Latest / Hutton & Withrow Show / Hutton & Withrow: Vanderbilt Without Diego Pavia EXPOSED? Dan Orlovsky's Embarrassing ESPN Moment | Hour 1
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome into another edition of the Hutton and Withrow show
- 0:03Speaker 1: across the sport and state network. Good morning, everyone. I
- 0:07Speaker 1: am Chad Withrow, Jonathan Hutton, not with us right now,
- 0:11Speaker 1: but Crockett coffee is with me right now. And sometimes
- 0:15Speaker 1: it's all you need a little boost. I'm gonna take
- 0:17Speaker 1: a little sip right now. Delicious, delicious Crockett coffee is
- 0:21Speaker 1: going to fuel me throughout this morning. We got a
- 0:23Speaker 1: ton to get to today. How much is too much?
- 0:26Speaker 1: We're going to talk about that a little bit later.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Our fearless leader, Clay Travis, has ranked chain sit-down restaurants.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I have thoughts. My thoughts might surprise you. Normally, I'd
- 0:37Speaker 1: like to criticize Clay and his opinions as much as possible.
- 0:41Speaker 1: But on this one, I fear that Clay almost nailed
- 0:44Speaker 1: his rankings on this one. He got very close to
- 0:47Speaker 1: doing it. So good job by Clay there. We got
- 0:49Speaker 1: a lot to get to with the SEC. We're going
- 0:51Speaker 1: to go for the bundle and give you our parlay
- 0:54Speaker 1: for this week coming up as well. So much to
- 0:56Speaker 1: get to on this Wednesday edition. Oh, also, every Wednesday
- 1:00Speaker 1: means one thing, primary complaint. JT's got a good one.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I've got a good one for you. You can hit
- 1:06Speaker 1: us up in the YouTube chat. Let us know yours
- 1:08Speaker 1: as well. We may read some of those on air.
- 1:11Speaker 1: But first, I want to get to a couple of
- 1:12Speaker 1: corrections before we get into the big topic to start today.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I don't feel the need to be, you know, Pat
- 1:19Speaker 1: McAfee and come back and talk about fearing for my
- 1:22Speaker 1: life or people are so mean to me online or
- 1:25Speaker 1: anything like that. But I will say that most of
- 1:28Speaker 1: the time when people are mean to me online, I
- 1:30Speaker 1: do like for the material they're criticizing me about to
- 1:33Speaker 1: be accurate. And it's something that I said or that
- 1:37Speaker 1: I ranked. I love my guy, Brooks, who does our graphics,
- 1:41Speaker 1: does a great job. And Brooks, by the way, is
- 1:44Speaker 1: an expert at this. He knows the pulse of the people.
- 1:47Speaker 1: He knows what's going to get people going. So I
- 1:50Speaker 1: feel like when Brooks puts this graphic up about Texas
- 1:54Speaker 1: being the fifth most disappointing team in America and not
- 1:58Speaker 1: what I sent to him and JT, which was Sark
- 2:01Speaker 1: and Arch being fifth, I'm pretty sure that he knows
- 2:06Speaker 1: this is going to get engagement. Can you throw that
- 2:08Speaker 1: up there again? Because I want to read that first
- 2:10Speaker 1: comment that comes down to me. You don't know ball.
- 2:15Speaker 1: And then an expletive thrown my way. That was about
- 2:18Speaker 1: 85 of the comments that came to me because people
- 2:21Speaker 1: have the inability to read when I post and say,
- 2:24Speaker 1: I'm talking about the offense with Sarkeesian and Arch and
- 2:28Speaker 1: not Texas as a whole, but Texas fans just roasting
- 2:32Speaker 1: me left and right. because of that graphic by putting
- 2:35Speaker 1: Texas up there. So Brooks, I want twofold here. One,
- 2:39Speaker 1: you're a genius. Thank you. That got way more engagement
- 2:42Speaker 1: on that than I ever could have imagined. And two, man,
- 2:45Speaker 1: you hung me out to dry on that one. If
- 2:47Speaker 1: I don't take enough shrapnel because of people making fun
- 2:50Speaker 1: of me for my other takes or Iowa fans all
- 2:52Speaker 1: over me or whatever it may be, now Texas fans
- 2:55Speaker 1: have a reason to hate me also. Let me clarify,
- 2:58Speaker 1: Texas fans. I do not think you're one of the
- 3:00Speaker 1: top five biggest disappointments as a team. You have three
- 3:03Speaker 1: of the biggest wins in college football, Ohio State at Tennessee,
- 3:07Speaker 1: and you beat Ole Miss at home. Now you have
- 3:09Speaker 1: two losses, which is disappointing for Texas fans, having started
- 3:13Speaker 1: the way you did. That loss to Florida at home
- 3:16Speaker 1: was greatly disappointing for Texas, especially where they were ranked
- 3:21Speaker 1: nationally at that point. But I don't think your team
- 3:24Speaker 1: is as disappointing as some others. Do I think that
- 3:27Speaker 1: Arch Manning and Steve Sarkeesian in that offense is disappointing? Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I think that is disappointing. So, yeah, that's a big
- 3:36Speaker 1: issue for you. Let's get to another team that's been
- 3:40Speaker 1: disappointing so far this season. We do the show here
- 3:43Speaker 1: in Nashville. I've had a longstanding feud with Vanderbilt fans.
- 3:48Speaker 1: That Cold War has thawed over the years. I think
- 3:51Speaker 1: Vandy fans, they understand me a little bit more. I
- 3:54Speaker 1: understand Vandy fans a little bit more. I know a
- 3:56Speaker 1: lot of the people in charge of the Vanderbilt football program.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I like all the people in charge. I think they're
- 4:02Speaker 1: very smart. This is the opposite of what's going on
- 4:04Speaker 1: with the Titans right now, where I don't really know
- 4:06Speaker 1: many people with the Titans. I don't particularly like the
- 4:10Speaker 1: people that I do know. Some I do like. But
- 4:13Speaker 1: I also think that, and the results bear this out,
- 4:16Speaker 1: that it's wildly incompetent the way that organization is run.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I don't think that's the case with Vanderbilt football. I
- 4:23Speaker 1: think Clark Lee is one of the smartest guys that
- 4:26Speaker 1: I've met in coaching, deeply analytical, deeply– Not insulated, but
- 4:33Speaker 1: he is someone who internally thinks about what he can
- 4:36Speaker 1: do every day to be better and to better his program,
- 4:39Speaker 1: which I think is a good thing. He's introspective. That's
- 4:41Speaker 1: the word I'm looking for. A very introspective coach is
- 4:45Speaker 1: Clark Lee. And I think he's done a nice job
- 4:48Speaker 1: at Vandy. But yesterday I started thinking about it. And
- 4:51Speaker 1: I started thinking about the record of Clark Lee when
- 4:54Speaker 1: he doesn't have Diego Pavi. And I'm like, man, how
- 4:57Speaker 1: bad is it? Because when you look at his tenure,
- 5:00Speaker 1: he's into year seven now, six years in. So 2021,
- 5:04Speaker 1: he came in. 21, 22, 23, 24, 25. He's in
- 5:08Speaker 1: year six at this point. When you look at the
- 5:12Speaker 1: numbers of what he's actually accomplished when he doesn't have
- 5:15Speaker 1: Diego Pavia quarterback. Now, look, I get it. You take
- 5:19Speaker 1: anybody's best year or two off of their record and
- 5:21Speaker 1: their record is going to look worse than it is.
- 5:24Speaker 1: So I'm not trying to cherry pick here. But I
- 5:27Speaker 1: am asking a bigger question. How sustainable is Vanderbilt football
- 5:32Speaker 1: with Clark Lee or anyone else when you take away
- 5:36Speaker 1: the guy who transferred from New Mexico State and the
- 5:38Speaker 1: whole New Mexico State mafia, Stowers, Pavia, Tim Beck, bringing
- 5:44Speaker 1: everyone over from there that ran the offense, that organized
- 5:48Speaker 1: the offense, that two-year blip for Vandy. Is that a blip?
- 5:52Speaker 1: Or is this something you can recreate in the SEC
- 5:56Speaker 1: at Vanderbilt? So I crunched the numbers, and here's what
- 5:59Speaker 1: I found. This is Clark Lee without, with and without
- 6:04Speaker 1: Diego Pavia. With Pavia, 17-9 overall, 9-7 in the SEC.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Without Diego Pavia, 12-32 overall, 2-27 in the conference. Okay,
- 6:09Speaker 1: 2-27 in the conference is winning 7% of your SEC games. 12-32,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and that's with a lot of bye games mixed in
- 6:25Speaker 1: each year. That's going to get less, by the way.
