- 0:06Speaker 1: This is gonna be the most fast and furious pod we've ever done, Mike Too fast, too fast, too furious.
- 0:14Speaker 1: How it feels.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Good football's back on, didn't feel great.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Sunday, though, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Mike Blitz.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I'm your host, mike Way, my co-host, Mike White.
- 0:34Speaker 1: What's up, dude?
- 0:35Speaker 1: How's it going, man?
- 0:37Speaker 1: Happy week two.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Happy week two.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Happy week two.
- 0:39Speaker 1: What a glorious week of college football it was.
- 0:42Speaker 1: My beloved Tigers took a beating which we'll get into, but overall I'm feeling really great.
- 0:46Speaker 1: It was just great to have five days of action games every day.
- 0:50Speaker 2: We are in it.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yeah, some good stuff, A lot of entertainment.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Really excited to keep this momentum rolling, although the slate for week number two not as exciting.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Couple big time headliners though.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it seems like week three, week four.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Week four is the doozy, which we'll get to do later, but there are still some things that we do that you should hear about, so we're gonna do it.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Before we do that, we're gonna do a quick review, a quick autopsy on week one.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I got some things to sort out to me.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I'm just gonna jump right in.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Obviously, the game of the week was Colorado knocking off TCU in glorious fashion.
- 1:23Speaker 1: You've probably heard all the takes.
- 1:24Speaker 1: For me, my only one is Travis Hunter playing 130 snaps Like holy smokes.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I don't have been comfortable for 20 years.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I don't think I've seen that.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Yeah, touchdown interception, playing both ways.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Old school football.
- 1:39Speaker 2: You love to see it.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I don't know that he can keep that up all year long, though I don't know how sustainable it is to play at a high level and play that many snaps, but ridiculous to watch.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm back, yeah.
- 1:52Speaker 1: He's absolutely a player.
- 1:53Speaker 1: I did see Dion say they're not letting him practice until Wednesday of this week, so at least it's on their mind to try and save us.
- 2:00Speaker 1: But like that is a ton of physical abuse, so interesting to see how that goes.
- 2:04Speaker 1: But Colorado statement when we're gonna be talking about things happening in Boulder, colorado, all season when lose or draw Like that's just there's yeah, if you thought Dion Sanders, for whatever reason, was insufferable before, wait until they keep winning.
- 2:20Speaker 1: We'll find out what happens next week in Nebraska.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I got a quick test.
- 2:22Speaker 1: But also shout out Dylan Edwards, schroeder, sanders, very legit, really like that.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I don't think they're already good at rush defense?
- 2:28Speaker 1: I don't know if you saw that TCU ran 260 yards, seven yards a clip.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Why didn't they just do that Rush defense or any defense?
- 2:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm, there is a spot and we'll talk about the brass game in a second for a contrarian play.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I'm excited about Colorado.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I'm excited about Dion.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Their top line guys are awesome, but it's still going to be tough for them to get a bowl.
- 2:50Speaker 2: They're going to be a bowl prediction.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Looking though.
- 2:53Speaker 1: That for you know.
- 2:54Speaker 1: So my prediction was two or less.
- 2:56Speaker 1: So they've got halfway there after week one, not, not good for me.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Your prediction of going to a bowl is very live.
- 3:03Speaker 1: That one is that one.
- 3:04Speaker 1: That bet is live.
- 3:04Speaker 1: So good for you.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I'll tell you my next thing.
- 3:08Speaker 1: But your Texas tech pick, ooh, I don't know about that.
- 3:12Speaker 2: That's like a hit man.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Although Wyoming may be better than anybody expected, Texas tech dropped one in overtime to Wyoming.
- 3:19Speaker 2: The Texas tech offense not looking as explosive as I thought.
- 3:23Speaker 2: No.
- 3:24Speaker 1: So I think that was one.
- 3:25Speaker 1: You and I both had one win, one loss.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Your win was clearly the so far after week one of the bowl predictions.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Your clear win was Colorado win, Texas S loss, Mine was Colorado losing and my win was the Duke winning.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I called, I told you, Mike Elko.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It was a great, great coach.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I think he's still number one.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Obviously, getting a statement win like that which happened last night, 20 to seven, just dominating Clemson, Wildly more talented team, didn't matter.
- 3:49Speaker 1: That take of mine is live well.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yeah, Clemson might be in trouble here.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Fsc might be sitting alone at the top of the ACC right now.
- 3:59Speaker 2: We'll talk about UNC and what they did against South Carolina.
- 4:03Speaker 2: But yeah, Clemson looked slow, they looked unathletic, they looked kind of lost on offense.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Lubnick looks inefficient running the offense and they I mean the big thing was they made a lot of mistakes.
- 4:17Speaker 2: They shot themselves in the foot a lot.
- 4:18Speaker 2: So a lot of that can change once you clean that up.
- 4:21Speaker 2: But the perception was not very good and they just didn't.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Didn't look as advertised with all those four and five stars running around the field.
- 4:31Speaker 1: No, the reality is this game shouldn't be closed.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I mean, the number was the talent discrepancy is massive, but like two turnovers in within the 10 yard line, one of which gets carried back 70 yards.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I still understand how that kicker missed those two kicks so bad.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I think one of them got blocked.
- 4:44Speaker 1: The coverage was terrible, did you notice?
- 4:46Speaker 1: Both times on the field goal kicks they were like, oh, it's got blocked or he missed it.
- 4:50Speaker 1: And they showed the classic videos of like Mike Elko yes, we got it, and you know Davo doing like the groan.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And they went to the commercial.
- 4:59Speaker 1: They didn't even show us the kick.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I was like, was it blocked?
- 5:01Speaker 1: Was it tipped?
- 5:02Speaker 1: And like so down on coverage on that, was not excited for that TV.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Well, Shippley looked really good, but he looked like their only weapon.
- 5:09Speaker 2: They're going to have to find some wide receivers.
- 5:11Speaker 2: A lot of drops on the outside Club.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Nick didn't play that well, but he didn't get a lot of help either.
- 5:15Speaker 1: No, I also.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I also thought the defense did do well in spots, but I expect them to be a more dominant unit just because, given what they brought back, given the talent level, it just didn't seem like they were there.
- 5:25Speaker 1: It felt like Duke play with nothing to lose and that's what happened.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, and it's not like they hit him with a bunch of like explosive trick plays and things you know their.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Their quarterback was their best weapon running the ball.
- 5:38Speaker 1: They didn't do anything here comes介ure Red today for Jeep Russell and Uncle Red, you know, type stuff like that.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Yes, and they.
- 5:42Speaker 1: They jumped into the tee title again on that general beyond major scissors game oforit for Wednesday Helmets as well, I mean welcomefer.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Oh yeah yeah, named.
- 6:07Speaker 1: My big takeaway from this game was USC's offensive line, which we knew was going to be a liability is even worse than I thought.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Holy smoke.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I think it said 16 tackled for loss, nine sacks.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Like it was horrific up front.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Rattler didn't have a chance.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Yeah, they didn't do anything on the ground which didn't help Rattler get rid of the ball.
- 6:30Speaker 2: They had negative two rushing yards, if that's always anything.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Keep in mind that they had, like I think they gave up 10, 11 sacks or something.
- 6:38Speaker 2: But yeah, they couldn't run the ball.
- 6:41Speaker 2: They're completely one dimensional and Rattler he can move around back there and they were getting to him no problem.
- 6:47Speaker 2: So key takeaways North Carolina's defense definitely grown from last year.
- 6:54Speaker 2: They weren't tested a ton outside on the deep ball, which is where they really struggled Because obviously Rattler didn't have time to do anything.
- 7:04Speaker 2: So we'll see how this looks moving forward, but yeah, their defense is definitely much better.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Drake may continue to look like a real deal player and kudos to UNC.
- 7:16Speaker 2: They played really well.
- 7:17Speaker 2: I didn't expect them to win like that, let alone in that kind of fashion.
