Transcript
- 0:00Katie: I am one of the moms who I don't thoroughly enjoy mothering at home.
- 0:05Katie: I get overwhelmed because there's so much to do.
- 0:08Katie: There's like there's the laundry, there's the dishes, and my kids feel it too.
- 0:12Katie: If I'm trying to do laundry while also like be with them, you know, I work full time.
- 0:17Katie: So my time with them is like it's it's very limited, and I try to protect it as much as I can.
- 0:24Katie: So if I'm with my kids, I want to be with my kids.
- 0:27Katie: And for me, that means getting out of my house because that's where I can be most attentive to them and to like really like sit in like in their joy and just like not be home.
- 0:37Katie: And for some moms, it's the opposite.
- 0:39Katie: Getting out of the house is really, really stressful.
- 0:41Katie: I have a lot of friends where getting out of the house is very stressful for them.
- 0:45Katie: And then there's so much to think about as a mom and trying to plan, well, where do I even bring my kids?
- 0:52Katie: And even myself, I found we get into the same rhythm.
- 0:55Katie: Like, all right, we're gonna go to Rang Pond, we're gonna go to the wildlife.
- 0:58Katie: Like, we have our spots, right?
- 0:59Katie: Pineland Farms.
- 1:00Katie: Like we have our three or four spots and we go all the time.
- 1:02Katie: I was talking to my husband about this and about wanting to bring them to even more new places, but it's like so much work to try to find out if something's kid friendly and how I wish there was somewhere that I could just log on to see all the things made.
- 1:16Katie: I came up with a few day plans and posted them, and very, very quickly it grew to like a thousand followers in less than it was like two weeks.
- 1:24Katie: And I was like, oh wow, like other people like this too.
- 1:27Katie: And so I just started creating it in my spare time, which is not much.
- 1:32Katie: And now I'm like just really, really excited about it.

- 3:45Angela: Hi Katie, welcome to my main birth.
- 3:49Angela: Hi.
- 3:50Angela: So to get started, would you share a little bit about you and your family?
- 3:55Katie: Sure.
- 3:56Katie: So my name's Katie, and I grew up in Maine.
- 3:58Katie: I grew up in the Wells Agunqua area, and I met my husband out in Colorado actually.
- 4:05Katie: We were both living there in our 20s, but he is from Portland.
- 4:08Katie: So we're both from Maine, and we both moved out there because of the same mutual friend.
- 4:14Katie: So, you know, that's how we got to know each other.
- 4:17Katie: And then I decided that I wanted to stop being a ski bum and go to law school, which was an interesting transition for everyone who knew me.
- 4:26Katie: And I got into law school and ended up going to uh UNH in New Hampshire.
- 4:32Katie: And so we moved back to the New England area, lived there for a few years while I was in law school, and then relocated back to Maine after graduation.
- 4:43Katie: So that's us.
- 4:44Katie: So we have two kids.
- 4:46Katie: Our son McKinley is about to turn three, and Joan is about to turn one.
- 4:51Katie: They are 23 months apart, exactly.
- 4:53Katie: So yeah, that's that's our family.
- 4:56Katie: We have a little dog, uh Sadie, as well.
- 4:58Katie: She joins us uh on some of our adventures.
- 5:01Angela: Cool.
- 5:01Angela: So now jumping into your birth stories, would you start by sharing a little bit about how you found out you're pregnant for the first time and what your thoughts were in choosing your care?
- 5:13Katie: Yeah, so I have endometriosis, and I actually found that out late, like right before I actually got pregnant with my first.
- 5:21Katie: So I was having a lot of like valve like issues, like really bad stomach pain, and I was told I had like IBS for years.
- 5:29Katie: And then I found out, oh, it's endometriosis.
- 5:33Katie: I had this huge cyst, and I had ovarian torsion, and that's how it all kind of came out.
- 5:39Katie: And then I had surgery and they found the endometriosis, and I had I had great periods.
- 5:45Katie: I know I'm like really lucky that way, so I never thought it was endometriosis, and no one brought it up until my gynecologist was saying, you know, I think all these symptoms could be endometriosis, plus with the cysts, we're gonna go in anyways, and we'll take it all out.
- 5:58Katie: And so I was really lucky in that way, and that I actually had surgery right before uh we were ready to have children.
- 6:07Katie: So the timing worked out really well for me.
- 6:10Katie: And so I had that surgery around November, and then my first cycle afterwards, I got pregnant with my son.
- 6:19Katie: And so, yes, it was really like serendipitous and very quick.
- 6:24Katie: Um, and I'm a crazy tester, so I was testing from way too early that you could ever test pregnant.
- 6:33Katie: Uh, I think it's just the way my kind of anxiety like works, and so I was testing from the beginning.
- 6:40Katie: So I knew like that I was showing my husband these lines.
- 6:42Katie: He's like, I don't care until it's like truly pink, and then I'll believe you.
- 6:46Katie: So there was like super faint, and then I was like, I'm pregnant.
- 6:50Katie: He's like, I can't see anything.
- 6:53Katie: Uh so yeah, so there was no like cute surprise situation.
- 6:58Katie: It was like I knew I was pregnant basically the second I could have ever known I was pregnant, and uh then eventually my husband believed me.
- 7:06Angela: So oh my gosh, that's funny.
- 7:08Angela: So how old were you at this point?
- 7:11Katie: Oh my gosh, now I have to do math.
- 7:13Katie: I'm so bad at dates and times, it's definitely one of my weaknesses.
- 7:16Katie: I was 30, 30.
- 7:21Katie: I think I was 30, 30 and 31.
- 7:23Katie: Yes, I had my son when I was 32.
- 7:25Katie: So yes, 31 years old.
- 7:27Angela: Awesome.
- 7:27Angela: Yeah.
- 7:28Angela: So now what were your thoughts in choosing your care?
- 7:30Angela: Like, had you given much consideration to how you might want a birth, and like how did maybe some of the stories that you might have heard when you were younger kind of play into like that decision making?
- 7:41Katie: Yeah, so I knew pretty early that I did not want an epidural.
- 7:47Katie: I was somebody who even going to the dentist as a child and getting my mouth numb was an ordeal for me.
- 7:58Katie: I just I'm very go with the flow, very like easygoing, but I also have learned as an adult and especially as a mom, learned a lot about myself.
- 8:07Katie: And I do like to be in control of my own body.
- 8:12Katie: That's like one thing that's very important to me.
- 8:15Katie: And so I knew right away I didn't want to not be able to walk or have to rely on others, I think, to move.
- 8:23Katie: Or I just I wanted that control and I knew that pretty early.
- 8:27Katie: So then I went into like master research mode, which is how I like I said, how I handle my own anxieties and like my personality.
- 8:38Katie: So I listened to thousands of birth uh podcasts, mostly because to me, I wanted to know like the whole wide range of things that could possibly happen.
- 8:49Katie: And I mean, you can't possibly even know that range.
- 8:52Katie: It's like that's one thing I feel like I have learned is like there's so much that could happen.
- 8:57Katie: Um, and so I started listening to all these podcasts and doing research on my own online, and then eventually reached out to a doula uh to have some support there.
- 9:07Katie: So I didn't have to rely solely on my husband because I knew he'd be very uh nervous.
- 9:12Katie: So yeah.
- 9:14Angela: Yeah.
- 9:15Angela: Do you care to share who which doula that you worked with?
- 9:18Katie: Yeah.
- 9:18Katie: Yep.
- 9:19Katie: So I um was with main doula's and Natalie was so that you have two.
- 9:25Katie: If you if you choose main doulas, you get two doulas.
- 9:27Katie: Um, and Natalie was our prime, and then we had um a wonderful girl named Rosie who was who ended up attending our birth because Natalie was out.
- 9:36Katie: And uh so that yes, that's who we chose um for our doula care.
- 9:40Angela: Cool.
- 9:41Angela: So how did that feel?
- 9:42Angela: Just having then like after like choosing your doula and kind of getting into your like early pregnancy as you're like preparing for birth and how are your appointments looking with your doctor?
- 9:51Angela: Yeah, didn't which kind of path did you choose?
- 9:53Angela: Like as far as that goes, too.
- 9:55Katie: Yeah, so I was at Intermed and I had Dr.
- 9:57Katie: Popol, who I absolutely adore because she's the one who found my endometriosis.
