- 0:14You know, once a person makes a commitment to
- 0:16follow Christ, I mean radical and all indecision,
- 0:19there's a process God uses to transform us. Well,
- 0:22today I'm going to address what I believe is
- 0:25one of the most neglected areas of spiritual
- 0:27growth. Because once we're aware and willing
- 0:29to engage, it results in amazing life change.
- 0:33Stay with me. What if the secret to lasting change
- 0:37isn't a longer to -do list, but a completely
- 0:40different kind of list? A to -be list. I'm Dave
- 0:44Drew, and this is Living on the Edge with Chip
- 0:46Ingram. We're continuing our series called Free
- 0:48at Last, How to Break Out of a Destructive Lifestyle.
- 0:51And if you've missed any part so far, you can
- 0:54always catch up online at livingontheedge .org.
- 0:58Today, Chip gets very practical about two areas
- 1:01where spiritual training changes everything.
- 1:03hard work, and the words that come out of your
- 1:05mouth. Now here's Chip with today's message titled,
- 1:09The Power of Spiritual Training in the Transformation
- 1:12Process. Listen carefully. Only God can transform
- 1:17a life. Only by God's supernatural grace can
- 1:24a life be authentically changed from the inside
- 1:27out. But he chooses to never do it alone. It's
- 1:35a joint effort. Transformation, the miracle of
- 1:38life change, everything we've talked about is
- 1:41a joint effort. It's completely and fully by
- 1:44grace, but we have a part. Notice that even in
- 1:49nature, God points this out. I came across an
- 1:52article, talks about a man who found a cocoon
- 1:54of a butterfly, and one day he saw a small opening
- 1:57appear. He sat and he watched the butterfly for
- 2:00several hours as it struggled to force its body
- 2:03through that small little hole. Then it seemed
- 2:06to stop making any progress. It appeared as if
- 2:09it had gotten as far as it could and could get
- 2:11no farther. So the man decided to help the butterfly.
- 2:14He took a pair of scissors and he snipped the
- 2:16remaining bit of the cocoon and then the butterfly
- 2:19easily emerged. But it had a swollen body and
- 2:23small shriveled wings. The man continued to watch
- 2:26the butterfly because he expected that any moment
- 2:29its wings would expand and it would fly off.
- 2:33But it didn't happen. In fact, the butterfly
- 2:36spent the rest of its life crawling around with
- 2:38a swollen body and shriveled wings. It was never
- 2:43able to fly. What the man in his kindness and
- 2:46haste did not understand was the restricting
- 2:49cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly.
- 2:53Through that tiny little opening was God's way
- 2:56of forcing the fluid from the body down into
- 2:59the butterfly's wings so that it would be ready
- 3:02for flight once it achieved its freedom from
- 3:05the cocoon. See, God made the caterpillar, that
- 3:10green worm, if you will. That green worm had
- 3:14exactly the same DNA as the butterfly. That DNA
- 3:19told that caterpillar when and what season to
- 3:22go to on that milkweed, when to form a cocoon,
- 3:25and it's all the DNA inside of that that created
- 3:29from this caterpillar into a butterfly. But there
- 3:32came a time of struggle and responsibility for
- 3:35metamorphosis to occur where that butterfly had
- 3:39to make every effort and struggle to cooperate
- 3:42with its design in order to fulfill its purpose.
- 3:47And the exact same thing is true of us. Open
- 3:50your Bibles, if you will, do a quick review before
- 3:53we jump in to Ephesians chapter four. Let's go
- 3:56all the way back to the beginning of this series.
- 3:59Chapters one, two, and three is the DNA that
- 4:03God has put us, all that he has done for us in
- 4:06Christ. Chapter four opens up where he begins
- 4:09to talk about our responsibility. He says, as
- 4:12a prisoner of the Lord, then I urge you. to live
- 4:16a life worthy of the calling that you received.
- 4:19And then he begins to describe what it looks
- 4:21like in relationships. Be completely humble and
- 4:24gentle and patient, bearing with one another
- 4:26in love. And then notice, make every effort to
- 4:32keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond
- 4:34of peace. Then we talked about... What Christ
- 4:38has accomplished. We talked about the role of
- 4:40the church. We talked about that sort of three
- 4:43-fold process where we put off, have your mind
- 4:45renewed and put on. And then pick it up with
- 4:48me in verse 25 as the Apostle Paul goes through
- 4:51five specific training stations. Therefore, each
- 4:54of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully
- 4:57to his neighbor. For we're all members of one
- 4:59body. We talked about be honest. You go into
- 5:03training for integrity. In your anger, do not
- 5:05sin. Do not let the sun go down on your anger.
- 5:08And do not give the devil a foothold. And then
- 5:11he goes on. He who has been stealing must steal
- 5:15no longer, but must work with your hands doing
- 5:17something useful that he may have something to
- 5:19share with those in need. Do not let any unwholesome
- 5:23talk come out of your mouths, but only what's
- 5:25helpful, the building up of others according
- 5:27to their needs, that it may benefit those who
- 5:30listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of
- 5:32God. with whom you were sealed for the day of
- 5:35redemption. Get rid of all bitterness and rage
- 5:38and anger and brawling and slander along with
- 5:41every form of malice and be kind, compassionate
- 5:45to one another, forgiving one another just as
- 5:49God in Christ also has forgiven you. Now, I want
- 5:55you to see this combination. Psalm 77, 14 says,
- 5:59you are the God who performs miracles. You display
- 6:02your power among the people. God does miracles.
- 6:06He's done them in the past. He does them today.
- 6:09That's God's part, the supernatural. He does
- 6:12miracles among us. But look at the next passage
- 6:15in Romans 8. He does miracles in us. The spirit
- 6:19of God who raised Jesus from the dead, amazingly,
- 6:22lives in you. Therefore, dear brothers and sisters,
- 6:27you have no obligation to do what your sinful
- 6:31nature urges you to do. God does miracles in
- 6:35the world. He parts red seas. He's raised people
- 6:39from the dead, but he doesn't just do miracles
- 6:41among us. He does miracles in us. The same spirit
- 6:46that raised Christ from the dead, when you put
- 6:48your faith in him, dwells inside of you. We don't
- 6:52have to sin anymore. We will, we will have struggles.
- 6:57But you've been forgiven. The penalty of sin's
- 7:00been paid. The power of sin has been broken.
- 7:03And now the spirit of the living God that created
- 7:06all that there is, if you're a follower of Jesus,
- 7:09lives inside of you. That's God's part. Now notice
- 7:14the apostle Paul says, but that's not how it
- 7:15all works. Philippians chapter four, he says,
- 7:18I can do, that's something he does, I can do
- 7:21all things, but how? Through Christ who gives
- 7:25me strength. In fact, the next passage in Philippians
- 7:282, he kind of puts the whole package together.
