- 1:17Speaker 2: doing anything fun?
- 1:19Speaker 3: Just been hanging out man the weather, which I know
- 1:23Speaker 3: everyone is really curious to know what's been happening in Minnesota.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Has the weather been like it's been really up and down,
- 1:29Speaker 3: And I actually kind of like that.
- 1:31Speaker 2: So yeah, I'm excited going.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Up to.
- 1:35Speaker 2: The cabin with the family. That'll be fun. We'll be
- 1:42Speaker 2: fun to chill out. Man, I don't know, it's gonna
- 1:44Speaker 2: be fun. I love that. Otherwise, good, how about you?
- 1:46Speaker 5: What have you been doing.
- 1:48Speaker 2: It was a beautiful day today and I decided to
- 1:51Speaker 2: go out and get all of our patio furniture and
- 1:55Speaker 2: all that stuff figured out on the deck. So then
- 1:58Speaker 2: we had a little dinner out on the deck tonight,
- 2:03Speaker 2: which was super nice, lovely. Yeah, so that was nice.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Got some chores done and it was a nice little
- 2:11Speaker 2: family time, and then we played some catch because both
- 2:14Speaker 2: the kids are going to be starting up baseball and softball,
- 2:17Speaker 2: so nice. Dude. Yeah, we're gonna have a business. We're
- 2:21Speaker 2: gonna have to talk schedule because i'd like to come
- 2:23Speaker 2: watch some games. I think that would be super fun, dude,
- 2:25Speaker 2: that'd be fun. Yeah, they're they're a blast because they're not.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Little league games, like you know, it's not like super
- 2:33Speaker 3: intense obviously.
- 2:35Speaker 2: They're not super competitive yet at all, and it's just
- 2:37Speaker 2: a blast. It's fun, nice night. Yeah. They just throw
- 2:42Speaker 2: as many pitches as the kid needs to hit it,
- 2:44Speaker 2: and it's just so much fun. Yeah. Great, I would
- 2:47Speaker 2: have excelled in that sort of environment. It's great. I
- 2:51Speaker 2: was the kid in the in the field just singing
- 2:53Speaker 2: to myself and looking at flowers and things. I'm sure sure,
- 2:59Speaker 2: oh over there, I love it. Yeah. Have you been
- 3:04Speaker 2: watching any films lately? I have so. Last week the
- 3:08Speaker 2: kids had a day off because you know, let's just
- 3:11Speaker 2: have more days off, and Lydia had a girl's day
- 3:15Speaker 2: with Kels getting their hair dead. With our friend Anne
- 3:19Speaker 2: and Charlie and I went to the movies and we
- 3:22Speaker 2: saw the new the Super Mario Galaxy movie. Oh yeah,
- 3:26Speaker 2: how was it? It was okay, it was okay, Yeah,
- 3:34Speaker 2: we all love the first one. Okay, that's a great time.
- 3:37Speaker 2: So when we got about the ticket, I was wondering
- 3:39Speaker 2: why it was so expensive. It was because it was
- 3:40Speaker 2: on the giant Imax screen. Fun, and it was visually
- 3:44Speaker 2: so impressive. Yeah. The plot though, is just kind of
- 3:49Speaker 2: all over the place. It felt like they were just
- 3:52Speaker 2: trying to jam pack as many different universes as they could,
- 3:56Speaker 2: which was super fun to look at. But I was
- 3:59Speaker 2: also like I don't really care what's.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Happening in the story, and you're like, oh, you didn't
- 4:04Speaker 3: really draw me in though, or.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Yeah, where I felt like I felt like I was
- 4:08Speaker 2: into the plot in the first one, yes, and I wasn't.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I wasn't so much this time. Charlie, however, loved it
- 4:16Speaker 2: and he was looking at me and he was so excited,
- 4:18Speaker 2: and you was just like, thank you so much for
- 4:21Speaker 2: bringing me to this. This is awesome. I was like, dude,
- 4:24Speaker 2: this is great.
- 4:24Speaker 3: That's worth every penny every second I have to be
- 4:27Speaker 3: in here if you love it that much.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, he was so into it. That's so
- 4:32Speaker 2: I wasn't super invested in the story, but he loved it,
- 4:34Speaker 2: and that's all that matters. Yeah, I feel like I've
- 4:36Speaker 2: heard that from a couple of people. I haven't.
- 4:38Speaker 3: I haven't seen it yet, but I forgot fingers too,
- 4:41Speaker 3: just kind of like, I mean, it's not bad, but
- 4:43Speaker 3: it's just.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Like, but yeah, you thrushed it a bit this time
- 4:46Speaker 2: or something. I don't know. Yeah, I don't know. And
- 4:48Speaker 2: they even got like a bunch of new characters and
- 4:53Speaker 2: voices and stuff, which was fun, but yeah, I don't know,
- 4:57Speaker 2: it's definitely one that I could have waited for. But
- 5:00Speaker 2: I mean, I'm glad that we went, but I wouldn't
- 5:02Speaker 2: have spent like the whatever twenty five exech right right,
- 5:06Speaker 2: you know? Yeah? Well nice? Yeah? What what was the
- 5:11Speaker 2: last movie you watched? I watched.
- 5:13Speaker 3: I went to the theater and saw Nirvana, the band,
- 5:16Speaker 3: the show, the movie.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I've heard so much about this. I don't know why
- 5:19Speaker 2: I haven't seen it yet. You what do you think did.
- 5:21Speaker 3: You ever see the show? Because apparently it was a
- 5:24Speaker 3: show first?
- 5:25Speaker 2: Oh no, I didn't know that it was a series first.
- 5:28Speaker 3: I guess, well, no, no, it was an amusing name.
- 5:32Speaker 3: I don't really know. Yeah, it's a great question, and
- 5:35Speaker 3: I don't know the answer.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I guess. So you didn't know it was a show either.
- 5:38Speaker 3: I didn't know it certainly had never seen it. This
- 5:43Speaker 3: movie is bonkers, and maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty
- 5:48Speaker 3: sure it was a show first. Anyway, I never I
- 5:51Speaker 3: didn't know anything about these dudes. I didn't know anything
- 5:53Speaker 3: about this stuff. They do this weird hybrid of like
- 5:57Speaker 3: live action but also scripted and plotted out.
- 6:03Speaker 2: So they they're.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Canadian, So maybe it was a Canadian thing because they're
- 6:07Speaker 3: in Toronto the whole time is just a part of it.
- 6:10Speaker 3: And this is like a weird comedy show slash just
- 6:17Speaker 3: like they're just being bizarre. It is a It is
- 6:21Speaker 3: like a love a love letter to back to the
- 6:23Speaker 3: Future in a lot of ways, which is great. From
- 6:27Speaker 3: the title, yep, same same, or the trailer.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I watched the trailer in a theater and I was like,
- 6:33Speaker 2: what is happening with this?
- 6:35Speaker 3: And why do I not know anything about this? This
- 6:37Speaker 3: is crazy, super funny, very like non sequitor humor, very
- 6:44Speaker 3: you know, off the wall stuff. But then they do
- 6:47Speaker 3: like they have this plot. I forget what it's called.
- 6:50Speaker 3: What's the big the space needle type thing in Toronto.
- 6:54Speaker 2: It doesn't matter, CN Tower or something like that. But
- 6:57Speaker 2: I don't know that. You know that thing is right
- 7:00Speaker 2: by the ball of course, yes, yes, I just don't
- 7:02Speaker 2: know what it's called.
- 7:03Speaker 3: So there's a plot point that they are going and
- 7:05Speaker 3: it's super early, so I'm not giving anything away, but
- 7:07Speaker 3: they are going to parachute into the baseball.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Fields to tell that's Rogers Center.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Nice I didn't know that.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Nicely done.
- 7:18Speaker 3: But they're gonna They're gonna like parachute in there and
- 7:22Speaker 3: tell people about a band, like a gig that they
- 7:25Speaker 3: have that night. That's like the plan, and so like
- 7:28Speaker 3: that's obviously all they don't actually do that and all
- 7:32Speaker 3: these things.
- 7:32Speaker 2: But what they do is they go.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Outside of that tower and they do they walk up
- 7:39Speaker 3: to people just like people that are in real life
- 7:41Speaker 3: there and ask them really weird questions and do kind
- 7:44Speaker 3: of interview style and integrate that into the plot of
- 7:46Speaker 3: the movie in a really fun way. That that worked
- 7:49Speaker 3: for me, and that it sounds weirder than it is
- 7:52Speaker 3: when it actually happens. It's very strange. But if you
- 7:57Speaker 3: are a movie neard, you're gonna love this movie. So funny,
- 8:01Speaker 3: very like fresh and inventive. I've never seen anything quite
- 8:05Speaker 3: like it, you know, had like odes of a lot
- 8:08Speaker 3: of other things in it.
- 8:10Speaker 2: I really liked it, man, I thought it was really fun.
- 8:12Speaker 3: I suggest people watch it. But it's it's also one
- 8:16Speaker 3: of it's kind of like the oh what's the cat
- 8:19Speaker 3: on HBO? He does the really tim Rabbit. It's kind
- 8:23Speaker 3: of like his though, where I feel like, if you're in,
- 8:26Speaker 3: you're in. But if that you're going to know in
- 8:29Speaker 3: about ten minutes and be like sure.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Let's move on to something. Yeah, Yeah, yeah.
- 8:34Speaker 3: I feel like it's it's a very particular brand, but
- 8:37Speaker 3: I really liked it.
- 8:38Speaker 2: I think you're gonna dig it for sure. Cool. Yeah,
- 8:40Speaker 2: I'll have to check it out. So check it out.
- 8:43Speaker 2: How about streaming?
- 8:44Speaker 3: Have you been streaming in here?
- 8:45Speaker 2: I have been. I had brought this up to you
- 8:47Speaker 2: during during our last Q and A. But I had
- 8:51Speaker 2: started a show. It's been out for a few years
- 8:55Speaker 2: and it's called Resident Alien and it features in Tudic.
- 9:00Speaker 2: It's currently on Netflix. They have three seasons on there,
- 9:07Speaker 2: but it was definitely on like regular TV because there's
- 9:12Speaker 2: like little like commercial break spots O fun. Yeah, which
- 9:16Speaker 2: is interesting. Does feel so weird now, don't they? Oh? Yeah, okay,
- 9:21Speaker 2: I think it was on the sci Fi Channel initially
- 9:26Speaker 2: and so yeah Fi. Yeah. So Alan Tudic is an
- 9:32Speaker 2: alien that crashes down to Earth and he's in small
- 9:37Speaker 2: town Colorado. It's I think it's a made up town
- 9:40Speaker 2: called Patients. But anyway, he becomes the doctor there that's
- 9:47Speaker 2: kind of the body that he took over, and it's
- 9:52Speaker 2: just him, you know, kind of a fish out of
- 9:54Speaker 2: water or an alien out of water and just trying
- 9:58Speaker 2: to figure out how to be a human. And there's
- 10:02Speaker 2: a lot of other little interesting plot points, like the
- 10:05Speaker 2: supporting cast is really fun in it and it makes
- 10:07Speaker 2: the show. There's a lady named Alice Wetterlind who what
- 10:11Speaker 2: I wasn't familiar with. Her name is Darcy Bloom in
- 10:15Speaker 2: the show, and she is so funny. And I just
- 10:19Speaker 2: saw that she she is from Minneapolis, which is kind
- 10:22Speaker 2: of fun.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Oh, I didn't know that she was in Mike and
- 10:26Speaker 3: Paved wedding dates I recognize yep.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a small part, but that was one
- 10:32Speaker 2: of the few few credits that I saw that I
- 10:36Speaker 2: recognized hers. But but yeah, everybody's really fun in it.
