- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Theo Take
- 0:17presented by Sea Geek. This is episode 502.
- 0:20I'll be your host, Kyle Corn. I'm here with my Co host Nate
- 0:22Reyes. Nate.
- 0:28Hey. Hi.
- 0:29How you doing? Look at us.
- 0:30The tan. I like this.
- 0:36All about the crew neck life these days.
- 0:40Might have to adapt it. I mean if I steal that.
- 0:44Go for it. I mean I'm I'm hoodie for life,
- 0:46but I'm I'm the crew neck life. Is it almost I'm dabbing in it.
- 0:51It's like double s, it double s, you know what I mean?
- 0:54It it double s up as like perfect at home but also like
- 0:58you throw a pair of jeans on and like.
- 1:00I think it's widely accepted in most in most settings.
- 1:06Good for you. Thank you.
- 1:10Before we get into it, Barista Bryce, can I just.
- 1:15Bro, that was it. That was it.
- 1:18That was. We got it.
- 1:19Can we talk about Barista Bryce for just a second?
- 1:22Unbelievable. I mean, where's this been all my
- 1:26life? I love it.
- 1:28I'm so here for it. Where has Barista Bryce been all
- 1:31my life? This is the kind of content
- 1:33shout out Bryce Harper. This is the kind of content we
- 1:38need. And by we really just 30 years,
- 1:4230 years old and older. Honestly, like I don't know if
- 1:45the if you know if the kids care as much about barista Bryce, but
- 1:49I'll tell you what, it hits the spot.
- 1:51And I'm not even really a coffee guy, but I'll tell you what,
- 1:55when I saw this, when I saw these barista Bryce TikTok
- 1:58videos, I within the hour, I found myself going to buy an
- 2:04iced coffee. So do what you will with that
- 2:07information, but the the. Have you have you dabbled in the
- 2:12other ones like the I got? I got real cut up on a on a
- 2:17banana bread 1 You made homemade banana bread?
- 2:19Banana bread. It was like the sliced banana,
- 2:22like shaped out like on top. And I was like, that's a classy
- 2:26touch. I had no idea.
- 2:29Unbelievable. Big time here for it.
- 2:33Not at all surprised by the bougie ingredients, by the way.
- 2:37Not at all surprised. Every ingredient is ridiculous
- 2:43like he I think he uses like coconut sugar.
- 2:46I mean, look at this. What is that?
- 2:51What is that? Yeah, I'm here for it, though.
- 2:55I love it. Yeah.
- 2:56I love it. I'm so glad that you and I had
- 3:01the same mentality, and I'm so glad we held off on what it was
- 3:05going to be. Did I give it away Where I was
- 3:06like, I have something that's like positive that we can
- 3:09actually start a show with something positive for once, I
- 3:12didn't give it away. No, you didn't give it away
- 3:14because at that point I was still racking my brain.
- 3:16I'm like, what? What's something I can start off
- 3:18with off the top here? But then it it it hit me.
- 3:22I was like I was I was all in on the barista Bryce content like
- 3:26yesterday and just needed to jog the memory a little bit.
- 3:30But we. Need more of that.
- 3:31Some things just grab the attention.
- 3:34Dare I say too little too late though?
- 3:36Like I would have loved to have seen the No, I'm I take that
- 3:41back. This look, this is the perfect
- 3:43chapter in life. So are we.
- 3:45You're right. You're absolutely right.
- 3:48Happening in the perfect time. Now I'm going to you know what
- 3:54I'm going to do? I'm going to show this to some
- 3:57some people in my life, some some Co workers, some friends
- 4:00who do not keep up with the evolution of Bryce Harper's
- 4:05career. That seems well, he's.
- 4:06Probably just pegged him as as a jerk at 16 and just stayed
- 4:11there. And, and then you know what I'm
- 4:13going to do? I'm going to show him this
- 4:15picture. I'm going to say, you're going
- 4:16to tell me that guy. You're going to tell me that guy
- 4:19:) hoodie. He's, he's wearing a :) hoodie
- 4:23with a beanie on and he's holding this a loaf of banana
- 4:28bread. You're going to tell me that
- 4:29guy's the jerk that you egged at 16?
- 4:33Get out of here, the caption Bed, Bath and bananas.
- 4:43That's so good, I'm super here for it.
- 4:46Where is it? There was this, he's holding up
- 4:50the whole milk talking about how you know when we don't have raw
- 4:54milk. This is my next go to and I'm
- 4:56like. Bougiest ingredients, I love it.
- 4:59Unbelievable what one of one Bryce Harper.
- 5:04I'm here for the barista Bryce content.
- 5:06You're going to need more of that all right, let's talk some
- 5:10talk some current events here. Let's talk free agents yet to
- 5:14find a home. I was going to title the episode
- 5:18like homeless free agents, but I'm like that's that's that's in
- 5:23poor taste. But it's a little click baity.
- 5:26But they are, the reality of it is, is they are as of this
- 5:29moment as of jobless, 1032 jobless, correct?
- 5:35That's that's correct. As as of 10:33 PM Eastern on
- 5:41Monday, January 13th, these players that we're about to
- 5:46discuss are without a job. So let's just start start right
- 5:50off the top here. Which means one of these guys is
- 5:52absolutely signing, but before the next episode, so you're
- 5:56welcome. Everybody, you're welcome.
- 5:57We, we are the straw that stirs the drink.
- 6:03That's right. You're welcome.
- 6:06There he goes here. Right off the top, we are the
- 6:10straw that stirs the iced latte, the Bryce latte, the Bryce to
- 6:16latte. Alex Bregman.
- 6:22Do I do I think that he's going to end up on the Red Sox?
- 6:25Thanks for asking, Nate. You're welcome at this at this
- 6:29point. At this point, yes, I do.
- 6:38Oh, I do. And there's a lot of speculation
- 6:44as to whether what's happening right now with Alex Bregman is
- 6:48just the Red Sox waiting it out. And I got to say, I think I
- 6:55subscribed to that philosophy, to that belief that they want
- 6:59Bregman. They're the Red Sox are
- 7:02ultimately OK figuring out another option for Rafael Devers
- 7:06positionally, whether and whether it be first base or DH
- 7:09and they want to make Alex Bregman their their corner guy.
- 7:17I just, I don't know if that's smart though, because I wouldn't
- 7:21want to put it past the Tigers because if, if, if the reports
- 7:25are true, if it is ultimately the Red Sox and the Tigers as
- 7:28the final two in the hunt for Alex Bregman.
- 7:32Do I think that the Red Sox should or do I rather, do I
- 7:36think the Tiger should be any sort of financial threat to the
- 7:39Red Sox, given that the Red Sox are, at the end of the day, the
- 7:43Boston Red Sox and they should behave as such?
- 7:47No, I don't think the Tiger should be any sort of threat.
- 7:50But I would also wouldn't put it past them.
- 7:52Like, if that's the guy that you want, we've seen it play out
- 7:54with other free agents that maybe you were, you were
- 7:57connected to, that you were maybe in on maybe even a front
- 8:00runner for at one point, but you lost out because you try to get
- 8:02too cute with it. So if you want Alex Bregman,
- 8:06just go get Alex Bregman because you have yet to really spend
- 8:10significant money yet. You've you've acquired guys via
- 8:13trades, via savvy, you know, moves at the table, but you have
- 8:18yet to you've yet to go out and get that free agent.
- 8:22You've extended guys, sure, but you have yet to go out and cut a
- 8:28check for a free agent significant check.
- 8:33So, I mean, because of what I was reading a few days ago,
- 8:39probably last week at this point, I guess.
- 8:45I mean, I guess we can get into it later, but I feel like now is
- 8:47the right time like that. Aronato getting moved is solely
- 8:52down to the Red Sox at this point.
- 8:55Like no one else is going to be doing it.
- 8:56It's either the Red Sox or he's not moving.
- 8:59That's what I'm reading. There's the rye guy.
- 9:06Been too long, rye guy. Ryan, where you at?
- 9:10Can we get do? You think he's got his mic on
- 9:14him. He's just going to.
- 9:15He's going to hop in the studio at this.
- 9:17Point the people just need Ryan Ripken in his car.
- 9:21I saw he's doing, he's doing, he's doing Tik toks walking down
- 9:26the street now. Have you seen this?
- 9:28Oh, I know. We'll just like, it's like it's
- 9:31just snowing. There's no one else on the
- 9:33street. It could be 2:00 AM for all I
- 9:35know. All right, he said.
- 9:38Drop a link I can hop in. Right, guys coming.
- 9:41Let's get Ryan right, guys. It's been so long.
- 9:43How do I how do? How do I send him the link?
- 9:46Mid EP mid live sesh. I'm going to send him the link.
- 9:50Let's get let's get him in here. I know he's fixing his hair
- 9:56right now. Right where you at?
- 10:02Should I even say what I was going to say?
- 10:05Go for it. I feel like my my Thunder has
- 10:08been stolen a little bit personally, but it's all right
- 10:13for Ragi. That's the only place My Thunder
- 10:16should go. So there are not, I think like
- 10:22we're just, we're just moving on from that.