- 7:30There's God's part, there's our part, there's
- 7:34dependency, it's all of grace, and yet we have
- 7:37to make every effort. And so he commands us,
- 7:39work out your salvation with fear and trembling.
- 7:44Then notice the second half. For it is God who
- 7:48is at work in you, both to will and to work for
- 7:53his good pleasure. Be diligent. Work hard. Refuse
- 8:01to take shortcuts. It says, he who steals must
- 8:06steal no longer, but rather he must labor, performing
- 8:10with his own hands what is good. Then notice
- 8:12the purpose clause. So that he may have something
- 8:15to share with the one who has need. Training
- 8:19objective is financial stewardship and rooted
- 8:22in this is our work ethic. The training command
- 8:25is steal no longer. Grammatically, he's saying,
- 8:28people in this particular church were stealing.
- 8:31Grammatically, it's stop stealing, knock it off.
- 8:36Stealing was rampant in the ancient world. Now,
- 8:38I think it's same today. But when people would
- 8:42go to the Roman baths and they would leave their
- 8:44clothes and their valuables or when they went
- 8:46to the market. So Christians, they came to Christ
- 8:49in the city, but it was a habitual pattern. And
- 8:52they would steal, so he stopped stealing. The
- 8:55training action is you're to put off stealing.
- 8:59Then there's a renewal of your mind. Recognize
- 9:02the value and the purpose of work. Recognize
- 9:07the value and the purpose of work. And then what
- 9:11we're gonna see in just a minute, he's gonna
- 9:12say, stop stealing. Recognize the value of work
- 9:16and the purpose of work. And then he says, now
- 9:19I want you to put on, I want you to learn to
- 9:20work. or to labor, and he's talking about real
- 9:24physical labor here, but unto the Lord. I want
- 9:27you to work as though you're working for an audience
- 9:29of one. So let's back up and think through just
- 9:32a little bit. The issue behind stealing, obviously,
- 9:36I'm guessing that there's not a lot of you that
- 9:38are going, oh, my lands, you know. Friday night,
- 9:42I held up that guy at the ATM. I've just got
- 9:44to knock that off, you know? I didn't use a knife
- 9:48or anything. It was a plastic gun, but I just
- 9:50gotta quit doing that, you know? Or, you know,
- 9:53hopefully there's not like just a handful of
- 9:55you that are saying, you know, it's tax time
- 9:57and I've embezzled a few thousand dollars or
- 9:59a few hundred thousand dollars and I'm glad I
- 10:01came today because I need to repent of that.
- 10:03Now, by the way, if you're stealing in those
- 10:06ways, for sure, you need to repent from that.
- 10:10But we steal in lots of ways. See, behind stealing
- 10:14is the real thing that needs to be addressed
- 10:16for most of us is the shortcut mentality. See,
- 10:19at the end of the day, if you went to work for
- 10:22two weeks and they put X numbers of dollars out
- 10:26of your paycheck in a bank account, and then
- 10:28you want to go to dinner or go shopping and you
- 10:31go to an ATM and you pull out $100 because that
- 10:34represents what you've worked. And as you take
- 10:37that $100 out, someone stops you and either puts
- 10:39a gun or a knife to your throat and says, give
- 10:41me your money. Number one, give it to them. Heroes
- 10:47end up dead. But you did the work. They took
- 10:53your money. At the heart of stealing is we want
- 10:57the product without the process. We want the
- 11:00product without the price. And for many of you,
- 11:03the stealing is not about money and the stealing
- 11:06isn't in your vocational work. A lot of us want
- 11:09a really great marriage. but we don't want to
- 11:12put in the work. A lot of us want kids that really
- 11:14love God and turn out well and tell the truth
- 11:17and have great relationships, but we don't spend
- 11:19any time with them around the table. We don't
- 11:21tuck them in bed. We don't teach them. A lot
- 11:24of us really want our bodies to be low in cholesterol
- 11:26and low in fat, and we want to be healthy and
- 11:29live long lives. We just don't want to do the
- 11:31hard work of working out or watching what we
- 11:33eat. You get the idea? A lot of us has overwhelming
- 11:37jobs with demand, demand, demand, demand. And
- 11:40we steal from relationships and we steal from
- 11:43other areas to fulfill responsibilities and jobs
- 11:46to either please people or be addicted to the
- 11:49income that it brings. See, now stealing has
- 11:52a lot to do with all of us, doesn't it? Now,
- 11:55here's what you need to understand. You need
- 11:57to understand the value of work. The value of
- 12:02diligence. Before sin entered the world, we were...
- 12:07told to work. So work has value. It's not like
- 12:10TGIF. It's not like the mentality we've been
- 12:13inundated with our culture is that the mentality
- 12:17that what most of our culture tells us is do
- 12:20as little as possible to get as much as possible
- 12:24for the greatest income as possible unless you
- 12:27own the business. And see, we then We do the
- 12:33same thing in those other relationships like
- 12:34I shared. We want the results, but the diligence,
- 12:38the line upon line, the precept upon precept,
- 12:41the getting up, the putting one foot after another,
- 12:43it's very difficult to learn to work hard on
- 12:47the things that are hard for us to work on. And
- 12:51so he says, you gotta understand the value of
- 12:53work. Jesus, for the first 30 years, worked with
- 12:58his hands. He learned that things don't happen
- 13:02overnight. Jesus, though he was fully God and
- 13:05fully man, as a little boy, sat with the rabbis
- 13:09and he memorized the passages and he asked questions
- 13:12and he did the work to learn to grow. He grew
- 13:14in stature before God and before men. So there's
- 13:19a great value in work. But notice also in this
- 13:21passage, the purpose of work. The purpose of
- 13:25work just isn't upward economic mobility. He
- 13:29says, you who steal, steal no longer. Stop taking
- 13:32shortcuts, but work with your hands. What's the
- 13:35last phrase? So that you may be able to share.
- 13:40Interesting little Greek word, the idea of sharing
- 13:42with those in need. It has the idea of doing
- 13:45it personally. This isn't sharing as in I get
- 13:49some money and I give it to an agency or an organization
- 13:51or even to the church. This is working with your
- 13:54hands. And as you work with your hands, You meet
- 13:58people that have actual needs, and part of the
- 14:01reason that you work before God is you want to
- 14:04have some extra to help other people personally.
- 14:08See, it goes from saying, I'm not gonna steal,
- 14:12to I wanna be generous. I wanna be like God.
- 14:16I wanna be like Christ. Remember, as a prisoner
- 14:18of the Lord, I say to you, no longer live in
- 14:23this way, but walk in a manner worthy. That means
- 14:26you're gonna look, and think and talk and share
- 14:32the way Jesus does. The training apparatus that's
- 14:38been most helpful to me is I'm gonna encourage
- 14:40you to write out a to -be list. Now, I don't
- 14:44know about you, but I've learned to work best
- 14:47because of mentors. My first mentor was my father.
