But as we sit here in middle of October, just
- 2:31Speaker 2: three weeks removed from the season, I wouldn't expect a
- 2:34Speaker 2: huge turnover in the coaching department, at least at the
- 2:37Speaker 2: major league level. Speaking to managers, however, a lot of
- 2:43Speaker 2: manager news this week, maybe not necessarily correlating with the
- 2:46Speaker 2: Cardinals themselves, but with several people with significant ties to
- 2:50Speaker 2: the organization.
- 2:51Speaker 1: So let's break all.
- 2:53Speaker 2: The Mic Schiltz stuff down, the albatpool stuff down right
- 2:57Speaker 2: into our DraftKings segment. Let's just do that now, all right,
- 3:08Speaker 2: for the second consecutive week. This is our Draft Kings
- 3:11Speaker 2: person or people spotlight, not players, will be highlighting some
- 3:15Speaker 2: prominent names here in Major League Baseball.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Let's start with number five.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Albert Poohles is still the front runner for the Angels
- 3:23Speaker 2: in this manager carousel around Major League Baseball, but reported
- 3:27Speaker 2: interest with other teams has started. As we reported in
- 3:29Speaker 2: the Athletic. A couple of weeks ago, Albert did meet
- 3:32Speaker 2: with Angels GM Perry Minus in in Clayton right here,
- 3:35Speaker 2: right before his foundation held an event in Saint Louis.
- 3:38Speaker 1: This is maybe about a week two weeks ago.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Poohles remains Angels owner already Morino's top choice, but other candidates,
- 3:46Speaker 2: including former MLB veteran Tory Hunter, They're still in consideration.
- 3:50Speaker 2: The two other teams that have emerged and have been
- 3:52Speaker 2: reportedly linked to Albert Poohles as their manager candidate, the
- 3:56Speaker 2: Baltimore Orioles and the San Diego Padres. Now, hmm, why
- 4:01Speaker 2: are the Potters in the mix? Well, the whole reason
- 4:03Speaker 2: the Podres are even in consideration is because their former manager,
- 4:06Speaker 2: Cardinal's former manager Mike Shilt, elected to retire this week,
- 4:10Speaker 2: a very surprising decision, to say the least. San Diego
- 4:14Speaker 2: was a two time playoff team under Shilt one ninety
- 4:16Speaker 2: games again, and this, of course is the second time
- 4:18Speaker 2: Mike Shilt was dismissed under surprising circumstances.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Certainly, we are all aware.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Of the philosophical differences leading to his dismissal as the
- 4:26Speaker 2: Cardinals manager in twenty twenty one this one as reported
- 4:30Speaker 2: by countless San Diego media. They've done a great job
- 4:32Speaker 2: covering this was Mike Shult's decision. He made the decision
- 4:35Speaker 2: to step away for personal health reasons. He's I believe
- 4:39Speaker 2: the term used, was retired from this job, has no
- 4:42Speaker 2: plans to return to Major League Baseball anytime soon, but
- 4:45Speaker 2: did not rule it out. This sounded like it was,
- 4:48Speaker 2: you know, his decision to step away, and that kind
- 4:51Speaker 2: of ubstanti for Padres general manager Aj Preller, who was
- 4:55Speaker 2: entering his own final year of his contract and now
- 4:57Speaker 2: must hire another manager.
- 4:59Speaker 1: But Cardinals fans don't really care about that.
- 5:02Speaker 2: What you guys care about is probably the big story
- 5:05Speaker 2: that was out in the San Diego Union Tribune by
- 5:07Speaker 2: Padres beat writer Kevin Ace, who did a fantastic job,
- 5:10Speaker 2: who reported some friction between the Padres coaching staff and
- 5:14Speaker 2: Mike Shilt and the Padre's front office and Mike Shildt.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I'll preface with this, I can only speak to what
- 5:20Speaker 1: I know, and I am not in San Diego. Obviously.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I had one season working with Shildt as the manager
- 5:24Speaker 2: of the Cardinals. Was my first season in which there
- 5:27Speaker 2: was zero clubhouse access due to COVID restrictions, and I
- 5:30Speaker 2: was really regulated to Zoom's phone calls and brief on
- 5:33Speaker 2: field interactions with everybody that year, including Mike Shilt. There
- 5:38Speaker 2: are things about the Cardinals organization that we know, just
- 5:43Speaker 2: whether we're fans, whether media, whether we work in it.