- 10:23We think that's dead. It's bragging or bust.
- 10:29If you're asking me as like a Red Sox guy, I'm OK with either.
- 10:33At this stage in the game, though, as much as I love Nolan
- 10:36Aronado, the the thought of Alex Bregman and the fact that I'm
- 10:47going to say positional flexibility, but I don't, I
- 10:50don't need him at second base. I just think he's a better at
- 10:53this stage in their respective careers.
- 10:55I think Alex Bregman is just a better a better option, a better
- 10:58fit for that. Here, here's my thing is that
- 11:01like I wonder if the conversations being had that a
- 11:06trading of a Nolan, an aging Nolan Arenado, an aging probably
- 11:14on the on the downhill slide of his career, Nolan Arnotto.
- 11:20I don't think it's a strong enough move to move Devers off
- 11:24of third base. I don't know if it's a strong
- 11:28enough reason. You see what I'm saying?
- 11:31Are we talking? Bregman.
- 11:33No, for Arnotto. I don't know if getting Arnotto
- 11:37does that move justice. I think getting a Bregman for
- 11:42six years, I think moves Devers out of third base a little.
- 11:49It's an easier conversation, I think versus taking on an aging
- 11:54third baseman with a lot of dead cash and who will likely not
- 12:00live up to majority of that contract.
- 12:03Whereas Bregman, there's still some hope there.
- 12:05That's my opinion on it. Well, if you're talking like
- 12:09defensive urgency or or defensive?
- 12:12Of course Nolan's better than Bregman.
- 12:14I do agree there. I'm just saying overall to move
- 12:19your your franchise superstar out of his position, whether
- 12:24it's a good thing or not. Of course almost any other
- 12:29defensive replacement is going to give you an uptick than what
- 12:33Devers has provided. But to move it's, I think it's
- 12:37just the optics of it to move your superstar off the third
- 12:41base. But the the problem.
- 12:44Is fat contract of a Nolan Arenado and an offensive
- 12:49question mark? Now see, I don't, I don't
- 12:52necessarily think it's it, it would be bad optics because he's
- 12:56he's ending up as ADH anyway. And if, if you're bringing him,
- 13:01sure, like I, I get it aging. But if you're bringing in one of
- 13:04the better the defensive third baseman we've seen in our
- 13:08lifetime, even if it's for a couple of years, that's to me,
- 13:14that's all the more reason to expedite the process of getting
- 13:18Rafi to the, to the DH slot. And, and Bregman, you could say
- 13:22the same thing. I, I would argue Nolan bringing
- 13:25in Nolan is more of a reason to push Rafi off a third because at
- 13:29least with Brett, if you brought in Bregman, you could be like,
- 13:31well, we could try them at 2nd and experiment with that and see
- 13:34how that goes. Even though I, I don't think
- 13:36that's really in the plans. I think that's just lip service,
- 13:38but I don't know. I don't know either.
- 13:44I don't know either. I am surprised that Bregman
- 13:45hasn't signed yet. I do think that if the Tigers go
- 13:53towards Bregman and make that happen and reunite with AJ
- 13:58Hinch, I think that gives them a lot of flexibility because that
- 14:02infield is super deep. There's a lot of pieces there
- 14:06that they could then move to add and bolster that rotation, which
- 14:10is what we all know is what they needed in the postseason last
- 14:13year. The Tigers need to add to that
- 14:16and it feels like maybe the rest of the free agent pool would be
- 14:19forcing that. It feels like they maybe weren't
- 14:21in the hunt for some of these bigger names.
- 14:24And so I think that their best bet is to kind of look to what's
- 14:30available in the market and then move some of your ass, your
- 14:33assets that are a little bit deeper.
- 14:36I think it Torkelson could be could grab a lot of attention
- 14:41and there's a lot of teams that are missing out on 1st baseman
- 14:44or struggling in that area or maybe even needing some
- 14:47right-handed pop that you, you know, if you wanted to bring in
- 14:50a Bregman. I think they talked about who
- 14:53who are they putting at first right now?
- 14:55I'm having a conversation about is it Colt Keith, I assume I
- 15:04can't remember. I they they have like what seems
- 15:09like 6 middle infielders that are just kind of spread out
- 15:12right now. In the addition of Glaber,
- 15:14Torres is interesting. Oh, true.
- 15:16Yeah, yeah, no, you're absolutely right.
- 15:18I completely I completely forgot about the Glaber signing.
- 15:20So as of right now, there's. Question marks there he's.
- 15:22Pegged at 2nd and Cole Keith is projected to be the first
- 15:25baseman. And then you have Torkelson at
- 15:27DH. So like, are you done with
- 15:29Torkelson? Like that's, that's what I'm
- 15:31saying, is that if you do bring in another infielder like a
- 15:34Bregman, which seems to be the most obvious one, it's showing
- 15:38Carrie, it's. Showing Carrie Carpenter at at
- 15:39the DH lot. Torgelsen's not even in the mix
- 15:41here. Yeah, see.
- 15:43And then I, I just, I think it's time to start shopping that
- 15:46maybe, you know, it's been a little bit of a weird ride.
- 15:49He's a first round pick. He's a he's obviously Got
- 15:52Talent. Maybe just a little bit of a
- 15:54change of scenery, but like being sent down and still not
- 15:57really figuring it out. I don't know, maybe it's time to
- 16:00move on. Speaking of change of scenery,
- 16:02let's. There he is.
- 16:03Let's get the right guy in here. Look at the beard.
- 16:06Bearded rye guy. Oh, we can't hear him.
- 16:10This guy's Oh my goodness. Oh my, I thought he was buttoned
- 16:13up at this point. Oh, here we go.
- 16:15Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, there we go.
- 16:17Yeah, yeah. He talks all the time about all
- 16:18the stuff we did to to teach him the ropes and they're really
- 16:21going. And clearly we didn't teach him
- 16:23how to turn the mic on. We're, we're back to the
- 16:25beginning right now, right? But always a pleasure, guys.
- 16:30Hey, happy 500th by the way. Thank you.
- 16:33Appreciate you Rye. I'm.
- 16:34I'm I'm well behind you guys on my side.
- 16:37But what I was saying about the beard, Nate was a playoff beard
- 16:42in Baltimore, You know, Ravens, Hey, that that's been the busy
- 16:46time for us. Obviously baseball's heating up.
- 16:49That's where we get a lot of the synergy from.
- 16:54You know, I can't wait for baseball season.
- 16:56But yes, football is still buzzing as long as the Ravens
- 17:01are staying in the in the hunt here so.
- 17:04I'm in. I was just telling Kyle at it
- 17:06before we hopped on him in a I'm in a fantasy postseason or a
- 17:10playoff league and Derrick Henry went in for me so.
- 17:16You're welcome. Big, big Ravens guy on the AFC
- 17:19side at least. So good for you, guy, good for
- 17:22you. It's about time you had you had
- 17:25you had a little little momentum being carried in Baltimore, you
- 17:29know what I mean, that getting a first playoff victory is
- 17:31sometimes a big step over there. What?
- 17:34Wait a minute, they had one last.
- 17:35Year and I think, I think. It was just an Orioles slate.
- 17:38I'm sorry. Yeah, well, that's that's what I
- 17:40was saying. It wiped away some of the
- 17:41Orioles conversations. But you know what?
- 17:43Since you guys were talking about Bregman, you know, and
- 17:46talking about the Red Sox, hey, I got to tell you guys and Kyle,
- 17:52I think the the Red Sox are actually going to be a bigger
- 17:55threat than the Yankees for the season as it moves on.
- 18:00Can we just all, since we're all at least guys here, can we just
- 18:03acknowledge that the American League is pretty wide open as it
- 18:07stands right now? Yes, Yeah.
- 18:12Very wide open, I mean. I'm not.
- 18:19I'm not happy about it. Yeah, as they, as they sip their
- 18:23drinks, well, this, this is actually a great, this is a
- 18:27great segue because we're we're talking top, top guys who have
- 18:30yet to be signed. Hopefully the the ball gets
- 18:32rolling here with the market soon.
- 18:33But for the time being, talk to me about a couple of former
- 18:39Orioles at this point, Jack Flaherty, Anthony Santander, the
- 18:43the report just came out recently that said that both of
- 18:46those individuals are open to the idea of shorter term
- 18:50contracts in comparison to maybe the longer term contracts that
- 18:55they were hoping for. But at this stage of the game, I
- 18:58think I don't know if it's smart, but it, it may be the,
- 19:02the way the market's gone thus far.
- 19:03It's it maybe it's force their hands.
- 19:05So talk to me about where you possibly see these guys, where
- 19:11you like these as these two as fits?
- 19:14So, you know, it's fascinating, right, how this market is kind
- 19:17of gone, especially for how it felt like it was really
- 19:21sizzling. And so this past year when I
- 19:25talked to you guys a little bit, but going to the winter meetings
- 19:27and being there and we're setting up shop and you could
- 19:30see like the momentum happened. The Soto moved in the Garrett
- 19:33crochet trade and then we had these up and down moments.