- 6:27Speaker 1: You get one less win on the schedule now that
- 6:30Speaker 1: you have nine SEC games. That's 37% of his overall
- 6:34Speaker 1: games won. Offensively, they go from averaging 390 yards per
- 6:39Speaker 1: game with Pavia to, over the other years, 330 yards
- 6:44Speaker 1: per game. Now, again, he got Diego Pavia. I give
- 6:49Speaker 1: him full marks for doing that. That is a great accomplishment.
- 6:52Speaker 1: And all the success that he had there is in
- 6:54Speaker 1: part due to Clark Lee. I mean, Clark Lee brought
- 6:57Speaker 1: in a guy who got to New York as a
- 6:58Speaker 1: Heisman finalist. It's incredible. This is Vanderbilt football. We're not
- 7:02Speaker 1: talking about Notre Dame, where he came from. We're not
- 7:05Speaker 1: talking about Alabama. We're not talking about Michigan. We're talking
- 7:08Speaker 1: about Vanderbilt football. And everybody knows the history of Vanderbilt football.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Not great.
- 7:13Speaker 1: So Clark Lee was able to accomplish that. So he
- 7:15Speaker 1: gets full credit for that. He gets full credit for
- 7:18Speaker 1: diagnosing a big problem within his own organization and his
- 7:22Speaker 1: own program and saying, you know what? Yeah, we had
- 7:25Speaker 1: a good year in 22, and then we backslid in 23.
- 7:29Speaker 1: So starting in 24, he said, I'm going to blow
- 7:31Speaker 1: this thing up. I'm going to bring in a head
- 7:34Speaker 1: coach on offense. I'm going to pay attention more to
- 7:36Speaker 1: the defense, and I'm going to let Diego Pavia– And
- 7:40Speaker 1: that offense, Tim Beck, Jerry Kill, everybody come in for
- 7:43Speaker 1: New Mexico State and run this thing. And it worked.
- 7:47Speaker 1: It worked. They go 10-2 a year ago in the
- 7:49Speaker 1: regular season. They beat arch rival Tennessee in that game.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I mean, it worked beautifully for them at that point
- 7:57Speaker 1: in time. But is it going to work from here
- 8:02Speaker 1: on out?
- 8:03Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I don't know. And keep in mind that record, 12-32 overall, 2-27.
- 8:10Speaker 1: In the SEC, let's compare that to some other coaches
- 8:13Speaker 1: who just got fired. Mike Loxley at Maryland, a program
- 8:16Speaker 1: that I don't think many people would think is that
- 8:17Speaker 1: much better than Vanderbilt, and they're in a tough conference,
- 8:19Speaker 1: the Big Ten. 38-49 overall, fired. Dave Aranda at Baylor,
- 8:25Speaker 1: another program that has been better since Art Bryles got there,
- 8:29Speaker 1: but let's face it, Baylor isn't also ran back in
- 8:32Speaker 1: the old Southwest Conference, the Big Eight, the Big 12,
- 8:35Speaker 1: wherever they're playing. 40-40, 500 record, fired.
- 8:40Speaker 2: At Baylor.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Clark Lee right now, and this is with Pavia, 29-41 overall.
- 8:47Speaker 1: 29-41 overall. This is not me saying that Clark Lee
- 8:50Speaker 1: is in trouble. I don't think he should be in trouble.
- 8:53Speaker 1: This is not me saying that Clark Lee did not
- 8:56Speaker 1: have huge accomplishments the last two years. He did. My
- 9:00Speaker 1: big question moving forward is, if you're Vanderbilt, you're a fan,
- 9:04Speaker 1: you're that football program, you've got to ask yourself, what
- 9:07Speaker 1: are we You're not Georgia. You're not Alabama. You're not Tennessee.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Everybody knows that about the program. But what I don't
- 9:16Speaker 1: want to see happen is I don't want to see
- 9:19Speaker 1: the powers that be at Vandy, the athletic department, the
- 9:22Speaker 1: people who spend money on NIL, all of that to say, guys,
- 9:25Speaker 1: this proves it. We're just Vandy. We're just Vandy. We're
- 9:29Speaker 1: always going to be Vandy. It doesn't matter what we do.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Now everyone's spending money. It doesn't even help us that much.
- 9:35Speaker 1: We're going to go right back to not committing and
- 9:37Speaker 1: not investing in football. Please don't do that. I beg
- 9:40Speaker 1: of you, please don't do that. Use this season to
- 9:43Speaker 1: motivate you. Use this season to motivate you. Vandy fans
- 9:47Speaker 1: and Vandy's program hates being compared to Tennessee. I get that.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I understand all those things. It's their rival. You need
- 9:55Speaker 1: to have a Tennessee-like response to this. And here's what
- 9:58Speaker 1: I mean by that. A year ago when Tennessee fell
- 10:01Speaker 1: apart late in the season, they couldn't stop anybody. They
- 10:04Speaker 1: weren't physical enough on defense. They missed a bunch of tackles.
- 10:07Speaker 1: They got physically manhandled by Vanderbilt in that final game,
- 10:10Speaker 1: in that second half in Neyland Stadium. The response from
- 10:14Speaker 1: Josh Heupel and Tennessee boosters and fans wasn't, oh crap,
- 10:19Speaker 1: we're just never going to be good in the SEC.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Let's give up and let's just keep doing what we've
- 10:23Speaker 1: done and hope to get six or seven wins a season.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Their response was to fire the defensive coordinator and hire
- 10:30Speaker 1: Jim Knowles. Their response was to spend more money on
- 10:33Speaker 1: a strength coach than any other program in America and
- 10:36Speaker 1: go hire the dude that just got freaking Indiana a
- 10:39Speaker 1: national championship to run their strength program. Both of those
- 10:43Speaker 1: moves have worked out beautifully for Tennessee. Their response was motivational. hey,
- 10:48Speaker 1: we don't want to get run over like that by
- 10:50Speaker 1: Vanderbilt again late in the year. Let's go do something
- 10:54Speaker 1: about it. The response was not to throw your arms
- 10:56Speaker 1: up in the air. I'm not trying to pretend that
- 10:59Speaker 1: I can tell the future or know exactly what's going
- 11:01Speaker 1: to happen. I'm just pleading with Vanderbilt, everybody there, and
- 11:05Speaker 1: I know Clark Lee would agree with me on this,
- 11:08Speaker 1: and everybody involved with that program. Don't throw your hands
- 11:12Speaker 1: up in the air because this looks like it's going
- 11:13Speaker 1: to be a lost season and say, well– We're just Vandy.
- 11:18Speaker 1: What'd you guys expect? Not going to get much better
- 11:21Speaker 1: than this. There's not much we can do in this SEC.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Don't do that. Use this as motivation. You've got a
- 11:28Speaker 1: five-star unique talent at quarterback that's a freshman. Build around him.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Go spend big money in the transfer portal. Go bring
- 11:36Speaker 1: in a top-notch receiver out of high school. Build weapons
- 11:40Speaker 1: around Jared Curtis and get this thing back closer to
- 11:44Speaker 1: to what we saw under Diego Pavia because we showed
- 11:47Speaker 1: you the record. That was a way different Vanderbilt team
- 11:50Speaker 1: than what we've seen without him so far. But use
- 11:53Speaker 1: what's happening this year as motivation and don't go right
- 11:56Speaker 1: back to, hey, same old Vandy. We just can't get
- 11:58Speaker 1: this done. I know Vandy fans agree with me on
- 12:00Speaker 1: that final point. They probably hate seeing those numbers of
- 12:03Speaker 1: Clark Lee without Diego Pavia, but numbers don't lie. Numbers
- 12:07Speaker 1: aren't racist. Numbers aren't Vandy haters. Numbers are numbers. He's
- 12:11Speaker 1: 2-27 in the SEC without Pavia. He's 12-32 overall. Now
- 12:17Speaker 1: you've got Jared Curtis, a five-star talent at quarterback. Build
- 12:20Speaker 1: around him. Motivate to get better. Don't sit back and say,
- 12:25Speaker 1: we can't make this happen. Because Pavia and the New
- 12:29Speaker 1: Mexico State Mafia, they showed that, in fact, you can
- 12:33Speaker 1: make it happen. We're going to take a quick break.
- 12:36Speaker 1: I think Jonathan Hutton is going to hop on with
- 12:37Speaker 1: us also. And we're going to discuss Dan Orlovsky, not
- 12:41Speaker 1: knowing that percent and percentage means that a number is
- 12:46Speaker 1: based out of 100. That sounds even crazier coming out
- 12:50Speaker 1: of my mouth as I say it. We're going to
- 12:53Speaker 1: play the clip for you, and we're going to react
- 12:55Speaker 1: when we come back. This is the Hutton & Withrow
- 12:57Speaker 1: Show on the Sporting State Network.