- 10:02Katie: She like believed in me.
- 10:03Katie: She was the first one who like really listened to my concerns.
- 10:06Katie: I mean, I think I had one or two appointments with her before she was like, No, you have endometriosis.
- 10:12Katie: Um, so she was like right off the bat looking out for me.
- 10:15Katie: Um, first doctor I felt like that truly listened.
- 10:18Katie: And so I was very comfortable with her and comfortable with Intermed after having my surgery.
- 10:24Katie: I could have gone the home birth route, but my husband was not.
- 10:30Katie: He is very much wanted to be at a hospital just in case anything went wrong.
- 10:34Katie: And I knew if I was going to be at a hospital, I wanted to be at main med somewhere with the NICU and support.
- 10:40Katie: So that was an easy choice for me.
- 10:42Katie: If we're gonna do hospital, then we're gonna go to main med.
- 10:44Katie: But if we're gonna be at a hospital, I'm gonna have a doula.
- 10:46Katie: And so that was how we balanced those competing interests.
- 10:51Katie: And then as far as just birth, like getting ready for birth, like I said, really was listening to all those stories.
- 10:59Katie: It just brought me a lot of ease to know that you can't control the situation and so many things can happen.
- 11:05Katie: And the idea that you're not gonna know until it's over, and the best thing you can do is just talk about what you want and have that support there while you're preparing, so that if you do have the choice, and if you know, which you do most of the time, that everybody in the room kind of knows what you're looking for.
- 11:26Katie: And so just having those my Dr.
- 11:29Katie: Popal was really supportive of the whole thing and everything that I wanted.
- 11:33Katie: There was zero pushback on any of the choices I was making as far as you know, my birth plan, um, and nobody like snubbed their nose at you know, birth plan.
- 11:42Katie: And uh, so it was it was really a good experience, and then just so much walking, so much walking and curb walking and spinning babies and all of that.
- 11:52Katie: I mean, I didn't start that till the end.
- 11:54Katie: Both my babies are summer babies, so August and July, so a lot of floating.
- 11:59Katie: We got like a really cheap pool off of Amazon, and I think I just like floated in that thing.
- 12:05Katie: I got like a big avocado float with the middle missing.
- 12:08Katie: Just like put my belly in there, and I'd say that was probably the biggest birth prep I did was just sitting in that pool, so in the summer heat.
- 12:17Angela: But yeah, that can be so relaxing to just like have that weightlessness of the water being in the water, yeah, during those late pregnancy days.
- 12:26Katie: Yeah.
- 12:26Katie: Oh, and acupuncture, I forgot.
- 12:28Katie: I went to acupuncture for my first, and because I had a lot more time with when I didn't have a toddler during pregnancy, so I did.
- 12:34Katie: I did do the acupuncture, and that was a huge help.
- 12:37Katie: On um then I started going at the early for nausea and then kept going for you know the back pain and everything near the end.
- 12:46Angela: Did you find that helpful?
- 12:48Katie: Yes, I did.
- 12:49Katie: You know, it's even if it's honestly 20 to 30 minutes or longer some days of just sitting in that chair and relaxing and having someone take care of you is worth, you know, every penny, honestly.
- 13:03Katie: And then then I I would go home with some nausea patches, which did help a lot.
- 13:07Katie: I could I could tell a difference with those for sure.
- 13:11Angela: Awesome.
- 13:11Angela: Yeah, that's really interesting.
- 13:13Angela: And I love what you said about just like listening to all of the different birth stories to just to try to get an idea of all of the different ways that it could possibly go and to just be aware of more things so that when you're in the birth process yourself, when things come up, you're like, oh, I've heard of that before at least, you know, and you have some idea of how you feel about it, you know, so you can yeah, like you know, make your goals, but then also be flexible.
- 13:36Katie: Exactly.
- 13:37Katie: You know, I didn't want the surprise of hearing about something for the first time while I was in the room and just having all those things in my head being like, well, what would I do maybe in that situation?
- 13:47Katie: And you know, obviously you can't hold everything in your brain, but there's like that slight recall I was hoping would come out to say, Oh, I've heard of that, and that would bring me some comfort, was my thought.
- 14:00Angela: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:01Angela: So, yeah.
- 14:02Angela: So, how were those final days and then weeks leading up to when your labor started looking for you?
- 14:06Angela: And and how was your birth?
- 14:08Katie: Yeah, so for my first pregnancy, I am one of those lucky women who experience a ton of prodomal labor.
- 14:16Katie: So I was in like fake labor, I felt like for weeks.
- 14:20Katie: I'd wake up, I'd go to the tub, I feel like I would labor for a few hours, and then it'd all die.
- 14:26Katie: So very little sleep, uh, a lot of contractions, and I think I lost my mucus plug like five times.
- 14:33Katie: I was like, it kept up regenerating and be like, this is it, this is it, and then no.
- 14:37Katie: So I had that happen a ton, and then you know, having the doula was really helpful because I would call them, be like, I, you know, what's happening?
- 14:45Katie: And then we went into a different position because it's happening again, and we did kind of a sideline release, and then that's when like labor really kicked in.
- 14:56Katie: So there was like another day.
- 14:57Katie: I remember my husband was out on the deck, he was cooking some food, cooking sloppy joes.
- 15:02Katie: I remember this because we have never once made sloppy joes at our house, and today he was having sloppy joes.
- 15:08Katie: And he was on the phone with his dad and saying, Oh, well, I, you know, because they were gonna take the dog.
- 15:15Katie: So he was like, How's tonight going?
- 15:16Katie: Like, what's it looking like?
- 15:18Katie: And he said, Oh, it's not gonna happen today.
- 15:20Katie: I don't think it's gonna happen today.
- 15:22Katie: And I I had just gone taken a shower and come out, and I was like, No, I think it's happening right now.
- 15:26Katie: And he's like, What do you?
- 15:27Katie: And this has happened already, you know, a few times because of the padromal labor.
- 15:31Katie: And so he's like, I think I'll believe it in a little while.
- 15:34Katie: And so he continues cooking his sloppy doughs, and I'm like walking around the house, and I come out and I could barely talk at this point.
- 15:43Katie: So I knew it was like real.
- 15:44Katie: I was like, wait, no, this is real.
- 15:45Katie: And so I went to call the doula and I couldn't really speak, and so he had to talk to her, and she's like, Do you want me to come over?
- 15:53Katie: Because my original plan was just labor at home for as long as possible.
- 15:57Katie: And I immediately was like, No, we're going to the hospital.
- 16:01Katie: And my husband's like, No, I think you want to stay home because he was trying to be like really supportive of what I wanted.
- 16:07Katie: And I was like, No, we're going to the hospital right now.
- 16:10Katie: And he was like, Um, okay, I think you can meet us at the hospital.
- 16:14Katie: So that's kind of how labor started.
- 16:18Katie: And uh then we got into the car, so we live in New Gloucester, so it's about uh, you know, a little a 30, 35-minute drive to uh the um Portland.
- 16:30Katie: And so we got in the car.
- 16:33Katie: It was probably that all started I'd say like 5 or 6 p.m.
- 16:38Katie: And it was around like eight o'clock when I said no, we're going to the hospital.
- 16:43Katie: So it had been a few hours at home of is this real?
- 16:46Katie: Is this not real?
- 16:47Katie: And then very quickly being like, no, we have to go.
- 16:51Katie: And so we got into the car, we headed to the hospital.
- 16:55Katie: I had already been three centimeters dilated for like a week or two at that point.
- 17:01Katie: And so when we got there, first of all, I didn't call, and you know you're supposed to call, I guess, on your way in.
- 17:09Katie: So we get in and I'm in labor, and I had some uh like blood.
- 17:14Katie: And so I'm just like standing there and they're asking me a million questions about who I am and what I'm doing there.
- 17:21Katie: And I was like, I'm having a baby, like let me upstairs.
- 17:24Katie: And so that whole thing was that was like one frustrating part of you know the hospital setup, but that's on me, you know.
- 17:32Katie: I didn't call and tell anyone tell anyone I was coming in, kind of forgot the part.
- 17:36Angela: How far along were you at this point?
- 17:37Angela: How many weeks?
- 17:38Katie: Oh, so I was uh just a few days over.
- 17:41Katie: Yeah, so it hadn't been long.
- 17:44Katie: Um yeah, I wasn't you know waiting around uh too long as a first-time mom, which was nice.