- 19:38But then and it picked back up and now here we are on January
- 19:4213th as we're we're talking about this and there's some big
- 19:46names still in the market. You guys mentioned Alex Bregman,
- 19:48but then talking specifically about Tony Taters, Anthony
- 19:52Santander and Jack Flaherty. These are two impactful players.
- 19:56And I think that the pitching market side, I'll start with
- 20:00Jack. I think that Jack wants a longer
- 20:05deal. Which I understand a lot of
- 20:08teams don't want to do that. I mean hell, Max Free getting 8
- 20:12was so out of the world that no one was going to touch that.
- 20:19Then Jax had a little bit of an injury history.
- 20:21Great bounce back last year. So which side are you going to
- 20:26buy? And it just seems like a lot of
- 20:27those teams were saying, yeah, I'd be OK with maybe a two to
- 20:30three-year deal if I'd give it to Jack.
- 20:32And I think now it's coming to that realization, quite frankly,
- 20:35for Jack. I think once Roki makes a
- 20:38decision here, that's going to open it up, even though I I will
- 20:44say like I think the Giants being ruled out like that seems
- 20:48like a good fit if they're interested.
- 20:51Still. He's a West Coast guy.
- 20:55I just the Oriole conversation to me didn't make the most
- 20:59sense. He's good though, man.
- 21:00He, he is a very good pitcher. I don't know if you guys watched
- 21:05a lot of his difference. Did we talk about Flaherty's
- 21:08difference like what he changed from lat from the Orioles year
- 21:12and the Cardinals year to last year?
- 21:15We. We may have touched on it, but
- 21:19tell me more about it though, because I'm, I'm in the camp as
- 21:23it stands right now and and maybe you can change my mind on
- 21:27it, but I just, I don't think that any degree of length for a
- 21:32contract that he would receive would, would age well.
- 21:35I just, I just don't like he. I just feel like he's going to
- 21:38have to be maybe not for well, I mean, he, he's at, he's at a
- 21:44point now in his career where this kind of has to be the
- 21:46opportunity for him to, to, to grab one of those longer deals.
- 21:50But he maybe it's just, if he doesn't get the deal he's
- 21:52looking for now, he may just have to piece together 2-3 year
- 21:57deals for the remainder of his career, sort of like a Nathan
- 22:01Ievaldi is starting to do. I guess at this stage of his
- 22:05career maybe takes that sort of route, But I just, I just don't
- 22:08think his body of work, his his, his skill set.
- 22:15Maybe I just don't know if it's going to age well because it it
- 22:17lacks consistency I feel like. Yeah, I mean, the bigger thing
- 22:21for I saw with Jack, I mean, look, he was dynamite when he
- 22:24came out of when he broke out into the scene, right.
- 22:27You know, his first couple years were really, really good and
- 22:30then he dealt with injuries and a little bit of inconsistency
- 22:34and then it was kind of like, all right, what Jack Flaherty
- 22:36we're going to get. And then in 2023 it wasn't very
- 22:40good. So he was on the prove it deal
- 22:41last year, right with the Tigers, plays well, gets traded
- 22:45over his stuff's really good. The problem is part of that is,
- 22:51all right, Do you believe he's going to stay healthy for a
- 22:53while? But if you do believe he's
- 22:55healthy, he's a guy in his prime, you know he's only Gosh,
- 22:59if I do my math correctly, he's 29, right?
- 23:02Am I doing my math right? Which?
- 23:03Is weird because he feels like he's been in the league forever.
- 23:07Yes, so. 29 turn turn 29 in October.
- 23:11Yeah. So 29 in October right now.
- 23:14So you guys are getting that whole pitch of it right.
- 23:18So in this case, it's a guy of the options, the upside I
- 23:24think's really there and a guy also like he's a strikeout
- 23:27pitcher. I don't think people realize
- 23:28that as much. Last year was a bounce back
- 23:31where I was going with what he changed Kyle just to like finish
- 23:34that and why I would have interest in him for the two to
- 23:37three-year solely because of I just the pitcher's longevity's.
- 23:42It's just it's a hard thing to just commit that many years to
- 23:45guys like Freed Corbin, you know, Garrett Cole in the past.
- 23:51Like you want to you want to sign these bigger length
- 23:53contracts by all means, because you're trusting those guys track
- 23:57records. Jack has the stuff, but you
- 24:00can't trust the track record. So the thing to be changed in 23
- 24:04to 24. I have the video I could pull
- 24:06up. Maybe I'll I'll indulge you guys
- 24:08later. Could present on here, but
- 24:11Jack's out pitch is a curveball and I had it pulled up on on
- 24:17stats. You know what screw it, I got to
- 24:19find this. Wonder if I can pull this up for
- 24:22you guys. Do you mind if I pull this up?
- 24:24You do for it. OK, don't worry about me.
- 24:27But the breakdown, I think this is it.
- 24:32Before I before I make myself seem like a fool, I'll make sure
- 24:36it's the right file. But essentially Jack, his cutter
- 24:42and his slider were too similar so he said screw it I'm going to
- 24:45get rid of the cutter all together.
- 24:48And I thought it was the best thing he could have possibly
- 24:50done because when he did it made his other pictures even that
- 24:55much better. So.
- 24:59And of course now when I want to pull this up, I can't find my
- 25:03video now. OK, screw it.
- 25:05I'll just tell you guys. So anyway, Jack made an
- 25:09adjustment there. That's where I was going to.
- 25:11He was he got rid of the cutter because the cutter and the
- 25:13slider, as we you guys know about this playing the game,
- 25:17they can be so similar if they're flat and his cutter and
- 25:21slider. When they're flat, they're just
- 25:23like mediocre fastball. So if you watch moments in
- 25:26238685 mile an hour slider meatball, same thing with a
- 25:31cutter being 89 doesn't move. They're too similar pitches.
- 25:35So for a hitter, you can't really think.
- 25:38It's not getting you off your thought process and you see
- 25:41those pitches, it doesn't throw you off.
- 25:43Now a slider and curveball, there's there's a deception
- 25:46there and a five mile an hour difference with a little bit
- 25:50more of a little little hump there.
- 25:53And and his numbers throughout throughout his strikeout rates
- 25:57were through the roof. His number on curveball,
- 26:00strikeout percentage went up, slider up and then his fastball
- 26:04location, which got really more refined that also rose.
- 26:10So I think him solidifying those pitches, guys, I think that Jack
- 26:15is going to help a team significantly.
- 26:17I think Jack needs to go to a contending team.
- 26:22It just feels like at this point it's going to be a West Coast
- 26:25team or it's going to be a Midwest and the deal is going to
- 26:27be two years. I think 2-3 years.
- 26:31I wouldn't be surprised what what evolved.
- 26:32You get 25,000,000 a year Meniaga.
- 26:36That sounds right, yeah. I I think that that's kind of
- 26:39what it is so. Two years, 4045 I think.
- 26:44Walker Buehler got what? One for 22?
- 26:47One for 20. That's what was that Ivaldi was
- 26:5325, by the way. Yeah.
- 26:55So I I would say if I was a team looking for Flaherty or if I was
- 27:00Flaherty and I'd say, hey, I'll settle.
- 27:02I'm thinking of a deal in between what Walker Buehler is
- 27:06getting, which it says is it's is he an 18 this.
- 27:10Year and. 25 next year on the payroll, I would say in that
- 27:14range of like 20 to 25 mil, two to three years.
- 27:18I think Jack signs that's that's just me.
- 27:23See, I hear the West Coast thing.
- 27:25It, it feels to me like it, it has to be the Atlanta Braves.
- 27:30It just feels like that's such a good fit.
- 27:33It's such a place where he he doesn't necessarily, and I'm not
- 27:37saying he doesn't flash the skill set at times to be at the
- 27:41top of the rotation, but more often than not, it just it feels
- 27:45like we know what Jack Flaherty is.
- 27:47If he's your middle rotation, if he's 3-4, like that feels really
- 27:52strong. That feels like a stronger than
- 27:54most 3-4 rotation guys with the upside of, you know, putting up
- 27:59top of the end of the rotation type type performances at times.
- 28:02But like Kyle said, the consistently, you know, the
- 28:05consistency isn't always there, but it just feels like the
- 28:08Braves have missed out on a lot of stuff.
- 28:10You see, you know, Uncle Charlie moving on.
- 28:13It just feels like they need to do something and with all the
- 28:19injuries and all the guys coming back, I don't know how much of
- 28:22it needs to be on the offensive side.
- 28:24I feel like pitching is the route and I feel like it it
- 28:28fits. I just, I know he's the West
- 28:30Coast guy though. Well, hey, you know, you bring
- 28:33that up and it's it's a good point.
- 28:34I think he's comfortable Midwest.
- 28:36I honestly, I think if the team like the Dodgers were still in
- 28:41play, like that makes sense for him.
- 28:43Could be San Diego, but First off, go where you wanted and go
- 28:47where you needed. And Atlanta.