- 5:46Speaker 1: The same as.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Cardinals, sometimes to a fault, are a very loyal organization.
- 5:51Speaker 2: They consistently promote internally, they promote within, they really respect
- 5:56Speaker 2: their tradition. None of these things are bad things by
- 5:58Speaker 2: any means, but it could lead or at least be
- 6:01Speaker 2: an explanation as to why things never really got out
- 6:05Speaker 2: when John Mozaellack fired Mike Shilt citing philosophical differences. And
- 6:09Speaker 2: I'm not saying that the Padres organization is not loyal,
- 6:12Speaker 2: is not you know, meant like has not have their
- 6:17Speaker 2: own issues, right, But I am saying that there's a
- 6:19Speaker 2: lot of protection here in Saint Louis. And my read
- 6:24Speaker 2: on the situation, and this was just my speculation, was
- 6:27Speaker 2: always that John Mozellack saying philosophical differences was his way
- 6:31Speaker 2: of saying, I'm not elaborating on anything else. Out of
- 6:34Speaker 2: protection for everybody, out of protection for the organization, out
- 6:38Speaker 2: of protection for Mike Shilt, out of protection for myself.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Say what do you want about Mo? And yes, Cardinals fans,
- 6:43Speaker 2: we will be talking about him going forward.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Don't worry.
- 6:46Speaker 2: He was very, very loyal and very dedicated to upholding
- 6:51Speaker 2: the reputation of the Saint Louis Cardinals. From a business
- 6:54Speaker 2: and operation standpoint, there were for a professional sports organization,
- 6:59Speaker 2: knock on wood, not a lot of drama off the fields,
- 7:03Speaker 2: and that cannot be said if you look around the
- 7:04Speaker 2: league to many other organizations. I think Moe really did
- 7:07Speaker 2: his job in terms of protecting his employees.
- 7:09Speaker 1: So maybe that's.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Why details very limited details about why Mike Shult was
- 7:14Speaker 2: really fired was really fired have actually transpired and come
- 7:17Speaker 2: out from the Saint Louis side.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Mike Shilt had responded.
- 7:21Speaker 2: If you have not read the article about his departure
- 7:24Speaker 2: in the Union Tribune, I encourage you to.
- 7:27Speaker 1: He responded to all the allegations.
- 7:28Speaker 2: They will say the allegations there were not said by
- 7:31Speaker 2: anyone on the record.
- 7:32Speaker 1: That doesn't mean that they're not true.
- 7:34Speaker 2: It was just, you know, here's what happened in San Diego,
- 7:37Speaker 2: or what a reporter found out. Here is how the
- 7:39Speaker 2: managers responding to it. I personally can't say if that's
- 7:42Speaker 2: tied into why he was let go in Saint Louis,
- 7:44Speaker 2: because I can only report on what I know, and
- 7:46Speaker 2: what I know is that it always felt like there
- 7:48Speaker 2: was some protection from everybody involved. That I'm not saying
- 7:51Speaker 2: one side was more perfect than the other. It just
- 7:53Speaker 2: felt like when the Cardinals decided to move on so
- 7:56Speaker 2: quickly from Mike Schildt, it just felt like they were
- 7:58Speaker 2: protecting everybody. So maybe more details will come out, maybe not,
- 8:03Speaker 2: I will say, and I think we can all agree
- 8:04Speaker 2: with this, no matter how you feel about Olie Marmel
- 8:07Speaker 2: Mike schiltz sudden firing in the midst of a very
- 8:10Speaker 2: successful playoff run they won seventeen street. He was a
- 8:13Speaker 2: Manager of the Year finalist one Manager of the Year
- 8:15Speaker 2: in twenty nineteen.
- 8:16Speaker 1: All the things you guys already know did not help.
