- 0:11Hello, hello, hello friends, it's Sean here and it's Tuesday,
- 0:16it's the 3rd of February and I am so delighted to have your
- 0:21company as we are embarking on a whole New Year's Bible reading.
- 0:27If you have been wondering how what are we going to be reading
- 0:30this year? Each day you can download the
- 0:33the annual Bible Reading plan which is in the show notes and
- 0:37it's a new one starting this week taking us through oh man,
- 0:41so many great books from the New and the Old Testament as we
- 0:45continue this journey, not trying to nail the Bible cover
- 0:48to cover, but instead moving through God's word book by book
- 0:54to punctuate each of our days spending time in God's Word.
- 0:58And today is no exception. And today is a glorious day
- 1:02because today Luke tells us about Jesus resurrection and his
- 1:07ministry even after his resurrection and then finally
- 1:11his ascension. Oh, what a banger.
- 1:13Let's dive into it. Holy Spirit, thank you for your
- 1:17word and open our hearts to you as we read this today.
- 1:23All right, friends, let us read together Luke chapter 24.
- 1:36But very early on Sunday morning, the women went to the
- 1:39tomb. Taking the spices they had
- 1:41prepared. They found that the stone had
- 1:44been rolled away from the entrance.
- 1:46So they went in, but they didn't find the body of the Lord Jesus.
- 1:50As they stood there puzzled, 2 men suddenly appeared to them,
- 1:54clothed in dazzling robes. The women were terrified and
- 1:58bowed with their faces to the ground.
- 2:00Then the men asked, Why are you looking among the dead for
- 2:04someone who is alive? He isn't here.
- 2:07He is risen from the dead. Remember what he told you back
- 2:11in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands
- 2:15of sinful men and be crucified, and that he would rise again on
- 2:20the third day. Then they remembered that he had
- 2:25said this, so they rushed back from the tomb to tell his 11
- 2:28disciples and everyone else what had happened.
- 2:32It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and
- 2:36several other women who told the apostles what had happened.
- 2:40But the story sounded like nonsense to the men, so they
- 2:43didn't believe it. However, Peter jumped up and ran
- 2:46to the tomb to look. Stooping, he peered in and saw
- 2:51the empty linen wrappings. Then he went home again,
- 2:55wondering what had happened. That same day, 2 of Jesus
- 3:00followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, 7 miles from
- 3:03Jerusalem. As they walked along they were
- 3:06talking about everything that had happened.
- 3:08As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself
- 3:12suddenly came and began walking with them.
- 3:15But God kept them from recognising him.
- 3:17He asked them, What are you discussing so intently as you
- 3:21walk along? They stopped short, sadness
- 3:25written across their faces. Then one of them, Cleopas,
- 3:28replied, You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn't
- 3:33heard about all these things that have happened there the
- 3:36last few days. What things, Jesus asked.
- 3:40The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth.
- 3:43They said he was a prophet who did powerful miracles and he was
- 3:48a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people.
- 3:52But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed
- 3:55him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him.
- 4:00We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel.
- 4:04This all happened three days ago.
- 4:07Then some women from our group of his followers were at his
- 4:11tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing
- 4:14report. They said his body was missing
- 4:18and they had seen angels who told him Jesus is alive.
- 4:22Some of our men ran out to see and sure enough his body was
- 4:26gone, just as the women had said.
- 4:29And Jesus said to them, You foolish people, you find it so
- 4:34hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the
- 4:37Scriptures. Wasn't it clearly predicted that
- 4:40the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering
- 4:44his glory? Then Jesus took them through the
- 4:47writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all
- 4:51the scriptures the things concerning Himself.
- 4:54By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their
- 4:58journey. Jesus act as if he were going
- 5:00on, but they begged him stay the night with us since it's getting
- 5:04late. So he went home with them, and
- 5:07as they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it.
- 5:10Then he broke it and gave it to them.
- 5:13Suddenly their eyes were opened and they recognised him.
- 5:16And at that moment he disappeared.
- 5:20They said to each other, Didn't our hearts burn within us as he
- 5:24talked with us on the road and explained the scriptures to us?
- 5:27And within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem.
- 5:31There they found the 11 disciples and others who were
- 5:33gathered with them. Who said, the Lord has really
- 5:37risen? He appeared to Peter.
- 5:40Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had
- 5:43appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how
- 5:46they had recognised him as he was breaking the bread.
- 5:49And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was
- 5:53suddenly standing there among them.
- 5:56Peace be with you, he said. But the whole group was startled
- 5:59and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost.
- 6:02Why are you frightened? He asked.
- 6:05Why are your hearts filled with doubt?
- 6:07Look at my hands, look at my feet.
- 6:10You can see that it's really me. Touch me and make sure that I'm
- 6:15not a ghost, because ghosts don't have bodies, as you see
- 6:19that I do. As he spoke, he showed them his
- 6:22hands and his feet. Still they stood there in
- 6:25disbelief, filled with joy and wonder.
- 6:29Then he asked them, Do you have anything here to eat?
- 6:33They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he ate it as they
- 6:37watched. Then he said, When I was with
- 6:40you before, I told you that everything written about me in
- 6:44the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must
- 6:48be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to
- 6:52understand the Scriptures, and he said, yes, it was written
- 6:55long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the
- 7:00dead on the third day. It was also written that this
- 7:03message would be proclaimed in the authority of His name to all
- 7:08the nations, beginning in Jerusalem.
- 7:11There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.
- 7:15You are witnesses of all these things.
- 7:18And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father
- 7:21promised, but stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes
- 7:26and fills you with power from heaven.
- 7:29Then Jesus LED them to Bethany, and lifting his hands to heaven,
- 7:33He blessed them. While he was blessing them, He
- 7:36left them and was taken up to heaven.
- 7:39So they worshipped him and then returned to Jerusalem filled
- 7:43with great joy, and they spent all of their time in the temple
- 7:47praising God. Oh Jesus, you are alive.
- 8:02You are not just some quiet thought that lives in our own
- 8:07hearts, but you are the real living God, this man who raised
- 8:12up from the dead and you ascended and you now live
- 8:17eternally together with your Father, and you have given us
- 8:21your spirit to be here with us. Oh Jesus, you are the Saviour of
- 8:27the world. You are the Messiah and we
- 8:30worship you. Oh, all that you have achieved,
- 8:36and not just to get your name in the Guinness Book of World
- 8:38Records, but to save us and to restore us back to you.
- 8:44We love you, Jesus, we praise you and we thank you for all
- 8:48that you've done. And we pray all of this in your
- 8:51mighty name, Amen.