- 28:50I mean, I might have missed this, but Jeff Hoffman, like you
- 28:52seen all those news, right, That the Orioles had them for the?
- 28:55Physical. The Braves had them for the
- 28:57physical as well. And they both said like, we're
- 29:01not doing this. So clearly there's a need.
- 29:03And I and it seemed like the deal that Hoffman was going to
- 29:05get, they were flirting with the idea.
- 29:08Like, could he be pushed to being a starter?
- 29:10Regardless of it, Braves have been quiet and so Jack, Jack
- 29:15going to where he's needed, I think is going to be, you know,
- 29:20the the most pressing and the team that's most pressing
- 29:23probably. I like that a lot there.
- 29:25Nate. If it's not going to be the AL,
- 29:27why not be a sneaky team like the Braves who they are going to
- 29:32need to do a little bit more to compete now with the Super
- 29:35competitive? Oh 100% yeah, the Mets got
- 29:38better. I mean, the Phillies rotation
- 29:40has been added to now. The Nats are going to be
- 29:42scrappy. The Nats are one or two more
- 29:45years away from being back to being a a perennial playoff team
- 29:49in my opinion. So it's a it's it's an
- 29:54interesting, it's an interesting factor here.
- 29:57Now the other one that you mentioned the other Orioles,
- 29:59Santander, Tony Taters and everyone in Baltimore is
- 30:03disappointed he wasn't coming back.
- 30:05And I said this over on on on my work here.
- 30:09And I've told you guys in the past, I think the time to that
- 30:14would have been to re sign Tony was before the 2024 season.
- 30:18Then we started playing well, then he's going well, I'm going
- 30:21to I want to see the market and he deserves to see the market.
- 30:24But here's the problem is the market was sizzling for
- 30:29outfielders early and now it's kind of hitting this halt.
- 30:32You know, T Oscar Hernandez, I was a little shocked the deal
- 30:35that he signed because I thought maybe he was going to get a
- 30:37little bit more, but maybe it's kind of showing your hand.
- 30:41Well, maybe that's just what it's going to be.
- 30:44Now, Kyle, I'm curious, where do you think Tony's going to go?
- 30:47Where would you think it would be a good fit?
- 30:51Well, I'm, I'm still thinking about the point you made about
- 30:56the the best time to sign it because I go back to the start
- 30:58of this past season and Nate, Nate, you and I were talking
- 31:01about this. How he wasn't proving himself to
- 31:05just be a power bat across the league.
- 31:08He was proving himself to be one of the power bats in the league.
- 31:13Like and, and now that we've we've concluded the 2024 season,
- 31:16you look back on the last three years, just home runs alone.
- 31:19I mean, forget any other category, just a simple
- 31:21statistic of home runs alone 332844.
- 31:26Who who doesn't want that? Why?
- 31:29Why has nobody pounced on this? I think so.
- 31:36A couple things. First off, those numbers, he
- 31:40wasn't one of all the talent that the Orioles have.
- 31:44I think people are are failing to recognize when you say it,
- 31:47you realize it, but before that point he has been the Orioles
- 31:51best offensive hitter in the last three years.
- 31:54It wasn't Gunner Henderson, it wasn't Adley Ruchman, it was
- 31:58Anthony Santander, best run producer, best extra base guy.
- 32:05It's been Tony through and through.
- 32:08When he gets hot, he can challenge anybody on
- 32:11streakiness. The one downside for Tony, which
- 32:14is a strength, but also his weakness is he can hit any pitch
- 32:18out of the zone and then he can also swing it any pitch out of
- 32:21the zone and get himself in trouble.
- 32:23So I think the problem, at least if I'm looking, putting my GM
- 32:27hat on, what do you project Tony to be in four years?
- 32:32And I think that's what teams are kind of looking at.
- 32:34I still think Tony's looking at like a three-year deal.
- 32:38I, I feel like they could take him out of the outfield
- 32:40position. So if you do that, do you put
- 32:43him at first? Do you DH him?
- 32:45That's number one. And is there concern that he's
- 32:48going to be able to continue that as he, as he goes on?
- 32:52Because right, you get to a certain threshold and you feel
- 32:55like you can kind of fall off, you know, And that's the part of
- 32:58it. The hell.
- 32:58I think that's also why a guy like Pete Alonzo teams are
- 33:01afraid to give 30 some million in more than three years because
- 33:07it's nice and the success is here.
- 33:09But once the offensive production isn't there, Tony and
- 33:14Peter guys that aren't going to be their their skill set is
- 33:19revolved around the big ball and revolved around driving guys in.
- 33:23They're not going to be the the five tool steel bags be these
- 33:28these, even though I know they've gotten some recognition,
- 33:33but like defensive specialist, that's not going to be them.
- 33:38So I think that when Christian Walker signed that three-year,
- 33:42$60 million deal, I think that's when things started to set in
- 33:48that, you know, this power market was kind of sizzling out
- 33:53that that's personally what I thought.
- 33:56I am still shocked he's not signed.
- 33:58But do you guys think where I, I, I don't want it to be for the
- 34:01American League case, but do you think I do you want to know
- 34:04where I think he should go? Like if I'm the team right now
- 34:07and you are contending and they've made their point and
- 34:11they got a spot open in right field now if they really want to
- 34:14use them in the American League. We're not talking Toronto, are
- 34:19we? No, I don't know what to think
- 34:22about Toronto. Toronto's a great city.
- 34:24I love the fan base they're in on every single player, right?
- 34:29Every single player imaginable. They're the American League
- 34:34giants, Yeah. They're the American League
- 34:35giants, yeah. So they're in.
- 34:39No, it's not the it's not the Blue Jays.
- 34:41We mentioned if you're contending and I don't
- 34:43necessarily put them in that camp as of right now.
- 34:45So yeah, that would rule them out.
- 34:47Who do you got? Houston Astros, you just traded
- 34:52away Kyle Tucker and I thought, I'm like, are you selling the
- 34:55farm? Then they go, no, no, no, we're
- 34:56out selling or starting pitching Framber Blanco.
- 35:00We're not. We're keeping those guys Brown.
- 35:01They're all there. All right, you got Altuve.
- 35:06You have some really good pieces there.
- 35:07Your bullpen is still solid. Why not get a guy that's a
- 35:11switch hitter and you can use that fence and left field short
- 35:17porch? I think that that's a great fit.
- 35:20I did think the Red Sox were another good fit for him at the
- 35:23time. But Tony's got to have to make a
- 35:25decision here. Is it going to be chasing the
- 35:26money or chasing good money and right fit?
- 35:31Because Toronto I think will give him the most, but I don't
- 35:33think it's the right fit for him.
- 35:36I'm not going to pull this thread because I don't want to
- 35:38go down this rabbit hole too much.
- 35:43Do you feel like we are? I I think we can all agree that
- 35:48like a lot of our mentality and and mindset probably airs on the
- 35:52side of accepting analytics but still feeling attached to the
- 35:56old game. Are you concerned with the fact
- 36:01that like every, everything you hear about Anthony Santander or
- 36:06other players, even the the negative comments about Juan
- 36:10Soto, so heavy on how defensive analytics are going to struggle
- 36:16with an age where he's already not great and you know it's
- 36:19going to get worse? I just feel like we, we bury
- 36:25that conversation over and over and over, whereas it used to be,
- 36:30you know, what if you got a stick, we'll figure it out.
- 36:33And we don't necessarily have to have a top five outfielder at
- 36:37every position because it just doesn't happen.
- 36:40You know what I'm saying? It's like, can we just move past
- 36:42that and understand that? Like we can get value elsewhere
- 36:45while sacrificing other things. I don't know, it's, I'm just
- 36:50tired of that conversation. I have a can I, can I just
- 36:55propose a comp? I, I don't know if this is going
- 36:57to be received well, but as we're talking about this, this
- 36:59is the name that comes to mind. I pulled up their numbers just
- 37:03to do a little compare and contrast here.
- 37:05Nelson Cruz, now hear me out, was in the league from 2005 to
- 37:122008. Did not log a season where he
- 37:14hit more than nine home runs until 2009.
- 37:18His age 28 season 33 home runs would go to Anthony Santander
- 37:27what has was in the league from 20/20/17 to 2021 before he
- 37:34logged a season where he hit over twenty home runs. 2022 is
- 37:37age 27 season he hits 33 home runs.
- 37:43Defensive liabilities known for their sticks.
- 37:47Yeah, wow. This is what I'm saying.
- 37:50Is that like I, I just think teams, there's so many teams
- 37:53that use the DH as like a rotating half off day for that
- 37:584th outfielder or you know, other third base and whatever
- 38:04they want to do. It's just I think teams are
- 38:07struggling to wrap their mind around a long term DH that
- 38:14that's all they provide. And it almost ties one hand
- 38:18behind their back. Because I can speak for that as
- 38:21a fan of the New York Yankees that are at times screwed over
- 38:26with the Giancarlo stand and at times are, you know, spoiled in
- 38:31riches. But more often than not, it's
- 38:33kind of a pain. Yeah, I think the there's always
- 38:38a value for each team. You need.
