- 0:02Speaker 1: This is a bramble Jam podcast. Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark,
- 0:24Speaker 1: a homemark review podcast. I'm Megan and I'm a longtime
- 0:26Speaker 1: homemark fan. On today's episode, we are going to be
- 0:29Speaker 1: discussing the Chicken Sisters season two episode six, titled A
- 0:34Speaker 1: Woman Always Knows, y'all, and today I am flying so low.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I had teased last week that we were going to
- 0:41Speaker 1: be joined by a very special co host this week,
- 0:43Speaker 1: and Wendy was going to be making her Chicken Sisters
- 0:47Speaker 1: season two review debut. Wendy is so sick, y'all, so
- 0:52Speaker 1: I'm flying solo on today's episode. Let's get into it.
- 0:57Speaker 1: First of all, as of yesterday, K did drop their
- 1:01Speaker 1: countdown to Christmas schedule for this season. There were some
- 1:04Speaker 1: surprises on that schedule. The full schedule, all of the dates,
- 1:08Speaker 1: all of the movies, some great photos are on our website,
- 1:11Speaker 1: Girls Gonehollmark dot com. That post is pinned right up top.
- 1:15Speaker 1: We also created a printable schedule to go along with that,
- 1:18Speaker 1: so you can print that out keep track of the
- 1:20Speaker 1: movies all season long. Check that out at Girls Gonehollmark
- 1:23Speaker 1: dot com. Let's talk the Chicken Sisters season two episode six.
- 1:26Speaker 1: This episode was directed by Jackie Gold. The writer is
- 1:29Speaker 1: Monoegopian and you mon' remember a few episodes back, I
- 1:32Speaker 1: mentioned that I had heard Mono on a podcast and
- 1:36Speaker 1: they introduced him as one of the writers on The
- 1:37Speaker 1: Chicken Sisters, And because the name was in my head,
- 1:40Speaker 1: I kept seeing him in the opening credits, credited as
- 1:42Speaker 1: a story editor for some of these episodes, while I
- 1:45Speaker 1: was so excited to see that he is the writer
- 1:48Speaker 1: on this episode for no reason other than I'm rooting
- 1:52Speaker 1: for this complete stranger. So congratulations Mono on your writing
- 1:56Speaker 1: credit on this episode of The Chicken Sisters. First impression
- 2:00Speaker 1: of this episode is this episode is as hectic as
- 2:04Speaker 1: the chain of command at City Hall. I'm going to
- 2:08Speaker 1: take a quick break and come back and talk about
- 2:09Speaker 1: what I liked about this episode. All right, let's talk
- 2:20Speaker 1: what we liked about this episode. What I really liked
- 2:22Speaker 1: about this episode is we have some things that have
- 2:25Speaker 1: been kind of simmering for a long time that finally
- 2:27Speaker 1: come to the forefront, and we get a few new dynamics,
- 2:31Speaker 1: new characters returning even to keep it lively, we have
- 2:35Speaker 1: some really dramatic moments, like that tornado montage, which we
- 2:39Speaker 1: will talk about in a minute, and we still get
- 2:41Speaker 1: some of those quirky, little small town moments. The humor
- 2:45Speaker 1: that I really like about the show also huge focus
- 2:51Speaker 1: on the independence of these women. I have some feedback
- 2:56Speaker 1: to share from a listener about that, So let's talk
- 2:58Speaker 1: Amanda's art. I love that she's getting some recognition. She's
- 3:02Speaker 1: finally getting something that's her own. She's not just one
- 3:05Speaker 1: of the Chicken sisters. That's something that she came into
- 3:09Speaker 1: through her family, through her marriage. Her art is something
- 3:12Speaker 1: that we've seen is important to her, and she's finally
- 3:15Speaker 1: getting some recognition for it. I like that we see
- 3:17Speaker 1: her wrestle with imposter syndrome. She can't totally believe people
- 3:22Speaker 1: are interested in seeing her work. It's very relatable. The
- 3:26Speaker 1: tension that we get with her wanting to express herself
- 3:30Speaker 1: artistically and also feeling maybe like calling herself an artist.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Is this bridge too far? Is a really interesting dynamic.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Nancy for me, has the absolute best storyline in this
- 3:40Speaker 1: entire episode. This is a banner episode for her. When
- 3:43Speaker 1: she yells at Frank Junior for burning bridges instead of
- 3:47Speaker 1: building them. That was a much needed moment for her,
- 3:50Speaker 1: and then she confronts Clayton. I'm so glad she did it.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I loved May's confrontation of Clayton too, but Nancy's We
- 3:59Speaker 1: already know that May is a strong independent woman. When
- 4:02Speaker 1: Nancy gives it to Clayton in her defensive guests, I
- 4:06Speaker 1: loved it. Plus, Nancy has the added bonus of having
- 4:10Speaker 1: known Clayton since their youth. She spent so much time
- 4:14Speaker 1: in her life in this series being a peacekeeper, and
- 4:17Speaker 1: now we're seeing her really stand up in her own
- 4:20Speaker 1: voice and stand up for the people who are important
- 4:23Speaker 1: to her. Gruster is back. Honestly, I had kind of
- 4:27Speaker 1: forgotten about him in the beginning of the season. I
- 4:30Speaker 1: was hoping we would see him. I loved that hint
- 4:33Speaker 1: of a romance we were seeing between Gruster and Sabrina
- 4:36Speaker 1: at the end of last season. But he's such a
- 4:39Speaker 1: refreshing presence in the show and another man in this
- 4:43Speaker 1: universe who does not suck, which is unfortunately rarer than
- 4:47Speaker 1: it should be. He comes back, there's no fanfare, he
- 4:50Speaker 1: just hops right into things. My absolute favorite part of
- 4:54Speaker 1: this episode is the Tornado montage. It's a real standout.