- 7:21Speaker 2: But yeah, definitely South Carolina has some real question marks on the Milan and their schedule doesn't get easier either.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Obviously, they've got Tennessee and Georgia.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I think I have a tough draw on the West.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I think they're getting A&M.
- 7:36Speaker 1: They're playing Clemson at the end of the year, like it's going to be.
- 7:39Speaker 1: They get Furman next week, so they should be fine against Furman, but other than that it doesn't look good.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I think South Carolina might be in for a real reckoning.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Spencer Rattler's going to be running for his life for 12 games.
- 7:50Speaker 1: But on UNC I just got to say, oh man, soundclip didn't work.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Nevermind, I was gonna have put let me say put some ice on that.
- 7:58Speaker 1: I think it's a little hot to jump on UNC yet, but I think let's see what they can do against better competition.
- 8:04Speaker 1: They'll have their opportunities.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Let's keep it rolling.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Nebraska Nebraska is cursed man.
- 8:10Speaker 1: The way to lose, like they, the way they did to Minnesota, who's not a bad team.
- 8:16Speaker 1: God, this is just the Scott Frost stink.
- 8:19Speaker 1: He's just carried over.
- 8:20Speaker 1: It was brutal.
- 8:21Speaker 1: They lost.
- 8:22Speaker 1: They lost closely at tight one In a game they were in control of, had their chances and probably should have won.
- 8:27Speaker 1: The Greek Rockets they were calling him, I believe, as the Minnesota quarterback.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Not that good.
- 8:32Speaker 2: No, that was an ugly game.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Offensively it was, you know, your classic 10 to 13 barn burner.
- 8:37Speaker 2: It just, you know both of those programs kind of in the same boat but did expect Matt Ruhl's offense to put together a little something more than that.
- 8:46Speaker 2: But Nebraska, like you said, you know they just can't eke out those one possession games.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I think I saw something like they've lost nine out of the last 10 or something.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Just crazy stats out there.
- 8:57Speaker 2: They're just can't get lucky.
- 8:59Speaker 1: No, yeah, Obviously, I feel you guys like.
- 9:01Speaker 1: The regression to the mean is coming, but it just has not come yet.
- 9:04Speaker 1: They're playing.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Interestingly enough, they're playing Colorado next week, so we'll talk about that game in a minute.
- 9:09Speaker 1: But Nebraska have a chance to bounce back Colorado's sky high.
- 9:12Speaker 1: They open as a favorite in that game, but we'll jump into that in a minute.
- 9:15Speaker 1: We'll see you to the other side.
- 9:16Speaker 1: What else we're gonna talk about?
- 9:17Speaker 1: Really quickly, Most of the games play a lot of a lot of bad bad teams, a lot of blowouts.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I just want to sloppy play week one.
- 9:24Speaker 2: I mean, really overall nobody looked super crisp, super ready to go, except maybe Florida State, but everybody kind of had a little bit of a ho hum start to the season.
- 9:36Speaker 2: As far as execution goes, no, and most of the team in top five didn't do anything.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I do want to call attention to Michigan beating EC 33 and doing the hunger games for for John Harbaugh.
- 9:46Speaker 1: That was going to be the cringiest thing I've seen in college football in a long time.
- 9:51Speaker 1: For those who don't know, Jim Harbaugh is suspended four games, or maybe three, and they opened up with a kickoff and all of them lined up like one behind one another instead of a cross they could do for kickoff and they all held up the four for Jim.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Free Jim Harbaugh.
- 10:04Speaker 1: It was some hunger games I volunteer as tribute.
- 10:08Speaker 1: It was such a bad, cheesy, dorky.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Look out of Ann Arbor, which I love, Michigan, but what was what was?
- 10:16Speaker 2: that it?
- 10:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it was just stupid.
- 10:18Speaker 2: I mean, it was a self-imposed violation too.
- 10:20Speaker 2: I know they were kind of like fighting it.
- 10:21Speaker 2: The whole thing was kind of a fiasco and the NCAA is without teeth and going after all the wrong things, but there's no reason to play like some kind of victim.
- 10:34Speaker 2: What is that?
- 10:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
- 10:36Speaker 1: And look at me wrong, I'm not side with the NCAA.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I think it's over some numbers.
- 10:38Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 10:39Speaker 1: And given the, given the era we are in now, the NIO, where you're literally allowed to pay these kids, like it's not that this is not the time to sign with the NCAA, but like just take it better, Don't do that Just when your game move on Harbour will be there.
- 10:50Speaker 2: They're also, like, the easiest games of the season, and it's not like you're.
- 10:53Speaker 2: You know it's completely a moot point.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Yeah, but moving, but they will play some games later in the schedule.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Speaking of the next big one, illinois, one of that would be Penn State.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Penn State played West Virginia.
- 11:05Speaker 1: I was actually with my Penn State family member for this game, so we watched every play, every snap of this whole game.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Penn State looks good I'm like I drew drew a lot.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I think is the best quarterback in the big 10.
- 11:15Speaker 1: He is a big, strong kid.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I see why they like him a whole lot.
- 11:21Speaker 1: They took care of business.
- 11:22Speaker 1: They took down West Virginia.
- 11:25Speaker 1: They won by 23,.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Crazy, back to recover those of you who were betting it.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I was one of those people.
- 11:29Speaker 1: I like Duelar a lot.
- 11:31Speaker 1: He's got a big army.
- 11:32Speaker 1: He's a big kid.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Yes, staten Line was good.
- 11:34Speaker 2: They ran the ball well, they took care of business.
- 11:36Speaker 2: West Virginia a decent opponent to start the season, so we'll see how how that plays out for them.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Like we said last week, west Virginia might be finding a new coach next year, so they're not exactly gangbusters, but week one.
- 11:52Speaker 2: You got to execute Another big game last week Utah versus Florida Utah without camera rising and Utah looked good.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Florida did not.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Florida ran the ball for 13 rushing yards.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I think Just couldn't do anything.
- 12:06Speaker 2: It was.
- 12:07Speaker 2: That was the kickoff of like the sloppy weekend of football.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:12Speaker 1: The funny thing about that game is is I I cut.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I knew Utah was in better position.
- 12:15Speaker 1: They were favorite for good reason.
- 12:16Speaker 1: They were playing at home.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Utah is a tough place to play.
- 12:18Speaker 1: That place was was a Hornets Nest we love that term.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I think it's faith safe to say that stadium was there.
- 12:24Speaker 1: I actually didn't go the way I thought it was going to go.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Graham Ertz played pretty well.
- 12:27Speaker 1: He did better than I thought he was.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I think he's got a pretty good stat line.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I'm not saying he was going to win the game, but honestly I was.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I was a lot more bearish on him in general.
- 12:36Speaker 1: I just thought he wasn't going to play that well.
- 12:38Speaker 1: I don't think he is Florida's biggest problems.
- 12:42Speaker 1: They've got a lot of holes.
- 12:43Speaker 1: They've got a lot of bad discipline, which is what Bill and Napier are supposed to be like.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Special specialize in his.
- 12:48Speaker 1: You know the little details, but that was like an undisciplined, sloppy team with all kinds of bad penalties.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Well, they've got some players.
- 12:55Speaker 2: I mean ETN Trevor, etn Travis ETN's brother is a great player and you know he didn't do a whole lot on the ground.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I think their offensive line again is a huge question mark which is going to really hurt them come SEC play.
- 13:08Speaker 2: But yeah, utah took care of business.
- 13:10Speaker 2: They were the more physical team.
- 13:11Speaker 2: I felt good about them, even without camera rising, and happy to pelt myself on the back for that one, after being wrong about North Carolina to open the season.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Yep.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Hey, I was offense played a terrible Utah State team.
- 13:25Speaker 1: They need to average 25 points a game in order for the younger forensic keep his job.
- 13:29Speaker 1: They got 24 against a bad team.