- 10:39Speaker 2: And Alan Tudic is perfect in that role. Just he
- 10:43Speaker 2: makes so many goofy faces and the voices and just
- 10:48Speaker 2: he really he leads the show well and I can't
- 10:52Speaker 2: imagine anybody else doing that role. Oh and one fun thing,
- 10:56Speaker 2: j Michael Troutman, who is on the show Everyone in
- 11:00Speaker 2: a while with us. His wife his now wife, is
- 11:05Speaker 2: a lot of the characters on the show as well. Well,
- 11:07Speaker 2: that's fun. Yeah. Oh and they have the.
- 11:12Speaker 3: The Bert Kreischer Show too. I haven't checked that out. Yeah,
- 11:15Speaker 3: she's on the Free Burt Show. Yeah, I forgot that.
- 11:17Speaker 2: He had told us about that one of the last
- 11:19Speaker 2: times he was on fun. But that's great. I've been
- 11:24Speaker 2: really enjoying it. They're like forty five minute episodes. Okay,
- 11:28Speaker 2: there's ten of them in the first season. It's funny
- 11:31Speaker 2: seasons have there been? There's three? But I think there
- 11:34Speaker 2: is a new season coming. Nice dude. Possibly that's really cool,
- 11:40Speaker 2: but I don't know. I'm just seeing that from the
- 11:42Speaker 2: poster on IMDb, and that could be an old one.
- 11:45Speaker 3: So sure it does say forty four episodes and there's
- 11:48Speaker 3: a fourth season.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Yeah. In June, no June of last year, a fourth
- 11:55Speaker 2: season came out. Oh okay, so there's four seasons. Cool,
- 11:58Speaker 2: I guess, but there might be more coming. I don't Yeah,
- 12:01Speaker 2: it's a good time though. I would recommend it. It's
- 12:03Speaker 2: on Netflix. That's cool. What have you been streaming? So?
- 12:07Speaker 2: I truly did go go gaga for Gosling.
- 12:11Speaker 3: I checked out one of his films that I had
- 12:13Speaker 3: never seen. He was nominated for I think Best Supporting
- 12:18Speaker 3: Actor for this one. I checked out Half Nelson, which
- 12:21Speaker 3: I had never seen nor really heard of. To be honest, Yeah,
- 12:26Speaker 3: I was kind of just looking through his filmography and
- 12:30Speaker 3: was like, oh, well, I mean he must be good,
- 12:32Speaker 3: right if he got nominated, and right it was highly
- 12:36Speaker 3: rated a really not like a fun movie. But his
- 12:41Speaker 3: performance really was amazing in this. I felt a little
- 12:46Speaker 3: bit like, oh, I bet this was even more amazing
- 12:49Speaker 3: before we knew he was gonna like churn out just
- 12:51Speaker 3: great performance after great performance.
- 12:53Speaker 2: You know.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Now now it's just kind of like, yay, he's great
- 12:56Speaker 3: and everything. I don't know, but he is like a
- 12:59Speaker 3: junior high high school junior high school teacher and teaching
- 13:06Speaker 3: in like inner city, you know, kind of a rough
- 13:09Speaker 3: part of town, and he is like befriending the kids
- 13:13Speaker 3: and trying to be a good role model and all
- 13:16Speaker 3: these things. But also at the same time he has a.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Quite a bit of a little drug problem.
- 13:23Speaker 3: So it is the drama goes out from there as
- 13:27Speaker 3: he sort of just tries to navigate these two different worlds,
- 13:30Speaker 3: both him and you know, what he's expected to be,
- 13:34Speaker 3: what he tries to be, and then also like these
- 13:36Speaker 3: kids as they deal with like real life stuff happening
- 13:38Speaker 3: around them and stuff.
- 13:39Speaker 2: It was really good. I really enjoyed the art of it.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Like I said, it wasn't necessarily fun to watch, but
- 13:47Speaker 3: it wasn't an absolute Trudge either, right. I really liked it,
- 13:51Speaker 3: and I thought he was He was pretty.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Great in it. But I think he's pretty great and everything,
- 13:55Speaker 2: so yeah, he is. I saw when it came out,
- 13:59Speaker 2: but have seen it. Okay, I have seen it, But dude,
- 14:02Speaker 2: I couldn't tell you much about it.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I get that, because it really is just it's
- 14:08Speaker 3: mostly just him, you know, reacting to folks around him
- 14:12Speaker 3: and stuff. Well, yeah, it's it's it's good and cringey
- 14:17Speaker 3: and tough to watch it parts, but I enjoyed it.
- 14:20Speaker 3: I had to rent it. It wasn't actually streaming anywhere,
- 14:24Speaker 3: although it looks like you amc Plus maybe has it
- 14:27Speaker 3: if folks have that sort of a thing. I don't know,
- 14:29Speaker 3: but I thought it was worth checking out. If you're
- 14:34Speaker 3: into that kind of a thing.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Check it out too, check it out, cool man.
- 14:38Speaker 3: It's kind of the best I got. It was fun
- 14:40Speaker 3: to watch, though, to see him because it's back from
- 14:43Speaker 3: two thousand and six. I was like, damn, well, I
- 14:45Speaker 3: definitely didn't see this back in the day. Yeah, so
- 14:49Speaker 3: pretty well, but yeah, what do you think should we
- 14:51Speaker 3: do if you plug herrounds?
- 14:52Speaker 2: Yeah? All right, Well, you guys can puss this.

- 17:05Speaker 2: even though I saw there is snow in the yeah,
- 17:10Speaker 2: but I saw it earlier. I was like, it's not
- 17:12Speaker 2: gonna snow that much. It'll be fine, but bring those
- 17:15Speaker 2: cushions in, you'll be fine. Yeah. We got to eat
- 17:17Speaker 2: outside today and it was. Oh it was just lovely.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Oh yeah, sounds nice.
- 17:23Speaker 2: I just love it. But how have you been, man?
- 17:25Speaker 2: Anything new and exciting? No?
- 17:27Speaker 5: Same old, same old, living the dream. Get ready to
- 17:31Speaker 5: watch them baseball this summer. Twins are going good.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Yeah, dude, love that I went to a Twins game.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Have you been to a Twins game yet? This year?
- 17:40Speaker 5: I have not. No, it's been kind of miserable. Mostly yeah,
- 17:44Speaker 5: mostly games.
- 17:45Speaker 2: It was. It was a daytime game last week, and uh,
- 17:51Speaker 2: it was like forty five and when I would just
- 17:54Speaker 2: like move where it was sunny, and I just kept
- 17:56Speaker 2: moving throughout the stadium because there really weren't that many people.
- 17:59Speaker 2: I have to look.
- 18:00Speaker 5: It was pretty easy. Luckily, no one's shown up yet.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Yep. But strategy, we should get a crew together. That
- 18:07Speaker 2: would be so much fun fun. It's been a while.
- 18:11Speaker 5: Yes, I almost called to you guys the other week
- 18:14Speaker 5: to uh see if you had seen Hail Mary yet.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Oh man, it's going to be our next episode that
- 18:20Speaker 2: comes out. Hold on when people hear this. It was
- 18:24Speaker 2: the last episode episode when they got two weeks ago.
- 18:27Speaker 2: I don't know. Time is a flat circle. It's confusing,
- 18:31Speaker 2: it's confusing, but.
- 18:34Speaker 5: I like it. Yeah, I hate going to the theater.
- 18:36Speaker 5: I had a guy I have to tell my theater story,
- 18:38Speaker 5: which is prod up in the movie by the brother
- 18:41Speaker 5: of the ex boyfriend Doug, Doug's brother. Theater suck. You know,
- 18:45Speaker 5: having a nice stereo system at home is better because
- 18:48Speaker 5: people they have their phones out. And I was at
- 18:51Speaker 5: Proderick Hail Mary. In every needle Drop, this guy in
- 18:53Speaker 5: front of me, their own in front of me would
- 18:55Speaker 5: take out his phone and he held it up high
- 18:57Speaker 5: for some reason. And he would every time go to
- 19:01Speaker 5: Shazam and see the name of the song every needle Dragon.
- 19:04Speaker 5: So then I'd hear a song in the movie, like
- 19:06Speaker 5: when they started karaoke, just look at him instead of
- 19:09Speaker 5: the movie. I just started doing signing of the times
- 19:11Speaker 5: I'm looking at this idiot and sure enough, just Sam.
- 19:16Speaker 5: I wish I had like a box of minems to
- 19:18Speaker 5: chuck out his head.
- 19:19Speaker 2: I would have handled that well. I don't do well
- 19:22Speaker 2: with the it drives.
- 19:24Speaker 5: Every time I go to a movie I get he
- 19:27Speaker 5: makes me something.
- 19:28Speaker 2: It hurts my insids a little bit.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Yeah, sometimes that I loved the movie.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Sometimes I'll have to take notes if we're going to
- 19:36Speaker 2: be doing and so I always just go way in
- 19:40Speaker 2: the back, so and if there's anybody next to me,
- 19:42Speaker 2: I will exactly that.
- 19:46Speaker 5: You could turn your brightness down with your brain all
- 19:48Speaker 5: the way down, and you keep the phone below your Yeah, freaking.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I turned full old man.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Especially if someone takes their phone out and the brightness
- 19:58Speaker 3: is up, I'll just.
- 19:59Speaker 2: What are we do? But what are we doing here?
- 20:02Speaker 2: What's happening? Yeah? Right, the passive aggressive clearing of the throat.
- 20:12Speaker 2: I'm so bad that I now will say things to people.
- 20:15Speaker 2: And the one time when I slipped on.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Something, it kicked the ever moving hell out of the
- 20:20Speaker 3: seat in front of the guy in front of me.
- 20:23Speaker 3: These guys thought he had his phone out and I
- 20:25Speaker 3: was just giving him the business.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Dude, did we tell you that story, Timmy? It was
- 20:29Speaker 2: so Remember we saw the movie Twisters the Sears, Yeah,
- 20:35Speaker 2: and they gave this huge magnet that said Twisters on
- 20:39Speaker 2: it and it had like a tornado on there, and
- 20:42Speaker 2: he put it on his on the floor in front
- 20:46Speaker 2: of him and he was trying to adjust, but that
- 20:50Speaker 2: magnet was slippery. I guess I planted on the magnet
- 20:55Speaker 2: and boom, and he kicked the seat in front of
- 20:58Speaker 2: him so hard. Dude so bad. It scared me. I
- 21:04Speaker 2: was next to him and just watch this dude, like,
- 21:08Speaker 2: whoa the middle of the movie must have scared the
- 21:11Speaker 2: hell that poor guy. Oh, I mean, it was just like,
- 21:14Speaker 2: I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry.
- 21:16Speaker 3: I didn't mean it was unbelievable, and he was super
- 21:21Speaker 3: cool about it.
- 21:23Speaker 5: Did you explain like the magnet, sir?
- 21:25Speaker 2: You couldn't. You couldn't.
- 21:26Speaker 3: It was in the middle, it was like early in
- 21:28Speaker 3: the movie. But I was like I did, like I
- 21:31Speaker 3: tapped him on the shoulder and.
- 21:32Speaker 2: I was like, dude, I'm so sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry,
- 21:35Speaker 2: And then afterward I was like, I'm so sorry I slipped,
- 21:39Speaker 2: and he was like I thought I was dying. I
- 21:41Speaker 2: didn't know, but he was great. I laughed so hard,
- 21:44Speaker 2: and then I would just like think about it later
- 21:49Speaker 2: in the movie and just start laughing so hard.
- 21:52Speaker 5: Oh God, it's too bad.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Metal better magnetized. That would have helped me.
- 22:00Speaker 3: But like these little these tiny little legs that have
- 22:03Speaker 3: to haul around this big body, they have some power
- 22:05Speaker 3: in them, you know, And I really really he did.
- 22:10Speaker 5: He did.