- 38:40You need a certain recipe of players on your team.
- 38:44You need the boppers, you need the guys that can really do some
- 38:47damage and have balls leave the ballpark Dr. run runners in.
- 38:52You're going to then have to have the strap scrappy hitters
- 38:55like the on the other side, people not wanting Luis Arise on
- 38:58your team, a guy that just has averaged 200 hits.
- 39:02Five players the last two years have had over 200 hits and Arise
- 39:06has done that twice. So there's three other players
- 39:09in that group. You need guys like that.
- 39:12Then you need guys that are just going to hey, they just get the
- 39:14job done right. That's what builds the line up.
- 39:16That's what makes a team work. So for a team, when you're
- 39:20looking at do we have the firepower, Anthony Santander
- 39:23sits there and you go, yeah, like, why wouldn't you want him?
- 39:29And I know that the the the downside here, let's just play
- 39:32this because the Nelson Cruz comp is intriguing.
- 39:35But one thing that the one thing that that scares people away is
- 39:39that at least Nelson for the majority, at least down the
- 39:42stretch for Nelson, if you look at some of his numbers, look, he
- 39:45there was a little bit of a fall off on some average.
- 39:47But in his heyday, like starting at the last couple of year
- 39:52actually just in Texas in general.
- 39:54Goodness gracious. So we'll go from there. 260 was
- 39:56the low, the low point for him hitting for almost nine years.
- 40:01And then he hit 256 in Seattle in 2018.
- 40:04That was the lowest point. But in between there is anything
- 40:07as high as. I think the highest batting
- 40:10average he had in his career was 311, but the lowest one that he
- 40:14had was 226. Not until he until not until
- 40:172021. So it was a 13 year period of
- 40:21that. Santander, I think what scares
- 40:23people is that he's had one season in the last four years
- 40:27where he's hit over 250 and actually hit over 241 to be
- 40:32exact. So if there's one thing they're
- 40:34looking at for him is that if he's not hitting the big ball
- 40:40and you're cool with that, he hits 40 jacks that you live with
- 40:43the 2:30, you live with the 2:40.
- 40:46If he's not doing that, then you're worried about the other
- 40:50side of it. And I think that's kind of why
- 40:53that's to me what what people are looking at T Oscar Hernandez
- 40:56and him are actually very similar in some cases.
- 40:59You know, the biggest difference was, was how they each handle a
- 41:02specific count. I think it was in two, two
- 41:04counts, T Oscar's hitting almost 100 points higher than
- 41:09Santander. So it's like little things,
- 41:11right? So and the clutch factor T Oscar
- 41:14in the playoffs is phenomenal. I think that that's what teams
- 41:18are looking for. But I'm with you.
- 41:19I I think that people don't have to overthink it.
- 41:21Do you need power in your lineup?
- 41:23Exactly. Yes.
- 41:25Do you want do you want a guy that can help your team?
- 41:28Yes. And if that's the answer and you
- 41:29have the spot, then go get the damn guy because Tony Taters is
- 41:33going to be tell you one thing. Tony doesn't care if he's if
- 41:36he's slumping or if he does, he ain't showing it.
- 41:39I want a guy like that. He had no worries.
- 41:43You. Want me to tell you a story on
- 41:45opening day? I do please.
- 41:48So I was went down early and you know, I was doing my thing media
- 41:56wise and got went to the clubhouse and early got to see
- 42:00some of my former teammates in the clubhouse and say hi to
- 42:05everyone. You know, Dean Kramer, good kid
- 42:07friend of the show, talked with him for a while, hung out.
- 42:09And then all the sudden, you know, I'll get out of there and
- 42:11I got to go do my other pregame work.
- 42:14And as I'm leaving the stadium and I'm going to the parking lot
- 42:17to to get my other bag and change, I have to tie my shoe
- 42:23and I'm tying my shoe And all the sudden I hear, Hey, a guy
- 42:27goes, Hey, Rican, what's up? And I I look up and a guy rolls
- 42:31his window all the way down at Santander.
- 42:33And I'm like looking at my watch and I'm like, Tony, everyone
- 42:40else is in there and I said, are you are you late?
- 42:43And he goes, no, Poppy, I'm red on time and then speeds to go
- 42:49big ball in the the second at bat of the game.
- 42:52And I'm like, dude, this guy is just so just unrattled, unfazed
- 42:59and he and he's a good guy. But yeah, I got a question him
- 43:02on if he was on time or not. I'll just say he's the last
- 43:06person I saw going there for that day.
- 43:10That's good. That's good.
- 43:13He's a really good kid. I hope the best for him.
- 43:15Man, I wish it worked out. I thought he was going to be a
- 43:18Red Sox too. I did but.
- 43:22Yeah, Kind of putting a bow on this though for, I mean, in
- 43:25regards to the Red Sox, I'd I'd be happy with either of these
- 43:28guys just on shorter term deals. Anthony Santander a little more
- 43:33willing to extend that out if, if necessary, because I do think
- 43:38we were at a point in his career now where we know what it's
- 43:40going to be. But with Flaherty, you, you talk
- 43:43difference in in free agent pitchers versus position players
- 43:46and the the inherent risks that come with with either camp.
- 43:50I just don't know if Flaherty that like I said, going back to
- 43:54the consistency, I just don't know.
- 43:56I just don't know if it's there and I'm not willing to to risk
- 43:59it. And that not I'm not saying for
- 44:01the Red Sox, I'm just saying for any team out there, that's
- 44:02probably probably what a lot of these teams are thinking.
- 44:05Like we're we're going to try to piece meal a contract together
- 44:09and not blow the bank on it would be my guess.
- 44:15Can't do it. Well, Ryan, we don't want to
- 44:19keep you. You're you're a busy man, as we
- 44:22were talking earlier. I mean, you're the people have
- 44:26you filming reels, walking down snowy streets.
- 44:30Like can you tell your people to like just give Ryan a, a second
- 44:36to breathe, please? You don't, Ryan, you don't.
- 44:39I'm going to tell you right now, nobody's going to tell you this.
- 44:42I'm going to tell you. You don't need to be filming
- 44:44reels, walking down the street. Get to where you're going
- 44:46safely. The people can wait on the
- 44:48content. We know you like to grind.
- 44:49We know you like to put that content out there, but we need
- 44:52just safe. Hey, I was I was snowed in that
- 44:56day. I was checking on my car.
- 44:57It was fine. It's beautiful, gorgeous.
- 45:00I I no OK. I always get self-conscious
- 45:03about these, these videos right of the the the selfies, but I'm
- 45:08like screw it, I'm going to throw it out there.
- 45:09I appreciate it. I'm trying to to, to get a lot
- 45:12of our baseball scheduling in maybe loop you guys in on a on a
- 45:15normal routine on my side here so you guys can join.
- 45:19We're trying to up our shows to maybe 3-4 times a week and
- 45:24really get a good baseball feeling lineup and obviously my
- 45:29group always loves having you on over there.
- 45:31So we got to we got to line that up, but it's going to be a fun
- 45:34year, guys. We got, I got to fill you in on
- 45:36some things in the works. So we'll see.
- 45:40A Elise is going to be fun too. And it's going to be painful.
- 45:43It's going to be stressful. And unlike the National League,
- 45:48it really it's just going to be a wide open race yet again.
- 45:53So I'm excited. I'm excited about.
- 45:55It Before you go give me a Ravens Bills score prediction,
- 46:00drop it on me. I think it might be a little bit
- 46:04lower scoring. I'm thinking like 242420
- 46:08Baltimore. This is the year handle be able
- 46:14to handle that guy, huh Mr. Allen?
- 46:17Well they did handle him when they won 38 to 6 I think.
- 46:22That was a different ball club back then.
- 46:23I think, I don't know. I feel it feels like the Super
- 46:28Bowl to me. Like I feel, I feel like that
- 46:30game is the Super Bowl, so I'm pumped for it.
- 46:34It's not the Super Bowl, just one more game.
- 46:37It feels like that's the one outside of that.
- 46:41Let's go, Lions. Hey, you know what?
- 46:44I'm rooting for Detroit in the NFC.
- 46:47Except shout out to my to my former teammates, knuckleball
- 46:51legend Mickey Janis, Mike Bauman.
- 46:57They're both Vikings fans. It's tough for them.
- 46:59It's a tough look, It's a tough. Look for them, but it'll all be
- 47:03good all right, well, you guys be good.
- 47:05I mean hey like if you guys are doing this and you're and I'm at
- 47:08home, I'm glad to hop on and answer any baseball questions.
- 47:11That's what I was going to say. Do you guys know how to pull up
- 47:13videos on here? Do you know how to do that?
- 47:16Yes. I know how to do all of it.
- 47:18I've I've studied all this stuff for countless hours.
- 47:22I know exactly what I'm doing. He has not a clue as to what
- 47:26he's doing. We're going to be.
- 47:28We're, we're going to be. I got buttons now.