- 14:52Say no more. I mean, there's some of us that
- 14:55grew up with, I learned how to work. He passed
- 14:59it on, and by the way, you know, there's some
- 15:01things about my dad that weren't real helpful.
- 15:03This was very helpful. Son, that's okay, and
- 15:06I'll try it again the right way. Anybody remember
- 15:08that? When I taught my kids early on, it wasn't
- 15:12just about cleaning this or doing the garage
- 15:15or doing their room or making their bed. It was
- 15:18they needed to learn that the diligence, not
- 15:21taking shortcuts, is a discipline and it's difficult.
- 15:24But as you go into training, you can learn how
- 15:27to do it. So probably one of the best gifts Teresa
- 15:29and I gave our kids was teaching them to work.
- 15:32And early on, I mean, it was terrible. They would
- 15:34vacuum, and then you'd say, you know what? You
- 15:36have to move these things and vacuum them, not
- 15:39just go around them. Or, you know, they needed
- 15:41to clean their room, and you'd open the closet,
- 15:42and you realize it looked clean when you walked
- 15:44in, but it looks like a mess there. And so you
- 15:47teach them. You know, you look at a homework
- 15:50paper, and you go, oh, my lands. I mean, you'd
- 15:53have to have x -ray vision to figure out what
- 15:54this says. You know, rewrite it. Do it right.
- 15:57It takes time. And when I say a to -be list,
- 16:02here's one of my biggest mentors, other than
- 16:04my father and a few other people. I shared with
- 16:07you, Professor Howard Hendricks was a great mentor
- 16:10in my life. In my third year of school, there
- 16:12was about 10 or 12 of us. We met with him for
- 16:15lunch. And we'd have a brown bag lunch, and we
- 16:17would talk. And I was working full -time, going
- 16:20to school full -time, had three kids, and had
- 16:23just started out pastoring a church. And so,
- 16:25I mean, my life was crazy. I mean, it was up
- 16:28four in the morning, and you study here, then
- 16:30you do this with the church, and then you drive
- 16:32in, and then you go to school, and then you try
- 16:34and be a good dad. I mean, it was nuts. And I'll
- 16:38never forget him talking about men, the problem
- 16:40with a lot of your lives, because we'd ask him
- 16:42questions for an hour every Wednesday afternoon
- 16:44over lunch. He says, you need to... create a
- 16:48to -be list instead of just a to -do list. I
- 16:51mean, my to -do lists were this long and I could
- 16:52never get them all done. And I'll never forget,
- 16:57you might be thinking, what do you mean by a
- 16:59to -be list? He said, you will never be more
- 17:03loved than you're loved right now. You'll never
- 17:07get all your to -dos done. And your life isn't
- 17:10based on your performance. So what you need to
- 17:12do is get very, very clear about who do you want
- 17:15to be? Who do you want to become? And I don't
- 17:20know how this works, but I'm praying. I prayed
- 17:23for you all today that this will happen in your
- 17:26life. I don't know how it is when certain truths,
- 17:29it's not like I never heard it before, but you
- 17:31know how they ignite inside your mind and then
- 17:33somehow they get down into your heart and you
- 17:35feel compelled, I have to act on this. And I
- 17:38remember driving away from that little seminary
- 17:40and stopping at a Dairy Queen in a little town
- 17:42called Crandall, and then on the back of a napkin
- 17:45said, I'm either gonna make a to -be list and
- 17:47follow it, or I'm gonna keep living this crazy
- 17:49life where I'm not quite the husband I need to
- 17:50be, and I'm not getting enough sleep, and I'm
- 17:52not working out anymore, and I've got school
- 17:54over here, and life is crazy. And in the back
- 17:56of a little napkin, I said, I want to be a man
- 17:58of God. I want to be a great husband. I want
- 18:03to be a great dad. I want to be a great friend.
- 18:08I want to be a great pastor. And I want to be
- 18:12someone who takes care of my body. And then what
- 18:16Prof. Hendricks said was, you take those and
- 18:19you stick them in your schedule before you do
- 18:21anything else. Sure, you'll still have a lot
- 18:25of to -dos to do. But when you stick those in,
- 18:28if you will be diligent. The person you are a
- 18:33year, three years, five years, 10 years, that
- 18:35was 30 years ago, literally to the year. And
- 18:39I decide if I'm gonna be a man of God, I'm gonna
- 18:41meet with God at least an hour every morning
- 18:43before anybody else. If I'm gonna be a great
- 18:45husband, my wife's gonna know that every Friday
- 18:48for three hours, we're gonna have a date uninterrupted
- 18:51that she has me with my undivided attention.
- 18:53And every night, every night after our meal,
- 18:55it might be 10 minutes, it might be 30 minutes,
- 18:57but we're gonna talk and connect from the heart.
- 19:00I went through and I put my kids' names in my
- 19:03schedule on the same calendar. And to be, then
- 19:05I said, we're going to eat together and I'm going
- 19:07to meet with my kids individually. And then there's
- 19:09two or three guys that I really liked. I said,
- 19:11I want to be a great friend and I want to work
- 19:14out and I love being with you guys and I need
- 19:15to process some stuff with you that I don't need
- 19:18to talk about with my wife. And I built that
- 19:20in my schedule. And then I changed my calendar.
- 19:23I said, you know what? There's two or three things
- 19:25as the senior pastor that only I can do. And
- 19:27all of Wednesday was gonna be sermon preparation.
- 19:30And I was gonna have my deadline. And I mean,
- 19:32it was so hard. And it was three steps forward
- 19:34and two steps backwards. But I was more concerned
- 19:37about my to -be list than my to -do list. Be
- 19:42diligent. Work hard. Don't take shortcuts. Because
- 19:47see, here's what happens. I can't tell you that
- 19:50everything overnight at all got way better. It's
- 19:53a lot like this exercise right here. You know,
- 19:56when you go, everyone likes to pump a lot of
- 19:58iron, you know, right? You know, you do the curls
- 20:00and you know, hey, you know, get the, well, I'm
- 20:02not gonna do that because it'd be embarrassing,
- 20:03but you get the big guns or get the big pecs,
- 20:06right? But how many people go, hey, how's those
- 20:09back muscles coming? Man, she's got an awesome
- 20:12back. He's got a great back. Have you ever heard
- 20:15that? See, this is diligence. These are the kind
- 20:18of exercises, personally, I hate. Right? You
- 20:22do these, and it's like, come on. I mean, no
- 20:24one sees these things. Of course, these are the
- 20:27balancing muscles to these. And then you can't
- 20:31just do one side. You've got to do both sides.
