- 0:00Are you trying to find favor with God by what you do or don't
- 0:05do on certain days or months or seasons or years?
- 0:09Are you a child of the slave woman Hagar,
- 0:13obligated to the law, or are you a child of the
- 0:17free woman Sarah, acceptable to God
- 0:21because of your faith? Are you standing at Mount
- 0:25Sinai with Moses as your head and
- 0:29your leader that you follow in trying to obey the Law?
- 0:33Or are you standing at Mount Zion with Jesus as
- 0:37your head and your leader, walking in faith in
- 0:41the power of the Holy Spirit? These are the questions we're going to look
- 0:45at today from our reading of Galatians 3 and 4. Listen in.
- 0:50Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is September 18th.
- 0:55Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire Bible in
- 0:591 year. This week we are reading from the New Living Translation
- 1:02for the Old Testament and for the New Testament.
- 1:08Deuteronomy 28:42-68.
- 1:16Swarms of insects will destroy your trees and crops. The foreigners
- 1:20living among you will become stronger and stronger while you become weaker
- 1:24and weaker. They will lend money to you, but you will
- 1:28not lend to them. They will be the head, and you will
- 1:31be the tail. If you refuse to listen to
- 1:35the Lord your God and to obey the commands and decrees he has given you,
- 1:39all these curses will pursue and overtake you until you
- 1:43are destroyed. These horrors will serve
- 1:47as a sign and warning among you and your descendants forever.
- 1:51If you do not serve the Lord your God with joy and
- 1:55enthusiasm for the abundant benefits you have received, you will serve
- 2:00your enemies whom the Lord will send against you. You will
- 2:04be left hungry, thirsty, naked, and lacking in everything.
- 2:10The Lord will put an iron yoke on your neck,
- 2:13oppressing you harshly until he has destroyed you.
- 2:18The Lord will bring a distant nation against you from the end of the
- 2:22earth, and it will swoop down on you like a vulture.
- 2:26It is a nation whose language you do not understand,
- 2:31a fierce and heartless nation that shows no respect for
- 2:34the old and no pity for the young.
- 2:38Its armies will devour your livestock and crops, and you
- 2:42will be destroyed. They will leave you no grain,
- 2:46new wine, olive oil, calves, or lambs, and you will starve to
- 2:51death. They will attack your cities until all the
- 2:55fortified walls in your land, the walls you trusted to protect you,
- 2:59are knocked down. They will attack all the
- 3:03towns in the land the Lord your God has given you. The siege
- 3:08and terrible distress of the enemy's attack will be so severe
- 3:12that you will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters whom
- 3:16the Lord your God has given you.
- 3:20The most tenderhearted man among you will have no compassion for
- 3:25his own brother, his beloved wife, and his surviving children.
- 3:30He will refuse to share with them the flesh he
- 3:34is devouring, the flesh of one of his own children,
- 3:37because he has nothing else to eat during the siege and terrible
- 3:42distress that your enemy will inflict on all your towns.
- 3:46The most tender and delicate woman among you, so delicate she
- 3:50would not so much as touch the ground with her foot,
- 3:54will be selfish toward the husband she loves and toward her own son
- 3:57or daughter.
- 4:02She will hide from them the afterbirth and the new baby
- 4:05she has borne, so that she herself can secretly eat
- 4:09them. She will have nothing else to eat during the siege
- 4:13and terrible distress that your enemy will inflict on
- 4:17all your towns. If you refuse to obey
- 4:21all the words of instruction that are written in this book, and if
- 4:25you do not fear the glorious and awesome name of
- 4:29the Lord your God, Then the Lord will overwhelm you
- 4:33and your children with indescribable plagues.
- 4:37These plagues will be intense and without relief, making you miserable
- 4:41and unbearably sick. He will afflict you with
- 4:45all the diseases of Egypt that you feared so much,
- 4:49and you will have no relief. The Lord will afflict you
- 4:52with every sickness and plague there is, even those not mentioned
- 4:56in this book of instruction until you are destroyed.
- 5:02Though you become as numerous as the stars in the sky, few of
- 5:06you will be left because you would not listen to the Lord your God.