- 13:15Speaker 2: We turn to Hard Rock Bet for all of the odds,

- 14:27Speaker 2: We hope you'll spread the word about the show. It's
- 14:29Speaker 2: youtube.com slash at Hutton and Withrow. Chad, we know Dan
- 14:34Speaker 2: Orlovsky well enough to say he's a good dude and
- 14:38Speaker 2: that we like him, right? I mean, he's been on
- 14:40Speaker 2: our show I don't know how many times back in
- 14:41Speaker 2: the day on his own. He used to come on weekly,
- 14:44Speaker 2: and he was great. This was pre-ESPN days, and then
- 14:46Speaker 2: the ESPN days shut him off pretty much to our
- 14:50Speaker 2: liking because we were a Fox affiliate at the time
- 14:52Speaker 2: with his own.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Yeah, he's always been very generous with his time. When
- 14:57Speaker 1: he was starting out, he was going on local shows
- 15:01Speaker 1: like ours at the time, trying to get his footing
- 15:02Speaker 1: for being a quarterback analyst. Dan Orlovsky does– strike me
- 15:09Speaker 1: as almost even like when he was on with us
- 15:11Speaker 1: he almost seems like a child uh in that he's
- 15:15Speaker 1: got like a childlike wonderment for the world around him
- 15:19Speaker 1: yeah i think that he's it's i don't know i
- 15:21Speaker 1: i don't know his upbringing i don't know what it
- 15:22Speaker 1: was like so i don't want to pretend to know
- 15:25Speaker 1: everything about him but he almost feels like somebody's kind
- 15:27Speaker 1: of a little sheltered uh in certain things.
- 15:30Speaker 2: And he would treat his stuff as sport it was
- 15:31Speaker 2: a game He's.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Just all football though. Like he's all, you know, it's
- 15:35Speaker 1: not even, I can't say these analytics driven now that
- 15:37Speaker 1: we found this out, but it's all like plays and
- 15:41Speaker 1: here's how you spend the football and everything. He's just,
- 15:44Speaker 1: he's a different dude when it comes to that. Like
- 15:47Speaker 1: it feels, he's not very street smart. I would say when,
- 15:51Speaker 1: when you talk to him and he even hear him
- 15:53Speaker 1: on TV and watch him, that's the sense I get
- 15:55Speaker 1: about him. I'm even more certain of that after what
- 15:59Speaker 1: we heard him try to explain the to Pat McAfee
- 16:03Speaker 1: yesterday as if he was breaking down Pythagorean's theorem for
- 16:07Speaker 1: Pat McAfee. Here's Dan Orlovsky explaining to the audience what
- 16:11Speaker 1: percent means.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Can I ask you guys a question?
- 16:14Speaker 4: Yes. Great shot. I think that went in.
- 16:18Speaker 5: Okay. Hand to God, true story. Do you guys know
- 16:21Speaker 5: what percent, like the word percent.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Is derived from?
- 16:26Speaker 4: Percentile?
- 16:27Speaker 5: Percentage?
- 16:28Speaker 1: What?
- 16:28Speaker 3: But from what? Like how come it's percent?
- 16:33Speaker 4: Pizzas because i think okay so.
- 16:34Speaker 5: Hambo this morning was like joe burrow his sack rate
- 16:38Speaker 5: is four percent and i said dumb this down for
- 16:41Speaker 5: me why like no human's gonna hear me say that
- 16:45Speaker 5: i'm gonna make them smarter he goes well what do
- 16:47Speaker 5: you mean i said what does that actually mean he
- 16:49Speaker 5: goes well out of every 100 dropbacks he's getting sacked
- 16:53Speaker 5: four times and i said is that really what it
- 16:56Speaker 5: is like it's always out of.
- 16:57Speaker 3: 100 he's like per all right cent all right okay
- 17:00Speaker 3: no percentile Yeah. Centennial mark. Cent is 100, yeah, per 100.
- 17:05Speaker 3: You're a jackass, dude.
- 17:06Speaker 4: I knew 1% was out of 100, yeah.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Yeah, we all knew it was out of 100, yeah.
- 17:15Speaker 3: I didn't know it was always out of 100.
- 17:17Speaker 4: So it's 50%.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Wait, why did.
- 17:20Speaker 3: He say it? And I didn't know... Did you go
- 17:23Speaker 3: to school? Did you have a grading system? And I
- 17:27Speaker 3: didn't know it was... Holy fuck.
- 17:31Speaker 5: You knew percent was per cent, like cent meaning 100th century.
- 17:36Speaker 6: I don't think we knew the word.
- 17:38Speaker 1: We all knew it was out of 100.
- 17:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I always thought it could be a.
- 17:46Speaker 1: What?
- 17:46Speaker 2: 32. 88.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Man. Like two out of three is, yeah, 66%. But
- 17:52Speaker 1: if you keep going, there is 100 in there. Damn. Yeah.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Come on.
- 17:56Speaker 5: I was just, I did not know percent. That's why
- 17:59Speaker 5: it was broken down to me that way.
- 18:00Speaker 4: I love it to you. I love that you can
- 18:02Speaker 4: get on TV and say that now on NFL Live.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Who the fuck?
- 18:06Speaker 4: Let me break it down to you this way. He's
- 18:09Speaker 4: out of 100. Is that what he said to you?
- 18:11Speaker 4: And you said, oh.
- 18:13Speaker 5: And he goes to like one out of every 25.
- 18:16Speaker 5: And that's why I said that before with Joe. That's
- 18:18Speaker 5: how that came about.
- 18:20Speaker 4: I appreciate you leaving no stone unturned, but that's tough, dude.
- 18:26Speaker 4: That's a tough one. That's a tough one, especially with
- 18:29Speaker 4: like how much you talk about. stuff that revolves around percentages.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 18:34Speaker 3: I'm not a big numbers and percentage person, though, unless
- 18:37Speaker 3: they make sense to me.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Clearly.
- 18:39Speaker 4: And percents are out of 100. Congratulations, dude. That's Dan
- 18:45Speaker 4: Orlovsky there. 100% of the time, that's out of 100. 100%
- 18:49Speaker 4: means out of 100 times.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:51Speaker 3: It was more percent. Like, that was more of the.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. For sure.
- 18:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:56Speaker 6: No doubt.
- 18:56Speaker 3: No doubt, homie.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:58Speaker 4: Bro, yeah, bro. You're the best.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Stan Orlovsky.
- 19:01Speaker 2: My baby, Dan.
- 19:01Speaker 4: 50% of the time, he gets it right, which means half.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Yep.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Because... So he gets it.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Wow.
- 19:10Speaker 6: There you go.
- 19:14Speaker 3: He had courage to say that on.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Yeah, good on him.
- 19:16Speaker 5: You're right.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Yikes.
- 19:18Speaker 4: That is a tough thing to say.
- 19:20Speaker 3: On your way out.
- 19:21Speaker 4: As a sports person.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Yeah, the last thing everyone's going to remember.
- 19:25Speaker 5: Wow.
- 19:26Speaker 4: He's coming back. He forgot something. Did you leave a
- 19:28Speaker 4: percentage here?
- 19:29Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Sport cut. That would be about half of that suit,
- 19:34Speaker 4: which would be about 50%. Every time.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Half is 50%.
- 19:39Speaker 4: He picked up fast.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Great to see you, Bob. Great to see you, Dano.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Have a good day.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Dan, we appreciate you, dude.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Really don't know how you do life and how you've
- 19:49Speaker 4: gotten this far.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Proud of you, man.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Way to go, dude.
- 19:53Speaker 1: You defied all odds. Let's get to a break, dude.
- 19:57Speaker 2: That was tough. How long has he been on ESPN
- 20:01Speaker 2: and not known that? Using the word percent.
- 20:03Speaker 1: The whole time, apparently. Just that morning, he said his
- 20:06Speaker 1: stats guy gave him a percentage. Hey, I'm going to
- 20:09Speaker 1: break you guys down some news here that I just got.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Do you know what percent means? And they were like
- 20:15Speaker 1: trying to figure out. Look, I took Latin in high
- 20:18Speaker 1: school and it may have been the smartest thing that
- 20:20Speaker 1: I did because then I can break down words based
- 20:23Speaker 1: on the Latin root of it. But you don't have
- 20:26Speaker 1: to take Latin in high school to know that sent
- 20:29Speaker 1: and sent as a prefix is out of is 100 percent.
- 20:32Speaker 1: comes from the Latin word symptom. I thought he was
- 20:35Speaker 1: going to break down, hey, did you know that this
- 20:36Speaker 1: was a Latin word and the scent is actually from
- 20:39Speaker 1: a Latin word? That would be something that would be okay.