- 13:31Speaker 1: 190 yards passing for Kate McNamara, which is pretty underwhelming 2.4 yards per rush.
- 13:37Speaker 1: This game started out really well.
- 13:39Speaker 1: I'm only talking about this because this contract deal is so interesting and, mike, I've already talked about the Forenz father-son coaching duo already extensively in 2022.
- 13:47Speaker 1: He has to average.
- 13:48Speaker 1: They had to get 325 points to keep his job and this was the game.
- 13:52Speaker 1: They were supposed to rack it up and the first three or four drives and looked at they were going to do that and they just stopped.
- 13:58Speaker 1: 325 is going to be a tough figure to chase down.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yeah, again week one, I think for them.
- 14:45Speaker 2: You know you got the win.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Worry about padding the stats later.
- 14:49Speaker 2: You've got several non-conference opponents that you can try to do that on.
- 14:52Speaker 2: So, yeah, not bad for them to come out and get the win against Utah State.
- 14:57Speaker 1: That's true, and the West even after one weekend.
- 15:00Speaker 1: I know it's one data point.
- 15:01Speaker 1: The biggest jump is always week one to week two.
- 15:04Speaker 1: This is because the College football has no effective preseason.
- 15:07Speaker 1: So there's a lot of things can change and will get better, but I didn't see anything in the West that didn't tell me, despite Iowa's less than ideal off-performance, they still can't win this division.
- 15:18Speaker 1: They have all of their goals still out in front of them.
- 15:21Speaker 1: So I'll give them that.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Mike, as a stockholder in the PPP fund, the PENIX for Paterons, for Polo's fund, you've got to be feeling pretty good about your position.
- 15:33Speaker 1: That stock is up.
- 15:34Speaker 1: My man went for 450 yards, five touchdowns.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Vegas has recognized him as the number two favorite after week one for the Heisman, behind Caleb Williams.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I'm feeling pretty good.
- 15:45Speaker 1: I'm feeling pretty good.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Five touchdowns that's a lot yeah.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Yeah, and honestly he was the only person who did it against reasonable competition.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Boise State is a good team.
- 15:55Speaker 1: They're going to win eight or nine games a year and they've throttled them.
- 15:58Speaker 1: I'm really still obviously we've heard those news this season already I'm super bullish on UW.
- 16:03Speaker 1: This week they were 14 point favorites and they beat the breaks off of Boise, so feeling really good about both UW and the PPP fund.
- 16:12Speaker 1: There might be a Polo coming to you sooner than you think if things keep trending the way they're trending.
- 16:17Speaker 2: That would be really nice.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Tell me about the performance of the former number two Heisman trophy candidate, all right.
- 16:26Speaker 1: is it time to do that?
- 16:27Speaker 1: Any other non-homework teams that we want to talk about before we move on?
- 16:34Speaker 1: I don't think so.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I think we covered all.
- 16:37Speaker 1: All right, that smells good.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Must be time for some of that home cooking.
- 16:42Speaker 1: This is the point of the show where Mike and I like to talk about our fourth favorite teams.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Of course it'd be LSU, ut, uva and Virginia Tech.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Little home cooking this is what makes the show personal for us.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Let's go ahead and jump into it.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Let's talk about what happened to my beloved Tigers Just got lost in Florida State.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Final score was 45 to 24.
- 17:02Speaker 1: I believe it was 17, 14 and 1 half.
- 17:05Speaker 1: We didn't make adjustments.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I got a lot of points about LSU.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I'm going to talk fast If you're listening to this, at 1 and 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 speed, good luck.
- 17:11Speaker 1: The right side of the line is bad.
- 17:13Speaker 1: The left side is good.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Freshport five star freshman Zalem Turd is coming.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Emery Jones is sliding.
- 17:19Speaker 1: It will get better.
- 17:20Speaker 1: The secondary got picked on by three absolute stud receivers.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Good news is nobody in their schedule has guys like that.
- 17:26Speaker 1: And the secondary will get better with Ashton Stamps and LeCranes Welch eventually getting seasoned into the group.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Harold Perkins number four will never be so poorly utilized in a game, ever again.
- 17:38Speaker 1: He was asked to spy 34 times and Jordan Traves said they're happy to sit back and pick us apart.
- 17:43Speaker 1: And he rushed a quarterback seven times.
- 17:44Speaker 1: I understand he's pulling a new position, but that was just simply atrocious and unacceptable.
- 17:49Speaker 1: The special teams Muff the wide receiver drops.
- 17:52Speaker 1: That is classic week one stuff.
- 17:53Speaker 1: That will get better.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I am still super bullish on our Tigers, given what happened to us.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Makai Wingo was an absolute superstar.
- 18:01Speaker 1: It's a stud.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Florida State tried to run the counter on us all day and they couldn't do it, mainly because Makai Wingo was shooting the gaps really well all first half and into the third quarter as well.
- 18:11Speaker 1: So we were able to stop one of the best things Florida State does, which is that counter run play.
- 18:16Speaker 1: So I feel good about that.
- 18:17Speaker 1: We're also getting Mason Smith back next year.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Those of you who don't know about him he was a first team all America as a freshman knee injury.
- 18:23Speaker 1: He is a superstar.
- 18:25Speaker 1: So every game on our schedule, with the exception of Alabama, we are objectively better than so.
- 18:31Speaker 1: I am still bullish on my Tigers, but God, that was a tough watch.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Yeah, all that's true.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Florida State's a really good team and actually looked even better than I thought they would.
- 18:42Speaker 2: And Travis has taken the next step.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I don't know that Jaden Daniels has.
- 18:49Speaker 2: He didn't show me much as far as his decision making.
- 18:52Speaker 2: He didn't show me much with his down the field passing, so he's still got to prove it.
- 18:58Speaker 2: That's not to say that he can't, but I would have thought that he would have looked a little bit more crisp.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Also, I'm just kind of mad at Malik neighbors man.
- 19:06Speaker 2: I've heard about him being the so-called best wide receiver in the SEC for going into two years now and he just keeps putting up these performances where he just doesn't do a whole lot.
- 19:16Speaker 2: He just disappears, and also watching it from the sideline on TV.
- 19:20Speaker 2: There's a lot of times it looks like he doesn't care.
- 19:25Speaker 1: So there's definitely a clear disconnect.
- 19:27Speaker 1: At the end of the first half we got the ball with like 60 seconds left.
- 19:31Speaker 1: We drove down with that great 40 yard run.
- 19:33Speaker 1: We got down there and they threw the ball to him like three times in a row on that left side, one of them, like he wasn't even the one the right route, like there's something, a clear disconnect between him and there I've seen that one, and this goes back to last year.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I've watched Malik neighbors make great plays, enough to know that he has it.
- 19:50Speaker 1: He can do it, but the lack of consistency is certainly there.
- 19:52Speaker 1: That's I think it's fair to say.
- 19:53Speaker 1: But before that, I really think it's a Jane Daniels thing.
- 19:57Speaker 1: My take on Jane Daniels is I think he is an above average college quarterback and my hope for this year if we were going to be seriously serious about national title contender was he had to make a leap and he had to find that next year through one week it does not look like it's going to be.
- 20:14Speaker 1: It's not going to be there, like it.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Just, he is what he is.
- 20:16Speaker 1: He's a dynamic runner, he's a one look kind of quarterback.
- 20:19Speaker 1: He's got great receivers if he can get the ball, but he just cannot seem to push the ball down the field and a lot of, a lot of LSU fans are asking like, is it time to go?
- 20:27Speaker 1: You know like if you take him out, there goes our run game too, because he's our leading rusher and he was again well like.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Well, that's what I was going to say as well is he can't be yeah A.
- 20:37Speaker 2: He doesn't protect himself.
- 20:38Speaker 2: He got, he took so many big time hits where that he could have avoided and put himself in harm's way, and then your running backs only had like 50 yards rushing.