- 5:11Just as the Lord has found great pleasure in causing you to
- 5:14prosper and multiply, the Lord will find pleasure in destroying
- 5:18you. You will be torn from the land you are about to enter and
- 5:22occupy. For the Lord will scatter you among
- 5:27all the nations from one end of the earth to the other.
- 5:30There you will worship foreign gods that neither you
- 5:34nor your ancestors have known, gods made of
- 5:38wood and stone. There among those nations you
- 5:42will find no peace or place to rest,
- 5:46and the Lord will cause your heart to tremble. Your eyesight to
- 5:50fail, and your soul to despair. Your life
- 5:54will constantly hang in the balance. You will live night
- 5:58and day in fear, unsure if you will survive.
- 6:01In the morning you will say, if only it were night!
- 6:05And in the evening you will say, if only it were morning!
- 6:10For you will be terrified by the awful horrors you see
- 6:13around you. Then the Lord will send you back to Egypt in ships,
- 6:18to a destination I promised you would never see again.
- 6:22There you will offer to sell yourselves to your enemies
- 6:25as slaves, but no one will buy you.
- 6:40Isaiah 28:14-30,
- 6:4311. Therefore listen to this message
- 6:47from the Lord, you scoffing rulers in Jerusalem.
- 6:50You boast that you have struck a bargain to avoid death
- 6:54and have made a deal to dodge the grave. You say,
- 6:57the Assyrians can never touch us, for we have built a strong refuge
- 7:01made of lies and deception. Therefore, this is what the
- 7:05Sovereign Lord says: Look, I am placing a foundation stone
- 7:09in Jerusalem. It is firm, a tested
- 7:13and precious cornerstone that is safe to build on.
- 7:16Whoever believes need never run away again.
- 7:20I will take the measuring line of justice and the plumb line
- 7:23of righteousness to check the foundation wall you have built.
- 7:28Your refuge looks strong, but since it is made of lies,
- 7:32a hailstorm will knock it down. Since it is made of deception,
- 7:37the enemy will come like a flood to sweep it away. I will
- 7:41cancel the bargain you have made to avoid death, and I will
- 7:45overturn your deal to dodge the grave. When the terrible enemy
- 7:49floods in, you will be trampled into the ground.
- 7:53Again and again that flood will come, morning after morning,
- 7:57day and night, until you are carried away. This message
- 8:01will bring terror to your people, for you have no place
- 8:05of refuge. The bed you have made is too short to lie on.
- 8:09The blankets are too narrow to cover you. The Lord will come
- 8:12suddenly and in anger, as he did
- 8:17against the Philistines at Mount Perazim and against the Amorites at Gibeon.
- 8:20He will come to do a strange and unusual
- 8:24thing. He will destroy his own people. So scoff no
- 8:29more, or your punishment will be even greater. For the Lord,
- 8:33the Lord Almighty, has plainly told me that he is determined
- 8:37to crush you. Listen to me, listen as I
- 8:41plead. Does a farmer always plow and never sow?
- 8:45Is he forever cultivating the soil and never planting it?
- 8:49Does he not finally plant his seeds for dill,
- 8:52cumin, wheat, barley, and spelt, each in its
- 8:55own section of his land? The farmer knows just
- 8:58what to do, for God has given him understanding. He doesn't
- 9:03thresh all his crops the same way. A heavy sledge is never
- 9:06used on dill; rather, it is beaten with a light stick.
- 9:11A threshing wheel is never rolled on cumin; instead,
- 9:14it is beaten softly with a flail.
- 9:18Red grain is easily crushed, so he doesn't keep on pounding it.
- 9:22He threshes it under the wheels of a cart, but he doesn't pulverize
- 9:26it. The Lord Almighty is a wonderful teacher, and he gives
- 9:30the farmer great wisdom.
- 9:36Destruction is certain for Ariel, the City of David.
- 9:40Year after year you offer your many
- 9:45sacrifices, yet I will bring disaster upon
- 9:48you And there will be weeping and sorrow,
- 9:52for Jerusalem will become as her name Ariel means,
- 9:57an altar covered with blood. I will be your enemy,
- 10:01surrounding Jerusalem and attacking its walls. I will
- 10:05build siege towers around it and will destroy it. Your voice
- 10:10will whisper like a ghost from the earth where you will lie buried,
- 10:14but suddenly Your ruthless enemies will be driven away like
- 10:18chaff before the wind. In an instant,
- 10:22I, the Lord Almighty, will come against them with thunder and earthquake
- 10:26and great noise, with whirlwind and storm and consuming fire.