- 20:42Speaker 1: I think a lot of people know that, but at
- 20:44Speaker 1: least a little bit interesting. But when he goes into,
- 20:47Speaker 1: so you knew that it wasn't just like out of 138,
- 20:50Speaker 1: that it's out of 100? That's where my head dropped.
- 20:54Speaker 1: And you can tell McAfee and everyone's response was basically, GTFO,
- 20:58Speaker 1: you're putting us on. You didn't know that it was
- 21:00Speaker 1: out of 100. So when you see A free throw
- 21:04Speaker 1: shooter shoots 80%. You didn't know that they make 80
- 21:07Speaker 1: out of 100. He truly did not know that. And
- 21:11Speaker 1: that's the response when McAfee's saying, good job getting through
- 21:15Speaker 1: life this far and getting on TV and being employed
- 21:18Speaker 1: by ESPN and being on all these shows this entire
- 21:21Speaker 1: time when you just now learned that percent means out
- 21:24Speaker 1: of 100.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Chad, he is a 58% passer for his career at
- 21:25Speaker 2: the NFL.
- 21:30Speaker 1: He didn't know what that meant.
- 21:32Speaker 2: He went to that every single week. Um, which is worse.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Jared Goff, not knowing that the sun rises in the
- 21:39Speaker 2: East and sets in the West or this.
- 21:43Speaker 1: I would say on camera. Um, one was on hard docs.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Here's the thing about this, this deal, it will follow
- 21:51Speaker 1: him around forever. Um, Someone said, this is what you're
- 21:56Speaker 1: going to be remembered for. I think someone dropped in
- 21:59Speaker 1: there like, this is going to be the lasting impression
- 22:02Speaker 1: of the visit with us today is that you did
- 22:04Speaker 1: not know until now what percent mean.
- 22:07Speaker 2: No longer a safety.
- 22:10Speaker 1: I don't know if Dan Orlowski's gone on another show.
- 22:14Speaker 1: you know, talked about clarifying, Hey, I knew what a
- 22:16Speaker 1: hundred was. I just mistimed my words or I was
- 22:20Speaker 1: confused about, I didn't know the meaning of percent or
- 22:22Speaker 1: he's just going to own it that he truly didn't
- 22:24Speaker 1: know it. Just like Kyrie Irving, you know, when he
- 22:28Speaker 1: talked about, you know, was it not flat earth and
- 22:31Speaker 1: the people who were like, I don't think we landed
- 22:33Speaker 1: on the moon. You know, you'll always remember those, those
- 22:35Speaker 1: people who believe that Jared Goff is another great example.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I mean, look, we all have something that either took
- 22:44Speaker 1: us way late in life to figure out or realize
- 22:48Speaker 1: that's very simple for everyone else. But people who work
- 22:52Speaker 1: in sports, that thing would not be what a percentage
- 22:55Speaker 1: is and what the percentage point means. To say that
- 22:58Speaker 1: it was based out of 138, what's the number that
- 23:00Speaker 1: it's based out of? 100, dude. It's based out of
- 23:04Speaker 1: 100 every single time is wild.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Well, and he would use this. He started ESPN in 2018,
- 23:10Speaker 2: it says on Google. He's used this every single day. Clearly,
- 23:16Speaker 2: his research guy just puts words on a piece of
- 23:20Speaker 2: paper for him. And he says it. That's crazy, man.
- 23:23Speaker 2: I didn't know how to tie a tie for the
- 23:25Speaker 2: longest time. Chad, you know this. You've tied it for
- 23:28Speaker 2: me before. But that's different because I know that a
- 23:31Speaker 2: tie is tied.
- 23:33Speaker 3: You know?
- 23:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I know what the percentage is.
- 23:36Speaker 5: The....
- 23:38Speaker 2: Orlovsky's the one who brought it up on there. He
- 23:40Speaker 2: thought he was going to have someone on his side
- 23:42Speaker 2: for this.
- 23:44Speaker 1: It was, I mean, he, he really thought that he
- 23:46Speaker 1: was like, man, I got some really important information for,
- 23:49Speaker 1: for McAfee's crew today. I'm going to break down what,
- 23:51Speaker 1: did you guys know that, you know, when you hear percentage,
- 23:54Speaker 1: I don't even know what that means. Remember when Bill
- 23:56Speaker 1: O'Reilly didn't know what play us out, play us out
- 23:58Speaker 1: to play us out. And he's acting like this is
- 24:01Speaker 1: like new things to play us out, play us out.
- 24:04Speaker 1: What does that, what does that even mean? And he's
- 24:06Speaker 1: going like, I feel like Bill O'Reilly went to his
- 24:08Speaker 1: friends the next day. He's like, guys, I, I know
- 24:10Speaker 1: you guys have been in broadcasting for a while, but
- 24:12Speaker 1: did you know that play us out with a song
- 24:15Speaker 1: meant that the music is going to play you to
- 24:18Speaker 1: a break? Did you realize that in all your years?
- 24:21Speaker 1: And everyone's nodding and saying, yeah, Bill, we knew what.
- 24:25Speaker 1: We could figure it out even if we're not in broadcasting.
- 24:27Speaker 1: If someone says we're going to use this to play
- 24:29Speaker 1: you out, what that means, that they're going to play
- 24:32Speaker 1: you to break. I mean, this was the biggest. We had, what,
- 24:36Speaker 1: Mashed Carrots back in the day?
- 24:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 24:37Speaker 1: PK on our show. This was the worst case of
- 24:40Speaker 1: mashed carrots I've ever heard. This would be Orlovsky sarcastically
- 24:45Speaker 1: explaining to someone what percentage means to someone having known
- 24:49Speaker 1: what it is. But instead, it was Orlovsky thinking that
- 24:53Speaker 1: he just broke some sort of code by figuring this
- 24:56Speaker 1: word out and then went on air and told them that.
- 24:58Speaker 1: It was a very, very tough look and a tough
- 25:01Speaker 1: day for Dan Orlovsky. It's really bad.
- 25:05Speaker 2: They're going to have to add this to the ESPN
- 25:08Speaker 2: test to get a job. Dan Patrick would always give
- 25:10Speaker 2: insight on that. They'll quiz you on the second linesman
- 25:15Speaker 2: on a hockey team. They want to know the last
- 25:18Speaker 2: name of that guy and how you spell it. If
- 25:21Speaker 2: you're an anchor back in the day. They would just
- 25:24Speaker 2: gloss over percentage. Please define what a percent means. That's
- 25:30Speaker 2: the Orlovsky question. That's the Orlovsky rule.
- 25:33Speaker 1: This will also, this someone, I'm sure that I could
- 25:36Speaker 1: search it right now on Twitter. We're going to get
- 25:38Speaker 1: into a WNBA topic later where the big bad NBA
- 25:42Speaker 1: and it's a misogynistic scheduling dilemma that's going on right
- 25:45Speaker 1: now with the WNBA tomorrow. I guarantee you there is
- 25:48Speaker 1: someone on the internet that has said, here is a
- 25:52Speaker 1: white man employed by ESPN that they hired because he's
- 25:56Speaker 1: a white man and the dude does not know what
- 25:59Speaker 1: percent means. And he does not know that it's based
- 26:01Speaker 1: out of 100. And here, once again, it's privilege creeping
- 26:04Speaker 1: up where Dan Orlovsky got a job from ESPN. I'm
- 26:07Speaker 1: sure Dan Levitard is working on a bit right now
- 26:09Speaker 1: on his show that he's going to go into Dan
- 26:12Speaker 1: Orlovsky not understanding percentage. The problem with Dan Orlovsky is
- 26:15Speaker 1: he's such a nice dude to everybody.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Great guy.
- 26:17Speaker 1: I think a lot of people are going to have
- 26:18Speaker 1: a hard time just crushing him to that level because
- 26:21Speaker 1: he is such a nice guy. But that was a
- 26:23Speaker 1: tough look. The one example I can think of, again,
- 26:26Speaker 1: if we're being honest, everybody's got something. Now, we don't
- 26:29Speaker 1: go on national television and reveal how stupid we are
- 26:33Speaker 1: with something like that. That's something you keep to yourself
- 26:36Speaker 1: if you really didn't know what percent was until that
- 26:37Speaker 1: morning and you don't reveal it on air. Mine is
- 26:41Speaker 1: anything to do with the U.S. mail. If you gave
- 26:45Speaker 1: me an envelope right now to address, I still think
- 26:47Speaker 1: that I would confuse the right and the left. on
- 26:49Speaker 1: where the stamp goes and where everything else goes. We've
- 26:52Speaker 1: talked about this before, but I like get anxiety having
- 26:55Speaker 1: to do anything with the mail and even going back
- 26:58Speaker 1: to first grade when you learn how to address an
- 27:00Speaker 1: envelope and put the stamp on each side. I think
- 27:04Speaker 1: the stamp goes on the right side. I could be
- 27:06Speaker 1: completely off on that. And then the return address goes
- 27:09Speaker 1: over here, but it's something that every time I see it,
- 27:12Speaker 1: if I'm ever asked to do it, I second guess
- 27:15Speaker 1: myself on which is which. I know people who have
- 27:17Speaker 1: a hard time between right and left. Like, they legitimately
- 27:21Speaker 1: cannot get their brain around turn right.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Which way?
