- 0:12Welcome to Sometimes Their Side Eye, a podcast about two friends
- 0:16having real and unfiltered conversations about dogs and
- 0:20people. Listen as we talk about our
- 0:22lives with dogs, training, behavior, share some laughs and
- 0:26a whole lot of banter. I'm Heather.
- 0:30And I'm Christy. What are we talking about this
- 0:33week, Christy? We are going to talk about ways
- 0:36to reduce stress and find joy with your dog.
- 0:39Look, it's a difficult time. We had a whole nother episode
- 0:42planned, but we're recording this on January 26th and it
- 0:47feels weird not to, to do something that just recognizes
- 0:54where we're at as a country and wherever you stand politically,
- 0:58that's not our objective to get to the bottom of.
- 1:01I think there are just a ton of people who are at at their.
- 1:08Breaking point? Yeah, they've given all they
- 1:11can. They're Jim scrolling, They're
- 1:13seeing all the things that are happening in our country right
- 1:17now. And there's not a an easy way to
- 1:21find joy right now. And I was thinking that one, our
- 1:26dogs don't know the political climate.
- 1:30They don't know, you know, Republican versus Democrat
- 1:35protest. They don't know any of that,
- 1:38which good for them. Yeah, I, I, I'm feeling pretty
- 1:42jealous right now, I'll be honest.
- 1:45Yeah, So there's there's a chance for them to bring us joy
- 1:51and peace in a way that we can't find among other human beings
- 1:55right now. And so I thought, you know, we
- 1:58can't fix the world. We can't fix this time in
- 2:02history. But maybe we can give you some
- 2:04pointers to at least start you thinking about ways to to get
- 2:08outside of yourself, to think outside of the box when it comes
- 2:12to stress relief in this time. Yeah, so when Christy brought
- 2:18this topic to me, I just pretty much felt a resounding yes.
- 2:23I had said to someone earlier today that I suffer from general
- 2:29anxiety disorder, from sort of where I am now, but from a PTSD
- 2:36diagnosis, from a traumatic experience.
- 2:39And I am feeling really anxious these days and it is taking me
- 2:45back to what have I been doing for the last five years to
- 2:48manage my anxiety successfully. And so I kind of wanted to share
- 2:55a couple of those things because I think that the anxiousness of
- 3:02the world right now is wrapped up in all of the different
- 3:08things. And if we can even have some
- 3:12tips on how to deal with that, a piece of it, a piece of what
- 3:17we're feeling, then maybe it can start the ball rolling or even
- 3:22just take the edge off. So yeah.
- 3:24And we're not experts. So if you're feeling, you know,
- 3:28overly anxious or depressed, go seek professional help.
- 3:32Please don't listen to us podcast.
- 3:34They're not those people, but hopefully give you we're
- 3:38hopefully gonna give you a tidbit of like, oh, I hadn't
- 3:41thought of that. That might be you might try that
- 3:44and see if that brings me some calm.
- 3:46And not surprisingly, 3 of the tips I'm going to give are all
- 3:50related to my dogs. So these are tips that I was
- 3:55given by a professional and I related them back to my dogs and
- 4:00how they can help me. So the first one I would say is
- 4:05finding joy in the smallest things.
- 4:08And so I'll give you a couple of examples.
- 4:12Sitting in the sunshine with my dogs, breathing in the blue
- 4:17skies of Arizona, that brings me joy.
- 4:20And I do that sitting alongside my dogs.
- 4:23So that simple moment of going outside, letting the sun hit my
- 4:29face and doing that with them is something that helps me to take
- 4:38a breather, literally and figuratively.
- 4:41So that would be one of the first ones.
- 4:44Although if you're in one of our cold weather states, we're
- 4:48sorry. We're sorry, but.
- 4:51Even just stepping away, you know that that forces you to
- 4:55step away from the bubble that maybe you're sitting in doom
- 4:58scrolling in or stepping away from your computer for work, or
- 5:02you're just staring, forces you to get up and move your body and
- 5:08go to a different space physically.
- 5:10So although if you're in the East Coast where you just got
- 5:14all the snow, I'm so sorry, it does really give you a reason to
- 5:18kind of get the blood flowing and, and change your space.
- 5:21So that would be 1. And then of course, I'm doing it
- 5:24alongside my dogs. Of course.
- 5:28Another one that I use is if I feel myself starting to feel
- 5:33anxious or go to a place mentally where I don't want to
- 5:37be, I ground myself. And of course I ground myself
- 5:40using Tiago because hello. What do you mean when you say
- 5:44you ground yourself? So here's the example of
- 5:47grounding myself. I focus on what I smell, what I
- 5:52see, what I feel. It is using my senses to take in
- 5:59that experience. So for me, I will hug Tiago, I
- 6:05will feel his fur, I will smell his fur, I will look down and
- 6:13see him. I use my senses to focus on him.
- 6:20And that is how I ground myself using him.
- 6:25So. It is and it is really helpful.
- 6:29And sometimes all I have, all I have available is to use maybe
- 6:37one or two of my senses. And so my choice is to feel his
- 6:41fur and smell his fur. So if you can't do it all, if
- 6:46you need to close your eyes and breathe deep, I would say
- 6:50breathe deep into your dog. Don't choose a bulldog, they
- 6:55stinky. I was like trying not to giggle
- 6:59to myself as I was picturing you trying to do this with with.
- 7:02Tater, Tater and Trin are not the choice.
- 7:08And then the third one that I use.
- 7:11Now this involves a little bit of training, but I sort of took
- 7:15it from something he was offering.