- 20:46Speaker 2: He can't be your leading rusher for this team to have success.
- 20:49Speaker 1: No, and there was one where he there was one play I'm sure you know what I'm talking about where he left the field and got absolutely power bombed.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Looks like his face first.
- 20:55Speaker 1: It's just like you got to know better man.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Yeah, but he does that routinely, like he just doesn't get down, he doesn't get out of bounds, he just yeah.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Yeah, so we will see what we look like again.
- 21:05Speaker 1: The good news is one I actually think Florida State is well.
- 21:08Speaker 1: They I know they are clearly the class of the ACC.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Duke and Miami look good.
- 21:12Speaker 1: We're going to find out a lot about Miami here in a minute.
- 21:14Speaker 1: They played Texas A&M next week, which I think is actually the better team to be looking to get it for.
- 21:19Speaker 1: The Florida State is nasty.
- 21:20Speaker 1: One thing that was my one saving grace after kind of drowning my sorrows from the last 24 hours, which is like I think they are 11, one team I think they are 12 and one AC champion.
- 21:29Speaker 1: I think they're going to play off.
- 21:30Speaker 1: I picked him in the playoff, I put them in my playoff for and if that's true, lsu can still have a great season.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Great season including winning the West, including having a shot at a Georgia or Tennessee, which I would love If we, if we, you know, because because of our schedule, alabama is the only other team that really has high caliber guys like Florida State.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Johnny Wilson, keon Coleman, trey Benson, jordan Travis those are all guys playing on Sunday and they are they're Jane Bell.
- 21:59Speaker 1: That is an awesome, awesome offense and they're going to score.
- 22:02Speaker 1: So a lot of ACC fans listening having your fun at LSU expense.
- 22:06Speaker 1: I don't blame you.
- 22:06Speaker 1: We could you go ahead, but don't throw stones, man.
- 22:09Speaker 1: He's going to.
- 22:10Speaker 1: He's going to do that to a lot of ACC teams this year.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Yeah, and the Florida State defensive front is really strong, really fast, really aggressive, and LSU defensive front the same on that side.
- 22:21Speaker 2: It's just the difference was Jordan Travis could move around and make make them pay a bit more yeah, and Jaden Daniels really couldn't.
- 22:29Speaker 2: You know, when the rush, when things got hot and heavy, he would, he would pull down and tuck it and sometimes that ended in a great play.
- 22:35Speaker 2: But more often than not it was limited yardage, negative yardage and especially in the run game, like like we touched on.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I was probably happy with LSU's run defense.
- 22:45Speaker 1: I think that's continued to be a strength for us.
- 22:47Speaker 1: But the difference was we couldn't disrupt what Jordan Travis wanted to do enough.
- 22:50Speaker 1: And our second and our and our cornerbacks right now are just limited and we knew that going this season that was going to be the liability, what that looks like, and you just do chestnut.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Zia Alexander are good cornerbacks, SEC quality cornerback, but they are going against studs.
- 23:06Speaker 2: NFL studs.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Kia Coleman for Florida State is going to feast all year.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Exactly, he's a stud.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's what happened when they, when they saw a dude's chestnut who was if you look you can watch the film he was in position, but he was they were throwing jump balls, like we're going to him because he can't do it, because by himself he can't guard us.
- 23:21Speaker 1: And that's just, unfortunately, lsu second half adjustments, matt House on defense just didn't make it happen.
- 23:26Speaker 1: But anyway, we get gambling next week.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Well, we'll fix that.
- 23:29Speaker 1: But let's, let's keep it moving, let's talk about a little better news, let's do a good twofer, because obviously Tennessee played UVA in Nashville.
- 23:37Speaker 1: I'm going to start.
- 23:39Speaker 1: I want to start quickly with UVA.
- 23:41Speaker 1: I really liked what the coach said.
- 23:43Speaker 1: He said getting this team on the field is a win and, given tragedy, given the cancels last three games, given they were out there fighting, I think he, I think they were right.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I think that there's a few things I saw that I kind of liked.
- 23:56Speaker 1: I thought Tony Musket had made some good throws.
- 23:59Speaker 1: I felt his connection to fields why receiver is good.
- 24:02Speaker 1: I thought Paris Jones had a little bit of wiggle and I thought in the first half Tennessee came out a little rusty he's class of week one stuff and UVA took advantage a little bit and they were able to put some pressure on them and then pretty much from there on, else it was the UT, the UT experience.
- 24:16Speaker 1: So go ahead, I'm going to go over to you.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Yeah, tony Musket got a lot of moxie.
- 24:20Speaker 2: He can move around, he's, he's not afraid.
- 24:22Speaker 2: The moment's not too big for him.
- 24:24Speaker 2: He's day to day with the shoulder injury, so hopefully they get him back.
- 24:27Speaker 2: They're going to need him.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Uva's defensive front looked really good.
- 24:31Speaker 2: They are probably the strength of that team and their special teams was was really good.
- 24:37Speaker 2: They they're clearly well coached.
- 24:38Speaker 2: They've got some things they need to work out on offense.
- 24:41Speaker 2: They still they didn't have a lot of time to stretch the field, but they're going to need to do a better job, at least trying to.
- 24:48Speaker 2: And the run game looked pretty decent.
- 24:50Speaker 2: At times Tennessee definitely had some things that needed to be cleaned up but, all things considered, really really good game one for them.
- 25:00Speaker 2: That's kind of what you want as a coach.
- 25:02Speaker 2: There's a lot of strengths, a lot of things that we saw.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Good flashes the offense sputtered out kind of in that mid first half, but good bookends good bookend, drives with touchdowns, running game put up almost 300 yards, pushing the ball on the ground really well.
- 25:22Speaker 2: And some special teams.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Conversely, for us the special teams need to be cleaned up, which I'm not too worried about that.
- 25:28Speaker 2: So, all in all, good performance.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Really happy to see Tennessee's front seven looked faster, stronger, more athletic, more aggressive this year.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Again, you know, against maybe a questionable Virginia offense, but looked faster and rotated a lot more guys.
- 25:44Speaker 2: So I'm really excited to see what they're going to do this year.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Yeah, my general takeaway from watching UT.
- 25:52Speaker 1: I mean, joe Milton was a little, a little jittery, I think I thought in the first half I thought he, he, he, he lacked a little bit of polish, but that's his classic week one stuff and I know you guys get, I think it, austin Payne next week, so he's got another week to kind of fix that up.
- 26:04Speaker 1: But I also I saw the same thing with your front seven to the UVA front was overwhelmed for 60 minutes and there was not time to stretch the field and there was not big holes to run through and there were not wide open basking lanes.
- 26:12Speaker 1: And that's mostly credit.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Uva has some, has has personnel issues up front that they have to fix.
- 26:19Speaker 1: But it's mostly credit to UT front seven.
- 26:20Speaker 1: That's got to get you excited.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Going into what is obviously, as you know, sec Gaul, they're replaying some very physical teams up front.
- 26:27Speaker 1: So UT looks like they have the guys in the trenches very much.
- 26:32Speaker 1: The defensive side of all will be well suited for that and from what I did see from the secondary I thought I thought UT guys were in position, that they did reasonably well.
- 26:40Speaker 1: It's again, the sample size is one, the passing threat is limited, but I like what I saw.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Is that your real UT secondary?
- 26:48Speaker 1: Yeah, they weren't tested a lot.
- 26:52Speaker 2: But the two times I think they got beat they were in pretty good position and just you know how to play made didn't get a head turned around that kind of thing.
- 27:00Speaker 2: So yeah, the defense really happy with, which is kind of what you want to see.
- 27:03Speaker 2: I'm not concerned about the offense, not concerned about Joe Milton you know some drops here and there from the wide receivers but definitely not concerned about them and really happy with the run game and we'll get the punk game cleaned up.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Yep, so very much, all right, let's move to our last game that we're going to review.
- 27:24Speaker 1: All right, do you have anything else?