- 27:24Speaker 1: And they start to turn left. And I'm like, no, that's–
- 27:27Speaker 1: and you learn early, like, okay, if you're right-handed, what
- 27:29Speaker 1: hand do you right with? Raise that hand. You know,
- 27:32Speaker 1: you learn it by that, your dominant hand one way
- 27:35Speaker 1: or the other. But I know people who have a
- 27:37Speaker 1: hard time with right and left. Maybe Orlovsky's one of
- 27:39Speaker 1: those too. We know he's got a hard time with
- 27:41Speaker 1: up and back based on him running out of the
- 27:43Speaker 1: end zone for a save.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Exactly. And he'll be done more for this, which is funny. The–
- 27:48Speaker 2: But not knowing what it meant, meaning like one out
- 27:51Speaker 2: of 100, like 58 is out of 100. And how
- 27:54Speaker 2: many times he's used this or heard this throughout his career? JT,
- 27:57Speaker 2: do you have one? I'm curious if JT has one
- 27:59Speaker 2: of these. Mine was tie-tied with Rose's, the envelope.
- 28:03Speaker 6: There's nothing that really, really stands out. But I will
- 28:05Speaker 6: tell you, I'm the first to raise my hand. If
- 28:08Speaker 6: you guys need me to get you somewhere as far
- 28:11Speaker 6: as directions go, and I don't have, you know, Google Maps.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Don't let that rhyme.
- 28:17Speaker 6: Don't tell me you can say go to McDonald's and
- 28:20Speaker 6: turn left and then turn right at the first stop.
- 28:22Speaker 2: So I'm good.
- 28:23Speaker 6: But north, south, east, west, that kind of stuff. If
- 28:26Speaker 6: I was born, you know, 75 years ago and had
- 28:29Speaker 6: to use a map, we're screwed.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you're spot on. My in-laws and everything in Nebraska
- 28:36Speaker 1: is a big grid. So they have these sections of farms.
- 28:40Speaker 1: So everything's a square mile. So if you fly over
- 28:42Speaker 1: the state where you see the big squares, looks like
- 28:45Speaker 1: a quilt across the state. they always know what direction
- 28:49Speaker 1: everything is at all times. Um, it's like they have
- 28:51Speaker 1: a sundial with them at all times. Like that's North
- 28:54Speaker 1: of the shed or we headed.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 28:56Speaker 1: That's out East of Elgin or that's out South of here.
- 28:59Speaker 1: And I'm thinking, is it right or left? Am I
- 29:02Speaker 1: going straight or am I going behind me? Because when
- 29:04Speaker 1: I'm driving a certain direction, I can't tell. I'm not
- 29:07Speaker 1: looking up at the sun and telling you which direction
- 29:09Speaker 1: I'm going at any time, but because everything is so
- 29:13Speaker 1: straight lined across that state, there's, You know, 24, the
- 29:17Speaker 1: interstate in Middle Tennessee, goes southeast. And that drives people
- 29:21Speaker 1: from the Midwest crazy because it says 24 east, but
- 29:25Speaker 1: really it's southeast. There's nothing that's southeast in Nebraska. It
- 29:29Speaker 1: is straight north, true north, east, west, south. There's nothing
- 29:34Speaker 1: diagonally in that state. So everything that they're looking at,
- 29:37Speaker 1: they could be sitting in a room and telling you
- 29:39Speaker 1: which way. they're facing. I'm facing the north wall of
- 29:42Speaker 1: this house at any given time. It's crazy their sense
- 29:45Speaker 1: of direction compared, I think, to a lot of southerners.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Well, I mean, it did take me a while to
- 29:50Speaker 2: realize that the even numbers on interstates are east, west,
- 29:53Speaker 2: and odd are north, south. Yeah.
- 29:57Speaker 1: But that's natural. That's one that until someone tells you,
- 30:01Speaker 1: it's like, oh, yeah, now that makes sense. But I
- 30:04Speaker 1: don't think that's uncommon.
- 30:06Speaker 2: You mentioned the grid. You can see the grids of
- 30:08Speaker 2: all the interstates on a map. You get it. But
- 30:12Speaker 2: the highways, too, the numbers that those end in and
- 30:14Speaker 2: if it's going to connect or not connect back to
- 30:16Speaker 2: the main interstate is interesting. However they laid this out,
- 30:22Speaker 2: they knew the percentage perfectly. They knew what the percent was.
- 30:25Speaker 2: That's for sure.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Brooke says, growing up in the South, there are words
- 30:28Speaker 1: that were mispronounced so badly, and I don't regularly see
- 30:31Speaker 1: them spelled. I found out like two years ago that
- 30:34Speaker 1: it was window sill, S-I-L-L, not window seal, between the
- 30:40Speaker 1: two words. We've talked about pronunciations of like light E's
- 30:43Speaker 1: and everything with people from the South, and people get
- 30:46Speaker 1: on to me. They've gotten on to you about certain
- 30:48Speaker 1: words and how you pronounce it. I've always talked about
- 30:51Speaker 1: pen pen. Pen is pen. I can't do the P-I-N.
- 30:57Speaker 1: There's no difference between saying P-I-N and P-E-N. And when
- 31:00Speaker 1: people overpronounce pen, I think it sounds like pan, P-A-N.
- 31:05Speaker 1: So my pen, P-I-N, is the same as my pen, P-E-N.
- 31:10Speaker 1: And that drives people that aren't from the South, I think, crazy.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Here's one for you. I live next door to like
- 31:16Speaker 1: a gas station convenience store really close to my house.
- 31:20Speaker 1: I would pass every single day. And on the store,
- 31:23Speaker 1: Cook's Market, Cook's Star Market, underneath it, it would have,
- 31:27Speaker 1: you know, cold drinks, food, gas, fishing, S-U-P-P-L-I-E-S. I think
- 31:37Speaker 1: I was 17 years old when I realized what that
- 31:39Speaker 1: word said. My whole life, I just looked at it
- 31:44Speaker 1: and my mind said supplies.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Supplies? Supplies.
- 31:46Speaker 1: And I'm like, what are fishing suplees? Is this something
- 31:49Speaker 1: like bait that I don't know? Is this live bait
- 31:52Speaker 1: that they have? Is this type of fish that they use?
- 31:54Speaker 1: I mean, I thought that my entire life. Gas station
- 31:56Speaker 1: next to me. And one day it clicked probably as
- 31:58Speaker 1: I was going into high school. Oh, that says supplies.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Fishing supplies, that makes a lot more sense than suplees.
- 32:05Speaker 1: But that is the word that always goes to my mind.
- 32:08Speaker 1: What is that? I did not go Orlovsky and ask
- 32:11Speaker 1: someone even when I was a kid, hey, what is
- 32:13Speaker 1: that word that's on the sign there? I just looked
- 32:15Speaker 1: at it and thought it was suplees my whole life
- 32:17Speaker 1: and then realized, oh, dummy, it's supplies.
- 32:21Speaker 2: I do that with songs. I think an artist is
- 32:24Speaker 2: singing one word when it's been another word the entire time.
- 32:28Speaker 2: And then you hear it, you're like, oh, it is
- 32:29Speaker 2: that word. But in your mind, you hear a different
- 32:32Speaker 2: word your entire life. I've done that with all kinds
- 32:36Speaker 2: of artists. Jacob says he thought it was wash instead
- 32:40Speaker 2: of wash for the longest time just growing up here.
- 32:43Speaker 2: That's true.
- 32:45Speaker 1: That's the Kentucky in me. Well, in Nebraska, it's warsh.
- 32:49Speaker 1: That's a big thing. In the Midwest with certain states, too,
- 32:52Speaker 1: they'll say it the exact same way.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Well, it's areas of town here, areas of the state.
- 32:58Speaker 2: It's not Shelbyville Shovel. Like digging a ditch with a shovel.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Oh, it's not Santa Fe. It's Santa Fe.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Santa Fe.