- 20:33And what happens is, for those who do the actual
- 20:36kind of personal training, what they tell us
- 20:39is that every muscle you have to work the other
- 20:40side. And as people get older, have you noticed
- 20:43how many people, when they get older, they walk
- 20:45like this? Because they don't have these strong
- 20:47muscles. Diligence. You go into training. You
- 20:55get diligent about I'm going to make my marriage
- 20:57a priority. I'm going to make my personal time
- 21:00with God a priority. But it's not about the activity.
- 21:03It's who do you want to become. You are currently
- 21:09becoming someone. And who are you becoming? You're
- 21:15becoming. Where your time and energy and focus,
- 21:18you are in training right now. You just don't
- 21:20know what it is. But you may be training to become
- 21:23a workaholic. You may be in training for your
- 21:25marriage to drift. You may be in training for
- 21:27your kids to be disengaged 20 years from now.
- 21:29See, the problem is, is I can do this three times
- 21:32a week and you can't even hardly even see the
- 21:34back muscles. You don't see the results. Most
- 21:37of everything I said about the to be, I saw no
- 21:40difference for a year or two or three or five.
- 21:43But here's what I'll tell you. I can remember
- 21:4510 years into my marriage thinking, wow, instead
- 21:48of being in marriage counseling, I didn't believe
- 21:50it's good. I remember 20 years into my relationship
- 21:53with my kids and thinking, boy, I said no to
- 21:56this and no to that, and it was a hassle, but
- 21:58we ate together. I tucked them in, and now I've
- 22:02got grown kids by the grace of God and their
- 22:04individual choices. who love God and you have
- 22:07a relationship. There's no guarantees, but there
- 22:10is a guarantee if you aren't diligent. See, sowing
- 22:13and reaping, right? We all believe that. You
- 22:17always reap what you sow, but here's the catch.
- 22:19You never reap in the same season. You never
- 22:23reap in the same season that you sow. So let
- 22:26me encourage you. Be diligent. Go into training.
- 22:28Station number four is be positive. Don't wound
- 22:31with your words. Don't wound with your words.
- 22:35Be positive. Let no unwholesome word proceed
- 22:39from your mouth, but only such a word as is good
- 22:42for evocation according to the need of the moment.
- 22:45Notice the purpose clause. So that it will give
- 22:48grace to those who hear. Do not grieve the Holy
- 22:52Spirit of God by whom you were sealed for the
- 22:55day of redemption. Here we have the training
- 22:58objective is positive speech. Positive speech.
- 23:04The training command, say only that which helps.
- 23:09Stop saying unwholesome words. The word here
- 23:12has the idea of rotten, putrid, corrupt. It's
- 23:17like milk that is spoiled or fruit that's gone
- 23:19bad or meat that has been corrupted. Don't let
- 23:24anything come out of your mouth that's corrupt
- 23:26or putrid. Instead, say words that build up,
- 23:30that help, that edify, that encourage. And the
- 23:33idea of this phrase is that encourage specifically
- 23:36at specific times according to the needs as you're
- 23:39engaging with people. The training action is
- 23:43put off negative speech. Renew, recognize the
- 23:47power and the consequences of your speech. So
- 23:51first we're gonna put off negative speech. And
- 23:54some of you who may be thinking, you know, I'm
- 23:55glad this one doesn't apply much to me. Well,
- 23:58I listed in my notes about 12 or 13 little negative
- 24:02speeches that at some point in my life I've either
- 24:04heard or practiced, unfortunately. And I'll share
- 24:07those in just a minute. But I want you to get,
- 24:10we're gonna put off negative speech and then
- 24:13we're gonna start thinking. Instead of not thinking
- 24:16much about my words, I'm gonna renew my mind
- 24:18and I'm gonna realize the power and the consequences
- 24:22of what comes out of my mouth. And then what
- 24:25I'm gonna put on is I'm gonna put on positive,
- 24:29encouraging, Here's some examples of negative
- 24:33speech. Sarcasm, put downs, innuendos, general
- 24:37negativity, outbursts of anger, criticism, labeling,
- 24:41abusive speech, cussing, swearing, taking the
- 24:44Lord's name in vain, slander, gossip, coarse
- 24:48jokes. Should I go on? Now, here's the deal.
- 24:53You need to understand the power in your words.
- 24:57Proverbs 18, 21. Very powerful. Tells us there's
- 25:03life and death in the power of our words. And
- 25:09those who love it will eat its fruit. I mean,
- 25:12if I could pass a microphone around and some
- 25:15of you could tell me a moment with one of your
- 25:17parents or with a teacher or with a coach who
- 25:20said something to you and it brought death to
- 25:23you. You're a loser. I wish we never had you.
- 25:27You'll never amount to anything. Get out! out
- 25:30of this house. You're too short. You're too fat.
- 25:33You'll never make it. I don't love you. Remember?
- 25:38Remember that? Words are not, you know, that
- 25:41sticks and stones will break my bones, but words
- 25:43will never hurt me. Liar, liar, liar, pants on
- 25:46fire. You can absorb a lot more sticks and stones
- 25:48than you can ever. The power, there's life and
- 25:51death in the power of words. What comes out of
- 25:54your mouth brings life to the people around you
- 25:57or kills them. We could get another microphone
- 26:01and we could talk about the teacher or the coach
- 26:03or the friend or the person who said, no, you
- 26:08ought to go out for the team. I think you'd be
- 26:09good. You know, it's amazing how you think. Have
- 26:12you ever thought of being an engineer? Oh, no,
- 26:14no, you should apply to a college. You can make
- 26:16it. And now you got your PhD. Or you know something?
- 26:21You pick up those songs pretty quickly. Why don't
- 26:23you try playing this instrument? You're great
- 26:26with people. Have you ever thought about being
- 26:28a counselor? Hey, we need you. Come on. And you
- 26:31know what? Someone believed in you before you
- 26:33believed in yourself and they gave you words
- 26:35of life and words of hope. Be positive. Don't
- 26:41wound with your words. Why? Because there's power.
- 26:44The second reason, there's consequences. Very
- 26:48interesting. I don't know if you've ever done
- 26:50this, but now and then I've memorized a verse
- 26:52that I wish I hadn't. Only because it's like,
- 26:56oh my lands, I have to live with this. Luke 6
- 26:59.45 is a very interesting passage where Jesus
- 27:02says that our words are like a spiritual MRI
- 27:06and they will tell you what's really going on
- 27:10in your heart. A good man, according to Jesus,
- 27:14brings good things out of the good stored up
- 27:16in his heart. And an evil man brings out evil
- 27:19things of the evil stored up in his heart. For
- 27:22the mouth speaks by that which fills the heart.
