Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / #HURDLEMOMENT: 5 Important Lessons I Learned Training for 9 Marathons
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: You have survived one hundred percent of the really really tough, hard, difficult,
- 0:06Speaker 1: annoying days in the past, which means that if they
- 0:09Speaker 1: keep coming at you, and I hate to be the
- 0:12Speaker 1: one to tell you this, but they will, that you
- 0:15Speaker 1: can handle those two.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Hey, Hurdler's Emily a body here.
- 0:32Speaker 1: You are listening to another installment of a hurdle moment
- 0:36Speaker 1: from Hurdle. What's going on everyone? It is Tuesday as
- 0:41Speaker 1: I'm recording this, and I am feeling oddly at peace
- 0:49Speaker 1: with just the state of where I'm at right now
- 0:53Speaker 1: in that I am in the middle of a build
- 0:58Speaker 1: up from marathon training and a little new development for
- 1:03Speaker 1: all of you. Last week, I agreed to a BIB
- 1:09Speaker 1: opportunity of sorts we'll call it, to run the New
- 1:12Speaker 1: York Marathon with my friends at Strava.
- 1:15Speaker 2: So super excited about this.
- 1:17Speaker 1: That means that as of now I've got to twenty
- 1:20Speaker 1: six point two my whole races on deck for the fall.
- 1:24Speaker 1: First comes London on October third, and then it comes
- 1:28Speaker 1: to New York on November seventh. Kind of sitting here
- 1:31Speaker 1: praying that all just goes smoothly with London. But as
- 1:34Speaker 1: we all know, over the last fourteen, sixteen, eighteen months
- 1:38Speaker 1: of our lives, there have been a lot of things
- 1:40Speaker 1: that have been very unpredictable. So I am just kind
- 1:44Speaker 1: of doing the best I can with what I have
- 1:47Speaker 1: and going along with a training program as though I
- 1:52Speaker 1: am running London, and then I will make some modifications
- 1:56Speaker 1: and do a little more running between London and New York.
- 2:00Speaker 1: And that's it anyway, all of this rambling because today's
- 2:04Speaker 1: installment of Parnel Moment, I am bringing you the biggest
- 2:08Speaker 1: lessons that I have learned in training for to date
- 2:13Speaker 1: nine marathons, but come November seventh, eleven total marathons, which
- 2:19Speaker 1: just blows my mind every time I say it out loud.
- 2:22Speaker 2: As many of you who are.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Listening to this show know that, whether you are a
- 2:28Speaker 1: marathoner or not, the lessons that we learn on the
- 2:33Speaker 1: move can be just so applicable to so many different
- 2:36Speaker 1: aspects of our lives. And I can say that without
- 2:40Speaker 1: a doubt. Believing in myself to start off and run
- 2:45Speaker 1: that first half mile so many years ago and then
- 2:50Speaker 1: follow through and continue to lace up and believe that
- 2:54Speaker 1: I had more in the tank and more to give.
- 2:57Speaker 1: That experience has forever made me a better human being.
- 3:01Speaker 1: It's empowered me in just every every single way, and
- 3:06Speaker 1: it's something that I'm generally grateful for. So whether or
- 3:09Speaker 1: not you want to run, whether or not running your thing,
- 3:11Speaker 1: it doesn't matter. Today's episode, I promise is applicable to you.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I'm so grateful for your time and your ears and
- 3:20Speaker 1: that you're a part of my community.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I threw this kind of shout.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Out into the wind last week, but for many many reasons,
- 3:27Speaker 1: I would love it right now if you, while listening
- 3:30Speaker 1: to this episode, wouldn't mind rating and reviewing the show
- 3:34Speaker 1: wherever you listen to your podcasts. It's super important for
- 3:38Speaker 1: Hurdle to get on the charts and to get noticed
- 3:41Speaker 1: and for more people to find the show and become
- 3:45Speaker 1: part of our community, which is really really special. If
- 3:47Speaker 1: you're not following along with Hurdle on socially yet, it's
- 3:50Speaker 1: over at Hurdle podcast. I'm over at Emily Body. And
- 3:54Speaker 1: with that, let's get to hurdling. I was sitting here
- 4:10Speaker 1: trying to think about where I was in my life
- 4:16Speaker 1: when I decided to run my first full marathon, and
- 4:19Speaker 1: actually it was I did it in twenty thirteen. My
- 4:23Speaker 1: first full marathon was the Hartford Marathon and the year
- 4:29Speaker 1: before I had moved to New York City. I remember
- 4:35Speaker 1: like the staple run of that training cycle would be
- 4:39Speaker 1: this four mile kind of out and back that I
- 4:43Speaker 1: would do from my second ever apartment actually some complications
- 4:50Speaker 1: with the first one, and it would take me from
- 4:53Speaker 1: my apartment up to the entrance of Central Park on
- 4:57Speaker 1: the east side at what is called Engineer's at ninetieth Street,
- 5:01Speaker 1: and then I would run back home. Want to train
- 5:05Speaker 1: for that marathon, I basically just did one type of running,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and that was base smileage running. So there was no
- 5:11Speaker 1: such thing as like a tempo workout for me, or
- 5:14Speaker 1: an interval workout or whatever. Like all I would do
- 5:18Speaker 1: is just like go out and run and not think
- 5:20Speaker 1: about pace. And then on the weekends I would run
- 5:22Speaker 1: long and I followed like Hal hig didn't plan from
- 5:25Speaker 1: the Internet. For those of you who don't know who
- 5:27Speaker 1: Hal Higden is, he is an American writer and runner.