- 33:05Speaker 1: There's a ton of them. Lebanon. I always say it,
- 33:09Speaker 1: Mount Juliet. It is not Mount Juliet. I go to
- 33:12Speaker 1: a workout class every day, and the lady that's not
- 33:15Speaker 1: from here who leads the class sometimes is like, all right,
- 33:17Speaker 1: welcome to such and such Mount Juliet. And every time
- 33:20Speaker 1: I want to correct her and say, honey, if you're
- 33:23Speaker 1: going to live here, understand that it's Mount Juliet. This
- 33:26Speaker 1: is not a Shakespeare play. It's not Romeo and Juliet.
- 33:28Speaker 1: It is Mount Juliet. If you're here. But yeah, those
- 33:31Speaker 1: pronunciations are common.
- 33:33Speaker 2: It's how you determine whether or not the meteorologist is
- 33:36Speaker 2: from the area or from outside the area when they're
- 33:38Speaker 2: new on one of those stations.
- 33:40Speaker 1: No doubt. And Brooke said, you know, his wife is
- 33:42Speaker 1: from New Jersey, so he's been crushed on pronunciations his
- 33:46Speaker 1: entire relationship with her. I'm the same way. People from
- 33:49Speaker 1: those states, too, they say things crazy also.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely.
- 33:52Speaker 1: No matter where you're from, you're saying something that makes
- 33:55Speaker 1: no sense. PK for years would not pronounce his H's.
- 33:59Speaker 2: It still does.
- 34:00Speaker 1: He says it's more efficient to say Houston than Houston,
- 34:03Speaker 1: but it's the exact same amount of time it takes
- 34:05Speaker 1: to say both. Houston, Houston. Can't say an H. Crazy pronunciations.
- 34:11Speaker 1: In Nebraska, everyone says cafe and not cafe.
- 34:14Speaker 5: Really?
- 34:15Speaker 1: Yeah, they're going to the cafe. It took me a while.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Where are you going, did you say? I'm going to
- 34:20Speaker 1: the cafe.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Do you say envelope or envelope?
- 34:23Speaker 1: I say envelope.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Me too. A lot of people say envelope. There's plenty
- 34:27Speaker 2: of those as well. You say pecan or pecan? Pecan.
- 34:31Speaker 1: I say pecan too. I think most people say pecan.
- 34:35Speaker 1: I've got a lot of half and half. There's some
- 34:39Speaker 1: words I say very southern, and then other ones I
- 34:41Speaker 1: would say the way most of the country says it.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Route or route?
- 34:44Speaker 1: Route.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Route. Yeah, I do that too because of Sonic. Route
- 34:48Speaker 2: 40 or Route 60, whatever it is, the 44, 66,
- 34:51Speaker 2: whatever they have.
- 34:52Speaker 1: I do it probably because of football. Like I think
- 34:54Speaker 1: of passing routes, you know, running a route. So that's
- 34:57Speaker 1: where my mind goes first. So I'll pronounce it route
- 34:59Speaker 1: for that reason.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Crazy. But we know Percept.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Well, it's funny though, when you say that, I do
- 35:07Speaker 1: say Route 66.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Route 66.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Because that's like in the song and that's the Sonic trick.
- 35:13Speaker 1: No one says give me a Route 66 route. you know,
- 35:16Speaker 1: coconut water or whatever they have there. Oh, ocean water.
- 35:19Speaker 1: That was my word back in the day in high
- 35:20Speaker 1: school was the ocean water, that blue coconut drink. Yeah,
- 35:24Speaker 1: they say Route 66. Coming up, overexposure. How much is
- 35:28Speaker 1: too much? We discussed that. Plus primary complaint just around

- 36:34Speaker 2: should put all the sharp money, right here with Hard
- 36:36Speaker 2: Rock Bet and on Sport and State. Jet, how much
- 36:40Speaker 2: is too much?
- 36:42Speaker 1: Yeah, JT sent us this, and it was a score
- 36:46Speaker 1: that was not very good between two club football teams.
- 36:49Speaker 1: I think it's Ohio State, and I'm guessing this is
- 36:53Speaker 1: flag football in Wright State with a 105-0 win. It
- 36:58Speaker 1: was 98-0 at halftime. At halftime? Yeah, flag football, I'm
- 37:06Speaker 1: guessing this is what this is or whatever it is.
- 37:08Speaker 1: It's a little bit different, but is there a threshold
- 37:12Speaker 1: of we get the point, just stop the game? Look,
- 37:16Speaker 1: there are two schools of thought here. One is don't
- 37:20Speaker 1: be a quitter. Don't ever quit. Don't ever give up.
- 37:24Speaker 1: You look like more of a wuss if you decide
- 37:27Speaker 1: enough is enough and this game should not be played
- 37:29Speaker 1: anymore because of the score being so lopsided or one
- 37:33Speaker 1: team being so much better.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Than the other one.
- 37:35Speaker 1: The other one is, what good are we doing here
- 37:39Speaker 1: if the score is that lopsided? Now, I think we're
- 37:42Speaker 1: talking about two college club teams in this thing, but
- 37:46Speaker 1: let's use high school examples because every week you're going
- 37:48Speaker 1: to find plenty of examples of teams winning 70-something to nothing,
- 37:51Speaker 1: 80-something to nothing, in the 60s to nothing. That old
- 37:57Speaker 1: adage of we get the point at some point of
- 38:00Speaker 1: these games. I've got a couple of examples. This season,
- 38:03Speaker 1: my daughter's small private school, Donaldson Christian Academy. They play
- 38:08Speaker 1: other small private schools. There are games where those other,
- 38:11Speaker 1: not DCA, but where the other teams don't have enough
- 38:13Speaker 1: players to play. Clarksville Academy is one school that rolled
- 38:17Speaker 1: in with, I think, 17 players total. I counted, I think,
- 38:21Speaker 1: five or six players on the sidelines. when they were
- 38:24Speaker 1: on the field. The game started with DCA returning the
- 38:27Speaker 1: kickoff for a touchdown. And I've never seen anyone kill
- 38:31Speaker 1: clock on a kickoff return, but they were able to
- 38:34Speaker 1: jog the last 50 yards and slow down and almost
- 38:37Speaker 1: like run patterns to kill clock as they ran in
- 38:40Speaker 1: the opening kickoff for a touchdown. It was like 42-0
- 38:44Speaker 1: at halftime. The other school asked to run the clock
- 38:47Speaker 1: as the game started to start the game at eight-minute quarters.
- 38:51Speaker 1: and a running clock before the game even started, knowing
- 38:54Speaker 1: how bad it was going to be. That's against TWSAA rules.
- 38:57Speaker 1: But at halftime of these games, you can set a
- 39:00Speaker 1: new clock. 35-0 is a running clock. We've had that
- 39:04Speaker 1: in our games this year sometimes. But 35-0, they're going
- 39:07Speaker 1: to roll the clock regardless. And just like in college,
- 39:09Speaker 1: I think Oregon did this earlier in the year where
- 39:12Speaker 1: a team elected to have a 10-minute or 12-minute or
- 39:15Speaker 1: whatever it was, third and fourth quarter of the game.
- 39:18Speaker 1: You can agree with the other coach if both sides
- 39:20Speaker 1: agree to change the clock in the second half. You
- 39:23Speaker 1: can't start a game with a change clock in the
- 39:25Speaker 1: first half but I don't know I just I watch
- 39:29Speaker 1: situations like that especially in high school football and I
- 39:32Speaker 1: think to myself boy I feel bad for everybody over
- 39:35Speaker 1: there just this whole experience I feel bad for the
- 39:37Speaker 1: parents in the stands I feel bad for the kids
- 39:39Speaker 1: on the field. I feel bad for that one coach
- 39:42Speaker 1: who's trying to coach the whole football team and do
- 39:45Speaker 1: everything on the sideline. It seems like a miserable experience.
- 39:48Speaker 2: It does. I also think it would be miserable if.
- 39:54Speaker 2: By the way, it was 99-0.5 is what that scoreboard said.
- 39:57Speaker 2: They ended up... They did take the knee because the
- 40:01Speaker 2: final score was like 106-0 or something. If you're scoring
- 40:06Speaker 2: that many by the half... That's where the running clock
- 40:10Speaker 2: and that was already started. Then you've got that second
- 40:13Speaker 2: half where you can take the, the other coach can
- 40:17Speaker 2: take the timing off the clock. It would be even
- 40:20Speaker 2: more insulting to me, Chad, if someone breaks away for
- 40:22Speaker 2: a touchdown and they just take the knee on like
- 40:25Speaker 2: the 20 instead of scoring. And they do that for
- 40:28Speaker 2: the rest of the game. That would be even more
- 40:29Speaker 2: insulting to me, knowing that it could be 105. They
- 40:33Speaker 2: can name their score and we still can't stop them.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Sometimes the team just can't stop them. That's the other
- 40:42Speaker 2: part of it, is the backups in the third string
- 40:44Speaker 2: still get it done against their team. It is rubbing
- 40:47Speaker 2: it in, but there are ways to do it without
- 40:49Speaker 2: rubbing it in. They're not going for the bundle, right?