- 17:50Katie: Um and then so we got there, we got upstairs, and they checked me and I was only four, and I was like, wait, no, like I've been three for weeks, you know, and so they tried then the the crazy part that started was the IV situation.
- 18:08Katie: I hadn't really wanted an IV, but because I was bleeding, they you know, I I agreed to get the IV because I didn't know what was going on, and so the IV situation was insane.
- 18:22Katie: It took like 25 like different people like pokes, like seven different people.
- 18:28Katie: The ultrasound tech came up and couldn't get it in, and this is all happening during like active labor.
- 18:34Katie: I'm like in and out of the tub, um I'm like all over the place, in and out of the shower, and they were still trying to get this damn IV into my arm.
- 18:43Katie: And so finally, someone when I was in the tub from the like ICU came up and was able to get it in.
- 18:49Katie: And I will say that I think was the hardest part of the whole labor was the darn IV.
- 18:54Katie: That was like a surprising part for me for sure.
- 18:58Angela: That just like kind of brings you out of your like zone, yeah, like even more than just like it being annoying, it's like it's this distraction, like kind of really, and it's like you're in this zone, and then finally once you're done, you're able to get back in the zone, right?
- 19:11Katie: Kind of is that yeah, exactly.
- 19:12Katie: Yeah, it was just like this little annoyance.
- 19:15Katie: Um, you know, in the end, you know, it was good.
- 19:16Katie: I was happy I had it just in case I needed it.
- 19:19Katie: You know, in the end, everything was fine, but um, and so yeah, anyways, we got to the hospital, I'd say around 10, I think it was, by the time we actually got there, and labor went really well.
- 19:32Katie: I was in the shower for most of it.
- 19:34Katie: I started in the tub, then went to the shower.
- 19:37Katie: Um, because the tub that they put us in at May Med, this was before they got new tubs, which they have now.
- 19:43Katie: They were so shallow.
- 19:45Katie: So I remember just being so sad because we have like a little tub at home, you know, it's great for kids, but it doesn't really like cover like your pregnant belly and everything.
- 19:53Katie: So I was like, I'm gonna get to the hospital and get in those big tubs.
- 19:57Katie: And it was still so shallow.
- 19:58Katie: So I remember being really disappointed in the tub situation.
- 20:02Katie: And so I moved to the shower, and they have those uh blow-up chairs that you can sit in in the shower, which was amazing, but we were covering the drain, so then we flooded like the whole birthing sea, and I didn't know.
- 20:17Katie: I mean, I was like in labor, so and uh but everyone apparently was like there was probably like 50 towels in that room when I noticed when it was all over.
- 20:27Katie: We had like flooded the whole thing, and but the great thing is like nobody said anything to me, right?
- 20:32Katie: They just kind of let me do my thing, which was really nice, and I did the intermittent monitoring, so they were just coming in here and there.
- 20:40Katie: The nurses were just so great, and you know, just gave me my space, came in, checked on me, and then would leave.
- 20:48Katie: And then uh I was in the shower and I noticed I was felt different.
- 20:54Katie: Like, you know, now I know I was pushing.
- 20:57Katie: Then I didn't really know I was pushing.
- 20:59Katie: And after like three or four, I was pushes.
- 21:02Katie: I was like, I think he's coming.
- 21:04Katie: And so I was like, he's coming, he's coming.
- 21:06Katie: And they rushed me over to the bed and uh my water broke right when I got to the bed.
- 21:12Katie: So my water hadn't broken yet.
- 21:14Katie: And then my son, I don't know, maybe it was just like the water breaking or something, but he they tested with it, the monitor, the Doppler, and his heart they couldn't really find his heart rate very well.
- 21:28Katie: And I think he was just freaking out because he had just been in this nice like bubble, and then it you know, it it popped and he was losing it a little bit.
- 21:37Angela: And also he's moving down too, so it might have shifted like where his heartbeat was, too.
- 21:41Katie: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:42Katie: So everyone's freaking out because they I haven't been hooked up to the monitor, so they're having a really hard time now finding him.
- 21:50Katie: So they're moving me in all these positions, they're like put me on the bed, and it's just like chaos.
- 21:55Katie: There's like the NICU teams in there, and the you know, the doctors in there.
- 21:59Katie: And I had already been pushing, like kind of not knowing.
- 22:03Katie: So I was like, what?
- 22:04Katie: Like everyone needs to calm down.
- 22:05Katie: Like he's coming right out.
- 22:07Katie: Like, you know, just let me stand back up.
- 22:10Angela: It's lucky.
- 22:10Angela: That's what I was gonna say.
- 22:11Angela: That's like while you were standing, like everything was going and then they're like, lay on your back.
- 22:15Angela: Yeah.
- 22:16Katie: Yeah.
- 22:16Katie: So it got a little messy for a little while.
- 22:19Katie: And I do remember, and I well, I don't remember this.
- 22:21Katie: My husband told me this after.
- 22:23Katie: But everyone was talking and talking and talking.
- 22:25Katie: And apparently at one point I just yelled at everyone to shut up.
- 22:28Katie: And I was like, can one person tell me what they want me to do?
- 22:32Katie: And I don't remember that.
- 22:33Katie: Um, but I was proud of myself afterwards when I found out that I yelled at everyone.
- 22:38Katie: Um, and then the doctor very calmly, she was great.
- 22:43Katie: Dr.
- 22:43Katie: Darren Darren came over and she's like, This is what's happening, you know, this is what we're trying to do.
- 22:48Katie: And I was like, Okay.
- 22:50Katie: And I just said, like, please, nobody, like they had the vacuum out.
- 22:54Katie: It was like this whole scene.
- 22:55Katie: And the vacuum kept popping off.
- 22:57Katie: And I was like, just give me like two minutes.
- 23:00Katie: Like, he's coming.
- 23:01Katie: Like, just like give me two minutes.
- 23:03Katie: And they did.
- 23:03Katie: They were all like great.
- 23:04Katie: They stepped back.
- 23:05Katie: I pushed him out, and all was well, and he was fine, and he had great scores, and like everything was good, but it was just yeah, so there was like a tiny little chaos in there, but it was maybe 15 minutes.
- 23:16Katie: He came out fast, it was like 15 minutes of pushing, and he was out.
- 23:20Katie: Um, and yeah, so it was it was a quick first birth.
- 23:25Katie: I think it was about six hours from the time we got in the hospital.
- 23:29Angela: So wow, that's amazing.
- 23:32Katie: Yeah, so it was a really great first experience, besides like the end.
- 23:36Katie: Um, but definitely was happy with how things turned out.
- 23:41Angela: Yeah.
- 23:42Angela: Oh yeah, good, like that when you're just like really like focusing in on what you need, even if you don't remember that, like that your husband said that you're like, you know, everybody shut up and like give me like a minute here, like so you can figure out, you know, what's going on.
- 23:55Angela: Like everybody's at once, that can be so overwhelming.
- 23:58Angela: And yeah, just that he was able they were able to listen to that and then give you the you know at the time and space that you needed, and then everything was fine.
- 24:06Angela: So, was there a reason for that panic?
- 24:10Katie: I it's just this his heart rate.
- 24:12Katie: I think they just couldn't find a stable heart rate.
- 24:14Katie: It did drop when they picked when they could pick it up again.
- 24:18Katie: It looked really low.
- 24:19Katie: They had then connected me to the monitor, so they did have a little data.
- 24:24Katie: So they were freaking out because of his heart rate.
- 24:27Katie: And in my mind, I was like, he's just suggesting.
- 24:30Katie: I know nothing, right?
- 24:31Katie: I'm not a doctor, but I I felt fine.
- 24:34Katie: I wasn't worried, which was good, and I think I wasn't because I had listened to so many podcasts about all the things that could go wrong, but I didn't see the numbers, right?
- 24:43Katie: Like I'm not staring at the screen, so it was good they were all there.
- 24:46Katie: Um, but even better that they just let me get him out.
- 24:49Angela: Yeah, amazing.
- 24:50Angela: So, how was your immediate postpartum?
- 24:53Katie: It was surprisingly okay.
- 24:55Katie: I was worried just about, I mean, you you have a new baby, right?
- 25:00Katie: You're it's like your first your whole world's changing, and you don't even realize it, you know, everyone tells you that it's gonna change, and then you're like, wow, why how did I have so much time in my life before?