- 10:31All the nations fighting against Jerusalem will vanish like a
- 10:34dream. Those who are attacking her walls will vanish
- 10:38like a vision in the night. A hungry person dreams
- 10:42of eating but is still hungry. A thirsty person dreams of drinking
- 10:46but is still faint from thirst when morning comes. In the
- 10:49same way, your enemies will dream of a victorious conquest
- 10:53over Jerusalem, but all to no avail.
- 10:58Are you amazed and incredulous? Do you not believe
- 11:01it? Then go ahead and be blind if you must.
- 11:06You are stupid, but not from wine. You stagger,
- 11:10but not from beer, for the Lord has poured out on you a
- 11:14spirit of deep sleep. He has closed the eyes of your
- 11:18prophets and visionaries. All these future events are a sealed
- 11:22book to them. When you give it to those who can read, they will say,
- 11:26we can't read it because it is sealed. When you
- 11:29give it to those who cannot read, they will say, sorry, we don't know how
- 11:33to read. And so the Lord says, these people say
- 11:38they are mine. They honor me with their lips, but their
- 11:42hearts are far away. And their worship
- 11:46of me amounts to nothing more than human laws learned
- 11:51by rote. Because of
- 11:54this, I will do wonders among these hypocrites.
- 12:00I will show that human wisdom is foolish, and even the most
- 12:04brilliant people lack understanding.
- 12:07Destruction is certain for those who try to hide their plans from
- 12:10the Lord, who try to keep him in the dark concerning what they do.
- 12:15The Lord can't see us, you say to yourselves. He doesn't know
- 12:18what is going on. How stupid can you be? He is
- 12:21the potter, and he is certainly greater than you.
- 12:25You are only the jars he makes. Should the thing that was
- 12:28created say to the one who made it, he didn't make us?
- 12:32Does a jar ever say, the potter who made me is stupid?
- 12:36Soon, and it will not be very long, the wilderness
- 12:40of Lebanon will be a fertile field once again,
- 12:43and the fertile fields will become a lush and fertile forest.
- 12:47In that day, deaf people will hear words read from a book,
- 12:51and blind people will see through the gloom and darkness.
- 12:55The humble will be filled with fresh joy from
- 13:00the Lord. Those who are poor will rejoice
- 13:04in the Holy One of Israel. Those who
- 13:08intimidate and harass will be gone, and all those
- 13:11who plot evil will be killed. Those who make the innocent
- 13:16guilty by their false testimony will disappear, and those
- 13:19who use trickery to pervert justice and tell lies to tear
- 13:24down the innocent will be no more. That is why
- 13:27the Lord who redeemed Abraham says to the people of Israel,
- 13:31my people will no longer pale with fear or be ashamed.
- 13:35For when they see their many children and material blessings,
- 13:39they will recognize the holiness of the Holy One of Israel.
- 13:43They will stand in awe of the God of Israel. Those in
- 13:47error will then believe the truth, and those who constantly complain
- 13:52will accept instruction.
- 13:56Destruction is certain for my rebellious children, says the Lord.
- 14:00You make plans that are contrary to my will.
- 14:03You weave a web of plans that are not from my Spirit,
- 14:07thus piling up your sins. For without consulting me,
- 14:11you have gone down to Egypt to find help. You have put your
- 14:15trust in Pharaoh for his protection. But in trusting Pharaoh,
- 14:20you will be humiliated and disgraced. For though his power
- 14:24extends to Zoan and Hanes, it will all turn out to your shame.
- 14:28He will not help you even one little bit.
- 14:34Look at the animals moving slowly across the terrible desert to Egypt—
- 14:38donkeys and camels loaded with treasure to pay for Egypt's aid.
- 14:42On through the wilderness they go, where lions and poisonous snakes live.
- 14:47All this, and Egypt will give you nothing in return.
- 14:52Egypt's promises are worthless. I call her
- 14:56the harmless dragon. Now go and write down
- 14:59these words concerning Egypt. They will then stand
- 15:03until the end of time as a witness to Israel's unbelief.