- 8:20Speaker 2: I think the segue between shilt and Marvel, and I
- 8:23Speaker 2: think Allie actually still wears a lot of, in my opinion,
- 8:27Speaker 2: unfair bias because of the way the Schiltz situation was handled.
- 8:31Speaker 2: But I still think the Cardinals organization tried to handle
- 8:33Speaker 2: it in a way that invited maybe a lot of speculation,
- 8:37Speaker 2: but certainly didn't bring a lot of drama, and we
- 8:39Speaker 2: are seeing a lot of drama unroll in San Diego.
- 8:42Speaker 1: So that's my take on it. All right.
- 8:45Speaker 2: I believe eight teams still are looking for managers. We
- 8:49Speaker 2: know that our palace Gift Schumacher will take over the Rangers.
- 8:51Speaker 1: That is official. He's already underway.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Another Saint Louis and native has emerged as a top
- 8:56Speaker 2: candidate for San Francisco. The University of Tennis baseball coach
- 9:00Speaker 2: Tony Botello, who won an award at the Saint Louis
- 9:03Speaker 2: Baseball Writer's Dinner last year, by the way, has emerged
- 9:06Speaker 2: according to the Athletics Ken Rosenthalberg really and Andy Baggerley
- 9:09Speaker 2: as the front runner in San Francisco to take over
- 9:12Speaker 2: their open manager job. That would be an unprecedented higher
- 9:16Speaker 2: He is no professional sports experience, no professional baseball experience.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Obviously a very successful coach in the University of Tennessee
- 9:24Speaker 2: won a national championship with them. But it would be
- 9:27Speaker 2: a very very unorthodox hire for president Baseball Operations.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Buster Posey out there. So we'll see a lot of
- 9:34Speaker 1: Saint Louis traction here with the manager carousel.
- 9:37Speaker 2: But not necessarily for the Saint Louis Cardinals spot, because
- 9:41Speaker 2: as we know all your myne while coming back in
- 9:42Speaker 2: twenty twenty.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Six, we will again see what his coaching staff looks like.
- 9:46Speaker 2: I'd expect some finality maybe by the time the World
- 9:50Speaker 2: Series ends. So that's what we got here for our
- 9:55Speaker 2: weekly manager update. One quick disclaimer from our friends at DraftKings,
- 10:00Speaker 2: and we'll get right into some minor injury updates.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Gambling problem called one eight hundred. Gambler must be eighteen
- 10:07Speaker 3: and over. Agent eligibility restrictions vary by jurisdiction. Void work prohibited,
- 10:11Speaker 3: new customers only, minimum five dollars deposit. Bonus picks expire

- 10:16Speaker 3: additional terms and responsible gaming resources seepicksix dot DraftKings dot com,
- 10:21Speaker 3: slash promos.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Okay, so on.
- 10:25Speaker 2: For Friday, I believe we had a quick update from
- 10:27Speaker 2: the Saint Louis Cardinals with some injury updates. I'll go
- 10:30Speaker 2: ahead and read them. Surgery updates for three players, Brendan Donovan,
- 10:34Speaker 2: Yvon Herrera, and Lars new Bar One. We knew, we
- 10:38Speaker 2: knew Eyvon Herrera was going to get surgery heading into
- 10:40Speaker 2: the season. He had a right elbow scope to remove
- 10:43Speaker 2: bone spurring on October fifteenth.
- 10:45Speaker 1: This was the plan. He disclosed it at the end
- 10:46Speaker 1: of the season. The idea is.
- 10:48Speaker 2: For him to fix some of those bone spurs and
- 10:50Speaker 2: his throwing elbow. He'll be back up within four to
- 10:53Speaker 2: six weeks and throwing. The Cardinals have a throwing program
- 10:56Speaker 2: and an off season program set for Herrera.
- 10:58Speaker 1: The plan is for him to catch roughly sixty to
- 11:01Speaker 1: maybe eighty games next year, and.