- 47:31We're going to be playing, we're going to be playing Castiano's
- 47:38clip talking about Iglesias earlier earlier today.
- 47:41So we'll test out the the video game a little bit.
- 47:44So we'll see how it goes, but. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:47Let me know. Can't wait to see what that
- 47:49beard looks like after another week.
- 47:52We need to no, I, I, I have to do some might have to do some TV
- 47:57work. So we might have to, we might
- 47:59have to clean it up. Don't.
- 48:01Don't hate on me, guys. Just the neck.
- 48:02Just the neck. I'm trying and I got to clean it
- 48:05up for when we're doing this whole new series.
- 48:08Some of my, my, my channel members and people know about
- 48:10it. We're interviewing some pretty
- 48:13good players that used to play for a long time.
- 48:16Plug plug your stuff before you get out of here.
- 48:19My name is Ryan as. He rubs his eyes.
- 48:23That's, I mean, that's, that's on.
- 48:25Bro, my name is Ryan. I still will be a Co host for
- 48:29the three O take when I can pop back on, but you can check out
- 48:32what I'm doing. Just add Ryan Ripken show for
- 48:35everything. But we'll all get together and
- 48:38get some things things going here.
- 48:41We got to, I got, I got some things we need to talk about
- 48:43Kyle. Hey, I said let's hop on a call
- 48:48and then you hopped on a jet to the winter meetings.
- 48:50So what, what, what can I, what can I say?
- 48:54Granted, I, I gave you like 24 hours notice, so that's on me.
- 48:57But we'll, we'll, we'll get on a call soon.
- 48:59We'll talk some things through and I got to.
- 49:01We'll go get lunch, we can break down some some break down some
- 49:06things talk to. You can you send the jet to me
- 49:09so I can come back? Yeah, by the jet, you mean
- 49:12Southwest Airlines? Sure.
- 49:14No, that ain't it. That ain't it.
- 49:15That's what we were dealing basic economy.
- 49:18Prince of Baltimore, don't fly SW Come on.
- 49:21You know what? When the When the media empire
- 49:22grows. We can talk differently.
- 49:24Here, But it'll be an exciting time.
- 49:27I I can't wait. Baseball guys right around the
- 49:29corner. Are you guys going to go to
- 49:30spring training? We've got the All Star Game and
- 49:34Home Run Derby locked up, I know that much.
- 49:36Like you're going to it. We are going to it, we will be
- 49:39in the park. Oh, low collab.
- 49:44Low collab. Get Ryan down there.
- 49:46Will Atlanta collab? It's already locked in.
- 49:49That's a it's, it's 100% certainty.
- 49:52OK, I got to. I got some things to think about
- 49:56here. I mean, I haven't, I haven't
- 49:58ruled out spring training, but that probably be a little bit
- 50:01more of like a on the fly kind of deal.
- 50:04But for in terms of plans, we've got the All Star Gaming Home Run
- 50:07Derby locked up, so we will be there.
- 50:12OK, cool. All right, well, I'm going to
- 50:15figure out what other obligations I have to do.
- 50:17I will find that Jack Flaherty breakdown sometime and we will
- 50:21talk about it. And yeah, we can't wait to talk
- 50:25about Morgan on a regular schedule.
- 50:26Miss you guys. Thank you guys for all you do.
- 50:29Got to get up to the studio soon as well.
- 50:32The invitation's there, Nate. Same for you.
- 50:34Just hop on a flight. Just give me that jet, baby.
- 50:36Hop on a flight man. Hey hey, cheers to to the AL
- 50:39East being fun and annoyingly. Frustrating.
- 50:44Appreciate you, Ryan. You're a good kid.
- 50:45See you buddy. You're a good kid.
- 50:46All right, guys. See ya.
- 50:51Ryan, everybody love that Ryan Ripken.
- 50:55I don't have claps. So here you go, Ryan.
- 51:00Appreciate you, my friend. Let's can we talk about it?
- 51:07We sort of hinted at it. Let's talk about the the chaos.
- 51:13That's the Blue Jays. I, I mean, I had a note here to,
- 51:16to touch on Jeff Hoffman's deal real quick, but come to find out
- 51:21that apparently they're one of the three, one of the three
- 51:25finalists for Rokie Sasaki. What kind of sick joke is that
- 51:30for Blue Jays fans? There's no chance, no shot you
- 51:36think that you're a legitimate finalist.
- 51:40I don't understand. I'm, I'm so baffled.
- 51:43I'm so lost on everything that the organization is.
- 51:50I can't imagine it being a landing spot.
- 51:56I genuinely can't imagine it. Let's recap what's what's
- 52:01happened with the the Blue Jays. The last call it what, 772
- 52:06hours, 96 hours, whatever that is.
- 52:09Yeah. You signed Jeff Hoffman to a
- 52:13three-year, $33 million contract.
- 52:15And then you find out over the weekend that, oh, the Orioles
- 52:19said, yeah, no thanks, check the medicals, we're good.
- 52:23And then you find out today that the Atlanta Braves, like Ryan
- 52:27mentioned earlier, we're also like, yeah, no, we're good.
- 52:30Check the medicals. No, thanks.
- 52:32So in the last 96 hours, we'll call it an even 100.
- 52:36And the last 100 hours for the Toronto Blue Jays, you signed a
- 52:40guy that two other teams said no to due to the medicals.
- 52:45And now your fans have the false hope that you're a finalist for
- 52:48one of the more coveted pitching scenarios in all of baseball.
- 52:54I don't want much more false hope that they can survive
- 52:58because there was a lot of false hope, a lot of false hope with
- 53:05Otani last year. There was a lot.
- 53:08And I'm just, I'm just lost. I don't, I don't know how else
- 53:14to talk about them. I don't know how anyone can be
- 53:18positive about them. It's I'm so, as a baseball fan,
- 53:27disappointed. Laura in the chat just says,
- 53:30just put them in Dodge blue. Yeah, put everybody in dodge or
- 53:32blue put. Why not relax?
- 53:35I mean, at this point, it's, it's the most likely scenario.
- 53:38But at this point, knowing that the Blue Jays are not a
- 53:42legitimate contender, legitimate landing spot, I'm kind of
- 53:49pulling for the I'm kind of pulling for the Padres.
- 53:53I'd like to see that. I'd like to see.
- 53:55I like that. I like the commitment to cease
- 53:57and I don't know what that shopping cease trend for a few
- 54:02weeks was about. I hated that.
- 54:04So I like the commitment there. I I just love what this is as
- 54:11far as it gives you it give it checks that box of like landing
- 54:19one of the bigger fishes in the free agent offseason.
- 54:25It gives you that vibe without breaking the bank, without
- 54:29putting your team so far behind that you can't do other things.
- 54:32And I'm I'm here for it, man. And oh, imagine what that does
- 54:41for that rivalry. It's just, it already was an
- 54:43incredible NLCS and it's and it and it's going to give you that
- 54:48much more. I, I, I need the Dodgers to, to
- 54:52just let this one go, let the Padres win something and just
- 54:58close that gap and just get it tighter.
- 54:59It's just as a baseball fan, I want to see that.
- 55:03I want to see that rivalry grow. I mean, if if we're talking
- 55:06about the Dodgers letting somebody go, if there was
- 55:08anybody this offseason that I thought that maybe they would
- 55:12just let go, it was high. Song Kim.
- 55:14I was like, OK, this is a guy that you know, and you and I
- 55:17talked about it, some buzz surrounding the name, like who's
- 55:20going to who's going to land the guy coming overseas?
- 55:25Surely the Dodgers aren't going to bully the rest of the league
- 55:27and. And go snatch him, too.
- 55:28Yeah, that's what the Dodgers go and do.
- 55:30So if they're going to go out and get high Song Kim, why would
- 55:35they not go get Roki Sasaki I? Know, I know.
- 55:40And I, I read today that something that said that he, he
- 55:43doesn't care about the market or anything like market size isn't
- 55:46a factor. I'm not buying that anymore.
- 55:48I'm not talking about buying that.
- 55:50I, I, there's, I don't know what it is.
- 55:55It pisses me off so much that you see this like little this,
- 56:00like trinkle. What's the word?
- 56:02It's like a. Trinkle.
- 56:04That's, I don't think trinkle's a word.
- 56:06I I want to say like not sprinkle, but trickle maybe,
- 56:10maybe something like that. Trickle effects, Trickle
- 56:13effects, Ripple effect, ripple. Effect.
- 56:17I can't stand when I hear that like teams are, this team is no
- 56:22longer in the running. This team is no longer in the
- 56:25running. Like it's so I don't know why it
- 56:28bugs me so much. Why do we only get that with
- 56:31international signings? We never get that with any other
- 56:34free agent. That never happens.
- 56:38You may have your teams that were in the hunt for Soto, and
- 56:42maybe it's just because, like, the price can't be driven up.
- 56:46You know what, Laura, you and I, she's just trying to put some
- 56:51words. She's trying to put two and two
- 56:53together. No, I, I have some words.