- 40:51Speaker 2: They're not trying to go up top and go over
- 40:54Speaker 2: the top of the defense and really a one-play, two-play drive,
- 40:58Speaker 2: 58 yards and another score. Sometimes the other team just
- 41:01Speaker 2: has to stop. They have to make a tackle, even
- 41:04Speaker 2: if it is right up the middle. You know, 316
- 41:06Speaker 2: buck was our play. If we're just going to run
- 41:08Speaker 2: right between the tackles and just go straight ahead, full bore.
- 41:12Speaker 2: 316 buck. We ran it a lot. Not because we
- 41:14Speaker 2: were up, but because we were a wing T. But
- 41:17Speaker 2: that would be the play that I would run if
- 41:18Speaker 2: I'm up big and just run it right to the
- 41:20Speaker 2: heart of the defense and make them tackle us.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a humane way to mercy kill. another team
- 41:27Speaker 1: by just running it, taking the play clock all the
- 41:29Speaker 1: way down each and every snap, and not make it
- 41:33Speaker 1: even worse. Yeah, absolutely there are things you can do
- 41:37Speaker 1: to prevent something like that from happening. Maybe there's a
- 41:40Speaker 1: lot of bad blood between Ohio State and Wright State's
- 41:42Speaker 1: flag football club teams, and they were paying them back
- 41:45Speaker 1: for something in the past or something that was said online.
- 41:47Speaker 1: I don't know. But there are plenty of ways that
- 41:49Speaker 1: you can do it humanely. JT is the father of
- 41:53Speaker 1: a travel softball player now. JT, have you ever run
- 41:56Speaker 1: across a situation where your team's had to step off
- 41:59Speaker 1: bases or someone else has stepped off a base to
- 42:01Speaker 1: get it out automatically for you because the game is
- 42:04Speaker 1: so bad?
- 42:05Speaker 6: 17 to 4, or maybe 3, Saturday in the White House.
- 42:11Speaker 6: And we were on the bottom end of that. And
- 42:14Speaker 6: the runner at third left early on purpose because the
- 42:18Speaker 6: coach told him to get the third out.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Yeah. That's a fine line.
- 42:22Speaker 6: I mean, these kids are, you know, at that age,
- 42:24Speaker 6: you know, 10, 12, 9, these kids are trying to
- 42:27Speaker 6: learn how to play the game. If you're in college
- 42:31Speaker 6: or high school, maybe it's a different story.
- 42:33Speaker 1: I mean, we see it.
- 42:35Speaker 2: There's just a fine line. But I think 105 to nothing,
- 42:38Speaker 2: it's kind of pushing that. Is 17-4, is that considered
- 42:43Speaker 2: the mercy rule deal in travel softball? It's travel, too,
- 42:46Speaker 2: by the way.
- 42:47Speaker 1: No.
- 42:47Speaker 2: I'm doing it.
- 42:48Speaker 1: There is no mercy rule in travel. You can beat
- 42:51Speaker 1: anybody as much as you can in that time limit.
- 42:53Speaker 1: So it's all timed. So you only have so much
- 42:56Speaker 1: time to play. So it's either usually like 55 minutes
- 42:59Speaker 1: or an hour and 10 minutes, and it's either drop dead,
- 43:02Speaker 1: where in a warm-up game, if the clock ends, it's over.
- 43:05Speaker 1: So you always, if you win the toss, you want
- 43:07Speaker 1: to hit first because you might get more at-bats than
- 43:09Speaker 1: the other team, obviously. And then if you're in the bracket,
- 43:12Speaker 1: you want to hit last. You want to be the
- 43:14Speaker 1: home team because it's finish the inning. So you want
- 43:16Speaker 1: to have last licks at that point. But this is
- 43:19Speaker 1: more about if you're up. My daughter picked up with
- 43:23Speaker 1: a really good team on Sunday in Cookville, and they're
- 43:26Speaker 1: up like 11-0 in the first inning. Now, they eventually
- 43:30Speaker 1: got out of it on their own. But when you
- 43:33Speaker 1: get to 9, 10, 11, 12 runs in the first inning,
- 43:36Speaker 1: you've played 30, 40 minutes already. You want to give
- 43:39Speaker 1: the other team a chance to bat. So especially if
- 43:42Speaker 1: it's the top of the first, you might tell the umpire, hey,
- 43:44Speaker 1: she's going to leave the base early on a steal.
- 43:46Speaker 1: So that's what I mean by leaving the base early
- 43:48Speaker 1: is runners out, and then you just– you don't make
- 43:51Speaker 1: a big scene of it. Everybody just runs their dugout.
- 43:53Speaker 1: It's like, okay, the inning's over miraculously because they left
- 43:57Speaker 1: the base early. That's what you call to help. That's
- 44:00Speaker 1: like your cross-buck play to run the clock. That's what
- 44:04Speaker 1: you do to help out the other team. I remember
- 44:06Speaker 1: the first 10U tournament I coached, and that's in kid pitch.
- 44:10Speaker 1: that I knew people would step off the base. But
- 44:13Speaker 1: I asked the umpire, because we were up 7-0 or
- 44:15Speaker 1: something in the first inning of the second game we
- 44:17Speaker 1: ever played. And I said, hey, when would I step
- 44:21Speaker 1: off the base? And the guy's like, what's the score?
- 44:23Speaker 1: I don't know. And I'm like, it's 6-7-0. He's like,
- 44:25Speaker 1: not yet. I mean, he's like, I'd wait until at
- 44:28Speaker 1: least 10 or at least until you bat through, you know,
- 44:31Speaker 1: a time and a half, right? Like if you get
- 44:33Speaker 1: back to your fourth batter and all the way through
- 44:35Speaker 1: your lineup one time, then yeah, go ahead and consider
- 44:38Speaker 1: stepping off the base at some point, but not until then.
- 44:41Speaker 2: JT, I would also say, as a parent, if I'm watching,
- 44:45Speaker 2: and I think Chad would agree, if you're down big,
- 44:47Speaker 2: as the opponent, I would like to take the foot
- 44:50Speaker 2: off the gas a bit and allow my team to
- 44:52Speaker 2: improve by trying to hit the ball, trying to work
- 44:55Speaker 2: on fundamentals. That way, you improve while also taking the
- 44:59Speaker 2: big L, even though the game's over. Take advantage of
- 45:02Speaker 2: the time left. I think that would be also a
- 45:05Speaker 2: way to take advantage of some things.
- 45:08Speaker 6: 17-3 doesn't benefit anybody except the kid's ego that's got
- 45:12Speaker 6: 17 runs.
- 45:14Speaker 2: It's not good.
- 45:15Speaker 1: As Chad said, you let the other kids bat and
- 45:17Speaker 1: get some reps.
- 45:18Speaker 2: That's what they're there for.
- 45:20Speaker 1: It's a confidence boost. All it is is, oh, I'm
- 45:22Speaker 1: glad that team feels good about themselves after that game
- 45:25Speaker 1: because they really hit the ball well and they got
- 45:27Speaker 1: some confidence. JT, you'll see more and more of this too.
- 45:30Speaker 1: You'll see teams take bunting practice on you. They know
- 45:34Speaker 1: they've got a huge advantage. We're playing some older teams
- 45:36Speaker 1: and You know, we're playing some girls who look like
- 45:38Speaker 1: they drove to the park each week. And my daughter's
- 45:42Speaker 1: 87 pounds, you know, and pitching and is 11 years
- 45:45Speaker 1: old against some of them. And they'll start the game
- 45:48Speaker 1: where they'll all bat left and slap. Like you'll face
- 45:52Speaker 1: like seven straight slap bunts where they're working on slapping
- 45:55Speaker 1: or they're working on bunting to get on base or
- 45:57Speaker 1: they'll get a lead and they'll start trying to bunt
- 46:00Speaker 1: every single time, which depending on the team, if they're
- 46:01Speaker 1: good at it, they're still going to get on base
- 46:04Speaker 1: doing that also. But there's a lot of ways. And
- 46:06Speaker 1: I've coached in games where I'm like, yeah, I'm going
- 46:08Speaker 1: to call a bunt over and over because I want
- 46:10Speaker 1: to work on it when you get a good enough
- 46:13Speaker 1: lead on something. So there are ways to work on
- 46:16Speaker 1: things without demeaning the opponent. There is a fine balance, though,
- 46:21Speaker 1: of doing that without patronizing your opponent and the other
- 46:24Speaker 1: coach and the other team.