- 5:31Speaker 1: He's the author of a hell of a lot of books,
- 5:33Speaker 1: and if you google marathon training plan his are probably
- 5:38Speaker 1: the first ones to pop up.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I digress.
- 5:42Speaker 1: None of this really has to do with lessons that
- 5:44Speaker 1: I necessarily have learned in my training in the sense
- 5:48Speaker 1: that the lessons that I want to bring to you
- 5:49Speaker 1: today can be, as I referenced in the intro, kind
- 5:53Speaker 1: of more appicable to life as a whole.
- 5:55Speaker 2: But it is.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Interesting for me to reflect and think about where I
- 5:59Speaker 1: am now versus where I was then and how I mean.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I was just trying to do some quick math, but
- 6:04Speaker 1: math isn't always my strong suit. I ran my first
- 6:07Speaker 1: marathon on twenty thirteen. It's twenty twenty one, which means
- 6:10Speaker 1: that it's been eight years, and a lot can happen
- 6:13Speaker 1: in eight years. I am a completely different person now.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I've learned a hell of a lot in my life,
- 6:20Speaker 1: not just from running, but large in part because of running.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Running kind of opened the door for me in my
- 6:27Speaker 1: journey of you know, personal development and every way from
- 6:32Speaker 1: you know, my career to my personal life. It's just
- 6:34Speaker 1: been such an unlock for me to really value me
- 6:37Speaker 1: and my potential and what I have to offer.
- 6:39Speaker 2: And I'm really really grateful for that.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Okay, so now that I've kind of rambled on for
- 6:44Speaker 1: a little bit, I want to talk to about the
- 6:45Speaker 1: lessons that my training has taught me. First of all,
- 6:50Speaker 1: patients is a must if you're like me right now,
- 6:55Speaker 1: you are going out on the regular and training for
- 6:58Speaker 1: a marathon, and this can be really frustrating because there
- 7:04Speaker 1: are good days and there are bad days, and especially
- 7:07Speaker 1: in the summer when it is muggy as all hell,
- 7:11Speaker 1: we often feel as though the bad days are constant
- 7:16Speaker 1: and persistent and like they're never going to end.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:20Speaker 1: The thing is is that every year, when I find myself,
- 7:23Speaker 1: you know, gearing up for another marathon because maybe I'm
- 7:26Speaker 1: a little bit of a masochist, I remember and remind
- 7:30Speaker 1: myself that these frustrating stretches of days in the training come,
- 7:38Speaker 1: and every single time, when I get to the marathon,
- 7:42Speaker 1: I see that hard work pay off. And I don't
- 7:46Speaker 1: want to insinuate that hard work paying off is necessarily
- 7:49Speaker 1: getting a faster time while you're out there running, But
- 7:54Speaker 1: it's just the fact that you can toe the line
- 7:56Speaker 1: and show up and do it.
- 7:58Speaker 2: That's your hard work paying off.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Right. The hard work is in the process. It's showing
- 8:04Speaker 1: up day in and day out when the runs feel difficult,
- 8:07Speaker 1: when the days feel hard. And again, I mean talking
- 8:10Speaker 1: about a life practical application scenario here, how important is
- 8:15Speaker 1: it that as the hurdle moments happen in our lives,
- 8:20Speaker 1: and the tough days may feel as though they're super
- 8:23Speaker 1: persistent that we keep showing up. Because here's the deal.
- 8:28Speaker 1: You have survived one hundred percent of the really really tough, hard, difficult,
- 8:34Speaker 1: annoying days in the past, which means that if they
- 8:37Speaker 1: keep coming at you, and I hate to be the
- 8:40Speaker 1: one to tell you this, but they will, that you
- 8:43Speaker 1: can handle those two. So lesson number one in training,
- 8:47Speaker 1: patience is key, trust the process and keep hurdling. You know.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Lesson number two, there is always going to be someone
- 8:57Speaker 1: that is faster, or better or god stronger than you.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Maybe not if you're like the world's.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Fastest man, like I recently spoke with Hussein Bolt for GQ.