- 25:13Katie: Like, I should have like a Nobel Peace Prize or something for the time that I had just like available to me.
- 25:19Katie: And I my husband was able to take a few weeks off of work, which was great, and then we are very lucky.
- 25:27Katie: My in-laws live about 30 minutes away.
- 25:29Katie: We live in a really wonderful neighborhood with a lot of great neighbors.
- 25:32Katie: My parents are about an hour away, and so we just had a lot of support, and having that village is uh, you know, crucial for us, and it was just really nice to have.
- 25:45Katie: And I was lucky that my son was he's not he wasn't the best sleeper, and he did have like some gut issues and like colic, like he just had issues with dairy and stuff, so I had to deal with that and change my diet, but otherwise, he was a very good baby, so it was really just getting through like the 5 to 8 p.m.
- 26:05Katie: stage and then figuring out what kind of night schedule worked for the two of us so that we had some sleep.
- 26:12Angela: But yeah, yeah, it can be a lot of just trial and error, and like every baby is different too, right?
- 26:19Katie: Right, yeah.
- 26:20Katie: Um, it did, it felt felt really dramatic at the time, but I would say compared to most, our postpartum period was very calm.
- 26:30Katie: So that was that was a good surprise.
- 26:34Angela: Yeah, and what um type of like feeding did you choose to do with him?
- 26:40Katie: Yeah, so we I did breastf I breastfed him um exclusively for like six months, and then we did some combo feeding until a year, and so that posed some struggles, but having the doula, so Rosie came over about I think only a few days after and birth, and we we did some new positions and we like worked out some of his latching issues, and then eventually he did also have I don't remember exactly what it was, but he was getting a blister from the way his mouth was, and so I went back to a lactation consultant and it was quick fix and everything was like good.
- 27:18Katie: You know, breastfeeding is a journey.
- 27:21Katie: I think everyone who's done it will say that.
- 27:23Katie: Like the learning curve feels so steep, even the second time, I'll say.
- 27:27Katie: And then you get into your rhythm and it gets easier.
- 27:32Katie: Um, I was also lucky that you know, I I had I work with some great women and who were older and they had like really good advice.
- 27:40Katie: And I had had some friends who had breastfed before me, and so taking their tips on how to get some extra for a bottle without having to stress about like pumping too much, and you know, okay, Katie, you can sleep for five hours, like it's okay.
- 27:55Katie: Like, take take your rest, like you're not gonna dry up because you took a good five-hour sleep stretch, and just like having that support was great.
- 28:07Angela: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's huge for sure.
- 28:10Katie: Yeah, it took some of that anxiety away.
- 28:13Katie: I mean, it's still really hard.
- 28:15Katie: I'm not saying of course I broke down.
- 28:17Katie: I think like every new mom breaks down here, you know, a few times, and there were definitely some mornings after my husband after my husband went back to work where I went down in the morning and I was like, You're not going to work today.
- 28:30Katie: Like, you need to call out.
- 28:31Katie: Like, this is we need I need to go to bed.
- 28:33Katie: And so there is definitely, you know, some really rough stretches, but um once you we've gotten to our rhythm, it you know, all worked out.
- 28:44Angela: Yeah, yeah, it's so important to just like tune into like when you need a little extra support and like so you can like you know recover because yeah, you really need your sleep.
- 28:53Angela: It's so important.
- 28:55Katie: And I'm so bad at taking that.
- 28:57Katie: I mean, I used to freak out when my mom touched my laundry.
- 29:00Katie: Like, don't do my like I you know, I just definitely was like, I can do everything myself.
- 29:06Katie: Like, I'm very was very independent that way.
- 29:09Katie: And then I think having a baby just kind of humbles you.
- 29:11Katie: I'm like, Oh, you want to come over to my house and do my laundry and cook my food?
- 29:14Katie: Like, yes, please, like you can clean my entire house, you can touch any of my stuff.
- 29:19Katie: I don't care, I don't need to do it all.
- 29:21Katie: And that is a huge shift in mentality, and I definitely think having a kid forces you into that.
- 29:28Katie: Like, I'll take my village and be a village.
- 29:32Katie: Um, when before, you know, I was much more I'm gonna do this all myself kind of person.
- 29:38Angela: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 29:40Angela: That's awesome.
- 29:42Angela: So when did you find out you're pregnant now for the second time?
- 29:46Angela: And yeah, what were your thoughts in choosing your care the second time around?
- 29:51Katie: Yeah, so my second time, um, we weren't trying, but I was tracking.
- 29:56Katie: So I kind of knew it was a little bit outside of the window, but not so much that you know it was not a possibility.
- 30:04Katie: And so not as crazy, I didn't have pregnancy tests lying around this time to start crazy early testing, but I still tested, you know, a few days before Mimis period, and it was fairly light, and so I was it was the same situation I was like, I think I'm pregnant, and he was like, I'm not gonna leave you until the stick turns like pink again.
- 30:24Katie: Also, I think he was kind of in denial that we were having another baby right then, and so it was around the same, it was like October this time because they're about 23 months apart.
- 30:35Katie: So, and of course, then you know, yeah, there I am, I'm pregnant again.
- 30:40Katie: Um, and we were both really excited, so it was the same, same kind of uh development.
- 30:47Angela: Awesome.
- 30:47Angela: And were you kind of like same thoughts as far as your care went?
- 30:53Katie: Yes.
- 30:53Katie: So this time I didn't feel like I truly needed the doula as much because I had felt really confident in how the first birth went, and that I don't know, you've been through it before, so I did kind of go back and forth of like, do we need a doula, do we not need a doula, or me, do I need a doula?
- 31:15Katie: And I eventually I just I decided yes.
- 31:18Katie: So we were gonna get so I I went through main doulas again, and we ended up having Natalie this time again, and she was there for the birth, and so I I ended up did choosing to do it because in my mind, again, birth can go in many different ways, and if I did end up needing to be induced or anything, I did want to have that support person there.
- 31:41Katie: So I chose to have the doula.
- 31:44Angela: Yeah, yeah, that's really interesting.
- 31:46Angela: So, what does the support with them look like prenatally?
- 31:49Angela: Just for anybody else that might be interested in working with them, just curious.
- 31:53Katie: They're they are great.
- 31:54Katie: So they have we did an in-person meeting.
- 31:56Katie: Uh it was virtual for my first and then in person with my second.
- 32:00Katie: Um, and they came to my house and we talked about you know just my preferences during birth, like my personality, what kind of support you know, I like to have.
- 32:10Katie: And you know, I'm very analytical.
- 32:14Katie: And so for the first, one thing that helped so much it was there was a moment where I thought, oh, I I want the epidural.
- 32:22Katie: And Rosie was so great, she came over to me and she asked the doctor to walk through the steps of getting the epidural.
- 32:29Katie: And the second he started talking, I was like, nope, nope, I don't, nope, you can go now.
- 32:35Katie: I don't, I don't, I don't want to.
- 32:37Katie: Thank you, but I'm good.
- 32:38Katie: And she like it's like she knew that would get me out of it because she had listened to me and knew my personality and knew that was like what I needed.
- 32:47Katie: And so we just had that conversation.
- 32:49Katie: We talked about the first birth and the things that worked and the things that didn't work, you know.
- 32:54Katie: And so I loved water.
- 32:56Katie: I talked about that and the intermittent monitoring, how I like that, and then just some of the things that we could do from now until then.
- 33:04Katie: And they're always available, you know, if you need to text them or call them.
- 33:08Katie: And then for me, like all the fake labors, they're always like there to be like, nope, this is what you should do, or yes, we'll meet you at the hospital.
- 33:18Katie: And so, yeah, it's just kind of like that person to bounce ideas off of or to tell what you're feeling, or should I go to the doctor?
- 33:26Katie: And you know, they're not doctors and they'll tell you that.
- 33:28Katie: Um, but if you're like this is what I'm feeling, they can say, Oh, you know, that's a normal thing, or not.
- 33:35Angela: So or maybe you should call your doctor for that, or yeah, just kind of like a yeah, like educated friends, right?
- 33:43Katie: Yes, yes, that's a great way to put it, an educated friend, and the different positions like going up to birth, because if you can tell them kind of how you're feeling, how your body's feeling, they can give you ideas of some things to do to maybe get your baby into that better birthing position, which was helpful for both of my births.