- 27:25Speaker 1: On tech, on UVA, tennessee, we good, no, we're good.
- 27:27Speaker 1: We're on.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Virginia Tech took care of business against ODU a little, sputtered a little bit and pulling away at the very end.
- 27:33Speaker 1: My key observations Ali Jennings, out wide, I think might be that too, they found themselves legitimate weapon.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Happy for that.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Grant Wells actually looked pretty good.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I saw him on some good throws and some good scrambles.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Maybe one of the big things holding him back was a offensive coaching philosophy, but I in general I liked what I saw out of him.
- 27:51Speaker 1: So I'm going to walk back my gloom and doom around him.
- 27:56Speaker 1: You know, calling for Kyron Jones.
- 27:57Speaker 1: I still think Kyron Jones is the future.
- 27:59Speaker 1: I still think this seems to be the future.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I still think Kyron Jones is the future.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I still think this seems to be fighting for ball eligibility.
- 28:05Speaker 1: So it's not a lot on the line with the quarterback, but I understand why the Grant Wells got the job.
- 28:10Speaker 1: I don't like their offensive line.
- 28:12Speaker 1: I don't like their running backs, but things on offensive seem to have gotten better for tech.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Yeah, they put up 36 points.
- 28:20Speaker 2: So you know, even though it's it's ODU, this is a team that we struggled against last year.
- 28:25Speaker 2: So just to put up points and put up yards is nice.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Grant Wells definitely looks to have taken a step in the right direction.
- 28:31Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 28:31Speaker 2: I definitely would have liked to see them progress on the ground, that's.
- 28:37Speaker 2: You know, that's something they're going to need to be able to lean on, especially if he's going to continue to be successful.
- 28:41Speaker 2: They're going to have to to work that ground game.
- 28:43Speaker 2: But, all in all, really solid performance from the Hokies.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Nice.
- 28:46Speaker 1: All right, I think we're done with week one new shift gears and go to week two Yep.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Let's keep train rolling before we do that, time for your trivia question, again brought to you by our good friends at trivia throwdown onlinecom.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Mike, the three winningest coaches for the 50 game minimum, 50 games of at least five years, 50 game minimum Number one Newt Rockney, notre Dame.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Coach number two Frank Leahy, boston.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Sorry, number three is Boston College, notre Dame.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Number two is currently a coach of an FBS program right now.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Who do you think that is the top three?
- 29:27Speaker 1: Winning is coach.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Winning is coached by percentage Newt Rockney.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Percentage by percentage minimum 50 games Newt Rockney is at 881.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Leahy is at 864.
- 29:35Speaker 1: This gentleman is at 880 and he is currently coaching for an FBS program.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Who do you think that?
- 29:43Speaker 2: is.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Lincoln Riley it's not a bad guess.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Ryan Day.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Ryan Day, who's not that good of a coach.
- 29:51Speaker 1: I still don't think One thing we didn't talk about in the check-in, but obviously it's a lot of winning games, but didn't look good against Indiana and we're might be.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Are we starting to see some chinks in the armor?
- 30:00Speaker 1: I'm kind of quietly saying that to myself.
- 30:02Speaker 2: No, no no, this week one stuff, man, we do this every year Like.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Obama didn't look good 23 points against Indiana.
- 30:10Speaker 2: They didn't look good.
- 30:10Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 30:11Speaker 2: I'm not concerned.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Give me a bigger sample size before I start throwing throwing doubt on these top programs like that.
- 30:18Speaker 1: All right, all right, I'll ask you when he gets 100 games we'll re-ask that question.
- 30:21Speaker 1: We'll see where he is on the echelon of those great coaches.
- 30:24Speaker 1: All right, week two.
- 30:24Speaker 1: So let's go ahead.
- 30:26Speaker 1: We two is going to be.
- 30:28Speaker 1: It's not as exciting a week as some weeks week three and week four I look a little better, but there are some gems.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Let's start with the headliner, texas of Bama Spread seven points.
- 30:37Speaker 1: This game is in Tuscaloosa Jalen Milrow against Quinn Ewers All eyes, I think.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Game days already announced there could be a Tuscaloosa.
- 30:44Speaker 1: I'm sure everybody in their mother in the college football universe is going to be in Tuscaloosa.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Bama is opening up as a seven point spread.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Jalen Milrow seems to have a firm grasp on that job.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Texas is one of like the three or four teams that have the dudes to physically and talent wise match.
- 30:58Speaker 1: What's your initial read on this one man?
- 31:00Speaker 1: This is what college football is really all about.
- 31:02Speaker 2: I mean you get these matchups like this.
- 31:03Speaker 2: I mean the upsets are fun, the Duke Clemson was fun, but I mean this is just a fantastically fun matchup.
- 31:09Speaker 2: You know it's hard to know where these teams are right now.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Bama, you know what is their offense going to look like with Milrow?
- 31:15Speaker 2: He is just a beast of an athlete watching him run around.
- 31:17Speaker 2: A guy his size should not be able to run around that fast.
- 31:21Speaker 2: He's physical.
- 31:22Speaker 2: I still question his ability to throw the ball down the field and I wonder what their offense is.
- 31:26Speaker 2: I think he's going to be able to do that.
- 31:27Speaker 2: I think he's going to be able to do that.
- 31:29Speaker 2: I think he's going to be able to do that.
- 31:31Speaker 2: I think he's going to be able to do that.
- 31:33Speaker 2: I think he's going to be able to do that.
- 31:36Speaker 2: I wonder what their offensive scheme is going to look like.
- 31:39Speaker 2: My first thoughts are you know, if you give me kind of a head to head yours or Milrow I really like Quinn Ewers as a better all around quarterback, but even he has a lot to prove.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Yeah, coming off last year, he hasn't quite come into his own yet and you know, I know he was injured a lot last year, but he's still got a little chip on his shoulder, so I'd like to see a little bit more of a coming out party from him.
- 32:06Speaker 2: I fully expect.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Texas to stack the box here and make Milrow try and beat them down the field, because one Texas has the guys in secondary who can go one to one.
- 32:14Speaker 1: You know Alabama, at least right now, does not have a James and Williams, devon Smith, calvin Ridley, all these you know upper echelon receivers have come through.
- 32:21Speaker 1: They don't have that guy right now and I'm not sure Jaylen Milrow is the guy to get that.
- 32:27Speaker 1: So if I'm Texas, I'm stacking the box, I'm putting a spy on Milrow, my best open field tackler, having him spy the whole game and say, fine, let's see, let's see you beat them.
- 32:36Speaker 1: So that's what I think, and I think the difference in this game, when my point is, is what is what is Bama going to be able to do to counter that?
- 32:43Speaker 1: Because I do not think they're going to be able to line up with their big, with their big bruisers and run the ball on this team.
- 32:49Speaker 1: I think Texas is too big and strong with the high end talent.
- 32:52Speaker 1: So I think that's actually going to.
- 32:54Speaker 1: I think the the given where this game will be won or lost, is what Jaylen Milrow could do against his defense.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with you.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I think that's a great way to to to start the game.
- 33:03Speaker 2: As far as the strategy standpoint you line up, you know, make improvement to you.
- 33:06Speaker 2: The book is still out, obviously, and I think that lines up pretty well with what Bama wants to start to do anyway.
- 33:15Speaker 2: So you'll probably see the the game start, maybe a little bit slow, yeah, as they kind of feel each other out and you look back to how this game played out last year.
- 33:24Speaker 2: It's a, you know, two different teams and the DNA in a lot of ways is the same and Bama doesn't have a Bryce Young and a Jameer Gibbs to bail them out.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Last year, Even when Texas took the lead, there was that sense that you know Bryce Young is going to go.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Do Bryce Young things like he did all year?
- 33:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and so who do they turn to this year when that sort of thing happens?
- 33:48Speaker 2: And I don't know who they've got.
- 33:50Speaker 2: So I mean that's going to be really interesting.
