- 0:01TV show The Good Doctor has been getting a lot of controversy
- 0:04around autism because of some memes falling out of the
- 0:06Internet. Let's get into guys.
- 0:08Welcome back to the Aspy world. My name is Dan and I have autism
- 0:10and ADHD can make weekly videos all about this stuff.
- 0:12So if you're new around here, make sure hit the subscribe
- 0:15button down below, guys. So I've been seeing loads of
- 0:19memes about the good doctor on the Internet.
- 0:20And I thought, OK, whatever, you know, and they're related to
- 0:22this TV show and the TV show was called The Good Doctor.
- 0:25Now the Good Doctor is a show that is portraying the life of a
- 0:28young medical director or a a physician who is on the autism
- 0:34spectrum, but is highly gifted, highly talented, and he goes to
- 0:37this hospital and he's like just really good at what he does.
- 0:40However, the show features the main character who has these
- 0:43doctor skills and he has, you know, social interaction
- 0:46mannerisms that are kind of unique and, and and subject to
- 0:49kind of autism because in it they talk about him being on the
- 0:52autism spectrum. But then some of the
- 0:54characteristics obviously are, are not all the characteristics
- 0:57of autism and not everybody with autism will display like this
- 0:59guy. However, a lot of the memes have
- 1:02been coming out basically saying that the stereotypes of autism
- 1:06are being kind of damaged because it's damaging the autumn
- 1:09community that the stereotypes of autism are coming out in
- 1:11memes like how he cries or how he outbursts, how he has
- 1:14emotional, I don't know, like meltdowns and stuff like that.
- 1:17Some of the individuals from who are awesome advocates express
- 1:21their concerns about the memes pushing the stereotypes and the
- 1:24trivializing changes faced by people with autism.
- 1:27I'm basically saying that like, because autism has very serious
- 1:29implications and has very serious issues with like
- 1:33meltdowns and burnouts and things like that.
- 1:34By creating memes out of those, you kind of delegitimize the the
- 1:39issues and the struggles that people on autism kind of go
- 1:41through. And I kind of get it.
- 1:42I get what they're trying to say.
- 1:43At the same time, I think it's just a meme and it's kind of
- 1:46like throw away, but I can understand how that would kind
- 1:48of be detrimental to somebody and how somebody could take that
- 1:51really offensively or somebody could just take that and feel
- 1:53quite, you know, down about somebody making fun of their
- 1:56their condition. Now, whatever the the scope is,
- 1:59I think what this is doing is raising awareness of the show,
- 2:02the good doctor, which I think is pretty decent.
- 2:04It's a good show. And by doing that, you're
- 2:06raising awareness of autism and people becoming more
- 2:08understanding of the issues that autism could face.
- 2:10So I think there's good and bad on both parts of this.
- 2:13I think it's good for outreach and good to spread the message
- 2:15of autism. But I think maybe the way it's
- 2:18being handled is, is is difficult.
- 2:20So maybe we should start good campaigns for autism and unhappy
- 2:23campaigns for autism, showing how kind of, you know, the
- 2:26struggles are real and the struggles are really difficult
- 2:28for us. I would love to know your
- 2:30comments. Please put a comment down below
- 2:31if you have anything to add to this.