- 27:27See, the reason you need to be so careful and
- 27:29actually monitor your words and listen to your
- 27:31words is because a lot of us say things to people.
- 27:35We're critical of someone. We put put downs here,
- 27:38innuendo here, a little joke here, a little sexual
- 27:41connotation here. And we think, ah, what are
- 27:44words? And then we say something in an argument
- 27:47and then we say, oh, I was only kidding or I
- 27:49didn't really mean it. No, no, no, no, you don't
- 27:51get it. What you really mean is what comes out
- 27:54of your mouth. In fact, a lot of the, oh, I'm
- 27:57only kidding, I'm only joking, that's just because
- 27:59you don't have the courage to say it directly
- 28:01and kindly and lovingly. What you really mean
- 28:04is exactly what came out of your mouth. Outbursts
- 28:07of anger tell you about hatred in your heart.
- 28:09Put downs and insecurities come out of your mouth
- 28:11because you put someone down because this is
- 28:14what's going on inside. See, our words. You have
- 28:19to go into training. James said that if you can
- 28:22ever control your tongue, it's like putting the
- 28:24bit in a horse or like the rudder on a ship.
- 28:27You can control your whole life. We'll talk about
- 28:31some very practical ways in just a minute, but
- 28:33I just want you to get, go into training to be
- 28:37positive. Go into training where you think about
- 28:40what comes out of my mouth. And if you... want
- 28:43to grow spiritually and understand. So what's
- 28:46God doing in me? Listen to your words. Listen
- 28:49to your tone of voice. Is there an angry heart?
- 28:53Is there a critical heart? Is there a wounded
- 28:55heart? Is there a perverted heart? Is there a
- 28:57corrupt heart? Because it'll tell you. And if
- 29:01that isn't enough, this is the one that, maybe
- 29:04another passage that, I don't know what I was
- 29:06doing. I had this season where I was memorizing
- 29:08one of these verses. I guess I really needed
- 29:09them. And these are what I call Jesus verses.
- 29:15These are ones like, Lord, I had no idea that
- 29:19my mouth was so critical to every single relationship.
- 29:23Matthew chapter 12, verses 36 and 37, Jesus says,
- 29:27but I tell you that every careless word that
- 29:29people speak, they shall render account for it
- 29:31in the day of judgment. For by your words, you'll
- 29:33be justified and by your words, you'll be condemned.
- 29:38Every careless word, every little comment, every
- 29:42little gossip, every little slander, every little
- 29:44conversation, driving out of the parking lot
- 29:46talking about someone, everything when you get
- 29:48off the phone and you put it down and you talk
- 29:50about someone that you would never say if they
- 29:52were here in those presence. And Jesus says that
- 29:55every careless word that you speak or I speak,
- 29:58I will give an account and you will give an account
- 30:01at the day of judgment. Can you grasp? Can you
- 30:06fathom the impact that would have on your heart,
- 30:10your relationships with God if you went into
- 30:13training? Because really, your words are a reflection
- 30:16of your heart. See, this training station, I
- 30:19think, is a lot like our cardio. You know, cardio
- 30:21is something that, you know, I've met guys at
- 30:25that big gym I told you about, and I've seen
- 30:29guys that, I mean, they are just massive. Now,
- 30:32they don't do any cardio. And I have a sneaking
- 30:34suspicion by how big and how fast they got that
- 30:37they were taking a little something there, you
- 30:40know, injecting a little something. And I've
- 30:43seen guys that look like they are the most unbelievable
- 30:46bodybuilders in the world and they go up three
- 30:48flights of steps and they can't catch their breath.
- 30:51You can see their skeletal muscles are strong,
- 30:54but their heart is weak because there's no cardio.
- 30:58When you go into training for your speech, you
- 31:00know what you're doing? You're building probably,
- 31:03The most important muscle in your body. The most
- 31:07important muscle in your body is your heart.
- 31:10And there's few things that you can go into training
- 31:12for that will let you know how your heart is
- 31:16doing. Like saying to yourself, you know, Lord,
- 31:19I'm gonna use my speech as a mirror. In fact,
- 31:23your word is a mirror to me and I'm gonna use
- 31:26my speech as a mirror so that rather than just
- 31:29some sort of external nice morality, Christian,
- 31:33I wanna be someone who's pure in heart. Because
- 31:36according to Jesus, the pure in heart see God
- 31:39and experience God. And I'm gonna go into training
- 31:43to be positive. I'm gonna be positive in my words
- 31:46in my home and with my roommate and with my friends.
- 31:50I'm gonna be positive when people are around.
- 31:52I'm gonna be positive for my tone of voice. Now,
- 31:54when you go into training on this one, it will
- 31:56be very painful at first because most of us don't
- 31:59think much about our words. Well, how do you
- 32:02do that? Let me give you a little training apparatus.
- 32:06Practice silence and solitude. Under silence,
- 32:10would you just jot the verse Proverbs 10, 19.
- 32:14It says, when there are many words, transgression
- 32:16is unavoidable. This is a funny application.
- 32:21Talk less. Now for some of you, that's not a
- 32:26problem. For others, I won't mention any names.
- 32:30It's a big problem. Especially if you're a verbal
- 32:33processor. Sometimes you think out loud, and
- 32:36as my wife lovingly says to me, Chip, it's okay
- 32:39if you think out loud, but could you do it with
- 32:40your tongue not moving? Because sometimes as
- 32:44you're processing out loud, it's very unhelpful
- 32:47for other people. Sometimes in a meeting, what
- 32:49would happen is you would actually look smarter
- 32:51and more, I mean, profound if you just didn't
- 32:54say as much. In fact, you might even try, if
- 32:57you have a problem with speaking and you want
- 32:59to get control, you might do the five or 10 second
- 33:02rule. Something comes to your mind, one 1 ,000,
- 33:05two 1 ,000, three 1 ,000, four 1 ,000, five 1
- 33:08,000 before you speak. For some of us, you need
- 33:10to go to 10. But silence. The second is solitude.