- 22:11Speaker 2: So consider yourself lucky. The dude was just shozaming stuff.
- 22:14Speaker 2: He could have kicked. He didn't do that, which is good.
- 22:20Speaker 3: And you know you kick a seat like that, all
- 22:22Speaker 3: of a sudden someone falls over, They get concussed. They're
- 22:24Speaker 3: in Lola land, you know. I mean, it's really.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Look at you with the segways. I love this guy.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Come on, guys, should we get it right into it?
- 22:33Speaker 3: Should we start talking this movie? Should we get should
- 22:36Speaker 3: we get right into it? After I went on a
- 22:37Speaker 3: ten minutes ago? So should we now get right?
- 22:41Speaker 2: Is what I should say? Yes we should rob Will
- 22:44Speaker 2: you hit us with a rough synopsies? Yes. Sebastian and
- 22:49Speaker 2: Mia are drawn together by their common desire to do
- 22:52Speaker 2: what they love, but as success mounts, they are faced
- 22:56Speaker 2: with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of
- 23:00Speaker 2: their love affair and the dreams they worked so hard
- 23:03Speaker 2: to maintain in each other. Threatened to rip them apart,
- 23:08Speaker 2: pray the fragile fabric of their love affair. Nice have fun? Yeah,
- 23:13Speaker 2: that's great, great read? Thank you read. Did you start
- 23:17Speaker 2: laughing because you thought about me kicking? This season? I
- 23:23Speaker 2: wish that was why? Yes? Okay, okay, okay, I like it.
- 23:26Speaker 5: I like it.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Let's go for rotten to models in here what they
- 23:28Speaker 2: have to say. Critics have this coming in at a
- 23:30Speaker 2: pretty solid ninety one percent.
- 23:34Speaker 3: That is that's fresh, bro pretty good, pretty fresh. I
- 23:37Speaker 3: was a little surprised by this one. Audience members have
- 23:39Speaker 3: it at eighty two percent. It's quite a bit lower.
- 23:43Speaker 2: It is. Some people really just if they hear it's
- 23:46Speaker 2: a musical, they say, nope, I'm immediately out. I know
- 23:51Speaker 2: a frequent guest on the pod, Adam Chance, is that
- 23:55Speaker 2: way yeah, and he was like, you know, after that
- 23:59Speaker 2: open highway scene, I was pretty much He's like, I'm
- 24:03Speaker 2: glad I stuck around. Pretty good plot, but that almost
- 24:07Speaker 2: that almost ruined.
- 24:08Speaker 5: It for me.
- 24:08Speaker 2: It's immediately yeah, that was pretty.
- 24:12Speaker 5: Wild, and it's by far the biggest and like it's
- 24:16Speaker 5: it's not totally even with the rest of the movie.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's a musical number, yeah, big time. Yeah,
- 24:25Speaker 2: that is interesting. Well let's go in in here. What
- 24:27Speaker 2: we think it's time for our that's a hot take.
- 24:34Speaker 2: That's a hot take. I burnt the thing at the dinner,
- 24:39Speaker 2: the surprise dinner souple. I couldn't tell what it was
- 24:45Speaker 2: supposed to be. It looked heavy, yes, heavy, heavy soul.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Definitely not tapass more Sampa than topas I can start
- 24:57Speaker 3: on this one. I like this movie a lot. This
- 25:01Speaker 3: movie will always be tied a little bit to the
- 25:04Speaker 3: controversy from the Oscars. In my brain of course, right
- 25:08Speaker 3: like they read the wrong movie. It was a whole thing.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Moonlight ended up winning, right, that was the correct movie.
- 25:15Speaker 2: It was.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Just super awkward. If anyone has ever seen Ryan Gosling's
- 25:22Speaker 3: reaction to all that, it's really funny because he's just like, Oh,
- 25:27Speaker 3: I don't know what's happening right now, because they were
- 25:30Speaker 3: all on stage.
- 25:31Speaker 2: It was very awkward. They thought they won.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Weirdness, But this movie I think is super super charming.
- 25:38Speaker 3: I do love a musical, so that wasn't, you know,
- 25:41Speaker 3: a hurdle I had to personally get over. But it's
- 25:46Speaker 3: not like the most musically musical of all time either.
- 25:51Speaker 3: There's a few spots in there. But I just think
- 25:54Speaker 3: the acting in this of the two leads is tremendous.
- 25:58Speaker 3: They're both just so so good. They have great chemistry.
- 26:02Speaker 3: They've been in a ton of movies together, which I
- 26:04Speaker 3: kind of didn't realize till I was looking through their filmographies.
- 26:07Speaker 2: This last time really fun. I loved the one thing
- 26:13Speaker 2: that stuck out to me that I that felt kind.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Of freshish at the time. I don't know if it
- 26:18Speaker 3: was the first to do it, but they did it
- 26:19Speaker 3: really effectively. The like spotlight effect that they did where
- 26:23Speaker 3: they would have all the other lights around them dim
- 26:26Speaker 3: and then the.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Spotlight would come up on them.
- 26:28Speaker 3: I thought that was such a cool like bring us
- 26:31Speaker 3: into their world, you know, kind of cue. I just
- 26:35Speaker 3: really liked that well.
- 26:36Speaker 2: And it felt it felt like almost like a theater
- 26:39Speaker 2: like stagey. Yeah, exactly right. Yes, it didn't feel edited.
- 26:43Speaker 2: It felt like they were doing it with like natural lighting.
- 26:46Speaker 3: And yeah, I really liked that. The you know, the
- 26:50Speaker 3: singing and the dancing were great. I think the dancing
- 26:54Speaker 3: was probably better than the singing. Actually, that was one
- 26:58Speaker 3: of my hot takes was this might be the musical
- 27:01Speaker 3: I like the most that just doesn't have very strong
- 27:04Speaker 3: singing in it.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Take and I hate you, damn. I'm sorry.
- 27:09Speaker 3: I mean, they're not bad, that's not what I mean.
- 27:11Speaker 3: But it's not like Jennifer Hudson, you know what I mean.
- 27:17Speaker 3: And you know Cynthia Rebo or you know, like they're
- 27:20Speaker 3: just fine singers and they do a nice job. I
- 27:24Speaker 3: will say, Emma Stone's song, the audition song was way
- 27:28Speaker 3: better than I remembered it being so good for her.
- 27:31Speaker 2: That's tremendous. But yeah, I just I really love this movie.
- 27:38Speaker 3: I think it's like technically really interesting, the way they
- 27:41Speaker 3: did everything with the light and other things we'll talk about,
- 27:44Speaker 3: you know, how they shot things. It's a love letter
- 27:47Speaker 3: to La a little bit and to musical lead and
- 27:51Speaker 3: just art in general, which is fun. And I love
- 27:55Speaker 3: the the theme that I think as I get older
- 27:58Speaker 3: makes more sense to me of just like sometimes people
- 28:03Speaker 3: are in your life that are beautiful and your relationship
- 28:06Speaker 3: is beautiful and it's absolutely what you need at that point,
- 28:10Speaker 3: and then you have to go your own separate ways
- 28:13Speaker 3: and that's also wonderful, and you know it hurts, but
- 28:17Speaker 3: it's like it is just a.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Part of this life that we live.
- 28:20Speaker 3: And I think that's really effectively communicated in this film
- 28:24Speaker 3: and I really like it a lot. And my other
- 28:28Speaker 3: hot take is just, besides an absolute lack of talent,
- 28:33Speaker 3: I could never be an actor because those auditions are
- 28:37Speaker 3: the cringiest thing ever and there's no way.
- 28:40Speaker 2: I could do that over and over again, I don't
- 28:42Speaker 2: know how over and over And yeah.
- 28:46Speaker 3: I mean I do that, but in my personal life,
- 28:50Speaker 3: I mean, come on, but yeah, I just I feel
- 28:55Speaker 3: so bad in every one of those auditions scenes.
- 28:57Speaker 2: I'm just like, stop it be nice to these people.
- 29:01Speaker 2: So that's my type of take oh type it take
- 29:05Speaker 2: bro very nice.
- 29:06Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 29:07Speaker 2: I loved this movie.
- 29:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:10Speaker 2: It was nominated for fourteen Oscars. It won six for
- 29:15Speaker 2: Best Original Song for City of Stars, Best Production Design,
- 29:20Speaker 2: Original Score, Cinematography, Best Actress for Amistone, and Best Director
- 29:26Speaker 2: for Damian Chizzelle. And like you mentioned, it almost won
- 29:29Speaker 2: Best Picture at least for a little while. Yeah, man,
- 29:33Speaker 2: that was awkward. Yeap, what are the the old old
- 29:36Speaker 2: Hollywood couple? That was yeah, yeah, yeah, the old Bonnie.
- 29:42Speaker 5: And clor baby. But then he hated he punted it
- 29:46Speaker 5: dunaway and she.
- 29:48Speaker 2: She was like, you take it. I'm out.
- 29:51Speaker 6: This is on words ulland yep, boy, I was surprised
- 29:57Speaker 6: to see, you know, with that many OSCAR noms, it's
- 30:00Speaker 6: not on the IMDb Top two fifty.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Surprises me. That is surprising. It was. It was written
- 30:07Speaker 2: and directed by Damien Chazelle. This is the second film
- 30:10Speaker 2: of his that we've done an episode on, the first
- 30:13Speaker 2: being Whiplash. His first two films man. He really came
- 30:16Speaker 2: out of the gate strong. He's got some great films
- 30:18Speaker 2: in his filmography. Overall. Yeah, the music throughout the entire
- 30:23Speaker 2: film is fantastic. It definitely deserved Oscars. The cinematography was
- 30:30Speaker 2: so impressive. I keep seeing the clip online where they're
- 30:34Speaker 2: at the jazz club and Ryan Gosling is playing the
- 30:37Speaker 2: piano and Emma Stone is dancing and the camera operator
- 30:40Speaker 2: is doing the quick pan overall that is like he's
- 30:45Speaker 2: really panning over Yes, and cool. He Damien Chazzelle is
- 30:52Speaker 2: behind him, tapping him when he wants to do it. Oh,
- 30:55Speaker 2: that's cool. It is insane that that was not just
- 30:59Speaker 2: like edited to look painshot. Wo. So that blew my mind.
- 31:03Speaker 2: But there are just so many one takes in this
- 31:07Speaker 2: and I am such a huge sucker for one takes.
- 31:10Speaker 2: I love them.
- 31:12Speaker 3: That's a long scene to a long scene.
- 31:17Speaker 2: That highway scene is one take and it goes for
- 31:21Speaker 2: a long time. I love those. The chemistry between Emmistone
- 31:27Speaker 2: and Ryan Gosling is awesome. It makes the movie. I
- 31:31Speaker 2: have the same take as you. The singing in this
- 31:34Speaker 2: movie is subpar. It's not great until we get John
- 31:37Speaker 2: Legend in there. Yes, but the fact that I love
- 31:41Speaker 2: this musical and I don't care for either of the
- 31:44Speaker 2: main voices just shows how well the movie's made, from
- 31:47Speaker 2: the script, the directing, to the cinematography, into the music.
- 31:52Speaker 2: My hot take maybe the saddest happy ending ever. Oh sorry,
- 31:59Speaker 2: I went I went dirty in my mind. I'm sorry.
- 32:06Speaker 2: I just instantly I couldn't stop this. Okay, So don't
- 32:12Speaker 2: think that. Why do you think? Tell me more? I mean,
- 32:16Speaker 2: it's obviously they both are living their dream, so it
- 32:19Speaker 2: is y it is, but you we just had this
- 32:24Speaker 2: amazing flashback of what life could be for them, and yeah,
- 32:29Speaker 2: he would be in another club looking at somebody else,
- 32:34Speaker 2: you know, living his dream. But he looked he still
- 32:37Speaker 2: looked so happy with her being with her. That is
- 32:41Speaker 2: just like it just makes it just tears my heart
- 32:44Speaker 2: out at the same time, I agree with that for sure.