- 33:59Angela: So yeah, awesome.
- 34:01Angela: So it's like the pre the one prenatal, like in-person visit, and then just like text and calls, and then like they're at your birth, obviously, and like postpartum too.
- 34:08Angela: It sounds like right, yeah.
- 34:10Katie: Yes, we have another in-person check-in postpartum.
- 34:13Katie: And then, oh, I forgot the best part.
- 34:15Katie: They do a uh overnight, so you can have them for an overnight, so they'll it's included in that price, so they'll come over.
- 34:23Katie: So both times I've had her come over and they have watched the baby while I slept for a full night, and I would just like pump and leave the milk outside of the door, and you know, she would come get it if I you know needed that other and yeah, or that you can split it up into like, oh, I need you know, four hours to myself and this day and four hours that day.
- 34:45Katie: So you can combine it.
- 34:46Katie: I don't remember if it's eight or ten hours of care, but you can use it in two blocks or one block for an overnight, and that's very helpful postpartum when you need a good catch-up night.
- 34:56Angela: So yeah, I can imagine.
- 34:57Angela: Oh my gosh, I bet that's so helpful.
- 34:59Angela: Like, what an awesome thing to offer, yeah, for postpartum support.
- 35:03Katie: Yeah.
- 35:04Angela: Cool.
- 35:05Angela: How are you feeling throughout this second pregnancy?
- 35:07Angela: And like, how is your like mindset and running around with a tumbler too, right?
- 35:12Katie: Yeah, so I I yeah, I forgot that with my first.
- 35:14Katie: I'm not a pregnancy person, I don't really love being pregnant.
- 35:20Katie: I do have a lot of nausea.
- 35:22Katie: I um the sec, so my first, you know, I had pretty bad nausea and it was hard, but there was only like two weeks that were really, really bad.
- 35:30Katie: With my daughter, I was bedridden for like six weeks.
- 35:34Katie: I was throwing up upwards of like 12 times a day.
- 35:37Katie: Um, so I had a little like hypermesis or whatever.
- 35:41Katie: Um, I don't remember the full name.
- 35:43Katie: So that was really hard because I felt so guilty having my son, you know, running around my house and I couldn't play with him, and I couldn't really like be a good mom because you know I was sick.
- 35:55Katie: And so he had to spend a few nights at the grandparents' house, and like I needed a ton of support, and I couldn't really work uh for a little while.
- 36:04Katie: So it's like everybody was giving me support at that point.
- 36:08Katie: Um, like thankfully, we have grandparents and I had a job that was flexible.
- 36:13Katie: Um, and a lot of like you know, new moms don't have that.
- 36:16Katie: So we were really lucky, but I was very, very sick, and that was very hard.
- 36:22Katie: I think more so emotionally, um, just because like I missed my kid.
- 36:27Katie: So yeah.
- 36:29Katie: And then, you know, the rest of pregnancies, there's a little bit in there that's like good, and then I you get some energy and you can go back out um into the world, but yeah, I'm I'm definitely more of a birth person than a pregnancy person.
- 36:43Katie: I'd give birth like any day, but I would don't want to be pregnant.
- 36:47Angela: So yeah.
- 36:49Angela: So how were things looking like as your pregnancy progressed?
- 36:52Angela: Did anything else come up?
- 36:53Katie: Was it mostly smooth or it was mostly smooth, you know, as far as her health and my health.
- 37:00Katie: We were both good, no, no big issues there.
- 37:03Katie: And then at the end, it was the same thing.
- 37:07Katie: Uh, lots of prodomal labor, fake labor.
- 37:10Katie: And I I there was twice that I thought my water had broken.
- 37:15Katie: And so I had gone in and both times was told no.
- 37:18Katie: So I was feeling a little crazy at the end of hers.
- 37:22Katie: I was five centimeters dilated for two weeks.
- 37:26Katie: I went into the hospital one night.
- 37:27Katie: I had called the dual as we went in and like labor stopped, but I was like sure that she was coming.
- 37:33Katie: And so we had a lot of like I had a lot of little hospital visits at the end there.
- 37:39Katie: Keep kept thinking things were happening and they weren't.
- 37:43Katie: And so how I finally knew about what's going on at the grocery store, and I again like felt like my water was leaking.
- 37:54Katie: And so, and I went to the bathroom, I just like got a bunch of paper towels and then just like went home.
- 38:00Katie: And my dad, I remember he was watching my son that day, and I actually went into the basement and I grabbed a um those little like tests that you can use for the pool to test the pH levels of the pool.
- 38:15Katie: And I tested the fluid because I was not going back to that hospital without like making sure it was not like urine or anything again.
- 38:24Katie: And and I was almost positive it wasn't because it was just like there's too much.
- 38:28Katie: But anyways, I was I was not going back there and being told no.
- 38:30Katie: So I tested the pH and I like googled like what the pH is of amniotic fluid versus what the pH is of urine, and it tested as the pH of amniotic fluid.
- 38:40Katie: So I called the doctor and I was like, look, I just took the pool test, and she's like, I've literally never heard this one before.
- 38:47Katie: But yes, I think you should come on in when you're ready.
- 38:51Katie: So uh that was how I found out I was in labor with, or I wasn't really in labor yet, but that you know, we were starting the process.
- 38:59Angela: It's definitely amniotic fluid.
- 39:01Angela: Yes, I love that you're like your process and your thought process of going through that.
- 39:05Angela: That's awesome.
- 39:06Katie: My husband's like, you did what?
- 39:07Katie: I was like, the and I called him and I was like, the test says it's amniotic fluid.
- 39:12Katie: So and anyway, so he came home and we waited because I wasn't in labor, so there was no like real rush for the situation.
- 39:19Katie: So we we got my son and my dad set up for the night, packed everything up, um, called Natalie and said we were gonna head in later.
- 39:27Katie: I wasn't having any contractions that day, so we just kind of took our time packing up and getting out of the house and then headed to main med.
- 39:37Angela: So, and how was that for you?
- 39:39Angela: It can be such like a mind game, like when your water breaks before like labor actually begins, and it's like, okay, your water breaks, but then like nothing happens for a little bit.
- 39:50Angela: How did you feel like going through that day?
- 39:52Angela: Like, you know, okay, like that's definitely amniotic fluid.
- 39:55Angela: Like that was confirmed.
- 39:57Angela: Like, so like, yeah, like and then like like are the contractions happening?
- 40:00Angela: How are you like were you like totally fine with it or was were you like getting anxious?
- 40:04Katie: I was anxious that I'd have to be induced, that the labor wouldn't start and I'd have to go through that process.
- 40:10Katie: I really didn't want that, but I also was like, I have Natalie, and I'm already five centimeters, so like if I have to be induced, I'm not I wasn't that worried because I was already halfway there.
- 40:21Katie: So I didn't, you know, I was my body was clearly like readying itself.
- 40:26Katie: And so I I was anxious about that possibility.
- 40:30Katie: And then, you know, I remember my dad was so funny.
- 40:34Katie: I was like, we have to go to the hospital.
- 40:36Katie: He's like, We there's not water all over the floor, like I don't know what you're talking about.
- 40:39Katie: So it was also kind of anticlimactic in the way that I was like, okay, here we go, versus my son, where you know I was in active labor like all the way to the hospital.
- 40:49Katie: But I did also miss that drive because driving in labor is not always fun to be in the car, so there was that positive.
- 40:56Katie: And so yeah, I think the most thing is I was just anxious about possible induction.
- 41:01Katie: Otherwise, I was ready to go after all that fake labor.
- 41:04Katie: So and false alarms.
- 41:07Angela: Yeah.
- 41:07Angela: So how did the rest of your day go?
- 41:09Katie: I I always thought she was gonna be fast.
- 41:11Katie: And I remember I had told Natalie that when she was at my house.
- 41:14Katie: I had said, I'm worried that she's gonna be really fast because my son was pretty fast for a first time, and you know, and and I felt like I had fought it for a little bit too in the middle during the IV situation.
- 41:28Katie: I think he could have been even faster.
- 41:31Katie: And I remember having this conversation, and she was like, Don't worry, like you're not gonna, you know, give birth on the side of the road, it's not gonna be that fast.
- 41:39Katie: And I didn't, you know, spoiler, I did not give birth on the side of the road, it was not like that.