- 9:08Speaker 2: But here's the deal.
- 9:10Speaker 1: You have to run your own race again while you're
- 9:14Speaker 1: actually running, while you're not actually running.
- 9:17Speaker 2: You are the.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Only person that is on your journey, and you are
- 9:21Speaker 1: the author of your own stories. So if you're spending
- 9:26Speaker 1: all of your time worrying and comparing yourself to other people,
- 9:30Speaker 1: whether you know them irl or if this is like
- 9:32Speaker 1: a social media thing, then you're wasting your time.
- 9:37Speaker 2: You have to take charge.
- 9:40Speaker 1: You have to focus on you and sometimes I get
- 9:43Speaker 1: it that can feel a little bit selfish, right, It's hard.
- 9:47Speaker 1: I'm certainly someone who identifies as a giver, just like
- 9:51Speaker 1: I identify as a runner. It can be hard to be
- 9:55Speaker 1: quote unquote selfish or feel like you're being selfish by
- 9:58Speaker 1: taking the time to focus on yourself. But I think
- 10:03Speaker 1: it was Tunday oyen Ain who said this on the show.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Self care isn't selfish. In fact, self care is what
- 10:10Speaker 1: empowers you to show up day in and day out,
- 10:13Speaker 1: not only for yourself, but for the people you care about.
- 10:18Speaker 1: And that is so, so so important. Taking a break
- 10:31Speaker 1: from today's episode to talk to you about my sponsor
- 10:35Speaker 1: at Element. Element is an electrolyte drink mix with everything
- 10:39Speaker 1: you need and nothing you don't.
- 10:41Speaker 2: It's got no.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Sugar, no artificial ingredients, no fillers, and right now, especially
- 10:48Speaker 1: in the summer, I cannot hype this stuff up enough
- 10:52Speaker 1: because proper hydration is critical for optimizing mental and physical performance,
- 10:58Speaker 1: and hydration is not just about drinking enough water. To
- 11:01Speaker 1: stay properly hydrated, you need to consume adequate electrolytes. They
- 11:06Speaker 1: help your nerve, impulses, fire, they help regulate fluid balance,
- 11:10Speaker 1: and plus they also help produce energy and support strong
- 11:15Speaker 1: bones when we sweat. Replacing lost sodium is essential to
- 11:19Speaker 1: feeling and performing your best, and for me, this is
- 11:22Speaker 1: where Element comes in the clutch. It is my favorite
- 11:26Speaker 1: to bring with me on long bike rides. I just
- 11:30Speaker 1: tackled one last week that was super gnarly and made
- 11:32Speaker 1: me feel like a total beginner again. And they have
- 11:36Speaker 1: so many great flavors. I'm huge on their newest one,
- 11:40Speaker 1: their watermelon salt, but they've also got tastes for every
- 11:44Speaker 1: style from raspberry to orange, raw, unflavored citrus, so many options. Now,
- 11:51Speaker 1: of course I have an awesome opportunity for you. It's
- 11:54Speaker 1: a no brainer. Head on over to drink Element dot com.
- 11:57Speaker 1: That's dri nk l m ANDT dot com slash Hurdle

- 12:21Speaker 1: drink Element dot com d r I n k l
- 12:25Speaker 1: m nt dot com slash Hurdle.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Lesson number three.
- 12:37Speaker 1: If I can do X, then I will be able
- 12:40Speaker 1: to do Why let me explain how many times have
- 12:44Speaker 1: I been out there in my training on one of
- 12:46Speaker 1: those awful hot days that I referenced before, and I
- 12:50Speaker 1: just told myself.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I broke it up into smaller, little doables.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I thought to myself, all right, if you can just
- 12:55Speaker 1: make it for the next ten minutes, all right, If
- 12:57Speaker 1: you can just make it for the next one mile,
- 13:00Speaker 1: all right, if you can just make it for the
- 13:01Speaker 1: next you get the idea. These moments where we kind
- 13:05Speaker 1: of like bargain with ourselves, they are a reminder of
- 13:09Speaker 1: our own tenacity. They are a reminder what happens when
- 13:13Speaker 1: you find that self belief. In Carly Lloyd's episode and
- 13:17Speaker 1: everything I mentioned in this on the hurdle Front, so
- 13:20Speaker 1: to speak, I'll make sure to throw into the show
- 13:22Speaker 1: notes so you guys can click and check them out easily.