- 33:53Speaker 1: It is really interesting.
- 33:54Speaker 1: And the other side of the ball, I mean remember one last year.
- 33:56Speaker 1: They barely lost the game and Quinn Ewers got hurt.
- 33:59Speaker 1: He only played a drive and a half when they knocked out.
- 34:01Speaker 1: I'm of the mind that they win that game If he doesn't get hurt.
- 34:04Speaker 1: I'm going to say it right now I like Texas to win this game straight up.
- 34:07Speaker 1: I know they're 7.0 dogs plus seven.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Get your plus money, get the money line I got my money on.
- 34:12Speaker 1: I think they're going to win it right out.
- 34:14Speaker 1: I think I think Quinn Ewers, their offensive line did not look great against Rice last week, which I think is fine.
- 34:18Speaker 1: It's going to get better week two.
- 34:20Speaker 1: They've got really good receivers and Quinn Ewers is a really good quarterback.
- 34:24Speaker 1: He's going to.
- 34:25Speaker 1: I think I think what, what Alabama can't do is stretch the field.
- 34:30Speaker 1: I don't think with Jalen Milrow, and I think Texas knows that Texas very much can.
- 34:34Speaker 1: They can run the ball and they can stretch the field and they are going to force Bama, who might have the advantage of being at home, and they are obviously loaded on defense as well to cover both and I think, at the end of the day, I think Texas is going to make a couple plays in the passing game.
- 34:48Speaker 1: I think that's going to be.
- 34:49Speaker 1: I think that's offensively going to be the difference.
- 34:51Speaker 1: I think Jalen Milrow's inability to stretch the field against a high quality defense they can't run on.
- 34:56Speaker 1: I think Texas is going to win.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I do too.
- 34:59Speaker 2: I hate to agree with you and it scares me again to you know, I feel like I'm continuing to go to follow this trend, to go against Nick Saban, which is never a good idea.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Downing Saban has not worked out well for LSU Tennessee fans just in general, but I just keep, I just keep doing it, and this is a prime situation.
- 35:19Speaker 2: I don't think it's going to be the last time this year that I do it either.
- 35:21Speaker 2: I think this starts a little bit of a down down slope for them this year.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Still a very dangerous team, obviously, but I do like Texas to win this one.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Let's move on to the next one.
- 35:35Speaker 1: This game is interesting because because of what we saw last week that happened in Boulder, colorado, nebraska, colorado is the two and a half point favorite.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Nebraska, I don't think, is anyone's darling, except for maybe me.
- 35:45Speaker 1: I picked the one in the West which is already looking like a pretty bad pick, but this is going this.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Everything Colorado does is going to draw a lot of attention.
- 35:53Speaker 1: This is going to be that game.
- 35:55Speaker 1: I like Nebraska here a lot for the reasons I was talking about earlier.
- 35:58Speaker 1: In the pod 260 yards rushing, seven yards to carry.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Nebraska's got a lot of problems.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Sims is is a quarterback that leaves you wanting.
- 36:07Speaker 1: In some respects he's not a great quarterback, but he is also a big, strong kid and he can also run the ball.
- 36:12Speaker 1: If I'm Nebraska, if I'm Matt Rule, all I'm saying is play contained defense, keep them in front of us and just run the ball on them.
- 36:19Speaker 1: Keep shoulders Sanders, dylan Edwards, I would say Travis Hender, but that guy doesn't come off the field.
- 36:24Speaker 1: He's going to be out there.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Keep them off the field and just run the ball and control the game and just muck it up.
- 36:32Speaker 1: I think Nebraska, in the classic contrarian play, is going to win this game.
- 36:37Speaker 2: No, see, this is where we disagree.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Good yeah, we are at odds in this game because you're not going to lose 10 to 13 against Minnesota and then come back and beat a Colorado team that just put up that many points and that many yards against TCU.
- 36:54Speaker 2: They're just too explosive.
- 36:56Speaker 2: So I don't care if you're going to line up and run the ball and try to pound it down their throats, because, should your Sanders is just going to throw it over your heads, dylan Edwards and they're going to, they're just going to score some points.
- 37:07Speaker 1: We'll see, we'll see.
- 37:08Speaker 1: I'm telling you, football is one and lost in the trenches, don't be surprised off.
- 37:13Speaker 1: In Nebraska gets Matt rules first, signature win.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Not going to be getting at your win, not going to be on down the peg, but we'll see.
- 37:18Speaker 1: The next one I'm really excited about is Texas A&M at Miami.
- 37:21Speaker 1: These teams are French teams that are that have a fair amount of talent, could be national title contenders If things go their way they're.
- 37:30Speaker 1: You know they're probably both third or fourth the pecking order within their respective conferences.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Give or take, and they certainly could do that.
- 37:36Speaker 1: This is me the first big test for both of them.
- 37:40Speaker 1: I like this game a lot because both these interactions are actually again have a lot of high end talent.
- 37:44Speaker 1: I like what I last week A&M, kind of kind of Wegman that's the word Wegman, wegman, thank you.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Look, looked good by Petrino's new office guy on this other side, tyler van Dyke, has seen they have shaken off his woes.
- 37:57Speaker 1: They throttled Miami in the Miami bowl.
- 37:59Speaker 1: They played Miami Ohio BM 31 to three.
- 38:02Speaker 1: I'm really, really interested to see this game because I think one of these two teams last year they played.
- 38:09Speaker 1: The score was like 17 to six and one.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Both teams fell apart anyway, finished like five and seven and six and either teams.
- 38:15Speaker 1: I think one of these teams is a 10 winner, 11 game winner potentially, and I think this is going to be kind of moment we're going to figure out which one.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Yeah, both of these teams come into this game with a lot of talent, a lot of buzz from the off season, a lot of eyes on them but a lot of question marks, and they both had a good week one performance.
- 38:34Speaker 2: So it's just one of those games like you don't really know what to expect.
- 38:37Speaker 2: It's a five point spread, but could go either way and blow out fashion for either team.
- 38:43Speaker 2: So I'm going to be honest.
- 38:44Speaker 2: You know this is a tough one to pick for me.
- 38:46Speaker 2: I like the Keynes ground attack.
- 38:48Speaker 2: They went for like 250 three touchdowns, all by different players.
- 38:52Speaker 2: I like what they're doing on the ground and we've seen Van Dyke air it out and show a ton of promise through the air.
- 39:00Speaker 2: I mean, we know.
- 39:00Speaker 2: We know he's got the talent.
- 39:01Speaker 2: I don't know what happened to him last year and how badly he underperformed at times.
- 39:07Speaker 2: I don't even know.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Do I have to make a pick on this?
- 39:11Speaker 1: one.
- 39:11Speaker 1: No, you know, I picked the other game because I just wanted to.
- 39:15Speaker 1: But no, yeah, that's what I'm looking for.
- 39:18Speaker 2: And I want to see a and m's how their offense continues to grow under Petrino, because we all know how creative he can be.
- 39:24Speaker 2: So, yeah, this will be a really interesting matchup for the weekend.
- 39:28Speaker 2: No idea what to expect.
- 39:30Speaker 1: So keep your eyes on that one for sure.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Other game, only a game I really want to talk about in the home teams obviously Ole Miss minus seven at Tulane in New Orleans.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Tulane Michael is probably the best G five school.
- 39:42Speaker 1: They, they I mean, if you're still doubting them, michael Pratt took towards the cotton bull and beat USC.
- 39:48Speaker 1: They are very good.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Michael Pratt is an awesome quarterback, bar none.
- 39:52Speaker 1: You know.
- 39:52Speaker 1: The gap between we talk is all the time.
- 39:56Speaker 1: The gap between FCS and FBS is diminishing.
- 39:58Speaker 1: The gap between F, the power five, and the G five is as well, which is why so many G five teams are jumping up to the power five, because of power four, because they are good enough.
- 40:08Speaker 1: This game is going to have a lot of offense over under 63.
