- 0:00Welcome everyone to the Becker's Healthcare podcast series.
- 0:02I'm Mariah Muhammad, writer and moderator with Becker's
- 0:05Healthcare, and I'm thrilled to have with me
- 0:06today Chris Wassel, president of marketing and strategic
- 0:09partnerships at Advantage Healthcare. Chris, welcome to the
- 0:12podcast. We're very excited to have you, join
- 0:14us yet again.
- 0:16To get us started, would you mind please
- 0:17introducing yourself and telling us a bit about
- 0:19your background and or, organization?
- 0:23Yeah. Sure. Glad to be here. So,
- 0:25yes, again, my name is Chris Wassel. I'm
- 0:27the
- 0:28president of marketing and strategic partnerships for Vantage
- 0:32Healthcare.
- 0:33Vantage is the largest physician practice of its
- 0:37type in New England, providing services to
- 0:40skilled nursing facilities
- 0:42and assisted living communities.
- 0:45My background, I have over twenty years experience
- 0:48in health care operations,
- 0:50development, value based payment consulting and network
- 0:54development, and
- 0:56technology
- 0:57development as well.
- 0:59Prior to Vantage, I was co managing partner
- 1:02for post acute care planning services.
- 1:05It was an organization that provided
- 1:08post acute care management and consulting services to
- 1:11ACOs
- 1:13seeking to build
- 1:14and operate post acute care provider networks.
- 1:18And I was also a cofounder of Accounticare,
- 1:21an information technology company that
- 1:24provides systems and services to physician practices
- 1:28and various organizations
- 1:30participating
- 1:31in value based payment arrangements
- 1:34around
- 1:35the care of older
- 1:37adult,
- 1:38patient populations.
- 1:40Wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing that
- 1:42background with us. So, Chris, so what are
- 1:44some of the biggest issues you're following in
- 1:46health care,
- 1:48for 2025?
- 1:50Yeah. So 2025 is a busy year for
- 1:53us, I'm sure, for a lot of other
- 1:55organizations.
- 1:57But at Vantage,
- 1:59we're
- 2:00launching several
- 2:02initiatives this year,
- 2:05and there's really four initiatives that we're working
- 2:08on
- 2:09that are major undertakings for us this year.
- 2:12So the first is,
- 2:15we're participating
- 2:16in a new
- 2:18MSSP
- 2:19ACO, sound physicians
- 2:21ACO,
- 2:22and that ACO so we're expanding our patient
- 2:25population that we're covering. We in the past,
- 2:28we participated in an ACO that
- 2:32covered our skilled nursing facility patient population
- 2:35and now we've added our assisted living population
- 2:38to that. So we have well over 4,000
- 2:41patients in the ACO. So that's
- 2:45a big undertaking.
- 2:48Secondly,
- 2:49we are preparing
- 2:52for
- 2:54CMS'
- 2:56new
- 2:56model rollout, which is the team episode
- 2:59model.
- 3:01In our market,
- 3:03most of the hospitals in the markets that
- 3:06we serve
- 3:07will be mandated to participate.
- 3:10And so
- 3:12given
- 3:13we have an extensive network across
- 3:16New England,
- 3:17we're very well positioned to
- 3:20help those hospitals,
- 3:22manage those
- 3:25episodes
- 3:26as patients
- 3:27mile the hospital on the post acute care
- 3:29side.
- 3:31So
- 3:32we're targeting
- 3:34those hospitals
- 3:36to work with them in the coming year
- 3:38on that initiative and also
- 3:41working with other
- 3:43network partners, home care agencies and
- 3:46rehab groups
- 3:47and such.
- 3:49And then there's a couple of other CMS
- 3:51programs that we're starting this year,
- 3:54one being the
- 3:56CMS Guide program, which is focused on
- 4:01dementia patients and in our case, dementia patients
- 4:05that reside
- 4:06at home in assisted living communities.
- 4:09So we have a partner that we're launching
- 4:11that with,
- 4:13so that's exciting as well. And then lastly,
- 4:16CMS
- 4:18in the last year announced
- 4:21the new advanced primary care management
- 4:24program,
- 4:26which and, kind of replaces chronic care management,
- 4:29which we
- 4:31have launched on a limited basis. And so
- 4:33we're going
- 4:34to launch that this year as well
- 4:38in both the skilled nursing facility and assisted
- 4:40living
- 4:42environment. So
- 4:44with all that going on, I think
- 4:47for us,
- 4:50with any of these initiatives, but with so
- 4:53many
- 4:54going on this year,
- 4:56I'd say our number one challenge is,
- 5:00with all these programs is collaboration
- 5:02with
- 5:03our skilled nursing facility and assisted living partners
- 5:06and home care groups and rehab groups, trying
- 5:10to bring
- 5:11all those stakeholders together,
- 5:14bring them up to speed,
- 5:16bring them on board,
- 5:20and develop
- 5:21and integrate with them. So it's a pretty
- 5:25major undertaking.
- 5:26So I think I feel really
- 5:29I think we feel very comfortable
- 5:32managing these different programs.
- 5:35But again,
- 5:36I think
- 5:37the probably the thing that we are most
- 5:39concerned about is making sure that
- 5:42all of the rest of
- 5:44key players and stakeholders
- 5:45that we're able to
- 5:47get them on board and all working,
- 5:50you know, together
- 5:51towards the same same goal. So it's a
- 5:54it's a pretty,
- 5:55you know, major challenge for us, but I'm
- 5:58I'm sure we'll we'll get there.