- 41:43Katie: But so, anyways, we got to the hot that was another reason I was like, let's go to the hospital just in case, like we'll wait it out there.
- 41:51Katie: So we got in and I had asked them for one of the rooms with the new tubs, and they had said there's actually one available, and I was like, awesome! And I don't know if you've seen the new tubs at Maine Med, but they are very deep and they're very high up.
- 42:06Katie: And so the first thing they had told me when I got in there was you cannot give birth in the tub.
- 42:12Katie: You can labor in the tub, but you can't give birth in the tub.
- 42:15Katie: And I was like, okay, no problem, like not, you know, no worries.
- 42:19Katie: And so we were there for a while and nothing was really happening.
- 42:23Katie: Natalie came, we did some walks.
- 42:25Katie: I was having some of like some cramping and some of those like contractions, but not like the labor pains that I was waiting for.
- 42:34Katie: So this was we had been there from like 2 p.m.
- 42:37Katie: to almost 2 a.m.
- 42:39Katie: And Natalie had come probably around like in the afternoon, like late afternoon.
- 42:44Katie: And so I sent everybody home at 2 a.m.
- 42:47Katie: I was like, nothing's happening, I'm not gonna start any meds or interventions right now.
- 42:53Katie: I'd rather like get bet go to bed.
- 42:55Katie: And if we're still in the situation tomorrow, then we'll do what we have to do.
- 43:01Katie: And all of I was anxious for everything to start.
- 43:04Katie: Like I was like, let's do this.
- 43:06Katie: And it was actually like the doctors and and Natalie, who was like, you don't have to do anything.
- 43:12Katie: Like, do you feel like you could handle like a Pitocin or anything right now?
- 43:16Katie: Like you've been up for a while, it's late.
- 43:18Katie: And I was like, you know what?
- 43:19Katie: No, like that's they thank you.
- 43:21Katie: Like I should go to bed.
- 43:23Katie: And it really wasn't what I was anticipating.
- 43:25Katie: I thought everybody would be pushing me to get started, and you know, because the time the clock was running, and not a single person pushed me.
- 43:34Katie: And that was really I'm very, very grateful for that because I was anxious.
- 43:38Katie: I if if somebody had pushed me, I probably would have said yes because I was like ready to go.
- 43:43Katie: And so everyone else was like my sounding board, including the doctors and the nurses.
- 43:49Katie: So that was a really nice surprise uh for being in a hospital setting.
- 43:54Angela: Yeah, yeah, that's huge.
- 43:56Angela: Labor takes time, some you know, some of the time.
- 43:59Angela: Yeah, yeah, that's awesome.
- 44:01Angela: And to offer that like calm voice of that reflection of like, no, we've seen this before, like everything's good.
- 44:09Angela: Like you could just go, you know, sleep for a little bit.
- 44:12Angela: That's awesome.
- 44:13Angela: But because yeah, like you said, like if you were pressured, you probably would have been like, Let's get all like let's do this.
- 44:18Angela: Like, I'm ready.
- 44:18Angela: Cause yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:20Angela: I feel like so many moms like have been like in that position there.
- 44:23Angela: And just to have that supportive staff and yeah, the extra supportive talent it's that's great.
- 44:30Katie: Yeah.
- 44:30Katie: So definitely the opposite of what I thought it would be for that.
- 44:35Angela: So it's the opposite of all the stereotypical stories, and it's like, yes, like that's dogma on that other side though, of like hospital births are always this way.
- 44:45Angela: Like sometimes they're not, sometimes they're you know, super, super supportive places to be, you know, like sure they can be these other experiences, but they're not always, and like that's so amazing to hear the stories like this, yeah.
- 44:56Katie: So yeah, exactly.
- 44:57Katie: And that's like part of the reason I wanted to come on here because I really could have been a home birth person, and you know, we didn't do that, but I did I did have the support for having the kind of birth that I wanted at Main Med and never felt pressured to do anything I didn't want to do, so that that was really great.
- 45:15Katie: And so, anyways, we sent everybody home at 2 a.m.
- 45:17Katie: And I had had these like tacos sitting there since like six, and I was like, I'm gonna finally sit down and eat my tacos.
- 45:23Katie: So I started eating my tacos, and all of a sudden, of course, we had so we had my my mom and my mother in.
- 45:31Katie: So I missed this for my first birth story, but my mother was in the room when my son was born, and it was a really big deal for her, and she talks about it all the time.
- 45:40Katie: And my mother-in-law only has one, like just my uh my husband is her only child, and we are very close, and she watches my kids, you know, two times a week.
- 45:51Katie: And so I had offered her if you want to be in the room as well, you know, you can be in the room, and I said, just don't talk to me.
- 45:57Katie: That's my one rule with like my mom, and then like, you guys can be there, you can do whatever you want.
- 46:00Katie: Just like don't talk to me.
- 46:02Katie: Um, just like let me do my thing.
- 46:04Katie: And so she was really, really excited.
- 46:06Katie: So they had my mom and my mother-in-law had both been at the hospital since we like got there, like they showed up like immediately, and they had been there for you know, like 10 hours at this point, and so I sent both of them home, and my mom was gonna sleep at my mother-in-law's house, so they were like both together, and so they headed back in one car, and they live about 25 minutes from the hospital.
- 46:28Katie: So they got home, and by the time they got home, my husband had already called them to come back, and because I was like literally sat down to eat my tacos and sent everybody home, and then all of a sudden, like baby girl was ready to go.
- 46:41Katie: So I got into the shower, and it just like very, very, very quickly got intense.
- 46:47Katie: And I got into the tub.
- 46:49Katie: My husband's filling up the tub, and so I'm in the tub, and my nurse had actually just taken a break because I had just taken a break, so she's probably like somewhere, you know, eating.
- 47:02Katie: And I had this other nurse who didn't know me, and she comes in and I started screaming for my nurse.
- 47:08Katie: I was like, You need to go get her.
- 47:09Katie: I need an epidural, you need to go get her.
- 47:12Katie: And she walks in and she's like, Katie, you've you've done this before, so let's just maybe like check you before we do the epidural.
- 47:19Katie: I think you're really close, like you know that you can do this.
- 47:22Katie: I'm just gonna go get the doctor.
- 47:25Katie: She didn't even make it out of the door before my daughter's head was like coming out, and I'm in the tub.
- 47:33Katie: The one place they told me I couldn't give birth.
- 47:35Katie: And so I'm screaming, like, she's coming, she's out, she's out.
- 47:38Katie: And then again, like chaos erupted.
- 47:41Katie: So all these people rush in, they start trying to pull me out of the tub because like I'm not allowed to give birth in the tub.
- 47:47Katie: She's like actively coming out, and so they did get me out of the tub.
- 47:53Katie: It was just like the top of her head was out, but her face wasn't really out yet.
- 47:57Katie: I think I don't really remember, but I pushed her out basically as people were lifting me up and was able to like catch her a little bit and pull her up.
- 48:07Katie: Um, yeah, and so there's like a woman in the tub, like one of the nurses, like other nurses out, like it was just chaos.
- 48:14Katie: My mother-in-law, my mom ran in as she's like coming out, and it's so it was ended up being I think like 80 minutes or so of labor, of actual labor.
- 48:25Katie: She came out right, yeah, it was fast.
- 48:28Katie: I don't remember if it was 60 or 90 minutes, but it was very quick.
- 48:32Angela: So how long from that right, like moment of peace when you're like, okay, everybody just like stop looking at me for a second, even though like that wasn't like really ultimately like what was happening, you know.
- 48:42Angela: But like, you know, the big you know, you could almost like feel, you know, like all of that, like, okay, like what when's something gonna happen, right?
- 48:49Angela: From everybody on some level, even though they have all good intentions, right?
- 48:53Angela: And it's just like everybody leaves, you're eating your taco, the taco and 2 a.m.
- 48:58Angela: taco energy.
- 49:00Katie: Love it, yeah, 2 a.m.
- 49:01Katie: taco energy, yeah, for sure.
- 49:04Katie: Yeah, so it was quick.
- 49:05Katie: I mean, she was out by 4 a.m.
- 49:07Katie: and I sent everyone home at two.
- 49:09Katie: So yeah, it was very, very fast.
- 49:11Katie: Um, and she came out in the tub.
- 49:14Katie: And so, yeah, and the one place they told me not to give birth, but she yeah, so I pushed for maybe five minutes with her.