- 56:55I think you're right. But I think to a point, if if
- 57:00there's a call it an American, like a we'll just say a domestic
- 57:04free agent, whether or not they're American, I don't know.
- 57:08But if, if they're here, such as a Juan Soto, if there's a
- 57:12certain caliber of player, I think where you do hear reports
- 57:15of like this team's out of the running.
- 57:17This team's out of the running. But you have your point though,
- 57:19like the average, right? The average, the average ball
- 57:23player who's testing free free agency for maybe we'll call it
- 57:27the first time you yeah, if you, you don't necessarily hear that
- 57:29unless they're coming from overseas.
- 57:33Fair enough. But yeah, the whole, the whole
- 57:35big market or the, the market size doesn't matter thing?
- 57:37No, yeah, no, look at the teams that are left and you're going
- 57:42to tell me the market size doesn't matter.
- 57:44What are we talking about? Yeah.
- 57:47And if if you go to Toronto, you have all of Canada as a fan
- 57:50base, which is another. Which I'm, I'm kind of out on
- 57:54the the whole like you got the whole country.
- 57:56It's like, yeah, but. I feel like.
- 57:59Is it like a 90% of Canada just snow with this point?
- 58:04Like, I don't even think people live there.
- 58:06It's possible. I don't know anything about.
- 58:08I personally haven't been, I know Toronto.
- 58:09Is nice, but. I've heard good things.
- 58:12Yeah. Sorry, Laura.
- 58:14I'm. I'm over right now.
- 58:16What's next? What do we got?
- 58:19Let's talk something that might possibly get you fired up as
- 58:22well. Let's talk Nick Cassiano's
- 58:24comments today. And as I mentioned, as I
- 58:28mentioned to our good friend Ryan, I, I think this might be
- 58:31the first time playing a little video and this is a perfect
- 58:34opportunity to mention watching the pod on YouTube, if that's
- 58:37your thing. You may be able to see the clip
- 58:40that we're about to play. Hopefully it works.
- 58:42If it doesn't, I don't know what to tell you, but Nick
- 58:47Castellanos had some controversial comments.
- 58:49I don't know what the show was from today, but it it it started
- 58:53circulating today on the Chris Rose rotation talking about Jose
- 58:59Iglesias. So let me see if this will play.
- 59:03Jose Iglesias ended up on the Mets and had a phenomenal year.
- 59:06MVP of the National League. Why?
- 59:08If you're looking at like the MVP as having the most weight on
- 59:13creating wins for your team, there's no other player that has
- 59:16had that much weight as Jose Iglesias.
- 59:19Because I think with him being able to come in and bring that
- 59:22Latin spark, knock the ice off of Lindor finally got Vientos
- 59:26probably comfortable to be able to be in everyday third baseman
- 59:30and now a bunch of guys that look like they had no direction
- 59:34running in all different directions in the beginning of
- 59:36the year. They made the playoffs, got to
- 59:38where they did, while the whole Mets organization had the OMG
- 59:43signs were everywhere from in the city to the stadium.
- 59:46The way I look at baseball, Jose Iglesias is unanimous National
- 59:50League MVP. Come on, I mean, listen, Shohei
- 59:53went 5050. You're saying that José José
- 59:57Iglesias made meant more to a team with his galvanizing and
- 1:00:01his number one pop song because he was able to turn around a
- 1:00:05franchise for a year? Yes.
- 1:00:07That's not going to work with the sabermetricians, I'm just
- 1:00:10telling you. I'm not a sabermetrician, I'm a
- 1:00:12baseball player. I'm saying that him going to the
- 1:00:16Mets and being himself got the organization to move in One
- 1:00:20Direction. Show Hey Otani played a huge
- 1:00:22part in in the Dodgers winning. I don't know if he's the sole
- 1:00:26purpose of the Dodgers moving in One Direction.
- 1:00:29That doesn't mean that what Show Hey did isn't record book worthy
- 1:00:33and he's not an amazing baseball player.
- 1:00:35I if I'm starting A-Team, I pick Shohei over Jose.
- 1:00:39There's no doubt about it. I'm not stupid.
- 1:00:41But the way that I saw baseball last year through my eyeballs,
- 1:00:44Jose Iglesias is the National League MVP.
- 1:00:49Nikki Castellanos. Dude, I I swear with every year
- 1:00:53that passes I my fandom for Nick Casianos grows.
- 1:00:58The legend of this guy just grows every year.
- 1:01:02I know. I mean there were so many, he
- 1:01:04had so many 1 liners in there where I'm like I, I I'd put that
- 1:01:08on AT shirt and I'd wear that around.
- 1:01:11I'm not a Sabre matrician. I'm a baseball player, I mean.
- 1:01:14Oh. Man, I love it.
- 1:01:16To his credit, he acknowledges the whole like, look, if I had
- 1:01:18to start a team, I'm obviously going show, hey, I'm not an
- 1:01:21idiot. He's, like I said, I'm not
- 1:01:22stupid. Yeah, but look, I saw this clip
- 1:01:26earlier today and I tweeted out, I said it's easy to laugh at
- 1:01:32these comments, but until the MLB or just baseball in general
- 1:01:35explicitly defines what the V in MVP actually stands for, will
- 1:01:40continue to go back and forth and what value actually means.
- 1:01:44And that's just 1000%. That's just the truth.
- 1:01:46So we can sit here and and and like I've seen people say that
- 1:01:50this is like the worst baseball take they've ever seen, which
- 1:01:53like whatever, teach their own. It's probably on paper.
- 1:01:57Maybe it's not the greatest take, but there is some validity
- 1:02:00to what he's saying. Like if we're talking about
- 1:02:02value, look at what Jose Iglesias did.
- 1:02:06Maybe not necessarily on the field.
- 1:02:08Like he he had some moments this year for sure, without a doubt,
- 1:02:12but just like what the value that he brought to the team.
- 1:02:16You cannot dispute that. And am I so like with that said,
- 1:02:20am I going to sit here and say that Shohei is not the MVP?
- 1:02:22Absolutely not. But I 1000% believe and stand
- 1:02:29behind and can get behind the sentiment in the comments that
- 1:02:33he shared on on the show A. 100% dude.
- 1:02:36Like I think anybody that is going to throw a ton of hate at
- 1:02:41this doesn't really truly understand like what the
- 1:02:51structure and development of a clubhouse means and and the
- 1:02:55synergy of a roster. And I think that's what he's
- 1:02:59talking about most. And it, and if you're talking
- 1:03:02about a team that needed that synergy more than any other team
- 1:03:09and Jose Iglesias, Iglesias provided that that is the most
- 1:03:15valuable thing for that organization.
- 1:03:18The the argument and the definition of value can be
- 1:03:25interchangeable depending on the player and scenario and team.
- 1:03:29All of that is, is interchangeable in my mind from
- 1:03:32year to year, from player to player, from league to league,
- 1:03:34from situation to situation. That definition can go back and
- 1:03:40forth a little bit. And when you're talking about
- 1:03:44the the directionless Mets at that point, needing a veteran
- 1:03:52who is in my mind, one of the smoothest glove men we've ever
- 1:03:56seen and turning it on and turning the clock back and
- 1:04:02finding something in himself offensively that I don't know if
- 1:04:05we've seen at all in his career while leading a a, a young
- 1:04:11group, while taking like he said, he broke the ice for for
- 1:04:16Frankie Lindor, Like to be able to just kind of let him sit back
- 1:04:20and relax and and get back to being Mr. Smile.
- 1:04:22Like that's what he did for that ball club.
- 1:04:26That's a huge, huge deal. You talk about value.
- 1:04:31I don't know how else to define it.
- 1:04:34If we're if we're removing just pure stats and pure numbers,
- 1:04:40then what I love about his comments is that that's a guy
- 1:04:43that's been in a clubhouse before, that's been in a winning
- 1:04:45clubhouse before that understands how important those
- 1:04:49players are. And you know, if we're going to
- 1:04:53get into the weeds of where we are at in this offseason, where
- 1:04:56we're at heading into 2025, this is when it's done.
- 1:05:02It's the names that maybe you're not fully in love with.
- 1:05:05Maybe it's not the Super stardom that you're hoping to spend
- 1:05:08hundreds of millions of dollars on for your team.
- 1:05:11It's these types of guys that fill in the gaps that that live
- 1:05:15up to this role. So I, I understand what he's
- 1:05:21saying, Do I agree? Would I change my vote from
- 1:05:23Ohtani to him? Probably not.
- 1:05:27But I can absolutely sit here and be on the edge of my seat
- 1:05:31for that, for that argument. I love it.
- 1:05:37Cassie's always caught. Up in some sort of sick dude
- 1:05:40that's. Some sort of controversy.
- 1:05:42Always he's caught. Up grows on me.
- 1:05:45He keeps it 100 every single time he speaks to.
- 1:05:48Every time I love it, I'm here for it.
- 1:05:52I'm a Cassie guy. Let's talk here real quick
- 1:05:56before we get to whose quote was this?
- 1:06:01Let's actually I I say let's this is really just a you thing.