- 11:03Speaker 2: They'll split the workload between whatever catcher, whether that's Jimmy
- 11:06Speaker 2: Crooks or Pedro Pas. Next year, Yvon Herrera will not
- 11:09Speaker 2: be needed to be a starting catcher for the Cardinals,
- 11:12Speaker 2: where he's looking at one hundred and twenty games. The
- 11:14Speaker 2: idea for Herrera to catch roughly sixty or so seventy games.
- 11:18Speaker 2: It's just free up some roster flexibility. It didn't do
- 11:22Speaker 2: the Cardinals any good to have Herrera as their sole
- 11:27Speaker 2: a designated hitter. Really clogged up the roster, and we
- 11:30Speaker 2: know that that is a top priority for hine Bloom
- 11:32Speaker 2: going into twenty twenty six is to have less of
- 11:34Speaker 2: a rigid roster. Brendan Donovan sports hernia repair he underwent
- 11:38Speaker 2: that on October seventh.
- 11:40Speaker 1: He spent most of the second half injured with the groin.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Sports hernia and groin injuries are not exactly the same,
- 11:45Speaker 2: but not necessarily surprised to see his name there.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And the new bar.
- 11:49Speaker 2: He had surgery on both of his heels to shave
- 11:51Speaker 2: down Haglin's deformities that also went down on October seventh.
- 11:54Speaker 2: He'll be a walking boot for at least a couple
- 11:56Speaker 2: of weeks. Return to play determination have not yet been
- 12:00Speaker 2: officially announced, so we do not yet know the prognosis
- 12:04Speaker 2: for any of these except Herreras, because it was already
- 12:07Speaker 2: disclosed that he would not have the impact any impact
- 12:11Speaker 2: at the start of the season. Mason Wynn, of course,
- 12:13Speaker 2: we knew he underwent surgery for that right meniscus tear
- 12:17Speaker 2: very early after the season ended. His timetable is not impacted,
- 12:20Speaker 2: so we will wait further diagnosis on Brendan Donovan and
- 12:24Speaker 2: Lar's newbar. I am no doctor, I am no expert,
- 12:28Speaker 2: so I'm not going to even offer a timetable because
- 12:31Speaker 2: I simply don't know. What I do know is that,
- 12:33Speaker 2: regardless of injury situations, I would expect Brendan Donovan and
- 12:37Speaker 2: Lar's newpar to be heavily tied into trade discussions for
- 12:41Speaker 2: the Cardinals this year, and it's early. It's a little
- 12:44Speaker 2: too early to be talking about roster changes here in
- 12:46Speaker 2: Saint Louis, but we'd liveally have nothing else to talk about,
- 12:48Speaker 2: so let's go for it.
- 12:50Speaker 1: As we know, the Cardinals have so many.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Lefties in their twenty six man roster, and I would
- 12:58Speaker 2: imagine it is not on high Bloom's perfect world to
- 13:02Speaker 2: roll out the exact same roster as last year, because
- 13:04Speaker 2: it was a flawed roster. It was very redundant and
- 13:06Speaker 2: there were a lot of positional redundancy's positional clogs. However
- 13:10Speaker 2: you want to say it. Donovan and new Bar and
- 13:13Speaker 2: maybe this will be interesting to monitor going into the
- 13:15Speaker 2: seat or going into the off season with their recovery times.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Are the players that are going to be entering their
- 13:21Speaker 2: second year of arbitration, and we already know that the
- 13:23Speaker 2: Cardinal's competitive window looks to be past twenty twenty seven,
- 13:27Speaker 2: both Donovan and Newbar will be free agents. Then would
- 13:31Speaker 2: that put them in trade considerations? I would expect maybe,
- 13:35Speaker 2: especially in Donovan's case, because he is coming off a
- 13:37Speaker 2: peak career year, and yes there were some injuries in
- 13:40Speaker 2: the second half, but there was a ton of interest
- 13:43Speaker 2: in him in the trade deadline, just not necessarily something
- 13:46Speaker 2: where the Cardinals were overwhelmed that would make a move
- 13:48Speaker 2: right now. So we'll wait for further prognosis on their
- 13:51Speaker 2: injuries and their surgery recovery time. But it would not
- 13:53Speaker 2: surprise me at all to hear Brendan Donovan and Lars.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Newbar in trade discussions.