- 49:23Katie: I mean, she just came, she just came right out.
- 49:26Katie: So she was ready.
- 49:28Angela: Wow, oh my goodness.
- 49:29Angela: So how did everything kind of happen like immediately after that?
- 49:33Angela: Was there any like tearing?
- 49:34Angela: Did your placenta come easily?
- 49:37Katie: Yeah, so with my first the placenta came fast.
- 49:41Katie: I think I had one stitch, um, like a labial stitch or something.
- 49:47Katie: Um, nothing bad.
- 49:49Katie: Um, it was very easy.
- 49:50Katie: And with her, I do actually like remember when I like had tore a little bit because they had pulled me out of the tub and I was like on the edge of the tub, kind of holding her head.
- 50:01Katie: And I remember someone saying, like, you can push now.
- 50:04Katie: Like you're like, you know, you it's okay.
- 50:07Katie: Like you're out of the water, you can push.
- 50:08Katie: And I wasn't like really ready to push.
- 50:11Katie: And then in my mind, though, I was like, she's out, you know, and I I I went to push before the contraction came, and I like felt a little bit and like stopped.
- 50:20Katie: And then I waited for the contraction to came to come, and then she just kind of like came out from there.
- 50:26Katie: But I do like I remember that like feeling of like the the rip a little bit.
- 50:32Katie: I know I don't even want to say that because I don't want to scare anyone listening, but like I did feel it.
- 50:36Katie: Um, you know, it wasn't as bad as the birthing pain, so you'll you know, there you go.
- 50:41Katie: Um, and then she came out and we got up there, and I had torn uh I feel like you hear everybody tears from like the back.
- 50:51Katie: I had torn near the front.
- 50:53Katie: So it was like very I didn't even that had something I had never heard before, so I had no idea.
- 50:58Katie: And so they went to it was kind of a mess.
- 51:03Katie: I had her on the bed, and they were like stitching me up, but because I didn't have an epidural or anything, they went to like go numb, and like that needle was like very, very painful, and then they had numbed it, but then they started stitching, but I could still feel it, and so they had to do it again, and so I was like very, very tense and very like stressed out, and I was like holding in my placenta, like I was like so my placenta wasn't coming out.
- 51:35Katie: They're they had decided to stitch me because like there was like a little pause with the placenta.
- 51:42Katie: I don't know why they stitched me first, honestly, but my placenta wasn't out yet when they were stitching up, and it was only I don't remember how many stitches it was, but it was more than one the first time.
- 51:54Katie: So like there wasn't there was active stitching, and then my placenta wasn't coming out, so they were doing like the very aggressive, like you know, rubbing on my belly and pushing.
- 52:05Katie: And then I don't know who it was, but one of the residents or something had just said, like, I think I had caught I had I called time out and I said like I I like this is too much going on, like not like you all need to step back.
- 52:19Katie: Like this is like too much is happening.
- 52:22Katie: And one of the residents had said, um, like I think you just need to relax your pelvic floor.
- 52:28Katie: And like I just like took a deep breath and just like relaxed, and my felt my placenta came right out.
- 52:33Katie: Like it was like I was like just there was just too much happening.
- 52:36Katie: Um, but so it took took that whole process took like an hour and everyone was starting to panic because it wasn't coming out, but it was really just like me just being like really tight from everything else happening.
- 52:48Katie: Yeah, so that was probably that was almost as long as my labor.
- 52:54Katie: No, it wasn't, but that it felt like it it was.
- 52:57Katie: Um, so that part was bad, but otherwise the rest of it was okay.
- 53:02Angela: Yeah.
- 53:02Angela: Yeah.
- 53:03Angela: Oh, that's that stinks.
- 53:05Angela: I feel like I've heard several, almost too many stories at this point of like kind of exactly that happening where like you're in the tub and baby starts to like come kind of fast, and like there's this panic, and it's like, let's get mom out of the tub.
- 53:20Angela: And in that process, there's some terrors that happen that are in many cases.
- 53:25Angela: Oh, okay.
- 53:27Katie: And that was frustrating because I was like, she's clear, like we're both fine, you know, and she's but I understand, you know, there's like I'm I'm a I'm an attorney, so I get that there's like all these policies and everything.
- 53:38Katie: Um, there's one of those times that I hate the policy because I'm like, wait, like we we're both okay.
- 53:45Angela: Well, and it's also like the policy is not law, though, right?
- 53:49Katie: Like, I don't think so.
- 53:50Katie: No, yeah.
- 53:51Angela: So it's just like their policy, it's not like you have these rights, these like these rights to say, like, don't touch me right now.
- 53:58Angela: Like you're like feeling, yeah, like you know, and they can't touch you, right?
- 54:02Angela: Even if it's policy to like do this or that in whatever situation.
- 54:06Katie: Yeah, and so I mean, I'm not I'm not sure what the the the rules and reasons are for no water births I may have, but I'm sure it's just probably a training situation of some sort.
- 54:17Katie: But anyways, it was still really great to be in the tub and basically give birth to her in the tub, and then it was really just the after that was problematic, but everything before then was good.
- 54:30Angela: So so how is your postpartum and like kind of going home and having like two babies now?
- 54:37Katie: Yeah, so I my daughter, I don't know w what we did to get her because she is just like she was the easiest baby, and I've had friends have their second sense, and I feel like I don't, I don't know, we just got off so easy.
- 54:54Katie: She is just she slept really well, she ate really well, um, she was just happy, she's just like a really, really happy girl, and she's turning one soon.
- 55:04Katie: Her birthday is really is the theme is just one happy girl, and she's just like she's just bright light, and so that I mean uh it just made a world of difference.
- 55:15Katie: We I didn't have a colicky newborn to worry about.
- 55:18Katie: So for me, it's I felt like why was this so dramatic the first time?
- 55:23Katie: I mean, she's just you know, she's in the carrier or she's sleeping, she's eating, and really it was my toddler that needed way more attention than the baby did.
- 55:32Katie: Um and so for us, like postpartum was it's never a vacation, right?
- 55:38Katie: But it was just this great block of time that I got to spend with my children that I didn't have to work.
- 55:46Katie: And that was just like such a gift to have like you know, those 14-ish weeks off to be with the both of them.
- 55:54Katie: And again, we have support so people could come take my toddler when I needed a break.
- 55:58Katie: Um, the difference was my husband was not able to take off work this time, and so you know, I took all the night feedings, but again, she slept, you know, four to six hour chunks.
- 56:10Katie: So it wasn't like I was up every two hours, like I could not have done that um with all the night feedings, but it just worked out that I was, you know, she only woke up two to three times, not you know, four to five times to eat.
- 56:23Katie: We did do a little bit more of like bed sharing uh this time, and they all kicked my husband out so we could make like a nice, sturdy, safe place so that she could just be next to me.
- 56:33Katie: And then, you know, it just made it so much easier uh to be able to feed her.
- 56:38Katie: And with my son, I was way too anxious to do that.
- 56:41Katie: And she hated her bassinet.
- 56:44Katie: That was the one thing she did hate her bassinet, but once we got into the you know, our our nice bed situation, she's she was fine, and um yeah, so postpartum was really nice that the second time around, just uh you know, you don't get a lot of breaks off from work like that.
- 57:00Katie: Had a good good few weeks.
- 57:03Angela: Yeah, it's so special to be able to take that time and just really connect and bond and like integrate as a new family for sure.
- 57:12Katie: Yes, and we were like my toddler handled it pretty well.
- 57:15Katie: I actually think things are I was it's funny, I was actually talking to another mom about this the other day because her baby was colicky and had some of the same issues that my first had.
- 57:25Katie: And so just needed her second, just needed a lot more support when they were a newborn.
- 57:29Katie: Now I feel like things are way harder now.
- 57:32Katie: That she's my daughter is like nuts, she's very crazy.
- 57:37Katie: She's walking, walking, like she's running, she's about to turn one, climbing on everything.
- 57:42Katie: You can't leave anything on the floor, like she'll tip over everything, she breaks everything.
- 57:47Katie: Uh, she's just a nut.
- 57:49Katie: And my son was a lot calmer.
- 57:52Katie: And he didn't, you know, we had like one lock on a drawer, you know, because he didn't open all the drawers or like he didn't, you know, cry crash into everything.
- 58:02Katie: And Joan just like leaves a tornado like in her path wherever she goes.