- 33:17And what I mean by solitude is I don't have a
- 33:18picture of you. Although it probably wouldn't
- 33:21hurt most of us to get two or three days away
- 33:23in some retreat center and not speak to anyone
- 33:25for two or three days. Many of us, that would
- 33:28maybe be too much too soon. We'd probably go
- 33:29insane. White jacket, you know. But I will tell
- 33:34you what. If you would say, God, I'm going to
- 33:37spend solitude with you a half hour or 45 minutes
- 33:40or an hour every day. And since this is the mirror
- 33:43of your word and it is truth. What I'm gonna
- 33:46do, God, is I want you to know that I want my
- 33:48heart to be pure and I will deceive myself and
- 33:51so I'm gonna systematically read through your
- 33:54word and there's lots of good programs and you
- 33:56read and then you close your Bible and you say,
- 33:58Lord, would you help me respond? What do you
- 33:59wanna say to me? And then you sit quietly and
- 34:02for some of you, just sit quietly. You don't
- 34:04need to do this. For some of us that are very,
- 34:06very verbal, then I get out my journal, I begin
- 34:09to write. Lord, would you speak to me? Would
- 34:11you bring to my mind anybody or anything in the
- 34:14last day or so where things have come out of
- 34:16my mouth and sit quietly and I will tell you,
- 34:19if you struggle with like God never answers my
- 34:21prayers, you're gonna get some answers, prayers
- 34:22in a hurry. He'll bring vivid pictures to your
- 34:25mind of what you said or how you said it. And
- 34:29this will be difficult at first, but you'll start
- 34:31experiencing God. When you go into training on
- 34:35your speech and you begin to open his word, you'll
- 34:38start to experience God because he longs for
- 34:41your words to give life. He longs for you to
- 34:44be a conduit of life and hope and building up
- 34:46and education in your home and at work and in
- 34:49your family and your neighborhood. But most of
- 34:52us don't think much about what we say. So let
- 34:55me encourage you. Go into training. Be positive.
- 35:01Don't wound with your words. Station number five.
- 35:06We go into training to be forgiving. Be forgiving.
- 35:13Be the first to say, I'm sorry. Verse 31, he
- 35:19says, let all bitterness and wrath and anger
- 35:21and clamor and slander be put away from you along
- 35:24with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted,
- 35:29forgiving each other. Well, how? just as God
- 35:32and Christ also has forgiven you. Would you put
- 35:35a line under those key words, bitterness, wrath,
- 35:38anger, clamor, slander, and then skip down to
- 35:41all malice. Then put a circle around kind, circle
- 35:46around tenderhearted, circle around forgiving.
- 35:50In fact, grammatically, what he's gonna say is
- 35:52stop being bitter, and grammatically, it's show
- 35:55yourself or demonstrate yourself to be a kind,
- 35:58tenderhearted, compassionate, forgiving person.
- 36:02The training command is to be kind. Training
- 36:05objective is relational harmony. I mean, that's
- 36:08really what he's talking about is great relationships.
- 36:10The training command is to be kind, tenderhearted,
- 36:14and forgiving. The negative is stop hateful attitudes
- 36:18and behaviors. Start showing and demonstrating
- 36:23loving attitudes and behaviors. And so the training
- 36:28actions are to put off hate. Put off hate. I
- 36:34did a little word study on each of these. And
- 36:35since we tend to use words loosely, let me just
- 36:39go through and tell you what bitterness and anger.
- 36:42And I mean, he's very particular about these.
- 36:45Bitterness is the longstanding resentment that
- 36:47we have. It's a spirit inside of us that refuses
- 36:50to be reconciled with someone. Now, by the way,
- 36:52you do understand that this is a command. In
- 36:56light of someone's hurt you, betrayed you, abused
- 36:59you, wounded you, gossiped about you, slandered
- 37:02you, did you in, right? You're hurt. I mean,
- 37:05that's why you get bitter and that's why you
- 37:07get angry, right? It's nursing anger to keep
- 37:11it warm and brooding over insults and injuries.
- 37:15You have anger fantasies about these people.
- 37:19Wrath here is an outbreak of passion. It's a
- 37:22picture of, you know, like a piece of newspaper
- 37:24that you light. This is rage. These are those
- 37:29outbursts that people have. The clamor or anger
- 37:33here is that habitual righteous anger, but the
- 37:38sun goes down on it. And so although it's righteous
- 37:42and it's just and you're angry pretty soon, everything
- 37:45in you is critical about everything and everyone
- 37:47because it doesn't measure up. The clamor is
- 37:50loud talking, brawling, shouting. This is that,
- 37:54you know, screaming at one another, shouting
- 37:56at one another, injurious names, calling people
- 37:58names. It's the kind of stuff that some of you
- 38:02remember was a part of your first marriage. And
- 38:05then even in counseling, you said, oh, well,
- 38:07we'll bring it back and I'm sorry and I didn't
- 38:09mean it. But see, words have the power of life
- 38:11and death. People blew up and scars were there.
- 38:18Slander, we get our word blasphemy from. It's
- 38:20evil speaking. It's trying to injure someone
- 38:23with your speech and making up untrue statements
- 38:25or shading them or spinning them in a way that
- 38:28when other people hear it, it puts another person
- 38:30in a bad light. And then finally, malice just
- 38:33has the idea of flowing from a heart that desires
- 38:35for the other person to pay. It's just this sort
- 38:39of joy in the demise of another person. And what
- 38:44he says is, You are not a spiritual green caterpillar
- 38:51anymore. You have come to know the living Savior.
- 38:55You've been in the cocoon of the supernatural
- 38:57community of God's church. And put it off. That
- 39:01behavior is off limits for the children of God.
- 39:03And you are now a supernatural, by his grace,
- 39:06butterfly. And he's going to say, I want you
- 39:08to put on kindness. It means sweetness, gentleness.
- 39:13has the idea of generosity. It has the focus
- 39:17of thinking of others. It's an outward focus.
- 39:19Then he says, put on kindness and tenderheartedness,
- 39:22or literally the word is compassion. It's an
- 39:24interesting word used of Jesus, splotna. In the
- 39:27ancient world, they didn't use the heart of the
- 39:29center of affections. It was the liver and the
- 39:31bowels. They thought the deepest thinking came
- 39:34from here. And so that's this word for this.
- 39:37And it's the idea, it's more than empathy. This
- 39:40is someone even who has hurt you, but you think
- 39:43about where is it they came from? And there's
- 39:46something where you see the hurt and the damage.
- 39:50And every time this word comes up with Jesus,
- 39:52he sees a great multitude. And he sees they're
- 39:56like downcast sheep. And if you know anything
- 39:58about a downcast sheep is once they roll over
- 40:01too far on their own, they cannot roll back without
- 40:03help. They will die. And he says that's how he
- 40:06saw people and their dysfunction and their sin
- 40:08and their hurt and their patterns. And he had
- 40:11compassion on them. Compassion always leads to
- 40:15action to help. And so he says put away those
- 40:19things but instead be tender hearted. Not hard
- 40:24hearted. Not harsh. Compassionate. And then forgiving
- 40:27it literally means to put it away. To release
- 40:30it. Just the way God took your sin and my sin
- 40:34and he put it away and he placed it on Christ
- 40:37so that when Jesus was hanging on the cross,
- 40:40your sin and my sin and the sins of the whole
- 40:43world were placed on him and the just wrath of
- 40:45God for your sin and mine was placed on him and
- 40:48he paid for it and so he atoned or his blood
- 40:50covered our sin and whosoever would believe and
- 40:54turn in faith and receive that gift, your sins
- 41:00go to his account and his righteousness comes
- 41:03to your account. because he's merciful to you.
