- 0:01Patients have been told for years they might never read
- 0:04again. There's a story behind that.
- 0:08This is your daily message from Chad Room 1173 to upgrade your
- 0:12mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:15Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:17yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:19Mitch Care Cart. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:22If you have sight, you see what is happening.
- 0:24Upgraded thinking reaches for insight to know why it's
- 0:27happening. Here's the story. 8 million
- 0:31people around the world have geographic atrophy, the advanced
- 0:35form of macular degeneration that eats away the center of
- 0:38your vision. Every drug on the market for it
- 0:41only slows how fast you go blind.
- 0:43None of them gives anything back.
- 0:45Doctors have gently told patients for years that this is
- 0:48just the deal. Manage the loss.
- 0:51That's the best one can look forward to.
- 0:53Until this year. A company called Science Corp,
- 0:57started by Max Hodak, A Neuralink Co founder, finished a
- 1:00project started at Stanford 2 decades ago and passed through a
- 1:04bankrupt French company on the way to market.
- 1:07They built a chip the size of a pin head and slid it under the
- 1:11retina. Patients wear a pair of glasses
- 1:14with a camera built into the frame.
- 1:16The camera reads the room and beams it onto the chip in
- 1:19infrared light, invisible so it doesn't fight with whatever
- 1:23vision they have left. The chip bypasses the damage
- 1:26photoreceptors and fires the surviving relay cells beneath
- 1:30the retina, the inner retinal cells the disease largely
- 1:34spared. The brain, trained over months,
- 1:37learns to read the signal as sight.
- 1:41In the trial, 8 out of 10 patients can read letters,
- 1:45numbers, words. Again, some hadn't in years.
- 1:49It's not sharp, it's not color, it's grayscale.
- 1:52It takes months of retraining and it lands around somewhere
- 1:56around 2160. Vision nowhere close to normal.
- 2:01Somebody's going to look at that number and call it small.
- 2:05That's sight talking. Insight knows better.
- 2:09Nobody complained about the first light bulbs being too dim.
- 2:12They've been sitting in the dark 20 years of trying to solve a
- 2:16problem so hard that the giants in the industry left it alone
- 2:20and somebody else had to pick it up.
- 2:22That's not luck. That's a person who kept seeing
- 2:26why it mattered long after everyone else stopped seeing it
- 2:29at all. The site is the headline.
- 2:32The Insight is the real story. The better story to tell
- 2:36yourself is I don't need the whole picture back, I need
- 2:40enough to move. You're not always going to get
- 2:442020 vision, almost nobody does. But insight will get you moving
- 2:48when sight alone would keep you sitting in the dark waiting for
- 2:52perfect. Maybe you're stuck focusing on
- 2:55sight when what you need is insight.
- 2:59If you've got a story like this one, somebody with the insight
- 3:02to keep working on a problem others thought couldn't be
- 3:04fixed, I genuinely like to read it.
- 3:07Send it to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:11Here's what happens next. You text one person this
- 3:14question. What have you been told can't be
- 3:17fixed? You can encourage them by
- 3:19letting them know someone is probably working on it.
- 3:23And one more thing. If you want the fuller version
- 3:26of this, my book, The Most Powerful Story in the World is
- 3:29free at from chad.gumroad.com. The transcript of this message
- 3:34and hundreds of others are always available at