- 58:07Katie: And so now having the two of them I think is way harder for me than the newborn stage, where she was saying, you know, her boys um get along great, and they are like, you know, he's her second's pretty calm and just kind of follows the lead of the older one instead of like going like each way.
- 58:24Katie: So I think you know, each kid is gonna give you a hard time at some point, and each stage is gonna bring something different.
- 58:31Katie: But for us, the newborn stage was fairly easy.
- 58:36Angela: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 58:38Angela: And yeah, it's so true.
- 58:39Angela: Just like every baby's so different, right?
- 58:42Angela: And we're all just as humans so different, and it's just so interesting to get to know them as they grow, right?
- 58:48Angela: And they're different personalities, yes, for sure.
- 58:51Katie: Very different personalities.
- 58:53Katie: Um, but it's been really fun to watch them grow together.
- 58:57Angela: So yeah, awesome.
- 59:00Angela: As a final question, if you were to give advice to someone who's expecting or even new parents, like what's one of the biggest things, like after everything that you've been through, that you'd want to share with new moms or new parents?
- 59:13Katie: Yeah, so this one was hard for me.
- 59:15Katie: I feel like there's so much to say, but at the end of the day, I think what one thing I notice a lot with my friends and like our friend group and being around new moms is that you really have to trust yourself.
- 59:29Katie: And you know, if one of your friend's kids eats vegetables and yours does not, like it's not a referendum on your parenting, like every child is truly different.
- 59:40Katie: And the kid who eats their vegetables, maybe they don't sleep at night, or maybe they become a five-year-old who's just like you know, throwing things all over the place.
- 59:48Katie: You only are seeing like a snapshot of that parenting and the child's life and their home, and every home and every kid is different.
- 59:57Katie: Um, and I think especially now being on the social media side too, like you're only seeing a snapshot of what you see online as well.
- 1:00:08Katie: And so, really, just like trust yourself, trust your kid, and you know, nobody knows them better than you.
- 1:00:14Angela: So yes, comparison is the theft of joy, yes, 100%.
- 1:00:19Katie: Yeah, and don't give that power to anyone.
- 1:00:22Angela: Uh seriously, and then everything looks different to everybody, and everything comes in its stages and phases, like you were just saying, and like if things feel hard like right now, just like wait a week, and like there's a lot of things.
- 1:00:35Katie: Just like the weather in Maine, right?
- 1:00:37Katie: Like, wait an hour, it'll change.
- 1:00:39Katie: So it's definitely very similar with parenting.
- 1:00:43Angela: Yeah, it's a good way to think of it.
- 1:00:45Angela: Awesome.
- 1:00:46Angela: Well, now shifting into some of the things that you do online.
- 1:00:50Angela: You have your Instagram, Maine Mom Compass.
- 1:00:53Angela: Is it a website?
- 1:00:54Angela: Do you also have a blog, a Facebook?
- 1:00:56Angela: I know on Instagram I've just seen you posting tons of amazing, cool adventures for moms of little kids.
- 1:01:03Angela: So yeah, I'd love to hear you share more about what you do there.
- 1:01:08Katie: Yeah, so it really did start out as kind of a whim.
- 1:01:12Katie: I was out, you know, skiing with my husband and I was talking about I I am one of the moms who I don't thoroughly enjoy mothering at home.
- 1:01:23Katie: I get overwhelmed because there's so much to do.
- 1:01:26Katie: There's like those the laundry, there's the dishes, and my kids feel it too.
- 1:01:30Katie: If I'm trying to do laundry while also like be with them, you know, I work full-time, so my time with them is like it's it's very limited, and I try to protect it as much as I can.
- 1:01:42Katie: So if I'm with my kids, I want to be with my kids.
- 1:01:45Katie: And for me, that means getting out of my house because that's where I can be most attentive to them and to like really like sit in like in their joy and just like not be home.
- 1:01:55Katie: And for some moms, it's the opposite.
- 1:01:57Katie: Getting out of the house is really, really stressful.
- 1:01:59Katie: And I have a lot of friends where getting out of the house is very stressful for them.
- 1:02:04Katie: And then there's so much to think about as a mom, and trying to plan, well, where do I even bring my kids?
- 1:02:10Katie: And even myself, I found we get into the same rhythm.
- 1:02:14Katie: Like, all right, we're gonna go to Rank Pond, we're gonna go to the wildlife.
- 1:02:17Katie: Like, we have our spots, right?
- 1:02:18Katie: Pineland Farms.
- 1:02:18Katie: Like, we have our three or four spots, and we go all the time.
- 1:02:21Katie: And then when I had uh my daughter, we spent, like I said, we had a good maternity leave.
- 1:02:28Katie: We went on a ton of adventures.
- 1:02:30Katie: I brought my daughter camping when she was like six weeks old by myself with my toddler.
- 1:02:36Katie: And thankfully, my dad showed up because he was like, You're insane.
- 1:02:40Katie: And it was right down the road, so my husband could pop over for dinner.
- 1:02:43Katie: But I'm kind of known for doing things that you know maybe sound a little nutty to other to other people with their children.
- 1:02:51Katie: And so I was talking to my husband about this and about wanting to bring them to even more new places, but it's like so much work to try to find out if something's kid-friendly and how I wish there was somewhere that I could just log on to see all the things made.
- 1:03:05Katie: Because I find great things, so many people have amazing Instagrams, and then I save it and it ends up in my save folder, right?
- 1:03:10Katie: And then I never enter open my save folder again.
- 1:03:13Angela: Never open the save folder again.
- 1:03:16Katie: Yeah, it's just like the place it goes, like great ideas go to die.
- 1:03:19Katie: And so I came up with a few day plans and posted them, and very, very quickly it grew to like a thousand followers in less than it was like two weeks.
- 1:03:29Katie: And I was like, oh wow, like other people like this too.
- 1:03:32Katie: And so I just started creating it in my spare time, um, which is not much.
- 1:03:38Katie: And now I'm like just really, really excited about it.
- 1:03:42Katie: And we have some really I don't have a website yet.
- 1:03:45Katie: Right now it's just Instagram.
- 1:03:46Katie: I do have a website, but it's not, it's not live.
- 1:03:49Katie: Um, it's not clean.
- 1:03:50Katie: And then coming.
- 1:03:51Katie: Yeah, coming, and more extended plans for people, you know, who may be traveling here who want more or are a local mom and want to go somewhere they've never been before.
- 1:04:00Katie: Some more extended plans, and then working with some other local moms on some events.
- 1:04:05Katie: So we're hoping to get some kind of like it'll be like a photo shoot play date, maybe in the fall, and other events, some like merch.
- 1:04:14Katie: So if you're out in the world and maybe you see any another main mom compass sticker, and you know, you can say hi to a new mom, uh, things like that.
- 1:04:22Katie: So definitely working on more stuff to come, but right now it's just the Instagram, and the hardest part is really just finding the time to go to all these new places and grab like the footage that you need, which is different than like the footage I have in my phone.
- 1:04:36Katie: So we've been to so many places, but they're all just like pictures of my kids, not you know, videos or something that I can use for online.
- 1:04:43Katie: So really just like trying to get back to all these cool places we've been and put them into something that works for other moms.
- 1:04:51Angela: Yeah, I think it's amazing how you've compiled it all and how you break it down, all the different locations.
- 1:04:57Angela: And yeah, as an self-identified adventure mom myself.
- 1:05:02Angela: Awesome what you're doing.
- 1:05:05Angela: Like, because really it's so true how like it can be overwhelming, like watching your kids while you're in your house, also trying to do all of the things the laundry, the dishes, the never-ending things, like they never end.
- 1:05:16Angela: There's always laundry, there's always dishes.
- 1:05:18Angela: Your floor will always be dirty, like once a day, like always, like you're it'll always be there to do, like just do it tomorrow and go outside with your kids, you know.
- 1:05:28Katie: Yeah, they're only little for so long.
- 1:05:30Katie: And I don't even want to say that it's because it's gonna make me cry.
- 1:05:32Katie: But you know, I just like one thing I wanted to do is just make it easier for moms to go, especially if you're not someone who's comfortable doing that.
- 1:05:41Katie: And especially if you're somebody like me.
- 1:05:42Katie: I mean, my husband works crazy hours in the summer, he works at a golf course, so he's he's gone a lot of the summer.