- 15:07For these people are stubborn rebels who refuse to
- 15:11pay any attention to the Lord's instructions.
- 15:15They tell the prophets, shut up! We don't want any more
- 15:19of your reports. They say, don't tell us the truth.
- 15:22Tell us nice things. Tell us lies. Forget all this gloom.
- 15:27We have heard more than enough about your Holy One of Israel. We are
- 15:31tired of listening to what he has to say.
- 15:38Galatians 3:23-4:31.
- 15:44Until faith in Christ was shown to us as the way of becoming
- 15:49right with God, we were guarded by
- 15:53the Law. We were kept in protective custody, so to speak,
- 15:57until we could put our faith in the coming Savior.
- 16:02Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian
- 16:05and teacher to lead us until Christ
- 16:09came. So now, through faith in Christ,
- 16:12we are made right with God. But now that
- 16:15faith in Christ has come, we no longer need the law as
- 16:19our guardian. So you are all children
- 16:23of God through faith in Christ Jesus, and all who have been
- 16:27united with Christ in baptism have been made like him.
- 16:32There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free,
- 16:36male or female, for you are all Christians.
- 16:40You are one in Christ Jesus. And now that
- 16:44you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham.
- 16:48You are his heirs, and now all the promises
- 16:51God gave to him belong to you.
- 16:55Think of it this way. If a father dies and leaves great wealth
- 16:59for his young children, those children are not much better off than slaves
- 17:04until they grow up, even though they actually own everything their father
- 17:08had. They have to obey their guardians until they reach whatever
- 17:12age their father set. And that's the way it was with
- 17:16us before Christ came. We were slaves to the spiritual
- 17:20powers of this world. But when the right time came,
- 17:24God sent his Son, born of a woman,
- 17:28subject to the law. God sent him to
- 17:31buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law,
- 17:35so that he could adopt us as his very own children.
- 17:41And because you Gentiles have become his children,
- 17:44God has sent the Spirit of his Son into
- 17:47your hearts. And now you can call God your dear Father.
- 17:52Now you are no longer a slave, but God's
- 17:56own child. And since you are his child,
- 17:59everything he has belongs to you. Before you
- 18:03Gentiles knew God, you were slaves to so-called gods
- 18:07that do not even exist. And now that you have found God—
- 18:11or should I say, now that God has found you— Why do
- 18:15you want to go back again and become slaves once more to the weak and
- 18:20useless spiritual powers of this world? You are trying to find
- 18:24favor with God by what you do or don't do on
- 18:28certain days or months or seasons or
- 18:31years. I fear for you.
- 18:35I am afraid that all my hard work for you
- 18:39was worth Nothing.
- 18:42Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to live as I do,
- 18:46in freedom from these things. For I have become
- 18:49like you Gentiles were, free from the Law.
- 18:54You did not mistreat me when I first preached to you.
- 18:58Surely you remember that I was sick when I first
- 19:02brought you the good news of Christ. But even though my sickness
- 19:06was revolting to you, You did not reject me
- 19:09and turn me away. No,
- 19:13you took me in and cared for me as though I were an angel
- 19:17from God or even Christ Jesus himself. Where is that
- 19:20joyful spirit we felt together then? In those days, I know
- 19:24you would gladly have taken out your own eyes and given them to me
- 19:28if it had been possible. Have I now become your enemy because I am
- 19:32telling you the truth? Those false teachers
- 19:36who are so anxious to win your favor are not
- 19:40doing it for your good. They are trying to shut you off from Me
- 19:44so that you will pay more attention to them. Now,
- 19:47it's wonderful if you are eager to do good, and especially
- 19:51when I am not with you. But oh, my dear children,
- 19:55I feel as if I am going through labor pains for you again,
- 19:59and they will continue until Christ is fully developed
- 20:03in your lives. How I wish I were there with you right
- 20:07now so that I could be more gentle with you, but at this
- 20:11distance I frankly don't know what else to do.
- 20:14Listen to me, you who want to live under the Law.
- 20:18Do you know what the Law really says?