- 32:47Speaker 2: So that is what I mean by that.
- 32:49Speaker 3: Can I interrupt once again and just say, when this
- 32:54Speaker 3: movie came out, someone said, do you think that was
- 32:57Speaker 3: a dream at the end to me?
- 32:59Speaker 2: And I was like, what are you doing when you're
- 33:02Speaker 2: watching a film? Because I don't and.
- 33:04Speaker 3: I don't remember who asked me, but they were like
- 33:07Speaker 3: they thought it was like, a you could interpret did
- 33:10Speaker 3: this actually happen?
- 33:11Speaker 2: Or did it not? And I was like, what the
- 33:13Speaker 2: hell is happening right now? That's amazing? And I was
- 33:17Speaker 2: so mad. I'm just confused. You thought it was me?
- 33:21Speaker 2: You thought it was me? That's no, I did not
- 33:23Speaker 2: think it was you.
- 33:25Speaker 3: I'm the one asking you dumb questions like that, not
- 33:28Speaker 3: the other way around.
- 33:29Speaker 2: But I was like, I don't you just watch it
- 33:32Speaker 2: with like fingers in your ears and your eyes closed
- 33:35Speaker 2: like and I.
- 33:38Speaker 3: And the only reason I bring it up is because
- 33:40Speaker 3: this time when I because I think this is only
- 33:42Speaker 3: the second time I've ever seen it, or since that
- 33:45Speaker 3: comment was made, it was the first time I've seen it.
- 33:47Speaker 3: And I was just like, how the hell can you
- 33:49Speaker 3: think that based on what we see in this movie?
- 33:52Speaker 2: It doesn't make a lick of sense. No, it doesn't.
- 33:58Speaker 2: I don't.
- 33:59Speaker 5: I can't. It's right up there with the top spinning
- 34:03Speaker 5: and incept.
- 34:07Speaker 2: What if it was you, Tom? What if your whole
- 34:08Speaker 2: friend was like.
- 34:11Speaker 5: Care my whole.
- 34:15Speaker 2: I won't be participating today, thank.
- 34:17Speaker 5: You, except the flashback, which was actually what happened.
- 34:25Speaker 2: Yes, I love it. No, if I definitely agree with you,
- 34:30Speaker 2: that is the yes. Yes, exactly with you. I'm sorry
- 34:37Speaker 2: I went dirty on you. I don't know why I
- 34:40Speaker 2: didn't think of that I should have.
- 34:47Speaker 5: I love it. I love this movie. I actually sat
- 34:49Speaker 5: down to night it's going to start watching it. Any
- 34:51Speaker 5: time I do is I worry that I'm not going
- 34:53Speaker 5: to watch the movie in time to record, so I
- 34:56Speaker 5: start two days earlier and life. Even though it's not
- 34:59Speaker 5: the best way to watch a movie, I tend to
- 35:01Speaker 5: split a movie up.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Sometimes. Yeah.
- 35:04Speaker 5: I turned it on tonight's ago and I was just
- 35:06Speaker 5: waiting for an easy off ramp to posit and resume,
- 35:09Speaker 5: and it just never came. And it's not like this
- 35:12Speaker 5: movie is like fast paced or that it's coming at you,
- 35:15Speaker 5: but it's just it's so intentionally paced, and it's so
- 35:18Speaker 5: intimate and it just sucks you in and there just
- 35:20Speaker 5: isn't a good place to stop watching it. So I
- 35:22Speaker 5: watched this straight through. It's a beautifully shot, like you said,
- 35:27Speaker 5: the color is amazing, like it's so vibrant. It's just
- 35:31Speaker 5: so perfectly envisioned. I love musicals too, which helps. And
- 35:37Speaker 5: one thing I love about musicals is seeing how they
- 35:39Speaker 5: frame it because there's there's world building right like you
- 35:41Speaker 5: have to create a world in which people can break
- 35:45Speaker 5: out into song and dance and it fits in the movie.
- 35:48Speaker 5: And then there's also, yeah, if it's a you know,
- 35:50Speaker 5: probably more so if it's adapted from a screen or
- 35:54Speaker 5: from a stage musical. But even for an original screen,
- 35:57Speaker 5: there was a lot of scenes in here where you
- 35:59Speaker 5: just felt like the the stage presence and you felt
- 36:01Speaker 5: like you were watching a musical in a theater with
- 36:04Speaker 5: the spotlights and with the real close shots and the
- 36:07Speaker 5: kind of minimal set design and just the two two
- 36:09Speaker 5: actors going back and forth. It's such a good movie.
- 36:13Speaker 5: I'll say my hot take. I'm gonna inverse yours. I'll
- 36:16Speaker 5: say the happiest sad ending because but yeah, he starts
- 36:24Speaker 5: playing the song, and I like it kind of recalls
- 36:27Speaker 5: earlier in the movie. He's talking about how jazz is,
- 36:30Speaker 5: uh what is it? It's conflict and it's compromise, and it's
- 36:36Speaker 5: just it's new every time, it's brand new every night.
- 36:38Speaker 5: It's very very exciting.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Very very exciting. Such a.
- 36:44Speaker 5: Yeah, but I like the flashback being you know, life
- 36:48Speaker 5: is like jazz, that it it can change, you know,
- 36:52Speaker 5: these these brief moments. If he doesn't brush her off,
- 36:54Speaker 5: that first meeting, and if he does kiss her, the
- 36:57Speaker 5: whole path is different. And if if they lived these
- 36:59Speaker 5: life a hundred times, they'd still be drawing together kind
- 37:02Speaker 5: of like you were saying, like these two people were
- 37:04Speaker 5: meant for each other and their story could have been
- 37:06Speaker 5: told a million different ways and they'll be interesting. And
- 37:09Speaker 5: you know, we saw two of them, one and fall
- 37:12Speaker 5: and one one briefly. So yeah, I love the movie,
- 37:17Speaker 5: really fun to watch again.
- 37:19Speaker 2: That's awesome. Do you think it was a dream that
- 37:21Speaker 2: he was having?
- 37:24Speaker 5: So yeah, I just don't know.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, who can how can we know? How
- 37:31Speaker 2: can we other than all the well yeah, yeah, whoever
- 37:37Speaker 2: that was that made that comment, I'm so sorry. I'm
- 37:39Speaker 2: not making fun of you. I'm not sorry.
- 37:40Speaker 5: That was really angry about it.
- 37:44Speaker 2: I know, I really don't remember who said it. It
- 37:46Speaker 2: might have been like online or something.
- 37:49Speaker 5: I don't think I'm gonna google this. Well, you guys talk.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Oh okay, but that was a hot take, buddy nice.
- 37:59Speaker 2: I think we should go to the next segment here
- 38:01Speaker 2: and talk about our favorite acting performance, and let's choose
- 38:05Speaker 2: the dude. The dude. I'm the dude, so that's what
- 38:10Speaker 2: you call me.
- 38:10Speaker 5: You know that or his dudeness or duder or you know,
- 38:16Speaker 5: el dudo a reno.
- 38:18Speaker 2: If you're not into the whole brevity, you're still looking
- 38:20Speaker 2: things up.
- 38:20Speaker 5: To me, No, I can go. Yeah, made me go
- 38:23Speaker 5: last for the hot takes.
- 38:24Speaker 2: So so let's do it. Start it off.
- 38:28Speaker 5: Okay, I have fun news for my Google search, but
- 38:30Speaker 5: I'll bring it up later. So this movie feels like
- 38:33Speaker 5: both stories of the two main characters are very similar
- 38:36Speaker 5: right where they're struggling in their careers, trying to make
- 38:39Speaker 5: ends of meet and then they they do this thing
- 38:42Speaker 5: in the middle of the movie that kind of takes
- 38:44Speaker 5: them a little bit of course, and then in the
- 38:47Speaker 5: end they end up, you know, achieving their quote unquote dreams.
- 38:51Speaker 5: But it feels like this movie is much more preferential
- 38:54Speaker 5: to Sebastian's dream and jazz music, Like it paints jazz
- 38:57Speaker 5: and that's really bright light. And you know, when he
- 39:01Speaker 5: sells out, she judges him, he judges himself, and we're
- 39:04Speaker 5: meant to judge him a little that he joins the
- 39:06Speaker 5: John Legend band. But when she auditions for Dangerous Minds
- 39:10Speaker 5: and meets the OC, like we're all happy for her
- 39:12Speaker 5: and excited like it it just treats jazz at a
- 39:15Speaker 5: higher level. So I feel like everything is set up
- 39:17Speaker 5: for Gosling to take this movie. But Emmason's just so
- 39:21Speaker 5: goddamn good in it that she owns every scene she's
- 39:24Speaker 5: in and you can't, you can't take it away. Like
- 39:27Speaker 5: every scene she's in is amazing. I could randomly turn
- 39:31Speaker 5: on the movie and she's been you know, most of
- 39:32Speaker 5: the movie, like they both are, and just break apart
- 39:36Speaker 5: this scene she's in and how great she's doing, and
- 39:39Speaker 5: how she's acting without saying things, and how her eyes
- 39:42Speaker 5: swell up at the right moment, and how she does
- 39:44Speaker 5: that little smirk smile like she does. She's so good
- 39:47Speaker 5: in this movie. It's it's unbelievable. It's very deserving of
- 39:50Speaker 5: the Best Actress award, probably our best like in their
- 39:57Speaker 5: prime actress right now, Like I can't.
- 40:00Speaker 2: That's a hot take. It's a hot tag. It's also
- 40:02Speaker 2: probably true. Yeah, I mean she.
- 40:04Speaker 5: Keeps having hardware. Yeah, she gets nominated for everything she does.
- 40:08Speaker 5: She takes sound or roles that requires something of her
- 40:11Speaker 5: and requires something different.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Weird movies, bro, Yeah, they're so weird. I love them.
- 40:15Speaker 2: She's got to get away from Yargo.
- 40:18Speaker 5: Normal against I wouldn't mind to just a maz come again.
- 40:23Speaker 5: But yeah, she's still good in this movie. Like it's
- 40:27Speaker 5: it's to me, she's undeniable, there's no question.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I like that a lot. And initially I thought
- 40:36Speaker 2: this was just going to be kind of a coin
- 40:37Speaker 2: flip because I knew it was between these two main
- 40:42Speaker 2: actress because there's really not a lot going on supporting wise.
- 40:47Speaker 2: But yeah, I agree, she completely crushed it. The reason
- 40:51Speaker 2: why she gets it over him, he just never has
- 40:54Speaker 2: that like audition scene kind of moment and that's definitely
- 40:58Speaker 2: what put it over the edge for me. But like
- 41:01Speaker 2: you had said, you know, she just crushes all the scenes.
- 41:04Speaker 2: She like wells up at all the right times. That
- 41:06Speaker 2: first audition that we see her in where she gets
- 41:09Speaker 2: completely into this scene and is then taken out of
- 41:12Speaker 2: it from someone who walks in and kind of ruins it,
- 41:15Speaker 2: but like she was so in it. Yeah, Like I
- 41:19Speaker 2: was like, well, now you can like see her just
- 41:21Speaker 2: like get in this and then you see her like
- 41:25Speaker 2: trying to stay in it, but is also just like,
- 41:28Speaker 2: I can't believe this person is ruining this for me.
- 41:31Speaker 2: At the same time, do I do I keep doing it?
- 41:33Speaker 2: You could see all that just from her face. It
- 41:37Speaker 2: was insane. Yeah, she's extremely impressive. Yeah.
- 41:42Speaker 3: It made me think of the audition scene in the
- 41:44Speaker 3: last five years when she's like, should I sing louder?
- 41:46Speaker 2: I'll sing louder.