- 41:07And that's what he's saying. But your thinking
- 41:09has to change. My thinking has to change. We
- 41:13put off hate. The renewing of our mind is we
- 41:16remember that right relationships take precedent
- 41:18over my rights. See, when I'm hurt, when you're
- 41:22hurt, you know, you're thinking, don't be bitter.
- 41:26I mean, be kind. don't blow up, be tenderhearted.
- 41:30I mean, after what she did, after what he did,
- 41:33I mean, he said he was a Christian, he's my business
- 41:35partner, he ripped me off. After she talked behind
- 41:38my back, are you kidding me? I will never, you
- 41:40know what? Thanksgiving, until hell freezes over,
- 41:43I'll never be in the same room with that group
- 41:44of people. Anybody had any of those? Paying people
- 41:49back. He said, that's not how spiritual butterflies
- 41:52live. When you give other people what they don't
- 41:56deserve, Granted, there may be situations where
- 41:59you have to set boundaries, but this starts in
- 42:02a real attitude of the heart. You will never
- 42:04be more like Jesus. You've heard it said, love
- 42:08your friends and hate your enemies, but I say
- 42:10to you, love your enemies and pray for those
- 42:13who persecute you. For what value is it if you
- 42:16do good to them who can do good back to you?
- 42:19Be merciful like your heavenly father is merciful
- 42:22who causes it to rain on the just and on the
- 42:25unjust. And so the training command here is what
- 42:28I call the Matthew 524 principle. The Matthew
- 42:32524 principle. This is the one that reminds me
- 42:37that my rights, this isn't fair, is not as important
- 42:41as right relationships. Matthew 524, it's this
- 42:45picture of an Old Testament saint in the time
- 42:48of Jesus coming to the altar and he's gonna present
- 42:51his offering. He may have a pigeon or... He may
- 42:53have a calf or a goat and he's making an offering.
- 42:56And it says, if you come there before God with
- 42:58your offering and there remember your brother
- 43:01has something against you. Now notice, it's not
- 43:03you have something against him. Now that I could
- 43:06buy, right? I got this against him. I got a bad
- 43:10attitude. I ripped him off. I'm really mad. I'm
- 43:12really angry. Okay, Lord, I get it. I'll go apologize.
- 43:15That's not what it says. It says, if when you're
- 43:18bringing your offering and you know they have
- 43:20something against you, And in your mind going,
- 43:23something against me. Are you kidding me? It
- 43:26was 92 % their fault. When they come and apologize,
- 43:30we'll get this right. What's it say? When you
- 43:34know they have something against you, leave your
- 43:36offering at the altar. Go and be reconciled with
- 43:40your brother. Go own the 8%. Make every effort
- 43:46as far as it depends on you to be at peace with
- 43:49all men. Do whatever it takes because the relationship
- 43:53to God is more important than who is right. The
- 44:00relationship in your family, and some of you
- 44:03have been there. You're estranged from family
- 44:05members. There's been these breakdowns and pains
- 44:08and hurts and struggles, and they're real. And
- 44:12it takes someone with maturity who says being
- 44:15fair is not the issue. And just because you do
- 44:19this doesn't mean there's reconciliation. It
- 44:21doesn't mean people hug. It doesn't mean Thanksgiving
- 44:23is wonderful. But what it means is you have been
- 44:26a child of God. You're walking in a manner worthy.
- 44:29You're living the way Jesus is his life through
- 44:31you. And so you go to them and you make every
- 44:35effort and you'd be surprised what God will do.
- 44:40You'd be surprised how healing can occur. There's
- 44:43been so many relationships among Christians.
- 44:45This happens, there's a divide, and they're over
- 44:47here, you're over here. When their name comes
- 44:49up, your stomach, right, you know, kind of gets
- 44:52a little like this. When you see them in a grocery
- 44:54store or someplace, or heaven forbid, like at
- 44:56the airport when you're traveling, and you just
- 44:58realize, oh, my lands. Then you try and act like
- 45:01you don't see them, then it's too late, and then
- 45:03it's like a scab. You know why? Because it's
- 45:05not dealt with. You go into training, and you
- 45:10go into training, to make the relationships what
- 45:13God wants them to be. Because when I sin and
- 45:17blow it, like I do and you do, I come to God
- 45:21and I say, oh Lord, I can't believe I said that.
- 45:23I can't believe I did that. I know I should have
- 45:25done this, but I did that. And boy, the potential
- 45:27consequences are this and this and this and this.
- 45:29Oh Jesus, will you please forgive me? Would you
- 45:32please forgive me? Please be merciful. Please
- 45:34don't hold me accountable to this. Would you
- 45:36please forgive me? What do I want? Mercy. And
- 45:42yet, someone violates me and what do I want?
- 45:45Justice. And what Jesus says is, I gave you mercy.
- 45:55Now, you need to extend it. See, this is like
- 46:00this training station and it's the one that many
- 46:03of us don't appreciate at all. The abs. The abs
- 46:08hold everything together. But if there's bitterness
- 46:11in your heart, for relationships out of sync.
- 46:14You know, the principle of the entire book of
- 46:161 John is if your relationship with God vertically
- 46:19is right, then your relationships with people
- 46:22horizontally have to be right. So, you know,
- 46:24you do the ab work, you know, and you do all
- 46:26this kind of stuff, and you ride the bicycle,
- 46:27and for some of us, you remember junior high
- 46:29sports, and you put your feet up like this, and
- 46:32the coach would say, okay, keep them up, keep
- 46:34them up, keep them up. And you go, no, get them
- 46:38up, get them up, get them up, get them up, get
- 46:39them up. Come on, come on, come on, come on,
- 46:40come on, come on, right? It's really hard. But
- 46:45the core connects everything else. What relationship
- 46:51do you realize you need to forgive someone? I
- 46:56mean, it's hard to have integrity when, you know,
- 46:59there's this thing out there, need to be cleansed
- 47:02of. Who? It's coming to your mind right now that
- 47:05you realize, I need to make a phone call or have
- 47:08a breakfast or grab a cup of coffee or at least
- 47:10write a letter. And as far as it depends on me,
- 47:13leave my offering at the altar. I remember about
- 47:19five years ago, I tore a disc in my back, L4,
- 47:23L5. And I mean, I couldn't sit down. I couldn't.
- 47:27When I rode on planes, it was just, I mean, excruciating.
- 47:30I had to take three Advil and a pain pill. And
- 47:32I did injections. I did everything. Nothing worked.