- 6:01Yeah. Yeah. Definitely. Thank you so much for
- 6:03giving us that that background. Is there anything
- 6:05that you're,
- 6:06seeing in the news or anything that you're
- 6:08doing at Advantage Healthcare,
- 6:11that's making you a little bit excited for
- 6:12this year or anything that's making you nervous?
- 6:16Yeah. I'd say so,
- 6:18you know, for this this year, we're
- 6:20we're excited about the greater acceptance and interest
- 6:24in seeing in the senior living space around
- 6:27value based care and CMS
- 6:29programs.
- 6:31In the past, a lot of the
- 6:33most part, the ACOs
- 6:35have focused on patients in the community, not
- 6:38in long term care.
- 6:40A lot of
- 6:42the programs, whether
- 6:43you talk about chronic care management and so
- 6:46forth, were developed for
- 6:48ambulatory care and patients, again, in the community.
- 6:51But
- 6:52now
- 6:54we're launching those programs in
- 6:57skilled nursing and assisted living. So we're excited
- 7:00about that. But
- 7:01that being said,
- 7:04there are a few things that
- 7:06do make us nervous.
- 7:08And
- 7:09so
- 7:10stability with CMS
- 7:12is important in the short term.
- 7:14If there are any changes to these programs,
- 7:18the time and effort that we are investing
- 7:21will be
- 7:22at risk. So again, we're
- 7:25investing our time and resources in multiple programs
- 7:30and there's
- 7:31obviously with
- 7:32potential
- 7:34changes
- 7:36at CMS and then obviously, there's a lot
- 7:38going on
- 7:40politically and so forth where
- 7:42we have some concerns. So hopefully, things,
- 7:46in the short term will remain stable
- 7:49and then we'll continue to move forward as
- 7:51we invest our time and effort into
- 7:53launching these programs. So but it makes us
- 7:56nervous.
- 7:57In the long term,
- 7:59we hope that CMS
- 8:01can
- 8:02begin to move from voluntary
- 8:04and pilots to mandatory
- 8:07programs and models
- 8:09that are in place for the long term.
- 8:11We
- 8:13feel that there have been enough
- 8:15there's been enough experimentation
- 8:17around
- 8:18various
- 8:19value based payment initiatives and it's
- 8:22really time to settle permanently on
- 8:26payment models that will be
- 8:28that will operate under going forward, so make
- 8:31the full
- 8:33shift from fee for service to value based
- 8:36payment.
- 8:37These models have been
- 8:39different models have been
- 8:41tried out and piloted
- 8:43and such
- 8:44now for almost fifteen years.
- 8:47And so again, the stability is important.
- 8:51Some of these models are put in place
- 8:53and they run for five years and then
- 8:54they sunset and
- 8:56it would be from our perspective, it would
- 8:59be
- 9:00good to
- 9:01settle in
- 9:03on certain models and make that ship. So
- 9:06it's a little concerning that
- 9:09so it's unclear when that's going to happen.
- 9:11So that makes us us a little bit
- 9:12nervous too because it
- 9:15just you just get concerned around further changes
- 9:18in the future. Again,
- 9:20I think all
- 9:23us and
- 9:24organizations
- 9:26in this space
- 9:28are looking for as much stability as possible.
- 9:30So we know what the rules are that
- 9:32we're operating under, so that
- 9:36all the work that we're putting into this
- 9:39really has
- 9:42you know, we're able to run for the
- 9:44long term.
- 9:46Yeah. That makes a lot of sense. Thank
- 9:48you for sharing that. And, Chris, before I
- 9:50let you go, the last thing I want
- 9:52to ask you is, in your opinion, what
- 9:54would the most effective health care leaders need
- 9:56in order to be successful in the next
- 9:58two to three years, do you think?
- 10:00Yeah. I think I think the the thing
- 10:03that will impact all of us the the
- 10:05most,
- 10:07and what I think healthcare leaders
- 10:10really need to
- 10:11focus
- 10:12their attention on
- 10:14is
- 10:15this time into understanding how AI will impact
- 10:18their organizations and how
- 10:21the right strategy they can gain a competitive
- 10:23advantage and avoid
- 10:25falling behind. I think
- 10:27this is
- 10:28moving pretty fast.
- 10:30I think
- 10:31there may be some folks out there that
- 10:33underestimate
- 10:34how this is going to impact things
- 10:38and may fall behind. And so I think
- 10:40health care leaders really need
- 10:43to get on board now,
- 10:45invest more time in research and looking at
- 10:47this and how it's going to impact their
- 10:49organization
- 10:50and again, how
- 10:52as an
- 10:53organization
- 10:54we can,
- 10:55really use this to
- 10:57gain a competitive edge.
- 11:00So I think that by far is
- 11:03the number one thing that is out there
- 11:06that we need to pay attention to.
- 11:09Yeah. Definitely. I definitely agree there, and thank
- 11:11you so much for those final thoughts. It's
- 11:13definitely been very informative. So, again, I wanna
- 11:15thank you so much for coming back on
- 11:17Becker's HealthCare.
- 11:18And I look forward to connecting with you
- 11:19again soon.
- 11:20Alright. Thank you. Thank you.