- 46:25Speaker 2: What age group do you guys think is the right
- 46:27Speaker 2: age group to stop doing it? That would be my
- 46:30Speaker 2: other thing is like, If we're doing something in college,
- 46:34Speaker 2: I don't know if we need– I'm saying anything. I
- 46:36Speaker 2: don't know if we need the mercy rule, quote, unquote.
- 46:38Speaker 1: I mean college. Yeah. You know, like in college, if
- 46:41Speaker 1: you want to pound some team in college softball, you
- 46:44Speaker 1: do it all day and just get through the minimum
- 46:46Speaker 1: innings to have the mercy rule called because there is
- 46:48Speaker 1: a mercy rule in those games also. You know, high
- 46:52Speaker 1: school even, I've seen high school softball or baseball games
- 46:55Speaker 1: where one team is just clearly outmatched, and what you
- 46:57Speaker 1: do is you pitch your fifth pitcher. You may start
- 47:01Speaker 1: your ace, and then after one inning, you're up 9-0
- 47:04Speaker 1: and say, all right, we're going to get somebody else
- 47:06Speaker 1: some work, and you get them in there to pitch
- 47:08Speaker 1: the game. That's another way to do it.
- 47:10Speaker 2: It's also easier based on sport. In basketball, four-corner stall.
- 47:14Speaker 2: You just run the clock. Far easier to do it
- 47:17Speaker 2: in basketball compared to other sports. Football, more difficult, especially
- 47:22Speaker 2: if you're just going to hand off and you've got
- 47:23Speaker 2: the guy running. A third-string running back is– going to score.
- 47:28Speaker 2: It's going to be his, his, his one touchdown of
- 47:29Speaker 2: the season. Probably JT.
- 47:34Speaker 6: Yeah. So there's a good question there because MTSU hosted
- 47:38Speaker 6: Tennessee and saw Paul a couple of weekends ago and
- 47:41Speaker 6: we went, my, my now 10 year old asked the question,
- 47:46Speaker 6: why do they beat them 24 to one? I mean,
- 47:50Speaker 6: now you're looking at some, some kids that have to
- 47:52Speaker 6: watch two teams that they respect and it's a 23
- 47:56Speaker 6: run game. So I said, that's softball, Cal.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Was that Tennessee winning 24-1? Yes, sir.
- 48:03Speaker 2: At MTSU.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Well, I knew a girl that's a freshman there who's
- 48:07Speaker 1: from Mount Juliet who I think played in that game.
- 48:09Speaker 1: She's not going to play much this season, I don't think,
- 48:11Speaker 1: as a true freshman. She played a lot in that
- 48:13Speaker 1: game and I think hit a home run, in fact. So, yeah,
- 48:16Speaker 1: I mean, Catfish Jake is a great example. He said,
- 48:19Speaker 1: I worked out-of-bound lines at my daughter's high school volleyball games.
- 48:23Speaker 1: I would purposefully make the wrong call on a ball
- 48:26Speaker 1: in or out in a blowout. And he said, I
- 48:28Speaker 1: would take the point away from my daughter specifically. So
- 48:31Speaker 1: if his team was killing the other team so bad,
- 48:33Speaker 1: he would give them a call here or there. JT,
- 48:36Speaker 1: I know you've seen this. This happened Sunday, too, where
- 48:39Speaker 1: my daughter got called out at second on a force
- 48:42Speaker 1: play where, I mean, she slid in two seconds early.
- 48:45Speaker 1: And the umpire, that's what got them out of the inning.
- 48:47Speaker 1: It was 11-0 in the first, and the umpire's coming in, whoop,
- 48:51Speaker 1: got her right there. I'm like, that's a mercy killing.
- 48:54Speaker 1: And I had no problem with it. The umpire at
- 48:56Speaker 1: that point is like, we want to let them hit.
- 48:58Speaker 1: So that's the umpire showing some mercy to the other
- 49:03Speaker 1: team and just calling a crazy call to get out
- 49:06Speaker 1: of the inning because the team that my daughter was
- 49:08Speaker 1: on was not going to step off a base. So
- 49:10Speaker 1: that's the way they stepped off a base for the
- 49:12Speaker 1: other team and called it wild.
- 49:16Speaker 2: JT, if you want to teach your daughter, just have
- 49:18Speaker 2: her watch some NBA games now, if you want to
- 49:20Speaker 2: see some blowouts. Why do they beat the 100 to 50?
- 49:23Speaker 2: You'll get that easily.
- 49:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that would look like a fun event, too, that
- 49:28Speaker 1: you went to for that.
- 49:29Speaker 2: It's packed, right?
- 49:30Speaker 1: It's a parking garage, right? Oh, yeah.
- 49:32Speaker 6: NTSU, yeah, they had no– I mean, probably the biggest
- 49:34Speaker 6: crowd they've ever had there, ever.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Had to be.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:37Speaker 2: It was– yeah, we literally watched the game.
- 49:39Speaker 6: We got there an hour and a half early and
- 49:42Speaker 6: could not get– had no seats. So, shout-out MTSU for
- 49:46Speaker 6: having a big crowd. Shout-out for everybody that supports the
- 49:49Speaker 6: Lady Vols that were there as well.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Yeah, plenty of them, I'm sure. That was great. I
- 49:54Speaker 2: hope they play every year.
- 49:55Speaker 1: And it's fall ball. Like, it's crazy to see the crowds.
- 49:57Speaker 1: I know Tennessee baseball has kind of barnstormed. I think
- 50:01Speaker 1: First Tennessee Park, they played in Jackson– In the minor
- 50:04Speaker 1: league park there, they go across the state and play
- 50:07Speaker 1: some fall ball games, and a lot of people go.
- 50:08Speaker 2: It's awesome.
- 50:09Speaker 1: In all these places for fall baseball. Brooks says, I
- 50:12Speaker 1: will call out the coaching staff on air if I
- 50:13Speaker 1: feel like the other team is running up the score.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Called a game last week where the team was up
- 50:17Speaker 1: four touchdowns in the fourth quarter and still had the
- 50:19Speaker 1: first team in passing. I've been known to do that, too.
- 50:22Speaker 1: We've had a game where I've questioned– why a coach is,
- 50:25Speaker 1: you know, taking a shot late in the game. In fact,
- 50:29Speaker 1: I did it at my daughter's school. The guy, the
- 50:32Speaker 1: offensive coordinator, didn't like it too much and looked over
- 50:35Speaker 1: at me and kind of rolled his eyes. And I'm thinking,
- 50:37Speaker 1: you're up 21 points with four minutes left. We're going
- 50:40Speaker 1: play action, throwing it deep, you know, out of your
- 50:43Speaker 1: own end zone. I don't know the purpose of any
- 50:46Speaker 1: of that. And if the thing is I'm going to
- 50:48Speaker 1: get some work in, well, then make sure all your
- 50:51Speaker 1: backups are in. As Brooke said, if you've got your
- 50:54Speaker 1: first team in doing that, if you've got a freshman
- 50:57Speaker 1: quarterback in college even, I do like it when the
- 51:01Speaker 1: coaches let them run the offense a little bit.
- 51:03Speaker 2: You have to.
- 51:04Speaker 1: You get in with nine minutes left in a game,
- 51:06Speaker 1: you're up 42. What's the difference between 42 and 49?
- 51:11Speaker 1: I let the third string run the offense. You don't
- 51:14Speaker 1: have to just hand it off to that. As long
- 51:16Speaker 1: as the backups are in the game, you're likely playing
- 51:18Speaker 1: against other backups at that point also. I've got no
- 51:20Speaker 1: issue with that, but If you keep your first team
- 51:23Speaker 1: in and you're killing somebody and you're throwing deep, yeah,
- 51:26Speaker 1: that's a low-class move.
- 51:28Speaker 2: And with the backups, the team that's getting blown out,
- 51:30Speaker 2: they're going to get better work because it's a more
- 51:32Speaker 2: same-caliber type player closer to it than the five stars
- 51:36Speaker 2: that are going against, in college, going against the guys
- 51:40Speaker 2: that are playing at UTC or MTSU. I think that's
- 51:47Speaker 2: a mercy way to do it, but also good for
- 51:49Speaker 2: both teams in a way. Coming up, primary complaint. Chad
- 51:55Speaker 2: and I were told something about primary complaint that we're
- 51:58Speaker 2: bringing back. And it was a compliment to JT as well.
- 52:02Speaker 2: We'll tell JT on the other side here on Hutton
- 52:04Speaker 2: and Withrow.