- 13:57Speaker 2: I also know the Cardinals are going to look to
- 13:59Speaker 2: maybe dippy up their catching depth.
- 14:00Speaker 1: I would not expect Von Herrera to be in those conversations.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Maybe we're looking at a Pedro Pajaz instead, because again
- 14:06Speaker 2: goes back to positional redundancy and having too many guys
- 14:09Speaker 2: in one position and not nearly as many guys and
- 14:11Speaker 2: other positions. So you're looking at the left handed bats
- 14:14Speaker 2: and the catching depth being the two very early position
- 14:17Speaker 2: areas to monitor. Whenever this off season starts, the GM
- 14:20Speaker 2: meetings are scheduled for.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Hold on.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Game seven of the World Series if needed, will be
- 14:27Speaker 2: October thirty first, Happy Halloween to you all, and then
- 14:30Speaker 2: the GM Meetings, the unofficial starting point of the off
- 14:33Speaker 2: season is scheduled to begin November tenth in Las Vegas,
- 14:37Speaker 2: so we will have a better understanding on what that
- 14:39Speaker 2: will look like the Cardinals off season plans, what we're
- 14:42Speaker 2: going to see under Hein Bloom's first real winter around then.
- 14:46Speaker 2: So that's my very early prediction, just based on what
- 14:48Speaker 2: we briefly discussed the end of the season.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Expect trade circulation.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Around Donovan and new bar maybe some Burlison, maybe some Gorman,
- 14:56Speaker 2: not so much Herrera, and we'll see if these injury
- 14:59Speaker 2: timetables really impact anything. Okay, let's take a quick message
- 15:04Speaker 2: from our sponsor today here at me Undis, and then
- 15:08Speaker 2: we'll end this episode real quick.
- 15:10Speaker 4: This is for everyone listening right now. What are you
- 15:13Speaker 4: wearing right now? And why isn't it me Undies Kraft.
- 15:18Speaker 4: It is time for everyone to upgrade and get that
- 15:20Speaker 4: super soft micro Modal glory so good that you don't
- 15:26Speaker 4: want to take it off.
- 15:27Speaker 5: The reason I'm stone facing you is because that's how
- 15:31Speaker 5: soft they are. It's ridiculous, Like I feel, I don't
- 15:34Speaker 5: even understand what kind of material it is. It's got
- 15:37Speaker 5: to be something space age for your butt.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Signature super Soft micro Modal fabric, breathable, stretchy, unbelievably cozy,
- 15:47Speaker 4: and now you can even get glow in the dark
- 15:50Speaker 4: part of the Halloween line right now as a listener

- 16:10Speaker 4: made for fall all right.
- 16:13Speaker 2: I'm enjoying a few days off before heading to the
- 16:16Speaker 2: World Series, which I'm super excited about.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I'll again be helping out with the athletics coverage there.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Yeah, so we'll again have one episode next week, and
- 16:25Speaker 2: then we will have some clarity on the podcast, some
- 16:30Speaker 2: big Cardinal Territory news coming up around after the end
- 16:32Speaker 2: of the month, after the postseason ends, that I'm really
- 16:34Speaker 2: excited to share with you all, And then before we know.
- 16:37Speaker 1: It will be right into the off season.
- 16:39Speaker 2: So I know these episodes definitely have a lot of
- 16:41Speaker 2: substance in them. I would expect that to change over
- 16:45Speaker 2: the course of the off season. I really do believe
- 16:47Speaker 2: we're not going to see it right now, because again,
- 16:48Speaker 2: the postseason is still coming, still going on. I do
- 16:52Speaker 2: think the Cardinals will have their busiest off season that
- 16:55Speaker 2: we've seen in a while. It might not be the
- 16:56Speaker 2: most exciting in terms of acquiring talent, so there will
- 17:00Speaker 2: be transactions and the first area that I'm looking at
- 17:03Speaker 2: GM meetings.
- 17:04Speaker 1: The second area the non tender deadline, which.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Is shortly after I would expect to see some significant