- 20:22The Scriptures say that Abraham had 2 sons,
- 20:26one from his slave wife, and one from his freeborn
- 20:30wife. The son of the slave wife was born
- 20:33in a human attempt to bring about the fulfillment of
- 20:37God's promise. But the son of
- 20:41the freeborn wife was born as
- 20:44God's own fulfillment of His promise.
- 20:49Now, these 2 women serve as an illustration
- 20:53of God's 2 covenants. Hagar, the slave wife,
- 20:57represents Mount Sinai, where people first
- 21:01became enslaved to the law.
- 21:04And now Jerusalem is just like Mount
- 21:07Sinai in Arabia because she and her children live in
- 21:11slavery. But Sarah, the free woman, represents the
- 21:15heavenly Jerusalem, and she is our
- 21:19mother. This is what Isaiah meant when he prophesied,
- 21:22rejoice, O childless woman, break forth
- 21:26into loud and joyful song, even though you never
- 21:30gave birth to a child, for the woman who could bear no children now has
- 21:34more than all the other women.
- 21:38And you, dear brothers and sisters, are children of the
- 21:41promise, just like Isaac. And we who are
- 21:45born of the Holy Spirit are persecuted
- 21:48by those who want us to keep the law.
- 21:51Just as Isaac, the child of promise, was persecuted
- 21:56by Ishmael, the son of the slave wife. But what
- 22:00do the Scriptures say about that? Get rid of the slave and her son,
- 22:04for the son of the slave woman will not share the family
- 22:08inheritance with the free woman's son.
- 22:11So, dear brothers and sisters, we are not children of
- 22:16the slave woman obligated the law. We are
- 22:20children of the free woman,
- 22:22acceptable to God because of our faith.
- 22:31Psalm 62:1-12.
- 22:35I wait quietly before God, for my salvation comes
- 22:39from him. He alone is my rock and my
- 22:42salvation. My fortress where I will never be
- 22:46shaken. So many enemies against one man, all of them trying
- 22:50to kill me. To them, I'm just a broken-down wall
- 22:54or a tottering fence. They plan to topple me from my
- 22:58high position. They delight in telling lies
- 23:01about me. They are friendly to my face, but they curse
- 23:05me in their hearts. I wait quietly before
- 23:09God, for my hope is in him. He alone is my rock and
- 23:13my salvation, my fortress where I will not
- 23:16be shaken. My salvation and my honor come from God alone.
- 23:20He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me.
- 23:25O my people, trust in him at all times.
- 23:28Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.
- 23:33From the greatest to the lowliest,
- 23:36all are nothing in his sight. If you weigh them on the scales,
- 23:40they are lighter than a puff of air. Don't try to get rich by extortion
- 23:44or robbery, and if your wealth increases, don't make
- 23:48it the center of your life. God has spoken plainly, and I
- 23:52have heard it many times: Power, O God,
- 23:55belongs to you; unfailing love, O Lord,
- 23:59is yours. Surely you judge all people according to what
- 24:03they have done.
- 24:05Proverbs 23:19-21.
- 24:12My child, listen and be wise. Keep your heart
- 24:15on the right course. Do not carouse with drunkards
- 24:20and gluttons, for they are on their way to poverty. Too much
- 24:23sleep clothes a person with rags.
- 24:29I want to speak to you again from Galatians chapter 3
- 24:32and 4, and Paul is continuing his case
- 24:37with the Galatians about if they're going to walk under
- 24:41the law or if they're going to walk in faith by trusting in Jesus Christ.
- 24:48You can hear his passion in verse 9 of
- 24:53chapter 4. He says, and now that you have
- 24:57found God, or should I say now that God has found you,
- 25:01why do you want to go back again and become slaves once
- 25:05more to the weak and useless spiritual powers of this world?
- 25:10He goes on to say this charge: you are
- 25:15trying to find favor with God by what you do or don't
- 25:19do on certain days or months or seasons or
- 25:22years.
- 25:26That verse really, really packs a powerful punch,
- 25:31especially I speak to the people who are in
- 25:35the Hebrew Roots Messianic movement,
- 25:38those who keep the Sabbath, who keep the feasts, you know, the Passover
- 25:42and First Fruits and Shavuot and Sukkot
- 25:47and Feast of Tabernacles. Um,
- 25:50those are all wonderful, wonderful feasts, and they're— and they
- 25:55are beautiful shadow pictures that point us
- 25:58to Christ. But we're not to
- 26:02be worshiping the shadow. We're not to be looking only to the
- 26:06picture. We're to look to Christ himself. We're to
- 26:10stay connected to Jesus himself.