- 41:47Speaker 3: Louder like the director looking at his crotch. Yeah, BLT
- 41:52Speaker 3: dirty shoes. Yeah, just so so great. Yeah, it's a
- 41:57Speaker 3: clean sweep. I was a little surprised. I thought I
- 42:00Speaker 3: would be more of a coin flip as well. And
- 42:02Speaker 3: Gossling is tremendous, you know. I think he's always really great,
- 42:05Speaker 3: and I don't think any of us are not saying
- 42:07Speaker 3: that for sure, But she's I don't know, she's wonderful
- 42:13Speaker 3: in this movie.
- 42:15Speaker 2: And just the way.
- 42:17Speaker 3: And I think the difference between them is like he
- 42:20Speaker 3: has this dream but he is getting work, where she
- 42:24Speaker 3: has this dream but she's not broken through it all yet.
- 42:27Speaker 3: And it's sort of also just the difference between musicians
- 42:30Speaker 3: and actors in general and the like that how.
- 42:33Speaker 2: Those things work for them. But man, she's for all
- 42:38Speaker 2: the reasons you.
- 42:39Speaker 3: Guys said she's she's just exceptionally great in this Like
- 42:43Speaker 3: she gets her heart broken, she gets not both by
- 42:46Speaker 3: him and by the world and by this thing she
- 42:50Speaker 3: loves that you know, isn't loving her back in that moment.
- 42:53Speaker 3: She's obviously and maybe again this is getting older, But
- 42:58Speaker 3: I think about all these folks put all they have
- 43:01Speaker 3: into these things, whether it's music or acting or art
- 43:05Speaker 3: in general, and like they don't ever break through. And
- 43:09Speaker 3: it's just like, how many crazy talented people are out
- 43:12Speaker 3: there that just haven't heard that one?
- 43:14Speaker 2: Yes, you know what I mean, that.
- 43:16Speaker 3: That was needed or whatever happened, because timing can be
- 43:19Speaker 3: so random. But yeah, I think she's just incredible in
- 43:23Speaker 3: this movie.
- 43:25Speaker 2: And like we said up top.
- 43:26Speaker 3: Like not an amazing singing voice by any means, but
- 43:30Speaker 3: the fact that I don't really care about that while
- 43:33Speaker 3: I'm watching it is kind of a testament to how
- 43:36Speaker 3: great she is at everything else, you know what I mean,
- 43:38Speaker 3: Like it's.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Just, yeah, it's incredible.
- 43:41Speaker 5: I'm clearly not a great teller of who has a
- 43:44Speaker 5: good voice or next. I mean, I don't think they
- 43:46Speaker 5: sound like make a wubla, but I don't think they
- 43:49Speaker 5: sound great.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Yeah. I think that was annoying to me throughout the
- 43:54Speaker 2: entire movie, is that they're just so unsupported and mousey. Yeah,
- 44:00Speaker 2: it's like like just like barely putting any vocal on
- 44:04Speaker 2: it where you can be useful in some scenes, right
- 44:07Speaker 2: or something, and it and it it ended up being
- 44:10Speaker 2: really effective because then when she actually was supported and
- 44:14Speaker 2: faulting in the audition, then you're like, whoa, she's like
- 44:17Speaker 2: really doing it is her moment, yeah, and you're like, okay,
- 44:21Speaker 2: I'm in it. Yeah. But all the other times, just like, oh,
- 44:24Speaker 2: I just wish I could like hear you like really sing,
- 44:27Speaker 2: just let it, let it loose, like go go for it. Yeah,
- 44:31Speaker 2: but you do get that moment. You never get that
- 44:33Speaker 2: from him, and I don't think he's that strong.
- 44:36Speaker 5: Well, right, she is a better overall singer than he
- 44:39Speaker 5: is to say, okay.
- 44:41Speaker 2: It seems that way for sure.
- 44:44Speaker 5: Which a lot of his singing is more in the
- 44:48Speaker 5: like actual you know, classical musical sense where it's exposition
- 44:52Speaker 5: and like he doesn't have a lot of like performances
- 44:56Speaker 5: that are supposed to be showsnappers, and it's more just
- 45:00Speaker 5: singing what he's.
- 45:02Speaker 2: He's kind of like singing to himself, like you know,
- 45:04Speaker 2: down the pier doing the City of Stars and just
- 45:07Speaker 2: kind of introspective and stuff. It's not like showy at all.
- 45:11Speaker 2: And yeah, it was fine, but it just wasn't like, yeah, yeah, sweet,
- 45:17Speaker 2: we got some singing. Oh yeah yeah, but she's the dude.
- 45:23Speaker 2: She's the dude. She's definitely the dude. Well, let's move
- 45:25Speaker 2: on to some of these supporting characters. Let's go and
- 45:27Speaker 2: pick the Tuccia I guess.
- 45:34Speaker 5: Yeah, well we're allowed just to go with the other leader. Right.
- 45:38Speaker 5: This is absolutely tohand or like and there's there's almost
- 45:42Speaker 5: nobody else of any consequence in this movie.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it's pretty wild.
- 45:46Speaker 5: It's it's such a and that's what another thing that's
- 45:49Speaker 5: so amazing about it is despite how big it opens with,
- 45:52Speaker 5: you know, this giant freeway scene with thirty singers, and
- 45:55Speaker 5: then even the first scene of the movie with her
- 45:57Speaker 5: in her roommates ends up being this big scene, but
- 46:01Speaker 5: after that it's really contained and small and just these
- 46:04Speaker 5: two acting which I you know, make this movie a
- 46:09Speaker 5: thousand times again, and going with two actors versus two
- 46:12Speaker 5: singers is the right choice one hundred percent of the
- 46:14Speaker 5: time because of how how this movie is framed. But yeah,
- 46:18Speaker 5: gost Thing's great in it. He does everything he's asked
- 46:20Speaker 5: to do. He doesn't have I think as much as stake.
- 46:24Speaker 5: Like you said, you get the sense that if he
- 46:27Speaker 5: doesn't get in the club, but he has a piano
- 46:29Speaker 5: and a standing gig someplace that he'd probably be pretty
- 46:31Speaker 5: happy and largely okay with that, Like he's not going
- 46:35Speaker 5: home at any point if he doesn't, you know, hit
- 46:37Speaker 5: it big. He's positive, he's funny, like some some of
- 46:42Speaker 5: the best gostling is when he's you know what, he's
- 46:45Speaker 5: interacting with JK. Simmons at the Studs, just that scene.
- 46:52Speaker 5: That's he's funny and he's timing so good. I'd love
- 46:57Speaker 5: to see him do more comedy, which I think he
- 46:59Speaker 5: kind of sprinkles into all his roles. But absolutely he's great,
- 47:03Speaker 5: and he kind of he serves as that muse or
- 47:08Speaker 5: that person for him, a Stone's character to help her
- 47:11Speaker 5: get to be where she needs to be.
- 47:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean she wouldn't have got there at all
- 47:16Speaker 2: if it wasn't for him at all. Yeah, Yeah, that's great.
- 47:20Speaker 2: I would totally agree with all that, And we said
- 47:23Speaker 2: it earlier, but I just love how big of a
- 47:25Speaker 2: nerd he is and how much he loved was just
- 47:28Speaker 2: unapologetic about it, very very very exciting.
- 47:33Speaker 5: If I told you Miles Davis Pete on this rug,
- 47:35Speaker 5: would you like it. That's almost insulting.
- 47:38Speaker 2: Did he did he right? Well, like they say, people
- 47:42Speaker 2: love what other people are passionate about, and it's.
- 47:45Speaker 5: A great line. You're stepping ahead, but you're.
- 47:49Speaker 2: But yeah, it makes sense there. Yeah, he didn't do
- 47:54Speaker 2: anything wrong in this. But one thing that I hate
- 47:56Speaker 2: in this movie is just because it's kind of the
- 48:00Speaker 2: impetus for them kind of falling apart, is that he
- 48:03Speaker 2: just overhears her talking to her mom explaining what he's
- 48:08Speaker 2: doing and what his dreams are and stuff, and he
- 48:11Speaker 2: just kind of infers that She's like he needs to
- 48:15Speaker 2: start getting his act together, he needs to make some money,
- 48:18Speaker 2: he needs to do but like she didn't want him
- 48:20Speaker 2: to do that, like no, talk to I don't know. Yeah,
- 48:24Speaker 2: all we had to do. All we had to do
- 48:26Speaker 2: is have a conversation, and then you wouldn't have taken
- 48:30Speaker 2: that gig, you wouldn't have drifted apart. You still could
- 48:33Speaker 2: have been on the way to your dream as well.
- 48:37Speaker 2: And I hate things like that so much when it's
- 48:40Speaker 2: just as simple, we could have just talked this out.
- 48:43Speaker 5: And for that character, it's wildly out of character, Like
- 48:46Speaker 5: that's that's not him. He's like the last person that
- 48:49Speaker 5: would sell out, even if it means savingly. You know,
- 48:54Speaker 5: it really feels like there's twenty minutes cut from the
- 48:56Speaker 5: movie and it's cut in there between. And it interesting
- 49:00Speaker 5: that between meeting Legend and him joining the walking in
- 49:04Speaker 5: and signing up with the band, and they condensed it
- 49:07Speaker 5: down to him over here in the conversation and looking
- 49:10Speaker 5: at a ceiling with water damage, and that was meant
- 49:13Speaker 5: to be enough to convince us. Oh yeah, he realized
- 49:16Speaker 5: he had to sell out. Yeah, sure, but it is
- 49:20Speaker 5: out of character for him, and it did. That's that's
- 49:25Speaker 5: my least favorite part of the movie, that whole I
- 49:27Speaker 5: hate it, and mine is.
- 49:28Speaker 2: More just because of you know, just you could have
- 49:31Speaker 2: communicated it better, but it also is showing just how
- 49:36Speaker 2: he's willing to do that for her.
- 49:38Speaker 3: He loves you that much, you know, it's showing us
- 49:40Speaker 3: that but good intent, but yeah, the wrong path or whatever, And.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Like that's my least favorite part as well. Here, what
- 49:48Speaker 2: do you got? Bukes? J K. Simmons, who we mentioned.
- 49:53Speaker 2: It's incredible. We're on the Tucci still right, yeah, oh yeah,
- 49:56Speaker 2: we're still there.
- 49:57Speaker 5: Were talking about Simmons your winner, No.
- 50:01Speaker 2: It would have been Brian Gosling for sure. Whoever's not
- 50:04Speaker 2: the dude?
- 50:05Speaker 3: Well, like like we said earlier, who even John Legend?
- 50:10Speaker 3: Is he the next biggest part in this movie? Yeah,
- 50:15Speaker 3: I guess that's her name.
- 50:18Speaker 2: A lot of lines after that first one, just for
- 50:21Speaker 2: that kind of opening, but yeah, what is her name?
- 50:24Speaker 5: Her scene?
- 50:28Speaker 2: I did like her.
- 50:29Speaker 3: I thought she was great, especially they had a really
- 50:31Speaker 3: fun like back and forth in that first scene.
- 50:33Speaker 5: But great, Yeah, we don't really see.
- 50:37Speaker 2: Anymore of her, but yeah, it's kind of an interesting movie.
- 50:40Speaker 2: It is.
- 50:40Speaker 3: Definitely it's a two hander, real, you know, real close
- 50:44Speaker 3: to that for sure. But yeah, it's always fun seeing JK.
- 50:48Speaker 2: Simmons. He's just oh he's so good dude, you love him.
- 50:52Speaker 2: And it was fun seeing Tom Evert's got in just
- 50:55Speaker 2: the smallest role ever.