- 4:57Speaker 1: It's very dramatic, Nancy begging the people in the town
- 5:01Speaker 1: hall to ring the alarm while May is stuck in
- 5:05Speaker 1: the storm. I mean, the metaphor does beat you over
- 5:07Speaker 1: the head a little bit there, but I did feel
- 5:10Speaker 1: like they gave us a strong sense of urgency. I
- 5:13Speaker 1: do kind of wish that they had moved Gus out
- 5:15Speaker 1: of that bed after having the discussion about the tree
- 5:18Speaker 1: being very dangerous but nevertheless very dramatic. It did make
- 5:22Speaker 1: the stakes feel quite high, and it pushed people like
- 5:26Speaker 1: Nancy to make some decisions that we would not have
- 5:30Speaker 1: seen them make in recent history. My silent co host
- 5:34Speaker 1: on this episode is listener Paula, who sent us an
- 5:36Speaker 1: email about this episode. Paula's a big fan of the show,
- 5:39Speaker 1: has been since season one, and she's always been pushing
- 5:43Speaker 1: us to see some of the deeper themes in this show.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And so, Paula, you didn't know this, but you are
- 5:48Speaker 1: my co host for this episode, and I would like
- 5:50Speaker 1: to share some of Paula's thoughts. Paula says, I love
- 5:53Speaker 1: how Amanda and Nancy, who both did the right thing
- 5:57Speaker 1: in quotation marks by marrying poor, are asserting their independence
- 6:02Speaker 1: while the independent and successful May and Sabrina have found
- 6:05Speaker 1: reliable strong men to help them. I love how Gruster
- 6:09Speaker 1: just came back and went to work. It was so
- 6:12Speaker 1: fun to watch. I agree with all of that. I
- 6:16Speaker 1: love that perspective of Counteract. I love that perspective of
- 6:22Speaker 1: the contrast between Amanda and Nancy and Sabrina and Guster
- 6:27Speaker 1: and how that's manifesting in their lives now. One of
- 6:30Speaker 1: my favorite things about this show are the small moments
- 6:33Speaker 1: of humor, and in this episode that is no exception.
- 6:36Speaker 1: We get Sergio reading Shauna's smut to Dus. It's a
- 6:40Speaker 1: perfect mix of hilarious and also slightly awkward, and our
- 6:46Speaker 1: town renaissance woman Shauna popping up is the process server.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I love that the show uses her for these surprise,
- 6:52Speaker 1: little comic moments. There really is no shortage of ways
- 6:55Speaker 1: in which she can pop up, and it's a running
- 6:59Speaker 1: bit that could have run out of usefulness, and I
- 7:02Speaker 1: think they've used it appropriately in this season. Let's talk wishes.