- 26:14And I think that this is really an issue and
- 26:18a problem in the Hebrew Roots world is that there
- 26:21are many, not necessarily all, but many in
- 26:25that movement who are trying to find favor with God by
- 26:30keeping the feasts, by keeping the Sabbath on certain
- 26:33days, the holy days, the Day of Atonement, the day of Yom Kippur,
- 26:37the Day of Trumpets, the Feast of Tabernacles.
- 26:41They're trying to earn favor and find favor
- 26:45with God by, by keeping these feasts on certain
- 26:49days or months or years. And Paul goes on
- 26:53to say, I fear for you. I'm afraid that all my hard work for you
- 26:56was worth nothing. I plead with you
- 27:00to live as I do, in freedom from these things, for I
- 27:04have become like you Gentiles were, free from
- 27:08the law. Now later on, he does a beautiful
- 27:12illustration, and he makes a comparison. He compares Hagar
- 27:17and Sarah. These are 2 wives that Abraham
- 27:21had, and God made a promise to Abraham
- 27:24and Sarah that they would one day have a son of their
- 27:27own. But many, many, many years went by, and the
- 27:31promise didn't seem to look
- 27:35like it was going to be fulfilled. So Sarah took matters in her own hand
- 27:39And she says to Abraham, honey, I want you to take my handmaiden
- 27:44Hagar. Take her and
- 27:48make a baby with her. And,
- 27:51you know, God doesn't seem like he's gonna fulfill this
- 27:55promise, so let's just make this happen.
- 27:59And so he lays with Hagar, and they have a son, and they call him
- 28:03Ishmael. But this was The son
- 28:07of the slave wife was born in a human attempt
- 28:11to bring about the fulfillment of God's promise.
- 28:16But the son of the freeborn wife,
- 28:19Sarah, giving birth to Isaac,
- 28:22the miracle child, was born as a result of God's own
- 28:26fulfillment of His promise.
- 28:29These 2 women serve as an illustration of God's
- 28:332 covenants. Hagar, the slave wife,
- 28:35represents Mount Sinai where the people became
- 28:40enslaved to the law.
- 28:44We are not to stand at Mount Sinai.
- 28:48Moses is not our head. We are to
- 28:52stand at Mount Zion. Jesus Christ is our
- 28:56head, and that comes by walking in
- 29:00faith, in believing in Jesus, as the Son of
- 29:04God, as our Savior, as our Messiah. She,
- 29:08Jerusalem, the Heavenly Jerusalem, is our mother. And so
- 29:13we are to walk by faith. We begin
- 29:17in faith and we continue in faith from day by day,
- 29:20hour by hour, moment by moment. We walk in faith,
- 29:24not in our own efforts, our own flesh, our own performance,
- 29:28our own keeping of the law, but it's all walking
- 29:32in faith. And so may we all stand
- 29:37at Mount Zion under the headship and
- 29:41the rulership and the kingship of Jesus Christ.
- 29:44May we not drift away from our connection and
- 29:48our relationship to Jesus and wander away and go to Mount
- 29:52Sinai and put all this emphasis and focus on
- 29:56Moses and the law and the commands and the Sabbath and the feasts and all
- 29:59of that. No. No, those are all
- 30:02shadow pictures. We don't worship the shadow picture. We worship the
- 30:06one who makes the shadow, and that is Jesus Christ
- 30:10himself. We are to walk in relationship
- 30:15with him and with him alone. Have a
- 30:19blessed day, and we'll see you tomorrow. Shalom.
- 30:29Adonai,
- 30:34we wish America.
- 30:43Yeah, yeah,
- 30:45Adonai,
- 30:50anavilka.
- 30:54We connect.
- 31:27The Aaronic Blessing from Numbers chapter 6,
- 31:3024 to 26.
- 31:34Adonai bless you and keep you.
- 31:37Adonai make his face to shine upon you and
- 31:41be gracious to you. Adonai lift up his countenance
- 31:45upon you and give you peace.