- 50:58Speaker 5: Not not an insignifican your role, because that role is
- 51:01Speaker 5: set up for failure here with that guy energy, which
- 51:04Speaker 5: is like you were dating grand Gossling who still loves
- 51:08Speaker 5: you and you're with that almost aid the actor. It
- 51:12Speaker 5: doesn't work, but he like he plays it so straight. Yeah,
- 51:15Speaker 5: he's like he seems like a loving husband, a loving dad.
- 51:17Speaker 5: She wants to get off the highway and just go
- 51:19Speaker 5: eat sure, honey, yeah, like super complicated. It's like I
- 51:24Speaker 5: see it. I love it. It makes sense.
- 51:26Speaker 2: So handsome.
- 51:27Speaker 5: Oh he's yeah, it looks great.
- 51:28Speaker 2: I mean super dreamy. He's a great drummer.
- 51:33Speaker 5: Loves jazz, that's true.
- 51:34Speaker 2: We know that she's got a real thing for jazz people, she.
- 51:37Speaker 5: Really does, and she hates jazz. Yeah, we're used to
- 51:41Speaker 5: used to Kenny g.
- 51:45Speaker 2: What. Yeah, well sweet, let's keep on going. Let's go
- 51:52Speaker 2: and pick our favorite scene, and let's choose the Dingus.
- 51:58Speaker 5: So because he's quite simple, really Ingus Gingus.
- 52:02Speaker 2: I can talk about my dingas all night long.
- 52:05Speaker 5: This one me first again.
- 52:07Speaker 2: Yeah, oh heck yeah.
- 52:10Speaker 5: My very few notes in this category. This movie is
- 52:14Speaker 5: perfect all the way up through a Lovely Night, which
- 52:17Speaker 5: is my favorite scene. And it's a perfect, like forty
- 52:20Speaker 5: minutes of film that you're gonna.
- 52:22Speaker 2: Say it was bad or something then.
- 52:23Speaker 5: No, no, no, it's fine. But it's it's not complicated.
- 52:28Speaker 5: You get really the best part of the musical. Rob
- 52:30Speaker 5: you said it when you were talking about your out take,
- 52:32Speaker 5: like or what of you did. It's not a traditional musical.
- 52:35Speaker 5: It's not tied to like you know, we've gone four
- 52:38Speaker 5: minutes without a musical number we got to get back
- 52:40Speaker 5: in like right, but for the first forty minutes, and
- 52:43Speaker 5: it is very much a musical and you get music
- 52:46Speaker 5: in every other scene and it's a great exposition. And
- 52:50Speaker 5: that scene where they're you know, over the twilight of
- 52:53Speaker 5: la with the bench, I love butch dance. It's the
- 52:57Speaker 5: best dance number in the movie. I think, yeah, agreed,
- 53:01Speaker 5: observatory and people might like that more, but I like
- 53:04Speaker 5: that this is more grounded and more singing. It's evokes
- 53:07Speaker 5: singing the rain aggressively, which is great. I love that
- 53:12Speaker 5: scene like that, and just like the conversation, uh like
- 53:16Speaker 5: the bit like well you might get cancer, but you
- 53:19Speaker 5: get to where you're going faster, so it bounces out yeah.
- 53:22Speaker 5: And then it ends the scene with him walking all
- 53:25Speaker 5: the way back to where he started, and it kind
- 53:28Speaker 5: of like a great exposition on his character, like he
- 53:31Speaker 5: even though he was playing like you know, it's too bad,
- 53:33Speaker 5: I'm here with you. This would be great with anybody else,
- 53:37Speaker 5: but he clearly is into her because he just walked
- 53:41Speaker 5: to be with her, and it's it's my favorite and.
- 53:46Speaker 2: That's and it's like a one take. It's so cool
- 53:50Speaker 2: and it's like the iconic scene from this film too.
- 53:53Speaker 5: The movie poster.
- 53:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's right here, that's this poster. Where
- 53:58Speaker 2: is which one one? Right here at the time? The
- 54:02Speaker 2: city into piano keys. It's piano keys, that's what.
- 54:07Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, minimum, I don't remember what that's called, but.
- 54:13Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I definitely had that way up there as well.
- 54:18Speaker 2: I would be happy choosing that. I definitely put down
- 54:23Speaker 2: the audition as well. Another very long one take which
- 54:29Speaker 2: I love. But we finally get to hear someone with
- 54:32Speaker 2: some breath support sing a song. It's just really nice.
- 54:38Speaker 2: I was just waiting for it. Thank you. But man,
- 54:43Speaker 2: she just she acts her ass off. There's the one thing.
- 54:48Speaker 2: It's the movie. The musical theater thing that I hate
- 54:51Speaker 2: is when you're singing, singing, singing, and then you say,
- 54:53Speaker 2: you say the last line of it, you don't sing it,
- 54:57Speaker 2: and she does do that, which is a huge pet
- 54:59Speaker 2: peeve of mine, but it's a big part of musical theater. Yeah,
- 55:04Speaker 2: but she just acts her ass off. She's so good.
- 55:07Speaker 2: There's trivia about that scene later.
- 55:11Speaker 3: I'll just say now she so the piano player, the
- 55:16Speaker 3: composer was playing that, and she had like an in
- 55:18Speaker 3: ear in for that scene, and they didn't plan out
- 55:22Speaker 3: what part she would sing, what parts she would speak.
- 55:24Speaker 3: She just kind of did it in the moment, And
- 55:26Speaker 3: I just.
- 55:26Speaker 2: Think that's really wildly cool that they wonder if she
- 55:30Speaker 2: switched it up at all, like if there are takes
- 55:33Speaker 2: where she started singing later. Yeah, that's an interesting question.
- 55:36Speaker 2: I don't know. Yeah, it didn't say anything about that,
- 55:39Speaker 2: so I don't know, but probably Yeah.
- 55:42Speaker 3: I thought that was neat, like what freedom to have
- 55:44Speaker 3: to own that a little bit.
- 55:46Speaker 2: Loved that.
- 55:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I would pick the overlooking la and dancing.
- 55:54Speaker 3: That scene, I think is the one I would pick.
- 55:56Speaker 3: It's the one I think of first. I love the
- 56:00Speaker 3: audition scene, Like you said, I also love the scene
- 56:04Speaker 3: where they go into Seb's and you know, they sit.
- 56:08Speaker 7: Down and when he's when he sees her and just
- 56:13Speaker 7: like all the stuff that happens right like that is
- 56:17Speaker 7: so intense and also so beautifully shot and just.
- 56:22Speaker 2: Awesome. That's what I think of when I think of
- 56:25Speaker 2: this movie. Is that dream sequence. I could see that.
- 56:30Speaker 5: Wondering like which which one is real?
- 56:34Speaker 2: Is happening?
- 56:36Speaker 5: I don't guess she goes home with him, where does
- 56:38Speaker 5: time ever?
- 56:42Speaker 3: But they just I loved that so much, so great.
- 56:48Speaker 3: We mentioned it in passing, But the Griffith observatory scene too,
- 56:52Speaker 3: is is like magical in a different way, Like that
- 56:56Speaker 3: is more like ethereal magic or something to me. And
- 57:01Speaker 3: that felt very much like you're in that that beginning
- 57:04Speaker 3: part of love, like that infatuation, you know.
- 57:07Speaker 2: They just like, I don't know, that's that's just gorgeous
- 57:12Speaker 2: as well. I love that. Yeah.
- 57:15Speaker 3: Can I tell you my least favorite scene? Oh yeah,
- 57:18Speaker 3: maybe just maybe just plot point, like dude rescheduled the
- 57:23Speaker 3: photo shoot you psycho.
- 57:26Speaker 2: Yeah, come on right, she put this thing on.
- 57:31Speaker 3: She's spending her I get it. You made a mistake.
- 57:34Speaker 3: You have to go to your bandmates and be like,
- 57:36Speaker 3: I am so sorry.
- 57:38Speaker 2: I there for this. Yeah, I gotta be out real soon,
- 57:43Speaker 2: Like shoot.
- 57:44Speaker 3: Me first, you cut a little bit of your hair
- 57:46Speaker 3: out or something, so then it's like, well, we.
- 57:48Speaker 2: Can't take pictures.
- 57:48Speaker 3: I screwed up and cut my hair off or something,
- 57:50Speaker 3: you know, like you get the hell out of that obligation.
- 57:54Speaker 2: That's insane to me. That is a very good point.
- 57:59Speaker 5: If you added to get out of a photo shoot,
- 58:01Speaker 5: you just cut some of your hair off.
- 58:07Speaker 2: He's got beautiful hair. It's important for him that he
- 58:11Speaker 2: was wearing a hat, white hat.
- 58:15Speaker 5: See I can buy that. So I think I think
- 58:18Speaker 5: interesting thing of the movie is he's a he's a hypocrite, right,
- 58:23Speaker 5: Like he talks this big game about like ah, Samba
- 58:27Speaker 5: on top of us is a stupid name for a club.
- 58:29Speaker 5: Then he wants to name his chicken on a stick
- 58:31Speaker 5: like and and he says it in the fight scene
- 58:34Speaker 5: like he this is if you're a musician, this is
- 58:38Speaker 5: kind of what you dream of, is like getting that break,
- 58:41Speaker 5: touring and being and working. And I think I think
- 58:45Speaker 5: he doesn't want to lose that, Like I think he's
- 58:47Speaker 5: into it enough. Then he knows that he's not the
- 58:50Speaker 5: main act, he's not the star of the show necessarily,
- 58:53Speaker 5: and that you can't just hey, guys, we got to
- 58:56Speaker 5: reschedule this, like that's not how life always works. And
- 58:59Speaker 5: then it comes me right off the fight too, I
- 59:01Speaker 5: think I think, yeah, he was a little on the fence.
- 59:07Speaker 3: I don't know, but also like, give us, give us
- 59:10Speaker 3: two seconds of John Legend being like this guy cannot
- 59:14Speaker 3: come a different night if we don't do this.
- 59:17Speaker 2: It's you know, like.
- 59:20Speaker 3: Because the way we see it, it's like he's just like, ah, yeah,
- 59:26Speaker 3: I guess we plan this thing that she obviously has
- 59:29Speaker 3: given me the date many you.
- 59:30Speaker 2: Know, like yeah, I just it should have been in
- 59:34Speaker 2: an event that that had more at stake. Yeah, getting
- 59:38Speaker 2: photos done showy or something a showcase.
- 59:41Speaker 5: I don't know, but.
- 59:44Speaker 3: Like, yeah, right, that's true.
- 59:49Speaker 2: That's bite your lip, okay, now put your glasses done.
- 59:53Speaker 3: Bite you If it's just a band photo shoot, they
- 59:56Speaker 3: can't start that at eleven pm after it's.
- 59:59Speaker 2: Over some many things anything, all right. I just think
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: they were low stakes. They are too low a stakes.
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: I agree, Yeah, but uh, I don't know what I'm
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: I'm happy to do a duel dingus of the and
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: then the ls I have.
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: Some super mentions. Yeah, the fight scene we've referenced a
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: handful of times. But that's like the he says, maybe
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: you just like me when I was on my ass
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: because it made you feel about you better about yourself,
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: and like her reaction reaction is the best, Like it's
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: the realist moment of the movie and it's.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: Are you kidding? And immediately wells up there was So
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: it's like that, like this will be very hard to
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: come back from, you know.
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: The things that way too though, like you can tell
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: what he says it that he's like my say, like
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: you've said things like that before where it's like like
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: why yes, oh my god.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: Because you knew I heard him right and you're in
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: that moment.
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: But yeah, And I hate the lighting of that scene
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: and I'm guessing that's intentional. Yeah, it's it's the old
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: It reminds me of like David Caruso, like Jade, Like
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: it's the one scene that's like the lighting just pisses
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: me off. And I think again, I think he's messing
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: with us there, right and like intentionally making us.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like souring probably maybe legitimately sour.