- 1:06:05The whole Yankees fans being banned from all ballparks.
- 1:06:10Yeah, yeah. Look, these are your guys, man.
- 1:06:13I'm I you. Don't.
- 1:06:14We don't. No, no.
- 1:06:15No, no, no, no, no, no, no. We're not playing this game.
- 1:06:18Oh, we don't claim these guys. They were where?
- 1:06:20They they're Yankee fans. They were at Yankee Stadium for
- 1:06:24the World Series. You claim them by default.
- 1:06:27I'm sorry, you're not claiming them.
- 1:06:29Yeah, well, you're going to claim them.
- 1:06:31Banned by Major League Baseball. And if you don't know, we're
- 1:06:34talking about the two fans that interfered with Mookie Betts
- 1:06:37during the World Series game. I think it was what, Game 5?
- 1:06:42They have been banned by Major League Baseball from all
- 1:06:47ballparks indefinitely. How they're going to enforce
- 1:06:53that? That's that's what I don't know
- 1:06:55we've. Had this conversation before.
- 1:06:58They deserve the banning. And while I was looking up whose
- 1:07:02quote was this, I almost went with a quote about this
- 1:07:04conversation directly related to fans getting banned.
- 1:07:11And just there's no way of enforcing.
- 1:07:13Like how? How are you going to enforce it?
- 1:07:15You have 50,000 fans walking through your gates and tickets
- 1:07:22can be shared and texted and like no one, no one cares.
- 1:07:26A lady brought in a gun and under her belly fat a few years
- 1:07:30ago. Like what?
- 1:07:32No one cares, No one's going. They don't pay these security
- 1:07:36guards enough. They don't pay these ushers
- 1:07:38enough to sit there and hunt down some couple idiots that,
- 1:07:43you know, don't know what they're doing.
- 1:07:45So thank you, Murray. Murray's always in my corner
- 1:07:49Every. Chat Murray in the chat says I
- 1:07:51feel Nate when he says he doesn't claim the stupid fans.
- 1:07:53I as a Dodger fan do not claim the 13,000 drunken stupid Dodger
- 1:07:57fans. So yeah, I feel you, Nate.
- 1:07:59That's except the I, I, I feel you Marae.
- 1:08:02Like the Dodgers fans aren't claiming other Dodgers fans.
- 1:08:05That's completely acceptable. But Nate as a Yankees fan saying
- 1:08:10that he doesn't claim another Yankees.
- 1:08:11Fan rule doesn't apply. Complete No, the rule absolutely
- 1:08:14does not apply. That is your those are your
- 1:08:16people. And that was just a despicable
- 1:08:19act. And I mean, there was even
- 1:08:21headlines that said that they mauled Mookie Betts.
- 1:08:27It's up for interpretation what exactly happened.
- 1:08:29But you know, those are your like ultimately those are your
- 1:08:33people, so. Whatever, we'll see him at the
- 1:08:37All Star game. No, no doubt the biggest stage
- 1:08:42of the summer. We'll we'll see him.
- 1:08:43We'll be there. We'll see him.
- 1:08:44Who said it weather is like? Milk weather is like wine.
- 1:08:45We have to find out. Whose quote was this?
- 1:09:14For those unfamiliar, this is just looking back in the
- 1:09:17archives and finding stuff that's just a little bit of a
- 1:09:21gem. Maybe something forgotten.
- 1:09:23Maybe we were correct, maybe we were wildly incorrect.
- 1:09:28But I think this one aged well, buddy.
- 1:09:32Before we get into this, just want to pause here real quick
- 1:09:36shout out to the the new folks that have joined us.
- 1:09:40Thanks to Ryan putting the word out for us, the Ryan Ripken
- 1:09:45family. We appreciate you.
- 1:09:46We love you all. We welcome you to the three O
- 1:09:48take. And as Ryan mentioned, we're
- 1:09:49going to be doing a lot of content with with him this
- 1:09:52coming season. So stick around, add us to the
- 1:09:55queue like. It's the subscribe button.
- 1:09:58We were the ones that Ryan catapulted his career off of.
- 1:10:02We were. We were the ones that really got
- 1:10:04the kid going. Then that's not an exaggeration.
- 1:10:07Like I could, I, I wouldn't, because I'm, I'm not going to
- 1:10:10like put him on blast, but like I could show you the text, like
- 1:10:13the messages where he reached out was like, Hey, can we, can I
- 1:10:17get on there? And don't just don't forget
- 1:10:19about us, you know. Don't forget us about us, Ryan,
- 1:10:21when the empire takes off. But ultimately, you know, we, we
- 1:10:25did very little because I mean, look at what Ryan's doing now.
- 1:10:28I mean, he quite literally has like an empire.
- 1:10:29So he he took the little bit that we gave him and just ran
- 1:10:33to. Baltimore baby.
- 1:10:34And now he's just running the world.
- 1:10:36But anyway. All right, fella.
- 1:10:38Good. Quote is this.
- 1:10:40It's a long 1, so hang tight. Can we address this Chris Bryant
- 1:10:44to the Rockies situation? Let me just say this.
- 1:10:47I've looked at it, at it about a dozen ways.
- 1:10:50I cannot find an angle on this transaction that makes any
- 1:10:53sense, aside from the possibility that Chris Bryant
- 1:10:56just doesn't care about winning and wants to go out in Denver,
- 1:10:59which I've been there. You know, this nice place and
- 1:11:01maybe he just wants to enjoy mashing at course.
- 1:11:04I don't know. Other than that, there's really
- 1:11:07no situation. I saw some headline today where
- 1:11:09it was like the acquisition of Kris Bryant reaffirms the
- 1:11:12Rockies belief in themselves. I'm like, what belief?
- 1:11:16There's no attempt to put together a winning ball club
- 1:11:19there. What belief are you talking
- 1:11:21about? Seven years, 182,000,000.
- 1:11:25This is episode 266 back in March of 2022.
- 1:11:33I was going to go ahead and preemptively give myself the
- 1:11:35correct button because it is me. That's 1000% me.
- 1:11:41I mean, I I just nailed it with that one.
- 1:11:45You sure did, buddy. I mean, what, what a what a joke
- 1:11:48of a situation that's turned out to be.
- 1:11:49Stuck the landing. I'm not, I'm not going to, I'm
- 1:11:52not going to dance on Chris Bryant's grave like I had, I'm
- 1:11:54a, I'm a Chris Bryant fan. I have nothing against him.
- 1:11:57But it just, it was a situation just didn't pan out.
- 1:11:59And I I, I think we and probably a lot of other people probably
- 1:12:03saw that being the case because it just didn't seem like a fit
- 1:12:05that made sense. It didn't seem like a fit that
- 1:12:07was necessarily going to, you know, you hear all the time
- 1:12:11about change of scenery and I know it's cores and all that,
- 1:12:13but it just didn't seem like a fit that was going to catapult
- 1:12:15his career to another level in, you know, So I'll, I'll take the
- 1:12:20dub on this loan loan take that I seemingly got right.
- 1:12:24But yeah. I think it's just good to remind
- 1:12:29people, especially this time of year, just remind people that
- 1:12:34not every move is a good move. And and when you get desperate
- 1:12:39in these times, you're just like, please, I need my team to
- 1:12:41do something. It's not always worth it.
- 1:12:45Sometimes no move is the best move.
- 1:12:48So props to you. You called it.
- 1:12:51I don't see any kind of resurgence happening on that
- 1:12:54front. So pretty sure that is going to
- 1:12:56remain and a finely aged quote we are.
- 1:13:03I don't think we've missed anything.
- 1:13:07Yeah, I don't think so. Yeah, Murray wants the Whose
- 1:13:10quote is this song on Spotify? I can't make any promises, but
- 1:13:14I'll see what I can do. I might just send you the sound
- 1:13:16file, which, by the way, like I'm.
- 1:13:21I'm humming that. It sounds pathetic and it is
- 1:13:23pathetic, but like for like hours after we record, I'm like
- 1:13:26humming that to myself. I'm like doing the drum solo.
- 1:13:29Yeah, Paige is in bed and I'm just going to be.
- 1:13:32It's a it's. In the air, drums going.
- 1:13:35It's a banger, yeah. Was I saying summer or was that
- 1:13:41it? I think that's it.
- 1:13:45Were you saying something? Probably, I don't remember.
- 1:13:49We're just sending it, sending it off.
- 1:13:52I'll say we sent it. That was a good, that was a
- 1:13:53great show. It was great show.
- 1:13:55That was a great show. Shout out to again, friend of
- 1:13:57the friend of the program, friend in general, Ryan Ribbon.
- 1:14:01Yeah, See you guys in a couple of days and you're welcome
- 1:14:06because one of those names that we talked about tonight is
- 1:14:08likely going to sign before that next episode because that's how
- 1:14:12it always works with these things.
- 1:14:15But if not, don't go chasing curveballs.
- 1:14:21We love you all and as always, looking forward to talking more
- 1:14:23baseball with you guys soon. Until next time, stay filthy.