- 7:07Speaker 1: My two wishes are for my two least favorite characters
- 7:10Speaker 1: in this show to see themselves out. First of all, Clayton,
- 7:14Speaker 1: what an absolute disappointment. I have seen the writing on
- 7:17Speaker 1: the wall for this man all season long. I have
- 7:20Speaker 1: question whether or not his intentions were true. We saw
- 7:23Speaker 1: hints of it in last episode, and it seems very
- 7:26Speaker 1: clear that Clayton is a big old disappointment. He refers
- 7:31Speaker 1: to Gus's MS as her situation, like it's just a
- 7:34Speaker 1: minor inconvenience before they can jet off together. It was
- 7:37Speaker 1: just downright cruel. He has the bedside manner of a rock.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Calling him the worst nurse is not an exaggeration. They
- 7:44Speaker 1: painted a very clear picture of a man who was
- 7:47Speaker 1: not here for a family. He was not here to
- 7:50Speaker 1: be a partner. He was looking for a good time,
- 7:54Speaker 1: looking for a second act in life, and hoping to
- 7:57Speaker 1: perhaps have someone along by his side, but only as
- 8:02Speaker 1: it fit his needs. Frank Junior, the man has absolutely
- 8:06Speaker 1: no remorse. And as much as I said I'm not
- 8:08Speaker 1: interested in a Frank Junior redemption story and I wouldn't
- 8:12Speaker 1: really even buy one, there is a part of me
- 8:15Speaker 1: that would like to see him feel a little bit sorry.
- 8:19Speaker 1: We do still have two episodes left in this season.
- 8:21Speaker 1: One of my favorite lines comes from listener Paula's email,
- 8:26Speaker 1: who says the cluckery being that packed with men was
- 8:29Speaker 1: very creepy. Honestly, I'm glad she sent this email. Because
- 8:34Speaker 1: all I noticed was the big line. But when I
- 8:36Speaker 1: went back and rewatched that scene, it's just a big
- 8:38Speaker 1: line of men waiting outside to support Frank Junior's new
- 8:42Speaker 1: enterprise now that the chicken does not suck. Unfortunately, Frank
- 8:47Speaker 1: Junior still does in did you see that moments? I
- 8:51Speaker 1: would really like to know why on earth we are
- 8:54Speaker 1: setting up the wedding so far in advance. At an
- 8:58Speaker 1: outdoor wedding, those chairs need to go up the day of,
- 9:01Speaker 1: even in the best weather. They're going to wake up
- 9:03Speaker 1: and be dewy from sitting out overnight. They'll be blown over,
- 9:08Speaker 1: covered in dirt. While I understand the purpose of the
- 9:11Speaker 1: metaphor setting up an outdoor wedding days in advance, it's
- 9:15Speaker 1: still unclear to me exactly when May's wedding is going
- 9:17Speaker 1: to be. But setting up these outdoor chairs at least
- 9:21Speaker 1: days in advance didn't make a whole lot of sense
- 9:23Speaker 1: to me, other than as a vehicle to get Frankie
- 9:26Speaker 1: and Lindsay together, to get Gruster along, to help out
- 9:29Speaker 1: to have that great moment where May stands in the
- 9:31Speaker 1: wreckage of her wedding. I'm curious to see how the
- 9:35Speaker 1: wedding will pivot going forward? Small digit see that question?
- 9:42Speaker 1: Is this town going to be pastor less while Bo
- 9:45Speaker 1: travels He's going to be gone for several months. This
- 9:48Speaker 1: is a small town. He seems to be the one
- 9:51Speaker 1: and only pastor in town. What are we doing to
- 9:54Speaker 1: fill that hole? My last did you see that is
- 9:57Speaker 1: does this town really not have a contingency for if
- 10:00Speaker 1: the mayor is unavailable to activate the tornado siren? Because
- 10:05Speaker 1: while I understand his heart attack moment was quite dramatic
- 10:08Speaker 1: and it took him out of the place, there are
- 10:10Speaker 1: any number of reasons why he might be unreachable, super
- 10:13Speaker 1: innocuous ones. So this town needs to have a better
- 10:17Speaker 1: chain of command. We have that scene earlier in the
- 10:20Speaker 1: episode where may is trying to get her marriage license
- 10:22Speaker 1: and her name is spelled incorrectly, and so they can't
- 10:26Speaker 1: do I don't understand why they cannot just retype the license,
- 10:30Speaker 1: fix the train arm, have a contingency plan. People, Is
- 10:33Speaker 1: Nancy going to be the new mayor? I don't know,
- 10:36Speaker 1: my feathered friend of the week, it should come as
- 10:39Speaker 1: no surprise. Is our girl Nancy hands down, She finds
- 10:44Speaker 1: her voice, she stands her ground, She refuses to let
- 10:46Speaker 1: the men around her keep bulldozing her. She's really been
- 10:49Speaker 1: a good girl for too long, and watching her step
- 10:52Speaker 1: into her power is super satisfying. Thank you for listening