- 40:10Speaker 1: My pick is this is going to go way over.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Vegas is projecting this game to be 3528 in favor of Ole Miss.
- 40:17Speaker 1: I'm not sure who's going to win or lose, but they're going to go fast.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin is going to go for and forth down all kinds of time.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Tulane knows they're playing out of conference game.
- 40:25Speaker 1: They're playing with house money.
- 40:26Speaker 1: They're going to be super aggressive.
- 40:28Speaker 1: I don't know who's going to win, but I'm taking the over 63.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Yeah, actually that's a lot of points, but I actually really like that call.
- 40:35Speaker 2: I mean, ole Miss went for like 667 yards last week.
- 40:40Speaker 1: And you know Link.
- 40:41Speaker 2: Kiffin is not afraid to get silly and we've seen that they've got you know.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Like you mentioned, quinch on Junk is we've seen that they've got some players.
- 40:49Speaker 2: This will be a fun one.
- 40:50Speaker 2: It should be a wild one.
- 40:51Speaker 2: I don't know who will win, again I would, you know, feed to the fire.
- 40:56Speaker 2: I'd take Ole Miss, but yeah, that's definitely a one to watch before we finish up and move on Homertime.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Any thoughts on Oregon, texas Tech Oregon just put up like a modern scoring record of 81 last week.
- 41:11Speaker 2: I do have thoughts on this and.
- 41:13Speaker 2: I think they're only like a six point spread.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Yes, that's that Texas Tech team.
- 41:16Speaker 1: That is, that was exactly my point.
- 41:18Speaker 1: Um, they, I think.
- 41:19Speaker 1: I think I saw this morning they were five and a half.
- 41:21Speaker 1: That is the weirdest line I've ever seen, and the general rule of thumb is, when you see a line that you don't understand, lean into it.
- 41:28Speaker 1: So, like the play would be Texas Tech, five and a half, I, in good reason.
- 41:33Speaker 1: I'm having a hell of a time understanding that.
- 41:35Speaker 1: I think Wilstein's off the off, the coordinator at Oregon, is awesome.
- 41:39Speaker 1: I think bow nicks is legitimate, heisman Kennedy, I think they are flat out better.
- 41:42Speaker 1: But also think, going to Lubbock, I think that place is going to be bonkers, absolutely bonkers.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Um, I'm definitely paying attention to this game from a betting's perspective, though I got nothing.
- 41:52Speaker 1: I couldn't tell you.
- 41:53Speaker 1: I you know, oregon probably is better, they'll probably win, but we have seen crazier things happen on a hot Texas nights.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Yeah, this is again.
- 42:02Speaker 2: This is college football in a nutshell.
- 42:03Speaker 2: This Oregon team just put up 81 points, texas Tech just lost to Wyoming.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's a six point spread.
- 42:11Speaker 2: I mean, that's if that's not even worth drawing.
- 42:14Speaker 2: You know, just drawing some attention.
- 42:15Speaker 2: I don't know what is.
- 42:16Speaker 2: I do think bonics continues to ball out this weekend regardless, did they?
- 42:21Speaker 1: see someone on Twitter.
- 42:21Speaker 1: I think they called it wounded dog syndrome.
- 42:23Speaker 1: It's just like it's a classic spot where Texas tech comes home after their uh, their double overtime loss to Wyoming and Laramie, and they're just hot and limited and that'll get your attention.
- 42:33Speaker 1: It's going to get their attention and they're going to get.
- 42:34Speaker 1: They're going to give Oregon their absolute best, and if Oregon doesn't take them seriously, if Oregon starts slow, if that crowd is in it, um, for the entire first half, I mean, I, you know, guns up right Raiders could easily get it, could easily get it done.
- 42:47Speaker 2: So yeah, I think you have to kind of attribute that Texas tech week one game to that that classic.
- 42:52Speaker 2: You know that that week one, that rust factor, you go on the road, um, you lose a close one, you don't play your best ball, and I think you know Vegas is telling us is that there's still believers in the red Raiders and uh, still should be a good game, yep.
- 43:05Speaker 1: All right, let's go ahead and do.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Uh sorry, what's sorry, what the?
- 43:09Speaker 1: Uh?
- 43:09Speaker 1: The four main teams.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Hmm, that smells good.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Must be time for some of that home cooking Shut up Mark Frez and friends of the pod patreon.
- 43:17Speaker 1: uh, subscriber as well.
- 43:18Speaker 1: Uh, so I'm going to go quickly through LSU.
- 43:20Speaker 1: They're playing gambling at home, first home game of season.
- 43:22Speaker 1: Get right game.
- 43:23Speaker 1: I think we're a 37 point favorite.
- 43:24Speaker 1: Um, there's really nothing that I that I can see or not see in this game.
- 43:28Speaker 1: It's going to make me feel better.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Um, the week afters we've got Mississippi state, missouri and Florida and Arkansas, I think as well.
- 43:36Speaker 1: So we're going to get the LSU's and get to the SEC stretch pretty soon.
- 43:39Speaker 1: This week it's gambling.
- 43:41Speaker 1: I'm sure they're going to win.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Um, I just I don't have any pertinence about it at this point.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Wow, yeah, tennessee's got Austin P.
- 43:47Speaker 2: Um, it's a, it's an in state payday for those guys.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Uh, there's not even a spread on this game.
- 43:53Speaker 2: Starters really shouldn't even be in in the second half.
- 43:56Speaker 2: Um, you know, look to clean some things up, some to work on some things, get your offense right, get your timing right and get ready to head down to the swamp.
- 44:05Speaker 1: Yep, I think it's yeah that is that Florida week three.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Yep, what are we three?
- 44:09Speaker 1: Okay, night game in the swamp.
- 44:10Speaker 1: Night game in the swamp, that's which is a tough love to see it.
- 44:13Speaker 1: You love to see it from a fan perspective as a Tennessee fan, or that was you fan, or that was you fan.
- 44:17Speaker 1: It's not a spot.
- 44:19Speaker 1: You want your team to be there.
- 44:20Speaker 1: But, um, we'll be, we'll have some fun with that one.
- 44:23Speaker 1: We'll talk about that one next week.
- 44:24Speaker 1: All right, it's cool, let's move down.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Let's move down to our friends in Charlottesville.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Coming from the bottom of the ACC.
- 44:30Speaker 2: It's time to talk about the Virginia Cavaliers.
- 44:33Speaker 1: UVA is hosting JMU, james Madison University, another in state foe.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Uh, fps, probably the second best G five team right now, looking like the Kings of the Sunbelt.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Um, I'm going to go ahead and say it I think JMU is actually the best team in Virginia and you and I picked a weird year to pick the two best Virginia schools without picking JMU, because JMU actually might be um the best team.
- 44:54Speaker 1: They're not going to be afraid of anything.
- 44:56Speaker 1: Um, uh, uva has to offer.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Um, I would do what he got.
- 45:01Speaker 2: Uh, yeah.
- 45:02Speaker 2: So a lot of this definitely depends on the health of of musket, who's day to day.
- 45:09Speaker 2: I got to think you know he's dealing with a I think it looked like a a collarbone shoulder not looking good for him.
- 45:15Speaker 2: I think UVA's defense is going to continue to be pretty stout.
- 45:19Speaker 2: But you're right, yeah, jmu is a really good team.
- 45:22Speaker 2: They put up 38 points in Harrison Berg and week one and they're going to be tough to handle.
- 45:27Speaker 2: I think UVA is a touchdown dog at home.
- 45:31Speaker 2: So yeah, that's all that Um yeah, I don't know I'd have to take JMU.
- 45:36Speaker 2: I don't like the spot that UVA is in.
- 45:38Speaker 2: They're kind of banged up.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Uh, you know, they physically got dominated this last week.
- 45:43Speaker 2: I'm not sure that was the best way for them to get right heading into the season.