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: I don't think many people know that reference. I love that, Yes,
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: I know liked it. I did, Yeah, because I think
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: there's probably one other person that's listening.
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: Blue the movie say now at home at the end
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: when he goes out and just lays on the horn
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: and he doesn't know where she lives. He just knows
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: it's the library. And then that whole scene like that
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: pep talk is like something Gostling's really good at. It
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: is just giving like a yeah, you know, I believe
- 1:01:56Speaker 5: in you pep talk. I loved that. I love the
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: second scene of the movie. He first scene when she
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: gets home from the first edition that she killed but
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: interrupted in and then it's just her and it feels
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: like it's going to be a very normal musical where
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: she has these four friends and they party and they sing,
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: and they wear colorful dances and our dresses and do
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: choreographed dances.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: They jump into the pool and stuff.
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: That's super That looked like eight minute long, like the
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: musical number that has all these great crazy shots in it.
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: Ending with the fireworks too, from the one shot of
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: the pool jumping and then you know, I love that
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: whole sequence.
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: I did like that, that's all, and I mentioned it earlier,
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: but the fact that that cameraman was just doing that
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: like that.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: Was a really cool shot scene. But it also is
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: just it was just fun and her dancing and that
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: was fun. And we haven't even talked about like he's
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: really playing the keys, which is that? Which is so
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: cool that he's doing that. It's really neat. Yeah, but yeah,
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: I still think we should do that dance number and
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: the dream sequence. I'm in on that, all right. We
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: said quite a few of these, and I feel like
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: I didn't put that many down, But let's go to
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: the quotes and will show me the money show me?
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the one you said, and this is
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: a paraphrase, so if someone has the whole whole one
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: but people love what other people are passionate about is
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: a is a great line the start of that fight sequence,
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: and you know it starts off so sweet and gentle
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: and it just devolves so quickly devolves. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: that's my favorite. That's I've said a lot of my
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: other favorites, like you said, yeah, it's kind yeah, it's conflict,
- 1:03:59Speaker 5: it's kind of for my is and it's just it's
- 1:04:01Speaker 5: new every time. It's brand new every night. It's very
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: very exciting.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: Very very exciting, very excited.
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: My on my first watch that the two that I
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: wrote down that are my two favorite quotes and they're
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: not important at all, but one is no, Jamal you
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: be tripping.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: Oh god, no, Jamal, you be just the pregnantist of pauses.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: I love that.
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: And then my favorite welcome back sabst way to say that, Karen, Yes, yes,
- 1:04:34Speaker 5: so funny.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: God, that's good. That's good. I had a lot of
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: those too, like so you're a Barista, and I can
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: see how you could then look down on me from
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: all the way up there, Which is I liked that
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: pretty fun, just said barista. Whist always, what do you
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: mean you don't like jazz? It just means that when
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: I listened to it, I don't like it. I don't
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: know how else to explain that concept to you. I
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: like that a lot. Oh, his fight with with JK. Simmons. Yes, yeah,
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: he's like, although, you know, in this town, I thought
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: I worked on a sort of one for you, one
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: for me, basis type system. How about two for you,
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: one for me? How about all for you and none
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: for me? That's perfect? Yes?
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: Perfect?
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: Okay, a mutual decision then made by me and I
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: sign off on it. So whatever, tell yourself what you
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: want to know. Uh, I love all that. Last one
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: I'll say is I'm letting life hit me until it
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: gets tired, then I'll hit back. It's a classic ropodot.
- 1:05:48Speaker 5: I love it.
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: Yes, yes, that is great. I love that.
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: In the very first scene, which does start just hard
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: dance number, but when she's like when he hawks at
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: her and then goes around her, and he's like, what
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: the hell, because she's just not driving when traffic is
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: moving and that would make me crazy. But she's just like,
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: what is his problem? And then she's like, I should go, Really,
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: I should go. I thought that was really funny. I
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: also loved the uh it's the tail end of the JK.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: Simmons one rob that you said, but when he's just like,
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: don't don't fire me. It's Christmas and he's like, yeah,
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: I see the decorations, good luck in the New Year.
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: I thought that was really fun and.
- 1:06:39Speaker 5: Great something that's not a quote so much, but uh, yeah.
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: He lays on the horn the first time outside of
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: her apartment. Yes, and her roommate says, is that going
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: to happen every time? And her face like I think so,
- 1:06:53Speaker 5: another great Amastone moment.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: Loved it. Yeah. I always thought that that was unlike
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: him and out of character as well, like he likes
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: her so much, he would not just be outside like
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: laying on the horn. But of course we need that
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: later on in front of the library, so we But
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: like in the beginning, just like this guy sucks, what
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: got the door? What are we doing? But anyway, yeah,
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: I love that.
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: I also love after he's outside her house and lays
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: on the horn in front of the library and he's like,
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: I'm gonna be here at eight am or whatever he says,
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: and he's like there and she's not there, and he
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: just like goes to like pull away, and she stops
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: right as he's like peeling out, and she's like, good,
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: I got coffee. He's like, okay, great, okay, great, tries
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: to play it off that he.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Wasn't just gonna peel out.
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: It's pretty great. I loved that a lot, and then
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: I loved after. I think it's after the audition when
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: he just goes, you're gonna get it. I know, I know,
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: and typical gossling is us. I know these things. Thought
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: that was such a great line reading.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: I loved that those were all the ones I had though. Well,
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: I'm just I'm always going to love you. Yeah, I
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: was going to love you too, and they are they're
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: always going to love each other. Yeah, yeah, that's beautiful.
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: All right, Well, uh yeah that made me tear up.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: Let's talk about boo boo moments, crying game. I jumped
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: You're good, No, never jump my way. So I picked six.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: There could have been more, I think, Yeah, some of
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: them are just kind of drawn out too, so well,
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: we'll just see. I thought maybe the fight during the
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: surprise dinner is specifically that the thing that Timmy was
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: saying where he kind of crossed the line and she
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: immediately goes to are you kids me? And she wells up,
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: that was so good God. After he misses her huge
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: show that she's spent so much time for no reason
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: but yeah, because of a photo shoot, she says, I'm
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: going home now and he's like this is home. He's
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: like it's not anymore and she leaves. Yeah. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: The audition song scene is incredible. I think you probably
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: is that the name of that too? Yeah, well, I
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: don't know for sure, but that's definitely a lyric of it, right, yes, yes,
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: that got me. Yeah. After that and they're on that
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: bench and he's like you gotta you gotta really go
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: after this thing, and he's I'm I'm always going to
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: love you. Yeah. Absolutely, and then the flashback to when
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: when he gets fired at the restaurant and they kiss
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: as soon as she walks up to him and the
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: music gets going and.
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: He's like it's good to bad and really it started
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: even just when she sees steps made the music notes
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: and all that like, that's just.
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: Yeah, almost make eye contact.
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and his face. I mean maybe my favorite.
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: Part of his acting is when he sees her in
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: the audience then and he's just like, yeah, you know,
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: just like hit by a train almost, you know, like
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: I almost like he thought, not that he was over it,
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: because he is always going to love her, you know,
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: that situation, but he thought he was maybe farther along
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: than he was, and then all of a sudden, it
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: was just like whoa, you know, like, well we're here.
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and then yeah, after the whole sequence, then the
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: long glance at each other before she leaves.
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: With the accepting nod yeah.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and the slight smirk that they each have.
- 1:11:09Speaker 5: Right, and they both agree that the alternate ending is
- 1:11:12Speaker 5: our new truth.
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: Yes, yes, the dream is that she was with this
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: other guy. Ever, that's the dream.
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: I love that. Yes, that was what I had. Were
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: there more?
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: There was one more? Just one one more. I had
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: to read my list, but there's one get it?
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: Yeah, read my list?
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: No New Texas. Nice to read my lips?
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I got you. Was keeping the current.
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: I like the current references, so it's yeah, it would
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: be earlier.
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: Is it when she didn't get like when she got
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: in an addition, no, that was close by.
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: I was more mad than sad at that point. It
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: was you really wanted her to get the dangerous mind
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: show and you be tripping.
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: Although we should have talked about that scene because the
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: like having us be looking at her and then the
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: person come up behind her shoulder so we know before
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: she does. Is so that's probably not even that like
- 1:12:21Speaker 3: special of framing. But I just really like it, just just.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: Instantly like no, no, no, don't do this. You know,
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: it's so great.
- 1:12:29Speaker 5: Yeah, it's like being at a movie theater during an
- 1:12:31Speaker 5: emotional moment and then somebody pulls out their phone and
- 1:12:34Speaker 5: she AM's the song that's or kicks.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: The hell out of the back of your seat and
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: they're all one the other.
- 1:12:42Speaker 5: It takes you out of the moment.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: That's lifting it up is like the extra dude. Yeah,
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: those theaters are so loud, you do not need to
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: lift it up at all. Soundtrack What are we doing here?
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: That's so dumb? Sucks?
- 1:13:00Speaker 5: Really, So it was it was so is this an
- 1:13:04Speaker 5: old person? Yeah? Yeah, he was an older and that old.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: You know, things good for him. What was the last one, Oh, yeah, sorry,
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: I got distratched.
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: Uh when she she.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: Like walks in on him playing for the first time
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: in the.
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: When she's walking on the street after her targets tone
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: and she.
- 1:13:26Speaker 5: Hears the music and then she goes up to him
- 1:13:28Speaker 5: and tells him like, I heard you playing yeah by her?
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: Yeah that and it.
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: Was really her her acting when she sees him and
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: is just like whoa like kind of tractor beamed in
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: almost on that that melody, right, like she really sees
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: him in that moment, or at least the artist in him.
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: Was he playing there song?
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: Then her melody? Yeah, that's her melody. It's yeah. So
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: that that was the only other one though, you guys
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: nailed it.
- 1:13:58Speaker 5: Otherwise, I didn't nail anything. I wrote down zero. I
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: can't read to you anymore. I feel like when we
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: started doing this, when I started doing this, I knew,
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: and now it's just I'm just throwing numbers on a
- 1:14:08Speaker 5: piece of favor.
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: And you know, you just got to think about, like, oh,
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: when do people feel things? And if someone else feels things,
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: then dukes will cry.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: That's really all it is. That really is.
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: It's the whole time just so uplifting over all the
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: movie that I just I couldn't bring myself to feel
- 1:14:26Speaker 5: sad at any moment. It's beautiful.
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: It doesn't have to be sad for me to cry.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: I'll tell you that much. It gets me quite a
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: few times.
- 1:14:34Speaker 5: I was wondering how a sad happy ending would work,
- 1:14:37Speaker 5: and I'm starting to understanding.
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: I've had a few movie trivia. According to the composer
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: justin Your Wits, all the piano performances featured in the
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: film were recorded by the pianist Randy Kerber. During pre production,
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: Ryan Gosling Ben spent two hours a day, six days
- 1:14:56Speaker 3: a week in piano lessons, learning to play the music
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: by heart. By the time filming had begun, Gosling was
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: able to play all the piano sequence scene in the
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: film without the use of a hand double or CGI.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: And that's awesome. That's wild. He is a musician.
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: I think he plays guitar otherwise, so you know, it's
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: not totally new.
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: But this guy just can do anything, apparently, which is
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: awesome frustrating.
- 1:15:21Speaker 3: The audition scene where casting director interrupts MEA's emotional performance
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: to take the phone call was inspired by one of
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: Ryan Gosling's auditions in real life, So that was like
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: a real thing that happened.
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: Love that sucky.
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: The crew had a limited time window of thirty minutes
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: exactly between seven to twenty pm and seven fifty pm
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: within two days to film the Magic Hour, Dusky Purple
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: Twilight Hollywood Hills dance sequence, and according to everyone there,
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: they managed five takes. According to the director, Emma Stone
- 1:16:01Speaker 3: and Ryan Gosling managed five takes in two days, where
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: after each take they would go back to the starting
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: point with assistants wiping this weat from you know, their
- 1:16:09Speaker 3: faces and everything before immediately starting the dance routine again.