- 47:35And a guy said, well, I can fuse your back, but
- 47:38then you can't do anything. He said, if you can
- 47:40endure the pain in a couple years, the body's
- 47:43going to start healing. But you got to endure
- 47:46it. I tried everything. And then this doctor,
- 47:49who was a back doctor, had my same problem. He
- 47:51gave me the card of his personal trainer. He
- 47:53said, what I did is I went nuts. And he said,
- 47:56I got my core so strong that it began to take
- 47:58all the pressure off my back. And I didn't go
- 48:01to his trainer, but I tried everything. And so,
- 48:03ladies, please don't laugh. I learned that Pilates
- 48:09really builds your core. And I found myself in
- 48:12a room with all women. And my wife was gracious
- 48:17to go with me. And all of a sudden, okay, the
- 48:20plank, you know, diligent, you know. And here's
- 48:22all these ladies smiling. I'm going, you know,
- 48:25I haven't done anything in two years. And what
- 48:28I had to learn was to be diligent. And I did
- 48:31Pilates and a Pilates fusion type deal. And after
- 48:35three, four, five months, my back pain was gone.
- 48:39Because what happened here and what happened
- 48:42here put the rest of it together. And for some
- 48:46of you, you need to go into training. Some with
- 48:50your heart being positive with your words. Some,
- 48:53right, those back exercises. For others, it's
- 48:58kind of the cardio work. I want to wrap up our
- 49:03time and wrap up our series by really asking
- 49:05you to do a little thinking and work. God is
- 49:11a provider. Transformation is always by grace.
- 49:15Your number one cheerleader is living inside
- 49:17you. It's the Holy Spirit. What we've learned
- 49:20is that you grieve him and I grieve him when
- 49:22words come out of our mouth, when we hurt other
- 49:24people. This isn't a formula. These aren't principles.
- 49:27These are not self -help. This isn't going to
- 49:29training and do all these things. You'll be a
- 49:31better person, be more successful. All those
- 49:33things may happen, but it's completely not the
- 49:35point. This is a relationship. This is about
- 49:38the living God living inside of you, and there's
- 49:41a part of the transformation that no one's going
- 49:43to do for you. You've got everything you need,
- 49:46his spirit, his word, his people. And there's
- 49:48part of it that's hard to be honest and be angry
- 49:51and be diligent and be positive and be forgiving.
- 49:55That's your part. You can't do it, but he's working
- 49:59and he's creating some of you right now. He's
- 50:01creating the will and the desire to do some things
- 50:03that you don't want to do. And so here's the
- 50:07application. Number one, I want you, look at
- 50:10your notes. Underneath there, where are you doing
- 50:13well? I mean, some of your personalities, oh,
- 50:16I'm doing terrible. I'm terrible on the bike.
- 50:17I'm terrible on the back. I don't do, I need
- 50:19spiritual abs. I need, I'm a terrible person.
- 50:21That is not God's, that's not his word to you.
- 50:25You need to rejoice and say, you know something,
- 50:27where was I a year ago or three years ago? I've
- 50:29made progress. Jot it down. I'm a lot better
- 50:32with my words. I used to have an anger problem.
- 50:35Wow, I remember I forgave so -and -so a couple
- 50:37years ago after what cheer he did. Write that
- 50:40down. Be encouraged. Then second, what one area
- 50:45do you need to address? Don't look at all five
- 50:47of those and go, oh, yes, yes. No, no, no, no.
- 50:50Don't try to do all five. What's the critical
- 50:53one? What's the keystone habit spiritually that
- 50:56when you make progress on this, the others will
- 50:58fall into place? And then finally, you can't
- 51:02do this by yourself. None of us can do this.
- 51:07And so the last question is who? Who's gonna
- 51:10help you? I just had another injury and I went
- 51:13to a physical therapist on Friday. And I had
- 51:18been doing exercises by myself. And I felt very
- 51:22proud of myself. And then I went to this physical
- 51:25therapist and he had me do exercises. I mean,
- 51:29tears. Put this ball between your knees. Do this
- 51:32on the back. How you doing? Give me 10 more.
- 51:36Okay, here's this machine. Three sets. He took
- 51:39me through something. It was amazing, the difference.
- 51:43You need someone in your life to help you push
- 51:47to the levels by the grace of God to become the
- 51:51person God died for. for you to become so that
- 51:55you could demonstrate his love and his light
- 51:58and his holiness as a natural response to the
- 52:02life that comes at you. He's done his part. Now
- 52:06work out your salvation with fear and trembling.

- 52:44looks like and actually extending it are two
- 52:47different battles. Chip's book, Yes, You Really
- 52:50Can Change, was written for the second battle,

- 52:57God has called you to live. And right now, we're

- 53:46Georgia 30024. Well, now here's Chip with some
- 53:50final thoughts for today. Going into training
- 53:53is the key to lasting change. The Apostle Paul,
- 53:56after teaching us who we are in Christ, how to
- 53:59renew our mind, he says that personal integrity,
- 54:02emotional control, financial stewardship, positive
- 54:05speech and private attitudes are the key to change
- 54:09from the inside out. Now, here's the deal. You
- 54:12could just feel absolutely overwhelmed like most
- 54:15of us do when you look at that list. God never
- 54:17dumps the truck. When you feel condemned, that's
- 54:21the enemy. The Spirit of God convicts. That means
- 54:24He'll be very specific and He'll say, you know
- 54:26something, for you. I want you to talk about
- 54:29going into training on integrity. You tell white
- 54:32lies. For others, integrity may be an issue,
- 54:36but you blow up with your anger or your passive
- 54:39aggressive. Or for some, I went into training
- 54:42on not being sarcastic. Out of your mouth, those
- 54:45little quips. So don't feel like you need to
- 54:48do everything. Stop right now and say, Lord,
- 54:51you live within me by your Holy Spirit. What's
- 54:54the first step you want me to take in terms of?
- 54:57transformation and he'll show you sit quietly
- 55:00and don't try and get it all done, but go into
- 55:03training. I mean, when I taught this, I literally
- 55:06set up a gym in our worship center and I went
- 55:08from the, you know, the bench press to the curls.
- 55:10And if you've ever worked out, I mean, if you
- 55:13go and try and do everything, all you do is get
- 55:15sore and you quit. You need to go into training
- 55:18on one thing. And here's what it requires. Truth
- 55:22in your mind, trust in your heart, teammates
- 55:25in your life. Somehow get the truth in your mind.
- 55:29Whatever you do, whether you listen, read, memorize,
- 55:32and then trust in your heart. You've got to verbalize
- 55:35and talk with people and someone to hold you
- 55:37accountable. And then you need a team of people
- 55:39like we all do to go into training. God wants
- 55:43and will change your life. Next time, the training
- 55:46continues as we learn to understand the power
- 55:49of focus. Be sure to listen next time to Living
- 55:52on the Edge with Chip Ingram. Today's program
- 55:58is produced and sponsored by Living on the Edge.