- 13:24Speaker 1: But Calie Lloyd said it best like self belief is
- 13:29Speaker 1: your north star. And if you don't have self belief,
- 13:32Speaker 1: if you don't believe firmly in what you are capable of,
- 13:35Speaker 1: then you cannot expect others to get on board. So
- 13:40Speaker 1: if I can make it through X, then I can
- 13:42Speaker 1: get to why again that idea, you have navigated all
- 13:46Speaker 1: the hard days up until now, and you can continue
- 13:49Speaker 1: to navigate them going forward. So believe that with every
- 13:54Speaker 1: step forward and notice I said forward, because every day
- 13:58Speaker 1: is a step in the right direction, trust that you
- 14:01Speaker 1: can show up and keep persisting. Lesson number four, there's
- 14:07Speaker 1: nothing more valuable than finding your right fit end period done.
- 14:12Speaker 1: And what I mean by this is your own fit
- 14:15Speaker 1: in the clothing that you like to wear, your own
- 14:18Speaker 1: fit in what nutrition you like to use on the run.
- 14:21Speaker 1: By finding these as I like to refer to them
- 14:23Speaker 1: goldilocks parts of my routine, it empowers me to show
- 14:28Speaker 1: up better and do what I love to do.
- 14:30Speaker 2: So in a real life application here.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Finding your right fit could be surrounding yourself with the
- 14:36Speaker 1: right people, or perhaps finding a way to make your
- 14:41Speaker 1: passion your work. And I have a hurdle session on
- 14:43Speaker 1: this which I'll link in the show notes. But when
- 14:46Speaker 1: you take the time to find the right stuff to
- 14:49Speaker 1: invest in yourself, to sort out all the kinks, so
- 14:53Speaker 1: to speak, then it's going to make your day to
- 14:56Speaker 1: day a little more seamless and a little easier. Me
- 15:00Speaker 1: I'm a morning workout person and I have for example,
- 15:04Speaker 1: narrowed down exactly what shorts I like to run in,
- 15:07Speaker 1: exactly what sports bras I like to run in, exactly
- 15:09Speaker 1: what sneakers I'll use for a base workout versus a
- 15:12Speaker 1: tempo workout versus a god interval workout, so I know
- 15:15Speaker 1: what to reach for, so those mornings feel a little
- 15:18Speaker 1: less daunting. So investing in yourself and finding the right
- 15:22Speaker 1: fit can make all of the difference because it makes
- 15:27Speaker 1: it easier for you to show up, for you to
- 15:30Speaker 1: do what you want to do, and for you to
- 15:32Speaker 1: excel in what you want to do. And the last
- 15:36Speaker 1: lesson I'm going to throw it into the mix here today,
- 15:38Speaker 1: remember to celebrate your small wins. If you don't take
- 15:41Speaker 1: a moment to celebrate you, then you're missing the point.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:44Speaker 1: If you're continually pushing and pushing and pushing it, don't
- 15:47Speaker 1: take your moment to recognize your hard work, then you're
- 15:50Speaker 1: going to get a little bit lost. You owe it
- 15:52Speaker 1: to yourself when you're putting in effort to something, to
- 15:55Speaker 1: be proud of you, because that moment where you kind
- 16:01Speaker 1: of take a step back and you pat yourself on
- 16:03Speaker 1: the back, that's what it's about. Right.
- 16:07Speaker 2: You are learning during the journey.
- 16:09Speaker 1: And if you're only celebrating at that finish line, then
- 16:13Speaker 1: especially I mean my marathoners can relate, you're missing the point.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Do it on your own, do it with a friend,
- 16:19Speaker 1: do it with your family, do it.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Over zoom, do it at a bar.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Wherever you do it right, be proud of you, And
- 16:27Speaker 1: it can be for anything. It can be for the
- 16:29Speaker 1: fact that you got out of bed, or perhaps you
- 16:31Speaker 1: put on real clothes for the day, hard pants. Find
- 16:34Speaker 1: the gratitude in the smaller moments and you'll find more
- 16:39Speaker 1: appreciation for your entire life.
- 16:42Speaker 2: These are just.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Five of the lessons that I've learned over my marathon
- 16:45Speaker 1: training for nine and soon to be ten and eleven marathons.
- 16:50Speaker 1: But trust me, endless, endless lessons I've learned on the run,
- 16:54Speaker 1: and I feel eternally grateful that I have the opportunity
- 16:57Speaker 1: to share them with all of you. If you have
- 16:59Speaker 1: any questions about running about marathoning, the perfect place for
- 17:04Speaker 1: you to ask me them is by leaving me a
- 17:07Speaker 1: voice message. You can do that by clicking the link
- 17:10Speaker 1: to the show notes. There's a link right there that
- 17:12Speaker 1: says leave me a voice message. It'll take you just
- 17:14Speaker 1: a few seconds, and I promise you your question will get
- 17:18Speaker 1: answered on an upcoming episode of Hurdle.
- 17:22Speaker 2: That's it for this week.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Make sure you're following along on social at Hurdle podcast,
- 17:26Speaker 1: at Emily a Body, Another hurdle conquered.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time.