- 7:17Naturally, I taught Tiago to quote UN quote cuddle, which
- 7:22means he takes his head and puts it on my chest and the weight of
- 7:30his head can be very grounding and it can give me something
- 7:34else to focus on. It's very comforting and so if
- 7:39you have any dog, maybe you don't have a dog with a big
- 7:42head, but you have a dog that likes to sleep on your chest.
- 7:45Trin also likes to sleep on my chest.
- 7:47Very grounding, very comforting, the warmth of their body.
- 7:51When Thiago does it, I will actually match my breathing to
- 7:55his breathing. So if I have like a hurried pace
- 7:59in my breathing, I will try to slow down by matching his
- 8:03breath. And that is very helpful.
- 8:05But you could use that with a small dog.
- 8:07With a cat, you could stroke your cat's fur.
- 8:10There's there's a lot of different ways to take what I do
- 8:14and morph it into something that works for you.
- 8:17So those are my 3 tips of how I have taken things that
- 8:23therapists have given to me as tools and sort of modified them
- 8:27into what works for me and my dogs.
- 8:31And I am reminding myself that I need to use those things right
- 8:34now. Yeah, for sure, my tips are much
- 8:39simpler I've. Gone to a lot more therapy than
- 8:44Christy. Mine are are really simple go
- 8:53walk your dog with no goal in mind so I love.
- 8:56That. Not the goal of having a perfect
- 9:00heel or, you know, going on an adventure or whatever, but just
- 9:04walk with your dog with no goal in mind.
- 9:07I did that actually right before we came and recorded.
- 9:10I just let him walk and he sniffed around the park and, and
- 9:15he actually started out pretty anxious himself, which is really
- 9:18unusual for him. And so probably feeling a little
- 9:22of my anxiousness. And by the end, we were both
- 9:26like a big sigh of relief. I would also say if you're out
- 9:32and you see beauty, just recognize it.
- 9:37So also on a walk tonight. It was a really lovely sunset
- 9:40again Arizona. I was out in Capri pants and
- 9:45the. Light.
- 9:47Sweater and enjoying the beautiful sunset.
- 9:50Obviously wherever you're at there's there's beauty and
- 9:54sometimes it's really hard to find but you can find beauty in
- 9:58the way the light reflects off the snow or that inch of ice
- 10:02that's on your trees right now. It hangs down, whatever it is,
- 10:05find some beauty. And if you have a dog that will
- 10:08allow you to, to stand and observe that beauty, then do
- 10:14that. Take a moment.
- 10:16Yeah, yeah. You don't have a dog that allows
- 10:19you to stay in that moment. That's OK too.
- 10:21You don't recognize it, Maybe take a picture of it so you have
- 10:25it for later. I know a lot of times we say
- 10:27like disconnect from your phone if you're walking or.
- 10:31But if you have a dog that's like, hey, we, we cannot stay
- 10:34for more than two seconds. We got to go, go, go.
- 10:36That's OK. Like just maybe take a picture
- 10:39so you can say, oh, that was really as beautiful as I thought
- 10:42it was and think through that. And I would say with your dog,
- 10:47just play some fun games. We played some tossy treat games
- 10:53tonight. I'm planning on playing with
- 10:55Jackson in the backyard. He loves when I go to the
- 10:58backyard and just act like I'm going to chase him for no reason
- 11:02and he zooms around the yard and that his his unbridled joy
- 11:07brings me joy. And so sometimes it's just
- 11:10taking a step off the couch to do that.
- 11:13And then seeing your dog smile is like such a weight lifted, in
- 11:20my opinion, or at least it is for me.
- 11:23And if you're looking for more structure, I would say, you
- 11:27know, some dogs really enjoy training.
- 11:28Some people really enjoy training, but like, train
- 11:31something fun. I'm not serious.
- 11:34I'm. Doing trick training right now.
- 11:36I'm hardcore trick training right now.
- 11:38Yeah. Things that bring you and your
- 11:41dog joy, things that aren't overly thought out or are tough,
- 11:45things that aren't going to bring frustration.
- 11:47And that might be revisiting old tricks too, that you know your
- 11:52dog can nail, but they're going to love getting a treat for
- 11:54that. Yeah, and I would say as well,
- 11:58if all you have to give is to take 20 minutes and go lay with
- 12:04your dogs and cuddle in bed, by all means go for it.
- 12:09Like if you just need to pull your covers over your head and
- 12:13take a moment, or maybe your dog can't offer you that but you
- 12:17need it, do not be afraid to take that.
- 12:21Put the phone down. We're all doing it to a fault.
- 12:24I've been trying to read more which is not dog related, but I
- 12:27really have been trying to make a concerted effort to to take
- 12:32moments to be away from everything.
- 12:34Just just figure out something that that you can do to find a
- 12:41little piece. And if you're in a stage where
- 12:43you don't have a pet, but yeah, you're still listening to us.
- 12:47Take care. Maybe ask to borrow a friend's
- 12:54dog if you're like that. I mean, hey, I just need some,
- 12:57like, some animal time because animals do good for our hearts.
- 13:01Yeah. And it's OK.
- 13:03But, you know, if if you're like, hey, I actually don't need
- 13:07any more human time, can I just borrow your dog?
- 13:11I for one, am not going to be offended by that.
- 13:14I love to see my friends. But I also understand sometimes
- 13:17we need no more people time. Yeah.
- 13:19I get that. Yep.
- 13:21Yeah. So everyone, please, please take
- 13:24care of yourself and do whatever you need to do to stay as well
- 13:31as possible right now. And know that we recognize that
- 13:36it's tough times and hopefully you've gotten a tip here or you
- 13:43listen to this and think, I know somebody who really needs to
- 13:45listen to this and you can pass it on.
- 13:47And that sort of shares the love a little bit to give people
- 13:51ideas how to take care of themselves right now.