- 45:48Speaker 2: No, Um yeah, they might have done better to trade down.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Um, you know, for directional school, get a win, get some, get some, uh, some, confidence.
- 46:00Speaker 1: It's a good momentum.
- 46:01Speaker 1: Winds are going to be tough, tough to come by this year, also this season.
- 46:03Speaker 1: Uh, they're doing a special ceremony, um, ahead of the game.
- 46:06Speaker 1: Uh, I think I think it's really great.
- 46:08Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to see what that looks like.
- 46:09Speaker 1: Um, I I hope Charlottesville turns out.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Obviously, harrisonburg is literally like an hour away, like just a straight drive over up 33.
- 46:17Speaker 1: Um, so I I expect that I expect this to be a lot of purple and gold in those stands as well.
- 46:21Speaker 1: I will say this just from everything else aside, it is cool to see Virginia schools fighting, fighting to play one another.
- 46:28Speaker 1: Yeah, you know this.
- 46:30Speaker 1: We just talked about a second ago.
- 46:31Speaker 1: The gap between FBF, p5, p4 next year and G6, whatever it's going to be um is small.
- 46:38Speaker 1: So these are this is a good football game.
- 46:40Speaker 1: If you're a, if you're a fan of Virginia football just the state of Virginia football and Mike and I clearly are um, this is good.
- 46:46Speaker 1: This is good action.
- 46:47Speaker 2: So it's good for it's good for the state and the alumni A lot of good bragging rights.
- 46:51Speaker 2: I mean, you're going to have tailgates with mixtures of fans all over the place.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Family's, couples, friends yeah, went to JMU, went to UVA, went to Virginia tech.
- 46:58Speaker 2: Everyone has an opinion about these games and that's just fun.
- 47:02Speaker 2: It's unfortunate that, um, that UVA is kind of in a bad spot right now.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Uh, all right, let's move to the last one.
- 47:11Speaker 2: Looking to return to their glory of the early 2000s.
- 47:14Speaker 1: Let's talk about the Virginia tech Hokies.
- 47:17Speaker 1: So this game is particularly exciting because Mike and I are both going to the game together.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Those of you who don't know I've tagged along to uh, mike and his Tennessee buddies to a bunch of times.
- 47:27Speaker 1: Going to college football games with Mike is one of my favorite things to do.
- 47:31Speaker 1: I'm so excited we get to do it again this season.
- 47:33Speaker 1: We both have very busy families with kids and our teams are far away.
- 47:36Speaker 1: It's going to do very often.
- 47:37Speaker 1: Um, this is this your first game at Lane.
- 47:39Speaker 1: You've been to a game attack.
- 47:41Speaker 2: I've been.
- 47:41Speaker 2: I've been.
- 47:41Speaker 2: It's been a very long time.
- 47:43Speaker 2: It's been probably since my, I guess since my older sister was in college, so it's been 20 plus years.
- 47:51Speaker 1: Okay, so it's been a minute.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Yeah, so we're.
- 47:54Speaker 1: So we're going to the game together.
- 47:55Speaker 1: It is the orange out there playing Purdue Is there.
- 47:57Speaker 1: I don't know if there's a line out on this game, but I actually have.
- 47:59Speaker 2: I think it's Hokies, uh one.
- 48:01Speaker 1: Hokies, my so so almost a pick them.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Purdue also.
- 48:04Speaker 1: Purdue also might be coming in angry.
- 48:05Speaker 1: They, they, they.
- 48:07Speaker 1: They lost at home to Fresno State last week.
- 48:09Speaker 1: Yep, um, they, they.
- 48:10Speaker 1: Their offense did move pretty well.
- 48:12Speaker 1: Defense did not look great.
- 48:13Speaker 1: So, um, you know week one things, but we will see what Purdue looks like.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Um, going to this matchup, I'm I'd like to see the defense get short up.
- 48:22Speaker 1: I think the defense has got to.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Purdue is going to present more physical challenges than ODU can.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Yes, full stop.
- 48:30Speaker 1: So I think I'd like to see Virginia Tech get a little tougher, a little more physical on defense to do that.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Uh, I'd like to see Grant Wells continue to play really well, move forward the.
- 48:40Speaker 1: You know, I think you, I both, are pretty bullish on Kyron drones, but this might be the grant well show for a while.
- 48:45Speaker 1: So let's see Grant Wells go out and earn this gig.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Yeah, agreed.
- 48:50Speaker 2: I mean they're not going to win this game, or many games, if Grant Wells doesn't continue to play well.
- 48:55Speaker 2: The good news is he looked like he took that step Obviously a big step up going against Purdue.
- 49:00Speaker 2: Purdue's a solid team.
- 49:01Speaker 2: They're pretty well coached.
- 49:02Speaker 2: They can put up some points.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Virginia Tech's going to have to do better on the ground and they're going to have to focus more on the ground.
- 49:09Speaker 2: They can't just give it up and let Wells throw it 40 times.
- 49:13Speaker 2: They're going to have to let Toot and carry the ball and really commit to that.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and the thing is, obviously I appreciate Toot for what he is, but I don't think he's a super dynamic back.
- 49:23Speaker 1: I think what he is is he's going to give you exactly what the offensive line can give you, but we haven't seen him play much.
- 49:30Speaker 1: So maybe he's got another gear, Maybe he can really, maybe he can be a game breaker that they're going to need.
- 49:35Speaker 1: Grant Wells has a little bit of wiggle too.
- 49:38Speaker 1: I watched him on a couple scramble plays.
- 49:39Speaker 1: He's faster than I thought he was.
- 49:40Speaker 1: I don't think he had a chance to break, contain and move very often.
- 49:44Speaker 1: Last season In the ODU game he showed some flashes with his legs.
- 49:48Speaker 1: So I think that's going to be I mean, I think maybe some plan keepers that kind of thing might be in the mix as well and obviously, just get the ball to those receivers.
- 49:57Speaker 1: They've got some playmakers.
- 49:59Speaker 1: The one thing I feel really good about right now on Virginia Tech's offense is those wide outs.
- 50:03Speaker 1: So let's get them the ball.
- 50:04Speaker 1: Let's get some wide receiver screens, let's take some deep shots.
- 50:07Speaker 1: Let's give Allie Jennings a chance to really contribute.
- 50:10Speaker 1: I think that's going to be the key to Virginia Tech's win.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Virginia Tech's whole game is utilizing.
- 50:16Speaker 1: I think they are the best thing they had.
- 50:17Speaker 1: The offense has going for them, so let's get them the ball.
- 50:20Speaker 2: And Purdue, little suspect on D.
- 50:22Speaker 2: You know they can move the ball, they can sling it around a little bit, not going to be too heavy in the ground game, but they they're going to be a little suspect in defense.
- 50:31Speaker 2: I think they were ranked like 113th or something in the nation on D.
- 50:34Speaker 2: So the Hokies should be able to move the ball and I like the Hokies better on the defensive side of the ball.
- 50:40Speaker 2: So I think the Hokies take this one with with the winning the turnover battle, winning with defense.
- 50:46Speaker 2: You know the old school tech ball with some special teams baby, but I like the Hokies edging them out here.
- 50:53Speaker 1: Do you know, do we have any idea, what the point total is?
- 50:55Speaker 1: I mean, the more we think, the more we're talking about it.
- 50:57Speaker 1: I kind of think they're going to over under 50.
- 51:00Speaker 1: Over, under 50 is one point.
- 51:01Speaker 1: So they're calling for a 24 27 type game.
- 51:04Speaker 1: I could see that I could.
- 51:05Speaker 1: I couldn't.
- 51:06Speaker 1: I wouldn't be surprised at all to see it hit the over as well, given Virginia Tech has made some marginal improvements on defensive and a couple guys in their secondary they got a defensive end I really like.
- 51:16Speaker 1: There's still some holes that they the Purdue is going to try and attack and, of course, purdue is obviously dealing with their own defensive woes as well.