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: And it's the fourth take is that that is the
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: one that's used in the final film. So I just
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: think that's how stressful like and they must have had
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: to rehearse so much before that to be able.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: To get you know, like and it was funny watching
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: it this time. I was like, that's real, right, like
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: or is that some of it real?
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: But some of us it's crazy. So what a beautiful scene.
- 1:16:39Speaker 3: The line in the film said by Sebastian of that's
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: la they worship everything they value nothing was actually added
- 1:16:45Speaker 3: in by Ryan Gosling himself when he heard his real
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: life partner Eva Mendez mentioned it as a joke.
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: I thought that was nice.
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: Yeah, pretty fun.
- 1:16:59Speaker 3: Because Damian Chazelle wanted to shoot the scene in the
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: tradition of an old musical without cuts or editing. Ryan
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: Gosling practiced playing the piano and played it himself in
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: one take. On the first day of shooting, co star
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: John Legend, who's classically trained as a pianist, said he
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: is jealous of how quickly Gosling learned to play so well,
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: and he wasn't the only one that had to learn
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: an instrument. John Legend himself, I had to learn how
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: to play guitar for this role.
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: That was probably easier. Those were surprisingly that one scene,
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: He's got a great song, Like, I like that song
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: that they do with John Legend. It's the only time
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: where there's clearly lip syncing happening. I was also, why
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: are we making John Legend lip sync? What has happened? Right?
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: So that was weird. And then also I felt like
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: he wasn't really playing the guitar at least it didn't
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: look like it, and well, he's not great at it,
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: and he's like, but he's he's the musician. That why wasn't. Yeah,
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: why was that was weird? That was odd?
- 1:18:08Speaker 5: Sure, I could see the lip syncing being intentional, like
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: to add cheesiness to the now, to remove authenticity from
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: the band, to further make it apparent that Gostling selling out.
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: Maybe because there's a.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: It's probably just because there's so many people in that scene.
- 1:18:28Speaker 5: Sure, yeah, it's probably hard to record.
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: Maybe there's a there's a quote because Legend wrote that song,
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: I think, and there's a quote from him that like,
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: it was hard. I had to make it good enough
- 1:18:37Speaker 5: that it wasn't comically bad, but bad enough that Sebastian
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: would be ashamed of singing.
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: Kind of soul lists or something as well. I guess, Yeah,
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: that's interesting poppy, but I liked it. I liked it too.
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: That was interesting. Uh.
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: The Sebastian's tip about amplifying the car's fob range by
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: holding it under your chin does work.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: Most fobs have.
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: A frequency that resonates well with water, and the human
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: brain is mostly water. And that is a thing that
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: I do when I'm in a parking lot and don't
- 1:19:11Speaker 3: know where my car is. You really do hold it
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: to your head. I think from this movie. I assume
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: from this, and it does seem to make a difference.
- 1:19:20Speaker 5: Do you open your mouth? Do you have to open
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: your mouth?
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: Uh?
- 1:19:25Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: My mouth is usually a gape anyway, so I don't know.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: It's hard hard for me to quantify that. I guess
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: I also thought of a dirty joke there.
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: Let's see cool, oh, I said the thing about the
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: fools who dream seeing the audition scene being she was
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: listening to the piano and shows during the shoot. Ryan
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: Gosling's partner, Eva Mendez was looking after their daughter, was
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: also pregnant with their second daughter and caring my brother.
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: Dude, I just saw this the clips that during his
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: Golden Globe speech, Yep, that's what made it is amazing.
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: It's so wonderful.
- 1:20:10Speaker 3: Go watch the thing in the In the seventy fourth
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: Annual Golden Globes in twenty seventeen, Gosling tearfully acknowledged Mendez
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: for her strength while he was preoccupied with dancing and
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: music practice, and dedicated his A War to her brother,
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: who then passed away shortly after the film had wrapped.
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: But I just thought that was such a sweet moment,
- 1:20:28Speaker 3: and I remember that was that clip is having seen
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: it and then being.
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: Like, oh, yeah, that was this and all that.
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: So they seem like they have such a lovely relationship
- 1:20:38Speaker 3: with one another.
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: They just they seem great.
- 1:20:41Speaker 5: That's nice they do.
- 1:20:43Speaker 3: Let's see. Chazelle is known for using long, uninterrupted takes
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: in film, but he also uses at least one sequence
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: spooled backward. And in the last scene in the planetarium,
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: Gossling and Amma Stone fall out of the air perfectly
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: into their seats. Then they smooched, and then the camera
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: zoo's in for a close up before the fade. The
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: sequence was actually shot backward, starting in black, zooming out
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: to the kiss telescope, out to the two shot, then
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: the wide shot, and then Stone and Gosling are lifted
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: out of their chair and then they run it in reverse,
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: which I didn't realize for sure, And apparently that's how
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: they They did it that way because they wanted them
- 1:21:26Speaker 3: to perfectly land in their seats and that was like the.
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: Best way to do it, I guess. So that's pretty wild.
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: They made that so difficult, which is funny, but it
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: was great.
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: Rob, Your longtime friend Tom Hanks was so impressed by
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: this film that during a press conference for the film Sully,
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: he told all the reporters to go see it as
- 1:21:48Speaker 3: soon as they.
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: Could, and I just thought that was nice. He's a
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: nice guy. Yeah, there the best. Oh.
- 1:22:00Speaker 3: Prior to filming, Damien Chazelle, Ryan Gosling, and Emma Stone
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: visited Gene Kelly's widow and were able to look through
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: many of Kelly's film memorabilia, including his leather bound copy
- 1:22:10Speaker 3: of the script for Singing in the Rain. At the
- 1:22:12Speaker 3: end of the visit, Kelly's widow's dog escaped, and Chazelle
- 1:22:17Speaker 3: and Gosling ended up running through traffic to rescue the dog,
- 1:22:22Speaker 3: with Chazelle apparently saying to Gosling, we will not kill
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: Gene Kelly's widow's dog. And they were successful in rescuing
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: the dog, and all was well.
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: Oh, that's good.
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: But I just thought that was funny, like, we're not
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: doing this, not today, This isn't happening. The opening number,
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: Another Day in the Sun, was filmed at an extremely
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: hot temperature of one hundred and nine degrees. They filmed
- 1:22:49Speaker 3: it over two days. Both were both hit that temperature.
- 1:22:52Speaker 3: Each performer had two spare sets of costumes stored in
- 1:22:55Speaker 3: the cars which they then changed between takes to maximize
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: fit filming time. Choreographer Mandy Moore not that many more
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: different many Moore I looked it up. Started rehearsals in
- 1:23:06Speaker 3: May twenty fifteen at the parking lot behind the production office.
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: They mapped the sequence with miniature model cars and post
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: it notes, and then, during filming, to avoid being accidentally
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: filmed on the overhead camera, More was hidden beneath the
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: car so that she could bark instructions to the dancers
- 1:23:24Speaker 3: while they were filming.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: That was intense.
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: I like, the scene is insane, it's pretty great, and
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: they're like, I mean, they're all over the place. There's
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: everybody's doing something different.
- 1:23:36Speaker 5: It's crazy and not to step on your toes. But
- 1:23:39Speaker 5: an extension of that scene is if you watch the
- 1:23:41Speaker 5: opening again, you'll see the hoods of the cars are
- 1:23:43Speaker 5: actually dented because they've shot oh really dancing on top
- 1:23:49Speaker 5: of it, and you don't notice it unless you you
- 1:23:52Speaker 5: read that and totally get it.
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: Oh, I didn't even see that one. That's great, that's fun.
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: That's really fun.
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: Let's see a couple more here. The movie stops being
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: a musical at the moment Sebastian and Mia stopped being happy.
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: The next song was sung that is sung as the
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: audition when Mia starts feeling joy again. And I definitely
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: didn't realize that.
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: That's really cool.
- 1:24:14Speaker 5: No, but you do notice that, like it stops being
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: a music for sure, Like they came up a few times.
- 1:24:20Speaker 5: And in that scene there's actually a shot of a
- 1:24:24Speaker 5: record that's literally the needles run off the track and
- 1:24:27Speaker 5: it's the music really stopped. So that's a nice capture
- 1:24:31Speaker 5: of that theme.
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: That's great. Nice love. Did you know it's a it's
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: a dream? Did you get When Mia gives Sebastian a tour?
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: It was a callback callback?
- 1:24:49Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: When Mia does the give a Sebastian a tour of
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: the Warner Brothers backlot, she shows him a window that
- 1:24:56Speaker 3: was used in Casablanca. Much later near the end of
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: the movie, when Mia and her husband go into Sebastian's
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: club and he's stunned to see them. It's a clear
- 1:25:05Speaker 3: homage to the famous scene where Ilsai and Victor go
- 1:25:08Speaker 3: to Rick's Cafe Americane and Rick is stunt.
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: And I thought that was fine. I like that, Well,
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: here's looking at you.
- 1:25:18Speaker 5: I did not pick that up.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: I read this Uh, that was all I had. Did
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: you have a trivia rup? Yeah? I got a couple,
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: just a couple of people that were going to be
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: in it. Emma Watson turned down the role of Mia
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: due to scheduling conflicts with Beauty and the Beast Wow,
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: while Ryan Gosling turned down the role of the Beast
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: in that film to appear in this one. Coincidentally both
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: their musicals. Ironically, Emma Stone would later drop out of
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: the role of Meg March and Little Women due to
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: scheduling conflicts with promoting the favorite, and Watson was cast
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: her a place her in the part Wow. Crazy, isn't
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: it fun? A lot of weird stuff there. But I
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: did see that Miles Taylor with.
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: Watson pull us off. I was gonna Watson post movie
- 1:26:07Speaker 5: after mileser for that.
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: I have no idea. I have no idea. I don't
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: know an actress.
- 1:26:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I think at.
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: Yeah, So Miles Taylor was the guy for like a
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: long time, and then it sounds like Chazelle was just saying,
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: I don't know if you're gonna do it, and.
- 1:26:26Speaker 5: He fantastic four bomb did it. He got pulled, is
- 1:26:32Speaker 5: what I read.
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, but that's just so weird that that would
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: matter to him after they had that just huge tremendous success.
- 1:26:42Speaker 5: With like, yeah, I don't think Gosling could play that
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: role at all, right.
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: But from what I read, and who knows if it's
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: true or not, but it seems like Taylor was not
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: super stoked.
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: About that, like he was actually I get that, but
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: who knows. Hopefully you watched it and then.
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: Was like, well, Gosling was wonderful, So maybe maybe I
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: just let that one go. But I don't know. I like,
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: I feel like I could see Miles Teller doing that
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: role more than I could see Emma Watson, I agree,
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: doing switching that So I don't.
- 1:27:19Speaker 5: Know, though.
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: Singing would be better. I think she's got a prettier voice,
- 1:27:27Speaker 2: I think probably, but I.
- 1:27:29Speaker 3: Don't know if I've never seen her do anything like that,
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: So I don't know. I have no idea, but that
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: was all I had.
- 1:27:36Speaker 5: You guys missed the biggest one, the one like Shock.
- 1:27:42Speaker 5: So the overpass at the opening of the movie is
- 1:27:46Speaker 5: the same overpass that they filmed the bus jump in
- 1:27:49Speaker 5: speed On.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: The infamous where it just doesn't have a ramp or anything,
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: but that bus goes up.
- 1:27:59Speaker 5: But it was going at least fifty miles an hour
- 1:28:01Speaker 5: or so. It was.
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a great one. Good call, Yeah, good call call. Well, yeah,
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: let's keep let's uh, let's will there be a sequel
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: judgment day, No, it's a pretty perfect ending.
